Will you trust that his way is better?

Jesus isn’t inviting us to his message, he’s not inviting us to a workshop, he’s inviting us to Himself. Into his life, into his circle.

This is a unique request because only Jesus has this unique authority.

Week 1 of Our New Series “Encounter” starts today! Over the next 5 weeks, we’ll be looking at real-life stories in the Bible about people who encountered Jesus.

With each encounter, we’re going to challenge you to step back into time and discover what that face-to-face, nose-to-nose, eyeball-to-eyeball personal encounter with Jesus must have been like.

Our hope and prayer is that you will have your own encounter with Jesus.

Sometimes when we hit a wall, we try to wrap our heads around what God is doing. Our hearts pound and our legs tremble and we shake at the wall. It feels as if there’s no getting around it.

Today, we look at how Habakkuk responds to his wall experience. For us, his journey can be a blueprint of sorts. A guide for our own dark night seasons.

It’s almost like talking to a seasoned runner as you prepare for a marathon who says, “Yeah I get it. I too have faced the wall. But here’s how I got through it.” That’s what Habakkuk Chapter Three offers us.

God doesn’t waste the waiting! He’s not just working on your circumstance, he’s working on YOU.

No matter what life feels like right now, know that God will be faithful to you. If you doubt that remember this truth:

Maybe instead of MORE we actually need LESS? 🤔

Evangelism is NOT a Lost Cause! 📢🙌

Jesus said his mission and the reason he came to earth was
“…to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

And like Jesus, we too have a mission. As a matter of fact, His mission is our mission. Together, let’s partner with God in His passion, Jesus in His mission, and live out the commission He’s given us every day.

Maybe we have a PR problem??

In a Barna survey earlier this year…
42% of people with no faith say that “the hypocrisy of Christian people” causes them to doubt the Christian faith. (Barna)
So Yikes 😬maybe we have a PR problem??

But here is the good news: Jesus didn’t think anyone was a lost cause. And if we’re going to overcome our current situation, we need to SEE people like Jesus SAW people!

Today is Week 3 of our series Lost Cause! Together let’s fix this🙌

The things that we value capture our hearts, which shapes what we think about, which then affects how we act, and ultimately…Who we become.

So, when it comes to your life and your relationships and how you spend your time and energy, how highly do you value evangelism? How important is it to you to share your faith with others?

When you think about these things, you might ask yourself

Why should we care about “seeking and saving the lost?”
Why should we care about the lost at all?

Well, here’s the short answer…because God does 😌

Imagine what could happen in your co-worker’s life, your child’s life, your friend’s life, or your spouses’ life if you heard from God and shared a word that would strengthen, encourage, and comfort them?💙

Imagine what could happen in your own life if you received words like that from them!!

Today, let’s open ourselves to the supernatural way God wants to work among us. Let’s hear from him for each other😊.

Sometimes God speaks in a way that is often subtle and can easily be missed. But, when we pay close enough attention, you might just hear his whisper 👂

Jesus explains it like this 🙌

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” - Isaiah 30:21

The Spirit of God is with us, guiding us with a whisper. Even Jesus himself has this picture of a whisper in mind when he describes the Holy Spirit.

But what does this actually look like for us, to hear God’s whisper?

The whole idea of hearing from God might sound a bit mysterious to some and to others maybe even a little crazy 🤔.

But, when we are attentive to the voice of God, he invites us into a relationship with him.

He wants to dismantle your old limited ways of thinking about who he is, what he did, and what he came to do so that your life may be transformed.

Sometimes, we don't see the whole picture 🏞️

So here’s something to consider...💭

A similar thing is true when it comes to Scripture. When we read the Bible, what we see is somewhat limited by our viewpoints and experiences. On our own, we likely aren’t getting the whole picture. And this is why we were meant to explore the kingdom together!

In order to see all that God has for us in His word, we need to hear from others. We can learn a lot from someone else’s perspective.

You are genetically wired to be generous!

When we see generosity, we instinctively know it’s beautiful. It moves something deep down inside of us. And why? Because we’re wired to be generous! It’s part of who we are. It’s in our DNA!

Of course, in our broken world, we all have had experiences and made choices that short-circuited our generosity wiring. We all struggle with selfishness. But when we witness or experience generosity, it’s like this truest part of us gets triggered and we remember who we are.

So, how does it feel when you are generous with your time, talent, or treasures?

At COMMUNITY, we are passionately committed to the church. We believe that Jesus is the hope of the world, and he chooses to bring that hope to the world through the church.

But, we still want to wrestle honestly with this question, “Why Church?” and the best place to start is to try to understand why God created the church.

When God created people, God made us to bear God’s image and put us in charge of all of creation. God wants us to be representatives, ambassadors, and replicas of God in this world!

But why? Why did he intend for us to be a community of people that represent him in this world?

This week you will be challenged to see things from a different perspective.

Everyone has their own perspective - It’s only natural. Each person is shaped by their own culture, experiences, and traditions, and sometimes that creates a challenge. You may not be able to see the complete picture or gain the fullest understanding if you are relying on your own experience.

But what if you looked into the lives of those around you from a different perspective? That is what this series is about and this week we are looking at the parable of the Prodigal Son from different perspectives.

As it had been said every week: A disciple is someone who hears from God and does what he says.

Throughout this series, as we’ve learned about the Kingdom of God, we have dug into one of Jesus’ most important teachings, the Sermon on the Mount.

So, this week as we wrap up our series YOU+, let’s listen to the words of Jesus and accept his challenge together!

Just think about the last conflict you had with someone in your life. When butting heads or arguing with someone, it’s easy to think “I know”.

But what if, instead of assuming you know better, you lead with a curious posture? Instead of being suspicious of that person, you gave them the opportunity to explain their perspective.

How could that change the way we connect with each other?

Imagine a life without worry when it comes to wealth and possessions. Imagine a life where you feel peace, contentment, and freedom.

Everyone worries in their own way. But is there a way we don’t have to do it alone? The truth is Jesus wants to help us.

In Mathew 6:33 Jesus says,
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” -Matthew 6:33

This is the way; This is how we can live a flourishing life! Together let’s seek his Kingdom first.

We’re 7-weeks into our YOU+ series! The whole intention behind this YOU+ series is to help us grow in the ways of God’s kingdom… to help us become disciples who hear from God and do what he says. YOU+ is an invitation to step into the “life and life to the full” (John 10:10).

This week, as we continue to learn from The Sermon on the Mount, in what ways do you desire approval in your life? The truth is we all do!

But why? Why do we care about what others think? Why do we want approval from others?

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been diving into the Sermon on the Mount to learn from Jesus and we’ve been calling this the “YOU+ life”.

It is life lived in God’s Kingdom, and we enter into it by being Jesus’ disciples, people who hear from God and do what he says. So what better way to learn from Jesus than to look at one of his most famous sermons!

One thing to think about for this week, is what if you were there that day? Imagine watching him deliver this sermon and listening to what he said. Do you think his sermon would be received differently by you? Do you think Jesus would rub off on you?

Most people in our world live a YOU life. But Jesus came to bring us a different kind of life…a flourishing kind of life… what we’re calling the YOU+ life.
Jesus described it this way:
“I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” - John 10:10
But moving from the YOU life to the YOU+ life can cause a kind of spiritual, mental, and emotional jetlag. It’s a difficult adjustment. You have to move from one reality you’ve been living in to another.
But although it maybe a difficult adjustment, we believe that we can do it together.
For week 2 of our series YOU+,  let’s choose to continue living a flourishing life. A life aligned with the Kingdom of God!

The YOU+ life is a flourishing life lived as a disciple of Jesus. What is a disciple? A person who hears from God and does what he says.
Today, we are beginning not just a series that can lead you into this YOU+ life; we’re beginning a new season here at COMMUNITY centered on helping one another live this YOU+ life as disciples of Jesus.
We want to invite you to have a YOU+ conversation.

God Came Down.

The Christmas story is shocking because the perfect God came to be with us in our imperfect humanity.

No matter what memories or emotions the words of the Christmas story conjure up, it can be easy with all the familiarity to miss the radically shocking truth at the center of the story.

But, what would motivate God; someone, so good, so pure, and so perfect to come down to humanity? Well, you might know the answer 😉

This Christmas, know that no matter who you are… God came down for YOU. God is accessible to YOU. God includes YOU.

And don’t forget, after you listen to the message let us know your thoughts below!

We all have a dream, a version of who we want to be and what we want to accomplish or experience. And, most of us give our very best effort to become every bit of the person we hope to become.

But sometimes, reality has a way of bringing us face to face with life’s limitations.

Whether it be your work, relationships, body, finances, or even Christmas, so often what we dream versus what we experience leaves us feeling inadequate.

So, here's the good news…

Although the things that limit you are difficult, what if the places and the things that limit you are the exact thing or place God wants to do his best work?

In the final week of our series Know thyself, we are talking about the Popularity Lie.

We want people to like us. Sometimes we are addicted to what other people think of us. And, why is that? Maybe it’s because you received too little affirmation growing up, OR perhaps you had become addicted to what other people think of you because you actually received TOO much empty affirmation growing up. Whatever it may be, it is easy to be pressured to live in ways that can run contrary to the fullness of life that God intends for you. People have been bound, constrained, and deformed by a world and a culture often at odds with flourishing. In fact, the way most people live, think, and interact with others serves to either bind or unbind our souls.

So, with all that being said, behind all this pressure is a powerful lie that people are susceptible to… a lie that often powerfully pressures most to conform. It’s the lie of popularity.

After you watch the message, let us know what you think in the comments below. Are you susceptible to the popularity lie? How can you stay away from this lie and live a life of flourishing with Jesus?

As we continue our series The Book of Philippians our focus is on our mindset. What if we fully adopt the mindset of Christ when we follow his example of sacrificial love?

As followers of Jesus, WHERE are we supposed to shine the spotlight?

These types of questions are what we really want to challenge ourselves with as we go through this series and even after!

To be Christ-centered and to walk humbly knowing that the focus and attention is on our savior Jesus Christ.

After you watch let us know what you think below! How can you continue to adopt the mindset of Christ?

In our series, Profiles in Courage, we are looking to the Old Testament and examining the lives of people who came face-to-face with incredible challenges and yet somehow found the courage to rise up.

This week, we are looking at the special story of Esther.

Have you ever watched someone go from rags to riches? Ya know, someone who goes from being an average person to a totally different life of fortune. Well, in Esther’s story she goes from being a poor orphan to becoming a queen! But, although that might be great for a little while, things escalate and get complicated pretty quickly. (Insert Ron Burgundy quote 😅)

One thing Esther has to come to a conclusion about is that she is who she is for a REASON! God had a purpose for her! Just like God has a purpose for you!

After you watch, can you think of a purpose that he has for you? Ask God to guide you and show you what he has in store for you! P.S. we’d love to help (hello@communitychristian.org)

Comment below and let us know your thoughts!

In week two of our series Profiles in Courage, we are talking about how the commitment to follow Jesus will give us courage.

What is something you need the courage to get through? How can you let God help guide you through that situation?

The reality is, there is a good chance you are challenged by things in life that you aren’t meant to do alone.

For example, what happens when you are challenged to do the right things? When the outside temptation becomes too big for you. The world we live in today can sometimes be hard to take on by yourself.

But, when you let your faith and your commitment to Jesus be a reminder of what you believe, you can do the right thing. Maybe there was a scenario in the past where you did not stand up for what you believed in. Well, you are not alone. All of us are fighting against the temptation and FOR the mission God wants for us.

What is one way that you can stand up for what’s right? Have the courage to stand up for it!

After you watch the talk, let us know what you think in the comments below!

In the last week of our series Do The Work, we are focusing on a task that can be difficult for anyone.

Initiation.

Throughout this series, God may have brought a relationship to mind that you would like to see restored. Initiation is where that process can start for you.

To initiate the conversation might be intimidating, but it is for almost everyone! COMMUNITY wants to help you through this process. In the previous weeks of this series, we talked about a few different steps to relational restoration. This week is the cherry on top of starting that process. Take the first steps with us.

After you watch the message challenge yourself and see how you can apply it to one of your relationships.

Lastly, let us know what you think in the comments below.

In week three of our series Do The Work we are focusing on the importance of forgiveness.

In your relationships it is important to choose forgiveness over resentment or bitterness. When you hold grudges it can take a toll on you and weigh you down. Relationships are important, and when you hold conflict in your heart it pushes you away from the people you love most.

As you watch the message above take some time to reflect and think of a relationship you can work on. Relationships can be hard, that is why it is important to Do The Work!

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Are there things that you need to forgive as you reflect? How can you do the work for your relationships?

In week two of our series Do The Work we are addressing one of the most difficult relational skills, a skill that is critical to healthy relationships. To restore relationships we believe we have to do the work of Self-Awareness!

Let's be honest with ourselves… no one likes being wrong!

Becoming more self-aware is about noticing our wrongs and being able to own up to them even when we don’t want to.

The best thing about being self-aware is that it can help us with our relationships like helping us be more considerate of others which can leads to relational restoration!

After you watch the message let us know what you think below, and let’s all take some time throughout your week to focus on being more self-aware!

We can all probably agree… relationships are hard 😅.

As a church community, we’re leaning into and unpacking relationships in our new series: Do The Work.

You may be someone who has experienced some pain through relationships, or maybe you are going through a tough time in a relationship right now. No matter the circumstances, you are not alone, and we want to help you go through that season.

Here at COMMUNITY, we believe that relational restoration begins with us. So, in this first week of our series we want to talk about YOU! You’re interested in that topic right?! 😉

After you watch, let us know your thoughts in the comments. Then, focus on yourself this week. Not in a self-centered way, but in a way that seeks to bring relational restoration. Watch the message to learn what we’re talking about.

What are some ways you can work on yourself to help your relationships?

“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27)

Two key character traits we see in Jesus' life were his generosity and his patience. Just like him, we too can be generous and patient.

As we talk about what it means to be FOR generosity and AGAINST selfishness, we believe generosity can be expressed in three different ways.
 • In our HEART
 • With our TIME
 • Through our RESOURCES
We will talk about what exactly that means up above! After you watch the video, let us know your thoughts down below in the comments!

In week 2 of our series What We’re (Actually) Against we are talking about the battle against loneliness.

Loneliness is something we all can experience from time to time. But, there are ways that we can fight against loneliness and rely on our community. Or… more importantly our church family!

As you watch, challenge yourself to think about how you can join the fight against loneliness.

How can you keep yourself from being lonely?
How can you help others from being lonely?
How can you help your church family from being lonely?

Then, throughout your week keep this in mind. Strive to be there for others AND yourself.

The good news is that we do not have to be lonely as long as we work together in our community.

Too often we can get into a disagreement that can cause an argument that leads to division. Luckily that is something we can prevent🥳 ! Jesus was perfect and with that he had peace with everyone. Something we can try and do is copy that posture!

Let us know what you think! How can you take the posture of peace and unity! After you watch the video let us know your thoughts!

“What does it mean that Jesus is humble?”

When he was here on earth he made many sacrifices. And no matter how many he made he always walked a path of humility…

Although he deserved all praise and glory, Jesus set aside the PRIVILEGE of being God’s only son so that he could serve us and continue to focus on his mission. Although Jesus was tempted, he became obedient to his PURPOSE. He lived his life free of sin so that he could show us his humble heart. He made a loving sacrifice so that we could continue our relationship with him. Jesus emptied himself and took a lowly position so that he could become more APPROACHABLE to us.

Therefore, in our relationships with each other, how can we act in humility to have the same mindset as Jesus? (Philippians 2:5)

No matter the circumstance, he will continue to put us over himself because he loves us. We can be more like Jesus when we set aside our privileges, focus on our purpose, and take a lowly position to be more approachable!

In week 2 of our series Jesus Is…, we are talking about what we can do when we feel guilt, and how our loving Father understands us. Jesus was also tempted, and if anything, he was tempted more than all of us! In fact, the reality that Jesus was without sin means that he knows the depths and the power of temptation more deeply than we will ever know it.

Therefore, when we fall into sin, he understands. He knows the power of temptation we were up against because he has been there. When we go through our trials, it makes all the difference when we talk to someone who has been there.

The good news is that Jesus has been there, and he understands you. He loves you, and treasures you for who you are.

Are you alive? You are breathing, your heart is beating, so yes, you are alive. But are you really living?

In Ephesians 2:1-10, Paul reminds us that before Jesus rose from the dead, we were dead in our sins. The bad news: We’re all sinners (Romans 3:23). The good news: If you’re a sinner, you fit right in with the rest of us. And the even better news? God has made a way for us to get back to really living.

Jesus is risen! Jesus is alive! (Matthew 28:1-7) And because he is alive, we too can now live...really live. His resurrection is our resurrection.

We need others to help us grow, to see the things we can’t see in ourselves, to meet our physical needs when we can’t do it ourselves, and to point us to God. We all need these things to make it through our days, and to really thrive in our lives. That’s why we talk about Small Groups so often… because it’s in these small communities where the good stuff of life really happens. Do you long for emotional support for the ups and downs of life? And do you want to experience God? We’ve all heard the phrase “it’s better to give than receive” (in fact, Jesus said it!), and most of us have personally experienced it! On Christmas morning, it’s fun to open gifts, but it’s really magical to watch your kids open that present they’ve been hoping for. It might feel great to buy yourself a new gadget or outfit, but it really feels good to give your friend a special gift you know they’ll love. And yet, there are many roadblocks to living a generous life: we might feel like we’re barely scraping by and can’t afford to give anything away, or we’re worried that our needs might not be met if we give away too much. Jesus knew that giving not only changes the receiver, but it also hugely changes the giver, and that’s why he told us it’s so important to be a generous giver. Want to be changed for the better? Here’s the truth: most Americans are in consumer debt. It’s considered “the norm” in our society to put things we don’t need on credit cards. And you’d think all that stuff we want would make us happy, right? But it doesn’t. In fact, once that credit card bill is due and you realize you now have to pay for that thing (plus interest!), stress, worry, and shame begin to replace that initial happiness. For many of us, it’s an endless cycle with seemingly no way out. But Jesus wants so much more for us than this. He wants us to live freely, and to not be consumed with financial stress. There will always be circumstances outside of our control — seasons of unemployment, unexpected medical bills… or, you know, a global pandemic— but we can all take an honest look at our habits and start working toward financial freedom. Does it ever feel like you’d be happy if you had just a little bit more? Maybe you think a bigger house, a newer car, or a pay bump at work would make you happier. But if you’ve ever experienced any of those things — getting a raise, buying yourself something bigger or better — you probably also soon realized that it didn’t solve all your problems or make you happier. In fact, often, it just sets us off in a never-ending cycle of wanting more — this is where the term “lifestyle creep” comes in. Once you’re in the cycle, “more” is never enough. God has a vision for every aspect of our lives, and that includes our finances. God doesn’t want us to set our sights on making more, having more, and desiring more. Instead, God tells us that true freedom is found when we transform into his vision for us, find peace in our situations, and practice gratitude rather than greed. Check out this message for more.

You might know that Jesus picked 12 people — called his apostles — to follow him, learn from him, and spread his good news. What you might not know is that they were an unlikely bunch! Jesus could’ve included anyone he wanted, but he intentionally called an unlikely and diverse group. Some members likely wouldn’t have associated with one another, or would’ve held prejudiced opinions toward others. But Jesus called this group together because he didn’t just want people to follow him — he also wanted people to become a family with one another! He wanted them to pursue solidarity together. Loneliness: it’s something all of us experience it. You can be surrounded by friends and family and still feel deeply isolated and alone. You can be in a loving marriage and still feel lonely. You could have lots of great friends and still feel it. Nobody is immune to experiencing it. And because we all experience it, we all know how hard it is. He knows the pain of feeling alone — like nobody really gets what you’re going through — and he doesn’t want that for us. Instead, he wants us to experience belonging… the gift of being seen, being known, and being loved for exactly who you are. Do you need to receive that gift today? Check out this message.

This might not be a fun exercise, but can you think of a time you were at your lowest? Maybe you’d been through a terrible breakup, you were fired from a job, or you felt disapproval from your family and friends. You may have felt messy, unimpressive, and unloveable. Maybe you’re even in that place right now. No matter where you are now, we’ll all have times in life where we feel like we’re just not enough — or maybe that we’re too much… too needy, too messed up, too broken. But when Jesus was born, the world turned upside down. From that point on, nobody was “too much” or “not enough.” Jesus came to say “you are loved” no matter what anyone else thinks of you. And he showed this by actively seeking out those who the world called “the least.” Those are the people he wanted to be around, wanted to embrace, and wanted to connect with most. So if you're feeling messy, unimpressive, or like an outsider, watch this message and experience the truth.

When you lose something like that, you immediately drop everything — finding that lost item becomes your priority! You turn your world upside down to find that precious item. And that’s how Jesus feels about us, his beloved treasures who he loves beyond measure. When we’re lost, he wants us to be found. Being found means knowing that we’re loved, believing that we belong, and understanding that we have great purpose — and that’s what Jesus wants for us more than anything. What do you believe about heaven and hell? Some of us were taught that they’re physical places, completely separate from our lives on earth, and our goal in life is to “get into” heaven or “stay out” of hell. Some of us are so uncomfortable with the idea of hell that we just ignore it, or stop believing in its reality. The truth is, we know heaven and hell are real — Jesus talked about them. But, there are so many misconceptions about them, and some of us have meandered far from the truth of what they really are. Listen to this message and hear how we break down those misconceptions, and talk about how we should live our lives — right here, and right now — in light of their existence.

What does it mean to be part of a church family? It isn’t about getting dressed up in your Sunday best and going to the service each week. Nor is it about joining groups, going to church events, and volunteering. It’s also not about checking a bunch of obligations off a to-do list. It’s about being a part of God’s Kingdom community here on earth. It’s about recognizing that we are so much better when we live life together. It’s about giving, receiving, growing, learning, working, resting, celebrating, mourning, and simply being there for one another. How do you picture God? Throughout history, in an attempt to make sense of God, people have misrepresented God as many caricatures: a “Cosmic Cop” whose rules must be obeyed, a “Jolly Grandpa” who just wants us to do whatever we desire, or a transactional “Genie-in-a-Bottle” who exists only to grant our wishes. Do you feel like you're in control of your money, or is your money in control of you? According to a recent study, 90% of Americans say money has an effect on their stress levels, and almost 2/3 of Americans feel like their financial difficulties are piling up so high that they can’t overcome them! One thing is for certain: most of us have a broken relationship with money. Money in and of itself isn’t bad, but when we misuse it, serve it, and let it run our lives, we need help. If you’re stuck, there’s a better way. Rather than holding onto our money for dear life (which doesn’t seem to work too well for us!), let’s learn to serve God instead of serving our money. There are a couple views people have of Jesus, who walked the earth 2000 years ago:

  • He was a human being - and ONLY a human being. A good teacher, and a good example to follow.
  • He was the divine in human form - a SUPERHUMAN. Sure, he was physically a person, but did he really get what it's like to be a mere human being?

As Christ followers, we tend to think of him as the latter. And certainly, he was the divine even as he lived on earth. But we can't forget that he was also FULLY human. Fully divine, and fully human. He experienced the pains and struggles that all humans do.

And this has a couple of implications for us:
1. It means that his call to be his apprentices isn't some outlandish, impossible standard. He was fully human as he lived on earth and loved its people, and we have the ability to love just as he did.
2. It means Jesus gets us. He knows what we're going through. Every pain, hurt, frustration, and struggle we go through... our Lord understands.

When things don’t go our way we typically respond with anger, doubt, or frustration. Drawing on the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, we’ll see that even when things don’t go our way, we can remain hopeful. In the middle of waiting on God to come through, hope says wait, remember, and trust.

What would it look like if we followed Jesus the way early Christians did? It may look a little UPSIDE DOWN by today's standards 🙃

What if we chased love over power, gave generously instead of wanting more, and cared for the most vulnerable instead of having a "survival of the fittest" mentality? How would we change? How would the witness of the church change?

We could know Jesus more, live our faith more powerfully, and have a huge impact on those around us.
