A few snowflakes are falling as I write this update on Friday afternoon. By Saturday morning, 3-4 inches should accumulate. Temperatures will be noticeably colder on Saturday when winds will be blowing from the north 10-15 mph with high temperatures in the teens F. The sun should peak through the clouds briefly Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the 20s F for Sunday with strong winds from the west blowing 30-40 mph. A cold front will cross over the area early Monday bringing some of the coldest air yet, more snowfall (maybe 4-6 inches), and lighter winds.Looking ahead in the weather models - there are no major storms lined up, but there is also no major ridge of high pressure forecasted. At the moment, it seems the pattern will be a series of disturbances and troughs that should bring a few inches of snow here and there which can add up surprisingly fast. Fingers crossed!
This morning (Wednesday) temperatures are teens to 20s F and wind is out of the southwest and northwest at 10-20 mph with gusts of 30-45 mph. Snow showers over the last couple days dropped 3-5” of snow in the mountains. For the second half of this week daytime temperatures will reach high 20s to mid-30s F with lows in the teens and low 20s F. Today and tomorrow winds will be out of the southwest at 15-20 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph. Skies will be mostly clear until the next measurable round of snowfall arrives late Friday or Saturday, with some light snowfall in the southern part of our area tonight and tomorrow.
Mountain temperatures on Wednesday morning are in the single digits to teens F, with 10-25 mph winds blowing from the west to the north. The mountains near Bozeman received 10-15” of new snow in the last 24 hours, with 4” in Big Sky, 1” in West Yellowstone and Cooke City, and none in Island Park. Lingering flurries will end this morning, and skies will be sunny for the remainder of the week as high temperatures work their way into the mid-30s to low-40s F.
Snowfall on Thursday night brought 2-3” inches of snow to the mountains near Bozeman, 5” near Big Sky, and 7-8” near West Yellowstone, Island Park and Cooke City. Winds have been out of the south and west at 10-20 mph with 30-45 mph gusts. Temperatures are in the 20s F this morning. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the 20s and 30s F. Winds will remain moderate out of the southwest today and shift more northerly tomorrow. More snow is on the way starting this afternoon or evening. It looks to favor the Island Park area where we could see 6-10” by tomorrow morning. 2-6” will fall across the rest of the advisory area. Another pulse of snow is forecasted for Monday night.
Over the last week, the mountains have gotten a few light dustings of snow intermixed with warm and sunny weather. This trend looks to continue over the next week. Warm and sunny weather are expected this weekend before chances for snowfall return on Monday and continue through the following work week.
A winter storm blew into Southwest Montana Wednesday night (10/16) with mountain temperatures dropping into the teens to 20s F by Friday morning. Precipitation shifted to snow, blanketing the mountains with 4-6” in most areas and up to 10” in the Northern Gallatin and Southern Madison Ranges. This weekend and into early next week, mountain temperatures will peak in the 40s to 50s F under sunny skies, and winds will blow 5-15 mph from the northwest to the southwest. There is a chance for additional precipitation Monday night into Tuesday.
Since Thursday there has been a mix of snow and rain up to 8000’ with mostly snow above. Near Big Sky, Hyalite, Island Park and Cooke City received 8-15” of snow (0.9-1.9” snow water equivalent), and the Bridger Range and West Yellowstone got 2-4” (0.5-0.7” SWE). Over the weekend temperatures reached mid-30s to low 40s F during the days, and dropped to low 30s F most nights. On Saturday wind shifted to the east with gusts to 25 mph, and yesterday backed to westerly at 5-15 mph. This morning, temperatures are 20s to low 30s F, and wind is west-southwest at 5-15 mph. Temperatures will reach high 30s to mid-40s F today, and drop to teens F overnight. The next few days temperatures will reach low 30s F with overnight lows in the teens F. This afternoon wind will increase to 15-25 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph out of the west-southwest. Snow showers tonight could drop 1-3” by morning. More snow showers tomorrow evening through Thursday could drop up to a foot of snow in the mountains near Bozeman, Big Sky, and Cooke City with 1-3” near West Yellowstone and Island Park. Next weekend, wet spring weather looks to continue with temperatures warming back to 30s and 40s F.
Prior to yesterday, the mountains had not received any snow since last Thursday. This week was mostly sunny with daytime temperatures reaching 40s and 50s F the last few days, and cooler cloudy weather arrived yesterday. This morning the mountains near Big Sky, Cooke City, and Hyalite have 4-6” of new snow with 2-3” near Island Park and none elsewhere. Temperatures are high 20s to mid-30s F, and wind is out of the west-northwest at 5-10 mph. This weekend, daytime high temperatures will reach high 30s to low 40s F, and overnight lows will be high 20s to low 30s F. Wind will be northeast-east at 5-15 mph today, then shift to east at 15-25 mph tomorrow morning, and back to northwest-west on Sunday. Through the weekend snow is expected at higher elevations with the rain/snow line somewhere between 6500’ and 8000’. Showers later today and tonight will favor Big Sky and Cooke City with 5-8”, and elsewhere could get 2-3” by tomorrow morning, with a few more inches possible through the weekend.
Since Friday, there has been a mix of sun and clouds with no significant precipitation. Temperatures have generally been above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. On Monday morning, temperatures are in the teens to 20s F, with 10-20 mph winds from the west to northwest.This week, peak high temperatures in the 40s to low 60s F will be on Wednesday, with the warmest temperatures occurring in the mountains around Bozeman and Big Sky. In many areas, nighttime lows will be above freezing. Temperatures will cool again on Thursday, with a mix of rain and snow beginning Wednesday night.
Since Monday, there’s been a mix of sun and clouds and rain and snow (depending on elevation). A storm on Tuesday and Wednesday brought over a foot of snow to the northern Gallatin and Madison Ranges, with 9-10” across much of the rest of the advisory area and around 3” near West Yellowstone and Island Park. High temperatures have been in the 20s and 30s F with lows in the single digits and teens F. Winds have been variable, shifting around the compass. Expect mostly sunny skies and increasingly warm temperatures over the next couple days with highs in the 30s F today, 40s F tomorrow, and 50s F on Sunday. It may snow and/or rain on Sunday, but don’t expect much accumulation.
On Monday morning, mountain temperatures are in the 20s F at upper elevations near Island Park and Cooke City and in the 30s to low-40s F across the rest of the advisory area. Winds are all over the map, blowing 5-15 mph from the south, west, and north. It is raining in Bozeman, Big Sky, West Yellowstone and Island Park, with 1-2” of snow at higher elevations in Island Park and Cooke City.Well above-freezing temperatures will continue Monday and Tuesday, with a mix of rain, snow, and sun. A winter storm arrives on Tuesday night. Temperatures will cool to below freezing. Winds will be from the west to the northwest. Storm totals will be 10-15” near Cooke City, 8-12” near Bozeman and Big Sky and 5-10” in West Yellowstone and Island Park by the time snow tapers off on Thursday.
This morning temperatures are low 30s to mid-40s F with high 20s to mid-30s F near Cooke City. Wind is out of the south-southwest at 5-10 mph with gusts of 15-25 mph. There is no new snow. Today, under mostly sunny skies, temperatures will reach high 40s to low 60s F, and wind will be 5-10 mph from various directions. Clouds will increase tonight, and in some places skies might cloud up this afternoon. There is a chance for rain tonight and tomorrow, turning to chances for snow late tomorrow into Tuesday.
Skies are blue and there is no new snow. Mountain temperatures are in the 30s and 40s F this morning. Winds are out of the southwest and west at 10-20 mph with 30-50 mph gusts. High temperatures today will be a few degrees warmer than yesterday, reaching well into the 50s F in many mountain areas. Winds will be 10-15 mph out of the southwest. Today will be mostly sunny, with chances for some thundershowers this afternoon, but no significant precipitation expected.
Mountain temperatures this morning are in the mid-30s, having not dropped below freezing overnight. There is no new snow. Winds are out of the southwest and west at 10-15 mph around Bozeman, Big Sky, and Cooke City and 25-40 mph with 45 mph gusts around Island Park and West Yellowstone. High temperatures today will be in the 40s and 50s F. Moderate to strong southwest and west winds will continue. Clouds may move in this afternoon with the chance for some snow/rain showers and maybe some thunder as well.

Since yesterday morning the Bridger Range, Hyalite and Big Sky received 3-7” of new snow, and 1-3” fell elsewhere. Wind has been out of the northwest at 10-20 mph with gusts of 25-40 mph. Temperatures are teens to 20s F. Today, temperatures will reach mid-30s F under clearing skies, and wind will be west-northwest at 10-15 mph with gusts to 25 mph. The next chance for a few inches of snow is during the day tomorrow.
The Bridger Range has 8-19” of new snow since yesterday morning, Hyalite got 7”, Cooke City and Big Sky got 4”, and 1-3” fell near West Yellowstone and Island Park. Temperatures are teens to 20 F. Yesterday wind was west-northwest at 15-25 mph with gusts of 35-50 mph, and overnight wind decreased to 5-15 mph with gusts of 15-30 mph. Today temperatures will reach high 20s to low 30s F with west-northwest wind at 10-25 mph. Snow showers will continue today and tonight. By morning expect 6-10” in the Bridger Range, 3-6” near Big Sky and Cooke City, and 1-2” near West Yellowstone and Island Park.
Temperatures fell below freezing last night for the first time in several days. A dusting to an inch of new snow fell around Bozeman, Big Sky, and Cooke City, with 2-3” around West Yellowstone and Island Park. After blowing hard overnight during the frontal passage, winds are now 5-15 mph out of the west. Winds will pick back up this afternoon. High temperatures will be in the 20s and low 30s F. Snowfall will start this morning in northern areas and spread south during the day. Expect 3-6” to fall by tomorrow morning.
Mountain temperatures this morning are generally above freezing, in the 30s and 40s F. Winds are 15-20 mph with 30-60 mph gusts out of the SW-SE. Breezy southerly winds will continue today. High temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s F, very similar to yesterday’s. The sun may make a brief appearance in places this morning, but it will mostly be cloudy with a good chance for a sprinkle of rain or a dusting of snow today, before more moisture moves in tonight. By tomorrow morning, expect 2-4” of new snow around Island Park and West Yellowstone with a trace-2” elsewhere.
Under mostly cloudy skies mountain temperatures are a few degrees above freezing and winds are from the SW-SE at 15-35 mph. Today is forecasted to become windier and still warm with cloud cover and intermittent sun. Temperatures will rise to the high 40s and low 50s before cooling tonight and a changing weather pattern back to winter(ish).
At 5 a.m. under clear skies the mountains around Bozeman and Big Sky were mostly above freezing while the southern ranges had low temperatures in the upper 20s. Wind is blowing from the W-SW at 10-20 mph in the north and 25-40 mph in the south, which will remain today. Mountain temperatures will reach well into the 50s in the north and 40s in the south. Some clouds late this evening will impede freezing overnight.

Yesterday morning the mountains got 1-3” of new snow. Yesterday the wind was from the northeast-east at 5-15 mph, and overnight wind shifted to the north-northwest at 5-15 mph with gusts of 20-40 mph. This morning temperatures are teens to low 20s F. Today, under mostly sunny skies, temperatures will reach mid to high 30s F, and wind will be northerly at 5-20 mph. The next couple days will be warmer with daytime temperatures reaching 40s and 50s F before a return to wetter and cooler weather at the end of the week.
Last night the Bridger Range received 2-3” of new snow, and West Yellowstone and Cooke City got 1-2” with none elsewhere. Winds have been southerly to west-northwest at 0-15 mph with gusts of 5-20 mph. This morning temperatures are 20s F. Today, temperatures will reach low to mid-30s F, and wind will be north-northeast at 5-10 mph before increasing to 10-20 mph this afternoon. Mostly cloudy skies will accompany a few snow showers, and by tomorrow morning the mountains could get 1-3” of snow.
There is a trace to an inch of new snow across most of the advisory area, with 2” around Cooke City. Winds are generally 5-10 mph out of the southwest through east with 15-20 mph gusts, but are blowing 25-30 mph with gusts up to 100 mph in Island Park. Temperatures this morning are in the teens F and will rise into the high 20s and 30s F today. Winds will generally remain light. Expect a mix of sun and clouds again today, with snow showers not amounting to much accumulation. A couple inches of snow are possible overnight near Cooke City.
There are 3-5” of new snow near Bozeman and Big Sky, with 7-10” of new snow around West Yellowstone, Island Park, and Cooke City. Strong winds yesterday have backed off and are now blowing 5-10 mph out of the west with 15-25 mph gusts. Light winds will continue today, shifting a bit more southwesterly. Temperatures are in the teens and 20s F this morning and will rise into the high 20s and 30s F. Expect a mix of sun and clouds through the day and a few snow showers, but no real accumulation.
It is snowing in the mountains and the winds are strong. At 6 a.m. the The Bridger Range has a trace, Big Sky has 2” and 3-6” has fallen in the southern ranges. Wind is averaging 15-35 mph with gusts hitting 40-71 mph from the SW-NW. Temperatures are in the low 20s F. Snow will continue today and taper off early tomorrow. Wind will remain westerly and lessen to 15-25 mph sometime this afternoon. By morning the northern mountains will have 3-6” and the southern ranges will have 6-10”.
On Thursday, the mountains received 1-5” of snow, favoring Hyalite Canyon and the areas near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. On Friday morning, temperatures are in the teens to 20s F, and winds are 10-20 mph from the west to northwest.On Friday, mountain temperatures will push into the 40s F under sunny skies. Sun will persist, and temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s F through the weekend. Nighttime temperatures will largely stay above freezing except for the West Yellowstone and Cooke City areas. Winds will be 5-15 mph from the northwest to southwest. There will be no precipitation until early next week when the chance of rain and high-elevation snow showers arrives Monday night.
The recent storm ended late Friday with a total of 36-44” in the Bridger Range, 16-24” in the Madison and Gallatin ranges, and 9-12” near Cooke City and West Yellowstone. Over the weekend wind was west-southwest at 5-20 mph with gusts of 25-35 mph. Temperatures reached high 20s to low 30s F with partly cloudy skies becoming sunny yesterday. Today, wind will be west-southwest at 5-15 mph, temperatures will reach high 30s to low 40s F, and clouds will increase bringing rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains. By tomorrow morning the Bridger Range could have 4-8” of new snow with 2-4” elsewhere.The middle of the week will be sunny with temperatures reaching mid-40s F during the day and dropping to high 20s and low 30s F overnight. Another chance of snow arrives Thursday with westerly wind increasing to 15-25 mph.
Since Tuesday evening the Bridger Range received 32-40” of snow, near Big Sky and Hyalite got 10-12”, and since Monday the mountains near West Yellowstone and Cooke City got 6-9”. Wind has been westerly at 5-20 mph with gusts of 15-30 mph. This morning temperatures are single digits to teens F. The next few days forecast is cold and generally snowy with temperatures reaching high 20s to low 30s F through Saturday, then mid-40s on Sunday. Wind will be 15-25 mph out of the west. The mountains near Bozeman and Big Sky are favored for snowfall with 3-5” possible today and 3-7” tomorrow through Saturday. Near Cooke City could receive 3-7” through Saturday and near West Yellowstone might see 2-4”.
This weekend, daytime temperatures climbed above freezing during the day with 5-20 mph winds from the southwest to the northwest. There was no new snow. Last night was the lightest freeze of the weekend, with temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s F.Monday will be the warmest day of the week, with temperatures in the 40s F under partly cloudy skies. Cloud cover will increase as the day progresses, and light snow begins Monday night. Snow and cooler temperatures will continue from Tuesday through Friday. The first pulse of snowfall will bring 5-6” to the Big Sky area, 4-5” to the mountains around Bozeman, and 2-4” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City by Wednesday morning.
Yesterday snowfall dropped 13” in the Bridger Range, 10-12” in Cooke City and Hyalite, and 5-7” near Big Sky and West Yellowstone. This morning temperatures are single digits to teens F, and today temperatures will reach mid-20s to low 30s F. Yesterday wind was southwest at 15 mph with gusts of 25-45 mph, and this morning wind is northerly at 5-15 mph. A couple inches of snow are possible today before skies clear for the weekend. Wind will remain calm to light out of the north through tomorrow, and on Sunday will shift westerly and increase to 15-25 mph. Temperatures will reach high 30s on Saturday and high 40s on Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the teens tonight and mid-20s to low 30s F the next couple nights.
This morning, temperatures are high 20s to mid-30s F, and wind is out of the southwest at 10-20 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph. Today will have increasing clouds and temperatures reaching low to mid-40s F. Wind will continue out of the southwest at 15-30 mph before colder air and snow arrive this evening. Tomorrow heavy snow is expected to deliver 10-12” to most of the mountains in southwest Montana with more possible in the Bridger Range, Hyalite and Big Sky.
Mountain temperatures remained above freezing for the second night in a row, with lows in the 30s and 40s F. Winds ramped up to 10-30 mph from the south to the west and will increase through the day, averaging 20-45 mph. High temperatures will range from the upper 40s F to near 60 degrees F. Temperatures will likely drop below freezing tonight, and a potent spring snowstorm will move into the area Wednesday night.
Temperatures are generally in the mid-30s this morning, with only the highest elevations experiencing below-freezing temperatures last night. Winds are 10-15 mph from the west to southwest. Today, highs in the mountains will range from 50 to 60 degrees F with 10-20 mph winds from the south to the southwest.

Today will be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching mid-40s F, and wind will be westerly at 10-20 mph. Very warm temperatures are expected the next couple days, then the next chance for snow is Tuesday night.

Last night 2” fell at Big Sky, and an inch in Taylor Fork and Cooke City. Wind is blowing west to southwest averaging 10-20 mph with gusts of 35 mph. Wind speed and direction will remain unchanged today. Under mostly clear skies mountain temperatures will rise from the single digits to the upper 20’s to mid 30’s F. No new snow is expected, but today is the first day of a potential 4 day solar storm of sunny skies, warm weather, and the emergence of alabaster white feet in flip-flops.
A surprise storm hit the Bridger Range yesterday morning and dropped 6” of low density snow (3%) with another 2” last night. 2” also fell in the northern Gallatin Range with only a trace elsewhere. Wind is 10-20 mph out of W-NW and skies are partly cloudy with temperatures in the single digits F. Today will warm into the 20s F with light westerly wind. Later this afternoon and tonight 1-2” may fall, mostly in the southern regions.
This morning, temperatures are in the single digits to teens F with 5-15 mph wind from the northeast to northwest. Winds are blowing 30-40 mph from the east to the north in the Bridger Range. The mountains received a trace to 1” of snow overnight. Today, temperatures will be in the teens to 20s F with 10-20 mph winds from the north. A trace to 2” of snow will fall by tomorrow morning.
The mountains around Big Sky, West Yellowstone and Cooke City received 1-3” of snow yesterday. Temperatures are in the single digits F, and winds calmed and shifted to the southwest to southeast at 5-10 mph. Today, temperatures will be in the 20s F with east to northeast winds blowing 5-15 mph. West Yellowstone will see up to 5” of snow by tomorrow morning, with a trace to 2” elsewhere.
Since yesterday morning, near West Yellowstone and Cooke City received 10-11” of heavy new snow, and 3-4” fell near Bozeman and Big Sky. Wind has been out of the southwest-west at 15-30 mph with gusts of 40-85 mph. Temperatures are singles to teens F and will reach 20s F today. Wind will continue at 15-30 mph out of the west with gusts to 40 mph. Snow showers will deliver 3-5” near Cooke City and Taylor Fork with 1-3” near Big Sky and West Yellowstone, and maybe 1” near Bozeman by tomorrow morning.
A trace to 3” of new snow fell yesterday morning. Winds are 10-20 mph out of the SW-W with gusts of 15-25 mph. Temperatures are in the teens F this morning and will rise into the 20s and 30s F this afternoon. Moderate SW-W winds will continue. Snow showers today and tonight will bring 1-2” of new snow tomorrow morning.
The mountains received 2-3” of snow in the last 24 hours with temperatures in the low 20s F and light SE-SW wind blowing 10-15 mph with gusts of 23 mph. Snow is starting to fall and will blanket the area with 4-7” by tomorrow morning. Temperatures will remain in the 20s and wind will be light to moderate from the SE-SW. Tomorrow looks to be sunny with more snow forecasted over the weekend.
At 5 a.m., the mountains received 1-2” of snow with wind averaging 10-15 mph and gusting to 25-30 mph from the SE-SW. Temperatures are in the high teens under cloudy skies. Today will remain cloudy with similar wind and temperatures. Light snowfall will start late this afternoon and drop 1-2” by tomorrow morning, with the rest of Thursday forecasted to be snowy.
This morning, temperatures are in the single digits to teens F with 10-15 mph winds from the west to the south. Excepting Cooke City, the mountains received 1-2” of snow yesterday morning before this weekend’s storm exited the area. Today, temperatures will climb into the 20s to around 30 F with 10-15 mph wind from the southwest. A trace to 1” of snow is possible tonight.
Near Bozeman and Big Sky received 4-8” of new snow since yesterday morning, and 1-2” fell near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. Temperatures are singles to teens F. Wind has been out of the northwest-northeast at 5-10 mph with gusts of 15-30 mph. Today temperatures will reach low 20s F with westerly wind at 5-15 mph. Snow showers tapered off overnight, and today near Cooke City could get 1” of snow with no snow expected elsewhere.

Wind will be 5-15 mph out of variable directions. Snow showers are expected through today with 4-8” possible near Bozeman and Big Sky, and 2-4” near Cooke City and West Yellowstone.
Snow totals vary widely this morning. There are 12” of new snow in Hyalite, 6-7” in the Bridgers, near Big Sky, and at Lionhead and 3-4” in the Taylor Fork and near Cooke City. Temperatures are in the single digits and teens F. North and west wind at 10-20 mph with gusts of 20-30 mph will continue today. High temperatures will be in the teens and 20s F. Snowfall will continue today and tonight with 6-10” near Bozeman and Big Sky and 3-5” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City by tomorrow morning.
At 6 a.m, there are a trace to 4” of new snow. Winds are 15-20 mph out of the southwest and west with gusts of 25-30 mph. Temperatures are in the teens this morning and will rise into the 20s and lows 30s F this afternoon. Moderate southwest and west winds will continue. Snowfall will pick up through the day. Expect 2-4” by sunset in most of the advisory area and potentially up to 8” near Big Sky. By tomorrow morning, accumulations will be 12-18” in the Bozeman and Big Sky areas, with 4-8” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City.
This morning, mountain temperatures are in the teens F with 5-15 mph wind from the south to northwest, and there is no new snow. COOKE CITYUPDATE: We are raising the avalanche danger in Cooke City to CONSIDERABLE. In the last 12-24 hours there was a skier-triggered avalanche and a natural avalanche at Daisy Pass (observation and photo). The natural slide was found by the groomer on the road near the pass. With only an inch of new snow and moderate winds the snowpack was not expected to avalanche. I was wrong. Our uncertainty on what exactly is going on is high. Cooke City had many large avalanches break into Tuesday. We are unsure what layer these slides are breaking on. My advice is to stay off of avalanche terrain. Natural and human-triggered slides are likely.

Snow will continue through today with 4-7” near Bozeman and Big Sky and 1-2” in the southern areas.
On Sunday morning, skies are clear, temperatures are 10-20F and wind is 15-25 mph from the southwest to northwest. There’s no new snow to report and we don’t expect any until maybe Wednesday. High pressure dominates and wind will be light with mountain temperatures settling into the high 20s.
On Saturday morning, winds are 15-25 mph with gusts of 25-40 mph from the west to northwest. Temperatures are in the single digits to teens F. In most areas it snowed a few inches Tuesday and Wednesday, but has been dry since. Lower elevations in Hyalite got a surprising 13” of low density snow on Wednesday night. Temperatures will rise into the teens and 20s F today with sunny skies. Winds will be moderate and westerly. No snow is expected through the weekend.
On Tuesday morning, mountain temperatures are in the single digits to teens F with 10-20 mph winds from the west to northwest. The mountains received 1-3” of new snow except in the Big Sky and Hyalite Canyon where 4-6” fell.
High temperatures for the next couple of days will be in the 20s F with 5-15 mph winds from the west to northwest. Flurries will continue today around Big Sky and Cooke City with an inch of accumulation. A storm arriving Wednesday will bring 5-6” to the mountains around Cooke City, Big Sky and Bozeman and a trace to 1” near West Yellowstone.
Since Tuesday morning the mountains received 10-12” around West Yellowstone and Cooke City, and 1-4” near Big Sky and Bozeman. Strong east winds on Tuesday shifted west and south yesterday, calming to 10-15 mph with gusts of 25-35 mph this morning. Temperatures will remain chilly with highs only reaching the teens and 20s F through the weekend. Winds will remain moderate and generally westerly for the next few days. An inch or two of snow are possible around West Yellowstone today before conditions turn dry until at least the middle of next week.
Since yesterday morning the mountains received 7-10” of new snow with the highest amounts near Big Sky, West Yellowstone and Cooke City. Yesterday, wind was south to southwest at 15-25 mph with gusts of 40-60 mph, and today wind has lessened to 10-15 mph with gusts of 20-35 mph. Temperatures will reach high 20s to low 30s today, except near Bozeman where they will remain in the teens to low 20s F. Over the next couple days, temperatures will gradually cool to single digits and near zero F by Thursday, and winds will be light to moderate and generally out of the south to east. More snow is expected tonight with 3-7” by morning and another 2-4” during the day tomorrow.
In the last 24 hours the mountains around West Yellowstone and Cooke City received 10” of snow, and it’s still snowing. Areas around Big Sky, Hyalite and the Bridger Range got 2-3”. Wind is averaging 15-30 mph with gusts hitting 50. It is blowing out of the SE in the Bridger Range and SW-W everywhere else. Today, expect another inch or two in the northern areas and 6” in the southern mountains. Winds will remain strong with temperatures in the 20s F. A little snowfall Sunday night will turn into a snowstorm on Monday. Stay tuned, and in the meantime put fresh batteries in your beacon, test your airbag and dust off your helmet. Winter’s footsteps are getting louder.
Winter returned yesterday after a mild week. The mountains near Big Sky and Bozeman received 4-7” of snow with 1-3” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. Lingering snow showers will exit the area this morning and winds be 5-10 mph from the north to the west with temperatures in the teens to 20s F. After the big storm last weekend, snowfall tapered off on Monday night leaving an additional couple inches near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. Through the rest of the week there were occasional flurries without substantial accumulation. High temperatures in the mountains have been right around freezing. The coming days will bring continued cool, dry conditions and moderate winds, with perhaps a bit more sun than this past week. The next chance for snow isn’t until the middle of next week.

This weekend, rain turned to snow across the advisory area and the ranges near Bozeman and Big Sky received 20-30” of new snow and 10” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. The first half of the week will bring 20-35 MPH winds from the northwest to the southwest. The Cooke City and West Yellowstone areas will get 3-7” of snow by Thursday morning with lighter accumulation in the mountains near Bozeman and Big Sky. Mountain temperatures will remain in the 20s to mid-30s F through the week.

Unsettled weather beginning Wednesday brought a couple inches of snow to the mountains around Bozeman and Big Sky, with 5-10” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City. At lower elevations this precipitation fell as rain. Heavy snowfall is expected today around Bozeman and Big Sky with 4-8” falling by the end of the day. Only an inch or two will fall around West Yellowstone and Cooke City. Tomorrow will be sunny with temperatures above freezing. Sunday will be cloudy again with a sprinkling of snow possible.
Between Thursday night and Sunday morning, a large spring storm left 1-2 ft of fresh snow across most of the advisory area (Lionhead only received a few inches). The storm system moved out yesterday, with skies clearing and temperatures rising above freezing. Today will be mostly sunny with mountain temperatures in the 40s and 50s F. Clouds will move in for most of the rest of the week, but there will also be sunny periods mixed in. High temperatures will be in the 40s F. There are chances for light precipitation starting on Wednesday, but it won’t amount to more than a few inches of snow.
We are at the leading edge of a significant spring storm. Temperatures on Friday morning are in the 20s F with 5-15 mph winds from the west to southeast. Overnight, the mountains received 2-5” of snow except in the West Yellowstone area where precipitation began as rain. Snow and wintery weather will persist through Saturday night with high temperatures in the 30s F and 5-20 mph winds from the north to northwest. By Saturday night the mountains will receive 10-20” of new snow with areas like the Northern Gallatin Range potentially getting more. The sun will come out on Sunday with slightly warmer temperatures.
Since Friday the mountains near Cooke City got 13” of new snow, and near Bozeman, Big Sky and West Yellowstone got 4-6”. Temperatures reached mid 30s F on Saturday and high 20s F yesterday. Wind was west-southwest at 15-25 mph with gusts of 30-60 mph. Today under mostly sunny skies, temperatures will reach mid-40s F, and wind will be 5-25 mph out of the west-southwest. Wind will remain west-southwest through the week with periods of moderate to strong speeds. Temperatures will drop to the teens and 20s F most nights and during the day will reach mid-30s to low 40s F. Tomorrow there is a chance for 1-4” of snow with more possible Thursday night and Friday.
Since Monday, the mountains have received 1-1.5 ft of new snow. Winds have been strong and shifting, including some unusual east winds. Skies stayed mostly cloudy and high temperatures stayed below freezing. This weekend, skies will remain mostly cloudy, high temperatures will be a few degrees warmer (but still unseasonably cool), and snow showers are possible (particularly on Saturday night). Total accumulations will likely be only 2-4” by Monday.
On Monday morning, mountain temperatures are in the single digits to mid-teens F with west to southwest winds blowing 5-15 mph. Sunday night the mountains received 1-2” of new snow. A significant spring storm will move into Southwest Montana Monday afternoon through the middle of the week. Daily high temperatures will be in the teens to 20s F with 10-20 mph winds. The mountains will likely get 10-20” of snow through Wednesday when the storm lightens.

Most of the advisory area received 4-6” of cold smoke with West Yellowstone and Cooke City coming in at 2”. Temperatures will climb into the mid to high single digits F and light winds will continue to swirl during the day before settling back to the southwest to the west by tomorrow. Lingering snow showers will end this morning with no real accumulation.
Temperatures this morning are in the single digits F above and below zero with 5-20 mph winds from the west to northwest. In the last 24 hours, the mountains around Big Sky and Bozeman received 5” of snow and the mountains south of Big Sky through West Yellowstone and Cooke City received 2-3”. Temperatures today will be in the low to mid teens F with 5-15 mph winds from the west to southwest. Periodic snow will bring another 2-5” by morning.
Snow will begin to fall this morning as temperatures drop from teens and low 20s F to single digits by tonight. Wind is out of the southwest-south at 20-30 mph with gusts of 35-55 mph. Today wind will shift to the west and remain moderate to strong. A round of heavy snow this morning will drop 1” near West Yellowstone and the Bridger Range with 2-3” of low-density snow elsewhere by mid-day. An additional 2-3” are possible by tomorrow morning with intermittent snow expected through tomorrow.
This morning there is no new snow. Temperatures are teens to mid-20s F, and low 30s F at low elevations near Big Sky and in the Bridger Range. Wind is westerly at 10-20 mph with gusts of 20-45 mph. Today will be partly sunny with temperatures reaching high 20s to low 30s F. Wind will be out of the west at 15-25 mph. Clouds will increase tonight with snow beginning tomorrow morning and at least a couple inches of snow expected through most of the advisory area during the day tomorrow.
This morning temperatures across most of the advisory area are in the low to mid 20s F with 15-25 mph winds from the west. In Cooke City, the temperature is in the low teens F with 5-10 mph wind from the west. Today, high temperatures will be in the low to mid 30s F and winds will blow 10-20 mph from the southwest. This morning a dusting of snow occurred in the Bridger Range and West Yellowstone, 2” at Big Sky Resort and an inch everywhere else. Wind is averaging 10-15 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph from the north to west and mountain temperatures are in the single digits to low teens. Today will become mostly sunny with temperatures climbing towards 30F and calmer wind. No snow is expected until Monday.
This morning there is no new snow to report, only strong wind blowing southwest to northwest. Around Bozeman and Big Sky speeds are averaging 20-30 mph with gusts of 47 mph while in the south it is averaging 10-15 mph with gusts of 25 mph. Clouds will dissipate this morning and sun will dominate as temperatures rise from the teens to the low 20s. Wind will be mostly west to northwest as speeds lessen today. Tonight it will snow, but just a little, with 1-2” expected by morning.

The Northern Gallatin Range received 6” of snow yesterday with 2-3” everywhere else. Today, temperatures will be in the upper teens to low 20s F with 10-15 mph winds from the north shifting to the southwest. Some areas may get a dusting of snow before the skies become mostly sunny through the day.

In the southern ranges and Cooke City north-northwest wind is 5-15 mph with gusts to 20 mph. Today will be partly sunny with temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s F. Winds will increase in the southern areas. By this afternoon, throughout the advisory area, northwest-west wind will be 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. There is a chance for snow tomorrow afternoon.
As snowfall ended yesterday morning the mountains got 4” in Hyalite and 1-3” near Cooke City and Big Sky. Elsewhere had no snow in the last 24 hours. Wind has been west-northwest at 5-15 mph with gusts to 25 mph, and in the Bridger Range wind at the ridgeline has been 15-20 mph with gusts to 40 mph. This morning temperatures are teens F. Today will be increasingly clear with temperatures in the 20s F and wind from the west-north at 10-20 mph. The next chance for light snow is Monday.
In the last 24 hours the Bridger Range picked up 6-12” of new snow with 5-8” in the Madison and Gallatin Ranges, and 2-3” in Lionhead and Cooke City. Winds are westerly at 15-25 mph with gusts of 30-55 mph (slightly lighter around Cooke City). Winds today will be 15-20 mph out of the west with gusts to 30 mph. Temperatures are in the teens and 20s F this morning and will only rise a few degrees. As snowfall finishes this morning another 2-4” will accumulate around Bozeman and Big Sky with a trace-2” near West Yellowstone and Cooke City.
This morning, mountain temperatures are in the single digits to mid teens F with west to southwest winds averaging around 10 mph with 20 mph in the Bridger Range. Most areas picked up an additional trace to 1” of new snow yesterday morning before the storm passed. Today, temperatures will rise to around 20 F across the advisory area and around 30 F in the Bridger Range. Winds will be 10-20 mph from the west before increasing tonight and snow will begin to fill in during the late morning hours with 4-6” falling by tomorrow.
