Please join us, as special guest Bob Alkire joins us to discuss the fatal events which took place near DuPont, Washington, in December 2017. Bob will discuss the history of the line, the right-of-way involved in the recent incident and its inaugural run that never reached its final destination.
We also talk about facts that have come to light in the past month, including the lack of PTC and how the incident occurred during it inaugural run. We will also discuss our thoughts of what will change or be modified in the future of passenger rail in the country.

This month's On The Road episode, we head west of our headquarters state of Missouri to Kansas. down the Kansas Turnpike and over lots abandon raibeds to the town of Wichita.
Wichita, Kansas used to be a center of rai for the plains, with all the cattle drives ending Wichita. Now freighttrains still rumble through but most don't stop. Passenger Servive ended years ago, a some folksare trying to restart service.
The town still has it's Union Station, is semi good repair, with developers tryng to bring new life into it.
Wichita is home to one of the world's biggest builder's of locomotives. Chance Rides makes a replic steam engines for lots of zoo and amusement parks.
For the model train lovers, the town's Floral gardens, Botanica, the Wichita Gardems, has a beautiful railroad garden where we will be set up for this episode.

On this episode of APRHF's Let's Talk Trains, we visit with Doug Alexander, whom was selected to ride last month's Amtrak's Inspection Train from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jacksonville, Florida. We started out by asking him describe his passion for trains and passenger railroading. Then we asked about heavy passenger rail in his area of the country. We then moved on to have him revisit his trip on board the inspection train.

Doug Alexander is a fourth-generation native of Atlanta, Georgia where he grew up and still lives with his family. Doug has been an active proponent of rail transportation literally since childhood. His first effort, at age six, was to design a tram system for his summer day camp. The bulk of Alexander’s career has been spent in marketing and market communications, though he spent six years as Rail Program Manager for the nowdefunct Georgia Rail Passenger Authority, and five years in various positions at the Georgia Department of Transportation. Alexander also served eight years as a city-wide elected member of the Atlanta City Council, from 1994 until 2002. He was vice-chairman of the Council’s Transportation Committee and served on Georgia Municipal Association’s Transportation & Community Development Committee, ultimately chairing that committee for two years.Alexander earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston University with additional studies in journalism at the Univ. of Georgia and architecture at Harvard University. His hobbies include sailing, model railroading and photography. He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Anne, and their sons, Wilson and Julian and their dog, a beaglebasset mix named Rainey

From his South Saint Louis County home on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and the railroad that runs along it. We check in with Ken Patterson. Ken is world famous for his modeling scenery skills and his photograpghy. His pictures have graced several magizine covers, and inside catalogs. Ken has a way of photograpghy that make observers wonder if it is a real live scene or just one that he created.
Ken has been around model trains most of his life. He discovered that there was money to be made in the hobby and he took off looking into developing a career. Hear what makes Ken tick, this time on APRHF's Let's Talk Trains.
During our Mississippi swing, we stopped off and discovered that the Vicksburg National Military Park had a railroad running through it, and has since before the war. So I asked the National Park staff if we could do a follow up inerview. What I learned was amazing, just as the spot in the park that overlooked the railroad. Join us for this week's program.
On this episode, we head south for our annual Mississippi visit. This time, we pull into McComb, Mississippi. The town of McComb is home to the McComb Railroad Museum. The town owes it's beginnings to the railroads, as do many of Mississippi towns. The McComb Railroad Museum is housed in the current Amtrak Station and has a vast collection of railroad artifacts and some rolling stock.
We visit with McComb's vice-mayor, about what the railroad and the railroad museum currently means to the area. We will also find out how he personally supports the museum. Then we visit with the museum's director, Winnie Howell. Ms. Howell will educate us on why she decided to save the depot and the town's railroad history. Several of the museum's volunteers will stop by to tell us what resoration projects they are working on.
Amtrak's Area Station Manager will closeout the episode to talk the role Amtrak plays in the town.

If you have ever traveled through the Springfield, Illinois area recently, you probably missed a great little railroad museum, just south of Springfield. The town of Chatham, Illinois has preserved their Chicago and Alton depot. The depot sits next to the Amtrak/UP line that runs from Chicago to St. Louis. The line is getting an upgrade to 110 mph for the higher speed program.
The museum is a great example of what can be done, when like minded people come together and preserve history.

We recently asked a St. Louis Fire Department Captain to come to the Route 66 Railfan Center in Pacific, Missouri and give us some insight in how they prepare and deal with problems along the rails. Fire Captain Ali Shahriary. Ali is also very interested in trains. Ali got started in model trains at a young age. He now models N-Scale. Ali is a Captain of a Engine Company in Northwest St. Louis City.
The Fire Chief of St. Louis has expressed his concerns about the railroads not fully cooperating with the department about tar sand shipments, but, they have been great training firefighters about hazardous loads.

This week, on the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's "The Let's Talk Trains Show," Kansas City Nathan travels two-hours east to the Missouri State Fairgrounds, in Sedalia, Missouri, for the Trails End event (www.thetrailsend.org). The event celebrates the men who drove cattle from Texas to the closest railhead towards Chicago. The fairgrounds are built right along the former M-K-T route, which is now the KATY Trail State Park. One of the major events going on at the fairgrounds is the Trails End Model Train Show & Collectible Show, which is being ran by members of the APRHF.

A few weeks ago, the APRHF's Let's Talk Trains podcast put out a call for people passionate about trains and what they mean for the world to join our team. This week, ShuttletrainTED introduces us to one of our new hosts. Her name is Hayley Enoch. She is from the big state of Texas. Hayley has shown that passion especially the steam era. She has a very well read blog called Friends of the Flange, that attracted over 32,000 page views over the last three years. That blog is how we found her. Her followers continued to ask us to learn more about her and have her join us. As a result of that lobbying, we are excited to have Hayley onboard. She will be doing some every interesting and topical shows in the upcoming months, including covering the first public excursion of 611, since it's rebuild in Spencer, North Carolina.
This week on the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's The Let's Talk Trains Show, Kansas City Nathan and co-host APRHF President Bob Cox, will be discussing the world of railroading communications via signaling. A double tracksubdivision in East Central Missouri. Coal trains, Intermodal, Grain Trains pass by. We will meet a few and find out what they like best about railfanning.

This week, in advance of our visit to the Show-Me Central NMRA Covention in June, we visit with Brad Slone who describes what makes the Convention so interesting, and how the model railroading hobby is growing in the midwest. During the second hour of the program, we visit with a railfan who's passion for railroads and it's place in United States history, decided to become a railroader. Scott Nauert is continuing the time honored tradition that railroaders of days gone by, have lived by for so many years.Scott has documeted several branch lines abandonments Mr. Nauert is currently an engineer with a short line serving a Mississipi River Port. Why are there not more manufacturers's coming to the shows Should model train shows be produced by for-profit companies instead of the local clubs or historical associations? Should there be more regional cooperation between organizations? Should we just have swap meets and then do a show with just model trains? Should we let attendees operate displays?

With all the press about Bravo Network's "Work Out" star, Greg Plitt---who was killed while trespassing on the right-of-way, shooting a commercial for an energy drink---and the recent influx of trespassing injuries and deaths in the media, such as when professional photographers take unsuspecting clients to get Senior Photos or modeling photo shoots. This brings to mind what WE all can do to educate the public on how dangerous the tracks are. We will discuss ways that we---as railfans/model railroaders/rail-buffs---can help spread the word on railroad safety and ways to help end these tragic events, for all those who are involved.
To lighten up the mood, during the Second Half of the show, APRHF President Bob Cox and Kansas City Nathan discuss modeling Amtrak passenger trains throughout the years. Bob & KC Nathan will talk about the different ways to model the American passenger rail service, from it's very beginnings to the present day. Since Bob is the station caretaker at the LaPlata, Mo. This week we travel to Corinth, Mississippi for a prerecorded episode. We learn about the city from the Mayor and Convention & Visitor Bureau Director. The Corinth Crossroads Museum Director stops by with to fill us in on what the museum has to offer visitors and railfans. The FVHRS owns and operates B.C. Electric Railway interurban car 1225 on a 4.5 mile stretch of former B.C. Electric trackage now operated by the Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY).
We will be talking with the board members and some volunteers about the restoration of 1225 and 1304, as well as current and future plans.

ShuttletrainTED visits the Discovery Park Of America located in Union City, TN. Discovery Park Of America had their soft opening in July of 2013. A replica of a train station from the 1800’s is on display on the south side of the park. Visitors can see traditional locomotive cars, and stand on the platform, pretending to be well-wishers from days gone by. During this pre-recorded show, we will learn about why they built Discovery Park in Union City and what there is to learn about as far as railroading is concerned.

On May 7th, the City of St. Paul, Minnesota and the Ramsey County Railroad Authority finally got an Amtrak to start stopping at their newly renovated Union Depot. The depot opened last year, and is a mulitmodal station. Union Depot held a morning press conference during which various officials made speeches including President and CEO of Amtrak, Joe Boardman and Asst. Director of the FRA, Karen Hedlund. We will listen to President Boardman's remarks, We will also speak to the author of a book on Union Depot, John Diers. The Chairman of the Ramsey County Railroad Authority and the Director are guests, We also visit with Thomas Whaley, a member of the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce and one of the owners of the St. Paul Saints.

American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's Lets Talk Trains will broadcast the St. Paul Union Depot Press Conference celebrating Amtrak's Empire Builder's arrival to their Union Depot. Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman will be among the speakers at a special ribbon cutting ceremony at the St. Paul Union Depot at 10:30 a.m. on May 7. Other speakers include Federal Railroad Administration Deputy Administrator Karen Hedlund and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman.
Between May and June, there are three large railway events occuring in the southeast and midwest. Elizabeth Alkire will be discussing Streamliners at Spencer in North Carolina, the 2014 National Railway Historical Society convention in Springdale, Arkansas and Train Expo 2014 in Owosso, Michigan. The 25th Louisiana Railroad Festival in DeQuincy, Louisiana host this week's American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's Let's Talk Trains program.
The City of DeQuincy which observed the centennial of its incorporation in 2003, owes its existence to the railroads. The original townsite was laid out in 1896 and 1897 when the main line of the Kansas City Pittsburgh and Gulf Railroad reached here.
Over the years the railroad -- the Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific Railroads -- have provided employment for several generations of DeQuincy residents and have been a mainstay of the local economy.
Before the coming of the Interstate system and better roads, DeQuincy was the hub for railroad travel, with several east-west and north-south passenger trains coming through each day. The passenger trains are gone now, but the city is still important in the railroad freight industry and continues to be a “railroad town.”

Pulling out of the station for its 19th consecutive ride on the rails, the Day Out With Thomas: The Thrill of the Ride Tour 2014 will visit more than 45 cities in the United States and Canada. Day Out With Thomas is the only place for families to take a ride with a 15-ton replica of everybody’s favorite #1 engine, Thomas the Tank Engine, and enjoy Thomas-themed activities at the Imagination Station, including stamps, temporary tattoos and hands-on arts and crafts. Each year the tour grows, traveling to new destinations, adding new activities and welcoming new visitors.
Day Out with Thomas is a collaboration between the Museum of the American Railroad of Frisco, Texas and the Grapevine Vintage Railroad in Historic Downtown Grapevine, Texas. Proceeds from the event go toward historic rail preservation. The event introduces a new generation of children to rail travel and the importance of rail preservation.

The National Railway Historical Society each summer sponsors RailCamp, a venue that gives hands-on contemporary railroading and railroad preservation experience to high school students, allowing them to interact directly with rail employees, learn what it takes to be a railroader, and explore career opportunities. RailCamp 2014 will be held in two locations, on the East Coast and West Coast. Among this year’s rail industry partners include Amtrak, short line Tacoma Rail, and the Strasburg Rail Road.
RailCamp East will be held July 6-11, 2014, and be based in Newark, Del., with some activities in Strasburg, Pa. RailCamp Northwest will take place July 27-Aug. 2, 2014, in Tacoma, Wash. Two exciting camps with lots of activities planned. Hear all about them and how to apply to attend.

The American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation's Let's Talk Trains travels to the 2014 Railroad Passenger Car Alliance convention in Branson, Missouri this week. We will learn what the Alliance does for Passenger Car Owners and what it means for the railfan.
Founded in 1982, the Railroad Passenger Car Alliance was created as a resource to owners and operators of privately owned railroad passenger equipment. The primary goal was to coordinate efforts for pooling their equipment for mainline steam excursions. The popularity of the organization quickly grew and today includes over 400 members.
As mainline steam excursions ceased, the organization changed the mission statement to include promoting the preservation and operation of historic railroad equipment, addressing the issues facing equipment owners and working with the nation's railroads and Amtrak to facilitate the operation and movement of member's passenger cars.
Today R.P.C.A. is a growing and forward thinking organization led by a Board of Directors who are railroad industry professionals, and are capable of thinking outside the box. Dedicated to preserving a unique and enjoyable mode of transportation.

Let's Talk Trains visited the town of Meridian, Mississippi during their WhistleStop Weekend. The Meridian Railroad Museum had their railfest and the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Historical Society had their annual convention and Soule SteamFest had their annual open house. We were also joined by noted author J. Parker Lamb. Sit back and enjoy the visit to the great railroad town of Meridian.

This week, the Amazing Chris Guenzler will give a recap of the Alaska NRHS 2013 Convention, which was held in Fairbanks, Alaska, September 14th through September 17th, and Anchorage, Alaska, September 18th through September 22nd. Chris and Elizabeth Alkire will talk about their experiences of the convention in the 50th and largest State in the United States. All of the trips we did at this unique convention and what it was like to be car hosting at this event. Listen to this show about trains trips in our 50th State.
The Arborway, T.T. & Northwestern Railroad near Steelville, Mo., is one of the largest private miniature railroads in North America. The ATT&NW is considered a "Grand Scale" railroad. The rails are spaced 15" apart, and everything is about a third actual size, but the technology and engineering are the same as "real" railroads. The freight cars, all equipped with air brakes and hand brakes just like their full-size prototype, can each weigh as much as a big motorcycle or a small car, and the railroad's largest locomotive weighs about ten tons. As a result, operations are undertaken under the guidance of railroad rulebooks with "Safety First" as the theme of all activity. The "crown jewel" of the ATT&NW is steam locomotive #801, a 4-8-4 "Northern" class locomotive. The ATT&NW has about 5 miles of track on the ground; the main line run is around 3- 5/8 miles long, most of it on a 2% up or down grade. The railroad features a spectacular single- and double-track main line graded to actual railroad specifications, two tunnels, one wood bridge. We will visit the vision of the late St

The Amazing Chris Guenzler talks about his trips he has taken from 7/16/2013 to 7/28/2013. Chris took Surfliner 583 to LA then the Southwest Chief to Chicago. Coach on the Capitol Limted to Connesville where Dave Smetko met me. We did the doodlebug on the Wilmington & Western Railroad. The next day we did two Iron Heritage Festival Trips then did the Friday night Black River & Western Railroad Caboose Hops Ringoes to Three Bridges. The next day we did the Steam into History {Not} aboard the Northern Central Railroad after that we did Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association with Pennsylvania Railroad 0-6-0 653. We then did the drive back to Chicago and the Monon Connection Museum and then back to Daves House. The next day I did the La Plata via West Quincy trip. I finally rode into West Quincy. I then went to Depot Inn & Suites for a rest. Then he took the Southwest Chief home. Bart Jennings called

Join ShuttletrainTed and Mrs. Shuttletrain as they take part in the Grand Opening of the Village of Park Forest Rail Park.The village of Park Forest will officially unveil its latest park, and what village officials are hoping will be a national tourist destination, the Park Forest Rail Fan Park, on Saturday, July 27. The park, just across from one of Park Forest’s Metra lots is the site of one of the country’s largest rail intersections, where the north/south Canadian National main line intersects the east/west rail arc formerly owned by the EJ&E Railway. Upon purchasing the 198 mile EJ&E rail arc, CN constructed the necessary track for rail interconnection. Visitors of the new park can view the train action from a 35 foot-high platform overlooking the rail tracks and intersection. Park Forest officials as well as Canadian National representatives will take part in the taping of the show. Representatives from the regional Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce will also be on ha will take part in the taping of the show.

Just imagine... It's early morning, with thick fog surrounding you, you are standing trackside, with a camera in-hand. You hear in the distance, the chug of a locomotive coming towards you, and you hear the whistle announcing it arrival. It gets louder and lounder and then, through the fog, the engine emgerges, cutting through the thick fog like a knife, in all of her glory. You stand there, watching her pass by in awe---forgetting that you are wanting to get a photo of her---amased by her power and absolute beauty. Though, sadly, as time passes, her fire has been dumped and she quitely waits, under a protective shed next to her cousin, for another chance to run under her own power. One of the big events will be the arrival of the newly restored F units, painted in the livery of the Santa Fe Warbonnet, probably the most recognizable paint scheme in the history of railroading. The Amazing Chris Guenzler will give you a recap of the NRHS 2012 Convention in Cedar Rapids. We started with the trip on Amtrak on the Southwest Chief and Metra out to Hanover Park. Dave Smetko and I went East Troy to ride the trolley then we went to ride the Rockford Park District Trolley Car 36 and then did the Silver Creek and Stephenson Railroad, The next day Metra into Chicago for the the inbound train from Chicago train to Cedar Rapids.We went to the Midwest Treashers and Midwest Electric Railway. Then we did diesel to Rock Island and Steam west . The next day we took the steam train to Newton. The next day we went the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and did the steam train and trolley. The rare mileage Crandic Line was the next trip was the Iowa Northern Railway Cedar Rapids to Waterloo and the final trip was the Northern Railway Cedar Falls to Manly.The next day NRHS Special Train Cedar Rapids to Chicago and Metra out to Dave's house then the next day Metra into Chicago and the Southwest Chief to La Plata for a rest. Back on the Southwest I passed my 1,350,000 on the way home.

So the Amazing Chris had to do the show from a nice cool Pullman Suite on a hot day outside.

The Amazing Chris Guenzler will explain were Amtrak came from---the last day of Public Trains on April 30, 1971, and Amtrak's birth on May 1, 1971. We will also talk about Amtrak's history, from the early days to the present. What caused Amtrak to be formed and the steps that led up to its formation by the Nixon Adminstration. Amtrak has come a long way since May 1st, 1971 and lets hope it with us in the future.

Trains Magazine columnist Don Phillips will be Bob and Elizabeth's guest on Saturday's show. He has covered transportaion for many years including the formation of Amtrak and Conrail and deregulation. Mr Phillips has covered every major train wreck and airline crash since 1989. In addition he has written about international transportation issues for the International Herald Tribune. Skip Waters of Dallas, TX returns again as your host for the Lets Talk Trains show. The topic is "Hey Railfan, Are you a Terrorist?" Skip will discuss the current state of affairs surrounding railfans and photography. What do the railroads and the public think of railfans shooting trains? Joining Skip will be Richard Whitenight who in 2002 was reported in the Washington Post as being grilled by the terrorism task force. Richard will tell us what happened. Then we will hear a recent video recording of a shortline railroad accusing some local railfans as being terrorists. Followed by a current Special Agent letting us know how the railroad feels about railfans and photography in today's environment. Callers are welcome to join. We will learn more of his recent chase and up coming projects. For the past 4 years the North Texas Chapter, NRHS has had the privilege of hosting a 24 hour railwatching event at the Saginaw Depot in Saginaw, Texas over Memorial Day weekend starting on Friday evening and ending Saturday evening for a full 24 hours. In past years we have had approximately 100 or more Railfans attend this event to watch trains day and night.

Let's Talk Trains returns to live programming on Saturday as Bob and Elizabeth Alkire host the show. Their guest will be Scott Lothes who presented a program at Winterail titled Along Steam's Last Mainline. Mr Lothes is a free lance photographer and writer. He is also a project director for the Center for Railroad Photography and Art. His work appears frequently in Trains Magazine and other rail publications. On May 8, 2010, people and organizations around the United States will celebrate the third annual National Train Day, celebrating the event that took place on May 10, 1869 in Promontory Summit, Utah--where East meet West with a ribbon of iron-rail and was finalized with a golden spike. Events, around the country, will take place this weekend and we would like to hear from you and tell us about how people from around the country are celebrating in your area. If that means, sitting along your favorite right-of-way, or sitting in front of your computer screen, listing to your favorite Internet radio talk show--talking about trains--or attending one of the organized events around the country, we want to hear from you.
May Day! This week's show will be hosted by Nick Ozorak, creator of the Virtual Railroading series "At The Railyard". Noted steam entrepreneur Ross Rowland will be Bob and Elizabeth's guest on Let's Talk Trains.
