We also discuss what keeps us moving in the direction of challenge- even little things like standing in line or sitting in traffic and how they can become a daily practice of increasing our capacity to be in the inevitable discomfort and difficulty.

We all have “shoulds” in our lives. Maybe we should work somewhere else, separate ourselves from a relationship, or feel this way about someone. Maybe we should make more focused goals, travel more, or slow down.

When we dwell on what we should be doing, rather than what we are actually doing, our consciousness gives personal negative feedback. Being hard on yourself means you are judging the person you have become.

‘Shoulds’ and perfectionism go hand in hand. Comparing your situation to a different one will be the root of evil. Let your ‘shoulds’ inspire you rather than tear you down!

We hope you enjoy it!

In this episode, we talk with our dearest teacher B. Naga Kumar of Mysore, India about Ayurveda. Kumar shares with us his own story about growing up in India and studying Ayurveda under his grandfather, who he mentored with in the younger years of his life.

Kumar’s background focuses on the non-physical, energetic part of humans. In the second half of the interview, Kumar talks about the 5 elements in Ayurveda: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

Since we ran short on time, we decided to do a part two with Kumar that will air in October. In that episode, we will focus more on defining and understanding the doshas.

This week’s podcast is special! We are together and have a video podcast for you. We are talking about working with our inner child’s needs. Our upbringing greatly impacts our subconscious because as children, we are all at the most vulnerable place in our lives - constantly being shaped and edged.

Inner child work - the idea that all of the ages of our childhood are still in us and any of the needs that were unmet in those ages, still live within us. The intention with inner child work is to go back to those stages of life and see where healing is required to nurture and fill that void. Courtney goes into her own recent inner child work around feeling abandoned as a child.

It is important to be able to recognize what we lacked during our early childhood stages. Whether we know it or not, this shapes us into the people we currently are. Noticing how you react to different people and situations highlights the way you grew up. We hope you learn something new about yourself this week and are able to meditate on your inner child!

Remember the last disagreement you had. Maybe it was with a family member, co-worker, neighbor, or companion. How did you feel? What words did you use? How long did it affect you?

This week, we discuss how to approach conflict. Our world is filled with conflict! There is nothing more frustrating and disheartening than being in conflict with someone. This impacts the way we see the world, other people, and even ourselves.

It is our second nature to always try to be right, but there can be negative consequences when we handle disagreements in a poor way. Conflict is inevitable, but having the right mindset and tools to overcome it will be a game-changer!

This week’s episode is all about how our nervous system impacts our well-being! How being surrounded by people will affect us, even when we do not see it. Absorbing other people’s energies makes us susceptible to change personally.

Self-protection is done subtly and takes work. We all know people who make us feel charged or worn out. At home, work, or in public, protecting your energy will impact your character. Being conscious of our nervous system and the situations we are put in each day will help us understand how to protect our energy.

We challenge you to notice how you feel after you leave group settings or even personal time. We feed from other people and this energy can either be positive or negative.

This week, we discuss the difference between being alone and lonely. These are two very different emotions and situations we all go through. Seasons of life, people, jobs, even the weather can all cause people to feel lonely.

It can be hard to find a good balance of being involved in your community while also taking restful periods of reflection. Knowing the difference between being alone and lonely can change the trajectory of what rest looks like in your life.

This past year has been unique from others in the sense that everyone has had to isolate themselves in different ways. We felt this topic important to touch on and notice the impact loneliness can have on a person’s life. We hope you find some encouragement from this podcast!

Do you know your worth? Often, when we are not confident in our own characteristics, we look to other people or other things to make us feel worthy. The opposite side of this is having enough self-trust and self-respect to allow ourselves to be unique and authentic.

As females especially, it is easy to automatically assume we are not worthy...THIS IS NOT TRUE LADIES! Really knowing ourselves is the most important tool because the world is constantly telling us how we should act and what we should look like.

Challenge yourself this week to meditate on where you find your self-worth. Recognizing this is the first step to coming back to your true self. Be confident in who you are and what you can accomplish! Do not lose hope in yourself, you are wonderful! :)

We mention two previous episodes this week - Ep4 | Shadow Work and Ep34 | Connecting with Intuition. Be sure and listen to them if you have not yet!!

What is intuition? People often say, “trust your intuition!” But do we really know what it means or how we can best use it in our lives? This week, we talk about how our minds use our intuition to give us messages. Knowing how to respond to these messages can help us when we decide which paths in life to follow.

Trusting our intuition can be extremely difficult because what our minds tell us is not always the clearest. We all experience different ‘red flags’ or cautions in our life that cause our intuition to react. Reading these and responding in a healthy way can alleviate stress, pain, and situations we would never wish to experience!

We hope you find this episode interesting and inspiring. Strengthening how we deal with our intuition is a lesson worth practicing! Understanding and trusting our intuitions will help us make the choices we want in our lives.

Letting go - the ‘easier said than done’ part of life! This week, we discuss what letting go looks like and why it is important. Determining our attachment or non-attachment to specific events or emotions is the first step to being able to let go.

One of the big topics we talk about is the feeling of disappointment each of us experiences. Maybe someone or some event let you down. Possibly expectations were not met. Letting disappointment rule our emotions is not a way any of us want to live!

Letting go can sometimes have a negative connotation attached to it. BUT, it can be very helpful and crucial to our character! It can allow us to grow, heal, be bold, and strong. We hope this week is encouraging and insightful.

This week we are joined by Irene Lyon.

She’s a nervous system expert and somatic practitioner and her educational videos take complex topics such as trauma and the nervous system by breaking them down into digestible information without losing the science.

In this episode, we talk about what makes up trauma in the body and how to work with our nervous system. We ask Irene to define ‘what is a traumatic event’ and it may not be what you think!

Additionally, we go over how the more we heal, the bigger stuff comes up to be released.Irene has been a teacher to us and we now consider her a friend.

This week, we discuss the boundaries we set with our personal selves! It is crucial to set boundaries in the areas that influence our well-being to make sure we are treating ourselves with love and care. Areas like work, family, and relationships. If we don’t set boundaries, we will experience consequences and be affected for a longer period of time.

When people normally think about setting limits or saying no, they might initially associate the meaning with a negative connotation. However, setting healthy boundaries can lead to enjoying our work and relationships much more!

Trusting your self-intuition is the very first step to being able to successfully set boundaries. This will take practice - as does everything good and healthy! We hope this podcast challenges you to think about the boundaries you need to set in your life.

We mentioned last week’s episode about Burnout. If you missed this, here is the link: https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/19491575
We also talked about the Chakra system. If you missed this episode, here is the link: https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/17938835

Burnout - something most people can relate to! The never ending deadlines… meetings… lists… things to accomplish and experience… All of these are good things, but when these areas in our lives become overwhelming and daunting is when burnout begins to have its effect.

Some of these burnouts can be driven by what we view success as. Maybe it is accomplishing what is on our to-do list by the end of the day. Maybe it is being promoted by the end of the year. The key to preventing a potential burnout is to know what is driving you to constantly work or perform!

Isn't it crazy that when you take time for yourself - to rejuvenate, meditate, process - you have more energy and creativity?! The world is not on its path to slowing down so we MUST learn the signs our bodies give us to be able to avoid this burnout. We hope this podcast inspires you to focus on the crazy areas of your life and see where you can take time for yourself!

This week we are joined by Justine Myers of Finding Radiant Health. Justine’s health journey began when she was a teenager plagued with acne. After years of antibiotics, birth control, and topical creams, she started experimenting with diet and noticed considerable improvements in both her skin and overall health.

However, when she entered grad school she became sick and started working with a functional medicine doctor. She eventually learned (and confirmed through lab testing) that she had heavy metal toxicity, likely from immunizations, years of household products, and the chemicals we are all exposed to day in and day out. She started to take her health into her own hands and became obsessive about healing.

Today she has her business Finding Radiant Health, where she works as a health coach, a health advocate, and educator around healthy living and self-healing.

Justine’s message directly aligns with the Points of Illumination message: we are our own best healers, our bodies are wise and full of messages, and coming back to the body and learning to trust it is the road to healing!

In this episode we talk about:

  • Justine’s story of sickness and healing
  • Sickness and Identity
  • How the body speaks to us through pain
  • Heavy metal toxicity and chelation
  • How Justine works with her clients

The theme of this mini-series is healing from trauma and relationships. In this episode, Laura shares her story about healing her root chakra and how everything happens for a specific reason. She shares a recent experience that caused her to be fearful and unsafe, one that brought up past wounds and fears.

We all carry around so many burdens wherever we go - stress, anxiety, fear, shame, guilt, and more. Most of these feelings are hard to accept and deal with, but coming face-to-face with them is when healing starts. Healing begins the moment we are open, desperate, tired, and vulnerable. When we cannot find the energy to continue.

The healing process is not linear and takes time, effort, and heart! We hope this episode and mini-series have encouraged you to find healing in your trauma, experiences, and relationships.

Laura mentions the episode about the Chakra Theory, which is linked below!https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/17938835

Everyone on this Earth faces experiences that cause pain, trauma, and wounds. These shape and edge us to make us unique from one another. Have you ever tried to heal and grow from these hurts? This is the very reason we created Points of Illumination! To spur on self-healing practices for you and for us.

Self-healing is a process in which we will never reach a final destination. This is not to discourage us, but to push us to continuously strive to be better and more evolved from prior trauma or pains.

This week, we begin a series talking about some personal stories where we have dealt with traumatic situations and begun healing. This episode is part one of three parts. Make sure to tune in next week for part 2!

We talk about different wellness tools we have used over the years, mindset, and the final question to each of us was: What is love?

Scott is authentic, funny, and a dear friend of ours. We hope you enjoy this dynamic episode.

Have you ever experienced a friendship that no longer exists? Maybe you grew apart because you walked through different stages in life, or experienced different situations than each other. Talking, or even thinking, about this can be uncomfortable and not natural. As we grow and heal, relationships may die off or fade away.

In this week’s episode, we talk about personal, real-life relationships we have experienced and how losing these can usually attest to the fact that we are growing or healing from past wounds. We also talk about the types of friendships that withstand time. The constant ones (you know who they are)!

It is easy to fear change and growth because our relationships might change and end as we evolve. Making friendships along the way is one of the most beautiful things about life!

This week, we discuss the topic of being too much. This could look like having some shadow around being big, bold, taking up space, or being the center of attention.

Or maybe it shows up as a feeling. Like you are too much, need too much, demand too much.

If you have ever been told, directly or indirectly, to tone down your voice or impact, this episode will resonate with you.

We want to encourage you to never feel like you are too much. Real power does not come from the external, it comes from within. Authenticity is a superpower!!

This week’s topic is Holding Space! What does holding space really mean? Being able to sit with someone and remain a constant during a season of life without imposing opinions or judgment, is what we mean by holding space. Having a friend, partner, or family member let you cry, vent, or complain while supporting you through the process and letting you feel safe to be yourself.

Life gives us so many different situations which spur on different emotions - the comfortable and the uncomfortable. Holding space requires the ability to sit and feel these emotions, not trying to fix or change them. It is in moments like these where we must use wisdom and intuition to do the right thing!

We hope you enjoy this special episode and feel encouraged to practice holding space!

This week we talk with Robin from The Diary of an Empath. We discuss empaths in business, self-care for empaths, and even go into some numerology and astrology.

Years ago, when she was working as a social worker she noticed that highly sensitive people were often labeled, and at times struggled in our fast-paced society. She knew this didn’t have to be the case.

She left her work as a social worker to help empaths (aka highly sensitive people) learn to work with, protect, and excel using their empathic gifts and energy. Robin is a very special and courageous soul and we feel honored to share her illuminating story!

You can find Robin at https://www.thediaryofanempath.com/

It is safe to say the word ‘surrender’ can carry a few negative connotations with its meaning; thoughts like defeat, failure, or giving up. People often believe that surrendering is something that we need to force ourselves to do. This is false. Being able to surrender means being able to let go and allow!

How does surrendering look in your life? Are there areas of your career, relationships, or personal growth that you are always trying to control? There is an aspect of pride we all must overcome in order to successfully surrender each day. Recognizing this is the first step.

In this podcast, we talk about different areas that are difficult to fully surrender in. Experiencing the power of letting go can be very restoring in your life. Be challenged to find the areas of your life that need surrendering. We hope you enjoy!

We mentioned the movie, “Doing Time, Doing Vipassana,” which is about how a 10-minute silent meditation retreat transformed prisoner’s lives in India. Here is the link in case you wanted to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkxSyv5R1sg

Laura also wrote a blog about Vipassana which is also available for you to read: https://lifeyesbylaura.wordpress.com/2017/06/14/know-thy-self-a-vipassana-10-day-silent-meditation/

This week, we discuss the topic of intention. What does it mean by being an intentional person and how do our actions influence our outcomes? Knowing what we are aiming and planning for will greatly impact our behavior.

When you think of intention, think of the overarching umbrella that stretches over the reason you do everything you do. Sometimes we unconsciously have an intention, but being aware of that intention is very useful for adding accountability and direction in your life!

It is easy to get caught up in the routine motions of the world we live in. Being able to reflect and put intention behind our behaviors, is important to serve as a reminder of why we do what we do. When we become aware of our intention, it is like the north star of our life!

In this episode, we interview Dulce Aguilar and Jamie Clarke, the founders of The Yoga People- a yoga school based in London.

Jamie and Dulce have extensive studies in Chakra theory and have incorporated this system into their yoga teacher trainings. Their intention is to create a healing environment and allow their students to feel and heal these energy centers in their own bodies.

They walk us through each of the 7 chakras and explain how they manifest in our lives and personalities and how the chakras are connected with yoga. They use practical examples to help identify where we could have an overactive or underactive chakra, which is the first step to bring them back to balance.

Being judged and judging others is a part of life. In this episode, we talk about the reasons behind why others judge and how strong judgments of ourselves and others are often tied to a personal shadow.

We also talk about how allowing ourselves to be judged goes against our biology and why is it that judgment is a mechanism to keep us small.

We discuss how the abandonment of self can be a result of judgment and how a strong nervous system is tied into being able to take on judgment and criticism.

This episode goes into the phases of the moon and how to work with them in life and manifestation. Such as planting intentions on the new moon and releasing the past on a full moon. How shamans, farmers, men, and women have used the moon cycles for centuries.

We explain how each lunar cycle is around 29 days and starts with the new moon, and ends with the waning moon. Each cycle has a meaning and timing and when you use them in your life it can add a natural rhythm and flow like the waves of the ocean.

When we talk about the moon and the effect it has on us, we are talking about the connection to our feelings, our deep beliefs, and our yin side or feminine energy within ourselves. If the concept of feminine and masculine energy is new to you, we have an episode on this if you would like to check it out, it might help to clarify the concepts a bit more: https://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/17117705.

Courtney mentions that her favorite afternoon recharge is a 20-minute Yoga Nidra in place of a nap. We added a free guided Yoga Nidra meditation to the website. Check it out here: https://www.pointsofillumination.com/courses.

Laura and Courtney reflect on the difficult times in their lives and how they’ve navigated them. Since difficult times will always come and go, they figured it is better to be prepared for the hardships in advance and give some tools they have found effective in their lives.

In this episode we discuss:

-How a motivation for doing regular self-care is to help navigate difficult times.

-Reflections on staying aware and present during difficulties & how slowing down is hard but it often helps!

-The racing mind & anxiety during difficult times.

-Sometimes difficulties can be a breaking down of the old to move us into the new.

-Suggestions on changing perspective and looking at situations from different angles.

-How taking care of our own mental health is one of the kindest things we can do for our friends and family.

We dive deep into shadow work, we discuss what shadow is, how to discover what is lurking in our shadow, and how to work with it and integrate it. We explain why the more shadow work we do, the lighter, freer, and more authentic we feel.

We also talk about triggers and projections, what they are, and how they play into shadow work.

Steps to work with shadow:

1- Think of a rejected aspect of self.

2- Bring it to mind for a moment and then write it down in a journal.

3- In your mind imagine the worst possible scenario happening- the person who you never want to find out about this finds out. Watch this play out in your mind, watch the emotions and how your body feels as you think about this.

4- Then tell someone you trust about this shadow aspect, like a confession.

5- Start to notice little ways you can air it throughout the week.

6- Stay with discomfort as it comes up.

For the ancients of India, the way we breathe was not something that just automatically happened. They paid attention to their breathing patterns and worked to strengthen and train their breath, just like we train our mind and bodies.

When strong thoughts or emotions get control over us, it’s difficult to calm ourselves down with our thoughts, however, a beautiful tool we can use is learning to regulate or become aware of our breath. Since our mental state and the breath are linked (think of how you breathe when you’re scared or anxious and think of how you breathe when you’re relaxed) we can control the breath, and when the breath changes, the mind state changes with it.

We go over the history of controlled breathing, also known as pranayama. We talk about how it has shaped our own lives, why if you have kids you should start working on this when they’re young and we go over some actual breathwork practices.

Masculine and feminine energies - What are they? How do we work with them? Viewing life from the lens of masculine and feminine will change the way you see yourself and the world.

We all have a combination of both energies. They are sometimes referred to as yin and yang, the yin being feminine and the yang being masculine. The feminine is the soft receiving side and the masculine is the outward giving end. We explain how emotions can be masculine or feminine, exercise and even the organs of the body. Looking at our own masculine and feminine approach to life is a beneficial way to help keep balance and harmony in our day to day.
