I'm not gonna lie, I came down hard in this video which was from a live feed on my Vermont Dog Trainer Facebook page. It was a follow up to another live video where I asked what everyone's #1 struggle with their dog was.
We have to be realistic of our expectations, otherwise we are setting up our dogs (and us) to fail.
I run into a lot of clients that can't say the word "walk" in front of their dog because of the reaction they get. However this is something you can easily fix.
Start by just saying the word "walk" in a normal voice and don't do anything or even acknowledge your dog. Wait for him/her to calm down from it and say it again. Wait for him/her to calm down from it and say it again. Repeat these steps until your dog has no reaction, problem solved.

Boredom and Learning are on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum in my opinion. On one end you have boredom which can lead to many bad behaviors with your dog. On the other end you have learning which can lead to knowledge, exposure, and a stronger bond with your dog.
And in the middle of this spectrum is a grounded and content dog. One that is being fulfilled and listens well to you, as long as you are keeping them mentally engaged.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
This was a phrase that was brought up to me me a couple of weeks ago. It refers to a dog not having a choice in what the handler is doing to the dog. I think there are some misconceptions here and Matt and I give some great examples of it.
What are your thoughts?
That behavior you dislike, it's temporary. That pulling on the leash, it's temporary. Does your dog get you up in the morning? That's temporary.
I know I sound crazy (and sometimes I am), but once you understand how this works you can help your dog through tough situations. Your patience will increase and you will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. One thing you have to remember is:
"Nothing changes if nothing changes"

Depending on who you are, dog parks can either have a negative or positive association. I don't believe whoever created the dog park had bad intentions, it just sometimes turns into a negative place to be.
There are a few different ways a dog park can help your dog from it being a training environment on the outside to having off leash time on the inside.
What's your association to a dog park?
George Cockrell finally joined and we talked about fear aggression which is a term that can be misleading. With over 40 years experience training dogs he's someone I always lean on when I have questions. George is never afraid to tell it how it is and he is a wealth of knowledge.
I have interviewed George a couple of times on this podcast and you will recognize his voice in the intro and outro of the show.
George works for Dogizone in Maryland and they are a large facility that is training hundreds if not thousands of dogs per year.
A number of years ago I would tell my clients that having a calm dog was ideal and that is the goal. But what I didn't realize then is the process of how we want to quiet the dog's mind down first in order to get to calmness.
There is a big difference between a quiet mind and a calm mind. Think of a 5 year old in school, you can tell them to be quiet if they act up. That may quiet them while they are sitting in their chair but it doesn't mean they are calm. But if you keep the mind quiet for a while then you calmness will come.
Would love to know what your opinion is on this subject. How do you achieve a quieter mind with your dog?
We get numerous questions about how we can help a dog that has a fear of loud noises. Between thunderstorms, July 4th, and snow falling off the roof, there are a lot of loud noises that can affect our dogs.
We also discussed how to handle your dog licking and how to help our dog through reactive situations. These were excellent questions from our Facebook Live viewers.

Freedom is so powerful to dogs, it can lead to a wonderful feeling being able to go on hikes or walks in the woods. It can also lead to undesirable behaviors and unwanted decision making. Where do you and your dog fit in this spectrum??

I think too many times people will label their dog as stubborn but in most cases the dog hasn't been taught enough to know what is expected of them. Does that make them stubborn or is it lack of instruction. This is an interesting subject to talk about.
I would love to hear your feedback, visit our Vermont Dog Trainer Facebook page and comment on this podcast episode post.
I hear this so many times "my dog is alpha", or "my dog is dominant". And that may be true in certain situations but I have rarely come across a dog that is 100% truly dominant. There is no where near the amount of dominant dogs out there that people think there is.

Fall season is when I see a major change in dog's behaviors. It has to with the weather and their energy level. But this is a wonderful time of year to be outside with your dog.

One of our viewers asked which training philosophy do we practice. This is one of the most popular questions there is when it comes to dog trainers. However I think our answer will surprise you.
I thought it was important to stick to my roots which is why I went back to the original name of my business. We do more than just train dogs here and I think Vermont Dog Boarding & Behavior explains more of what we do.

Matt and I discussed how I used a retractable leash during one of my lessons last week. We also answered a Facebook question that had to deal with building trust between 2 dogs around food.
I wouldn't consider myself an expert in canine nutrition, but I do have some knowledge of it. And variety is the spice of life right? Well it's quite important for our dogs too when it comes to their nutrition. Don't be afraid to add/change things with your dog's food. But if you aren't sure, consult with your veterinarian.

Matt and I went to do an in-home consultation yesterday for one of our regular clients last week. You may not know Renae that well, but she is an awesome employee that does a ton of work around here. Her cleaning was out of this world last week and she always gives 110%.
There is a silence/delay at the start of this interview, you can fast forward to 1:40 mark which is when we get started
A little bit of a role reversal as it was my turn to get interviewed in this episode. This was from an Instagram Live with Abir from No Bones About it Pet Care. We talked a lot about my start in the business, socialization, and dog daycares.
I see a lot of mistakes made when it comes to doggie play dates. If you have play dates with your dog on a regular basis, this is and episode you don't want to miss.

I'm hoping we have gotten through our Kennel Cough situation last week as this week we are back open again. In the mean time Matt and I discussed how I ran some of the business out of my home in the early days.
Prozac is one of the most popular medications for dogs. It is prescribed for many different behavioral issues, but I have a prediction and I'm praying I'm wrong. Tune in to hear it.

In this episode Matt and I discuss the Sheriff dogs that want to control group play. We also touch on how we each have our own strategy when it comes to pack walks, but end with the same result.
Feeding times are just one way that we can create structure for our dogs. We have to remember that dogs are not grazers, that's not their DNA. In this episode we talk about how to regulate feeding times which in turn regulates a dog's appetite.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Matt and I discuss how we handle board and train reunions and one story that I will never forget! And freedom is a big word in the dog training world, one that gets misinterpreted all the time. Listen as Matt and I help you create structure with your dog.
There is nothing like a squeaker toy, the sound, watching your dog chew on it, and eventually destroy it at some point. I see it often and listen why I am not a big believer in squeaker toys.

This past summer I made a huge mistake with my dogs, the same mistake I tell my clients not to make. Even as a trainer, I mess up too. :-)
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Matt and I both sat in on a lesson with a client recently that was headed in a bad direction. But wait until you hear what happened to bring some awareness to all of us.
Plus, as you may or may not know I had a HUGE scare with Jemma last weekend.
On a side note - my audio may sound a little off as I forgot to turn my microphone on. LOL
It's not as bad as it sounds, but "Sitting on the dog" is an excellent mental activity. It helps drain energy on a bad weather day, or if you have guests over the dog is too worked up. Give it a try and let me know how it worked.

We received some questions about our pack walk from one of our Vermont Dog Trainer Academy members so we dive into how we handle it. We also discuss the importance of how creating patterns for dogs to follow makes it easier for them to understand.
When I sat down with Liz I got the feeling that I was sitting down with an old friend. It's actually been years since we have spoken but we quickly found out that we both have similar trajectories in our career. Liz is re-defining what a dog daycare is, even to the point of renaming it a "social club".
In case you didn't know, Liz is a fellow podcaster so be sure to subscribe to her show "Honest to Dog Podcast" as she has some amazing tips for dog owners. www.doghaus.ca
It's important to know how dogs investigate people and objects. Often times we don't give the dog a chance to learn about people and objects and that can create an insecurity which is something we don't want. Give the dog extra time.....it makes all the difference in the world.

Finley is a Covid dog that is currently one of our board and train dogs. I made a decision that I don't normally make unless it's needed. I'm proud of myself for listening to my instincts with this decision.
I had a lovely conversation with Jonathon and once you hear him you will understand why. He has a sense of peacefulness to him and you can tell he loves working with dogs. We talked about his book "The Jentle Method" and why he created it. I read it before the interview and I must say, it was hard to put down. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode.
Not all dog chews are made equally, and not all of them are good for your dog. Listen in on what I think is the best dog chew there is for your dog.

It was awesome to have Matt back in the chair next to me. We dive right in to what happened when he got hurt and we get an update on how he's feeling today!
My brother has been on the podcast before but you probably don't know that he is a successful car salesman. So we thought, why not do a live stream and offer our advice about cars and dogs??? I would love to know what you think about this.
There are a lot of working type dogs in the world that do need a job. It helps fulfill them for what they were bred for - working! Sometimes a backpack is just enough to do the trick.

I'm still flying solo as Matt is out with his injury from daycare. But I thought this would be a good time to talk about the training dogs and my announcement.
This little episode is chock full of good information for dog owners! From feeding times to getting your dog's attention before a walk, these play major factors in dog behavior.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Rewarding:
I think it's important that we reward what we want out of dogs and not just correct the unwanted behaviors.
Body Language:
Know your dog's body language when you are around a nervous dog!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
I think there is a big misconception out there that the average dog is happy-go-lucky. Speaking from experience, I don't think that's entirely true!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
We had an incident here during daycare last week and I'm flying solo for this podcast. Find out what happened!
What a wonderful time talking with Cheri and Art! We get to learn the story behind how they met. We also discussed some buzz words in the dog training industry. If you are a regular listener you will know that we have a new daycare program. We finally get the lowdown on where this all started.

This is the 1-day a year that causes so many problems but yet we don't prepare for it the other 364 days a year. Practicing makes you better and if your dog struggles now is the time to work on it for next year!

In this episode I talk about my camping experience and seeing a puppy growling while eating. I also had a conversation this past week about pre-correcting your dog. Matt and I had quite the conversation going about these experiences.
In this episode I talk about the board and train we have with us named Fenway. I also discussed what tools you should use and how freedom should understood with your dog.

I've been quite pleased with the new Vermont Dog Trainer Academy. It's such a fun group of dog owners to work with that all want to improve the relationship with their dogs. Here is a link to find out more about it.

Nick, one of my assistant trainers, and myself ventured into some new walking trails last week. Matt wasn't with us so we discussed it.
We also talk about how adding just a small amount of speed to the walk can sometimes help your dog's behavior.
Talking about thunderstorms never gets old because there are people and dogs that struggle with it all the time. Hopefully this episode can give you some insight and help you out a bit.

Jemma had one of those days the other day and wasn't feeling well. My poor wife had to deal with it since Jemma was home for the day. And we are happy to have our first Board & Train dog back with the new program!
I think it's important to know about tail behavior and what it means. Here is the 411 on some basic knowledge for you.

Not many people realize that when a dog shakes his/her entire body there is a VERY good reason for it. Especially when it comes to their behavior.

We decided to experiment a bit during our pack walk this week which was fun. Plus I had an interesting lesson that I had Matt help me with which led us down the road of talking about my beginnings of the business at my house.
Last week I made a big mistake with my dogs, just going too far putting them into an environment that was hard to handle. I make mistakes just like everyone else, I want you all to know that!
I had an interesting walk last Monday and Matt and I had a very in-depth conversation about what happened with a certain bloodhound with a certain tool.
It's such an amazing feeling knowing that I finally finished my goal of interviewing a dog trainer from every state. I took some time to sit down and go through the list of trainers that I spoke to including some highlights that resonated with me. I have been lucky to create many new relationships and have grown my network so I can help as many dogs as I can.
I am LOVING our new daycare program, we are fulfilling dogs more than we ever have. My staff is loving the program too as it's much more interactive than our previous program.

We wrapped up another week logging over 13 miles for our pack walks this week. I have some of the best clients as a couple of them gave us some supplies for the deer flies!
It was an honor and a pleasure to speak with Randy and discuss his 43 years of experience. His training started with taking a couple of beagles into the woods to start rabbit hunting and now he is expanding into a second training location in Nashville, TN. We spoke in depth about his 1987 appearance on David Letterman's show and what he now thinks of it.
Whether you are a dog owner or dog trainer there is some great advice in here. Grab an iced tea, sit back, and listen to this wonderful conversation with Randy Hare.
Randy's Website:

It's clear that our dogs are seeing humans differently lately. When we re-opened for business dogs that were fine with us became unsure. We have to remember to take our time with our dogs and this situation is a perfect example of why we should.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
The story this week has been the heat and the deer flies with the dogs. It's been fun walking the dogs as we have explored nearby trails and now we have worked our way up to a pack walk of 23 dogs at one time. Personally, I have had a heck of a time finding a good bug spray!!!
'Tis the season for those pesky insects that we dog owners have to deal with. There are a few different kinds of applications that you can use on your dog to protect them. It might be a good idea to treat your dog year-round now too!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Part 1 - Matt and I talk about what content we have been watching lately and how it's brought on many discussions.
Part 2 - Renae and Kirstin join us for our first ever staff chit chat. We are hoping to make these a regular episode. I would love to know what you think about the concept of the 4 of us talking about our week.
Nutrition plays an important role in our dog's health and behavior. We know that blueberries pack a punch but listen to how they can help out our dogs!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Well Matt and I only were able to record on Wednesday so this isn't a full episode. But wait until you hear the story of one of my lessons from last week.....let's just say it was 13 years in the making!
I have been getting a ton of feedback from this Facebook Live video that I did last week. And that feedback has been very positive from a number of my clients. I hope this comes off as a positive message that will relieve some stress for you.
Any time we grab hold of the leash we are communicating with our dog. Putting tension on the leash can either get your dog's attention or it can cause problems. Here is the 411 on leash tension.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
The heat has been the story this week with temps in the high 80's and low 90's. Matt and I also discuss my live stream about what the average dog really is. And for you dog owners, here is some advice as to what to do when your dog is too intense to meet guests at your house.
For some of us during quarantine we had a lot of time on our hands. And that means that we had time to train our dogs, even if it was just 5 minutes a day. This was my advice to everyone during quarantine that could also be useful for dog owners on their days off.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
We had another great week last week, and we still haven't missed a day of pack walks since we re-opened. Matt and I review some appointments, the Academy, and when boarding will open up.
Here is an update on my 2 dogs Jemma & May. Hard to believe that Jemma is 2 years old already!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Matt and I discuss how one dog has made a HUGE change with our new daycare model. Plus he got a new puppy so he talks about what his very first night looked like.
And then we get into some very deep conversation about dogs and what's been on our minds all week.
It was great to finally record a podcast with Tim. He is currently in the middle of an expansion and wait until you hear how small his previous facility was. Tim is a down to earth guy who wants to help people and learn as much as he can along the way. After hearing this episode you will know why Tim and I get along so well.
Now that people are starting to go back to work we are seeing big changes in the dogs these days. I talked about this almost 2 months ago that it was going to be a problem for some dogs.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Our 3rd week back with our new program is now in the books! The dogs continue to thrive under this new structure. Next week we will be back at full strength when Renae returns.
Picking the right rescue dog can be quite the task but there are certain things to keep in mind when doing so. There are also things that you shouldn't do.....it's a big decision either way you look at it.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
We are seeing HUGE differences in the dogs since our daycare program change. It's amazing how well all the dogs work with each other, and everything we do, we do together. Listen in to how Matt started giving lessons on his own this week.
Dogs can be seen as unpredictable, but if we aren't predictable in how we train them, work with them, and interact with them, how can we expect them to be predictable to us?
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Well our first week has concluded with our new program. Myself and my staff are loving how much we are working with the dogs on a more personal level. The dogs are getting fulfilled more than ever and I couldn't be more proud of the work we are getting done here. Listen in as one of my assistant trainers Matt Bettis joins me.
I've taken the time during quarantine to do my homework and develop a new structure for our daycare. Listen to this and let me know what you think!
Springtime for dogs means flea & tick medicine, hiking, and spending more time outside. But there is also a change in energy in the dogs too!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Robin and George are old friends and it was wonderful to chat with the both of them at the same time. We talked about how they met, the hardest part of being a dog trainer, and what we are all currently doing during quarantine.
This is the 300th episode of the podcast and I couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate than to have Cheri join me. Her presence, her ability to train dogs, and her quest to help women while still rescuing dogs is the reason why so many look up to her. If you are looking for a strong female presence, look no further.
Just a Quickie to let you all know what's going on in my world. Be sure to listen on Wednesday as it's episode 300 of the podcast!!!!!!
Wait until you hear about the fun Ashlea had with a bloodhound growing up. I think it's fair to say that Ashlea had tons of exposure to dogs growing up even before she started charging money for training. And then we talked about rattlesnakes, YIKES!
In every family I work with there tends to be a source of affection and a source of discipline for the dog. But did you know I've never seen 2 partners treat the dog exactly the same? So why should the dog treat each person the same?
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Duke and I have been back and forth trying to schedule this episode for quite some time. I had a great time listening to his story of how he got started. Plus, you will want to hear about a new program he is offering.
I had a great conversation with Sean, he is a fellow podcaster and trainer that has over 20 years of experience. We went deeper than normal into a situation I had with my dog Jemma and this will no doubt help dog owners everywhere!
This subject may sound simple, but a wrong move can cause major problems with your dog. Take a listen to what I think about dog dishes!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
These are strange times going through COVID-19 but we are soldiering through. I'm hoping we can open soon but I'm also trying to be patient. But I have some big names coming up for the podcast too! Stay tuned!
It was an amazing experience to have both Larry & Todd on the show. It was wonderful to be a part of this conversation and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
I think there is a big myth that if you neuter your dog that it will get rid of all the unwanted behaviors and make them a better dog. This isn't always the case, it's just part of the bigger picture.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Chelsea and I got on the subject of what we can do with our dogs inside during quarantine. Plus, wait until you hear what my newest goal is!
Where else are you going to find 4 different dog people on the podcast at the same time? We did a sort of "state of dog training" episode so I would love to know what you think of this one!
Janet Romagna - Rocksteady Kennels
Lauren White - Furever K9
Rose Navales - Broadway Bitches
This can be a touchy subject but I think it's important to talk about. If you have an overweight dog you are doing them a disservice. You are literally cutting years off of their life by constantly feeding them. Be sure to visit your vet should you have questions.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
I let Chelsea hit me withe first topic during this episode and little did I know it was going to be the EXACT same thing I was going to talk about! We never bring up to each other what we are going to talk about so this was pretty awesome!
I reached out to Mailey to talk about communicating with clients as we touched on it during her first appearance on the show. As a dog trainer or dog owner.....you will take something away from this episode that will teach you how to deal with others.
When we reward our dog we are not only rewarding what the body is doing but also what the mind is doing. You can reward a dog for sitting but it doesn't mean the mind is relaxed.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Chelsea is back with us and in Vermont! Listen to her moving adventures and what happened to Vermont Dog Trainer last week!
Dog owners with kids - we need to make sure our kids are staying safe. We can not get a dog to teach responsibility to young kids. It's too much for them to understand, and they don't understand dogs so why would we put our kids and dogs in a position to fail?
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
One of my assistant trainers Matt Bettis joined me again as Chelsea is still in the process of moving. These are interesting times right now and it's up to everyone to navigate our way through them.
What does 90 days mean to our dogs? Just proof that things need to move slowly with them. For some dogs, it takes up to 90 days to create a routine or pattern for them. That means that we need to patient with the and consistent with our communication.
With Chelsea in the middle of a big move I decided to fly solo and tell you what's going on in my world these days. Plus I had a visitor in my office while I was taping this episode.
It's important for us to keep our dogs safe especially during the winter months. May is my little Frenchie and has very short hair so I'm living it right now! Here are a few tips for you!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Stress can be positive or negative....as dog owners we don't want to stress out our dogs. As dog trainers, sometimes learning something new and exciting is stressful. We Believe You.....what does that mean? You will have to tune in to find out!
As you all know my Monday morning radio spot is dedicated to the local community. And since nothing had been mentioned about kennel cough I thought it would be a good idea to let the local community know about the kennel cough virus that was going around.

One of the biggest issues new dog owners have is how to stop their dog from begging at the dinner table and how to handle it. Here is some valuable information you will want to know!

During one of the busiest weeks of the year we ended up with a Kennel Cough outbreak which caused me to close to prevent the spread of it. Listen to what kind of a day I had last Monday!
Matt is one of my assistant dog trainers and I thought it would be good for everyone to get to know Matt's story. He has been working for me for 3 1/2 years and aspires to be a successful dog trainer.
Even though it may not be hunting season where you live, there are precautions you should be taking while walking your dog. Here are a couple of tips on how you can keep you and your dog safe.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
This was a great episode as Chelsea and I talked about two BIG issues. And when it comes to body language, when you are working with a dog with only 3 legs and 1 eye, you have to be on your game!
I think dog owners change things too quickly for our dogs if we think something isn't working. Too often it's a change of tools or methods which keeps the dog confused. Instead, stick to routine and let your dog understand the pattern you are trying to establish with your dog. Then your communication becomes clearer.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
I think dog food is one of those subjects you can't learn enough about. But listen in on how one key ingredient holds a major position in the list, and no I'm not talking about grain.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Chelsea brought up an excellent topic, how dog trainers learn their craft and the different ways to go about it. But yet there is really nothing out there that I know of that teaches you how to work with the clients. This is a great episode, hope you like it.

We had a spell of a couple of warm days here in Vermont and for us that means relief from the bitter cold. It also means that it's time to get the dogs out for a long walk or hike.
Plus, there have been so many puppies that have come through our doors that you will hear a tip for what I think is one of the best tools you can have for a puppy!

I know I know, it's not Halloween. But you don't need guests at your door in costumes in order to teach your dog how to react. I think you will get some good information from this episode!
Chelsea brought up a HUGE statement during this episode that you don't want to miss! How would dogs behave if it wasn't for humans?

There is a right way and a wrong way to hold a leash and it is a major factor in how you walk your dog! Plus, did you know it wasn't a good thing for your dog to follow you through the house?

There is nothing like adding veggies to your dog's diet. But you have to make sure you know what's good for them.

As dog owners we have always heard the phrase "once you adopt a dog you have to keep it for the rest of it's life". But sometimes that just isn't possible. I think you will enjoy this episode!

Chelsea brought up 2 great subjects that pertain to the dog trainer world. What kind of mistakes we make as trainers that we look back on, and a new service animal trend on a college campus. Wait until you hear about this one!

We are excited to offer a new service to our daycare clients which has been quite popular. Plus, listen to why some dog foods have a ton of crumbs in the bottom of the bag!

Collars are essential in the dog world, more importantly what ones should be used. Listen to what collars we don't allow in daycare, and what collars we suggest.

Hey Podcasters, please welcome my new Chit Chat co-host Chelsea Patenaude. She used to work for me in 2015 and now has her own dog training business going in Connecticut. I always enjoyed working with Chelsea and was hoping somehow our paths would cross again....so here we are!

Serena and I got knee deep into our own dog's feeding rituals. We actually haven't talked about it for some time but come to find out our rituals are very similar. This was also Serena's last episode as she has moved on from the dog training world. Join me in wishing her well in her new venture!
I think it's important to remember what's most important for puppies when we first get them, which is keeping them safe. How do we do that? By teaching them 2 of the most essential commands there are.......What are they? You will have to listen to find out!

Happy New Year Podcasters!
One of my clients from Maine sent this to me last week and the creativity is top notch! I may have to play this every year for Christmas!
I don't know how Lola does it, she has a farm with over 30 animals on 45 acres, plus has a dog training business on top of that. Working with dogs is in her blood as her grandfather used to show dogs back in the day. Wait until you hear what her one piece of advice to dog owners is!
I think it's EXTREMELY important that we have structured feeding for our dogs. Listen in to what can happen if we can't keep track of our dogs feeding rituals!
I think there is more fluidity instead of position when it comes to body language. What do you think?
It's been a great week with 2 very interesting lessons. But stay tuned for Monday's Chit Chat as Serena has a major announcement!
Food drive is done! And did you know what Glucosamine can do for your dogs?
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
What's up podcasters? Autopilot is an interesting subject to talk about because dogs LOVE routine. But sometimes that routine is more of a rut and can be a negative behavior.
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Hey Podcasters,
The food drive comes to a close today and we accumulated close to 2,400lbs of pet food. With all this talk about food I thought it would be a good idea to talk about how a dog digests it's food!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
I think it's important to have some sort of fire drill protocol in the dog daycare world. We do it for our kids, why not for our dogs? Do you have a plan in your home?
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Cris was wonderful to talk to as she has an extensive knowledge of performance dog training that includes agility and rally. You can hear her energy and passion in her voice during the interview. And who knew she would make a name for herself using her own Rottweilers for that type of training. Listen to what she has to say about how much she enjoys working with a Malinois that wants to work so badly that's its vibrating!
This is state # 46/50 and concludes the New England Region!
Serena and I spoke about how some dogs can connect with someone in an unhealthy way without the owner doing anything that encourages that kind of behavior. Sometimes it happens in our daycare setting and it's an interesting subject to talk about.
Would you believe the food drive is still going? Even though we accomplished our goal of 2,000 pounds we are still going strong! Plus listen to how your body language can effect the commands you give your dog.

There are 2 distinct times of year that I see a big change in how the dogs act, Spring and Fall. Why is that? Well you have to listen to find out.

Hey Podcasters,
I had a great time talking with Malaika. We share a lot of the same points of view when it comes to training dogs. I felt like I wanted to agree with everything she had to say. I think I could have talked with her for hours, hopefully someday our paths will cross. If you are in Nevada and you need some help with your dog, look her up, it will be worth it!
Hey Podcast peeps,
Last week Serena and I didn't have a chance to record our episode because of a family emergency that one of our staff members had. Plus Serena finally gets a chance to get back at me with her own Pop Quiz!
Hey Podcasters!
I think there is a big myth about when and where a leash should be used. It's amazing what kind of progress you can make with your dog inside your home using a leash. But it also can be done a couple different ways. Take a listen!
I hope everyone has a wonderful thanksgiving today. I am thankful for all you, my listeners and supports of the Vermont Dog Trainer Show! Have a great day, and wear stretchy pants today! :-)
There is nothing like seeing the orange signs that say "Road Construction Ahead". This tends to put a damper on our travel plans. And then you see the person with the "Stop/Slow" sign and you realize you might be slowing down to a stop. But you may be surprised to hear how this helps you deal with your dog.

Mike admits that he was a "troubled youth" which led him into working at a kennel which led him into Ring Work for the breeder. As he grew older he ended up in the army and was asked to work with the military dogs which was a very interesting conversation. Mike seems as cool as a cucumber and I'm sure the dogs he works with can sense it as well!
Hey Podcasters - It's been a heck of a week this week with the Pet Food Drive. You won't believe what we have accumulated so far. The outpouring of support has been TREMENDOUS!
Plus listen to how one of my private lessons went this week.
Look at how many warning signs a dog will give to avoid a conflict. Eye contact, growl, head low, show teeth, lunge, air snap, and then maybe a bite. These are a lot of signs that will happen before a dog jumps into a conflict because to me they don't want to be a part of it.
This pet food drive has taken on a personality of it's own already. We are receiving donations daily and I can't wait to see how much food we actually will receive!

Another change for our dogs has come and gone. Learn what you can expect from this time of year next fall. Dogs are creatures of habit and they enjoy knowing what to expect from you.

Stacia hasn't been training for long but you wouldn't know it. She has her career headed in the right direction and this type of thing only takes time. The more dogs she can work with the better off she will be. Her time spent grooming dogs and working in a home with adults with disabilities has helped her immensely with training dogs.
This is what I love about this podcast, I can talk with veteran trainers with 30+ years of experience and also trainers with less than 5 years of experience and we can all learn something.
Serena came to me with the idea of doing a pet food drive. Honestly my original image of it was not something I wanted to do. However the more I thought about it the more I wanted to do it, but do it big!
Plus listen how I gave Serena a pop quiz in Vermont Dog Trainer Culture!
Only 6 states left in the dog trainer project! Plus listen to how many males and females I've interviewed. Want over 700 years of dog training experience in one place? Well here it is!
Hey Podcasters - This past week we had our first snow storm of the year so I thought it would be important to talk about getting your dog ready for it. Also, how does a raw marrow bone will help your dog's teeth!

We have many objects in our house that can be used like a training tool. However you may be surprised to hear how much a door can help you establish the behavior you desire in the entry area of your home.

Krystal had such a refreshing voice and confidence about her during our interview. She has created some wonderful systems that has allowed her to have 2 different facilities in 2 different states. Along with her husband Eric, they are training dogs in both South Carolina and Indiana. Every heard of the OODA Loop? Well you are about to!
Serena and I went back and looked at the tape from our small scuffle last week. You will be surprised to hear how long it lasted. Plus we talk about why I decided to bring our Board & Trains back into our training programs.
Tyler and I took a trip down memory lane with all the dogs our family had growing up. It was a nostalgic journey that led to some stories that we hadn't told each other. Truly, my favorite episodes to date!
If you ever wanted to know what my upbringing was like around dogs, this is the episode for you!
This "Gas Tank" analogy hit me last week and I've been using it quite a bit lately. Maybe it's because I'm thinking about going into the winter and how the dogs will become more pent up with energy because they can't get outside as much in the winter.

Here we go again, another incident with a service dog on a plane. AT some point the airlines are going to stiffen their policies with dogs on the plane. Until then, we will continue to run into issues like this.

This was the furthest the podcast has reached as Leonard and I had a 6 hour time difference at the time of this recording. We had to navigate some delays in our conversation but we pulled it off. Plus you might be interested in how we met and how our first conversation went down.
Leonard has a wonderful story on how 9/11 created a ripple effect in his career as a dog trainer which eventually led him to working on TV shows. Would love to know what you think of this interview.
You've heard how the workshop went from my point of view now hear how it went to Serena and the staff. Plus while we were outside with the dogs this week we had a little bit of a scuffle between 2 dogs. Owners were notified and no dogs were hurt but these times can get intense. Listen to how it all went down from how I saw it and how Serena saw it.
What a week it's been! Between the workshop, an off day, a scuffle, and a rainy Halloween it's been interesting. However it could have gotten me down but I stuck to my guns and made it a positive outcome!
If we don't pay enough attention, we will miss everything that dogs try to teach us. But if we slow down, we will see everything. Do you want to understand your dog better?
I think it's important to always be aware of your dog's state of mind. So why not teach your dog how you want them to act before the walk and how to exit your home with the right state of mind. This is all about building your dog's map of the places you can go with them.

Linn just wrapped up his Consultation Clinic here at my facility in Vermont. His workshop was primarily consultations - 13 hours worth to be exact, and this was a workshop like none other! Linn has been mentoring me for 14 months now and he has worked a ton of dogs in front of me. If you have a mentor, make sure he/she are working dogs in front of you, hands on!
And by the way - not one correction, pop, poke, yank, or shove was given to any of the dogs while they were here. It was all done with precise leash handling and sensitivity.
Serena brought up some great subjects on this episode. We had a dog locally that ate a marijuana plant and she asked me a great question about visiting other people's houses that have dogs. This episode was one of my favorite ones so far!
Earlier this week I had a client of mine refer to their dog as a "Free Agent". I was so intrigued by this term for her dog so as I dug deeper I quickly realized he was "on his own" for decision making at home. Listen to this episode as I will describe what's best for the dog.
Recently I posted a video on how to use a door to help control your dog. Plus it's hunting season in Vermont and it's important to keep your dog safe. Lastly, why steel bowls are best when it comes to feeding your dog.
Engaging your dog can come in many ways including training sessions, walks, new people, or being a part of your every day activities. Learn how you can expose your dog to objects, people, and routine activities.

Michael has been in the dog business for many years and you can hear his experience as he speaks. He has some great insight into "structural migration" and how "silence is golden". He's a former k-9 officer turned pet dog trainer and listen in as he shares his experiences with you.
As you all know I visited the Green Mountain Falconry School last week and what an experience it was. There are so many similarities between dogs and hawks and yet many differences. Check it out!
The project is almost complete as 39 trainers/39 states are in the books. Today's tip is the difference between structured feeding vs free feeding for your dog. Listen to my advice as it will give you some insight into your dog's over all well being.

Swimming for a dog is not only great exercise but it also used as physical therapy for some dogs. During the warmer months it is a great way to help cool them off. Here is some concepts on how to get your dog to enjoy the water.

I think it's important for us in the dog industry not to label certain breeds so behaviors will then be accepted. Plus, we have had some amazing dogs come through our doors and they will always leave a stamp on my business. Recently we said goodbye to an amazing Akita named Yoko who taught many puppies and adult dogs along the way.
I finally got the chance to explain how the puke post came about. It's now been seen my 2.1 million people and is by far the most successful post I have ever put on Facebook.
The big question from last week was, "are pumpkin seeds okay for dogs?" The answer might surprise you!
Plus my "Puke Post" on the Vermont Dog Trainer Facebook Page has gone viral......be sure to check it out!

I can't believe Roland and I have been doing this show for 3 years. We have only missed 2 shows in those 3 years of doing this weekly show. We have covered subjects from Nutrition to Socializing to answering listener questions. Thank you to everyone who has supported this show and for sending me the wonderful feedback.

This episode probably means more to me that you may think. As a trainer I've seen some stuff, good and bad. But today marks the start of my inner healing that I needed so desperately. You'll have to listen to know what I'm talking about. Thanks for being by my side as I navigate my way into being the best dog trainer, friend, boss, co-worker I can be.
It's been an interesting week with the Scout Video. It's now over 16k views and still climbing. I've been praised, and also slammed for how I handled the group that day. At least the majority has been positive feedback.
In this video I will explain my thoughts of the video so you can get an in-depth look at why I did what I did.
We've had an influx of puppies lately and when this was recorded we had 10 dogs under 2 years old and 6 of them under 1 year old. The energy level is up, but it's great working with fresh minds that are ready and willing to learn!

What do you do when a dog is coming at you off leash while you are walking your dog on leash? Here is my advice.

The big news last week was that I adopted a new Frenchie puppy on Sunday. You will be able to hear how the first few days were with her and what my experience has been like with a small dog.
Plus, wait until you hear what my friend Julie Hart had to say about screening potential adopters. She was my New Mexico dog trainer and you can listen to her episode at the link below.

As you know I adopted an 8-week old French Bulldog this past Sunday. When I taped this Facebook Live Stream on Monday it had been 24 hours since she came into our home. Take a listen to what I did for those first 24 hours.

As you have probably heard by now I've got a new French Bulldog Puppy named May. I speak with Craig Ladd about her and also offer up a Nutrition Tip for those of you that want to learn a little bit more about dog food.

If you aren't able to take your dog to work with you, your dog is sitting at home collecting energy. So while you burn energy your dog is gaining energy. It's important to help your dog burn off energy in order to keep your dog from picking up bad habits. Hope you enjoy this one!

This weeks marks a new beginning for us here at Vermont Dog Trainer. We are no longer accepting socially unacceptable dogs in our daycare and no more board & trains.
We also get into Serena's mind a bit and learn what she has been going through with clients during her private lessons.
I'm back to doing my Monday Night Live's every Monday at 6:30pm. If you miss them I will be adding them as podcasts and publishing them every Friday. This past Monday I spoke about the importance of including the owner in all of the training sessions instead of doing a board and train. Enjoy!
Every Monday morning for the past 6+ years I have been doing a Monday morning radio spot for 93.9 WLVB. I do it over the phone and usually cover anything from reservations to behavior tips. This past week I did my best to record it over the phone with radio host Craig Ladd. The audio isn't 100% but I'm hoping you enjoy it!

Even though school has started I think you will see how schedule changes can effect your dogs. Now you can be prepared for school vacations and the end of the school year in 2020. Enjoy!

Big changes are happening here at Vermont Dog Trainer. For the first time in years I have felt a weight lift off of my chest and the future is bright! You're gonna love this episode!
Slowing down has been my soapbox lately and I have been telling all of my clients how important it is. Construction is the perfect analogy for slowing down. Hope you enjoy this one!
Biggest change from last week is that Nick Draper is back working with us. He was one of my assistant trainers who took another job last October. However we connected a few weeks ago and I told him he could have his old job back. As a staff we are back to 100% and the future is bright!

We have a lot of changes starting here at Vermont Dog Trainer and the future is bright. Plus listen to why dog trainers don't want to take in project dogs as one of their own.

There are all sorts of different methods and ideas about how to socialize your puppy. For me, it's being a part of a group on a daily basis all the while providing structured down time if the dog can't do it him/herself.

At the airing of this radio segment we were celebrating having Jemma for a year. Recently she just completed her 2nd heat and we just had her spayed 2 weeks ago. She's growing up to be a lady and it's time for me to continue her education now that she's done with her healing.

Another Learn, Practice, Master, Begin Again workshop is in the books. This was a wonderful group of students that were so willing to learn about dog psychology. The "Real World" Consultations were the biggest hit.
We sat down with Erynn Connors who just opened up her daycare facility in Rutland, Vermont. You can find her on Facebook at "Wanderlust Canine Services"
Both Serena and myself had an eventful week between her wedding and my trip to Ohio. It was fun to catch up with her and we had a nice talk about muzzles too. These episodes are gaining in popularity, the feedback I'm getting on has been wonderful to hear. Please share this with your friends, we love sitting down to talk about dogs, the facility, and anything else that pops up!
Rosanne hired me to visit her facility in Athens, Ohio to teach her and her staff how to socialize dogs. When she opened her facility it grew quicker than she could ever imagine. I visited her last month for 3 days and had a BLAST working with everyone there. We talked about safety, how to get dogs out of kennels, and how to socialize groups of dogs so she can run a safe daycare. At the end of the 3 days we sat down to record this podcast and discuss her experience. ENJOY!
I'm humbled that there are so many people listening to my podcast. I took a moment to reflect on the past 2+ years and what it has all meant to me. I hope you are getting something from this podcast and if you are truly enjoying it, please share it with your dog friends.
Well after I got back from vacation we had some overnight drama at work. Nobody was hurt but we can look back it now and laugh. Let's just say Serena had her work cut out for her. LOL
Can you teach an old dog new tricks? You sure can but, and it's a big BUT! They have been practicing the same behaviors for several years so it takes a lot of work and patience to get anywhere with the older dogs. But when you see those light bulb moments on the dog's face it's a feeling like nothing else!
Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
Intensity and Sensitivity play a large role in understanding dog behavior. What most dog owners aren't aware of is that dogs that lunge and act out are some of the most sensitive dogs, but it also looks intense. Confused yet? Take a listen!
If you have ever watched dogs play, you will see that that may change roles or positions. One will be standing while the other lying down and then they switch roles. It's a healthy way for dogs to play, practice, and get along.

Have you been walking your dog on leash down a trail and see a dog coming at you off leash? Then you hear the voice say "My Dog's Friendly" from a distance. Meanwhile you're working on your dog's over-reactivity and your response to the distant voice is "Mine's Not". Listen in for my advice on how to handle the situation.
Coming home after vacation can be tiring! But if you don't bring your dog(s) with you then they will be looking to get right back into routine. Don't slack off now, snap into routine as quickly as you can!
The rules of the game are an important aspect in the world of socializing dogs. Understanding how dogs set boundaries first followed by play is essential in the dog world. Listen in to how I discovered this in my own setting and how it pertains to your dog at home.
Can big and small dogs get along? Are they supposed to? Should they fight? Dogs are social creatures and it's instinctual for them to get along with each other under the right circumstances.
It was a pleasure talking to John. He owns a Belgian Malinois and he has some great advice for people that are looking to adopt one. He seems like a down to earth guy with a bunch of experience. I'm happy to have John be a part of the "50 State Family".
It's been an amazing 5 years with Serena, she has excelled in her job more than I could ever ask. I first hired her on as an employee that would come in at night to let the dogs out. 5 years later she is my right hand "wo-man" and is one of the hardest workers I've ever been around. Take a listen as we stroll down memory lane!
I sat down with Amanda, Melissa, and Linn at the conclusion of the workshop last Friday. It was such a fun group and we all had a great time. It's amazing to hear how my "story" of things not feeling right brought these 2 women to this workshop. Enjoy!
For some dog owners 1 hour can make a huge difference in their dog's lives. Take a listen on some suggestions I have.

It was nice to talk to Kelley....I have never met anyone from Nebraska. She has an interesting story that ranges from a degree in Sociology to studying primates to where she is now in the dog world. You could say that her whole life has culminated into working with dogs. Would love to know what you think, please leave a review and subscribe to the podcast!
Dogs are creatures of habit and it's important to recognize that there can be good and bad habits. Creating new habits will help you in teaching your dog what you want. Bad habits are usually created from the dog making their own decision with what they want. Take a listen!

Serena and I sit talk about the dogs that have come to us that we haven't been able to help. This is a touchy subject but I felt that it needed to be talked about.
It was great to finally sit down with Serena again and enjoy our conversations. We get a lot of great feedback from these episodes from our listeners. We hope you enjoy this episode......there are some really good tips in this episode!
You are going to love David's story, from the age of 10 having an aggressive dog to competing with a Belgian Malinois at the Mondioring World Championships in 2016 it was quite a journey. Along the way he learned from some of the great trainers that specialize in sport dogs. Now he has facility of his own and he's training dogs on a daily basis just south of Salt Lake City.

It was great to talk to Tom especially since he's in my home state of Vermont. Tom has been honored in the Vermont State of Police K-9 Hall of Fame. He and his dog Stoney still holds the record for the most drug finds in the state. You are going to LOVE this one!
It's important to train your dog in baby steps. We have a saying around here, "don't go too far too fast" which means don't challenge your dog before he/she is ready for it. I can't stress it enough, take your time!
It's true, not all dog trainers are alike and that's what makes this industry wonderful. As a dog owner you get to choose what feels best for you and your dog. Do your research, ask around, and go with the trainer that's the best fit.
This is an issue that affects many dog owners today. A dog that won't let you have a toy, bone, or food if you go to reach for it. What do you do?
Too often we are trying to focus on the quick fix to our dogs issues, but sometimes taking our time, having patience, and working slowly can help us move faster.

What a wonderful conversation I had with Kelly. It was refreshing to hear of her work with packs of dogs, pack therapy, and her opinions on dealing with clients. She has so much experience from working dogs as a child, dealing with Katrina dogs, and now studying dogs full time while taking care of her own pack of 15 dogs. You are going to enjoy this one!

This episode is jump started in the first 2 minutes after Mike explains how he couldn't hear anything until he was 4-years old. From that point until now dogs have been in Mike's blood from pet dog training to law enforcement training and everything in between. If you are in the Plymouth, MI area and need help with your dog, check Mike out.

This might be some of the best advice I've given out. If you take your dog to a park, path, or to play dates this is the episode for you! I've learned so much lately from observing dogs meeting each other and playing for the first time. It's all about how they establish rules first before they get right into playing. They need to be taught to one another before the game starts. Enjoy!
Ken and Lisa have an interesting dynamic from trainer & client, to mentor & protege, to husband & wife. Meanwhile there are still dogs to train and it doesn't look like they are slowing down anytime soon. Take a listen and let me know what you think! Send your emails to vermontdogtrainershow@gmail.com.
It's been a BUSY couple of weeks with President's Week and also School Vacation week. We have some dogs boarding with us that we haven't seen in a while. Previously we would have dealt with these dogs differently because that's all we had known. But since we now know how to deal with these tougher boarding dogs it has opened up a whole new world for us. Take a listen and email me to let me know what you think.

Hope you all are enjoying the newest show on the podcast. Serena and I love sitting down once a week to talk about what's happening in our world. We would LOVE to know what you think about it. Email us at Vermontdogtrainershow@gmail.com!
Take 1 behavior that you don't like that your dog shows and I can guarantee you can break that behavior down into many steps. Once you determine what the very first step is in the bad behavior then you know when and where to interrupt it.
It was a pleasure talking to David about his training. I love how he explained how he can train dogs at a high level but still allows them to be dogs. We can learn a lot from people that don't do what we do every day. His easy-going personality no doubt has an effect on the dogs he works with. If you are in the Missouri/Texas area make sure to look him if you want your retriever trained the right way.
I think this is one of the best episodes of Chitchat there has been so far. Serena received some pretty rough news this week and she showed the utmost professionalism with it. We also talked about teaching classes and our new system for our daycare. Let me know what you think, please review and rate us on iTunes!
I don't get the "Fake it til you make it" statement in dog training. I think it's one of the biggest farces out there. Plus, listen in on why I decided to keep a board and train dog longer at no charge to the client. Please leave a review on iTunes if you enjoyed listening!
I truly believe we talk too much. I also think we don't actually pay attention to the words we are saying to our dogs. Take a listen and let me know what you think.
It was quite the week for Serena and myself. It started out as an emotional Friday for the entire staff. I also received a phone call in which I told the owner I wasn't for her. Plus we messed around and played with the gates to help desensitize one of our daycare dogs.
Serena has been working for me for almost 5 years now and she is what I call my right hand wo-man! As I mentioned before we decided to do a weekly show where we talk about what's going on here in our facility, the good times, bad times, and everything in between. I hope you enjoy these, would love to know what you think. Email me vermontdogtrainershow@gmail.com.
It's always great to speak with a fellow New Englander. Martin and I had a great conversation about daycare, music, and recall. This can be such a dirty word in the dog training world. But what you may not know is that dog training is a discipline, driving your car is a discipline, and karate is a discipline. Learn how discipline pertains to the relationship with your dog.
Loved talking to Brad and I LOVED this episode. I had a list of questions to ask Brad and I only got to 3 of them. We had such a great vibe going this truly seemed like a real conversation among 2 dog trainers. This was an interview that turned into a straight up conversation about dog training. I really hope you enjoy this one, I know I did!
This is a big issue in the dog training world as we are seeing more and more dogs on Prozac and other forms of this type of medication. Here is my two cents on the subject.

It's safe to say I'm getting back to my roots. I started with Dog Psychology, practiced Pressure & Release (or what I thought it was), dabbled in Positive Reinforcement, and now I'm back to Dog Psychology bringing with me everything I've learned from other philosophies.

You won't meet a sweeter person than Hanna Seitamma but don't let her voice or demeanor fool you, she is one hell of a trainer! Her knowledge of nutrition is deeper than most and you will hear why. We got on the subject of how we converse with clients that is GOLD for both trainers and owners. ENJOY!
I'm a firm believer of giving respect to the dog before they give it to you. It's disrespectful to put a tool on a dog and immediately use it to communicate with them. We have to show them respect and take our time.....as trainers it's our job to take the time.
I have to say that once I started talking with Cheryl it just felt like we clicked. This was such an easy going conversation and you can tell that she is a true professional. I loved her poise, confidence, and transparency. I hope you enjoy this episode.....I know I did.
This is probably the highlight of my all my podcasts so far. To be able to sit down with 2 other dog trainers and just talk about dogs, dog training - the good, bad, and ugly that's out there. I wish more dog owners knew about this concept. Too many times I dogs that are stressed out being petting and told "everything is going to be okay". What they don't know is they are nurturing that behavior literally telling the dog - "this is how I want you to be". Take a listen!

This was my first time interviewing 2 trainers that work and live together and I think you will notice they are very much alike yet different. Both Mailee and Lise are working towards a common goal of better behaved dogs but sometimes the dogs react differently towards them. This is extremely common with spouses in the same home and they give some excellent information on how to handle those tough situations.
The grain free diet is getting to be a heated debate among dog owners, trainers, veterinarians, and scientists. What's all the fuss about? Here is my take on the debate.

I think as dog owners we give affection to our dog without even realizing we are doing it. And when this happens we aren't aware that the affection we are giving to our dogs is nurturing their current state of mind. I don't think our dogs "turn off" as they are always aware of their surroundings. Here is my take on what affection means to your dog.

When Linn was here to work with us he used a term I had never heard before - Social Pressure. Now that he made us aware of it I see it everywhere! Here is my explanation of what it is and how it can manifest itself into certain behaviors!
I don't think you will find a nicer guy than Dan. He has packed a wealth of experience in a short amount of time attending both levels of TCW, working in rescue, and working for a few different dog daycare's. He grew up in a house where his mom was helping rescue dogs so he's been with dogs since day 1. Enjoy the conversation, I don't think you will find a nicer guy!
We as dog owners want a solution to everything that our dog does wrong. We want the solution to the problem yet we never look at how to be proactive with our dogs so the problem doesn't exist! Be proactive, not reactive!
This is something that has been on my mind lately and I wanted to share it with all of you. I am a BIG believer in what my gut is telling me and I try to listen to it all day. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I go against it to this day but I'm learning as I go.
There are a million dog training programs out there, why? Because there is not one way to train millions of dogs.
Where have I been? Working with dogs and not having much time for anything else. But it’s been a fun couple of weeks seeing dogs the way I never have. Using sensitivity - theirs and mine - to better our communication. This is what I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m a beginner at it to a degree. But I’m looking forward to this journey, and I’m happy you are on it with me.
It was a true pleasure to speak with Kevin.....from his hospital bed. He was currently in between surgeries when we recorded the podcast and working his way through anesthesia. What attracted me to Kevin was learning that he breeds, raises, and trains Labrador Retrievers from his wheelchair! He has a new project called Wheels on Water that you will definitely want to hear about.
To all the trainers out there, this will give you a new found respect for what we do on a regular basis and how he's beating the odds with what he's been able to accomplish.
It was great having Linn here...I saw depths of working with dogs that I have never seen before and I know we are just getting started. As a staff we have already implemented some changes and it's worked wonders with the dogs in our care. When the dust settled at the end of the week we sat down to have a casual conversation about the week, the dogs, techniques, and what the future holds. If you would like to learn how you can learn from Linn, listen in as we are hosting him for a workshop here in Vermont in October.
Linn's time here is done.......for now....and I have a sense of completion. I have a TON of practice to do but when it comes to dogs I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty!
Nearing the end of the week....so many transformations in the dogs it's almost countless.
I have a range of emotions going through my head today.....can't seem to process everything.
My first day of having Linn Boyke spending the day with me at my facility was eye opening to say the least. With his help we saw 3 MAJOR transformations in 3 different dogs that was stunning! To see a dog that started in the corner of the room to wanting to be a part of the group and be social was heartwarming. I hope you join me on this journey as I vlog my way through the week on YouTube (Vermont Dog Trainer) and what I am experiencing both personally and professionally. If you can't join me on YouTube, no worries I will be uploading my vlogs to the podcast this week.
Be sure to listen to Linn's podcast "Beyond the Dog"
We've all heard it a million times, don't leave your dog in a car with all the windows up in the summer! But have you heard what you can do to help keep your dog hydrated and safe during those warm spells? Take a listen!

I'll be the first to admit that I don't have all the answers or there are some situations that I can't advise without seeing the dog. That happened during the live stream but because I'm building such a network I can now find a trainer for an owner that's struggling with their dog.
This is a fun episode with the subjects above, if you're a dog owner you will get something out of this episode!
You may or may not know that I don't teach dogs to sit that come to us for training. Sitting isn't the problem, the dog's state of mind is. A dog can be aggressive and just because it sits down doesn't mean you have taken the aggression away. I am not teaching Jemma to sit, listen in to hear my reasons why.

This is always a touchy subject with dog owners. There are owners that want their dogs to romp off leash and have a good time and there are owners that can't take their dogs off leash and need a little guidance with socializing. Either way, you should always be thoughtful of who you might run into and how to best handle the situation. Letting your dog run up to another dog off leash is playing Russian Roulette. Let me know what you think about this one!
Courtesy 93.9FM WLVB
Let's face it, neither one of these options is ideal for your dog. One causes pain, one causes an odor that we can never seem to get rid of. Would love to know what you think!

Man did I ever get some flack about this Live Stream! There are a lot of dog owners out there that actually think their 4-legged furry dog is actually a human! Needless to say this topic gets me going and I cut loose during this live stream to get my point across!
P.S. HOPE YOU LIKE THE NEW INTRO ;-)
I learned about this concept a couple of months ago when I was talking with Linn Boyke (previous dog trainer interview). I had sent him a video of a dog playing and he quickly responded and informed me of the sparring vs. playing concept. It made a TON of sense to me and ever since then I have kept a closer watch on how the dogs play during daycare.

During these summer months we deal with all sorts of weather. Some of it our dogs are okay with, some are not. Either way we should try to do something about it. Whether you want to make it a training session or a play session you should make thunderstorms as enjoyable as possible for your dog.
It's always great talking to a fellow New Englander. She loves to educate dog owners about their dogs and to help them through the tough times. She says the 3 biggest problems dog owners are having are leash reactivity, protectiveness, and anxiety. Go ahead and hit play.....sit back and relax.....and let me know what you think!
Reid is a down to earth kinda guy and I always enjoy talking with him as we've known each other for a few years. We have always been able to toss ideas off each other and pick each others brains when needed. He tells a great story of one of the worst bites he's ever received.....and as always bites are learning experiences for dog trainers. But it didn't slow Reid down - he's got a great thing going and his wife has been by his side the entire time. Take a listen!
This has been a focus of mine for a few days and I would love to know your opinion on this clip. I think stress can be a good thing......to a degree. What do you think?
It's that time of year again and thunderstorms can be quite tough on some dogs. Here are some ideas that might help you with your dog.

This is probably one of the most common questions dog trainers get. Except now I am living it! This show was taped before we got the puppy so I had my game plan set before the puppy arrived. Rule # 1 - don't let the puppy explore the house! Take them for a walk first! One thing I will tell you is that Jemma, my new puppy, isn't being crated as long as I thought she would. She sleeps about 10 hours in the crate at night plus about 3 hours during the day split up into 2 different sessions. However she is also sleeping at home while she is tethered with us before bedtime.

Tom has quite the story from starting his business in California doing board and trains while he was living on a boat to now being established in Colorado. It was interesting to hear the differences of the dogs he worked with in both states. He's known as "the pit bull guy" and says he's comfortable with it especially owning 4 of his own. If you are in his area be sure to look him up.
This is a great subject that many dog owners struggle with. If you have a dog that is overexcited to go for a walk (which most dogs are and that's when the pulling starts) then this is the episode for you. This will give you a better idea on how to handle that situation and what to accomplish first, which is a relaxed dog before you walk out of the door!
It's safe to say that Nelson has a different take on dog training. When he takes dogs in for training he will keep them as long as he has to which could be for months. He also calls himself the "anti-christ" to dog trainers because he makes them think differently about what they do. From the big state of Texas, meet Nelson Hodges!
BUCKLE UP! This conversation with Ken was a fun ride, from talking about his start in his living room to now having a dog training complex that consists of 600 acres including planes, trains, and automobiles. Ken and his staff train these dogs for the military, federal agents, NSA, and The Pentagon. It's the premier facility in the country for training these types of dogs that end up saving lives, sniffing out drugs, and protecting some of the highest ranked officials in other countries. Sit back and relax, this one might get a little intense!
There are some female dog trainers in this country that are truly amazing at what they can do, Robin is one of them. From an early age she was observing all sorts of animals and her story from wanting to be a vet tech to a near fatal accident is truly captivating. We had a great conversation about workshops and how the attendance is always lop-sided between men and women. I enjoyed talking with Robin and I think you will be able to resonate with her on many levels.
If you don't know Julie you will quickly find out her passion is in rescue. Fostering over 100 dogs and finding homes for them is truly her niche. Her website www.rescuedogsresponsibly.com is quickly gaining recognition as the place to go to do research before adopting a dog. She gives the listeners a ton of insight into the rescue world and make sure to listen to the breed game.....I might have changed it up a bit! ;-)
I am really liking my Monday Night Live Stream on Facebook. I have such an interactive group every week that always comes up with some great questions. You will notice I got thrown an absolute curveball in the beginning of this one.....take a listen as I lost my train of thought! LOL
I believe that after hearing this episode with Mark you will feel like you have known him for a while. I enjoyed picking his brain about his experience with the K9 dogs in law enforcement and German Shepherds. He loves to create fun outlets for dog owners to have with their dogs which is refreshing to hear. Plus he opens up about a life changing experience that you won't want to miss.
Interhousehold dog fighting is one of the toughest things to deal with as a dog owner. Dogs have to be kept separate all the time with gates, crates, kennels, or leashes. It's a tough way to live and I don't wish it on anyone. Get some insight on my thoughts on this subject!
This is a subject I come across a lot with my clients and I think it's a natural to do as a dog owner. Comparing our past dogs with our current dogs can be okay if you can understand they are different personalities and temperaments. But the problem occurs when owners don't understand why there are differences and wonder why their current dog isn't like their past dogs.

I hear this statement a lot "my dog barks at everything" or "my dog is afraid of everything". In this episode we dive deep into the reasons and how to start the recovery process. Enjoy!
There are two reasons dog will use eye contact for a sustained period of time. Both can result in two totally opposite responses. I think you will find this show EXTREMELY informative!

There is no other dog training tool with more controversy than the remote collar. Certain countries have banned it's use while others are in the process of banning it. I admit it, I LOVE technology even though I can't keep up with it. It was fun talking with Greg about his background, the first e-collar he created, and the AMAZING products he's working on that someday we as trainers will be using. This is a quick conversation but it's full of great information from his beginnings to how he's working on regulations of it's use in other countries.
Everyone was waiting for the big giveaway results from the picture I put up on FB. I had a picture of some dogs all in close proximity and the first person with the right answer gets to spend a day at our facility. With over 100 guesses it turned to be quite popular very quickly!
This is one of the most popular questions from dog owners - how do I get my dog to come when called. There are many different methods out there from Koehler's Long Line Method to using a remote collar. In this episode you get the details on just exactly how long it takes to get a reliable recall with your dog.

I hear a lot of stories of dogs being picky eaters and how their owners have tried dozens of different kinds of dog food. There are some solutions to this problem and hopefully after listening to this episode it will give you some solutions if you have this problem with your dogs.

With over 40 years in the business working with dogs there is a reason he's called "Uncle George". His down to earth style of breaking everything down to what he calls the "awesome sauce" simplifies dog training. Listen as he discusses the worst bite he ever received, his opinion on training tools, and his experience with a newly adopted puppy. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!
I think you will enjoy and resonate with Todd's story if you are a dog owner. He admits he "did everything wrong" with his German Shepherd puppy so he sought out the help of Cesar Milan only to be referred out to another trainer. From there his life took a turn that would lead him down a road to eventually work for Cesar. His story of several dogs in his home when he was only supposed to have one will give you a good laugh. Todd seems like a fun guy and I had a great time interviewing him. Everyone will get something out of this conversation.....Enjoy!
I love doing the Facebook Live Stream every Monday night at 8:15pm. It gives me a chance to really interact with everyone that follows our page "Vermont Dog Trainer".
We cover how to start training your dog the recall command, a little help with reactive dogs, and more viewer questions. Hope you enjoy this one!
This can be a touchy subject. There is no doubt we all love our dogs but I believe sometimes we love them too much to the point that it's detrimental to the dog. Too much love and not enough structure is a recipe for disaster. Take a listen to this episode one why too much love is too much for your dog to handle.

In the dog training world we are always trying to find the way "in" to work with a dog. Everyone thinks food is the only way to train a dog but there are other ways too. Hope you enjoy this one!

I have to say I felt right at home talking to Paula. Maybe it's the fact that she's right next door to Vermont in New Hampshire. Or maybe it's the fact that she spent so many years in the special education field that she is so caring and gentle with the dogs. Talking to Paula feels like you are talking to someone you have known for a long time. And if she's this way over the phone, I can only imagine how the dogs resonate with her energy and communication.
If you know Jason then you know he's a pretty down to earth guy. Hearing his story of how he "stole" his neighbors dog for his dog to play with when he was 7 years old was GREAT! He is very well known for his Large Field Socializing where he can have anywhere between 80-130 dogs in a field with their owners at the same time. His journey started in a camp where he would train dogs for 2 weeks at a time. Now he is planning a trip to Spain where he was invited to teach a workshop. So grab a cup of coffee (or an iced tea if you are in the south) and enjoy a great conversation with dog trainer Jason Vasconi.
This was my biggest Facebook Live Stream to date. And I've received a bunch of compliments on how we properly use this tool. It's not a tool for everyone and it has more controversy around it that any other tool. I'm not here to push it on anyone, just here to explain how we use it, and use it gently. Enjoy!
You guys are going to enjoy this one! Mailey talks about her journey from working at a vets office for 2 weeks to taking over the classes at her local humane society after she attended just one class as an employee. She is an experienced trainer who now sits on the board of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) and she is well known in the industry for how she runs her classes. This is such a relaxing interview and it was such joy to talk with Mailey. She is currently working on her "people skills" so she can better communicate with dog owners......something we might revisit in another episode.
If you know Kayce you know that she has been working, playing with, and training animals since she was a little girl. From growing up with flying squirrels to swimming with sea lions it's safe to say she has almost done it all. That's until she created her Syn Alia Training Systems (you can learn more at www.synalia.com). She has created a whole new way to communicate with animals on a level that you probably thought unrealistic. Her dedication to animals and their well being has made a major impact not just on dog training but to exotic animals as well. Grab a drink, sit down and just listen to the wealth of knowledge she has to offer all of us.
I know there are a bunch of dog owners out there that have dogs that are picky eaters. Here a few ideas on how to fix that issue, remember dogs aren't naturally grazers like cows and horses. That's one of the issues.....learn how to fix this one among others.
Here is some great insight into how we socialize dogs that come to us for training. I get a lot of requests on how we handle it and I explain our step by step process in this episode! Enjoy!
Trust me when I say things are about to get deep! You may have to listen to this episode more than once. Linn's view on dog training is unlike any other that I have come across so far. His story from being a "dog parker" to literally stalking Cesar Millan and then working along Cesar during their most recent workshop is a fun ride. And then there is the "Pressure Matrix" that he is working on that just might revolutionize dog training. Buckle up!
Well it's that time of year again and here in the northeast it's been COLD!!!!!!! With temperatures dropping well below zero it's hard to get outside with your dog for walks and fun activities especially if you have a short-haired dog. In this episode you will get some great ideas to have fun with your dog inside all the while challenging them mentally! Enjoy!

I get asked the same questions this time of year - "what can I do with my dog outside in the snow if it's warm enough for him/her"? Roland and I discuss some of your options as to what you can do. Depending on your dog they might enjoy playing in the snow more than playing in the summer time!

State 12 of 50: For those of you that don't know Bill Creasy you won't forget him after this episode. Where do I begin? Bill trains Service Dogs for 18-24 months before they are placed in the home, a real commitment on his part as he is doing 100% of the work, 5 sessions a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Usually 5 dogs at a time! Get some insight into how they get the scent from a diabetic so they can train the dog on that scent!

After seeing some of Mark's YouTube videos I knew I had to talk to him. Being a fellow dog trainer I had heard of him and what you will hear is our very first conversation. It was fascinating to hear his story from having his own store, a bad car accident, being the "Rotty Guy", and now presenting during his "Training Between The Ears" (TBTE) workshops. Would love to know what you think - hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you thought @vermontdogtrainer
It was such a joy to talk to Elizabeth. We share common ground as we both started our businesses out of our homes. You will be shocked to hear how she got into the dog business, but then the conversation takes a turn into a subject that we yet to talk about on the show - MANAGAMENT, and not the boss/employee kind. We are talking about how to live with an aggressive dog that you can't trust. There is so much good information in this episode, I hope you enjoy it. Would love to hear your feedback on our Facebook Page: Vermont Dog Trainer Podcast.

It was so nice to catch up with Colleen again after meeting her 3 1/2 years ago at the Training Cesar's Way Workshop in Florida. She has a great story of how humbling it was to meet Cesar for the first time. Now she has a new facility and a new baby to juggle her already successful career of being Cesar's Head Trainer. If you are a fan of the breed game at the end of my podcasts you will get a kick out of this one because it's 100% against her philosophy of assigning a personality trait to a breed. Enjoy!
Hunting season in Vermont starts on Saturday and it's time to talk about how to keep you and your dog safe! This was taped last year but it has all the right content if you are looking for some ways to be safe, noticeable, and still be able to fulfill your dog!
This is the first episode of my podcast that reached out of the country! Karen Laws is located in Ontario, Canada and has extensive experience in the world of Field Trials as well as Nutrition. There is so much good content here for everyone from how trainers work with clients to dog daycare settings to Karen's extensive knowledge of Nutrition. After my conversation with Larry Krohn the 80/20 rule has really taken off! I even used it for my class I taught the night we taped the episode. This is my spin on what I learned from Larry and some ideas on how you can integrate it into your home!

If you've seen Larry on his YouTube Channel you already know he is an excellent dog trainer. But you may not know that he is also a Federal Agent! I think it's fair to say Larry didn't intend on being a dog trainer, or to have nearly 12,000 subscribers on YouTube. Larry is a no-nonsense kinda guy and after you watch his videos you can see why he gets the results that he does. Larry and I have never spoken prior to this interview which makes this conversation as organic as it gets. Enjoy!
I really hope you guys enjoy this episode. This concept of the 3 I's came to fruition this summer and from 10 years of experience watching and observing dogs. Every action a dog has is instinctual, but then there must be an intention along with that. And of course there is an intensity to everything dogs (and humans) do. Would love to get your feedback on this one.

All I can say is WOW! Talking with Barbara gave me some insight into what training was like in the 60's, 70's, all the way to now. She is truly one of our living legends of dog trainers and she has so much knowledge to share. Whether you are a dog trainer or dog owner you will learn something. I just may have to talk with her again sometime. ;-)

Always love talking about Nutrition and dogs. It's one of those subjects we cover with all of our clients. If your dog is on a bad dog food chances are they won't feel well. Imagine having a Big Mac for every meal! The right nutrition can influence your dog's behavior and at the end of the day we all want well behaved dogs!

Loved catching up with Art, I first met him at TCW in Jan of 2014 and have been following him on Social Media ever since. He's got a great thing going with his business DogFit Dallas. You wouldn't know he's only been training for 5 years, he certainly has packed a lot into those years. Art is very open from the one of the lowest times in his life to starting a new project in Dallas that will help at-risk teenagers and stray dogs all at once. Art is a genuine, soft-spoken guy. You can tell why he is so good with dogs.

LOVED having Steve on the show. He owns Pack Leader Dog Psychology and Behavior in New Jersey and he is 1 of 6 trainers that are certified to work for Cesar Millan. After the interview I didn't realize how many things we have in common from both being baseball players (confession I wasn't as good as him) to how we used to watch early episodes of Cesar working with dogs. Such a great conversation with Steve - hope you enjoy it!

This is a subject rarely talked about but I think it's important to cover. Ever see a picture of a family and a dog they just adopted? The dog is being hugged from every member of the family and he/she looks uncomfortable? This is safety issue that members of the family should listen to. Dogs don't hug each other....they aren't human!

Remember what you learned from your parents and friends about dog training? Well forget about it! Gary Cassera's form of training is far removed from your traditional way of dog training and thinking. From my Facebook Live Stream last week. I have never been a fan of this statement....how do you fake something inside when working with a dog hoping you are going to get the same reaction that a trainer might get? Dog owners should focus on being as relaxed as possible while working with their dog - let their instincts take over and get in sync with their dogs!

This was SO much fun! I decided to do a Live Stream on Facebook which I had never done and the comments went through the roof with over 120 comments. Plus we got up to 30 people watching Live. Give this one a watch/listen and let me know what you think.
I love talking about this subject. As you know I'm a big believer in treating a dog like a dog and not a human. I feel that too often we treat our animals like little kids and it can cause behavioral problems. Timeouts don't exist in the animal world, but structure exists in the human world. I don't think many people are aware of this syndrome that can be a major problem in the world of rescue. Black dogs are some of the hardest dogs to get adopted because of a few different reasons. It was great to catch up with Chelsea again. She worked for me for about a year and then moved to Connecticut. She has since started her own training business and has started to create a name for herself. I couldn't be more proud of her and what she has accomplished on her own.

The remote collar causes more controversy than any other tool in the dog training world. It's most commonly referred to as a "shock" collar which is one of the worst terms to use as there is no electrical shock that comes from the collar. When used incorrectly this tool can shut down a dog. Used correctly it can be one of the best tools for recall there is.

Squeaker toys are always a fun debate to have because they can be both fun and detrimental to some dogs. This concept came about during one of our Live streams a few weeks back and it got me thinking. I think it's fair to say everyone knows a dog that seems to be able to run all day without taking a break. Their physical stamina is through the roof but what if I told you that it's possible to wear that dog out in 30 minutes with just a leash and some mental stimulation. Listen to Serena Russell and myself discuss the differences between the two and also answer questions from our Facebook Live stream.

I LOVED talking with Nes, after talking with him I learned that we started off our careers observing dogs in a daycare setting and we both have the same amount of years experience. Take a few minutes and listen to what his advice is to everyday dog owners, what he would be doing if he wasn't working with dogs, and what animal influenced & protected him at 8 years old.

The more I learn the more I teach. I attended the International Association of Canine Professionals Conference last fall in California. Workshops like this help me learn from trainers that have been in the business for 20+ years. Learning from their successes and failures helps shape my generation of dog trainers both personally and professionally.

This is one of the toughest conversations with some of my clients. There are some dogs that need management plain and simple. What is management? It's keep track of your dog 24/7 because you are worried about his/her behavior. Dogs and dog training isn't always rainbows and butterflies, sometimes it's a tough way to live.

I remember when I first learned about dogs and adrenaline, it was a game changer. There is excitement and then there is adrenaline. We come across many dogs that are adrenalized and some dogs even know how to release the adrenaline in their own bodies and can become adrenaline junkies. Learn how to recognize it, handle it, and how to avoid it.

I LOVE TALKING ABOUT THIS! There is a huge difference between mental stimulation and physical stimulation. Dogs use their brain much differently than we do. Simple leash work can exhaust a dog in less than 30 minutes. This is a can't miss episode, change how you work with your dog and and get the behaviors you desire!

I don't know if the casual dog owner knows how much our routines effect our dogs. Sometimes changing a daily routine can help your dog think differently and get them out of the "auto-pilot" mode. And what does that "sad look" during training really mean?
