Hello and welcome to Take Aurally, the podcast from NUH DREEAM; winner of Health Education England Education Team of the Year 2017.
Take Aurally started as a podcast for Emergency Medicine but has grown to cover large parts of the clinical curriculum for students at the University of Nottingham; everything from ENT to Therapeutics. Whether you're a student or a practitioner looking to refresh their memory Take Aurally is for you!

In this special episode we are joined by David Green, a specialist employment and personal illness barrister from 12 King’s Bench Walk Chambers to discuss personal illness and occupational disease.
Questions asked include:
What is a barrister? Do they all wear wigs and shout “Objection!” all the time?
How does a claim go from injury to court?
What happens during a court hearing?
How is the value of a claim calculated?
David introduces us to the medicolegal world, looking at personal illness, court proceedings and the role of medical experts. Along the way we discuss how to become a barrister, how Inns of Court are like Houses of Hogwarts and how the gavel has never been used in courts in England or Wales.
In this special for Advanced Clinical Practice Week 2020, we handed over the podcast to our friends in the NUH Acute Medicine ACP Team: Hannah Polak and Greg Cartright. They take us through their careers, their day-to-day work and how the ACP team fits in with the wider MDT.

A feature of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the rush to find the magic bullet to defeat it. Under the heading of ‘compassionate use,’ a number of agents have been tested and papers published. Our favourite Pharmacist Kunal Gohil joined the podcast via Zoom to take us through the evidence behind two agents which have received particular fanfare: Hydroxychloroquinine and Remdesivir, discussing compassionate care and the process of developing a vaccine.

Status epilepticus is the most common paediatric neurological emergency in the UK and the second most common reason for unplanned PICU admission in the UK.
Dr Colin Gilhooley defines status epilepticus before discussing the EcLiPSE trial:
Levetiracetam versus phenytoin for second-line treatment of paediatric convulsive status epilepticus (EcLiPSE): a multicentre, open-label, randomised trial
This was a UK wide trial across 30 Emergency Departments (including our own in Nottingham) comparing Phenytoin as the standard 2nd line treatment to Levetiracetam as an alternative with a smaller side effect profile. The result was (spoilers): NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE.
Colin take us through the potential consequences of this, how this might change practice as well as what it was like to be involved in the trial and what deferred consent might mean in the future.

Audit is discussed with emphasis on the cyclical approach. Finally Quality Improvement Projects are covered, how they are linked to audit, the PDSA format (Plan, Do, Study, Act) and how it can be embedded across healthcare.
