We have Papa Dom (@dinodom on Instagram although he isn't really 'on' social media) back on the pod this season to talk about pride and body image in the queer community! The episode starts with chaos and a lot of random noises and musical sounds, but then we jump right in with some recent reads and queer memories. We talk about the importance of pride, favorite pride memories, plans to travel to all the big city prides when we can in the upcoming years. And then we talk about body image in the queer community - expectations that we look a certain way, have a certain body type, present a certain image, are feminine/masculine/androgynous enough, and meet societal expectations. We talk about how social media, especially dating apps, can perpetuate the need to look a certain way to be accepted and seen as 'queer enough.' Then we wrap up by deciding to focus on an individual goal to address and combat our internalized body images this month so we can work on dismantling the pressure to appear perfect for everyone else!

This week we're discussing Malice, a recent release that is a queer/sapphic re-telling of Sleeping Beauty ... from the villain's perspective! We had some mixed reviews for this one; Alex loved it and Sam thought it was okay. But that led to some interesting discussions on what worked/what didn't for us individually, where we would have liked more or less information, internalized standards of beauty, and how people always view 'villains' as ugly/weird/fat/disfigured, where we think book 2 will go, and more. One thing we definitely agreed on? We loved the sapphic romance and loved the open door representation!

Today we had the honor to talk with Libby @sleeprunreadrepeat, our friend and fellow book podcast co-host (check out @booksandthecitypod and their website www.booksandthecitypod.com for some amazing book discussions and recommendations - seriously, our TBRs grow even more after listening to their episodes every Monday). Libby and Alex and Sam have some whirlwind discussions on this almost two hour episode. All three of us had similar coming out journey's that started later in our 20s and led us through journeys (that we are still on) of acceptance, overcoming internalized shame, and recognizing that each of us are on our own path and there is no right or wrong way to be queer!

Today we talk about a 2021 debut book - Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters! We both loved this book, for a multitude of reasons. It is messy, incredibly queer, it teaches you and asks hard questions and causes you to sit and think about ideas and concepts. It speaks on womanhood, what it means to be a mother/parent, creating nontraditional families, and queer culture. There is a true beauty in reading books that don't try to apologize or hide what they are and who they are for - and Detransition, Baby does not hide its messy, its realness, its queerness. We asked Dom to step in and talked a bit about his friendship with Alex, his coming out moments, and his Catholic Roman Guard gay realization. Onwards to Becky’s article, we wanted to discuss the fine line between queer #ownvoices narratives and forcing authors to come out to prove authentic queer representation. We grapple with coming out experiences and how to be inclusive in creating safe spaces for people to have their coming out journey’s on their own timeline. #ownvoices is an important tool, not a weapon, in helping marginalized people identify a story/author that has similar experiences to your own.
