Have you ever stopped to consider if toxic leadership might be the root cause of your workplace burnout? This week, join me, Dr. Patrice Buckner-Jackson (PBJ), as we delve into the insidious effects of toxic leadership on our well-being at work.
In this episode titled "The Hidden Cost of Toxic Leadership: Cultivating Healthier Workplaces," we explore the damaging impact of practices like exclusionary meetings, harsh criticisms, and behaviors that foster fear and self-doubt among team members. We’ll discuss both personal experiences and observed incidents that highlight how such toxic environments can lead to significant physical and emotional tolls on employees.
Why does feedback sometimes feel like an attack? We’ll dig into the nuances of toxic behaviors, including gaslighting and manipulation, which can suppress individual brilliance and hinder collective progress. Even leaders with a seemingly kind demeanor can be harmful if their actions are driven by unchecked ambitions.
We also tackle the lack of transparency and inclusive decision-making in leadership, examining how withholding information and excluding frontline workers can poison workplace atmospheres, stifling innovation and growth. Drawing from Amy Edmondson’s research, we underscore the importance of creating environments where honesty and creativity are not just permitted but encouraged.

Spotting the Signs and Taking Action
Hey Friend,
Are you feeling swamped and starting to wonder if burnout is creeping into your life? In today’s episode titled "Are You Burning Out?", we're going to break down the slow, often unrecognized progression of burnout, which too many of us might write off as just part of 'adulting.'
I’ll share compelling insights from a recent workshop with professional women in higher education, where we tackled the myths around burnout. It’s not just an abrupt breakdown; it’s a gradual process that starts quietly but can overwhelm us if left unchecked.
We’ll explore the different stages of burnout together. Starting with the 'surviving' stage—does life feel like a never-ending roller coaster to you? If you're barely getting by, you might be there. We'll talk about how to notice when you're moving into the 'overwhelmed' stage, where emotional and physical exhaustion begin to take a heavy toll.
This episode is your wake-up call, affirming your feelings and urging you to engage in the HeartWork needed not just to survive, but to truly thrive.
We also dive deep into the specific challenges of burnout among women, sharing personal stories and actionable steps towards recovery. Plus, you'll hear about the resources available through our book and the HeartWork community (www.heartworkcommunity.com), where professional women of faith find support in overcoming burnout.
Remember, recovery isn’t just a possibility—it’s your right. You are powerful, significant, and brilliant. Join us on this journey to reclaim the vibrant, promising future you deserve.

Hey Friend,
Have you ever wondered if our work environments are stripping away our humanity, leaving us feeling like mere cogs in a machine? This week, we’re diving into how our work environments might be peeling away our humanity, and what we can do to bring heart back into our professional lives. Join me as we explore how to make our workplaces more humane and connected.
I'll share a personal story about dealing with institutional consolidation —an event that rocked our emotional foundations. It’s a powerful example of why we need to manage change with more heart and understanding.
We're also going to unpack emotional intelligence (EQ) and its crucial role in navigating workplace changes. Despite the buzz around EQ, it often stops short of encouraging us to actually express our emotions. We'll dissect the four pillars of EQ: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, and challenge the status quo of HR and leadership that often pushes us to keep a positive face on things, no matter what.
In the final part of our episode, we stress the importance of creating spaces at work where it's safe to express and handle emotions. I’ll share insights from my own experiences as a leader trying to meet the emotional needs of my team. We'll discuss why it's vital for leaders to really listen and provide support, rather than just trying to fix things.
Let's rethink how we handle emotions in the workplace together. You are powerful, significant, and loved, and your emotional well-being at work matters immensely.
It’s time we all felt a little more understood and a lot more valued.

Hey Friend,
This week's episode, titled "Rejecting the Notion of 'Fine'," is especially close to my heart. It’s about confronting those moments when "I'm fine" doesn't even begin to cover what you’re truly feeling.
In this episode, I share an experience of when I endured recurring dreams of my late grandparents, Ozella and Bill, which made me realize just how much unprocessed grief I was carrying. This episode is my open diary, sharing a poignant journey of emotional discovery and healing. By setting intentions and navigating the murky waters of grief, I found unexpected strength—and I hope my story can shine a light for anyone walking the challenging path of loss and recovery.
We often hide behind the phrase "I'm fine," using it as a shield against the world. It’s a mask that keeps our true emotions at bay, conditioned by a society that often values intellectualization over heartfelt connection. This episode challenges us to embrace emotional honesty. By acknowledging and expressing our true feelings, we can ease the burden of burnout and step into a more authentic life.
Rejecting 'fine' means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, to open up, and to truly feel—even if that means letting the tears flow. This isn’t just about recognizing our emotions; it’s about reconnecting with the very core of our being.
Join me as we peel back the layers of emotional restraint and celebrate our rich, human experiences. It's in embracing our deepest feelings that we find the essence of our humanity and the real freedom of emotional truth.
Looking forward to sharing this heartfelt journey with you.

Hey Friend,
This week’s episode, "Get Out of Your Head," is a heartfelt invitation to reconnect with something we often sideline—our emotions. As someone who has navigated the rocky terrains of financial stress and emotional burnout, I've realized that understanding isn't just about what we know; it's about connecting with how we feel.
Join me as I share my personal journey and the universal struggle that many of us face, often in silence. With insights from Dr. Anita Phillips and her profound work "The Garden Within," we dive deep into the emotional undercurrents that steer our lives. We’ll explore the anxiety, shame, and feelings of abandonment that can influence our financial decisions, underscoring the immense power of vulnerability.
This isn't just a chat about finances—it's about rediscovering ourselves. Hey Friend,
This episode, titled "Make the Adjustment," is a deep dive into the thoughts, ideas, standards, definitions, and expectations that have been handed down to us through family, work, and religion. We're going to unpack these elements, one by one, to see what's serving us and what's holding us back.
Drawing inspiration from the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the strong women in my lineage—Big Mama, Granny, and Grandma Ozella—I explore how their experiences have filled my own backpack, not just with challenges but with immense strength. Their stories, combined with poignant insights from Kobe Campbell’s "Why Am I Like This?", help us understand the silent inheritances that shape our lives.
In today’s episode, we’re not just aiming to prevent burnout; we’re on a mission to uncover and challenge the narratives that live within us. This journey is about more than understanding—it’s about transformative healing.
I’ll also share a personal story about an encounter with a rigid leader, which mirrors the restrictive scenarios many of us face in today’s professional environments. This is our clarion call to liberate ourselves from the 'invisible backpack' of beliefs and definitions imposed upon us, and to embrace our true identities.
Join me as we reexamine the spiritual dimensions of our lives, aligning them with a profound understanding of our inherent worth and the enveloping love that has been passed down through generations. It’s time to make the adjustment, together.
Love Always,

Brace yourself for a profound conversation with the dynamic Dr. Kara Kennebrew, the Dean of Student Rights and Responsibilities who is committed to restoring students through their missteps, and shaping them into ethically engaged citizens. Our dialogue peels back the layers of authentic conversation with students, underlining the role of conduct officers as educators first. We dive into this unchartered territory and unravel how this approach has the power to transform students' lives in ways like no other.
Our conversation doesn't stop there. Together with Dr. K, we delve into the essentiality of a strong support system and the art of reclaiming our "think time". The importance of having a sounding board to share your experiences and a shoulder to lean on in challenging times is highlighted. We also stress the significance of practicing positive self-talk, a powerful tool that helps process our thoughts and emotions, fostering mental clarity and emotional well-being.
With the pressures of work and family, it's easy to forget about self-care. But the truth is, it's not a luxury, it's a necessity. Especially for women juggling multiple roles. Having a therapist or counselor as part of your personal care team can be a game-changer, and downtime is not something to be postponed for the summer months. It's crucial to take regular breaks to rejuvenate and recharge. Wrapping up our enriching conversation, we celebrate Dr. Kennebrew's achievements, affirming the importance of sharing these insights with educators. Welcome to Disrupting Burnout - a podcast where we beat burnout so that you can love your career again!
Burnout impacts every area of our lives and after engaging with people in healthcare, education, counselors and even ministers, I’ve found that a majority of them have experienced what I call, “The Spiral of Burnout.”
The spiral of burnout consists of three phases: Surviving, Overwhelm and Burnout.
This week on Episode 73 of Disrupting Burnout, I dive deeper into each of these phases and share how to notice the signs of burnout so that you can avoid it in both your personal and professional life.

"I felt this requirement to be all things to all people. But I didn't understand what the foundation of that was. I didn't understand where that came from, or why I felt that way. Through counseling, I learned where it came from. I was able to pinpoint it because I was able to put my finger on it so I can address it right. I can decide how I want to show love and how love flows freely from me. Not in a way that is so taxing--so taxing that it's taking me so far under that I'm drowning. I don't want to drown because of my love.
I want to love with joy, I want to love with freedom, I want to love from a place that's pure." ~ PBJ

"There's nothing that we can do to recover until we identify the damage. So take some notes, from your body, from your mind, from your heart, from your spirit, and from your relationships. Take some notes on what has changed, what is broken, what is damaged and what needs attention. If you're determined to continue to serve from the heart, you have to stop for a moment and assess the damage. "~ PBJ

"You can reset again! Do we prefer to give a proper yes and a proper no from the beginning? Absolutely. But if you haven't and you've given too many yeses, it's okay for you to go back and say I messed up. I made a mistake. I should have said no. I should have made space for somebody else to do this, but I cannot do it. Will people feel some kind of way? They MIGHT. But will they still feel some kind of way if you can't do it well? They WILL."~ PBJ

"It's so interesting being a millennial. I think we get such a bad rap in so many different ways in terms of being lazy, undriven, don't want to work, don't have a work ethic, and are willing to fall all over the place. But at the end of the day, in my opinion, I think it has a lot to do with having MEANING IN WHAT WE DO. In my opinion, I think that Millennials are very driven for something that has meaning, something that is greater than ourselves, and we want to align ourselves with that. So if we're going to align ourselves with a job, we want to make sure that the job has impact and is something that also touches our mission and our core values. " ~Janessa Dunn

" So those first few months to years, I spent a lot of time being thrown into the ocean of grief. And the waves come and I've never been taught to surf. So I'm surfing the wave of grief and the next thing you know, it knocks me down. I'm trying to grasp and come up for air and catch my breath, but I feel like I'm drowning. I'm suffocating. I'm going down, down, down, down. And luckily, you know, because of Christ, there's like this little floaty that comes along and I'm able to catch it and come back up for air. But as time progresses, I'm learning to surf the wave. That's like anything. You learn to navigate it. I learn to see those waves coming. I'm learning to surf it better. " ~Jonquette Sanders-White

In this episode of the Heart Work with PBJ, Dr. Patrice Buckner Jackson had a candid conversation with Ashley James about compassion fatigue, boundaries, and burnout. We will share only a portion of the conversation. Follow Ashley on Instagram to hear to full conversation.
Ashley James is a purpose-chaser by nature who founded the Own Your Authenticity brand. As a registered nurse, she was constantly pouring into her patients, which brought her fulfillment, but deep down she knew she wanted more. It wasn’t until the stillness of the coronavirus pandemic which put her into a silent season, that she realized that her purpose was deeply rooted inside of her. Soon thereafter she realized that her side hustle was leading her down a path of burnout and not purpose. Her brand’s mission is to help other women step out of their own way, and on faith, so they can own their authenticity, and thrive purposefully in every season.

Suzette Randolph Vearnon is an author, speaker, life coach and relationship solutionist with one resounding message: You Are Enough. Her motivation to empower others was first evidenced at the tender age of 7 when she first taught her younger sister to play the piano. Since then, it has evolved into her own patented transformational methodology called the MusicMath® Approach to Dating and Relating that focuses on 3 critical factors of enoughness: your voice, your value and your vision. By amplifying these factors, Suzette
helps high achieving women and a few cool men get clear about what makes them enough; thereby ending the suffering that comes from not knowing.

Welcome to the Heart Work with PBJ podcast where we are disrupting cycles of burnout for people who do their work from the heart. This community was created for heart workers, those who do your work because you are called to it. You just want to serve your purpose well. Serving in this way comes with a cost. Maybe you have experienced loss due to the way you serve others. This is a place where you will be renewed and equipped to do the work you are called to do while also living the life you desire.
There is a new episode every Wednesday. Be sure to subscribe, download, and leave a rating.
I am so glad you are here.
*This podcast started as the Love Always, PBJ podcast focused on Millennials. The Heart Work focus begins with episode 16.
