Believe it or not, Days of Future Podcast is ten years old! That's right, a full decade of talking the weather, Richard Kind, and The Single Guy, with the occasional bit of X-Men discussion, as well. To celebrate this important milestone, we're reviewing the original "X-Men #10," from January of 1965, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In this issue, the original five X-Men journey for the first time to the Savage Land, as the X-Men and Marvel readers alike are introduced to Ka-Zar, the lord of the jungle, and his sabretooth tiger, Zabu. You've been waiting ten long years to hear us talk about Ka-Zar (uhhh...right?), and now, finally, here is your chance!
But first, we reminisce on ten years of DOFP, debate whether the X-Men franchise is a better place today than it was a decade ago, and share our thoughts on which X-Men characters have changed the most since we started the show. On the eve of our upcoming 10th Anniversary episode, we're giving you a little bonus - a recent episode of Trev's other podcast, Failure to Franchise, dedicated to failed movie franchise-starters, in which Joe joined Trev and his co-host Chris to discuss 2020's The New Mutants*. That's right, it's a comic book style crossover, with two podcasts joining forces to try to figure out just what the hell happened with this movie.*
It's a new year, and a new theme! F2F is transforming - or should we say "mutating" - the month of January into "The Mutant Gene-uary!" That's right, a month dedicated to mutants, and we're kicking it off with 2020's The New Mutants, the last film released from the original regime of the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise. Based on a popular X-Men spin-off comic, The New Mutants was meant not only to expand the horizons of what a superhero movie could be, by taking a more horror-based approach, but also to add a new offshoot franchise to the overall X-Men cinematic universe, with a brand new team of young mutant heroes. But after a troubled production and multiple release-date delays, The New Mutants ultimately limply arrived after Disney's purchase of Fox meant the existing X-Men film franchise would be no more. Putting the behind-the-scenes politics aside, did The New Mutants truly deserve its fate? To discuss this, in the spirit of shared universes and comic book crossovers, we're joined in this episode by Joe, Trev's co-host on the Days of Future Podcast: Examining the X-Men podcast, for what promises to be an X-cellent conversation. We're back, just in time for one of our most stressful events of the year - trying to figure out what to do for another DOFP Halloween special! This time around, we have decided to review X-Statix Presents Dead Girl, a five-issue 2006 miniseries from Peter Milligan, Nick Dragotta, and Michael & Laura Allred. Intended as a coda to Milligan and Allred's then recently-completed, critically acclaimed, cult run on X-Force/X-Statix, Dead Girl sees the titular mutant team up with Doctor Strange and a squad of (at the time) dead superheroes, to travel through the various levels of hell in an attempt to thwart the plans of a group of dead supervillains who are trying to use arcane magic to be resurrected. Stylized as a goofy adventure story and a meta-commentary on the impermanence of death in modern superhero comics, Dead Girl is an interesting read today - especially when remembering this was written before the creation of the MCU and the elevation of Doctor Strange to A-List status. But is it any good? We're here to figure that out.

It's September, and that means it's officially "Back to School" season! And we're in the academic spirit, reading and reviewing X-Campus, a four-issue miniseries, from 2010. "As told by some of Europe's greatest comics storytellers," including writer Francesco Artibani, X-Campus re-imagines the X-Men mythos and the origins of the team, re-casting the characters we know and love as the faculty and students of the Worthington Foundation, a special High School for gifted youth. Does this reimagining work? Which characters are best suited to this sort of approach, and which feel out of place cast as modern teenagers? And should Marvel try more "Elseworlds"-style re-tellings of the X-Men mythos? We discuss all this, and more!
But first, we look at the recent, controversial public dispute between fired X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo and Disney, offering our take on their war of words and accusations, and where the truth may lie (and, of course, for the second episode in a row, even more stuff about this came out not long after we recorded, so this probably won't be the last of it you'll hear from us, either).

Deadpool & Wolverine is finally here, breaking box-office records and generating lots of discourse. So of course we are legally and morally bound to add our voices to the mix. Our mixed feelings on Ryan Reynolds and the Deadpool franchise is well recorded, but so is our love of Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine, so what did we think of this eagerly anticipated team-up? Is it the saving grace of the MCU it was suggested to be? Is it anything more than a cameo-filled nostalgia fest? Which surprise characters did we enjoy seeing? It's been commonly positioned as a "make or break" moment for the MCU, but is also - perhaps more importantly to our purposes - is essentially the true beginning of the MCU's "Mutant Saga." The comics world and X-Men fans in particular were recently rocked by the news that, upon the conclusion of his "Inferno" event, Jonathan Hickman will be entirely leaving the X-Books, much earlier than many were expecting. As the grand architect of this new era of the X-Men, Hickman has been a controversial figure in X-fandom, but there's no denying the impact he has had on the status quo of these characters and their world. So what does it mean when the man who has overseen it all, departs? We're here to discuss the potential fallout of this announcement, including whether we're worried about the direction of the books in his absence, and whether we think the admitted change of plans that led to his exit means his overall artistic vision was compromised by Marvel and his other collaborators.

Perhaps best known to many American comic readers for his controversial "Spider-Woman" cover, Manara is primarily known for his work in erotic comics. And this is no different, presenting a hyper-sexually-charged look at an adventure of Kitty Pryde, Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Rachel Summers, and Emma versus the evil Baroness. That this comic even exists - not a fan-work but an actual, official X-book put out by Marvel only a little over a decade ago - is sorta mind-boggling today, so of course we need to check it out. In true timely DOFP fashion, we're finally sharing our overall thoughts on THE FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER, the latest MCU Disney+ series. In 2011, Marvel Entertainment teamed with Japanese animation studio Madhouse on a set of four 12-episode anime series, each featuring Marvel superheroes sent on adventures in Japan. Each overseen by problematic comic superstar Warren Ellis, the shows were a unique blend of traditional Marvel tales with anime sensibilities. As these shows have recently been added to US Netflix streaming, we figured it's a perfect time to take a look at one of those series, WOLVERINE, which sees Logan trying to save his love, Mariko, from Shingen, her crime-lord father, and Hideki, an evil gangster she is being forced to marry. As the world hunkers down into a pandemic-created quarantine, we've decided to spend this valuable time diving into one of the strangest pieces of X-Men history, the April 1983 one-shot "Obnoxio the Clown vs. The X-Men." This issue saw the mascot of the then recently-cancelled Marvel humor magazine "Crazy" invited to the X-Mansion to perform for Kitty Pryde's birthday. Unfortunately, he just so happens to arrive at the same time a bizarre villain named Eye-Scream is planning an attack on the X-Men....and (allegedly) wacky hijinks ensue. We discuss both the one-shot and the history of the Obnoxio character in general, in order to decipher why this issue even happened, and why Obnoxio is mostly forgotten about today.

Why the heck was one of the new Dawn of X titles called "Fallen Angels," you ask? Well, it turns out the name (and name only) is, apparently a reference to a New Mutants spin-off mini-series by Jo Duffy and Kerry Gammill from 1987. In this totally bonkers eight-issue miniseries, Sunspot (Bobby da Costa) runs away from his New Mutant teammates, with alien buddy Warlock in tow, and soon the two find themselves mixed up with a bizarre team of young, super-powered street criminals, led by a former X-Villain. Along for the ride are Multiple Man and Siryn, who are sent by Magneto and Moira MacTaggert to locate the wayward New Mutants, but soon also find themselves part of this new ragtag group. It's an absolutely wild series that highlights all that was great (and confusing) about comic books in the late '80s, and we're here to talk all about it.

In 2001, writer Peter Milligan and artist Michael Allred took over X-FORCE, ditching the characters fans already knew and loved for a completely new cast and a bold new concept - a satirical book about a mutant superhero team that were also reality TV stars. Eventually re-launching with the new title X-STATIX, this insanely creative title would be ultimately short-lived, but go on to enjoy a strong cult following to this day. Now, 15 years since the original X-STATIX title ended, Mister Sensitive, Doop, Dead Girl, Vivisector, & U-Go Girl are back (along with some new members), in Milligan and Allred's brand-new GIANT SIZE X-STATIX #1. In 1984, writer Chris Claremont and artist Barry Windsor-Smith offered up a different type of superhero story in X-Men #186. "Lifedeath: A Love Story" finds a recently de-powered Storm being tended to by Forge - the man who, unbeknownst to her, is himself partly responsible for her losing her mutant abilities. How does a woman once worshipped as a super-powered goddess face a future with no powers? Is she more than the sum of her powers? This classic, introspective story sought to answer these questions, in the process further developing Storm into one of the X-Men's best, most complex characters. A year later, Claremont and Windsor-Smith would deliver a sequel story, "Lifedeath II," in X-Men #198, this time depicting a wounded, exhausted Storm tasked with protecting a young pregnant woman in the African plains. In this episode, we take a look at both of these classic stories, examining what they tell us about Storm, and why stories like these manage to resonate and stand out amongst the more common action-packed adventures often found in comic pages.

The year is 1980. Mount St. Helens is about to erupt, Ronald Reagan is on his way to being elected President, and over in Hollywood, megastar Bo Derek is preparing to star as Dazzler in what will be the first live-action blockbuster movie from Marvel. That's right, decades before we were all wowed by how impressive AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR was, we almost had an even more ambitious cinematic superhero spectacle - a DAZZLER movie that would have seen everyone's favorite disco-queen mutant, along with Spider-Man and the Avengers, zapped to the far future. Set to star an extremely eclectic cast including Derek, Robin Williams, Cher, KISS, The Village People, Rodney Dangerfield, and more, the DAZZLER movie obviously never actually happened. But in this episode, we take a look at the bizarre treatment written for the film (by comics legend Jim Shooter)...as well as the problematic, but perhaps more-relevant-than-ever 1984 graphic novel, "Dazzler: The Movie" (also penned by Shooter), which details Dazzler's encounters with the sleazy men of the entertainment industry.

And so, we begin by discussing the x-tremely cool contents of a listener-submitted care package, and then go on to answer a number of questions submitted on our social media feeds. From August of 1976, and written and illustrated by the classic duo of Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, "X-Men #100" sees a battle of X-Men vs. X-Men (at a time when that was still a novelty), as Wolverine, Storm, Banshee, Nightcrawler, and Colossus find themselves having to defend themselves against an attack from the original five X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, & Angel), as well as Havok and Polaris, aboard a space station. However, all may not be truly as it appears, in an action-packed issue that culminates with one of the most important moments in X-Men history. How does the issue stack up today? In this episode, we pay our respects to the legendary Stan "The Man" Lee, co-creator of the X-Men (with artist Jack Kirby). Lee's recent passing was felt all around the world, and of course we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss his role in the X-Universe. He might have only written 19 issues of the original title, but the entire X-Men legacy owes much to Lee...not just many of the classic characters, but also the very ideals of tolerance and acceptance that he crafted into the franchise early on. We share our own thoughts on what Lee meant to us, as well as take an alphabetical look at just some of the many characters Lee helped created during his storied run.

In 2007, a three-part saga meant to reset and redefine the X-Universe in the wake of "House of M" and Scarlet Witch's "no more mutants" declaration was kicked off with "X-Men: Messiah Complex." But, hey, we already talked about that (see Episode #79). This time, we turn our attention to the second chapter of the trilogy, the 2009 Cable & X-Force crossover event, "Messiah War." This story sees Cable and a young Hope Summers (the first mutant born after "House of M," as introduced in "Messiah Complex") jumping through time, on the run from a now villainous(?) Lucas Bishop, who is intent on murdering Hope to prevent an apocalyptic future he believes she will bring about. Joined by both Deadpool and X-Force, the secret black ops X-team recently commissioned by Cyclops to permanently eliminate threats to mutants, Cable and Hope will have to battle not only Bishop, but also classic X-villains Stryfe and Apocalypse. Does this second chapter live up to the first, and is it still - years later - an essential read for X-fans?

It's almost time for DEADPOOL 2, and we're neck deep in Deadpool promotion and hype. In the spirit of the sequel's (once again) excellent marketing, we decided to do an on-mic taste test of various Deadpool related food tie-ins. So prepare to hear us try out the special Mutant Super Soda Red Dawn Slurpee from 7-11, the Chicken Cordon Bleu Mac & Cheese and Sweet & Smoky Angus Beef microwave dinners from Devour, and Mike's Harder Lemonade and Mike's Harder Lemonade Mango.
We also discuss the new Celine Dion song and music video, "Ashes," recorded just for DEADPOOL 2. We then share our predictions on what we might see in the film itself, as well as our always impressive and dead-on box office predictions. Also, better late than never, our thoughts on AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

We're back with another installment of our audio commentary series, this time taking a look at that OTHER Logan movie from director James Mangold. That's right, it's time to revisit 2013's THE WOLVERINE, the second (and arguably somewhat forgotten) solo Wolverine film. After X-MEN: FIRST CLASS had put the X-Men film franchise back on track, this entry was under a lot of pressure to not only keep the hot streak going, but also to erase memories of the previous solo film, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. To do so, the filmmakers turned to a classic fan favorite story/setting, as the movie chronicle's Wolverine's adventures in Japan. While it might not be as beloved as LOGAN, this film is still a necessary step to get to that epic finale...but how does it hold up as stand-alone movie in its own right? A new tradition is potentially born, with our first annual Mutant March Madness episode. Who is the greatest X-Men character of all time? It's a subjective question, one that is probably impossible to really answer. But that doesn't mean we won't try, with a special tournament pitting 64 of the most famous X-characters of all time against each other to determine just who is the best. Factors that determine victory include strength, uniqueness, visual design, and - if all else fails - who would probably win in a game of one-on-one basketball. Listen in as we debate each match-up based on a randomly selected first round...and only one of us can choose the winner of each contest. Possibly controversial, and certainly contentious (at times), this one was a lot of fun, so sit back and enjoy this super-sized episode as we use some of the loosest logic possible to decide just who reigns supreme in the X-Men universe.

After over a year of watching the X-Men and other mutant teams deal with the devastating fallout of 2005's "House of M," in which the mutant population was decimated, in 2007 a three-part saga was commenced to finally pay off and bring to a climax the events set into motion by that event. In this episode, we look at the first part of that saga, the 2007 crossover event "Messiah Complex," which sees the X-Men, the Purifiers, and Mister Sinister's Marauders all fighting to gain control of the first mutant birth since "House of M." Except, what they don't know is that a thought-dead former X-Man actually has the baby...and another trusted teammate is about to betray them all in an attempt to destroy the child. "Messiah Complex" was the beginning of a new era for the X-Men, simultaneously bringing hope (literally, even) back to the mutant universe, while also kicking off an even darker, more violent tone that the books had previously seen. We discuss it all, with an in-depth discussion of the event.
But first, our thoughts on the new DEADPOOL 2 trailer, and we speculate about the recent news that Brian Michael Bendis will be teaming with Tim Miller for a mysterious X-MEN movie currently known only as "143." 17 years ago, an unknown Aussie by the name of Hugh Jackman took on what seemed an impossible task: to breath life into the most popular X-Men character, in the franchise's very first live-action adaptation. His interpretation not only made him a star, but would go on to become one of the most beloved, iconic comic book movie performances of all time. Now, nine movies later, an era comes to a close, as Jackman plays Wolverine one last time in the brand new film LOGAN.

Remember X-MEN: APOCALYPSE? You might not, but the fast food chain White Castle certainly does. "Who is Agent X?" That was the question on the lips of at least dozens of Marvel fans back in the year 2002, when the company cancelled its low-selling title DEADPOOL (no, seriously), and replaced it with a new book called AGENT X. While the titular character seemed to share a lot of traits with everyone's favorite Merc with a mouth, the mystery of his true identity, and how it ties into Wade Wilson, was in fact a driving force of the book. Trev hasn't read the book since it first came out, but Joe just recently read it for the first time. In this episode, Trev valiantly attempts to remember the plot-twists and reveals of the story, and both guys discuss the book's place as an odd footnote in Deadpool history, and whether it was a worthy temporary replacement still worth revisiting today.

Few X-Men fans would deny that, as the '90s came to an end, the once fantastic comic franchise had lost its way. With the surprise mega-success of Bryan Singer's 2000 film, it was important that Marvel get the property back on track. To do so, they turned to Scottish comic-writer superstar Grant Morrison, hoping he could re-invent the X-Men. For 27 years, he was comics' ultimate man of mystery. The most popular X-Man of them all, Wolverine was known for his healing factor, adamantium claws, and - perhaps most intriguingly - the large question mark that hovered over his unknown early years. But that all changed in 2001, when Marvel finally decided to give us a peek at his secret beginnings, with Origin, a six-issue miniseries from Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove. Now, 15 years later, Trev and Joe take a look back at this classic/controversial story, both discussing the reasons it came to be and reviewing the entire miniseries itself.
