A Fellow of both ACR and SIIM and recipient of SIIM's inaugural Gold Medal, he remains one of the field's most influential innovators.

A conversation with Kelvin Burton, Martha Henderson, and Graeme McKay from Mercy Ships, an international charity that operates the largest non-governmental ships in the world, providing aid including community health projects. The team discusses the informatics challenges that arise in such a unique environment.
Kelvin Burton joined the IS team at Mercy Ships in East Texas in October 1990. He filled many roles in IS over the years and is currently a Business Analyst in the Organizational Project Management Office. For the last 3 years he has been focused on projects intended to improve the hospital efficiency on Mercy Ships, including the Radiology PACS replacement project.
Martha first volunteered in 2012 with Mercy Ships in Togo, West Africa. Over the next 10 years she split her time working with the NHS as CT Radiographer and leading the Radiology team onboard the MV Africa Mercy. More recently her focus has been setting up the Radiology department on The Global Mercy while completing her Masters in Applied Global Health.
Having previously worked with innovative start-up companies including MedCurrent, Radimetrics as well as industry leaders Bayer Healthcare and JP Morgan Chase, Graeme McKay is combining his experience with a passion for healthcare and technology in his role as CTO and co-founder of Interlinx.

She is a frequent guest of the podcast and has been very active in the Hackathon Competition at the annual conference, serving as both team leader and mentor to aspiring imaging informaticists.
Raym Geis MD is a radiologist (semi-retired), interested in radiology data, standards, MLOps, and ethics of new data science approaches for medical imaging. He serves as Senior Scientist at the ACR Data Science Institute, Adjunct Associate Professor of Radiology at National Jewish Health, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is a member of the ACR Data Science Institute Advisory Group and the Canadian Association of Radiologists’ Artificial Intelligence Working Group, co-originator of the RSNA/SIIM National Imaging Informatics Curriculum and Course (NIIC-RAD). He was previously Chair of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) and Vice-Chair of the ACR Informatics Commission and is a Fellow of both societies.

Brad Genereaux is Medical Imaging and Smart Hospitals Alliance Manager at NVIDIA, and has a keen focus on accelerating artificial intelligence, visualization, and virtualization in healthcare. Sylvia Devlin has worked in medical imaging for more than half her life and there is no stopping her now. She started as one of the Radiology Department front desk clerk’s after graduating high school while going to medical radiography school. After graduating, Sylvia enjoyed working in various imaging areas but always had a keen interest in pursuing information systems and PACS. Sylvia earned her understudies in Information Systems followed by a Master’s in Informatics Administration.
Today Sylvia is a diplomate of the American Board of Imaging Informatics, earning her CIIP in 2010. She is the Director of Clinical Applications Operations at Radiology Partners and enthusiastically volunteers on many SIIM initiatives and serves as on the SIIM Board of Directors.

As an enthusiastic believer in the value of standards to healthcare in general and medical imaging in particular, he is a past Chair and contributor to DICOM and IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise), and is currently a member of the SIIM Board of Directors and Chair of the Process Committee of QIBA (Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance).

PIIRT Chapter 7 - Data Storage Jay Crawford
In this episode, hosts Mohannad and Prasanth interview Jay Crawford about data storage technologies discussed in Chapter 7 of the second edition of PIIRT. These core concepts are critical for understanding not only issues of business continuity and disaster recovery, but also system performance, latency, and resource provisioning.
The discussion covers storage standards and technologies such as RAID, as well as the change in storage utilization with advent of evolving storage media architectures going from magnetooptical, spinning platter, solid state, and tape archives. In particular, the transition from storage silos to enterprise imaging coincided with an explosion of storage needs for the next generation scanners, modalities such as Tomosynthesis, cardiology, pathology, dermatology, clinical research, comprising unique business with disparate storage needs, and datatypes, where the Vendor Neutral Archive pardigm has become the de facto standard.
Jay Crawford is the Chief Imaging Informatics Officer at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is a Biomedical Engineer, with subsequent Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Health Administration with emphasis on Information Technology and Leadership. Jay has been involved in Academic Medical Center PACS configuration, implementation, and support since the mid 1990's.

Chris is active in the open-source community and created the CornerstoneJS open-source project which is used by thousands of developers worldwide. He contributed to the DICOMweb specification and continues to work towards improving its performance for web-based viewing
Jason Hostetter is a radiologist and web developer from Baltimore MD. Jason has been building websites for almost 20 years and has been active in the imaging informatics community and SIIM since residency. Jason is the founder and developer of Pacsbin, a cloud radiology teaching file platform used by institutions and educators all over the world.
Simon Rascovsky is a Radiologist, Biomedical Engineer, and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in imaging informatics. He has worked as advanced imaging research director and Imaging IT leader for several top healthcare institutions in his home country, Colombia, where he founded two teleradiology SaaS and clinical services companies. In his last position, he led the development of the NucleusHealth cloud diagnostic viewer and is now the CTO at the Bay Area-based Alara Imaging.

Pathology Standards and Hackathon
In this episode, host Mohannad chats with Jason Klotzer and Markus Herrmann about pathology imaging standards. The team discusses the unique perspective of digital pathology and how the specialty has adopted DICOM standards to meet the needs of the pathologist's imaging workflow, as well as a hackathon sponsored by the DPA and DICOM Workgroup 26.
Jason Klotzer is a customer engineer working for the Healthcare vertical of Google Cloud, and he is based out of Austin, TX and has worked in the medical imaging space for more than 15 years. He has architected several PACS and VNA systems, specializing in visualization of medical images for diagnostic reading, recently focusing on the needs of AI/ML and analytics in medical imaging.
Markus Herrmann serves as Director of Computational Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the development of novel quantitative imaging biomarkers and computer-aided diagnostic tests combining microscopy imaging, computer vision, and mathematical modeling. Markus is active in national and international efforts to advance the standardization and adoption of digital and computational pathology, including the DICOM Working Group 26 Pathology, the IHE Pathology and Laboratory Medicine domain, the Pathology Innovation Collaborative Community, the Digital and Computational Pathology Committee of the College of American Pathologists, and the Regulatory and Standards Task Force of the Digital Pathology Association.

AI Racial Identification

They will also speak about the broader questions of access to healthcare in across minority and underrepresented groups, the importance of careful ML design choicesi. The discussants address the concept of race as a social construct, a predicter or health outcomes, myriad difficult race-related questions science and society will have to tackle as we embrace AI in Medicine.

In this episode, join hosts Arjun and Jason, as they discuss Ontologies, including an overview of the SNOMEDCT and RADLEX frameworks with Drs. Kenneth Wang and Scott Campbell.
Dr. Kenneth Wang is the MRI Section Chief for the Baltimore VA Medical Center and assistant professor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. He is a member of the RSNA informatics committee and serves as chairman of the RadLex steering committee and active in the 3-D printing special interest group. Dr. Scott Campbell is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he is also the Director of Pathology and Public Health Laboratory Informatics and the Senior Director of Research Information Technologies for UNMC. Dr. Campbell is a certified SNOMED Implementation Advisor and trained SNOMED CT author and serves in multiple capacities within SNOMED International including as the Chair of the Cancer Synoptic Reporting Working Group.

Norman Young has been involved with medical imaging product development for the past 20 years. He began his career as a medical imaging software developer at an major academic hospital in Toronto, Canada. That was followed by stints at two RIS/PACS companies. In 2005, he founded ClearCanvas, an open source medical imaging software company, which went on to be acquired by Synaptive Medical in 2014. Today, Norman manages a team of physicists and software developers at Synaptive, building applications in MRI and imaging informatics.
Chris Hafey serves as Chief Technology at Nucleus Health. Prior to NucleusHealth, Chris served as CTO for OnPoint Medical Diagnostics, Chief Architect at Vital Images, Director of Engineering at Stentor and other leadership roles for many technology firms. Chris is the creater of the Cornerstone Open source SDK for interacting with DICOM images on the web.
