Are You Where You Want To Be?September 29, 2024NOTES1 Samuel 161 Samuel 171 Samuel 24:1-71 Peter 5:6-7Key Points* When you’re unfit in life, you’re foggy in faith. * You’ll never be happy where you are if God is not the Lord and Leader of your life. * Maybe you aren’t where you want to be because you aren’t willing to be where you don’t want to be : “to see the stream, you have to be willing to brave the wasteland.” * God can change you in the cave you choose. * You have to choose to come out of the cave. Discussion Questions:1) Are you where you want to be? Why or why not? Where do you WANT to be that you’re not?
2) Where do you know that you need to go but don’t want to? Where is God calling you that you’re choosing not to step into?3) What “cave” have you chosen in your life that has led to isolation, regret, and fear? How did God meet you in that “cave”? How did He redeem your choices?4) Our faith exists because Jesus came out of the cave. What cave are you living in today? What can you do to step out of it and move forward?HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. Where Do You Need to Go?September 22, 2024NOTESPsalm 37:51 Samuel 172 Samuel 11Key Points* You can’t assess where you are until you know where you want to go. * Where you want to go is not always where God needs you. * You cannot go where God needs you until you see a need. * When you stop fighting for needs, you fulfill your own selfish desires. * Worship realigns you with God’s purpose for your life – which is where He needs you to go. Discussion Questions:1) How do YOU envision your future? What do you see yourself doing? Where do YOU want to go?2) Where does GOD need you to go? Does it align with what YOU want for your future?3) Is God truly the center of your life? Why do you come to church? Do you come to church with a posture of selfishness, or a posture of worship? What needs to change in your heart and your schedule in order to make worship a priority?4) Spend time in prayer. Ask God where He needs to take you. Pray for a posture of worship – one where you are open to where God is calling you.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. Where Are You?September 15, 2024NOTES1 Samuel 16Isaiah 43:18-19Key Points
Wherever you are – there you are!
Only God sees your heart : what others may reject, God’s hand anoints.
Maybe you are where you are because you often allow the wrong people to decide what God can and can’t do in your life.
The presence of your insufficiencies does not signify the absence of God.
Start where you are!
Discussion Questions:
1) Where are you today? Where are you financially? Professionally? Relationally? With God?
2) When in the past have you allowed other people to decide what God could or couldn’t do in your life? What was the outcome? How was God’s power magnified through your insufficiencies?
3) Start where you are. What is one thing you can do this week to “do the small things” that God is calling you to? How can you faithfully follow Him this week? Pray for discernment to follow where He’s leading.

Get It TogetherSeptember 8, 2024NOTESMatthew 11:25-30Isaiah 40:28-31Romans 8:28Key Points* “Tired” does stupid stuff when you don’t have it together. * God is concerned about your state of perpetual exhaustion. * God is troubled by your tired because your tired has led to some of your most sinful decisions. * Sin is anything that pulls you from God’s purpose. * God performs miracles to show that He is fully reliable. * Finding rest requires taking his yoke – the yoke doesn’t imply the absence of work but the ease of it. Discussion Questions:1) Where are you tired? What is causing your physical and spiritual exhaustion?2) When is a time in your life that you allowed your exhaustion to lead you to make sinful decisions? What was the outcome?3) Who is in the “yoke” with you? Who is carrying the weight of your exhaustion with you?4) Spend time in prayer. Thank God for the way that He cares for our exhaustion and for the way that He eases our burden and gives us rest. Ask Him to help you rest in Him and allow a community of believers to come around you and carry the burden with you.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. Willing or NotSeptember 1, 2024NOTESIsaiah 6:1-8Jonah 1:1-3Jonah 2:8-10Jonah 3:3-5Jonah 4:1-3Matthew 28:19-20Key Points* God has good plans for us. We can live in the plans knowing that they are good – not easy, but good. * God’s purpose is going to happen. Are you willing to be a part of it? You can be enthusiastic like Isaiah or you can be bitter and angry like Jonah. * We sometimes fear being willing to say “Here I am” because he will ask you to go somewhere or do something. * We are called to go and make disciples – to let others know about the love of God. Discussion Questions:1) What motivates you to do things that are challenging or uncomfortable? How does this apply to your spiritual life?2) Isaiah eagerly volunteered to serve God, while Jonah was reluctant. Which of these attitudes do you most relate to in your own spiritual journey?3) What holds you back from fully committing to where God is calling you? How can you overcome these barriers?4) Where do you think God is calling you to serve right now? What fears or concerns do you have about saying “Here I am, send me” to God? Just Getting StartedAugust 25, 2024NOTESActs 2John 2:10-11Key Points* Wherever the Holy Spirit is, something powerful happens. * When God gives you a vision, resistance is part of starting something new. * What may feel like a distraction, God is using to refocus our faith. * God’s presence is what takes you beyond your ability. Discussion Questions:1) Think of a time in your life when you started something new. What was hard about it? Did you have resistance/hesitancy to starting? What was the outcome?2) What is your greatest resistance/pushback NOW? What is preventing you from stepping into what God is leading you to?3) Spend time in prayer. Ask that God would help you step out in faith and believe that He is your future and that He is fighting for you. God is not against you – ask that you would truly believe that and have the faith to say “why NOT me??”. Ask God to use you in mighty ways.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. Opposites AttractAugust 18, 2024NOTESActs 9:1-19Romans 6:11-13Key Points* It’s difference that draws us together. * The opposite ends of your life experience are what others find attractive in faith. * Sometimes not being chosen is what you need to appreciate the power of being chosen. * When you forget that God chose you, you can’t hold the tension of the old you and the new you. * Baptism isn’t our arrival, it’s the beginning. Discussion Questions:1) Give an example of where you’ve seen “opposites attract” in your life.2) Don’t forget where God has brought you! Get a piece of paper : write down characteristics of the “old you” before faith and characteristics of the “new you”. What has God saved you from? Where has He brought you?3) Spend time in prayer – thank God for what He has done in your life and what He has saved you from. God Loves MessyAugust 11, 2024NOTESActs 8:26-38Genesis 3:8-10Key Points* We want our physical reality to accommodate our spiritual distress. * The only thing that can accommodate our mess is the grace of God. * The grace of God is that He loves our mess. * Humiliation leads to hiding. * We buy the lie that isolation will bring healing from humiliation. * God loves people that are willing to believe that a messy something is better than a perfect nothing. Discussion Questions:1) How do you define God’s grace? Where have you seen His grace in your life?2) What “stain” in your life is leaving you feeling ashamed and humiliated? How is it making you “hide” from God? Do you BELIEVE that His grace is good enough to cover it? Do you believe that He loves you DESPITE it?3) Spend time in prayer. Ask God to bring those areas of your life to your mind and ask that He would allow you to lay them at His feet. Pray for a faith that believes His grace is good and that you are deserving of it.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. I’m Not SorryAugust 4, 2024NOTESMatthew 3:1-6Isaiah 40:3Key Points* Emotion produces little to no change – just saying sorry isn’t enough. * God isn’t interested in your “sorry”. * An invitation to repent is an invitation to become something brand new. * When you change your mind, your faith is no longer about knowing all the answers. It’s about “who’s next?” * We can experience the Kingdom of Heaven here and now. * Only the mighty work of God can change someone. Discussion Questions:1) Where in your life have you experienced an apology that didn’t “mean” anything? Were you giving the apology? Or was someone else apologizing to you?2) Where in your faith are you continually apologizing to God? What sin is holding you captive and you don’t seem to be able to move past it?
3) Spend time in prayer. Ask God to reveal the areas that are holding you captive. Ask Him to change your perspective and to give you “change your mind”.4) What are next steps you can take? Cancelled Is Not Our CultureJuly 28, 2024NOTESGalations 2:20-21Acts 10Mark 15:34Key Points* We define human beings as “good” or “bad” based on one event. * Seeing others’ mess is Satan’s way of reminding you of your own struggle – it’s the stronghold he uses to make you feel dismissed from the love of God. * Jesus holds the tension between grace and truth. * You need the truth of your brokenness so you can understand your need for His grace. * Forgiveness has no favorites. * “Cancelled” isn’t our culture. “Continued” is God’s story. Discussion Questions:1) What stronghold is Satan using to make you feel dismissed from the love of God?2) Where do you struggle to love yourself the same way that you love others? And the opposite – where do you struggle to love others the same way that you love yourself?3) How are you serving others? It’s Not Me, It’s You.July 21, 2024NOTESLuke 18:35-43John 5:6Key Points* Some of your relationships may be pulling you away from your calling and your identity. * Change craves change. * “thelies” = “God’s best offer” * Some people in your life don’t want the help, they just want the attention. * You can’t save people who don’t want help. * Run with the winners. * Faith is when you start wanting what God wants for you. Discussion Questions:1) Have you been in relationships that pulled you away from your identity and calling? How did that make you feel? Are you still in that relationship? If not, how did you walk away from it?2) Do you want what God wants for you? Do you have faith to “run with the winners”?3) Spend a few moments in prayer. Ask God to guide you in your relationships – that you would not allow others to pull you away from your calling, but would instead invest in the people that want what God wants for you.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. It’s Not You, It’s Me.July 14, 2024NOTESJohn 211 Peter 1:1-16Psalm 139:23-24Key Points* Maybe you’re walking with God, but still doing the things you wish you wouldn’t – you relate to Peter. * The only thing you have control over is yourself. * The baggage we carry is meant to make us better. * Holy means healing. * Our baggage is where God works. * Be aware of your reactions. Ask yourself 5 questions: + What happened? + What am I feeling? + What is the story that I’m telling myself? + What does the Bible say? + What counter-instinctual action is needed? Discussion Questions:1) Where in your life do you relate to Peter? Read Matthew 14 and John 21. Do you doubt where God is working? Do you say the wrong things? Do you compare your faith to other people’s?2) Think about the “baggage” that you’re bringing into the relationships in your life : anger, resentment, jealousy, insecurity, fear? How have you seen God work in those areas? How is He refining you through that baggage?3) Pastor Sheila mentions the importance of having people in your life that can call out your baggage and also having a devoted time with God each day where He can refine you. Who are those people in your life? Do you have a dedicated time with God each day? If not, what do you need to do to prioritize that?4) Look at the 5 questions listed about in the “key points” section. Think of a situation in your life where walking through those questions could have improved an outcome or allowed God to work in a mighty way. They Can’t Fix YouJuly 7, 2024NOTESGenesis 27Genesis 29Genesis 32Key Points* We enter into relationships thinking that people will fix us. * We have a God-shaped hole in our hearts that we try to fill with people. * Our true identity comes only from God. * With Christ, we are made whole. Discussion Questions:1) Have you ever used relationships or people to try and “fix” the problems in your life? How did that turn out?2) Where are you currently “wrestling” with God? Where is He working in and through you to give you a new identity?3) Spend time in prayer. Unlock The BlessingJune 30, 2024NOTES2 Corinthians 9:6-82 Corinthians 8:1-12Key Points* God’s impact is not limited to your generosity, but our level of generosity controls the amount of light we shine. * Giving is an opportunity. Giving in love is a sacrifice. Sacrifice without love leads to scarcity. * Oftentimes, our worry gets in the way of God’s work. Don’t let your worry block the world from God’s blessing. * The difference between those who live generously and those who sow sparingly is their view of the source. * To unlock the blessing, start sowing. Discussion Questions:1) What is playing in your ear? Do you have an abundant mindset? Or a sparing mindset? Are you convinced that God is able? Or do you worry about giving up control?2) Where in your life are you focused on what you don’t have instead of what God can use?3) How do you need to expand your faith and trust in God through giving? Discussion Questions:1) What walls in your life need to fall? What is crowding God out and shrinking your faith? Anger, bitterness, resentment, jealousy, greed, pride?2) What’s not working in your life that you keep going back to? What habits/routines/fears are holding you back?3) Spend time in prayer. Discussion Questions:1) What do you think of when you think of “home”? Do you feel like you’re winning at home? Or losing?2) What would it look like if your kids lived FROM your approval instead of FOR your approval? How can you help them feel CHOSEN so they don’t CHASE after your approval? Start With The EndJune 9, 2024NOTESDeuteronomy 31Deuteronomy 34Numbers 27:15-23Exodus 18Key Points* Sometimes God’s future is in the fulfillment of the successor. He may give you a vision and ask you to lead and invest in it, but you may never see the rewards of it. * There are 5 rules to life that faith will teach us: + Life is hard. + You’re not important. + Your life is not about you. + You are not in control. + You’re going to die. * God’s story continues through the people you empower. * God’s greatest calling on your life is that OTHERS would begin to reap a God-sized future because YOU put in the hard work. * Ask yourself : “Who can I lead today that can lead this when I’m gone tomorrow?” Discussion Questions:1) What would you want people to say about you if they had one paragraph to describe your life/legacy?2) How long will your “line” be? Discussion Questions:1) What makes you feel alive? What brings you the most joy? Make a list.2) Is the love that you have for God stronger than that? Don’t Worry About The WhetherMay 19, 2024NOTESDeuteronomy 1:9-27Genesis 12:1-3Numbers 13Key Points* God has freed you from captive to calling. * God’s plan is where He planted you. Don’t worry about the “whether” – take possession of it! * Sometimes God’s calling comes with unfavorable conditions, and that’s the greatest thing holding you back. * Following God wholeheartedly is when you place the calling of God over the conditions of your life. Discussion Questions:1) How can you choose God even when the world thinks it’s dumb?2) When you’re worried about the “whether”, you miss the calling God has placed on your life. Where have you seen God use you in small (or big!) ways to bless those around you because you “took possession” of His calling?3) Wholeheartedly following Jesus means you place His calling on your life over the conditions of your life. Take time to pray. Ask that God would use you right where you are and that you would “take possession” of what He has given you. Discussion Questions:1) What would it look for you to live a grace-FULL life?2) Where do you find yourself not extending grace? What people in your life do you need to change your perspective of in order to respond in grace?3) Spend time in prayer. Why Am I Here?May 5, 2024NOTESPsalm 63:1-4Exodus 17:1-11Key Points* Worship is our “why”. * Without knowing “why”, “what” will always get in the way. * Worship is when we faithfully and gratefully respond to a holy God, no matter WHAT is happening. * Lifted hands signifies victory and it signifies surrender – and surrender is where our greatest victory happens. Discussion Questions:1) Giving God our highest praise is often manipulated by what is happening in our lives. Front Row PeopleApril 28, 2024NOTESDeuteronomy 20:1-9Luke 9:51-62Key Points* Front row is where the battle is won. * Front row people recognize that they’re in a fight. * Front row people are relentless. Discussion Questions:1) If front row people know that they’re in a fight, how do we show up when we’re living in faith? How have YOU been showing up?2) Are you relentless or reluctant? Are you ready to step into what God is calling you to, or are you making excuses for why you’re not ready and why you’re not qualified for God to use you?3) How can you be relentless this week? Live GenerouslyApril 21, 2024NOTESExodus 35:4-22Exodus 36:2-7Key Points* Generosity is a lifestyle, not a limitation. * It’s the tangibles in our lives that project the way we want to be perceived. * There’s no limit to what God can do when you decide to live generously. * Generous people don’t give from abundant wealth, but the anticipated work. Discussion Questions:1) The difference between those who live generously and those who who wish they could is their mindset – their understanding of what is “enough”. Where in your life are you limiting God’s ability to work because you don’t believe you have “enough”?2) God has already given you more than enough. You may not have a six figure paycheck, but you have A paycheck. Generous people don’t fit God into their budget, but they allow God to create the budget. Pray for God to guide your finances. Pray for a release of control over your finances and for God to move and provide in your life as you begin to live generously.3) When we are willing, God accomplishes incredible things. Put On WeightApril 14, 2024NOTESLuke 14:1-142 Corinthians 9:8Key Points* The insight to invite is the weight. * Weight signifies the incoming work of God. * One of the greatest ways to champion someone’s faith is as simple as an invitation. * Put on weight – invitation begins with your story. Discussion Questions:1) What invitation changed your life?2) Weight signifies the incoming work of God. Where have you felt “weight”, or the prompting of the Holy Spirit, throughout your life? How did you respond? Where do you feel that “weight” right now?3) What are the “I care, but….” excuses that you’re making in your life right now to avoid stepping into what God is calling you to? Where do you feel insecure or unqualified?4) Think of someone in your life that you could invite to church. Write down their name. Pray for an opportunity and boldness to make the invite. Ask God to remove the insecurities you have and excuses that you make. Pray that your invitation would be fruitful – that God would work in ways that only He can.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. Relentlessly PursuingApril 7, 2024NOTESLuke 14:15-23Key Points* The church should never be outpaced. * In God’s Kingdom, the highest seat takes the lowest form – a servant. * When you’re in pursuit, you have the heart of a servant. * Bearing your cross isn’t a status symbol. It’s an identity marker of your purpose. * True hope is relentless for the hopeless. Discussion Questions:1) Where in your life have you made excuses in order to avoid God’s invitation or a calling on your life?2) We are called to have the same passion that Jesus had for those that are lost – that is the cross we are called to bear. We are to relentlessly pursue those that do not know Him. How are you doing that? How CAN you do that as you move throughout this week/month/year?3) Take time to pray. Spend time asking God to give you a relentless heart for those that do not know Him. Pray for boldness and passion to pursue the hopeless and for the words to share your faith. Ask God to reveal opportunities and people in your life that you can “bear your cross” and Be Hope to others.HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!GIVING1st Church ChampionFIRST TIME?LET’S GO!HOPE TEAMCOME MATTER HERECONNECT NOW!LET’S GO!LOCATIONS & TIMESLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDCONNECT CARDLET’S GO!HOPE UNLEASHEDLET’S GO!HOPE TEAMBE HOPEGROUP LEADERSIGN-UP!GIVING1ST CHURCH CHAMPIONSHAREShare this message!SET LISTLIFE IS NOT MEANT TO BE LIVED ALONE. The Other Side Of HopeMarch 31, 2024NOTESMatthew 28:1-6Matthew 14:12-14Key Points The “solitary place” in your life is the tragedy that leaves you breathless. * Compassion is the gift from God that makes you feel forgotten. * Hope is the ability to see the redemptive side of the story. * The miracle is the breath between tragedy (“He is not here”) and the redemptive side (“He is risen!”) Discussion Questions:1) What in your life right now is leaving you breathless? What is the “solitary place” that you are currently living in? Sit in it for a few minutes. What feelings does it bring up? Anxiety? Hopelessness? Despair? Fear?2) What’s God doing in your life now because you decided to keep breathing? What’s the redemptive part of your story because you didn’t show up?3) Spend time in prayer. Thank God that the cross was not the end of the story. Rejoice that He was not done writing the story of salvation at the cross, and rejoice that He is not done writing YOUR story. Pray for strength to keep showing up and for eyes to see where God is working and where He is working redemption.Ephesians 1:18-21Key Points “There” doesn’t exist because “there” is always changing. * We compromise our values, our character, and our integrity to get “there”. * There is only “here”. God has already given us everything we need and more. * The inheritance we receive is the power of God. Discussion Questions:1) When we believe in Jesus, we have access to the power of God. What has the power of God been doing through you in the last week? Month? Year? How have you seen God’s power displayed in your life?2) Where have you seen God’s power at work in the lives of other people? The God Who Made MeMarch 17, 2024NOTESGenesis 41:46-54Psalm 34:1-10Key Points* God makes me to make me. * Your focus defines your future. * Adversity is not the failure of God, but the favor of God. * God can’t make you until you make Him first. Discussion Questions:1. Your focus defines your future. In your life, are you more focused on what’s making you a victim or what’s giving you a victory? How has your perspective changed the outcome of a situation in the past? 2. Suffering in our life produces perseverance. It’s not the failure of God, but is instead the favor of God on our lives. We go through adversity so that God can make us into who He wants us to become. What is the suffering in your life currently producing? “Sob story” or “I’m still standing”? 3. The God Who RedeemsFebruary 25, 2024NOTESIsaiah 43:18-19Genesis 37:2-11Matthew 3:17Key Points* What we see gives us a perception of who God ISN’T. Yet what we DON’T see gives us a truer picture of who God IS. * Every trial, test, and temptation is not an attack from God, but about His all-out affection for you. * God’s affection is often demonstrated by developing you through the difficulty. * The God we don’t see is the God who sees what we can’t see. * God doesn’t give you His destiny until He has your heart. Discussion Questions:1. God’s affection for us is often demonstrated by developing us through difficulty. Where have you seen this in your life? What is a time in your life that you felt like you were being attacked by God, but were able to look back on that time and see that God was doing a greater work in you? 2. You’re Not NormalSeptember 10th, 2023NOTESTitle: Act Like an OwnerJohn 1:1-5, 14Key Points:

  • Jesus is the center of God’s story.
  • Jesus shows us you do not work your way to God, but God works his way to you.
  • If God makes his way toward you, then you need to make your way towards others.

Discussion Questions:

  • Thinking back about the chairs, how did you relate or not relate to the example of how we view God?
  • What have been ways you have seen God work his way to you? What impact did that make in your life? How has that changed your perspective of hope?
  • Brad says that one invite can change a life. Who are you wanting to invite to church and why? What are the potential things that can change in their life if they sense God is pursuing them?

Background Information:

This week’s sermon is taken from the Gospel of John. There are four gospels in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each one is an account of the life of Jesus. While the first three are very similar to each other, John has some unique characteristics. He was one of his disciples, was formally a fisherman, and people believe his account was written before the other three.

At the time he wrote it, there were many that believed in the creation of the world, but not everyone believed the same thing of how it was created. John links one word “logos” between two people. It was the word he used to describe Jesus. But it had many meanings back then. It meant “the word” and “reason.” The beauty of John chapter 1 was the author connected Jesus to all people by explaining it in a way that everyone (Jew or Greek) could understand.

Naughty By NatureMay 28, 2023NOTESTitle: Naughty By Nature

Romans 1Romans 10:14-15Psalm 12:2Key Points:

  • Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.
  • We gather each week so that we don’t become weak.
  • Gossip suppresses the truth.
  • Validate publicly what you admire privately.
  • Do not trade for a lie what could be life-giving.

Summary of Romans 1-4 (VIDEO)

Summary of Romans 5-16 (VIDEO)

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • This weekend, Brad is talking about gossip and how it suppresses the truth. Think about a time when someone you know has suppressed a truth about you. How did that work out? What did you learn about them?
  • Now discuss a time when you did that to someone else. What negative consequences came from your actions? What did you learn about yourself in that moment?
  • Watch the first video link in the notes (above) and answer the following : If we understand that the first half of the book of Romans was addressing the Jewish people, how does that change our understanding of Romans 1:28?
  • What are some things the Jewish people had taken for granted in the early days of the church? How does that relate to Christians today? How can we learn from that Scripture if it is talking about “religious people” of that day?
  • How are we, Be Hope Church, called to something more? Do we live up to that calling? If so, what is it that helps us keep that standard? Watch Your MouthMay 21, 2023NOTESTitle: Watch Your MouthJohn 1:1-5Genesis 1:1-31Matthew 4:4Key Points:

  • Say it, see it : the words we say become the world we see.
  • Words received are just as powerful as words delivered.
  • To honor is to fulfill : do my words bring honor? Do they fulfill others?

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • Do your words honor and fulfill others? Where do you struggle to “watch your mouth”?
  • Can you think of a time that someone else’s words changed your life? Who was it? What did they say? What was the result?

Weak Is The New StrongMay 14, 2023NOTESTitle: Weak Is The New Strong2 Corinthians 12:7-10Judges 6:12-14Key Points:

  • We all want to have a strong faith, but we need to overcome our weakness.
  • God tells us to go in the strength that we have in Him.
  • God gives us grace to handle our difficulties each day.
  • Just as a tree has strong roots, so do we as people of God.

Small summary of the story of Gideon : Click Here

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • What do you think of when you hear the word “strong”?
  • The story in Judges teaches us that Gideon thought God had left them. What time in your life did you feel that you had lost the protection of God? How do you relate to the story of Gideon?
  • What are the places in your life that you need to depend on God’s strength? What are your thorns?

Dangerous PeopleMay 7, 2023NOTESTitle: Dangerous PeopleMatthew 17:14-20Mark 9:22-241 Thessalonians 1:3Key Points:

  • Belief is based on information, faith is built on application.
  • Dangerous people live by faith.
  • Unbelief is to skepticism as little faith is to cynicism.
  • ὀλιγόπιστος – refusal to act in response to God’s (voice) calling

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • After hearing this sermon, does anyone come to mind that might fit in this category? Who are the people that you think of and why are they jaded?
  • According to Brad, belief is what you know and faith is what you do. If you used this as a way to measure your life, what would you think about your own faith right now? What are some things you are doing that are demonstrating faith in your spiritual life?
  • One of the greatest things we say to people during hard times is to “keep showing up”. How have you seen this to be effective in your own life and in the lives of others? • Jesus wants to help us in our unbelief.
  • God is unchangeable – when He doesn’t answer our prayers in the way we wanted Him to, He is still good.

  • We don’t serve God for how we feel, we serve God for who He is!
  • When you can’t see God moving in your life, go back and remember your rain!
  • The past is a firm foundation that helps us focus on how God moves.

Live ExpectantlyMarch 12, 2023NOTESTitle: Live ExpectantlyIsaiah 64:3-5Luke 17:5-19Key Points:

  • Be Expectant : in a world that seeks control, we will live expectantly, focusing on how God moves, proclaiming victory, and believing God will do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.
  • Sometimes, we must act in faith before we see the evidence of His work.
  • The greatest way to act in faith is to give thanks before the evidence.

Becoming GenerousFebruary 26, 2023NOTESTitle: Becoming Generous

Matthew 6:19-21Romans 12:21 Timothy 6:19-20Matthew 6:33Key Points:

  • The call to be a First Church Champion means you’re not done – there are still people that need to know Jesus as their hope.
  • Jesus’ call on our lives isn’t for “less stuff”. It’s to take hold of what truly brings life – treasures in Heaven.
  • Stop living the way the WORLD thinks is best – there is a better way!
  • Generous people are not generous when they get more stuff. They are generous when they have nothing. It’s not what you do, it’s who you are!
  • Our plan is important because it shifts our perspective.

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • Where do you struggle to be generous? Finances? Time? Something else?

  • Knowledge without faith is just facts.
  • Give God your first and best.

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

  • Brad says our greatest allegiance is wherever we give our most attention. Where do you find yourself giving your greatest allegiance? What is taking the majority of your time? John 3:1-17Ezekiel 36:24-27John 19:38-42Philippians 3:14Key Points:

  • How often is your greatest hesitation with God his lack of clarity?
  • If your faith leaves you bored, you’re serving the wrong god!
  • The law is also really good of reminding us what we are not.

For Personal Journaling and/or Connect Groups:

Reflecting over your life, when has there been a time where you felt there was a lack of clarity with God? How did you work that out? With GodJanuary 1, 2023NOTESTitle: With God

Matthew 1:26-3027 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

WITH GOD

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.

With God, favor has been found—do not be afraid!

With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

TO MOVE FORWARD WITH GOD, GO WITHOUT. (or) To go with God–go without.

Matthew4:2 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights [most profound statement], he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. [I would like to make this a three part slide highlighting words as we progress. (highlight with God–make this a different color than favor and give birth)

Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. (highlight favor, with God)

Luke 1:30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. (highlight favor, with God, give birth)

The One ThingChristmas Eve 2022NOTESTitle: The One Thing That Would Change EverythingMatthew 2:1-2Isaiah 64:3-5What’s the one thing that would change everything for you in 2023? A new car? A new house? Waking up early? Reading a book a week? Letting go of the past? Or, breaking an addiction? Does Jesus and your relationship with Him make the list?

Maybe you’ve hoped that Jesus could be the one thing that changed everything…and nothing changed? Your life pretty much stayed the same and now you’re left standing with the one thing that could change something–CONTROL.

CONTROL IS EXPECTATIONS SUPERPOWER. However, when our ability to control doesn’t meet our expectations we lend ourselves to “disappointment, frustration, sadness, confusion, worry, stress, exhaustion from overworking, cynicism, fear, anger, the list goes on. Even worse, unmet expectations lead to resentment and disillusionment – resentment towards ourselves, others, and resentment towards God. We begin to see our Loving Father as the one who withheld or denied our happiness instead of the One who is working all things for our good.”

BE EXPECTANT: In world that seeks control we live expectantly; Focusing on how God moves, proclaiming victory, and believing God will do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine. (Isaiah 64:3-5)

For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you. 4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. 5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved?

Want an EXPECTANT basketball but won’t be here in person? Click HERE so we can mail you one!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONSAs you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you.Questions for Individuals/Connect Groups: This week Pastor Kiesha is talking to us about proclamations. She gives us the scripture Luke 4: 14-21. What is something that stands out to you in this scripture? * Pastor Kiesha talks about proclamations and how words have power. These words that Jesus was speaking had very specific power. Much like a back story for a super hero, the back story was that the people had been waiting for their own rescuer. The words he used were all about his purpose. He was stating what kind of leader he would be. The only problem was the people wanted a military leader and got angry over his words. Which phrase do you think is most important for you? * When have there been times in your life that you had someone speak words over you that have been hurtful or helpful? How did you handle that? Pastor Kiesha has spoken these words over you for this year. What do you think about the Lord’s favor? What do you think that looks like for you? How will you choose to trust God in the midst of this next year? Questions for Families: What is something you learned about today in children’s church? * What was a fun game you played in children’s church? What was the story about in church? MADE FOR MOREFebruary 6, 2022NOTESTitle: Made for More Ephesians 3:20 4 Reasons why we settle:

  1. We settle because we’re tired of waiting.

  2. We settle because we don’t believe we deserve better.

  3. We settle because we feel pressure.

  4. We settle for safe.

What we were made for:

1. We were made for relationship.

Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, all these things will be given to you as well.”

2. We were made for freedom.

Galatians 5:1, “it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Romans 8:1-2, “there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Sprit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

3. We were made for purpose.

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

4. We were made for impact.

John 10:10, “The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may life, and have it to the full.”

Esther exited fasting and entered freedom.

Daniel exited fasting and entered fortitude.

Ezra exited fasting and entered focus.

Paul exited fasting and entered his future.

Jesus exited fasting and entered fulfillment.

3 Thing to change to Be Bold:

  1. Change your path

  2. Change your practice

  3. Change your filter

GROUP DISCUSSIONAs you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you. Questions for Reflection: * What does it mean to live into boldness? What are some ways that living a life of faith requires us to be bold? * What usually stops us from being bold? Where does uncertainty fit into boldness? * Read through Acts 4:31. What stands out to you from this verse?

NEW PROMISE, SAME PREFERENCEJanuary 23, 2022NOTESTitle: New Promise, Same Preference 2 Chronicles 25:5-8 Luke 5:33-39, Matthew 21:31-32

The Old is Good Enough (Luke 5:39) – https://escapetoreality.org/2017/12/07/the-old-is-good-enough-luke-5v39/

Isaiah 43:19, 2 Corinthians 5:17

The thing that is keeping you from being faithful is often what is familiar.

We don’t experience new levels of glory because we haven’t found new levels of surrender.

Faithfulness requires flexibility.

Bold: Showing an ability to take risks.

21 Days Prayer & Fasting GROUP DISCUSSIONAs you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you. Questions for Reflection: * In our life and in our faith, we often find ourselves clinging to the familiar? Why do we do this and where have you caught this within yourself? * How do we know or recognize we are living in a season of being “fine”? * Are you more willing to follow God in your areas of strength or your weaknesses? SAME SCARS, NEW STORYJanuary 16, 2022NOTESTitle: Same Scars, New Story John 20:24-28 Temptation is the desire to do something wrong.

2 Corinthians 4:10

“The Resurrection does not annihilate the old creation, it reconfigures it.” – Russell Moore

S: Slights

C: Confusion

A: Anger

R: Resentment

S: Setbacks

Every scar has a story.

You don’t get to change the facts, but you do get to determine the story.

What was the source of doubt is now the evidence for faith.

21 Days Prayer & Fasting GROUP DISCUSSIONAs you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you. Questions for Reflection: * When we think of following Jesus, sometimes we assume the difficult moments will suddenly disappear. What is the importance of Jesus still having his scars after resurrection? * Why is our first instinct to try and hide the scars of things that have happened in our lives? What is the importance of sharing the stories of the scars? * How can you better be using your unique story to lead other people to know and understand God more?

SAME TEMPTATION, NEW STRENGTHJanuary 9, 2022NOTESTitle: Same Temptation, New Strength Luke 4:1-13 Temptation is the desire to do something wrong.

The desire of the devil is to shift your loyalty away from God.

Spiritual disciplines are spiritual warfare.

The source of Jesus’ strength wasn’t public recognition but private devotion.

Temptation is the vulnerability of your purpose, your joy, and your eternity.

When Jesus was fasting was the worst time to tempt him.

Temptation thrives when we’re ignorant of it.

You’re not in temptation where you’re dependent, only where you’re self-sufficient.

Your power is not physical strength but spiritual dependence.

When we’re close to God we learn what we still have an appetite for that we shouldn’t have a tolerance for.

Stay DesperateDecember 19, 2021NOTESTitle: Stay Desperate Mark 9:14-29 Matthew 5:6

Matthew 12:43-45

Psalm 63

It’s not about your technique, it’s about your desperation.

God’s power is limitless, but sometimes his will is mysterious.

Do not allow your questioning of the will of God allow you to begin to doubt the power of God.

Desperate has a different response.

The enemy of your faith might be you’re fine.

The struggle you face will be different from those around you, but the solution is the same.

GROUP DISCUSSIONAs you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you. Questions for Reflection: * When you hear Jesus say “Anything is possible if a person believes” in Mark 9:23, what is your first thought? Do you fully believe it or does it make you think back to times when prayers felt unanswered? * What does it look like to be desperate for God to work and move? When have you had moments within your own faith where you have prayed with desperation? * What do you need to do to build hunger within your faith?
