The Kids Crew discover the animals living right outside our doors. With expert guest Cooper Freeman and research from junior producer Thaniel Lentz, we explore the challenges and joys of living alongside wild creatures everywhere.

This time on The Children's Hour, the Kids Crew get aboard the JOIDES Resolution, virtually, while the ship is at sea off the coast of Portugal. We meet Amy Mayer, the Onboard Outreach Officer for the JOIDES Expedition 397, and research fellow Saray Sanchez. We learn how the JOIDES brings up core samples from the ocean floor, that they then slice, x-ray, and study. Some of the soils they are bringing to the surface are over 300 million years old. Scientists aboard the JOIDES stay for a short rotation, and collect as much data as possible. The ship is drilling for core samples 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when they are at the drilling site. The Kids Crew have a lot of questions for Amy and Saray about life on board a scientific research vessel. We also hear a poem by Kenn Nesbitt, from his poetry playground Poetry4Kids.com. This episode of The Children's Hour is going to stink, as we learn all about skunks with the founder and director of The Dragoo Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations, Dr. Jerry Dragoo. We'll find out where skunks are found, why they smell, and how to avoid getting sprayed. Dr. Dragoo is a world renowned mephitologist, or biologist who studies skunks.

Not only does Mr. Bergman share his penguin interactions, but our crew also share their love of the penguins at the Albuquerque BioPark's Penguin Exhibit where King, Macaroni, and Gentoo penguins live.
There are 15 other species of penguins in the world, some of which are critically endangered. But, all penguins are on thin ice. Overfishing, changing ocean temperatures, and pollution threaten their survival.

This week on The Children's Hour we chat with Julie from Ants on a Log, a band that performs music for children and other childlike people that advocates for positivity, social justice, and silliness through song.
This 2-person band consists of Julie and Anya from Philadelphia, PA. The two began writing together, finding driving harmonies and song topics that were silly, serious, environmental, feminist, gender-bending, and just plain fun.
In their off-stage lives, Julie is a music therapist and Anya is an elementary science teacher. Their powers combined make for smart and socially conscious folk, a delight for children and adults of all ages.

This week we discuss the importance of self-realization, and the freedom in being seen for who you are. Many of Ants on a Log songs challenge societal archetypes, such as girls have long hair and boys have short hair - they even have a song called Some Girls Have Short Hair! We visit the topic of pronouns and how they are important and respectful of an individual. Ants even has a mix less on their website called "Practice Your Pronouns". Julie also offers their experience using non-binary pronouns.

This week we explore a creature that used to live throughout the mountain west United States, the elusive black footed ferret.
Once declared extinct, the highly endangered specialist predator may make a comeback in the North American prairie thanks in part to our guest, Paul Marinari, Senior Curator at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute at the National Zoo. We'll have an introduction to Elizabeth Ann, a ferret cloned from cells frozen in 1987.

Way back in the days before the end of The Big Sick, students everywhere were forced to stare at computer screens featuring live video feeds of their classmates. This was happening in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens across the country and the world. With the help (and the subconscious musings) of a dreamer named Halley, a team of super heroes discover that unity and togetherness can get them through any sicky situation.Visit the ICKY Page for a learning guide & more What started as a pandemic project for The Children's Hour Kids Crew in early fall 2020, turned into an epic musical documenting this extraordinary moment in history from a child's point of view. Not only is the music set to infectious beats, the sound effects and scoring captivate children and adults alike. We hope that ICKY can be used to engage kids of all ages in conversation about the social and emotional toll of the year of the pandemic.The playbook was written by Sarin West, songs composed by Jules Latimer Warren, and lyrics penned by Hakim Bellamy. The musical was directed by Jonathan Dunski and Nicholas Main with music direction and arrangements by Sage Sarason. Katie Stone was the executive producer.Starring 16 members of the Kids Crew, and 3 adults, the musical was conceived out of individual interviews with the cast members about their feelings around Covid-19. Many months of workshops, rehearsals, rewrites, and more rehearsals, the musical was recorded in person using the children's family automobiles as sound booths.The musical has a full score composed by Robb Janov and performed by the members of the Squash Blossom Boys with special guest, Maya Malone. This time on The Children's Hour, we partner with our friends at Well Beings Studio to create a show that's about using poetry to heal, support and express yourself. Creating art with kids impacted by medical trauma, Well Beings Studio brings their students' work to The Children's Hour.
This is an hour full of poetry. We'll hear poems that heal from children and their families who dealing with cancer, hospitalizations, or disability. Included on this show is Kenn Nesbit, former United States Children's Poet Laureate. We'll also feature songs from Well Beings Studio's musical release, Monster In Me.

You also hear from Cali Kids, an organization dedicated to supporting kids and families when someone is in the hospital.

We also hear more from Diana Lynn who shares her poem Hero Speaking on our show, but in this segment talks about how drumming is her dear friend she relies on to always be there for her.

Just a few of the important black inventors mentioned in our show. Find out more about the significant creations black inventors have brought to life to make our lives modern-day easy HERE Thomas Elkins designed a device that helped with the task of preserving perishable foods by way of refrigeration. Elkins patented this refrigerated apparatus on November 4, 1879. and had previously patented a chamber commode in 1872 and a dining, ironing table and quilting frame combined in 1870. "Stagecoach Mary,” Mary Fields was the first African-American woman mail carrier in the United States Willie M. "Bill" Pickett was a cowboy, rodeo, Wild West show performer and actor. In 1989, Pickett was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Sarah Boone was an African American dressmaker who made her name by inventing the modern-day ironing board. In her patent application, she wrote that the purpose of her invention was "to produce a cheap, simple, convenient and highly effective device, particularly adapted to be used in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies' garments. Alexander Miles was an American inventor and business person, best known for being awarded a patent for automatically opening and closing elevator doors. He was awarded U.S. Patent 371,207 on October 11, 1887. Madame C.J. Walker, the First Black American Woman to Be a Self-Made Millionaire. She invented the world’s first hair-straightening formula and/or the hot comb. Nathaniel Alexander invented and patented the folding chair. According to the history books, Mr. Alexander invented and patented the chair for use in churches and school and group gatherings, including a pocket/holder on the back for people to store their hymnals, school books, etc. Dr. George F. Grant, an African American dentist and inventor. Dr. Grant received a U.S. patent No. 638,920, the world’s first patent for a golf tee – a wooden spike with a flexible rubber peg for the ball. Sarah Goode was an entrepreneur and inventor. She was the ... Goode invented a folding cabinet bed which helped people who lived in tight housing to utilize their space efficiently. Philip B Downing is best known for his patent on the modern day letter box & a mechanical device for operating street railway switches

This episode of The Children's Hour is going to stink, as we learn all about skunks with the founder and director of The Dragoo Institute for the Betterment of Skunks and Skunk Reputations, Dr. Jerry Dragoo. We'll find out where skunks are found, why they smell, and how to avoid getting sprayed. Dr. Dragoo is a world renowned mephitologist, or biologist who studies skunks.
Plus Kids Crewmember, Evan Daitz has a review of the trilogy A Boy Called Bat, in which Dr. Dragoo is a character. And the kids in the Extinction Diaries cover a giant spider that was thought to be extinct, but has been rediscovered.

This week on The Children's Hour we have an interview with Ziggy Marley, a book review and we learn about a rediscovered chameleon that was thought to be extinct.
This week on The Children's Hour, we explore the genre of science fiction with our musical friends from Ramah, New Mexico, MeriDean. This type of storytelling allows our imagination to become immersed in other worldly places, with advanced technologies, on exoplanets, or flying through space, and using actual science to help us believe the impossible. With excerpts of famous works of "Sci-Fi" like The War of the Worlds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Slaughterhouse Five, and original pieces recorded by masterful storytellers, we immerse ourselves in futuristic fantasy.
Plus the kids in the Extinction Diaries update us about the Sumatran Tiger, and how our use of palm oil is hurting their chance for survival.

On this episode of The Children's Hour, we explore balloons! We learn what makes the drifting hot air balloons stay afloat in the sky, and we learn the history of how balloons came to be a mode of transportation. We also hear the Balloonist's Prayer, and we take a trip in a hot air balloon with one of our Kids Crew members. Plus, we visit with the artists behind Airigami, who make giant sculptures and even clothing out of latex balloons. The kids in the Extinction Diaries talk about what happens when people release helium balloons into nature. Finally we find out about those mysterious white balloons that appear all over the world every single day, high in the sky.

This week on The Children's Hour, hear our chat with astronaut Christina Koch who is aboard the International Space Station recorded live at the University of New Mexico with an audience of over 600 students. This was a rare and out of this world opportunity for students to engage with NASA astronauts, space experts and other space enthusiasts in an interactive atmosphere.

The Kids Crew also spoke with UNM Biologist David Hanson about his experiments on the ISS learning about photosynthesis in space. We were joined on stage by Kennedy Space Center scientist Kurt Leucht, who's working on NASA's future plans to live on Mars and the Moon. Plus we spoke with NASA researcher and New Mexico biologist Jacob Torres, who's green chile plants are heading to the ISS in the spring of 2020. Finally, is there life on Mars? Professor Newsom from UNM's Mars Space Laboratory tells us what they are finding with the Mars Rover.

From picking up pencils to making way in a crowd for their charge, we learned all about the important jobs helper dogs do, how they learn these things, and how kids can be a part of it.

This week on The Children’s Hour we learned about the mysteries of Sandia Cave from the rangers who work to preserve and protect it. The cave has been a shelter for animals and humans, for more than 10,000 years. Today kids can crawl all the way to the back of the cave, to get a feeling for live as a cave dweller.

From the Zia to the coelophysis, turquoise to yucca flowers the Land of Enchantment's state symbols showcase our unique culture, landscape and history. The Children's Hour Kids Crew are joined by kids who are actively trying to save the planet as part of Our Children's Trust. Aji Piper joined us from Seattle to talk about the lawsuit that he and 19 other kids are involved with to hold governments accountable for pollution. The kids are winning their cases, and that's good news for us all.

Albuquerque's Valle Vista Elementary School 4th Graders from Mrs. Dawson's class joined The Children's Hour Kids Crew in the studio to talk about how bird watching at the Valle del Oro was a life changing experience. Not only did these kids learn about our feathered friends in the Bosque, but the program enabled them to be citizen scientists.
