god, it's brutal out here!

halfway through 2021 and we're campaigning for a celebrity to do something INTERESTING soon. fortunately lorde has released new music to keep us going (3:50) and baffleck and jlo are out here PDAing like it's 2002 (10:58), for which we are grateful. plus, dc forced us into a very NSFW 'batman, does he or doesn't he?' debate (19:04).

next, we take a mammoth deep dive into one of our favourite tv shows of the year so far, hbo's 'mare of easttown' (25:16), before revisiting the abbott family in a quiet place 2 (56:44).

finally, we recommend up a few personal favourites in tv, film, music and books released this year that we haven't covered in the podcast already (01:20:15). and yes, one of us did recommend olivia rodrigo.

it's time for a celebrity monster deathmatch!!!

round one is some news highlights! we react to the winners and losers of the 93rd academy awards (4:00) and then make some predictions for what timothée chalamet might wear as host of the 2021 met gala prays for cowboy boots and a wide-brimmed hat (15:02). finally, we attempt to put into words our feelings about sebastian stan and lily james as tommy and pam for hulu's limited series (18:26).

for round two, we take some time to appreciate darius marder's sound of metal (24:33); a newly crowned academy-award winner which is now available to watch on amazon prime in the uk. next in the ring is a deep-dive into the world of disney's the falcon and the winter soldier (51:43), which we promise is more than just an ode to bucky barnes!

then on to the round three: we watched godzilla vs. kong (01:16:05)! yes, it's the monsterverse analysis from two clueless spectators that you've all been waiting for.

finally, the big fight: celebrity monster deathmatch (01:30:35)! the thing vs a xenomorph. the cenobites vs the deadites. king kong vs a giant shark. we pull no punches in our discussion of who would win if some of the greatest monsters in recent cinematic history entered the ring together.

La!

folks, it's time we talk about ben affleck and mr duncan donuts (3:15). once apryl has that out of her system, we discuss how dapper and sinister rob pattinson would look in a top hat playing serial killer h.h. holmes (13:34) and mourn what michael bay has made jake gyllenhaal do to his hair sob (18:40).

we’re back with another episode- number forty four, in fact- and much to think about:

on the news front, we cover the trailer for denis villenueve’s ‘dune’ (3:55), the sad passing of chadwick boseman (12:20) and a quick look at netfix’s teaser for ‘rebecca’ (including armie hammer’s questionable accent) (18:00)

after that, we spend some time pontificating about charlie kaufman’s latest head scratcher, ‘i’m thinking of ending things’ (25:30), explain why we’re NOT covering ‘tenet’ (42:50) before sharing our thoughts on the first four episodes of HBOs ‘lovecraft country’ (45:40).

then for our main topic (1:04:55), we take inspiration from two pieces of shia labeouf’s work and talk about those actors whose films you’ll always watch (even if they’re bad). we consider the lows- the recently released ‘the tax collector’ (1:08)- and the career highs- last year’s critically acclaimed ‘honey boy’ (1:12:58)- before discussing a few other actors whose work we’ll always show up for, regardless of quality (1:30:00).

to end- as always- obsessions of the week! (1:41:21)

‘what if I'm not the hero? what if I'm the bad guy?’

we’re back!!!!! after a few months off to recuperate (pandemics, eh?) it’s back to business with a big ol’ two-parter covering the very best in pop culture from the past few weeks and months.

in part one, we begin with the most pressing matters of international concern: the trailer drop for netflix’s ‘the devil all the time’ (4:47), the burgeoning romance between megan fox and machine gun kelly (12:30), and THAT amazing video from cardi b and megan thee stallion (19:45) (macaroni in a pot, etc).

next, it’s groundhog day! we take a look at the recent andy samberg comedy ‘palm springs’ (28:25) and the irony of watching someone relive the same day over and over while in lockdown. then on to tv, including michaela coel’s stunning BBC drama ‘i may destroy you’ (44:15) and a quick check in on everyone’s favourite friendly nbc psychologist, ‘hannibal’. plus, we give a quick recap of what else we’ve been enjoying in recent months.

we’ve split this ep just before the main event so make sure you download and tune in to part two, which revisits the famous little town of forks, washington and and the world of stephenie meyer’s ‘twilight’ on screen.

we start with news (2:20) covering brad pitt and alia shawkat (who aren’t dating), trent reznor’s inadvertent CMAs win (he didn’t really wear a cowboy hat), harry styles’ SNL double-duty (must get rid of toxic in community) PLUS our usual ~timmy time~.

on the review front we cover the first six episodes of HBO’s ‘watchmen’ remix (29:00, beware of SPOILERS) before moving onto rian johnson’s whodunnit mystery ‘knives out’ (49:50) and then noah baumbach’s divorce drama, ‘marriage story’ (1:02:10)

then- taking inspiration from this stark look at the logistical end of a relationship- we look at BREAK UP MOVIES the good/the bad/the most emotionally distressing! (1:21:00)

episode 35 is us in full-on catch up mode as we return from our brief september hiatus to cover some news & reviews of what we’ve been consuming for the last SIX(!!) WEEKS. it’s a long one, so buckle up!

in ~current affairs~ (2:34) we’ve address THAT harry styles rolling stone profile, that GQ brad pitt profile; there’s some swedish skarsgård drama and we touch on this year’s emmy awards where the brits swept the board. we also let you know that TIMMY SEASON is truly upon us.

on the TV front, we talk about netflix’s crime procedural ‘unbelievable’ (32:11), before moving onto movies where we discuss the jlo-fronted ‘hustlers’ (42:38) and the brad pitt space spectacle that is ‘ad astra’ (53:41). as ever:

after a small dive into taylor swift’s ‘lover’ (1:07:33), our main topic addresses one of steph’s areas of expertise: STEPHEN KING!

we begin with our review of ‘IT: chapter two’, (1:13:15) which leads into a more general discussion about the work of one of the world’s most prolific writers (stephen king, duh) (1:36:32). we talk about books, why some adaptations are successful when others fail and we share some of our favourite king page to screen transitions as well as yours too! to conclude: our (accrued) OBSESSIONS OF THE WEEK! "hey! you're rick f**king dalton. don't you forget it"

‘once upon a time...in hollywood’ is quentin tarantino’s ninth film and one we’ve been looking forward to all summer (brad! leo! margot!). so- with that in mind- episode 34 & a half is an elongated SPOILER FILLED discussion about the movie in all its 1960s sunshine-fueled glory.

we cover our expectations in the build up to the film’s release; our overall impressions now we’ve seen it; the themes it addresses; what we thought of the cast; the film’s overall structure AND (of course)that ending. we also talk about some of the criticisms, though we definitely have more thoughts that didn’t quite make it into this episode. it’s not easy discussing quentin tarantino’s work but we gave it a try- and we'd love to know what you thought, so get in touch once you've listened to share your own review.

"there's more to life than stupid boys, you know"

episode 34 is a bumper TV special (soon to be followed by a tarantino minisode) but before we dissect the shows we’ve enjoyed this summer, we cover some news (1:49):

channing tatum has moved to suffolk(?!), liam hemsworth and miley cyrus have split (again?), harry styles has emerged to film two videos & appear in a gucci fragrance campaign AND drumroll THE TIMMY DROUGHT IS OVER: the ‘little women’ trailer is here!

our TV catch up is spoiler heavy as we dive deep and talk about some of the summer’s most anticipated shows: ‘stranger things 3’ (22:54), season 2 of HBO’s ‘big little lies (48:39) and the return of ‘kiling eve’ (1:01:14). we also share some of the other things we’ve managed to fit in (1:09:22) including ‘schitt’s creek’, ‘euphoria’, ‘succession, ‘the boys’, ‘GLOW’, ‘derry girls’, and ‘dark’.

it’s been a while since we recorded which is why this is really episode 33 masquerading as episode 32 (ignore our puns!). more importantly: we’re joined by our favourite australian, von, who co-hosts with us IN REAL LIFE (and not via skype!)

in news, we cover the ‘charlie’s angels’ trailer (4:20) the forbes 100 richest list (10:16) AND we return to our podcast roots by monologuing about one of our favourites, jake gyllenhaal & his recent ‘spider-man: far from home’ press tour romance with co-star tom holland (19:30). take that, ryan reynolds!

there's some spoiler-filled film discussion as we tackle ari aster’s sophomore effort ‘midsommar’ (28:18), and the end of marvel’s third phase: ‘spider-man: far from home’ (49:30) then after a few music and tv shout outs (1:14:00), we move onto our main topic (1:21:55) which is clears throat dramatically, SNOGGING or rather: best cinematic kisses!

‘the notebook’? ‘10 things I hate about you’? ‘cruel intentions’? we cover all these and more, so tune in to find out exactly what makes snogging on screen so compelling (and to hear us list some of your listener favourites too!) we also share our ~obsessions of the week~ (no surprises there though…) (1:52:02)

like the rest of the internet, we saw and loved olivia wilde's directorial debut 'booksmart' and left the cinema with lots to say. our friend peggy hughes felt the same, so she joined us for a spoiler-ish discussion about the film (3:30) which turned into a much broader chat about the legacy of high school films as a genre(39:25). she even stuck around for our ~obsessions of the week~ (1:10:20). you can find peggy over on twitter: www.twitter.com/hughespeg

now we’ve inched into our thirties, we’re back with another episode in which we cover some recent news from the internet rumour mill (does jake gyllenhaal have a cat? are lupita and janelle dating? does that mean tessa and brie dating?? what’re the dune cast up to? will rpattz play batman?) before moving onto some reviews, including a spoiler-filled look at joe berlinger’s ted bundy biopic ‘extremely wicked, shockingly evil and vile’ starring our favourite ex-disney darling, zac efron (19:00)

we also give our thoughts on the first season of ‘pose’ (35:42), ryan murphy’s look at 1980s ball culture in new york city, before covering a few recent music releases we’re enjoying (50:48) and ~finally~, our obsessions of the week (55:27)

it's a MET GALA emergency pod!

given HOW much of our attention it occupied in a very short space of time, we took initiative and decided to discuss the 71st met gala which took place earlier this week on the first monday in may. we cover the fashion highs, the lows, the contentious theme (what exactly IS camp?) and- of course- those co-chairs, including two of our faves, lady gaga and some guy called harry styles ('i don't know her').

like mark ruffalo and jennifer garner in the seminal rom-com classic, we're 13 going on THIRTY.

hi, we're back and catching up with the latest news & reviews from the last few weeks. we talk coachella 2019 and shia labeouf's questionable stomach tattoo (real? unreal? who knows!) followed by a spoiler-y discussion of jordan peele's 'Us' (19:49) and a whizz through other things we've enjoyed of late including the end of 'broad city' (38:17) 'fleabag' (40:00).

in the second half of the episode (50:39) we're joined by academic, lecturer and researcher tori cann to discuss the devaluation of the feminine and the difficulties and issues surrounding pop culture consumption as a woman. we also consider pop culture and the patriarchy, why women's interests are so often dismissed and why gender divides between what girls like and what boys like still exist even in contemporary times. you can find tori over on twitter: www.twitter.com/_canndo

after all that we of course conclude with our obsessions of the week (1:52:38).

we also discuss that harry styles gucci campaign, celebrity pigs, heist movie 'american animals', sarah waters adaptation 'little stranger', 'killing eve' & 'fleabag' (phoebe waller-bridge appreciation corner)AND steph finally caves and listens to ryan adams (find that playlist here: https://spoti.fi/2J47RsG)
