Kevin led Caulk Endodontics and later served as National Sales Manager for DENTSPLY/Caulk. In 1997, Kevin and his partners purchased OMNII Oral Pharmaceuticals. Kevin focused on product development, including the World’s first unit-dosed fluoride varnishes. In 2006, OMNII was sold to 3M. Kevin served as their Global Prevention Team Leader and in Industry Relations. Kevin also served as a volunteer for numerous organizations focused on access to care solutions, including the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation, as Board Chair for Children’s Dental Health Project, and he currently serves on the Board of American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation and the Medicaid-CHIP Dental Association.

As a Managing Member for Elevate Oral Care he leads preventive product development for unique prevention solutions, like silver diamine fluoride.

Listen to Dr. Anna Fuks, a leader in our profession, talks about her new book on pulp therapy for children. In this great podcast, Dr. Fuks discusses her amazing journey and career in pediatric dentistry, the history of pulp therapy for children, past to present, and why there was a need for the new textbook. Dr. Fuks describes the differing perspectives in Europe. She also talks about MTA use and how we need to grow it. She discusses the teaching FMC and FS treatments as well as describing her takes on the exciting future ahead in pediatric dentistry.

Bio:

Prof. Anna B. Fuks was born in Curitiba, Brazil, and graduated in Dentistry by the Federal University of the State of Parana. She completed her post-graduate course in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Alabama, USA. and did her residency at the Children’s Hospital of the same University. She returned to Brazil, where she practiced and taught Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Parana until 1973 when she immigrated to Israel and joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reaching the degree of Professor. Upon her retirement she received the grade of Professor Emeritus, that she maintains until the present date.

Concomitantly to teaching and clinical practice Prof. Fuks dedicated herself to clinical and laboratory research. Being fluent in several languages, she has lectured in several countries worldwide.

Dr. Fuks was President of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry and is an honorary member of several Pediatric Dental Associations. She has published over 160 articles and 85 abstracts in many international journals, wrote 18 chapters in Pediatric Dentistry books, and continues serving actively as a member of the Editorial Board of several dental journals.

Dr. Fuks has received several international prizes in research. In 2013 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and in 2015 became an Honorary Member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry (IAPD).

Dr. Fuks worked par-time in clinical Pediatric Dentistry till 2017, when she completed 80. She continued clinical teaching at the Post-Graduate Clinic of the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine until 2020 when, with the eruption of COVID, and being considered “high-risk”, she stopped clinical instruction. Presently she participates as mentor at the post graduate students’ seminars at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in Jerusalem. Also, in 2020Dr. Fuks made her first presentation onlinegiving a complete course for the Russian Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Since then, she has made several presentations and webinars online.

Dr. Fuks is the Principal Editor of the Pediatric Endodontics, the only book specialized in endodontic treatment for primary and young permanent teeth. The book has already been translated into Chinese and the Turkish version is soon appearing in the market. She has now completed the publication of Contemporary Endodontics for Children and Adolescents, launched at the AAPD 2023 Annual Session, where this podcast was recorded.

Dr. Jeffrey Rhodes is a 1984 graduate of Austin College in Sherman, TX. He graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1988. Then, he completed specialty training in pediatric dentistry in 1990. He has completed specialty fellowships at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He considers it an honor to have been trained under Suzi Seale. While at Baylor College of Dentistry, he published research in growth and development of young children’s faces with Francis Miranda and Peter Buschang.

He has taught pediatric dental residents for NYU Langone in Springfield, MO and will teach at Oklahoma University Pedo program when it opens this fall. He enjoys lecturing about early orthodontic interventions and personal strategic planning for young dentists. His special interests lie in the growth and development of children’s smiles. He is passionate about ensuring that children receive education on how to have healthy, beautiful smiles for life.

Dr. Rhodes is also active in the community, serving on many boards, such as the Corporate Leadership Council of the Walton Arts Center and as a Southwestern District Trustee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). He has lived in Northwest Arkansas for over 30 years

Youth with a history of foster care report more oral health problems and less access to oral health care than their peers with no history of foster care. Dentists should recognize the oral health concerns of these youth in the context of their special health care needs and be prepared to render appropriate care. Future studies should explore barriers to oral health care among this vulnerable population. Youth in foster care have self-identified oral health care needs that should be assessed by dental professionals. Dr. Elise Sarvas completed her dental training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry and her residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. While in residency she earned concurrent Master of Science in Dentistry and Master of Public Health degrees. After almost seven years teaching dental students and pediatric dental residents full-time at the University of Minnesota she has recently taken a new position at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Sarvas is the first pediatric dentist to be a staff consultant and works primarily with other dental specialties and pediatric clinicians to provide oral health care to children and adolescents with complex medical needs. In her spare time, she enjoys podcasts, supervised neglect of her garden, marathons of the TV show variety, and traveling with her husband.

Dr. Kristi Linsenmayer tells the story of her journey from practice general dentistry at the Seattle Indian Health Board for 10 years, after deciding to become a pediatric dentist. She also simultaneously trained to receive an MPH degree, sewing together academic training with the years of experience in her passionate area of interest. Kristi tells us how she built a practice first in the hospital, then in an outpatient setting, all organically for many years. Be inspired by listening to Dr. Linsenmayer and her amazing journey.

Bio:

Dr. Linsenmayer is a board-certified pediatric dentist. She has practiced dentistry for almost 30 years. Raised in the Pacific Northwest she earned both a BS degree in Molecular Biology and a DDS degree from the University of Washington. After practicing dentistry as a general dentist for a decade at the Seattle Indian Health Board, an Urban American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) clinic, she returned to the University of Washington and completed training in Pediatric Dentistry. In conjunction with the pediatric dental residency program, she also received a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH). The program was part of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s leadership training in pediatric dentistry. She has established two busy pediatric dental offices that she owns in Seattle and Southeast Alaska.

Her practice now is in Ketchikan, a small Southeast Alaska community in the heart of the Tonguss National Rainforest. Geographically, it is north of Vancouver Island with similar weather to the Pacific Southeast, and very different from the snowy tundra of what we might picture Alaska to be.

Dr. Beauchamp is very involved in local, state, and national dental societies. She has been active with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has been on the Board of Trustees as Parliamentarian and as the Southeast District Trustee. She was chair of the Council on Communications and is currently Chair of the Political Action Committee. Presently she serves on the American Dental Association Council of Government Affairs. She was a member of the Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations and ADA’s representative on an Advisory Committee of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Dr. Beauchamp is also active with the Tennessee Dental Association, currently serving as the Past President and Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee. She has served as a Tennessee delegate to the ADA House of Delegates for 11 years. She is the past president of the Eighth District Dental Society.

After a brief stint in Seattle, Washington to work in public health dentistry, Dr. Jenna returned to her beloved Tar Heel State to receive her Master of Science degree and certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from UNC. Dr. Jenna is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the North Carolina Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

While in dental school, Dr. Jenna met her husband, Brett. She considers herself very lucky to be able to work with amazing patients and alongside an awesome team, but even luckier to be the mom to three incredible kids, Aaron, Abigail, and Caroline. The whole Alvey clan loves to be outside, playing sports, and, of course, cheering on the Tar Heels!

She is the recipient of a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) K02 grant for public health studies and research of and coordination of interprofessional education and practice at NYU. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and serves as a consultant and grants reviewer for the AAPD. Her research interests are in the integration of social work and dentistry, HPV Vaccination Anticipatory Guidance, Sugar Sweetened Beverage Policies, MIH, and molar substitution. She completed her B.A. in psychology at Barnard College, doctoral training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and post-doctoral training at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is currently completing her MPH part-time at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She maintains an active private practice in NYC.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. He completed his residency in Pediatric Dentistry at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental medicine. He currently owns and operates his own practice, Arctic Dental, in Muscatine, IA.

He serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa in Pediatric Dentistry, and Preventive and Community Dentistry.

As a key opinion leader in pediatric dentistry, he has published numerous articles in trade magazines, and lectured across the country for various organizations. He is the host of The Sprig Podcast which focuses on topics relevant to pediatric dentistry. He is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's Speakers Bureau.

He and his wife Lisa moved their family across the country to Seguin, Texas, and opened from scratch their first dental practice, Alligator Dental six days after graduation.

Since then Dr. Al and his wife Lisa have worked tirelessly to build a successful dental practice. Today they have four growing locations and a central administrative office. Alligator Dental employs almost 50 staff and sees over 30,000 patient encounters annually. Dr. Al is a hands-on owner but practices full time and has an amazing administrative team that helps him run his organization.

In addition to his private practice. Al has been part-time faculty at the pediatric dental program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio since 2009. He has taught pediatric practice management at numerous programs and spent time himself as a part-time associate doctor in his early years as his practice was growing. In addition to hiring many of his own associates, he has mentored and counseled hundreds of residents in the transition to private practice with advice on contracts, evaluation of work opportunities, and being a sounding board.

Despite the success of the practice Al and Lisa's greatest accomplishment is making their life work as spouses and business partners and raising their seven children who are all presently teenagers.

Biography:

Dr. Purnima Kumar is a Professor of Periodontology at The Ohio State University. She received her dental degree from Annamalai University in India, and her Masters in Periodontology and PhD in Molecular Microbiology and from The Ohio State University. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Kumar maintains an active research laboratory that is funded through the NIH and oral healthcare industry collaborations. She serves as an editor for numerous journals including the Journal of Periodontology and Microbiome. She has several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has written book-chapters in molecular microbiology and periodontology. She has also been invited to lecture at several national and international meetings on the microbial etiology of periodontitis. She presently serves as the Chair of the Continuing Education Oversight Committee for the American Academy of Periodontology and on the Council for Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association and the Taskforce for Women in Periodontics. She is also the official spokesperson for the ADA on e-cigarettes and vaping.

Dr. Jessica Y. Lee

Dr. Lee has been very active in national leadership positions for over 20 years and currently serves as the President for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) She is the Demeritt Distinguished Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Chair of the Division of Pediatric and Public Health at the University of North Carolina. She is also a Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Lee received her MPH and DDS degrees from Columbia University and her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was also an NIDCR National Research Service Award recipient. She is a board-certified Pediatric Dentist and an active member of the medical staff at UNC Hospitals and practices in the Dental Faculty Practice in the School of Dentistry. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She is involved in teaching, clinical practice, and research. Her primary research interests are in health literacy, access to dental care for young children, and health disparities. She is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards including the 2008 AAPD Jerome Miller “For the Kids” Award. In 2010, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers from President Barack Obama. In 2011, Dr. Lee was named the ‘Pediatric Dentist of the Year” by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
