This week, we have a special guest, Mary Alonso from Nigeria, who has been making significant strides in her community.
Mary is a US giver and the co-founder of Global Eco Mentors Initiative, an organization promoting environmental and climate literacy, as well as sustainable production and consumption. She is also the founder of Alolo 365, a sustainable fashion business that upcycles textile waste into new garments and accessories.
Mary's journey into this work is inspiring. Growing up, she witnessed the struggles of many young girls in her community who lacked the educational opportunities she had. Her experiences with her father's work in rural schools and the challenges faced by her friend motivated her to make a difference. Today, Mary is dedicated to empowering young girls and youth through training and mentorship, providing them with the skills andopportunities to create a better future for themselves.
Mary's work is not just about numbers; she focuses on transforming the lives of 10 young girls each year, ensuring they receive the best training and support. Her initiatives extend beyond her immediate community, reaching out to various rural areas and collaborating with other organizations to maximize impact. In 2024, Mary plans to continue her training programs, expand her outreach, and work closely with persons with disabilities to provide them with the skills and support they need to thrive.

To many, Rotaract remains shrouded in mystery, but it serves as a beacon for youth striving to create change in their communities. Often seen as a junior iteration of Rotary, Rotaract inspires youth to impact communities with the vision of "service above self."
In this episode, we present the story of Rotaractor Michael Ekerin, whose journey through Rotaract leadership in District 9112 has been transformative. Initially indifferent to Rotaract, Michael's path paints a compelling picture of growth and impact within the communities he has served.
Ascending through various roles within his club, Michael's appreciation for Rotaract crystallized during his tenure as vice president of the multi-award-winning club with a rich history. Here, he discovered his leadership ability and eventually ran for the presidency.
Michael's tenure has been marked by tangible acts of generosity and empowerment, from providing sewing machines to boost economic sustainability to ensuring that underprivileged students receive essential resources like stationery and school furniture. Meet Satina Harry Okoi, a dynamic youth committed to reshaping the future of leadership in Africa. With six years of hands-on experience in community development, Satina identified a crucial gap in African leadershipand took action by founding the Paragon Leadership Initiative.
Motivated by her observations of underprepared leaders assuming roles without adequate training, Satina launched the Paragon Leadership Initiative in 2018. Starting with school prefects, she delivers comprehensive training and support in governance, leadership, and personal development. Despite facing initial resource constraints, Satina rallied friends to volunteer and facilitate sessions.
Today, the impact of the Paragon Leadership Initiative spans three states, empowering young leaders with indispensable skills and nurturing their growth in character and capacity. Through the initiative, these emerging leaders not only refine their abilities but also spearhead community projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

His upbringing also taught him firsthand the destructive impact of disunity, fueling his commitment to fostering peace. Now, he collaborates with the government to integrate peacebuilding principles into policies and structures, ensuring a holistic approach from the ground up.
Through Peace Hub de The Gambia, Bakary has equipped youth stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the national peace agenda. He firmly believes that every young person should see themselves as integral to the peace process, despite thechallenges encountered along the way. For Bakary, overcoming these obstacles is made possible through collective effort and collaboration.

At just twenty three years old, Rama serves as theSpecial Assistant to the CEO at Epic Africa, a pan-African NGO based in Dakar, focusing on strengthening philanthropy among CSOs in West Africa. Rama'spassion for philanthropy has placed her in the spotlight for several years. She also leads Giving Tuesday Senegal and has a soft spot for creativity and creativeminds.
Recognizing a prevalent challenge faced by women in Senegal and West Africa, Rama founded Whistle Blower, an association dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) in the region.
Inspired by the UN's 16 Days of Activism against GBV in 2021, Rama got the Initiative running, aiming to protect women and create a conducive environmentfor them to thrive in Africa.
Driven by her desire to rewrite the narrative for women in her community, Rama's work with Whistle Blowers isfueled by a deep sense of responsibility towards our sisters and mothers. For instance, some stories are about dealing with poverty and single motherhood; Others are about struggles to succeed in male-dominated professions.
In Still's analysis, the focus is on how women storytellers use a variety of narrative strategies - including metaphor,allusion and the ingeniously imagined "revelatory past" - the better to convey the symbolic import of their dynamic, evolving network of healers to their listeners. By representing this network not as a closed community, but as a proliferating, diversifying web - and, most important, as a narrative process - the women's stories themselves become a vital, generative function of thehealing work they celebrate.
These stories celebrate the spiritual, therapeutic aspects of women's and gender studies and the person-centeredapproach, as researchers and scholars engage with people who find courage and insight in their daily experiences.

There’s still a lack of understanding about what happens when a teenager starts to menstruate. Lack and shortage of menstrual education and the stigma attached to periods means girls don’t feel comfortable talking about it with their parents, teachers, or even peers. Hope Nankunda has for the past seven years spearheaded the campaign to support teenagers through school and to demystify the mythssurrounding menstruation.
Hope Nankunda is a mother, teacher, counselor, and founder of Raising Teenagers (RTU), and CentralRegion Coordinator at Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. Hope tells the relentless story of how she found purpose in raising teenagers by attending to their most pressing psychological needs without leaving parents and the communities out of the conversation.
Using hiking as a fundraising and advocacy tool, Hope has spearheaded the hike of Muhabura, Wanale, Karangura, Moroto, Buyende, and Sabinyo to mobilize sanitarytowels for teenage girls in the areas where the hikes are undertaken. Her work of advocating for menstrual hygiene spans different parts of Uganda cognizant of the need to get more people involved in this campaign.

In the month of July and August, residents of Eastern Uganda had the gut-wrenching experience of losing loved ones, their homes, livestock and livelihoods because of floods from heavy rains.
Back in the heart of a very hyper-urban Kampala, every downpour is a waterlogged reminder of the essence of wetlands which we do not see that much of anymore.
Karamoja on the other hand has taken a direct hit from the food insecurity that comes with climate change. These few scenarios are a drop in the ocean of the impact of climate change. What we thought was a far-off occurrence is a present-crisis that we need to address. Who is going to address it if we don’t? Who is going to change if we won’t?

Lena Godfrey Lokwang, a project specialist in the Kaabong district and a creative entrepreneur, discusses how God multiplies the virtue of generosity by providing mankind with occasions to accept blessings in this episode. The Lena who is now the proud father of eight children (four boys and six girls) describes the path that lead him to become a priest and how he has served his community from many different perspectives. In his view, helping others without expecting anything in return is the surest way to reap the rewards of your work. "Blessed is the hand that gives more than the hand that receives," he quotes Lucky Dube as saying. According to Lena, he believes that kindness begins where you are and giving begins with your neighbor.

In Episode 5 of season 9 of the comm-UNITY! Podcast series, courtesy of CivSource Africa. Nabou Fall, a cretaive entrepreneur, coach and author committed to Africa, from Senegal speaks to us about her work in the incubation and acceleration of artists by equipping them with the tools to become artistically viable entrepreneurs. She opens up about her work with artists to develop a long-term business plans centered on the value chain, which facilitates the sale of artwork and increases the artists' global profile.
She also discusses how talent alone isn't enough to make it as a successful artist-entrepreneur; visibility is essential. Nabou encourages visibility of artists in areas where their work can be viewed and appreciated by kindred members of their community. She continues to explain that investors and consumers belonging to the same "tribe" all have similar values and goals in life. The most valuable asset is the ability to discuss creative ideas with people who share one's values.
Nabou then encourages African artists to continue sharing our true narratives. That way, not only will we be in charge of the story, but these tales will live on in our culture for quite some time as they are passed down from generation to generation.
Personal branding is one of her main focuses as a coach; she says, "I try to do for others what I have done for myself." Nabou is convinced that all artists and creatives should have access to a space where they can both give back to their local community and make a living from their work.

A training and coaching academy in leadership and transformative communication, Nabou Fall Akademy was founded by Nabou Fall, CEO of Vizeo since 2007. Vizeo is an ad agency with offices in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ivory Coast, and Mali that specializes in strategic advertising and public relations for multinational corporations throughout the continent of Africa. To begin, she worked with MTN in Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a board member for 15 years before rising to the positions of director of sales and marketing, vice president of corporate strategy, and finally president.
Because of her dedication to the empowerment of her fellow African women, Nabou Fall is a sought-after public speaker and a well-known personal development coach. She has spoken at TEDx and is an author and mentor for a number of women's empowerment NGOs. The president of Wimnet, WICCote-d'Ivoire(Women Investment Club) and co-founder of Impact Hub Cote-d'Ivoire, she holds a degree in Computer Science, an MBA from ISG Paris, and an engineering degree from the École Supérieure de Génie Informatique de Paris with a focus on information systems and networks.
In addition, she has a Harvard Business School diploma in leadership, an IOD London certificate in Boardroom Africa delivery, and certificates from idep and ECA for women investors. An ICF Executive Coach and a Certified Emotional Intelligence Practitioner, she is a Certified Personal Branding Strategist (CPBS). Loupa describes in this episode how the growth of the Manyatta institutions has led in a shift in emphasis from collective to individual acts of kindness. And how preserving the Kraal as communal property encourages a sense of belonging and sharing among members of the community. When asked what it means to give in the Karamojong Pastoral communities, he says it means keeping what is given secure until it is time to pass it on to another member within the community. Young shepherds who volunteer to care for the community's herd often receive gifts of young animals, which they are expected to raise till adulthood before keeping them as their own, as a sign of appreciation from the community's elders. Furthermore, he speaks to us about his photographic Endeavor with the Kuonyesha Art Fund 2021 cohort, during which he produced a pastoral photo book depicting the tales and lives of the Karamojong pastoral communities. This is his way of giving back to the community that raised him, a gift of inspiration to the next generation.

In this episode, we speak with Raul Rugamba, the CEO of Rwanda's Hobe Agency, who has more than ten years of experience in the African cultural and creative industry. He also founded Africa in Colors, a pan-African business effort devoted to collaborating with varied creative and innovative organizations in the development and production of African content, as well as promoting and developing the African creative industry ecosystem. Raul tells us about what it means to "do things differently" and about his own experiences as a creative entrepreneur. He describes how he navigates cultural and creative settings using technology and education to create homegrown solutions that enable the creation of original African products while also ensuring the sustainability and survival of art professionals. Raul's objective is to improve the value of artists, to accompany them, and, eventually, to increase the sector's contribution to the continent's growth while also creating jobs.

According to Nabaggala Maximilian Lilian, a dancer, model, creative artist, and choreographer of #FADED who is also Kuonyesha Art Fund partner 2021, the definition of generosity is the act of giving up a little bit of oneself without the expectation of receiving anything in return. According to her, giving is defined as carrying out an essential task that a person would perform voluntarily rather than being compelled to do so.
In this episode, we embark on a journey to discover how her parents instilled a sense of generosity in her at a young age. The impression and busyness that came with having a home in downtown Kampala, as well as what that meant to relatives who came to visit from their home village, was too much for them to handle. Nabaggala and her siblings were taught how to care for their visitors, making her experience of generosity more personal.
According to Nabaggala, every one of her birthdays is a chance for her to give back to the community. She is of the opinion that giving is about sacrificing your best in the expectation that the recipient will regard it as an equally meaningful gesture. She emphasizes how important it is to share what one loves with others.
She donates her time to a number of different community outreach programs, where she puts her artistic ability and talent to good use. Nabaggala finds that giving to her is a form of rejuvenation, and that it enables her to give from a cup that is full to the brim rather than one that is empty.
Giving is a very important concept to Nabaggala; in fact, the act of giving is what gives her art new life!

Sire Simon Loduk is a fashion designer by profession and a Kuonyesha Art Fund 2021 partner. In episode 1, season 9 of the comm-UNITY! Podcast series, he discusses how fashion changed his life and inspired him to give back to his community. Simon attributes his entire success to his community, particularly the encouragement to return to and further his education at a technical institute for fashion design.
He compares his product's popularity in his community to rats that have smelt river fish. He says they absolutely adore his products and that he is responsible for launching the majority of Kaabong's fashion designers' careers. In this episode, Simon gushes about his love for his community and their unwavering support for his career. He says this is one of the reasons he is always giving back through various skill training projects so that other people can get the experience he would not have gotten if his community had not consistently and timely supported him.
Sharing is caring for Simon, and his faith remains a strong foundation for him when it comes to the principles he follows when it comes to giving. He says;
"Generosity is the heart of God, not a human heart." If you put on a man's heart, you can never be generous."

In this episode, we follow Marion Natukunda, current president elect of Rotary Club of Kiwatule, through her personal journey of cultivating a generous spirit. Marion currently works for the Ministry of Health and has served in Rotary for the last ten years. It was her mother's battle with polio that inspired her to get involved in charitable endeavors that took her on a journey of selflessness generosity. She sees Rotary as an avenue to give with no regrets, and she encourages others to do the same. Marion is always on the lookout for those in need, and she believes that generosity is a concept that everyone should be aware of.

Generosity comes in many forms, including the donation of time, resources, goods, and, of course, treasure. Whatever is given, generosity is ingrained in our blood in Africa; it is our legacy, how we express ourselves, and our way of life. Francis Xavier Sentamu, former District Governor D9211 (Uganda and Tanzania) and of Rotary Club of Kiwatule, speaks to us in this episode about generosity in action, how it is more than just an outward behavior, but about caring for one another and looking out for one another, particularly in the African context.
According to Francis, generosity consists of a person's underlying thoughts, feelings, and motivations to give. It is more than just a monetary expression of generosity; it is the use of classifications, skills, and professions and the use of time to be fully part of the solution, making it easier to reach out to the community. Francis speaks fondly of ‘TRUST’ virtue within Rotary as a currency and unseen component in generosity that keeps the giving flowing. His philanthropic journey is a seed that he has seen multiply a thousand-fold to demonstrate Rotary's impact in transforming communities.
The truth is that generosity is a practice that can be learned. It's something you can work on over time in your life. It's just like any other habit. Even better, being generous provides a wealth of opportunities for learning about yourself, others, your community, and the world at large.
There is no such thing as a "one size fits all" solution. This is what happened to Chris Kayongo, Chair of the Service Projects Committee of the Rotary Club of Ssese Islands, one of Uganda's oldest Rotary clubs, founded in 1991 and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
With his membership in this club, Chris has found the perfect outlet for his generosity. It allowed him to use his time and resources to make a difference in his community as an individual. From medical outreaches to the establishment of health centers, the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Islands, which has 97 active members, is dedicated to generosity driven by the community and the needs of the community. Working with the community when generosity is involved is a true testament to ensuring long-term impactful change.
Chris speaks of time and individuals as the driving forces behind generosity and that people have to work together to actualize the change they want to see. It begings with ‘YOU’ and ‘I’.
Harnessing the power of collective giving in Rotary Club Kiwatule, often transitions into giving circles, bringing people together to focus on community needs and community-driven solutions. When like-minded givers come together to discuss community needs and give of their treasure, time, and talent, a giving circle is born- ‘Philanthropy with the Spirit of Ubuntu’. Robert Kiggundu former President of Rotary Club Kiwantule walks us through his personal and clubs' journey of philanthropy in an Afrocentric space that tells a story of who we are a people and how the message is spread to others that he and club get to interact with. He calls on every Ugandan that is able to give to give and that leveraging of vocations to give really does make a difference.
Generosity spreads like wildfire. What comes naturally to us is partnering with one another, working together, and displaying a great deal of compassion and generosity. Our genetic forefathers lived for hundreds of thousands of years because they learnt to collaborate and help one another. They prospered because they cared when someone was hurt and supported one another. We are here today because they discovered that being generous was the greatest way for a species to flourish.
In this episode, Edwin Nuwagaba Babimpa reminds us that a giving heart is one that is deeply rooted in community and faith. He highlights how Kabale rotary club members consistently bring to the table their distinct particular qualifications bestowed by God to serve the community, multiplying generosity.
Being present is a powerful expression of support for generosity and gratitude. In this episode, Winfred reminds us that being fully present becomes a gift to ourselves and others we touch in our life. According to an old Chinese wisdom saying, when we are genuinely present, we 'give life to life' when we give. We may be touched when we give of ourselves, time, and treasure to others, and in touching and being touched, we progress towards less reactive, more responsive, fresh, and intimate forms of being and generosity.
In Winfred's instance, the support of family members went a long way in allowing her to start and continue the road of generosity with Rotary Club Kampala. She details how Rotary is a family away from one's first family — A Family of Generous Givers! And how Openness, Diversity, and Inclusiveness are crucial when it comes to ageless giving in Kampala Rotary Club (The Arch).
In this episode, Prossy Arima takes us on yet another journey of giving reaching the right people, making the impossible possible, and how Rotary Club Arua is changing lives via education, economic empowerment, and nutrition projects through local initiatives. Arima continues by emphasizing the need of trust in the success of collective generosity. It leads to increased trust in trusted persons or organizations, as well as a readiness to act on such trust. The ultimate goal of philanthropy is to catalyze action, trust is an important pre-condition.
As we begin Season 8 of our Comm-UNITY! podcast series, we'll be looking at yet another exceptional group of individuals; ‘Rotary People of Action’. They will help us in better understanding Rotary's generous giving culture and their varied community efforts. This ethos has been functional in Uganda and seen the transformation of several communities receiving access to water, proper sanitation and hygiene, basic health care and education.
During Season 8, we shall hear from members of Rotary clubs in Uganda as they share their giving story as individuals, as club members and as members of this 110-year-old giving movement. Join us to hear inspirational stories about Ugandans’ contributions to Rotary’s role in eradicating polio from the face of the earth, about the Rotary Uganda Gift of Life program that enabled open heart surgeries for children, about a Rotary Cancer ward at Nsambya Hospital that provides world class specialized care to cancer patients, the Rotary Uganda Blood Bank at Mengo hospital and so many other amazing works, all emanating from the giving hearts of Ugandans and other Rotarians across the world.

In 2021 Open Spaces (a youth development organisation in Uganda), led by founder Wakibu Bunya, hosted a philanthropy symposium with the aim of amplifying stories of young people giving with the hopes of inspiring other young people.
Wakibu Bunya joins us in this episode and shares with us from experience that the idea that young people don't/can't give is a stereotype we need to break. In a country where the youth make up the majority of the population they need to be empowered and motivated to give, and this is part of the work that Open Spaces is doing.
In the same way that there are many ways to show generosity, we see through the eyes of our guest this episode that that there are also many different areas of our community that can benefit from philanthropy in different ways. Caroline Owashaba is team leader and co-founder at Action for Youth Development Uganda and she shares with us various initiatives that she has mobilized and led teams in, relating to health, education, climate change and women’s health.
Sophie Carol Wayne, an unapologetic queer feminist and human rights defender is our guest on this episode. As founder of Queer Women Leaders Uganda she shares with us some of the work she is doing within her community and the values she seeks to uphold as a leader advocating for generosity and unity across leadership structures.
Leadership is not just about the initiatives you start, but the grace that you extend to the teams that you lead and the communities you serve. It involves qualities of humility, empathy and kindness, especially when it comes to the sensitive work of giving back. Joanah Atukunda, Founder of Uplift Slum Africa And CEO at The League of Young Professionals Uganda reminds us of this as we discuss some of the initiatives that both organisations are engaged in.
Mutoni Winnie Jessica's (Team Leader - Archiving: Motor Vehicle Registration) are dipped in humour and wisdom. In this episode we are drawn to the importance of building community with the people we lead and do life with, as a means to encouraging and cultivating a culture of generosity. Communion with one another helps us understand each other's needs and perspectives, allowing us to care for and give to each other in intentional ways.
Olivia Mugabe, Founder and CEO of The Sisterhood, started the initiative with a group of friends with the aim to be more intentional about giving amongst themselves and to their various communities. We see through our conversation how mobilising giving doesn't have to be on a huge corporate scale, there is power in the commitment and dedication of even small groups of givers. And building trust with your community of givers goes a long way.
Energetic and passionate about her role as a leader, Amongin Prisca Nangiro joins us in this episode as we delve into two of the communities she leads (the National Youth Council and the Youth Ministry at Miracle Center). Prisca moves in the awareness that she is blessed to be a blessing and it is insightful to hear the ways that she lobbies those around her to practice generosity amongst themselves and outside of their networks.
Bridget Kyalimpa, a social activist, philanthropist, and co-founder of the African Feminist Research Initiative for advocacy and development, takes us on a journey of discovery, learning about the art of giving and the benefits that come with it, as well as how leaders can lead with love and empathy while pursuing their goal of giving.

It brings with it an inherent joy that is considerably more precious than what we give to others.

Sarah Birungi Namuddu is a Team Leader at Smart Transitions, where she works on issues like as sexual and reproductive health rights, refugee safety and security, and economic empowerment for Uganda's marginalized women, youth, and children. Sarah takes us on a journey as we learn about how to expand the leadership cycle of giving. How can we make the next person's life better because of our actions?

In today's fast-paced environment, when many of us are forced to live rushed, mechanical, and demanding lives, our empathy for others appears to be fading. Topic: The role and Importance of leadership in community giving or philanthropy.
Welcome to season 7 (Seven) of the CivSource Africa comm-UNITY! Podcast. In this season, we will host conversations with different Leaders who have been part of the Mopane Leaders’ Experience Retreats, a program under the management of CivSource Africa. Mopane program is a leadership curriculum focused on wellness and wellbeing of leaders and their organizations.
Because we strongly believe that if a leader is not well, the organization or the place they serve cannot be well. The focus on leaders then becomes very critical because everything rises and falls on leadership.
Community leaders in particular, should be aware of the value of philanthropy and its role in promoting the common good. As stewards of community assets, leaders should also be familiar with actions they can take to nurture an environment that encourages philanthropic giving and the development of philanthropic resources.
For the next three months, we will host the alumni of this program to discuss the role and importance of leadership in community philanthropy or giving. The purpose will not only be to understand giving practices in communities, but to also highlight steps community leaders can take to encourage giving in their communities as we build philanthropic assets that can permit communities to help themselves.

We come to the close of Season 6 with an extraordinary young giver, Paul Onyayowun, Leader at Christian Youth Missionary Group. You'd think that after a full season we'd be used to the stories that we hear but Paul continues to surprise and inspire us as he tells us about the urban farming, photography, and videography programs that him and his team run for women and youth in Kinawataka.
You can hear in the tone of her voice as she describes why and where she gives, that to Lucia Nalugo Gloria, giving has never been complicated thing that she overthinks. It only took one more person in her life to propel her more seriously into this calling. And now, our guest this episode, is the founder of charity organisation Hope in Motion.
As CivSource Africa we are passionate about and preach the importance of community on a regular basis (It's the name of our podcast!). But what happens to those who are excluded from our communities because we gate-keep them?
We sit down with Solomon Rukundo, lawyer and philanthropist, who has been giving to prisoners through the Prison Fellowship Uganda since 2006. We talk about the journey, the wins, the challenges, the lessons and everything in-between.
When asked what partners WAY (We Are Youth) organisation has, Frank Ssejjengo, team leader of the organisation, begins to describe the very people and youth in the communities where they are working to make a difference. This is African Philanthropy.
And in this episode we delve into the ways Frank is bridging gaps including mentorship, rehabilitation, health and education for various communities of youth across Uganda. The work that WAY is doing is powerful and essential.
Our guests in this episode, co-founders of the charity organisation Young Angels Network, Gillian and Daniela are 21 and 16years old. If you find that shocking, wait until you hear how they gathered a team of fellow teenagers to raise 11 million Uganda shillings to create a solution to lack of sanitary pads and access to education for girls in Kasese.
They also share with us the challenges and hardships they've faced, but it is clear that their purpose-driven vision, wisdom at such a young age, and desire to see people smile keeps them motivated to grow in their giving.
It's the conviction and gentle assuredness with which our episode 9 guest, Bright Ntakky, speaks on the topic of generosity and community. He invites us into the world of 'Lovidex', a drive that started as a one-man ride to deliver hope, resources and medication to those in need during and after the first lockdown.
And he takes any chance to remind us that giving is a transformative gift in and of itself.
If you thought generosity and philanthropy are things of adulthood, we are here to debunk that myth! In episode 8 we host our youngest guest yet, 17year old Gino Ndiko, who has made generosity her mission at school, in her neighbourhood and in the plans she has for her future.
One of our favourite things is how much she values community and connection with those she is moved to help. She is building relationship, especially with teens her age, as she grows.
To have a need, identify that need in others and prioritise them by giving of resources and time is a special thing. This is what happened during the first lockdown, when Ivan Okoth a Type 1 diabetic chose to share his insulin and further collect and deliver essential supplies to fellow warriors across the greater Kampala region, using his bicycle.
He joins us in this episode, to tell us about how he powered the design of a distribution system for Type 1 diabetics living through the pandemic, in partnership with the Sonia Nabeta Foundation.
Aisha Ali, founder of Iprofile Foundation, Global Shaker with the World Economic Forum, and a passionate financial literacy coach joins us in episode 6.
Identifying a gap in financial literacy amongst children and refugee communities (two groups whose empowerment she deeply cares for), at 26 years old, Aisha has done extraordinary work to promote money management, saving and investment within these communities.

You can feel the burst of life and energy when this week's guest Dr. Catherine Nagadya speaks about her passion to empower girls through her foundation Girls Unstoppable UG.
Dr. Nagadya put her dream to sponsor the education of one girl from her village to the test, and has grown that vision to 1000 girls. After her own experience watching peers drop out as early as primary school, and the financial strains of education she started where she was with what she had to create a different reality for others.

Michelle Omamteker, Activist, writer and Founder of the Malengo Foundation, takes us on the journey that led her to devote her work to social inclusive development for persons with disability. Amongst other intangible needs that all humans have, which persons with disability are often excluded from.
She sheds light on the fact that African philanthropy should be multidimensional, addressing both immediate and tangible needs, alongside long term personal and systemic needs. Generosity has the power to create an inclusive society.
Joanita Anena shares her heart behind starting the Adokorach Foundation, whose goal is to make education easily accessible to children and to show these children that they are not their current situation, they are worth more.
Generosity holds space for our dreams and allows us to see them in our reality.
Giving has nothing to do with how much you have, Mathias Walwana, Programs Coordinator at Odur Foundation in Mayuge district, reminds us of this in Episode 2.
He demonstrates the ways in which banding together as a community with whatever resources you can gather, can move mountains and make an impact on those in need. The Odur Foundation has been able to run various programs and charity drives with this kind of giving, alongside the accountability and transparency that goes with it.
From donating 76 books to one school in 2014 to becoming a registered NGO that has donated 111,000 books to over 20 schools across Uganda, Brownie Ebal (CEO at Kitabu Buk Project) shows us in episode 1 that change and impact can start here with us.

It is a full circle moment in the final episode of this season, as Sarah Nekese, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Support Association Uganda (ESAU) join us to tell stories of the ways individuals living with epilepsy have stepped up to help their own.
An individual that stands out is Henry Karutokye, who realised he had epilepsy at 15. He joined ESAU in 1999, and has never looked back, going over and beyond to empower and protect those living with epilepsy and disability in general.
Madam Christine Lule aka Jjajja Wa Ba-deaf, whose impactful words are interpreted by Deborah Tibiwa, joins us in episode 11 as we discuss the challenges that those with hearing impairments face.
She has been a key player in advocating and sensitising various families and communities about the disability rights of, and the great potential that should be harnessed within those with hearing impairments.
As she retells stories of the lives and communities she has impacted, she reminds us of the importance of taking this information back to the grassroots and of prioritising breaking language barriers, as communication and community go hand in hand.
What didn't kill her, made Peninahh Mukatushabira, Board Member at Vitiligo Association of Uganda, stronger. Living with vitiligo for 15 years she has experienced stigma from all fronts including the disability community. But has chosen to channel her energy towards advocacy for positive living and sensitisation about her condition.
In episode 10 we laugh and chat about her life, her bond with her children, and the work that she does.
It is clear as we speak to Mama Alice Kisolo, Founder of SIITA, Nest Mother's Love Homes that in her perspective, no one is beyond redemption.
Having experienced neglect and discrimination herself as a child dealing with mental illness, she shares with us how she got into the work of caring for neglected and at risk children. Trusting that her calling and faith would sustain the work that she has done over the years. And that the training she has passed on will live beyond her.
"Nothing about us without us" says Hajira Kaggwa, Councillor and Coordinator at Iganga District Albinism Association. In this episode she shares with us her passion and initiative to ensure that all persons living with disability in Iganga are empowered economically, socially and politically. Breaking down what this looks like for various disability groups.
Her generosity also translates into her stewardship of her role as a leader and representative of women living with albinism. And it is evident that the work she is doing is making a difference in her community.
Joel Musana, Founder and Executive director of Foundation of Persons Affected by Dwarfism joins us in episode 7. As he gives us glimpses into his life experiences and the journey to founding FPAD-U, we see the ways in which he has lifted his community members towards independence and advocated for accessibility and respect. We see the privileges that being able-bodied affords one, and the ways in which society can better prioritise reasonable accommodation
The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Awareness Network in Uganda was built out of desire to maintain connection and support amongst mothers whose children were faced with these conditions.
Ruth Nalugya, Executive Director and Founder of the network, shares with us in this episode bits of her own journey as a mother of a child living with disability, and how that has impacted the work that the network does now. She educates us on the conditions, highlights the need to deconstruct gendered roles and shares encouraging words of wisdom.
Mr. Bugembe Dick, BOD Chairperson and founder of MADIPHA, joins us in episode 5 as we explore the intersection of persons living with disability and HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Bugembe, with personal experience, started the organization because he saw a gap in support offered to individuals living with disability and HIV/AIDS. He shares with us the journey and growth of the organisation on a mission to provide equal and timely access to information and services. As well as the courage with which he has fought discrimination and showed his peers that they can live positively and independently.
A conversation with Mr. Sejemba Fred, founder of NUDIPU and the radio program 'Ebifu Mubatema', feels very much like a history lesson filled with wisdom, experience, downfalls and triumph.
In this episode he shares with us parts of his journey that led him to Kireka Rehabilitation Center, where he developed his artistry and advocated for the rights of disabled people and improved standard of living. As well as the circumstances that led him to found NUDIPU (National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda), and to advocate for representation of disabled people in Uganda's government and parliament.
Christine Kirungi, Disability Activist and Executive Director at Uganda National Association of Cerebral Palsy (UNAC), is our guest on this episode.
She too is living with cerebral palsy but that has not stopped her from advocating for community integration, to break stigma against people with disabilities. As well as partaking in community building for the benefit of all.
Your disability is not the end of your world. This echoes through our conversation with Esther Kyozira, Program Officer at Disability Rights Fund. There is a clear intersection between her personal commitment/passion and the formal work that she does, as she herself has experienced what it is like to develop a disability later in life. Veronica Nagadya, a community psychologist, joins us as we recount, reflect on and celebrate the life of the late Ssengooba Med. The two were cousins and had a close working relationship.
Often it is assumed that persons living with disability are solely on the receiving end of generosity. But it is clear through Ssengooba Med's life, the life of an educator, advocate and mentor, that this is just not the case. He gave so much of himself to individuals and the work that he did through the Disability Rights Fund, and projects her founded such as the school Valley Side Academy.

We keep it short and sweet as we close off this season of comm-UNITY! with Ugandan musician and community development officer, Catherine Anyango, based in Moroto. As one of the recipients of the Kuonyesha Art Fund she shares her experience of working with youth living with HIV/AIDS to produce a collective music project.
As we draw closer to the end of the season we are joined by Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a cartoonist and a philosophy lecturer. Over the years he has used his voice and talent to amplify the voices and grievances of others, from a place of generosity. For him, humour has always been a form of communication. We discuss this, his 23-day quarantine ordeal, and his book titled 'Uncomfortable Laughter' that he published with the support of our Kuonyesha Art Fund.
Affectionately known as Maama by many in her community, we sit down with Santa Joyce Lakar who is currently the Chairperson at Atiak Sugarcane Plantation Outgrowers Cooperative Society. Her influence however goes beyond this as she has lived a full life of generosity across a broad spectrum of jobs and projects including service as a district councillor and peace building in the Northern region of Uganda.
Driven by her faith, she believes that we are blessed to be a blessing. And shares the ways in which the work that she engages in is bigger than just her. In many ways through generosity she has used the principles of peace building in various facets of community.
Storytelling can be a big part of community building. In this episode Sarah Nsigaye, Documentary Filmmaker and Journalist, details the way she has used the tool of filmmaking in various rural communities across Uganda to educate, empower and create jobs. Music therapy has proven to be beneficial for various mental health conditions. Benjamin Spartos Komagum, recording and performing artist, dedicates a lot of his time and talent to hosting music sessions at the Gulu Regional Referral Mental Unit.
Having experienced depression, and the power of music and community in overcoming it; he highlights the ways in which artists need community, and community needs artists.
Tereka Kenneth Desire, dancer and choreographer, is the director and vision bearer behind the Unseen Dreams Dance Arts Festival that has been running for the past 6 years. Through generosity the platform seeks to empower and break barriers by promoting inclusivity for marginalized and differently abled people who are usually overlooked. He shares with us his experience and testimonies of the unifying power of art, dance and generosity.
Visual Arts Practitioner & Consultant, Owekitiibwa Nuwa Wamala Nnyanzi, honored by the Kabaka of Buganda in 1992, joins us in episode 4 and trails tales of generosity across generations as he shares his life's journey.

Kapchorwa, he tells us, literally means 'home of friends'. Generosity lies in their geography and in their DNA. And he shares anecdotes of ways his community propelled him towards his dream and ways in which he is doing the same for children and individuals in Kapchorwa.
As we draw closer to the end of the season, we sit down with Pastor Moses Mukisa, founding pastor of Worship Harvest Ministries. Through wise and gentle words he brings to light not just the importance of generosity, but the importance of a justice driven generosity. One that builds bridges, transforms rather than sustains dependence and builds relationships.
These and other principles have been the foundation on which the Worship Harvest Church community has been. built. And in turn have been the principles that they seek to transform their communities with.
Ms. Doreen Nawejje, CEO of Women and Children with albinism Uganda, joins us in episode 7 as we delve into her journey with the organisation and the role generosity has played in her immediate and extended community.
She is an artist and teacher who describes herself as positively living with albinism, and moved by the example of her own parents, sibling and grandmother, has dedicated her life to supporting people living with albinism.
As she shares, it is clear that a key element at the foundation of generosity is acceptance.
Barbara Kasekende, Corporate Social Invrstments Manager at Stanbic Bank Uganda, aims to do two things everyday; learn something new and impact a life.
It is her perspective on impact, tied to generosity, that drives her to give back to the community, particularly young people.

Ruth Bahika, child psychologist and Founder, Director at Grace Villa (a sanctuary for at risk girls in Kabale) shares with us the journey that led her to start the home and the generosity that has kept it running for the past 7 years.
Grace Villa has been built and run on the generosity of community. And this has come out of people’s innate desire to give, which is strengthened by various examples and expressions of generosity that they are exposed to.
Wetsemba Miriam, documentary photographer and Jim Joel Nyakaana, travel and documentary photographer take us behind their lenses in episode 4 of this season.
Commissioned by CivSource Africa, they travelled across various regions within Uganda, to document expressions and symbols of generosity.
Both share with us what they saw and learned from the communities they visited. They both underscore that stories are a part of the way you journey with a community into who they are. These very stories are important in highlighting our circular forms of giving, and the ways we spill into each other, despite colonial narratives and borders that have been created.
“I was standing on the shoulder of giants”, says Mrs. Pheona Nabasa Wall, President of The Uganda Law Society, as she describes how generosity played a part in her campaign for the position.
Ms Wall joins us in episode 3 as we continue to delve into the beauty of generosity.
She shares stories of the individuals and organizations that took up her cause as their own during her campaign. She highlights how very often, the generosity of women helps propel other women into public office.

Mr. Shem Opolot, Co-founder and Managing Director of The Good Currency joins us in this episode as we delve into the eco-system of sustainable giving and volunteer work that the platform seeks to support and be a part of in various communities.
He shares the foundation on which the Good Currency was built, the mechanisms on which it functions, and their primary goals.
Mr. Opolot emphasizes the importance of both accountability within giving practices as well as measurement of impact.

Her Royal Highness the Nnabagereka of Buganda, who is the Queen consort of Kabaka Ronald Mwenda Mutebi II, the King of Buganda, joins us in episode 10 as we wrap up the second season of comm-UNITY!
The Nnabagereka is an icon who is highly regarded in society for her leadership in various areas including the Nnabagereka Development Foundation, which she founded in 2000. Through the Foundation, she has done charitable work for children, the youth and women, in the areas of education, healthcare, and community development.
In this episode, we discuss generosity and its heritage, particularly in the Buganda culture. We talk about how expressions of generosity have transformed over time. We also touch on the importance of structuring giving on the African continent.
Sameera Mehra, head of Global Alliance Development for Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), joins us in episode 9. Sameera shares from research conducted by CAF titled: “Growing Giving in Uganda.”
This important piece of work was borne of CAF’s desire, alongside their partners, to both identify the roadblocks and the opportunities to growing individual charitable giving in Uganda.

We are joined by Mr. Keith Kibirangi, head of African Philanthropy at Save The Children UK, who quickly sets the tone for the conversation with the words “Africans are generous! Generosity begins in Africa!”.
Often African ways of giving are lost in the international narrative. But Mr. Kibirango gives an indepth look into the work of African philanthropists, and the many forms of giving outside of grants and funding.
There is a whole range of people concerned about the impact they can have on the development of communities on the continent, in ways that promote self sustainability. Indeed “Africans are generous! Generosity begins in Africa!”
Carrying on in the spirit of UBUNTU, we sit down with Dr. Stigmata Tenga, Executive Director of the African Philanthropy Network (APN), who reminds us that philanthropy is both an act of giving and an act of power.
While that power has often been guarded by the Global North, Dr. Stigmata highlights the importance of shifting that power back in our own hands as Africans, dismantling systems of inequality, and recovering the dignity of communities that have been undermined and undervalued.
African Philanthropy is community centered, and while it is often overlooked, she also shares how its value has been brought to the fore during this COVID-19 pandemic, as communities took support and solidarity into their own hands.
Joining us in Episode 6 is our special guest Kwiz Era. He is a renown painter and illustrator and he collaborated with CivSourve Africa to illustrate a book of African Proverbs on Generosity, joins us in episode 6.
He starts by sharing with us why he felt the book of African Proverbs was a project he had to be a part of. And by extension how the themes that enticed him (PanAfricanism, Local Philanthropy and Art) are important elements within our society. In many ways, art plays a part in preserving our ways of being, and this includes our stories and experiences of generosity.
In episode 5, we sit down with Honorable Rhoda Kalema, former Cabinet Minister and Member of the Costituent Assembly. A woman who has given so much of herself, time and resources; we trace the roots of this generosity in her life.
From her faith, to the example her parents set and the culture of sharing during her school-going days, she drops gems of wisdom on what has become her way of life.
It is interesting that even though UBUNTU is deeply embedded in African culture, the dominant narrative often portrays Africans as beggars in desperate need of aid. In episode 4 we sit down with LC5 Chairman of Gulu District, Mr. Martin Ojara Mapenduzi who shares with us stories that reflect the Acholi culture of giving.
It is widely believed that it is more blessed to give than to receive. And Gulu district is filled with stories of the local community coming together to share (big or small) and build. It is important that we are deliberate about telling African stories of giving.
We continue to delve into the topic of genoristy within community with special guest Nalongo Alinda Ikanzi, Head of Subject at LDC (Law Development Centre) and a Partner at Amber Solicitors & Advocates.
Her own experiences of generosity have inspired and guided her acts of giving. She shares with us about leading the LDC COVID-19 taskforce, that catered to the needs of a group of students, while consciously respecting their dignity.
She highlights that as a mother of four girls she is inspired to leave a better world for them as women. This includes leading a life in which giving is more than just cents and shillings, but is also about truly present and connecting with those she’s giving to.
In this episode we are joined by Mr. Ruganzu Bruno, an artist, teacher and community organizer. On the podcast, our discussion has largely been around the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown have had on our communities.
We now move into chronicling and celebrating the ways we’ve been community to each other through these changes.
Mr. Ruganzu takes us back in time to show how the philosophy of ubuntu is ingrained in our history and indigenous knowledge. We are back for season 2! Ms. Allen Asiimwe, Chief Technical Officer at Trademark East Africa, joins us in episode 1, chronicling the ways in which the trade community has been affected by and adapted to lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She shares stories from the ground on how the pandemic has put food security and livelihoods at risk, pushed for the integration of trade and health, and forced the East African community to act collectively in an innovative manner.

Fitness instructor and Founder of Kona Dance Workout, Mr. Felix Wamala joins us for the final conversation of the season. He shares his experience of working and staying connected to clients in a period of time where gyms are closed. And in a period of time where individuals have a lot more time on their hands and are looking for ways to remain active and healthy at home.
Our discussion mostly revolves around adapting to change and the power of using what you have, where you are. For Felix this has meant utilizing social media more and hosting free live workouts online.
Dr. Olive Kobusingye, Consultant Trauma Surgeon and Senior Research Fellow, MUSPH, joins us in this episode as we look at Uganda’s healthcare workforce and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected them.
One of the most important points that she highlights is that this workforce is a broad community (beyond the doctors and nurses that are our most common point of contact). And this broad community of individuals, who engage in a plethora of tasks and duties, are at a high risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus.
In a healthcare system where we are already struggling with the basics, protecting health workers during this pandemic is one of many issues regarding their working conditions, that needs to be addressed. Beyond COVID-19, the new normal should include investment in bettering our healthcare system.
This week we are joined by Dr. John Mark Bwanika, Founding Partner and Director of The Medical Concierge Group Limited. We explore the various forms and the value of digital healthcare and telemedical services within the medical community.
COVID-19 has forced us in many ways to rethink and reinvent the ways we do things. In this case it has shone light on technological forms of healthcare services and prompted the medical community to see value in adopting these methods. Technology which is usually seen as unavailable to most in Uganda, is becoming more commonly accesible as developments in the sector are made. The medical world can and should grow with it beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Pamela Enyonu, is a mixed media artist and one of the recipients of a grant under the Kuonyesha Art Fund (a program of CivSource Africa). Pamela's work mostly revolves around themes of gender, awareness, empowerment and experiences of working African women. In this episode she shares, through personal experience and one of her own art pieces, what the lockdown has revealed within the artist community.
Her observations include the way the quietness of the lockdown has allowed artists to rediscover themselves and create in the process. She also talks about the cracks the lockdown has exposed in the art ecosystem (as the cord with international funders and donors has been severed), when it comes to sustaining and building our art community. Perhaps this is the time to look inwards and galvanise our strengths as a means of reclaiming power in our art community.
Mr. Brian Kagoro, Pan Africanist, Founder and Executive Director of UHAI Africa Group, joins us in episode 11 as we unpack the ways in which the pandemic has both divided and united us because of collective fear and uncertainty.
He describes COVID-19 as a testing of the glue that holds us together. On the one hand, it has revealed how little we know of each other, highlighting and adding to pre-existing prejudices, discrimination and stigma within the African community. On the other hand, it has brought to light values of solidarity, care and resilience that are embedded in our community. And has created space for inclusive leadership to emerge. We are noticing our strengths and we are noticing the things we need to fix.
This week we are joined by freelance photojournalist Sumy Sarduni, whose work is heavily centred around gender rights and women. Through her lens we walk through some of the experiences of the women that make up Kampala's sex work community. This conversation brings to surface the way we see each other, and the way we pick and choose who deserves to be protected within the lines of community.
The COVID-19 Crisis has further exacerbated the living and working conditions of these women, who have been cut off from food distribution by local leaders within their living communities. Sumy walks us through glimpses of her time with the sex work community, whom she has formed a relationship with through Lady Mermaid's Bureau (a sex workers organisation dedicated to reducing stigma, discrimination and violation against sex workers). It is important that we take care of our community as a whole
Legendary Hip Hop Pioneer and Bavubuka Foundation Founder, Babaluku, joins us in this episode as we reflect on the relationship between dignity, growing our communities around indigenous African ideologies, and the lockdown measures that have been taken
He shares from his observations and experiences how institutionalised thinking and western individualism during and beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic, can harm the communities that need to be safeguarded and supported. Are there methods in combating this pandemic that could have been employed, which dignify and honour our communal way of life?
In this episode, we continue our conversation on social security amongst the community of workers in Uganda with Dr. Phiona Muhwezi Mpanga, Lecturer at The School Of Law, Makerere University. Focusing more broadly on social protection, which includes but is not limited to pay, she highlights the importance of this protection in maintaining workers' dignity (both in the formal and informal sectors).
From the terms of work to the hours of work, the security of tenure, and gender equality reforms. We reflect on the ways this lockdown has foregrounded these existing issues, the need for workers to mobilize and articulate the needs of their community collectively, and the need to hold the government accountable for all the citizens within this working community.

We discuss the community of workers within Uganda's formal sector and the challenges they are facing during this time, many of which can be traced to the need for social security reforms and protection.
He raises concerns regarding the space that NSSF (The National Security Fund mandated by the government) occupies as a monopoly fund. What is the place of the NSSF in supporting the population of workers, especially considering crisis access in a time such as this? What does a social security fund that centers and represents workers in Uganda across the board look like? And in reimagining social security protections, what are the ways in which communities of workers can mobilize to push for change?
Dr. Mary Goretti Nakabugo, PhD in Education and Executive Director of UWEZO Uganda, joins us in episode 5 as we continue to delve into the education community.
She uses her own learning experience during Uganda's Resistance War in 1985 as a backdrop to highlight that the key missing point in Uganda's current learning framework is a focus on the basic foundations of learning that allow children to make quality progress.
While the Ministry of Education has done well to provide a framework that advocates for learning continuity and home integration during this period, there is a need to address how, without a strong foundation in the basics of learning, the processes of continuity and integration are hindered.

In the inaugural episode of comm-UNITY we are joined by Rita Auma, an author, lawyer and mental health advocate. She shares her insight on mental health and wellness in the community, what that means and looks like during the time of COVID-19, what is changing, what needs to change, and what possible outcomes we might see.
Mental Health has been brought closer to home in this period of time, as the crisis has brought some of what many have faced for years right to our doorsteps. Has this enhanced awareness and support? Has this moved law and policymakers to bring mental healthcare to the forefront of society?
