Jean-Luc Godard, the French-Swiss director who was a key figure in the Nouvelle Vague, the film-making movement that revolutionised cinema in the late 1950s and 60s, has died aged 91. French news agency AFP reported that he died “peacefully at home” in Switzerland with his wife Anne-Marie Mieville at his side.

Founded in 2004, White River Indie Films was created by a small group of film lovers who wanted to bring works from outside the mainstream to an appreciative, film-loving audience. The first three-day festival was held in White River Junction, Vermont in 2005. From the beginning, our focus was on screening issue-oriented films, hosting discussions, and partnering with community organizations with the goal of inspiring change. Alongside this mission was the aim of bringing filmmakers and film lovers together to enjoy groundbreaking, provocative, and entertaining movies.

Whether you’re a film buff or casual moviegoer, The Maryland Film Festival will leave you inspired!

“For the span of a few days, the center of cinematic gravity had shifted from wherever you’d usually look for it (Hollywood, New York, Paris) to Baltimore.” — Richard Brody, Film Critic at The New Yorker

The Festival hub will be the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway, the 1915 movie house that returned in 2017 as Baltimore’s centerpiece for film appreciation and education.

In the past, the Festival has hosted famed directors including Barry Levinson, Kathryn Bigelow, Melvin Van Peebles, Greta Gerwig, Jonathan Demme, Alex Gibney, Barry Jenkins, Matthew Porterfield, David Lowery, Kris & Joe Swanberg and Lena Dunham.
