It is better to start out as being harder and firmer then you would like to be and gradually soften up a bit to show that you can be kind as well, but only after establishing a solid first impression that you are willing and able to be stern

Life does not need to be a zero sum game though. So I will say, being feared is a priority (willing to throw someone out of a group) and being loved (having those under you have a positive impression of you) is an important compliment to the former.

Fear is like a clogged funnel. With said clog, the water (your time & energy) are redirected elsewhere. But once that clog (fear) is removed, the water is not only able to flow into that funnel, but all the endless possibilities that lie beyond it.

When I was 20 and an exchange student in China, I discovered my love of solo trekking. During my trek to NYC at 21, I learned that you can't do it all by yourself. There are just too many factors in play when you are a stranger in a strange city. Something is bound to go wrong.

There are going to be followers that take advantage of you when you are weak, but when you have known people for a while and have been leading them competently, when you show a weakness, (not ineptitude) it humanizes you. Showing that flash of vulnerability has a disarming effect that is difficult to explain.

While differentiating between regret and hindsight bias requires the use of empathy in looking back retrospectively, preventing regret is forward looking using a concept called premortem.
Life Update: I did my first podcast interview last week talking about my experience as an EFL teacher in Thailand. I found that I'm still slightly autistic in the manner that I'm not the most socially aware person. I was telling a story about my yellow food coloring laden water guns and how I used them in class. By the interviewer's body language when he started covering his mouth I knew he didn't like the story. I only recognized this in hindsight when I was watching the recording.
What I find humorous others may not especially since many of the things I did would not be allowed in an American school. A valuable lesson to take away.
I'm used to watching myself on camera, I cringed when watching the podcast interview though as it was not just a monologue which I normally do but a conversation with another person. Reminds me of when I recorded my lectures last November, I tolerate watching those videos now after watching it so many times. I'll do the same with this interview recording.

It's not that no one cares, its a matter of working through the process of being discovered. I need to be like the North Vietnamese (all politics aside). When you're always right, the expectation is that you'll continue being right. And that need to be the smart guy (gal) who's always right blinds you.
The smart ones have a fear of loss as no one wants to lose a good reputation. They become very risk adverse, always making the right decision, the smart pick, based on probability. They are unwilling to take leaps of faith because they want to keep what they've got. And by that logic, they spend their lives huddled in their own small corner of the world and don't achieve anything notable, at least not anything as notable as they could have if they were willing to take leaps of faith.

I loved history since early childhood, but during my freshman orientation at the University of Nevada, Reno, I decided to go practical and change my major from history to accounting. I told one of the other freshman it was nice and steady, which is why I picked it. I've learned since then that the practical choice ain't always the best choice.

Continuous hard work is the long hard grind after gaining initial proficiency, not the initial easy gains. Real hard work is a marathon, not a sprint. Real hard work is when you hit the wall and you aren't motivated to do anything. A persistent effort and a persistency is key.

I've failed. Failed to make my students better students. Failed to inspire change. And failed to live up to my expectations. That's the burden I take with me in the classroom I'm sitting in.
