We talk food . . . a lot! I have a background in food science that goes back 25 years now. Over the course of that time, I have studied wellness from pretty much every aspect from Ayurveda to Chinese medicine, from Reiki to Reflexology, from Yoga to Tai Chi, from sound healing to my fun days at Stanford School of Medicine.
I look forward to learning about you, mentoring you, supporting you, and being your BIGGEST cheerleader right now on your wellness journey!
Happy Validation Day! Wait . . . what? Did I miss some memo here?

For decades upon decades, we as women have been conditioned that if we want to lead, if we want to be powerful, if we want to be taken seriously, we need to be strong, show less emotion, be ruthless, be less caring. Basically, we have been taught to leave our femininity behind as it is a sign of weakness and step toward being more masculine.
Thankfully, we know better know, or at least we are starting to. In this episode, we go into why we stepped away from our femininity leaving behind some of our most powerful instincts, and how to connect with it.
I am honoured to share this conversation I had with Carole Tetreault, shaman, Reiki master, spiritual guide, and facilitator of the Wild Feminine course. You can learn more about Carole on her website, through her Wild Feminine Course, by listening to her Blue Feathered Stories podcast, or on Instagram.

Today you and I are building a bridge between your natural instincts, the ones that you were born with and bubble up inside of you every single day, and your emotions, all those up and down emotions you are feeling.
Once we can build that bridge together, it is time to start our training to develop your killer instincts. We go into why we need to work on our instincts, how it ties into our emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing, how to tune into them, and the three things you need to know if you really want to have killer instincts.

For nearly a decade I would have called myself a very happy coffee addict. My two cups of morning coffee was sacred, a critical piece of my self-care, practically a religion really, then everything changed.
In this episode I take you through my journey from coffee addict to matcha Momma and we look at the benefits of each, why you might consider switching over, how my first few days and weeks went in the transition and what changes I noticed pretty much immediately.
In this episode I also chatted about a special giveaway from my friends at VitaHealth where one lucky winner get a bag of the organic matcha I buy from them and a $50 gift card. I bet you have never thought of a witch as a self-care expert. Well, maybe it is time we change that.
Since we are well into the fall and Halloween is right around the corner I thought it was fitting to look to our cackling, cauldron-stirring sisters for some wisdom on how to take our self-care up a notch.
In this episode I did chat about some of my favourite cauldron concoctions (I am talking about my root chakra nourishing soups), so here is my mini eCookbook I promised I'd share with you witches out there. Before we dive into today's episode, I have to say WOW! AHHHHH! Look at us . . . We did it! This is our official 100th episode. There is no way I can thank you all enough for being here, listening to this episodes, taking the time to reach out to me afterward with follow up questions. You are amazing! The last 3.5 years would not have been possible without every single one of you, so THANK YOU!!!!!!
Okay, today's episode is brought to you courtesy of one of YOU! Mostly because you all ask the best questions. A few weeks ago, I received a question from one of you about the challenges of raising plant-based kids when those around you are not. I get it. I feel you.
My two, that are 7 and almost 10 now, have been plant-based since before they were even born. In this episode, you and I chat about the big questions that I get most often:
In this episode, I also spoke about my one-on-one coaching sessions. For more info on those, you can visit: https://marlabarr.com/booking-homepage/
Sending you, love, light and CONGRATS as this is your 100th episode, too!

At mile 9.5 I walked to the side of the road. I took my shoes and socks off, and I quit. There was no way I was going to finish this half marathon. I'm not a runner. What was I thinking when I registered for this four months back?
That was a few days ago and even though my feet haven't fully forgiven me yet, somehow I am sitting here holding my finisher's medal.
In this episode, I'll walk you through the journey of this run and highlight a new selfceare term: forest breathing. What is it? How to do it? And why it can be beneficial for you.

What is the difference between your emotional health and your mental health? Aren't they just the same thing?
In this episode I walk you through how and why they are totally different topics and both deserve your time and attention. I walk you through a simple emotional check-in practice that I do with my clients, family and friends all the time. We chatted about how there is actually no such thing as a positive or negative emotion and and I walked you through the emotions that reside in our first energy center, our root center.

Mother's Day is a day that has the potential to rouse so many different emotions in everyone; everything from elation to heartbreak is possible depending on who you're speaking to. This day can offer an opportunity to celebrate, honour, and show our appreciation for the women who have shaped us.
May is the month of transformation, on which some people thrive, while others hold on for dear life. Let's honour each other and our experiences by opening ourselves to others' stories of all types, whether they're happy, heartbreaking, or otherwise.
Let's hold space for all the emotions that come with this day. We can reflect on emotions that are not so fun to feel, and turn them into a celebration of the memories you have. Shape the holiday into the day you need for yourself.

As each day passes, more people around the globe are choosing to explore the plant-based or vegan lifestyle.
Everyone's "why" for contemplating this switch is different. Everyone's story is unique. This week I wanted to introduce you to one of these amazingly unique individuals.
John Rush is a professional football player. He is the embodiment of a "man's man" - naturally athletic, loves his pups and the outdoors, probably someone you can imagine having steak and potatoes for dinner most nights of the week. And he was, until four years ago when his coaching team asked him to do something he hadn't done before.

How do you speak to yourself? What do you say when you look in the mirror? What has society confidences you "beauty" is and do you fit into that definition.
I don't. Actually, I don't know anyone that does. In today's episode I sat down with the GREAT Teri Hofford - body image and mindset coach, boudoir photographer, and author of the new book The Geode Theory.
Teri and I chatted about why we look at our bodies the way we do, where that stems from, her farm life, to teaching in Korean for a few years, to working in the diet culture ironically to today, where she stands in front of thousands of women helping them see the gold within.
To learn more about Teri, you can follow her on Instagram or Facebook at @terihoffordsheher, visit her online at www.terihofford.com or purchase her AMAZING new book, The Geode Theory.

I am often asked this question "I want to work on my selfcare. What is the one thing I need to do first?" Oh, Honey, I've got you, because there is one thing that is HUGE. It doesn't have anything to do with food, drinking water, meditating, doing yoga, sleeping well, working to stay away from too much technology. Nope, it doesn't have to do with taking supplements, pills, powders, actually, it doesn't cost a penny to do. And it only takes a minute to do and you only have to do it once in your life. Curious? Let's chat about the 1 thing you can do for your self-care today. In this episode, I also chatted about what my goal weight is - or more accurately what it was - and how to better understand what is behind our goal weights to help empower you to let yours go.

I had been practicing yoga for over 20 years before I started to dig into the rich stories and history of each pose. What were they individually trying to teach us? What little pieces of wisdom were hidden in between the "rise up through your crown" and the " twist as you exhale" moves.
In today's episode, I wanted to look at yoga and helping you through those times when - GRRRR - you are so angry you could kick something, so you and I are about to walk through a 6-pose yoga pose story of rage, revenge, regret and figuring our how to approach what gets us most angry and dealing with those times like a yoga warrior. I should preface this by saying that dealing with life's GRRRR moments DOES NOT mean sitting back on your yoga pillow in blissful meditation listening to crystal bowls play in the background. It means using your fire, your voice, your strength and getting up off your mat to take on the world like a yoga warrior, with equal parts of courage and compassion.
But before you begin, we have to head back a few thousand years as there is someone I want to introduce you to. His name is Shiva and he had this full-on Romeo and Juliet romance going on with his girl Sati. As you might have guessed, her Dad was not on board so Sati then . . . . . I'll save the rest for the episode as we walk through this story, how it can help you deal with your biggest conflicts today, and - of course - we go through this 6-pose yoga flow that you can do in minutes a day to help prep you for the GRRR things on your to-do list today.
Let's go get 'em, Warrior. - Marla

Well, it has been about a year since we checked in with one of our favourite doctors, none other than Dr. Gregory Schwartz, THE Planet doctor. How many best friends do you have? One . . . maybe two . . . or heck maybe five (those are lucky duck friends to all have you). Whatever that answer is for you, I want you to add 265 to that number, because you actually have 265 more best friends that are there for you 24-7, they always have been and always will. AND as a big bonus, you don't have to worry about socially distancing from any of them. So who are these 265 long-lost friends you might ask? I am glad you brought it up because I want to introduce them to you. They are your emotions. Yep, anger, frustration, boredom, joy, happiness, all of those emotions are there to help you each and every day.
In this episode, you and I will pick one of those emotions that are fluttering through your heart and mind right now and we will take it out for coffee. We will sit down across the table from it and - yep - we will talk to it. See what it's been up to. See if there is anything it wants us to know. Once you learn this technique, it is a great way of understanding what is going on in that beautiful heart, mind and body of yours at any given time.
Chances are you have a few friends, maybe even best friends, that would benefit from listening to this chat I put together for you. Please do feel free to share this episode with them.
Sending you and your 265 best friends so much love and light, Dear Soul.
Love, Marla

What is the one word for you that describes how you are feeling right now? Take everything that has been 2020, add it to a pot, stir it up, and look down. You have one word to describe how that collective made you feel, the taste it leaves in your mouth, the stamp it has left on your Soul. I thought about this for some time. The word unhinged seems to fit. It feels like we are all these balloons that were tethered to our life, our families, our friends, our way of life, and through the course of this year, we have become unhinged. What does that mean? How can we understand this? And most importantly, how do we remain steady as we continue to weather this storm together? Let's dive into this episode together and find solace for a moment.
At the end of this episode, I walked you through a special protective meditation with light that I use in situations where the collective energies are weighing on you and you need to form a barrier of love and kindness to protect your beautiful heart and mind. Enjoy, my Dear Friends!
Love and light as always - Marla

It's that time of year where our thoughts turn to the holidays, our favourite dishes, and who might or might not be able to celebrate with us this year. As much as I LOVE to bake, I don't always like what my belly is telling me the next day as some of the ingredients in those GOODIES may not be behaving so good in my belly. Food sensitivities continue to rise, so I am not alone here. More and more we are seeing grocery store aisles lined with foods labelled as gluten-free, dairy-free, or GMO-free.
In this episode, I sat down with Brittany Baker, a lawyer turned gluten-free Goddess of the baking world as we talk about her transition to gluten-free, her company FOMO Baking Co., her love of cookies, and how the food industry is changing for good AND for the good. For more info on Brittany, visit her at FOMO Baking Co. or on Instagram.

Growing up we heard it a million times: "Milk does a body good!" We would see advertisements with our favourite movie stars or athletes sporting a milk moustache with that logo. We believed it. How could we not? But even way back then, scientists and researchers were working in the background and their work pointed toward something very different.
In this episode we look at when we started to drink cow's milk, why it happened, what it does to your body and why we were fed the line "Milk does a body good" for so long. In the episode, I also chatted about a couple of non-dairy options that I love and use in our home. Here are the links for you to those:

It's morning. You peek over at the clock. Yep, time to get up. We stretch and reach for our housecoat when we stop. "Yuck, what's that taste?" The story of what goes on in that gorgeous mouth of yours all night long on a cellular basis might look like an epic thriller of heroes and villains, wars and truces. I won't spoil the grand finale for you, but I promise you'll never look at those pearly whites the same again.
In this episode, we dive into my morning self-care oral routine. In that chat, I reference a few of the items I use. Here are their links:

There are so many types of meditation styles, some calm you, some rejuvenate you, some - let's be honest - put you to sleep. I have been meditating regularly for 30 years now using every style I have come across. In this week's episode, I wanted to share something really special with you as I introduce you to a meditation style that is more of a journey than a "clear your mind" type.
Today we will look at what spirit animal meditations are, and what they are like as I walk you through my most recent S.A. meditation. We dive into the world of animal guides and wisdom we can receive through this mode of connecting with ourselves and the world around us. So let me take you on a journey through the woods. The winds are howling around us. The sun is about to fall below the horizon. We pull our sweaters close around us as we hear the leaves crunch under our feet. We see something ahead. There is someone special that the spirit guides wanted us to meet. Let me take you into this week's episode.
If you have any questions at all after listening to this episode, you can reach out to me at either marla@marlabarr.com or on Instagram at @marla.barr. I love and cherish each and every time you reach out. AND Thank you for taking the time to LEAVE A REVIEW of this show. I get every single one and feel so blessed when I get to hear your words and how you are feeling instead of me doing all the talking here :)
In this episode, I mentioned Carole Tetreault, the amazing Shaman I visited to learn about who my animal spirit guide is and how to best use this information. If you want to touch base with Carole and book your online appointment to get a spirit animal retrieval like I did, you can visit her website or her Instagram at @blue_thunder_bird_woman.

One of Tim's best friend's received a terminal diagnosis. He was willing to do anything he could to help him. When he asked Tim to come to Florida with him for a month to try something different, he jumped at the chance. His journey lead him not only to help his friend totally heal from his diagnosis, but turned Tim's life around.
In this episode, Tim and I chatted about what ailments he was suffering from because of the diet that he was put on; what his first cleanse really felt like; his big "ah-ha" health turnaround moment; his daily wellness routine; and how he is now helping people from all over the world overcome their health issues.

Carole Tetreault is a healer, spiritual guide and is also known as Blue Thunderbird Woman. Marla finds out more about Carole's journey through Shamanism which was enhanced by a book by Don Miguel Ruiz called The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom. Since then, Carole has worked with Shamanism as a form of healing - which includes ancestral healing where the pain from your past lives is addressed.
In this episode, you will find out what is involved in a Shamanic practice, how to connect with your spirit guide, determine your spirit animal and return the happiness that may have fled because of trauma.
Marla also works in conversation about the difficulties of 2020 and how Shamanism can help us digest and address the feelings of grief and trauma that stem from what are uncontrolled happenings. You will learn how to unearth the root of these feelings and address any pain you may be experiencing.

Sometimes we forget that our journey to where we are right now is packed with beautiful stories. For this - our 2-year podcast episode - I thought I would share one of mine with you.
I have been plant-based or vegetarian or . . . well, I get to that in a moment here . . . for 37 years. It didn't happen all at once and there was a boatload of both tiny and huge gifts that shaped the decisions I made.
In this episode, I talked about a handful of the most profound ah-ha moments in my life and their role in this whole vegetarian thing. I also went through the five reasons why I don't consider myself a vegan.
So let's head back in time. I was 7. The leaves had all just changed on that fall evening as we sat down for dinner. I was sitting across from my then 4-year-old brother Craig at the table. My Dad was to the right of me, my Mom to the left, and I looked down at my plate. That's where we begin this story together . . . .
I can't thank each and every one of you enough for the support and comments and for just taking the time to reach out and let me know which episode you just listened to and what you got out of it. These last two years for this show have been a wonderful adventure, and I am so happy that we have been here together for this. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

What can you accomplish in a breath? We inhale, exhale, repeat, and don't think about it. But depending upon our breathing style, we can do so much more.
In this episode, Natalie Suppes, a certified PAUSE breathwork facilitator and Crohn's wellness coach, and I explore this style of breathwork. After over a decade of battling Crohn's disease, Natalie looked for answers to help her body and mind heal. Along the way, Natalie found this breathwork technique that transformed the trajectory for her health.
In this episode, we looked at how PAUSE breathwork: is different than other styles of meditation, mindfulness or breathing exercises, what it can accomplish, and how to perform it.

Is it time to take stock of where you are and how you are doing? So many of us feel that we are off course, stuck in jobs or relationships that are not helping us get to where we should be. Stopping once in a while to check in and see where you are is critical in moving you forward.
In this episode, I sat down with Maurice Thibodeau as we chatted about his Life Inventory Assessment and how it can give you a beautiful picture of where you are and what you should be focusing on in your life (and where you can let it slide). I took Maurice's online assessment in just a few minutes and we went through some of my results live.

How can we find peace, use peace and rise from what is happening in the world right now? This week I sat down with Michael Arterberry, youth development expert and founder and executive director at Youth Voices Center Inc. in Connecticut.
We had been planning this talk for over a month as we were supposed to discuss how to be a role model for our youth and what we can best do to support their wellness and growth. Then a week before we got together, Mr. George Floyd was murdered and our news feeds, social media and conversations with friends and family have been filled with protests and pain, outrage and fear.
As a leader and visionary in the Power of Peace Movement, working for over two decades with at-risk youths, we looked at what has happened, how to deal with this, and where to go from here.
Michael has been a recipient of the 100 Men of Color Award and Educator of the Year. He is an accomplished author, motivational speaker and facilitator of his signature program Power of Peace. You can reach Michael at:

We go to school. We get the job. Then comes the car and the apartment, and we have to work more. The clothes and the vacations come next, and we have to work more. At some point, you might think "What am I doing? Do I really want this? How did I get here?"
In this episode, I sit down with Bret James of High Sierra Permaculture as we talk about his transition from a Denver-based computer programmer to living off the grid on the north shore of Kauai to homesteading in the California Sierra Nevada mountains. We talk about:
Bret wants me to share with you the link to one of the great online courses he teaches on permaculture. I've taken the course and it is wonderful. You can also find Bret on Instagram or on his website.

After the first month in isolation, I had melted into a place of homeschooling, letting go of my old routine and, well, scones. I have always loved scones and I thought there must be some magical way bakers made it that was impossible to recreate. Well, after 2 solid weeks of trying, I perfected some plant-based scone recipes to a point that our favourite time was morning scone-time at 10:30 am. After a month of that, I was feeling pretty darn blah, sluggish, stagnant (but if I come out with a vegan scone cookbook, don't be surprised ;). I needed something to pull me back from the land of homemade scones, so I went online and found a couple of guys doing this crazy thing called the Climb Mount Everest from Home Challenge. I read more and was fascinated not necessarily by their ambitions to climb the real Mount Everest one day, but how I could bring this into my routine and shake of the quarantine blahs.
I came up with this plan to start walking up to my one flight of stairs in our house every day. First, it was just 5 flights. Then I managed to hit 30 flights huffing and puffing. Now I do 108 flights every morning. Every morning.
In this episode I share with you how I started, how I am NOT letting the coronavirus take my endurance, stamina or strength, and how this challenge has been more therapeutic for me that I thought it ever could be.

All of us could use a little laugh right now. Okay, maybe we all need a HUGE crying-in-joy/it-is-hard-to-catch-your-breath/you-won't-need-an-ab-workout-for-a-month kind of laugh. Being in isolation for going on 50 days now, a lot of the things in our lives that used to bring us joy are not possible right now, so we have found our joy in a new place.
At the beginning of 2020, Tiktok was a skyrocketing app that attracted people in the 13-29 age group. So, you've stocked up on your vitamins, have planned your day around the free IG live workouts available, and have committed to do that Climb Everest from a Home challenge. You're ready for this Take-That-Covid-19-You're-Not-Welcome-Here battle, right?
Well, not so fast soldier. I guarantee if you'd stop and take a moment to check in with your beautiful body, mind and heart and say "Hey, troops! Are you ready to bring our A-game?", they'd be all like "Serious!?!?!?!? I have been fighting on the frontlines for you for like your entire life. We need a break, never mind this A-Game stuff".
Then you're like "What? What battle? What have we been fighting?!? Maybe a cold in the winter?"
Your warrior body/mind/heart gives you a little laugh. "Sit down. We have a few things to tell you, Kid".
In order for us all to bring that A-game, we need to fight this virus, to head off onto that immunity battlefield, first, we have to acknowledge the 7 seven battles most of us are fighting every day.
In this episode, you and I go through each of them and address how you can easily start working on this TODAY so that you can let that glorious warrior body-mind-heart of yours get to work on this, one of our greatest battles that we will all face together.

I read an article recently about how and why we overreact. It was penned by Dr. Art Frenz, a wonderful clinical psychologist who practices in upstate New York. Dr. Frenz specializes in stress management, psychological fitness, self-calming skill and dealing with loss and grief.
As I have seen dozens upon dozens of reports of toilet paper to bleach, frozen pizzas to mushrooms, flying off the grocery store shelves, I wondered how you can tell if we are overreacting, reacting or underreacting. What is the difference? What pushes us to either extreme and what tools do we need to fully understand how we react to this current global crisis.
In this episode, Dr. Frenz and I speak about:
Dr. Frenz also spoke about the Serenity prayer and the wisdom we can all pull from it. I have it here below for you:
God, grant me the serenity accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

You see people stocking up on masks and toilet paper, as they await the latest news reports, deciding if our current state with the COVID-19 pandemic will impact their work and their families. We are all currently in a time where our comfort levels with safety and security are being tested. Our emotions are on a roller coaster of sorts as fear - even if we don't want to admit it - creeps in and out of our day. Although we can easily feel helpless, there is so much we can do.
In this episode we look at the four things that are adding to our global response and our individual response to this pandemic, heightening our reaction and the decisions we are making. This week I was actually scheduled to talk to you about our root energy centre, which speaks to our safety need and our fulfillment of security. We then go into my 7-step self wellness plan that you can start putting in place today to help you mentally, emotionally and physically move through this health crisis as well as any other emergency that you might experience. At the end of this episode, you'll find a special meditation I put together for you.

"Marla, I need help working on my belly". "Hummm, okay", I say. "I've tried this workout and this new diet and nothing helps. What can I do?" This is a common question I get. In honest, the only thing that will help you is to understand what is actually going on in and around your beautiful belly, the amazing story it is telling you, and the SUPER IMPORTANT role those Goddess/God-like love handles actually play.
In this episode, you and I chat about your relationship with your belly region, the 4 main reasons our intestines tend to distend and swell. I made up this handy little acronym "D.A.N.G. Girl" to help us remember. Then we go into the only one way that you can work to diminish your love handles if that is your goal, how you DON'T want to get rid of it (spoiler: it's through dieting), and the only one way to prevent additional accumulation of tissue to that lovely midriff of yours.
I hope after listening to this episode you can look at your amazing bellies in an entirely new light. Every glorious cell of yours serves a purpose, and the story of the adipose tissue or fat cells that surround our digestive organs (we just think of them as our love handles or our beer bellies), is amazing and one to be in AWE of. You're gorgeous. You're beautiful. You're perfect. Listen in and let me prove it to you.

As a special Valentine's Day gift to you, I invited Flossie back on to the show all the way from her home in Encinitas, California to talk love, self-love, relationship and where we get it all wrong. I hope this conversation leaves you as inspired, motivated and positive as it did for me.

What if we had it all wrong? What if our thoughts and beliefs on willpower had nothing to do with what is really going on in that beautiful mind and heart of yours.
In this episode you and I talk willpower, but first I need to take you on a little journey to your power energy center, your solar plexus, your digestive center because in order for us to talk about YOUR amazing willpower we need to understand where exactly it comes from (yep, willpower is born in a physical place in your body). I then break apart the three-factor involving your willpower.
Power: Are you getting power, strength, feeding that fire we all have in us? Are you giving that fire what it needs?
Will: How many decisions did you make today were actually yours, decision that you WANTED, desired? You need to have a boatload of will each and every day, or else that elusive willpower falls away from us. This was a great section to talk about motivation, so we spent some time looking at why most of us are NOT motivated and what it means. Your will and your motivation are linked at the hip.
Environment: I don't care how strong or powerful you are, how you have your own free will glistening around you, girl, if you walk by that fav shoe store of yours 17 times a day, at some point, it is going to happen, and now you have the 8th pair of black slings that you don't need. Here we talked about how you only have so many "Nos" in you every day. There are only so many times you can say no. It is a number. You have one. When you get to your daily limit, guess what, the next time you were going to say NO, you will say YES. So we need to talk about your environment and what we can do to ensure that the main areas you spend your time in each day (your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, office, the car, whatever), are environments that fully support your growth, your healing and your epic dreams.
I taped this episode the day after Kobe Bryant and his daughter tragically passed away, so we talked about grieving and what sense we can make out of all of this. I also touched on a message I received from a client about Stevia. That discussion got a little heated.
In the episode, I did mention a couple of links I would put here in the show notes for you. They are a few of my past episodes on understanding your cravings, determining your mind/body type and what you need to know when you are grieving, so here you go.....

With December finally here, it is time for us to start thinking about how to keep you WELL and in tip-top shape all through the holiday season. This time of year can be very taxing as we are all mentally taking stock of the past 12 months, packing our calendars with possibly overindulgent get-togethers, and letting our self-care routine maybe slip.
In this episode, I chat about my top 5 takeaways to keep you flying high this holiday season, then I went with a special jolly-filled meditation focusing on what joy really is and how to let it embody our beautiful Souls.
Here is the link to my VIP Wellness Membership Invitation I spoke about during this episode.

Well, if I told you that a 30-minute podcast episode about menstruation and the moon we would talk about Asian elephants, Alice in Wonderland and Diet Coke, would you believe me? Ha! Well, that is exactly what we did.
This truly is one of my FAVOURITE wellness topics, mostly because no one has ever told us the truth about menstruation. We are not told about its link to our health, our emotions, our crazy Goddess capabilities. We are not told what is really going on and how to harness this awesome magical, biological tool. And you don't hear how and why this is linked to the moon's cycle and what that means.
This entire episode came about when a friend asked me about her daughter's cycle and what some changes meant. They mean A LOT, so let's dive in as in this episode we cover:
Then I chat about iron and calcium as this is also something that comes up often when talking about women's health. I go into . . . why we are iron deficient the role that calcium plays in this deficiency why we are adding WAY to much calcium to our diet what most multivitamins on the market are tricking you and, what is the real culprit in the whole calcium iron problem. Then I spend a bit of time explaining the oat coconut milk that I make at home (cost a grand total of $0.58 for a 2L/half gallon) and my super slick 2-ingredient iron hack that I use it for.
Please feel free to share this episode with any menstruating Goddesses in your life. I wish this episode could be mandatory listening for every crazy awesome woman out there, every 12-year-old girl, every person that knows and loves women. I tell you, once I started to really understand the full wellness picture of what menstruation means, it was a total game-changer in how I looked at my awesome, amazing self - just like you should, too ;)

Over the summer, I lost my Dad. There was no warning. No real hints as to what was to come. He sent me a text the day before: "Talk to you soon, Sweetheart. Drive home safely". We were coming home from a road trip early so I could teach at a yoga festival. That was the last thing he said to me.
Unfortunately, we have all had to deal with someone we love deeply leaving us way too soon, totally out of the blue. In this episode, I share with you my journey through grief, loss, and healing as I share a few tips on what helped bring me solace during this time.
To all of you going through a season of loss, this episode is for you. And if you know of anyone going through a painful time that could benefit from this episode, please do feel free to send it their way.

Grief and loss impact us all, whether we have lost a close family member, friend, colleague or dearly loved pet. Our journeys through life criss-cross death so many times, that it can become difficult to determine who we are grieving for, what loss we are trying to come to terms with at any given moment.
In today's episode, former attorney, Kundalini yoga teacher and transformational life coach Kenlyn Kolleen and I discuss how we deal with death, dying and what lies ahead.

As a mixed martial artist, fighting was nothing new to Derek Pang. Competition, being physically at his peak, and always being ready for whatever was thrown at him, was just part of an elite athlete's life. But when a series of concussions followed by a traumatic brain injury left Derek in a coma almost 10 years ago, his fight took a fateful turn that changed everything.
In this episode, Derek and I talk about dealing with traumatic events, what we can learn from them, how he rose above the scars his assailants left, how forgiveness was pivotal in his healing, yoga's role in this path back, and where he is right now with his new program, The Hero Project working with children in schools.

We all want healthy, glowing skin and now just now, but for every day of our lives, what were do we turn? $200 bottles of under-eye cream? Expensive medical procedures? There is something WAY better and infinitely cheaper.
In this episode, I go into my top 7 skincare must-have products I use every day (spoiler alert: you probably have them all in your kitchen right now), and my 7-step daily routine to having glowing skin. I also go into why our skin health matters, what it is trying to tell us when we are having skin issues, and looking into the mechanics of pores and how they work.

Are you getting your needs met? It is okay if the answer is "no" (It just means you are human and a work-in-progress like all the rest of us). But let's work on this together today with a little trick I call the Teacup Model. In today's episode, you and I will work together to determine what each of our daily needs are (each one of those needs we will be visualizing as a teacup sitting in front of us). Once we put names to each of those cups, I'll go into what happens when those cups don't get filled, how to get back on track, and what are the 3 big categories that they fall into.

Depression. Feeling that things are just not right, not clicking. Being in a dark season where you question everything: what you are doing, who you are, what next. Have you ever been there to that place? Are you there now? This past winter was hard for me. I fell from the normal healthy place I mentally and physically reside in and I went there: being lost, not knowing which way was up, doubting myself.
In this episode, I take an honest look at how I got there, what I learned, and what I am doing now to take those valuable lessons with me to my next season of life.

Brown eyes, a medium build, a greater likelihood you might one day have a heart attack. Is that all your DNA is telling you? Just physical things? Well, it turns out that is just the tiny, little handful of snow that sits atop a grand iceberg that is you. You are an amazingly elaborate story that goes back generation upon generation, and that entire epic novel is written, word-for-word, stamped forever into your DNA. And now, we can prove it!
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Kulvinder Kaur at her Southern California home as we discuss what we are now learning from our DNA and how it is a total game-changer for our wellness, our story, our future. Dr. Kaur is an Oxford-trained scientist, CEO of Kreomics Precision Wellness, and a trailblazer in the genetics world.

How perfect that for this, our 25th episode, I spoke with Tom Kelly, who spent 25 years as a Buddhist monk?
So after being silent for that long, what words of wisdom did Tom share with us? What was it like being a monk? What did a normal day look like? What is life after the monastery like? How do yoga, meditation, music and LOVE play a role in all of this?
Listen in to this very special episode, as I sat down with Tom in his lovely Encinitas, California home with his wife, Trisha, and puppy Hope.

Have you ever wondered about what your aura really is? Is it really a thing? What can you learn from it and how can you improve your auric field? What do the colours in your aura mean? And energy work . . . what is what all about?
In this episode, I sit down with Trisha Kelly from California's Spiritual Arts Institute, as we discuss her over 40 years background in meditation, yoga and light work. After we answer all of your questions in this area, Trisha walks us through a special light meditation.
Here are a couple of the links that Trisha and I chatted about:

We get lost, each and every one of us. Something happened. Maybe many things happened and at some point, we pick ourselves back up and start the walk back home. In this episode, I was truly honoured to spend time with one of the most beautiful yoga souls, Kevin Naidoo.
We discussed his amazing path to yoga, which was paved with the stones of addiction, lack of self-love and nearly going blind just 2 years ago. Here, Kevin will take you through the streets of London, the beaches of the Caribbean, the yoga-culture in Vancouver, and then finally to where Dear Kevin is today, Home!

Have you ever wondered what some famous people were thinking? Where did their genesis come from? How did their physical and emotional state of mind colour what they left us?
In this episode, I look at two famous men from recent history: Dr. Seuss and Kurt Cobain. Although seemingly worlds apart, Dr. Seuss and Kurt Cobain's lives had some similar threads.
We look at what Dr. Seuss was thinking when writing The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, as it is a important reminder to us all of how art can heal, how from each of our individual sorrows can come greatness and joy, and how sometimes we all write stories not necessary for others, but things that we need to hear.
With Kurt, I examined his mind-body type. From a young age, he complained of having intense stomach issues, which is very common for Vata/Vata mind-body types like he was. We look at what can be done to help amazing souls like Kurt today and how to best understand this beautiful, gifted mind-body type.
By looking at the wellness journeys of others, we can maybe see things on our own path that can now make sense, be understood.
I so value each and every comment you take the time to leave me here. I am always looking for new show ideas and questions from you, so do contact me here, on my website at www.marlabarr.com, or on Instagram at @marla.barr.

Are we failing our men? As a society, we are doing something profoundly wrong when it comes to our sons, our brothers, our partners. Let's dive into what is going on, how it impacts us all, and then let's discuss the 4 things we can all start today to help.
At the end of this episode, I did something fun. I took my mind-body type analysis and looked at one of the greatest men of all time (no hints other than he rocked the craziest man-do ever). We look at what we can learn from this amazing gentleman and how you are more like him than you know.
I thank you, thank you, thank you all for the AMAZING reviews and comments you leave on these episodes! I can't tell you how much it means to read each and every one of your submissions each week. Keep them coming! And THANK YOU!!!!!

"FINALLY!" is what your tastebuds, your digestive systems, and pretty much every other square inch of you is saying as the latest food trend is proving to not be a trend at all, but here to stay.
In this episode, I sat down with Giorgo Mantas and Rob Bohay, the visionaries behind Verde Juice Bar in Winnipeg, Canada, as we talked, well, food! How the hottest wellness movement of opening a plant-based restaurant became their reality, why organic is a no-brainer for them, how partnering with local farmers is changing the landscape of the foodservice industry, and how their clientele is not exactly who you think they might be. And then - after discussing their mouth-watering menu offerings - we did some tumeric shots together! Yum is right! Bottoms up!

Do you know why you cry? What role does it play in your health? It is fascinating that we are the only species that is capable of emotional tears, as opposed to the other two types of tears that we all have (hydration tears - just keep our eyes moist, and protective tears - like what happens when you cut into an onion, or when people get pepper-sprayed, or a big dust of wind blows in your eyes). In this episode we go into:

What is one of the major addictions we all face that no one talks about? Sugar! What does a sugar addiction look like? How can I tell if I have one? What are the physical and mental effects of sugar addiction? And what can I do to deal with this addiction?
In this week's episode, I sit down with the one and only Christy Carreno (or Sugar-Free Christy), visionary, founder and Chief Sugar Buster at Project Sugar-Free. We talk about sweets, how she fell into this, how sugar addiction impacted her life and how she is now healing thousands of people around the globe kick their habit for good.

Hi There. In today's episode, I tell you the other half of the story. In episode 8 we discussed your body type and what each type means to you. Today, we look at your mind type: is it the same as your body type, or is iot totally different.
We discuss what most impacts your mind type, how to realize when you are starting to mentally unravel (we all do it, so it is totally cool), and how to bring yourself back to your center. We will also chat about how your mind and body type marry, how they work together and dance through life as one, while sometimes being at odds with each other. Let's take a listen together.

Are there numbers that make you crumble? Make you want to run and hide? For a lot of us numbers like our age, our weight, even our income is important. We form emotional attachments to what those little digits mean. But should we?
In today's episode, you and I look at the power some numbers have over us, why it happens, what those numbers really are trying to tell us, and then, we take the power back. You will never look at your scale the same again. And then at the end, I have a special treat for you. I am not going to ruin the surprise, but you will be totally blissed out by the end of this 29 minutes episode. Promise!
Wishing you love and light as always - Marla

Now that we are in October, we see signs of Breast Cancer Awareness everywhere: Race for the Cure runs taking place every weekend, pink ribbons at every turn, and friends asking friends for donations to support breast cancer research. But you never see or hear people talking about the #1 reason women get breast cancer, and I am guessing it is because most industries don't want you to know about this.
In this week's episode, I sit down with the uber-talented, world-renowned Amelia Barnes, visionary and founder of PranaVida Style. We talk about breasts, breast health and what the garment industry doesn't want you to know. Then, with you, we solve the biggest problem together. Listen in on our most important episode to date, and PLEASE, Amelia and I encourage you to share this with every bosom buddy you know. Knowledge is power! And we don't want one more woman diagnosed with breast cancer, not one!

When you start on a new journey, a new adventure, you tend to have a lot of great questions. Where do I go? How long with this take? Are we there yet? Same thing goes for us all when we are on our wellness journey.
In this episode I share some of my favorite (and funny) questions I get. Some heart-warming stories from our past wellness detoxers and we tackle my number 1 BIG question: What will this do for me now? Let's listen in.

Hi Dear Friends. This has been a tough week. Everywhere I seem to turn, we all seem a bit off, a bit shook. There is a reason for it, and it is what is happening right now. I hope this bonus episode sheds light on this time of year when all of us in the northern hemisphere close our spring/summer chapter and start to open our fall/winter one.
This can be a very taxing, emotional time of year for almost all of us regardless if we say something or not, regardless if we cry or not, regardless if we feel added anxiety, depression, hollowness or now. Let’s work through this together in this special bonus episode.
Wishing all so much love and light right now - Marla

Do you feel like you are swimming upstream? Do you feel like the world or the cosmos is against you sometimes? No matter how hard you try, what you eat, how often you go to the gym, things still are not quite working. But is there something that you are missing, something right underneath your nose? Cycles. If we don't fully understand how the cycles of the season, of the sun and moon, impact our day-to-day wellbeing, it can feel like you are swimming upstream.
Today we sit down with Chiara Stella, one of the more profound authorities on our wellness cycles, as we discuss the natural cycles around us and how these impact you today.

The Freshman 15. Those last pesky 10-15 pounds. Why do they stick around no matter how many times you go to the gym or what diet you're on? I hear it all the time from my clients when I ask what their goals are “I’d like to lose maybe 10-15 pounds”.
In this episode, you and I will explore those elusive last pounds and why they are not going anywhere, that is until today. Let find out why they are there and how you can get rid of them permanently starting today.

Are you motivated? Really motivated? Do you wake up every day and think "Wow! This is going to be the most amazing day ever"? You see it all the time: there are motivational posters, motivational quotes, T-shirts, and even coffee mugs. But does that really help anyone?
In today's episode, we will chat about motivation, how it might be overrated, and how there is something even better and honestly easier to attain than motivation. I'll give you my 5 step-by-step tips for mastering this better-than-motivation thing. Then we will chat about the importance of remembering and forgetting or letting go in your wellness journey and how to do it. I even bring in a couple of fun yoga poses to help with this. So what makes you special? What makes you unique? What makes you different from everyone else out there? Maybe you have a little bit of an idea, and maybe you see some similarities between you and others out there, but for the most part, we really don’t understand our bodies, our minds, and what they are trying to tell us. That is until today!
In this episode, you and I will dive into which of the three body types you fall into (think of them as the vehicle you were given to get you through this lifetime). Once we uncover your wellness body type, we will move on to your wellness mind type (spoiler alert: they can be totally different). We will learn how your wellness body and mind type dance in this lifetime together, what stresses them, and what you can do to provide a nurturing environment to support both your amazing body and mind.
As a BONUS, I have included a chat about self-doubt, or that little voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough. I will explain the purpose of that voice (yep, it actually does have a purpose), and teach you how to silence it permanently.

In this episode, I answer "What should we eat?", "What should we look like?", and "Why are we obsessed with the hour-glass figure?". Don't you think it is crazy that humans have been on this planet for over 6 million years, but we are the ONLY species that still ask ourselves these questions every single day? I certainly did. So I took my background in food science and my decade of work with our wild cousins (chimpanzees and orangutans) and dove headfirst into these answers. Let's explore these together today in this episode.

We also chat about seasonal funks, and how it impacts each of us differently and what to watch out for during these warm months in ourselves and those around us. Let’s get started on this episode of Your Wellness Journey.

"You have a bacterial infection!" How many times have you heard this from your doctor in your lifetime – once, twice, more times than you can count? Antibiotics have become part of our normal health regime, just another bottle that comfortably resides in our medicine cabinets. What do you think about that? Let’s see what the facts are, check-in with the World Health Organization on this, and wade through this important, controversial topic together. I will also give you my 5 easy things you can do before going into your wellness battles (especially with cold and flu season not too far away).

My name is Marla Barr, and this is a story about wellness! When I was young, I saw many of the people I loved die far too soon from diseases we now know are preventable. I didn’t like my DNA. Sure, I’ll take the blue eyes, the feisty nature, and the fondness for math. But cancer, heart disease, weight issues, gout, and food allergies? No thanks!
I wasn’t born an athlete or a genetically healthy body shape, so I put my time and energy into figuring it out. The logical thing to do: become a doctor. But that simply going to be managing sickness, not preventing it. So, I got a degree in food science, but I needed more: Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Tai Chi, Yoga, Reflexology, Reiki, and then back to medicine and a fellowship in Healthy Aging from Stanford School of Medicine.
Then came a 12-year detour to work with amazing wild animals. You can learn so much about eating from watching a giraffe and gorilla chew their food, and how important it is to breathe and meditate from an elephant named Kamala. Add all that up, and you get my new show called Your Wellness Journey. In these episodes, you can be a part of a monthly 7-Day Wellness Detox, and be part of the discussion that can lead you down the road to eating well and being well. There are no outlandish fad diets on this show, just Your Wellness Journey.
