I had the privilege of sitting down in person with Mike learning how his love of fly fishing developed through his pro football career into one of his TV shows, Familiar Waters. He learned to fly fish from a kind stranger as a 9-year-old. Lead the Bears to a 10-2 season at Cal. He played for Tampa Bay. I moved into the CFL and later arena football where he won a championship. He guided many of the rivers in Norcal in the off-season. After football, he started multiple TV shows including Familiar Waters and Gridiron Outdoors on the Outdoor Channel. Needless to say, his resume is unique and pretty fascinating.

I love first looks at weddings, but I will never ever get pushy with my brides about them. I'll explain the advantages and then let them decide if they want to stay traditional and wait to see each other when they walk down the isle. It's cool and ultimately I feel like photographers get pushy about it because it's easier for themselves and less about what the couple wants.

I've finally got my hands on the Nikon Z6 and I've shot several projects with it now. Moving more and more into video, I haven't really had any gear that was GREAT at shooting video since I'm a Nikon shooter. Nikon's new mirrorless has come a long way and has made their products really competitive in the video space.

Genki Hagata has always lived by the mantra to make something every day. With a career in design and front end web development, he turned to document his life in video before vlogging was really a thing. Without a plan, he started vlogging daily and soon learned that there wasn't really a community of like-minded people in Oakland where he lives. From that need, he dreamed up the idea of host a pop up, micro-conference to empower building local communities of creative individuals. Creators Offline was born. He shot for the stars and sought to host the first event at Casey Neistat's 368 in New York City. They enthusiastically agreed, lending credibility to the idea and were forced to turn people away due to overwhelming interest. In 2019, Genki is working to organize more events across the country. It's a pretty common opinion among wedding photographers that guests who use their smartphone to take their own personal snaps at a wedding are a nuisance. I saw a post on Facebook from a bride asking her guests to check their phones at the door so they would be tempted to use their phones during the wedding. Calling it childish behavior.

I’ve been busy wrapping up the year. Finishing up weddings, closing out some long standing projects and making plans for 2019. Knowing I’ll regret it a year from now, I’m setting some big plans into motion.
Today I talked about the vlog and getting it started back up. It’s going to be more true to who I am and should be a come-up story that tons of photographers will be able to relate to.
If you want to share sneak peaks from your shoots. Like fast, check out Nikon’s Snapbridge app. As I have it configured, it automatically downloads 2mp copies of every picture. I can pop it into Google Photos, do a simple edit and share it before I even start the car and drive home. I can’t emphasize this enough, the clients love it!
The December 2019 update for Lightroom is here and with it comes the ability to customize the order of the tools in the Develop Panel. Yes! They’ve also promised speed boosts in a couple situations. You’ll have to listen in to find if it’s actually faster for me.

Gwen Edwardson is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet. She has a servants heart and she has a modern eye for details. When we first worked together, I was just blown away by how well she took care of me. I felt like she really cared about my needs making sure I was fed and had plenty to drink. Welcome to my brand new photography podcast. I've been kicking around the idea of starting a podcast for a couple years now and I've finally pulled the trigger.
Today I gave a little introduction for myself and then I go into pretty great detail about how to schedule a wedding. Some key points: 1. Start shooting the men first thing in the morning. 2. Have the bride do her hair and makeup in the middle of the lineup with the bridesmaids so we aren't waiting on her if things take a long time. 3. Do a First Look to get more shots and keep your guests from waiting too long for the reception to start.
