Smoke Radio

Westminster's Student Sound. The University of Westminster's multi-award-winning student radio station. 📻

View Details

The University of Westminster is one of the most diverse student communities in the UK, and we’ve made it our mission at Smoke Radio to reflect that. This year’s been exceptional for the station; with a fresh vision, new vibrant brand on and off air, and more varied events than ever before. We believe Smoke Radio has really reached a new level this year as Westminster’s Student Sound.

The main goals we set out to achieve in redeveloping Smoke Radio included:

  • Making the station more vibrant, upbeat and student-focused.
  • Launching new events to reach more students from multiple campuses.
  • Creating a greater presence across the university and the capital.
  • Improving online and social media platforms to make our content more student-based.
  • To provide industry-standard training to members.
  • To maintain and develop the technical side of the station.

The membership this year has reached an all-time high. We welcomed over 150 new members to the station who created and produced more than 90 different shows. We wanted Smoke to reflect our diverse student body, and we were proud to welcome a wide array of programmes including grime, K-pop, musicals, upcoming artists and special speech shows.

We held new events to create a larger presence around the university and capital, including live gigs, comedy nights, student parties, talks, and OBs. We managed to pull this all off despite a large decrease in our usual funding from the students’ union and university, which meant that fundraising was vital to maintain the running and high standards of the station.

Our members are made up of students from a variety of courses. The team have become a real family this year, dedicated to improving and growing the station, and welcoming and training new members.

Who would have guessed it? Joe Allen becomes Liverpool hero after his penalty wins the match against Stoke.

The reds went into the 2nd leg at Anfield just needing to draw after their 1-0 away win in the 1st leg. But it was the boys in the Stoke City shirts which took the game to Liverpool during the first half. The potters dominance of the match and possession earned them some luck after the linesman failed to raise his flag after Stokes number 10 Marko Arnautović scored right on the stroke of H/T

LFC grew into the match during the second half but it stayed 1-1 on aggregate all the way to penalties.

@alexmearns7 reviews the match and gives his opinion that this victory may cover over the cracks, that the reds manager Jurgen Klopp has not made a very good start to his time at Anfield.

Leeds United managed to grab a point away at Griffin Park thanks to a fantastic curling shot from Middlesbrough loanee, Carayol. Leeds went into half time trailing due to some awful defending from the Yorkshire side. Leeds looked the better side in the second half and could of had a penalty to grab the win and 3 points, but it finished 1-1.

@alexmearns7 reviews the match and discusses whether Leeds Boss Steve Evans should be starting with 2 strikers up top and ponders if the former Rotherham manager has improved Leeds United since taking over from Uwe Rosler earlier in the season.

Spurs have finally found someone who'll take Andros Townsend off their hands and wage bill. Newcastle United have made their second 12 MILLION POUND January signing after Andros Townsend joins Jonjo Shelvey who recently signed from Swansea last week.

Once again Arsenal slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to their London rivals Chelsea. Diego Costa was the hero for the blues, the fiery striker snatched the winning goal and was also in the heart of the action when the gunners German centre back, Per Mertasacker was shown a red card early in the first half.

During this Football Hour -Extra Time podcast @alexmearns7 rips into Arsenals performance and 3 players in particular. Firstly the captain for the match Theo Walcott, who does not seem quick anymore. Secondly, the BFG(Big Friendly German) Mertasacker who runs so slow it is like he's pulling Leeds United manager Steve Evans on his back. Third and finally Mathieu Flamini the defensive midfielder who forgets to defend.

Culture Shock (no not the 80s punk band) released ‘City Lights’ a week ago - an up-tempo electro pop taste of his debut album dropping in May. A couple years ago it was indie music that got everyone up and dancing for the summertime, but now that EDM and drum and bass are taking the reins I wouldn’t be surprised if when everyone is trying to catch a tidal wave, ‘City Lights’ will be cruising the radio waves. It definitely fits the criteria for an early summer hit— repetition of a word or phrase (“free-falling”, in this case), classic but catchy DnB beat, infectious chorus, relatively satisfying beat-drop— but for now we will just have to wait and see how it springs.

‘City Lights’ is out now, and there’s also a great instrumental version making its way ‘round the interwebs.

On Thursday the 13th of November four societies from the University of Westminster hijacked the Smoke Radio airwaves for a truly unique evening of radio.

The SSA Harrow, LGBTI, Business and Debating societies let us know what they are all about and handed out some great tips and advice along the way.

From student services on campus to debates on youth voting, there was something for everyone. The great variety showcasing just how diverse the societies at Westminster are and showing just how many opportunities there are for students.

The common message throughout was for students to ‘Get Involved’, improve your job prospects, enrich your university experience and have a whole load of fun along the way.
