At BrightRock, we #LoveChange! And so does our bounce playing friend, Ella!
From the Ella who knew nothing about rugby to the Ella who knows something about rugby, there’s been a lot of transformation going on. What’s Ella’s biggest take away from all of these moments of change? As she eloquently puts it, “Rugby is more than just a game, rugby is life.”
In the final episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field, Ella returns to Loftus Versfeld to chat with Vodacom Bulls Wing, Canan Moodie.
Canan recently landed that job on the rugby field and is considered a rookie in the team. However, he’s learning to love change as he steps up and steps out in his new role. “Just learning from the [players] how to get ready for games, how to make sure my body is in peak condition…adapting my skill level - it’s all about change,” he adds.
Ella and Canan unpack all the change moments that can happen in one’s new role on the field. From first-time travelling with the team, juggling academics, keeping goals and just revelling in the good moments.
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you prepare for that transition by committing to love change!
Ella continues to learn to love the beautiful game of rugby at Loftus Versfeld, home to the Vodacom Bulls. And who better to teach her more about playing the bounce both on the field and off the field, than the experts themselves?
In the latest episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field, Ella learns more about techniques used in rugby with Vodacom Bulls flyhalf, Chris Smith.
Chris tells Ella that playing the bounce isn’t so much about being big and beefy but more about using your brain. He adds, “It’s more about the brains…maybe a little about the looks but mainly brains. We like to serve the team, make sure they score tries and that the team wins.”
For Chris, being able to adapt on the field means being able to have a vision and seeing where the players can take advantage of opportunities to score.
Chris and Ella discuss further about physical capabilities and technicalities on the field and the preparation that goes with it. “Sometimes you go into the week feeling underprepared, but sometimes you put in 10,000 hours of work, and your muscle memory kicks in. So, if you stick to the process…then you end up just playing the game and everything takes care of itself,” tells Chris.
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you prepare for that transition by committing to love change!
Ella is her name, and knowing very little about rugby is her game.
But…that’s all about to change! Reporting from Loftus Versfeld, home to the Vodacom Bulls, Ella is learning how to play the bounce and what that bounce can teach us about life.
In the latest episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field, Ella learns to plan for change with Vodacom Bulls defence coach, Joey Mongalo.
You may be thinking, how does one plan for change? As Joey tells Ella, “Change is not easy, to start off with…but in the moment, we have to change and adapt.”
Being able to adapt means being able to think ahead and familiarising yourself with different scenarios. That’s a huge part of Joey’s career as a defence coach. He takes the fundamentals of the game strategy and changes it according to the opponents so he can create a holistic overview of varying outcomes.
Joey and Ella unpack big topics about navigating change while on the field and the transitions that go with it.
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you make that transition easier by committing to love change!
Ella returns to Loftus Versfeld, home to the Vodacom Bulls, where she’s on a mission to learn more about the beautiful game of rugby. As our go-getter reporter, Ella is trying to understand how to play the bounce, the different ways a ball can bounce and what that bounce can teach us about life.
In the latest episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field (or in this case, the locker room) Ella learns to #LoveChange with Vodacom Bulls Backline player Cornal Hendricks.
Cornal and Ella tackle some big topics about adapting to change while on the field and in life. Cornal emphasises that being mentally fit is just as important as being physically fit. As he tells Ella, “You need to be mentally strong. That’s why we have a mental coach that prepares us for the matches during the weekend.”
And what is the best advice that Cornal has received from the Bulls’ mental coach? “Just to keep calm in the situation when it’s chaos out there and just to see a clear picture of the situation, plus to adapt to whatever is happening on the field,” he adds.
Cornall goes on to elaborate how that picture informs strategy, what resources he uses to adapt to change and shares his pearls of wisdom about being ‘change fit’ with Ella.
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you make that transition easier by committing to love change!
From sitting on the couch to chatting with the coach, Ella is back at Loftus Versfeld which is home to the Vodacom Bulls. She’s on a mission to learn more about the beautiful game of rugby and how the bounce of the ball echoes the changing nature of life itself.
In the latest episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field, Ella learns to #LoveChange with Head Coach Jake White.
For those of you that know rugby, you may have heard of Jake White. He’s been playing the bounce for over 40 years and led multiple victories. During his lengthy career, Jake has navigated many changes. As he tells Ella, “I never thought I’d coach with a telephone but sometimes we coach through WhatsApp.”
The highlight and greatest change moment of Jake’s career was the day he landed that job as head coach of the national team. Of course, it was an overwhelming experience but Jake does have a philosophy pertaining to change that he is a firm believer of. As he shares with Ella, “You got to be calm. You got to trust what you’ve put into place.”
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you make that transition easier by committing to love change!
Technical difficulties or is it difficult technicalities? In the latest episode of Play On: Life Lessons from the Field, Ella learns to quickly adapt to change when things aren’t quite going to plan…
Lucky for our fabulous Ella, the Vodacom Bulls Technical Team Manager, John-William Meyer, steps in to give her some tips on how to #LoveChange.
Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way - then what? As John-William tells Ella, “Change will always happen. That’s the one life lesson that I’ve learned. And with change always happening, just stay calm and control the controllables. [...] The rest, take it on the chin.”
Ella is highly impressed by John-William’s Science of Change tip (and motto!) that is applicable to both life and playing the bounce. John-William goes on to elaborate the types of changes that can occur in an 80-minute match and how his job is to help facilitate the stress of it all using statistics.
So, whether it’s starting a home, making a family, tying the knot, landing that job or heading into retirement - let us, Ella and the Vodacom Bulls team, help you make that transition easier by committing to love change!

It takes two to fall hopelessly, head over heels in love, just as it takes two to fall into a bitter, raging argument about…well, what? It could be something serious, such as whether or not to have children, take up a job offer overseas, sell up and move home, or listen to mom-in-law’s advice on how to have a happy marriage. It could be something so trivial and fleeting, that eventually, in the midst of the battle, you’ve long forgotten why you started fighting in the first place. Conflict is a natural part of any relationship, all the more so in a time of change, which is why learning to manage conflict is so vital to getting along. As clinical psychologist Dr Vuyo Themba explains in this episode of Chatting Change, love, on its own, isn’t enough. You need to learn to talk, openly and from the heart, in the knowledge that you may not be the one to emerge victorious. Having those difficult conversations is more important, as is the willingness to negotiate and compromise, in the best interests of each other. Because it takes two, after all, to work things out. But how do you plan financially for the gap, and how do you start all over again when you get back to work? Join Lopang Mokae, who taught English in Asia during her change-break abroad, to learn the answers.
