Kristi Lane Sinclair (Haida/Cree), raised in British Columbia, currently living along the Campbell River in Vancouver is a classically trained rocker. With 5 albums already under her belt, she’s made waves in the Indigenous Music Scene, particularly with her previous release, The Ability to Judge Distance. Born out of pain, her latest offering, Super Blood Wolf Moon, embodies the true spirit of Rock and Roll.. “Anger and love are the main driving forces at the heart of the album” and it “reflects the harrowing experiences women suffer at the hands of domestic abusers.” Recorded at Jukasa Studios in Ohsweken with Juno nominated singer/songwriter Terra Lightfoot producing, Kristi expertly balances thoughtful lyrics with catchy hooks and beats in a way that’ll keep you captivated from start to finish. Julian Taylor (Mohawk, West Indies) has been at it a long time. He learned some hard Industry lessons with his band Staggered Crossing, regrouped with the excellent and funky Julian Taylor Band and is now wowing listeners with his folk stylings on his most recent releases. His 2020 album, The Ridge, was nominated for two Junos and most recently won a Native American Music Award in the Best Country Video Recording category at the event held November 21 at the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino. Joy Harjo, the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States, is a member of the Mvskoke Nation and belongs to Oce Vpofv (Hickory Ground). She is only the second poet to be appointed a third term as U.S. Poet Laureate.

In addition to serving as a three-term U.S. Poet Laureate, Harjo is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, holds a Tulsa Artist Fellowship, directs For Girls Becoming, an arts mentorship program for young Mvskoke women, and is a founding board member and Chair of the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation. She has recently been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Philosophical Society, the National Native American Hall of Fame, and the National Woman’s Hall of Fame. Harjo is the author of 13 books of poetry, two children’s books and countless awards.

Harjo performs with her saxophone and flutes, solo and with her band, the Arrow Dynamics Band, and previously with Joy Harjo and Poetic Justice. Harjo has produced seven award-winning music albums including Winding Through the Milky Way, for which she was awarded a NAMMY for Best Female Artist of the year, and today she joins me to discuss her latest album, I Pray for My Enemies. The Native American Music Awards are back and ready to celebrate and honor their most powerful voices on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls, New York. This will be the organization’s 20th Awards event following the Covid-19 pandemic's devastating impact on Indigenous communities across America. Commemorating National Native American Heritage month, the host of the 20th Awards ceremony will be actor Robert Mesa (Navajo/ Soboba) who most recently played the character James Chee, the first Indigenous doctor onGrey's Anatomy.

The Awards will proudly recognize and honor Oren Lyons as a Living Legend. Oren, who is 92, is the Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan, Onondaga Nation. He is an artist, speaker, author and environmental activist for Indigenous peoples worldwide and holds the title of Wisdom Keeper. He has advocated at the United Nations to recognize Indigenous rights and has addressed the United Nations General Assembly. He is also an All-American Lacrosse Hall of Famer and Honorary Chairman of the Haudenosaunee Nationals Lacrosse program.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductee is Micki Free, a Grammy Award winner & multiple Native American Music Award winner of Comanche and Cherokee descent. Originally discovered and managed by Gene Simmons of KISS, Micki was the guitarist in the R&B sensation, Shalamar who boasted mega platinum hit songs like "Dancing In The Sheets" from the movie soundtrack "Footloose", and won a Grammy for "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills" from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Micki is currently on tour supporting his latest album, Turquoise Blue, which features members of The Santana Band, Steve Stevens of Billy Idol and Gary Clark Jr.

Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are: Paul LaRoche of Brule/AIRO and Robert Tree Cody. Paul LaRoche is the founding member of Brulé, the epic Native American rock show. Brule’ has won eight Native American Music awards, released 20 CDs and sold over one million CDs worldwide. Robert Tree Cody is a five-time Native American Music Award winner, and a multi-talented flutist, singer, dancer, actor and educator. He has released13 albumsandis the son of Bertha Parker Pallan Cody (Seneca/Abenaki), who is largely considered to be the first female Indigenous archaeologist.

David Adrian Nunez Brenes, Cherokee and Purhepecha, grew up in various places throughout Southern California. Because of his family’s frequent moves he found it difficult to make friends, and so like many others, he turned to music. Since recording as The Tewa (Cherokee for flying squirrel), he’s become a staple in the underground music scene, both in So Cal and Albuquerque, NM. He frequently collaborates with Mato Wayuhi (music director) on Reservation Dogs and they’re currently gearing up to score an upcoming Major Motion Picture release. D.A. joins me this week to discuss all of this and his latest album, Under the Moonlight. Enjoy!

As they enter a new cycle, Bear Witness (Ehren Thomas, Cayuga) and Tim “2oolman” Hill (Mohawk) of A Tribe Called Red have reintroduced themselves as The Halluci Nation, to reflect the evolution of their music and mission. The Halluci Nation, takes its name from a phrase coined by John Trudell, to describe the vast global community of people who remember at their core what it means to be human. As a visionary artist and activist, Trudell recognized the connection between his accomplishments and what ATCR did intuitively through music and art. This weeks Gaënö’ artist hardly needs any introduction. ShoShona Kish (Anishinaabe) and Raven Kanatakta (Mohawk, Anishinaabe) have been performing as Digging Roots for nearly 20 years. Their debut album, Seeds, was nominated for an Aboriginal Artist of the Year Award at the 2007 Juno Awards. In 2010 they brought that award home for their album, We Are. Over the years they've collaborated and shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the business and they continue to use their voices to not only highlight some of the biggest injustices Indigenous peoples continue to face but more importantly, they make music to help in the healing of deep generational wounds. This week we discuss their latest album, Zhawenim (Loving Unconditionally). The album is described as “a collection of songs that reflect on both their personal relationship with nature and our collective duty to preserve it.” Enjoy!

Her debut, self titled EP was nominated this year for a Juno in the Contemporary Artist of the Year category. Brothers Cody and Caleb Blackbird, (Eastern Band Cherokee, Dakota, Roma) have been making waves in the Native American music scene together since 2014. As a band, they’ve won 5 Native American Music Awards and have shared the stage with everyone from John Trudell and Buffy Sainte Marie to Jewell and Jason Mraz. Among their more recent accolades, in 2021, they released a single with Sage Cornelius and Portugal. The Man (Backup) and Cody also recently became the first Native American Flute player to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine. After meeting John Popper (Blues Traveler) following a show on Sunday (July 24), Popper gave the ultimate compliment by stating “Someone told me he was the ‘me’ of the native flute..but I may just be the ‘him’ of the harp…” Sounds like a collaboration in the making! Julia Keefe, Nez Perce, is a nationally acclaimed jazz vocalist, actor, activist and educator currently based in New York City. Among her many accolades, she earned her master’s in music from the Manhattan School of Music in 2019. She’s opened for the likes of (Multi Grammy winners) Tony Bennett and Esperanza Spalding. Currently, she’s putting together the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band and dedicates her life to the preservation and revival of the work and legacy of the great Mildred Bailey (Salish). Micki Free’s life is the stuff of legends. As a young teenager, he saw Jimi Hendrix live and immediately knew what he wanted to do in life. Years later, after opening up for Kiss, Gene Simmons declared “you’re gonna be a star.” As a member of Shalamar he scored a Grammy with “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills Cop 1984), which led him to hanging out with Prince as described in a famous Chappelle Show skit. We talk about all this and so much more but I’ll be the first to admit… all that doesn’t even scratch the surface of Micki’s legendary life. Front and center of today’s conversation is his slamming new album, Turquoise Blue. Featuring guests like Gary Clark Jr, Cindy Blackman-Santana and Steve Stevens, Micki’s showing the world that he’s far from retiring. The Vancouver-based marvel-in-the-making is fearless in her lyricism, confronting anti-Indigenous racism and colonial violence alongside other hard subjects like anxiety, grief and heartache. She released her first album, Heartbreak on the Coast in 2019. Today we discuss her latest album, Damage Control. The album was written and recorded in 2020, a year that caused so many to endure grief and loss. For Nimkish, grief was particularly sharp, having just lost her father, to whom she credits her musical interest. Each song on Damage Control documents a coping mechanism; the album is a map for moving through pain.

Ansley Simpson, Anishinaabe, first wowed listeners in 2017 with the release of her excellent debut album, Breakwall. In the years since, she’s refined her songwriting and production skills by releasing more singles and contributing to her sister Leannes album, Theory of Ice. A new full length album, She Fell From the Sky, is slated for release in the spring of 2022 but today we’re discussing her score for the documentary, Spirit to Soar by investigative journalist, Tanya Talaga. As stated on the films website, it’s the heartbreaking “story of seven First Nations high school students who had either died or gone missing from 2000 to 2011. This documentary examines the hard truths around the deaths of the seven students, truths the northern city of Thunder Bay and the country of Canada, have long ignored: Racism kills, especially when it presents itself as indifference.” Students from the Dennis Franklin Cromarty HS in Thunder Bay are featured on the song, Mourning Keeps Coming Back.

Joanne Shenandoah, Wolf Clan, Oneida, stepped off this earth November 22, 2021, following a long illness. She takes her place among the other celestial bodies where she’ll continue her work of connecting the past to present and present to future…

After walking away from a prestigious career as a computer programmer, Joanne dedicated her life to educating people around the world about the rich traditions of the Haudenosaunee peoples through songwriting and storytelling. She blazed the trail for an entire generation of Indigenous artists and her passing signifies the end of an important chapter in the Native American music scene.

Through the decades she’s recorded various genres of music, including orchestral, folk, country, spoken word and more.. She was a multi Native American Music Award winner and counts a Grammy among her numerous accolades. The only thing more impressive than the number of celebrities she collaborated with over the years is the amount of lives she influenced for the better through her words, songs and good vibrations.

And all that barely scratches the surface of her artistic endeavors, not to mention her many humanitarian causes. Hers was a life of giving and this week on Gaënö’ we reflect on her incredible life with a special tribute. In addition to a few of Joannes timeless songs, I chat with Ellen Bello, longtime friend and Founder/CEO of the Native American Music Awards and Leah Shenandoah, daughter/collaborator/musician/fashion designer and all around BAB. Also included are clips of Joanne herself from past episodes of Gaënö’ (April 2019, May 2020 and March 2021).

Joanne Shenandoah, Wolf Clan, Oneida, stepped off this earth November 22, 2021, following a long illness. She takes her place among the other celestial bodies where she’ll continue her work of connecting the past to present and present to future…

After walking away from a prestigious career as a computer programmer, Joanne dedicated her life to educating people around the world about the rich traditions of the Haudenosaunee peoples through songwriting and storytelling. She blazed the trail for an entire generation of Indigenous artists and her passing signifies the end of an important chapter in the Native American music scene.

Through the decades she’s recorded various genres of music, including orchestral, folk, country, spoken word and more.. She was a multi Native American Music Award winner and counts a Grammy among her numerous accolades. The only thing more impressive than the number of celebrities she collaborated with over the years is the amount of lives she influenced for the better through her words, songs and good vibrations.

And all that barely scratches the surface of her artistic endeavors, not to mention her many humanitarian causes. Hers was a life of giving and this week on Gaënö’ we reflect on her incredible life with a special tribute. In addition to a few of Joannes timeless songs, I chat with Ellen Bello, longtime friend and Founder/CEO of the Native American Music Awards and Leah Shenandoah, daughter/collaborator/musician/fashion designer and all around BAB. Also included are clips of Joanne herself from past episodes of Gaënö’ (April 2019, May 2020 and March 2021).

Talon Bazille Ducheneaux, who performs unde r the name Bazille is Crow Creek and Cheyenne River Sioux in South Dakota. Not only is he a talented songwriter, producer, lyricist, rapper and author, he can also add a degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania to his already impressive resume. With Mato Wayuhi (Lakota), music spoke to him at a young age. In 4th grade, he was the kid rapping the morning announcements and lunch menu at school. Traditional culture played a huge role in his upbringing, as did the music of Green Day and Jay Z. While attending the University of Southern California, Mato released his first two albums, Part Time Indian and Scatterbrain. He also graduated with a degree in Cinema & Media Studies. 2020 was a game changing year for the young songwriter as he was chosen to score the music for the FX/ Hulu hit, Reservation Dogs. Indigenous Peoples Day Special

For this special edition of Gaënö’, I wanted to shake things up a little. In some ways, I approached this episode as the complimentary pair to my International Women’s Day special back in the spring with the amazingly talented Joanne Shenandoah. This time around, while discussing Indigenous Peoples Day, I wanted to talk with a few of the older brothers in my community. Todays featured guests are Dr Jason Corwin, Deer Clan, Seneca Nation and Dennis Bowen, Bear Clan, Seneca Nation. But in reality, this episode is dedicated to all my teachers and elders in my community. Nya:wëh, Ha’nih (Dad) Jeff Sr., Maurice John Sr, Sandy Dowdy, Jano’s Bowen, Steve Gordon, Bill Crouse, Tina Abrams, Arlene Bova, Sharon Atwood, Rick Armstrong, Norm Jimerson Sr… Really too many to name. And a special dedication to all our family and ancestors that were murdered in the name of “process”, “god”, “education” and “civilization”. Today we celebrate us! Its a good day to be Indigenous.

Dr Corwin was recently hired as Clinical Assistant Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University at Buffalo. He’s been socially active since the early 90’s and helped to establish the Seneca Media and Communications Center with the Seneca Nation. Mr Bowen helped to organize the Cleveland Chapter of the American Indian Movement in the early 1970’s. A man of many talents, he’s a former President of the Seneca Nation and national pow wow Emcee, just to name a few of his disctinctions.

To be perfect honest, I didn’t expect the conversations to go as long as they did. You even hear me state at the beginning of each that we’re aiming for a short 5-10 minute conversation. But when it came time to edit, I felt that I shouldn’t cut any of it for time constraints. I think you really need to hear it all to keep it all in context.. That does capture the essence of what this episode is all about. Keeping the big picture in mind.

There were a number of ways by which to approach this topic. I set out with the intention of helping listeners walk away with a better understanding as to why the shift away from celebrating the colonizing ideals of the “explorers” is so important to not only indigenous peoples, but people of color all over the world, and ultimately why its important to every single one of us, regardless of race. Make no mistake, as long as genocide is celebrated, the threat of future genocide ris very much alive. As does the threat to the health of our environment… Its time.

Stephen Qacung Blanchett is a Yupik artist from Alaska who’s been Indigifying the music scene with his brother Phillip, and longtime friend Ossie for nearly 3 decades as Pamyua. They’re a globally renowned, award winning band who’s sound is best described as “inuit Soul Music” or tribal funk. In early July 2021, Qacung released his first solo album called Miu. It’s an album featuring a lot of outstanding collaborations and one you can just press play on and let go.

was a Mi’k maq musician/activist who, at one time in Canada, was considered the most dangerous man with a guitar. His was a life of epic proportions. Legend has it that in the early 1970’s he turned down a recording contract with Columbia Records because they wanted him to set aside his Indian activism. Whats certain is that his refusal to do so resulted in the same kind of blacklisting that many of his contemporaries faced, including Buffy Sainte Marie. Sadly, in 2013 he passed away one week shy of his 72nd birthday but his music is now more relevant than ever. The recent discovery of 215 remains at the Kamloops Residential School in Canada sparked an international conversation about the enduring horrors of the residential boarding schools. A few weeks later, when an additional 751 children were discovered on a school’s grounds in Saskatoon, it quickly became apparent to non indigenous people what was common knowledge in Indigenous communities all along; that graveyards on “Indian School” grounds was a common sight. In the U.S., Denise Lajimodiere of the National Native American Boarding School Coalition released a non exhaustive list of 365 such schools that operated in the United States. In the wake of these findings, Deb Haaland and the Department of the Interior has announced an investigation into these schools, which has made it abundantly clear that we’ve barely begun to scratch the surface on the horrific legacy and damage these schools have caused. This weeks listening consists of songs written specifically for the children who never came home to their families.

Early this last Sunday afternoon, I got into a really deep conversation with my wife, Jade, about various topics, but most of all, dreams, and the traditions born of them. After feeling energized from our talk, it hit me that I need to shake things up a little bit this week. I was starting to feel a little too predictable with the show, so I decided to take a detour... In part, as an exercise in fluidity, but also with a sudden feeling of needing to introduce myself to my new listeners..

When my home, and first radio station announced it was shutting down operations due to economic complications of the pandemic, within days of me finding out that Gaënö' was being picked up for syndication with Native Voice One (The Native American Radio Network)..in addition to having to learn the ins and outs of my new job with my home nation, not to mention all my familial responsibilities, With Gaënö' I quickly slipped into survival mode with a lot of conflicting feelings to sort through. In essence, I just kept the ball rolling like I had been; I think as a way to retain some sense of normalcy and routine but also so I could allow myself the time I needed to make these life changes transition as smoothly as possible.. In essence, I slipped into survival mode... A couple of short months in, I started to no longer feel that connection with the spontaneous beauty of live radio, so in an effort to regain some of that magic, my originally planned show was put on hold for a week..

After settling in with my new job as a Media specialist with the Seneca Nation, I felt compelled to break the mold a little bit and finally stretch out.. Long story short, I started to think of the fun I could be having with Gaënö'. With my deadline just a few hours away, I decided that before anything else, I need to at least introduce myself and that brings me to our listening today. I feel awkward saying I'm my own featured artist, so I'll just say that selections from my 2016, Bones of the Ghost are helping me to introduce myself to you. Nicholas Galanin, Tlingit and Unungax, is quite possibly one of the most important artists presently on the scene. Living in Sitka, Alaska, he’s a constant force of creativity. If he’s not helping Indigenous Nations reclaim stolen lands, he’s building a canoe or cohosting a cooking show with his parter, Merritt Johnson. His mixed media work’s represented by Peter Blum Gallery in lower Manhattan. Musically, he’s recorded as Silver Jackson and Indian Agent. His newest band with longtime Collaborator Otis Calvin iii is Ya Tseen- which means ‘be alive’ in Tlingit. They released their first album, Indian Yard, April 30th and its also their debut for Sub Pop Records in Seattle. Collaborations on Indian Yard include Portugal. The Man, Qachung and Ishmael Butler of Shabaaz Palaces and Digable Planets.

Jayli Wolf’s a Cree and Anishinaabe artist currently residing in Toronto. She and her partner Hayden left the doomsday cult they belonged to and started a band called Once a Tree, releasing their first album, Phoenix, in 2017. The bands still going strong, with plans to release a new EP soon but the focus of our conversation is centered around Jayli’s brand new solo career. In March, she released the emotionally charged- Child of the Government and quickly followed it up with Hush. Her solo debut called Wild Whisper is due out this summer. To top it all off, she’ll be starring in the upcoming TV adaptation of the comic book series, Y: The Last Man.

Innastate- Adrian Wall (Jemez Pueblo) is one of the founders of the award winning band, Innastate, from Albuquerque New Mexico. Their album, Verde (2018), helped them win the Best Debut Group at the 19th annual Native American Music Awards. With the pandemic happening shortly thereafter, the band switched gears from life on the road to working on new material (Albeit from the comfort of their own homes).. They kicked off 2021 with a new single in January, and another in February. We’ll listen to both Seeds and Light (ft Artson) plus one from Verde and one from Adrians previous band Red Earth. LEANNE BETASAMOSAKE SIMPSON of the Michii Saagiig Nishnaabeg, is an acclaimed scholar, author and musician. Her books challenge long standing literary conventions, as she brilliantly draws from ancient Anishnaabe oral storytelling traditions in ways that reimagines what a novel is and can be.. Among her latest books is Noopiming, a story that centers around a mythical being trapped in ice, who relies on 7 beings on the outside, each of whom make up a different faculty of the creatures body.. PJ Vegas (Yaqui) is the son of Redbone co-founder Pat Vegas. In addition to being a member of his fathers groundbreaking band, he's also collaborated with the likes of the Battiest Brothers and Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas. Their collaboration on the politically charged, Stand Up/Stand N Rock won them an MTV Video Music Award in the Best Video With a Message category. His star continues to rise as he's proven himself to be a multitalented singer/songwriter and with the recent release of the Native State of Mind sample pack on Splice, he's helping to break new ground in the goal of integrating Indigenous music into the mainstream.

The Silver Wolf Band features members of the Inu, Inuk and Mi'kmaq Nations. The band calls Labrador Canada home, and their music is born of the landscape that surrounds them.

I was fortunate to catch up with the principle songwriter and frontman for the band, Jamie Jackman. We talked about the bands connection to the land of the far north and the songs on their latest album, Storms and Prayers. You're invited to take a musical journey to a place where forests remain unchanged by man, the northern lights fill your mind with wonder and awe, and the milky way continues to reminds us of our place in the cosmos.
