David became an entrepreneur at 30 and hasn’t looked back. He loves helping people serve their communities, yoga, and all things baseball. And, in his own words, he “rolls through life in a wheelchair.”

At the ripe old age of 18, David discovered both his passion AND opportunities in the non-profit sector and began working diligently to learn and grow. As his experience and expertise grew with his passion, he eventually found himself heading to school to get the education and degrees that would help him level up his impact and continue to grow in his ability to better serve the businesses and communities that needed his guidance.

David's commitment to service and his immense expertise in non-profits and NGOs is second to none. This was a GREAT conversation, and I'm already looking forward to our next one. :)

Ken Jensen is an author, life coach, Marine Gulf War vet, former addict & alcoholic, and former bipolar sufferer. He’s even been dead a few times and survived 2 comas! In 2004 he turned all that around, including addressing his bipolar disorder without meds! Now he helps other trauma survivors create small businesses to share their stories.

It only took Ken and me a handful of seconds before we knew we'd be fast friends. By the time our chat was over, we wished we were neighbors. :) Ken is a natural and gifted storyteller and has worked hard on becoming an even better listener and guide - which is at the heart of his coaching practice. In our conversation today, we touch briefly on his journey to realizing that coaching would be an excellent way for him to share his life and his gifts with others in an impactful way.

We also explore the importance of getting literal "buy-in" from your clients, the ways in which calmness and quiet have emerged from the wildness of Ken's early life, and how simple (AND HARD) the real work of coaching is.

Brent has led in the number one or number two role in multiple businesses and nonprofits on the local, national, and international levels. As a consultant and coach, he walked with hundreds of CEOs and teams all over North America. Today, Brent is the Head Coach at the executive and team coaching firm, Vibrancy Unlocked.

Getting to share some time with Brent was a true joy. Not only do we share a certain kind of lightheartedness (also known as "goofiness"), but his commitment and clarity in how and why he helps leaders and their teams are inspiring.

In fact, I think Brent expresses his mission quite beautifully in his LinkedIn About section (of all places!), so I'll just quote him here:

"I know the joy and the stress, the excitement and the loneliness, the blessing and the curse of leading organizations. I have witnessed it, and I have lived it.

"The work world can too easily strip away our humanity with expectations that prevent you from being you. Given the chance, it will challenge your values, divide your family, and leave you beat up. There are few things I love more than supporting a leader and their team as they press on into the next season.

"And it is my joy to walk with you toward greater vibrancy. To listen. To Question. To Strategize. To Encourage. To Celebrate. Bring on the real and the raw. Let’s get to work."

Doug's story is a powerful one...yet is somehow dwarfed by the power of his methodology, which is all about how humans really connect to one another and why de-escalation is a foundational skill for all of our relationships.

Doug was born nearly deaf, almost blind, and crippled with two club feet. His life began as a struggle, and he learned that emotions were unsafe - no crying, no anger, no frustration. He was afraid to feel connection and happiness because I was afraid it would disappear. His emotions were numb, and feelings of loneliness were everpresent.

Sound familiar? Maybe like someone you know? Maybe a little like yourself?

Today, Doug teaches cognitive empathy, emotional competency, and de-escalation skills based on how our brains are hard-wired, and in today's startlingly profound episode, we talk all about that.

We also explore what prompted Doug to leave a successful career as a trial lawyer to become a peacemaker.

David’s success in business has been attributed to his ability to lead people toward the achievement of a common goal. We begin our conversation by discussing a key moment in Lauri's life where an absolutely stellar piece of feedback set her on the path to becoming the coach she is today (seriously, it's one of the most perfectly-expressed bits of feedback I've ever heard anyone receive...I got sort of contact-high epiphany from it just by talking about it!)

We go on to talk about many key coaching ideas - intuition, alignment, intention, attention, awareness, and more - and explore how they manifest themselves in her coaching practice.

Really, we cover SO much territory in this rather flowing and intuitive conversation! In fact, we went so long during and after our recording that we both had to rush to our next appointment.

Lauri is an intuitive public speaking and leadership coach. She helps those who are on a soul-driven mission to stand in their power, speak their truth and Lead so they can do their part to change the world with authenticity, creativity, and courage.

She believes that everyone is born with Charisma - all 7.8 billion of us, and counting - then the world teaches us to cover it up. She knows how we can unleash our Presence by being our full selves - quirks included - and how to coach/coax that fullness out of us and into the world.

Right before we hit the Record button, Tim expressed how he thinks that bios and intros that simply list accomplishments can be more of an obstacle in getting to know someone, rather than a useful place to start. In classic "yes, and" fashion, we start our conversation by exploring that a bit!

We go on to talk about all sorts of core coaching concepts, like the importance of getting on people's level (a.k.a. - meeting them where they're at), why even the best-laid plans always require adjustments once they hit reality, and why a mama giraffe persistently knocks over their newborn calves when they're freshly out of the womb.

In our first episode, Gail and I dove into some key distinctions between coaching and consulting and the ways that “motivation” can be so much different than “inspiration” – especially when it comes to taking action.

We also discussed her Generational Awareness Program (GAP) and how, using the DISC assessment as a foundation, she explores the different ways that certain traits and characteristics manifest across the generations.

In this episode, I was inspired to begin our conversation with a prompt from one of Gail's recent posts on LinkedIn. It boils down to an old Ben Franklin quote: "Never ruin an apology with an excuse." From there, we explore the golden opportunities for growth that both giving and receiving an apology provide, how to avoid negating an apology with a "but", and we play with the analogy of an "apology sandwich" to describe how best to think about a healthy structure for an apology. (Gail remembers to "add the cheese"...you'll have to listen to find out what that means...)

As you may remember, Gail has spent years as an executive, maneuvering the power dynamics that happen in all interpersonal and business interactions. As the USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of Power Up Power Down, she’s the go-to expert on harnessing interpersonal power and creating win/win outcomes.

It was an absolute delight to continue my conversation with Jaime today! We immediately jumped into big-picture stuff - like how coaches help you to shine light into dark scary places and guide your exploration of your reflexes and reactions in ways that lead you into making strong choices about how YOU want to move forward.

One thing I love about our convo in particular is how we are able to move freely from the "30,000-foot-view" into the "feet-on-the-ground" techniques and tactics that define good coaching. You don't have to choose between one or the other...it's Both/And!

We also talk about Jaime's new Phoenix coaching program (check out the link below to learn more) and her freshly-launched LinkedIn interview series "Shining Bright", showcasing the perspectives of women leaders on subjects like the Myth of the SuperMom and Diversity & Allyship.

To refresh your memory a little, Jamie is a Life and Leadership Coach who partners with people who have been going so long they have lost themselves. Working with Jamie, her clients own their power while doing the uncomfortable things they have dreamed of doing.

Jamie spent 17 years in technology – with most of it in a state of denial, overwhelm, and exhaustion. She knew it wasn’t what she wanted in life, but was in denial of what she wanted to do. She loved the idea of building things for people. The engineer in her wanted to make people’s lives better by building great products. However, something was always missing.

Our last conversation covered some of the steps on Jamie’s journey to the thriving coaching practice she has today. We also touched on a few fantastic aspects of coaching and servant leadership – intentionality, the various natures of competition, some misplaced notions of professionalism, and so much more.

Christine is even more inspiring and dedicated than I remembered! It was a pleasure to welcome her back onto the podcast.

In today's episode, we discussed how she didn't wait until January to get started and took advantage of that "December gap" to really jumpstart not one but TWO new coaching initiatives. This leads us naturally into a conversation about how much more energy it takes to move from 0 to 1 than it takes to keep the momentum going (it's a law of physics AND a law of human achievement).

We also touch on the importance of knowing what your "non-negotiable" is, and how that shines a powerful light on the gaps you need to bridge and the steps on your success journey.

Christine is a multiple business owner and business success coach who has worked for startups as well as some of the biggest companies on the planet. She is a catalyst who has generated millions of dollars in revenue annually across multiple industries, and who can help you figure out the HOW while supporting you in building a thriving business and your dream life.

It was frankly inspiring to have Michael King back on the podcast! The work he's done and the growth he's experienced in just the short time between now and our first episode together is truly amazing.

In today's episode, we pick up our conversation by talking about the massive momentum that 2023 has begun with, and the ways that leaders and teams are navigating our present moment of crisis and opportunity. Michael also makes an excellent distinction between reacting vs. adapting, and talks about how a good coach is well-positioned to provide the perspective and insight that will guide organizations over challenging gaps.

Michael also goes into his "90 Day 6 Figure Blueprint" program through his Aspire Leadership Group and shares some of the success stories that have already emerged from this exciting new endeavor.

Michael is the founder and CEO of TEAMS.COACH, LLC and a highly sought-after executive and business leadership coach. He helps business leaders clarify and execute at high levels through his proprietary T.E.A.M.S. Methodology to develop measurable business growth and company-wide collaboration.

Working with everyone from senior leaders all the way through to full-team engagement, he discovers gaps in performance, disconnects in company culture, and potentially dangerous blind spots - establishing new goals and the plans to achieve them, as well as evaluating overall engagement and ultimately helping leaders (and their teams) to get unstuck.

Michael is also the host of The Level Up Leader podcast, where he interviews some of the best coaches and leaders in business about everything from professional development and personal growth to what it takes to truly level up your leadership.

In our last chat, we talked about Stephanie’s early experiences as she was becoming a coach, how athletes transition to the next phase of life after their competitive sports days are over, and the passion she has in her service as a guide for people looking for that next piece of their life’s puzzle. In today's Part Two, we pick up right where we left off! Stephanie shares some of the details of her end-of-year rituals, like a "part-year" review and how she uses a structure called The Wheel of Life to set her priorities up properly for the year to come. We spend most of our time talking about building habits and making choices, and how much more power and space that gives you in so many areas of your life. Stephanie is a blast to talk with - we spent almost 20 minutes before recording just chatting about family and the weather! She's also an excellent coach and really knows how to share herself in such a way that helps others to better see how they can become more of who they want to be. Stephanie holds a degree in applied neuroscience coaching and a master’s degree in cultural business management and has been a Potential Catalyst for more than a decade. She has supported many individuals and businesses in achieving their goals. Her goal is that every person can bring the best of herself to the role that suits her.

Jeff has over 30 years as a serial entrepreneur and is the Founder and CEO of Pull The Chute. He has started several of his own companies, consulted many others, and is currently using his experience and talents as a Business, Executive, and Leadership Coach. He believes in people and the power of those people to help a business grow. If you grow your people, you will grow your company. I think that Jeff sums up the core principle of PTC perfectly himself, so I'll let him lay it out: "There are a couple of important birthdays in our life. When we turn 16 because we can drive when we turn 21 because are legal. When we turn 40 because statistically, our life is half over. That's when I decided to go skydiving for the first time. You go 14,000 feet up in the sky and jump out of the plane. You are falling at 120 mph. It's hard to breathe, one movement of your hand starts you spinning, and everything is happening so fast you can't see where you're at or where you're going. "But at 5,500 feet, you pull the chute, and suddenly you can breathe again, you are in control, you can see where you're at and where you want to go. "So when I turned 60, I looked in the mirror and said, I don't want to retire. I like working. So what can I do that will help leave this world a little better than when I came into it? That is when I was reminded of what it felt like to pull the chute and decided that businesses need to Pull the Chute for at least an hour a week. So they can take a breath, feel in control, and see where they are and where they want to go."

It was such a delight to renew my conversation with Beth Miller! In today's episode, we talk about "adaptive communication" and always endeavoring to use the "right tool for the right job" when it comes to how we connect and work together. We also explore multiple facets of the familiar topic of questions, and how responding to a question with a question (which we're often told to avoid) can be an expression of curiosity and a desire for clarity. We also dive deep into some of the key values of good leadership like problem-solving and delegation, especially in young leadership. We get into quite a bit more than that, as Beth and I went from zero-to-60 in no time flat - it was so easy to move into the deep end of the pool in our too-short second conversation. A third episode is all but guaranteed. :) Beth is an experienced corporate executive, business owner, and entrepreneur with a love for developing talent and seeing other leaders succeed. As a chair for Vistage, a leading CEO peer group, she realized her love of impacting businesses and founded Executive Velocity, which is dedicated to helping leaders reach their full potential. When she’s not sharing her experience with other entrepreneurs, Beth is an explorer and world traveler who’s set foot on all seven continents. She has a love of animals and wildlife, which often takes her to Africa and other habitats with majestic animals. Beth lives in Atlanta with her 2 cats, Puri and Mr. Bates, lovingly named after the Downton Abbey character.

[Host's note - I got to meet Mr. Bates before we began recording as he settled on Beth's lap, and I'm considering inviting this sweet snuggly gentleman onto my new podcast, Conversations with Cats.]

In our renewed conversation, Marshall and I share our bewilderment at how fast 2023 is progressing - busy and full, but not frantic...which is really the sweet spot. We go on to discuss the vital importance of self-care in making sure you're able to show up for the people you serve, why it's crucial to have a proper understanding of what "balance" really means when it comes to work & life, and the exciting new group program that Marshall has coming up in April! To refresh your memory on who Marshall is, he's first and foremost a dedicated husband and father. He values family above all else and places the utmost importance on striking a work/life balance for himself and those he mentors. Over the past 35 years, Marshall has built multiple small businesses and learned first-hand the challenges that most small business owners face. He understands the ups and downs of business ownership and combines this intimate knowledge with his approachable coaching philosophy to develop achievable solutions for those he teaches. He truly believes that we all have greatness within us and the ability to create the life we want on our terms. As a seasoned business owner, Marshall has seen many businesses that grew and succeeded and others that failed miserably. Over the years he became a student of business and leadership – looking at what it takes for someone to succeed in their own business. Today, as a business, leadership, and life coach, he is committed to helping others discover their greatness, his success coming from seeing others become the leaders of their businesses and life.

When I reached out to Althea to come back on the podcast, I asked her if there was any topic in particular that she felt called to speak on. She responded with, "The value of sales". I knew that would be a fruitful conversation, but it was even better and more expansive than I'd imagined! In today's episode, we explore how "sales" is often considered a dirty word by some, but really it's about finding the right ways to serve your ideal prospects. We touch on the importance of both quality AND qualifying questions in determining whether or not the "fit" is right for everyone, as well as the value of intention and attention in showing up for the people you seek to serve. We cover a LOT more ground as our conversation evolves, but you'll just have to listen to get the rest! ;) Althea is the owner of a Christ-Centered Leadership Development Firm that grows your profitable Spirit-Led business with a tailored strategy, expert coaching, and God’s blueprint.

Brian and Kevin have another fascinating conversation today, this time on the nature of listening. Beginning with Oscar Trimboli's work on How To Listen, the discussion moves through the various levels of listening, and the role that silence plays in our understanding. They also talk about the ins and outs of modern communication and the distinctions between physical presence and "digital" presence. Toward the end of the episode, Brian even runs Kevin through a coaching exercise that explores how he listens to himself, and what that means in how he communicates and connects. It gets a little profound! To reacquaint you with Brian, he's been in and around the development/coaching fields for 5+ decades with no signs of stopping. He’s lived all around the country and coaches all types of people at any stage in their personal and professional development – high schoolers to retirees and everyone in between. He’s an ICF-certified coach whose clients are seeking transformational change in their personal and/or professional lives. Using a model based on Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, he applies his decades of work in change management and knowledge of neuroscience to guide his clients into their desired future.

Christine Meyer is an executive life coach and author of "Keep It Simple, Smartypants! Stop Overthinking. Start Aligning. Live Happy.”

Since 2002, it's been her mission to empower, educate and uplift. She coaches the ultra-successful people (who you'd think wouldn't need a coach) to dream even bigger, reach beyond their limitations, and know themselves from the inside out, which allows them to move through life confidently and happily while making the impact they want to make.

Her clients include Obama speech writers, impact-driven serial entrepreneurs, Emmy Award winners, best-selling authors, multi-million dollar investors, founders of profit and non-profit companies, popular radio personalities, and leaders of change.

She's also a founding member and regular contributor to the Forbes Coaches Council. The second book in her Keep it Simple, Smartypants series is launching in 2024.

Our starting place today was a simple one, talking about the analogy of your thoughts as reservations into your future. From there, we explore the nature of intention, getting stuck in a rut (and how a coach is ideally positioned to help get you out), and emotions as signals.

We even run through one of Christine's coaching exercises together - that's right, you get to hear some LIVE coaching! And maybe get to know your humble host a little bit better, too.

This is among my very favorite episodes so far, and I'll be making Christine a regular returning guest if I have anything to say about it. ;)

One thing I love about talking with coaches is how readily our conversations can move between a 30,000-foot view and an in-the-trenches kind of practicality and practice. Chuck clearly excels at this, as you can hear in our episode today.

We touch on a plethora of topics in our time together, primarily focusing on ideas like the importance of putting your company values into practice (with a behavioral structure for support), the need for more dynamic leadership development as the nature of teams and company culture evolves, and how new technology has created (and will continue to create) exciting and scary opportunities for capital-C Change in how we work and live.

Chuck Mollor is the founder, CEO, advisor, and executive coach at MCG Partners. He is also the best-selling author of “The Rise of The Agile Leader”

It was both an honor and a delight to welcome one of my first and best guests back onto the pod. In today's episode, Tom talks about his recent experiences with taking time away and how intention plays a critical role in making that possible. We also discuss how businesses and podcasts grow and evolve over the years, and how his own relationship with the ICF has also progressed since he began his work as a coach. Beyond that, we explore the fascinating tension between what coaching IS...and what it ISN'T, and how that plays out in the coaching industry. And for the cherry on top, Tom also shares the executive coaching community he leads through the LA chapter of the ICF, with links below to find out more. Tom has been coaching senior corporate leaders for more than 30 years, helping to soften disruptive executives and amplify the look and sound of leadership…which also happens to be the name of his podcast, now in its 15th year. He’s a Senior Executive Coach on the rosters of many coaching consortiums nationwide, being an active member of the International Coach Federation (ICF) and the Association of Talent Development (ATD) which, in 2010, awarded him with their Lifetime Award for continuing contributions to the fields of training and development.

Rich is back, and he's about to be a published author! In our episode today, we discuss how he found the opportunity to contribute a chapter to an exciting new book on human development (you might call it the pod-to-book pipeline). We explore the idea of a "personal success structure", and how beginning with the personal is crucial to building a firm foundation for all of your future endeavors. With that as a launching point, we cover a lot more ground in our conversation - you'll just have to listen to the whole episode to find out where we go. ;) Also, in addition to more information on the book itself, you can find out more about the official release date and a couple of Rich's upcoming speaking engagements from his LinkedIn profile (link down below). Rich helps entrepreneurial-minded business owners that are not experiencing the growth, income or time freedom they expected to discover and develop the fundamentals that will enable them to build the business they originally envisioned. His passion is to help business owners get back on track and in alignment with the energy and passion of their vision. Entrepreneurs wear many hats to start up their businesses. As a business grows the juggling of those roles can cause the owner to "live to work" instead of the business providing the better quality of life they desired. As a result, business owners lose the passion, inspiration, and momentum to grow toward their aspirations. This is where Rich's experience and expertise are most beneficial and impactful.

It was absolutely lovely to have Andrea back on the pod for another conversation! As a long-time coach and teacher, she has a fantastic perspective on how coaching has evolved over the past few decades. In today's episode, we start out by discussing how the technology of coaching has changed, especially in the context of cameras. This leads us into the importance of not over-relying on tools like video in your coaching relationships - seeing more doesn't always mean seeing better or more clearly. We go on to explore how Andrea once played something of a "Success Detective" for herself - tracing her network of clients and referrals back through the years and discovering that FIVE people we're primarily responsible for her entire coaching practice...and how what those five people had in common guided her attention and efforts in her business going forward. We eventually close by reflecting on how coaching becomes more and more a part of your identity as you go along, and how we both tend to prefer "coach-like" people in our personal and professional lives. Andrea opened her coaching business, SageCoach, in 1997. She has logged over 10,000 coaching hours, working with executives, leaders, and entrepreneurs. She also teaches for CTI. More importantly, she has a well-balanced life, lives in the high desert, and loves to hike. She has visited all 63 of the US National Parks and remains an adventurer.

Paul Glover, Part Three! It was so good to have one of my favorite people back on the pod. One of my first three-timers, Paul shares his new framework built around the idea of having a fool in your life. But what does that mean, exactly? Drawing on the original medieval example of the "King's Fool" or the "Court Jester", the fool is one who can speak the truth to the king from a different (possibly insane) perspective...WITHOUT getting killed for it. How does that translate today? A fool can be a powerful tool in your life - someone with the wisdom and perspective to see what you cannot (we all have blindspots), AND who is given the "psychological safety" to speak that truth to you without fear of reaction or reprisal. There's much more to it than that, and we get deep into all of the nuances and facets during our conversation. But at the heart of it, the fool is a dead-simple concept that is nevertheless quite challenging and sometimes painful...but so so so worthwhile. Paul is a C-Suite performance coach with 20 years of experience as a federal court trial lawyer. He’s a passionate storyteller who believes in the power of narrative to influence and educate in the business world, personal life, and even courtrooms. He is also a member of the Forbes Coaches Council and the Author of “WorkQuake”.

Stan Peake is back for a new conversation! Btw, Stan has narrowed the title of his new book down to two contenders. And while the book won't be out until closer to Summer 2023, that title will be official VERY soon. In today's conversation, we use Glodean's just-released TEDx Talk as our jumping-off point. But instead of discussing the talk itself (which really does speak for itself and you should go watch it right now - Glodean NAILED it), we spend most of our time talking about everything around a talk like this - like the way she's embraced speaking as the most powerful expression of the way she wants to serve her community and the world.

We also dive into subjects like community building and group coaching, as well as the different forms that feedback can take (think post-presentation conversations, view counts on videos, and how challenging it can be to gauge the impact you're having.

We cover a LOT more ground in this wide-ranging chat, so either before or after you've watched her TEDx Talk, make sure to give this a listen. :)

As the Great Resignation continues, one industry that is getting hit the hardest is Accounting. Many experienced bookkeepers and CPAs are retiring, and as Alicia points out in our conversation, Accounting isn't exactly the "sexiest" field for Millenials and Zoomers to pursue.

In today's episode, Alicia shares all of the ways that Royalwise is filling that gap through both short and long-form educational videos, full courses, one-on-one advising and coaching, and so much more.

Whether you're a burgeoning professional looking to turn a "gig" into a new career, an entrepreneur desperately in need of financial guidance, or a business owner hunting for a cost-effective way to get high-quality accounting and bookkeeping work, Royalwise has something for you.

In our last episode, Stephen Webster and I "gripped it and ripped it". This time, we really "hit the sweet spot". But enough tortured sports analogies...

In our continued conversation today, Stephen and I begin by discussing all the new powerful AI tools that have been all the rage since late 2022. In particular, the ability of AI to serve as your "smart new hire" as you work to both generate new ideas and great expressions of your business. From there, we talk about the importance of exploring with curiosity while also carefully managing your attention, how setting boundaries can serve to actually bring people closer to you, and the necessity of grounding all of this in "value".

As you might remember, Stephen helps growth-minded business leaders ignite next-level growth through performance coaching, business systems, and technology. He is the CEO of Wellfleet Enterprises, a graduate of the Zero to Dangerous peak performance training program, as well as a mentor and advisor to individuals and organizations.

He works with clients to find their purpose and develop a holistic model of success for their lives – career, personal relationships, health & finances.

Known internationally for pioneering engagement leadership work, Nadine advises business and non-profit executives, heads of state, and all kinds of other organizations. She’s CEO of beCause Global Consulting, named Best Stakeholder Engagement Firm, and was the first female Executive-in-Residence at IMD Business School with a focus on responsible leadership.

Among her many accolades, she’s received the Catalyst for Change award; been shortlisted for the Responsible CEO of the Year, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award presented at Säid Business School Oxford University.

From TEDx to Forbes, Nadine speaks about engaging with others who have different perspectives and the value of connections.

Listing all of her accomplishments and honors and awards here would take us all day, and that’s saying nothing of all her ongoing work across the globe.

Most importantly for today, Nadine’s in the midst of writing her new book, “The Power of Connectedness” (with a foreword by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu), which is at the heart of everything she does.

(In fact, that was nearly the title for this episode...but Nadine inspired an even better one. ;)

We begin our conversation with a story about Nadine and her grandmother, and how an early lesson in giving and serving led Nadine into becoming the coach she is today.

“I didn’t recognize at first that my coaching style is kind of like what a loving grandmother would do: open space for exploration without pressure. I’ve been told by those I’ve coached that I create a safe space and ask gentle but probative questions that enable them to unearth primal issues underneath whatever specific concern they’ve asked me to help them resolve.”

We go on to explore several deep and powerful ideas around human connection, with Nadine drawing from her decades of experience coaching just about every kind of person you can imagine. We touch on things like open questions, building trust, creating and holding space, how respect fuels patience, not "stealing the revelation", and so much more.

She closes our conversation with this: “Knowing who you are and learning how to not lie to yourself - whether ‘you’ is a person, a family or a business - is the ability to recognize denial or avoidance when it’s in play and put an end to it by owning up to what’s real. As a grandmother, I feel this is the best legacy I can share.“

Seriously, this is among the deepest and most value-packed 30 minutes we've had the opportunity to record. Nadine is a treasure, and experiencing even this tiny piece of her work here will enrich your life.

I can't tell you how excited I was to have Clovette back on the podcast, and she exceeded my already-high expectations!

Today, we dive right into the deep end - discussing the idea of emotional capital and the vital role that authenticity and vulnerability play in the modern workplace.

We also explore the need for good guidance during times of transformation (a coach comes to mind ;), holding space and time to let good questions find their ultimate destination (which sometimes is an even better question), and how a real strategy for your personal and professional life is the ultimate fruit that great coaching will bear.

We cover a TON more, as it was easy to slip right into the kind of open and flowing dialogue that we both love. Towards the end of our chat, Clovette also mentions a special offer that she's putting out on LinkedIn. The first 100 people who respond will get to take her up on that offer, so click on over to her LI profile (link below) for more details.

In case you need a refresher, Clovette believes success happens when she finds a better way and shares it with others. She does that by challenging the status quo and thinking differently. After getting fired via voicemail from a software sales job, Clovette made a commitment to help 100K software salespeople secure their future by leveraging their existing IP.

Ultimately, what she brings is a trusting relationship where others can count on her, with a major focus on how she desires to positively influence the communities she chooses to serve. Kene Iloenyosi is back, and just as fantastic as I remembered! Our first episode was among my very favorite chats, and this second one somehow managed to exceed my already-lofty expectations.

In our conversation today, we cover the “ins and outs” of introversion and extroversion (and ambiversion), the importance of “fit” in both your professional life and the coach/client relationship, and the ways that purpose can power your work.

Kene Iloenyosi is an author, career coach, and speaker who guides people to discover their purpose and find their career sweet spot. His books, “Finding Your Sweet Spot”, “DNA of Talent” and “Put Your Purpose to Work”, have helped thousands of people live out their purpose in the work they do.

Before we met to record today's episode, Jason asked for a good starting topic to spark the conversation. My first thought was something I'd just recently read in Atomic Habits, by James Clear. The quote, more or less, is:

"When in doubt, stick to the schedule and reduce the scope."

From there, we were off to the races! As the discussion turned to The Line of Choice and how Jason uses it in his coaching, an idea occurred to me:

"I'd rather fail above the line than succeed below it."

You'll have to listen if you want the full context of our lively chat, but I will say that both of us are still thinking about the implications of whether or not that's a true statement...I guess Jason will have to come back on again to talk about where we landed! :)

Jason is the founder of SLI Coaching and Consulting, serving executive leaders and teams by bringing servant leadership into the workplace. He’s also the Associate Vice Chancellor for Leader and Culture Development in the Texas Tech University System.

He's also an award-winning author and has published several articles around accountability in teams, team effectiveness, and bringing servant leadership to teams.

In Claire’s second appearance on the pod, we begin by discussing how she works with her clients on understanding their values and using that understanding as a means to better navigate their work and their life more authentically…and therefore more effectively.

Claire goes on to speak eloquently on her core values, the foundation of her own life as well as her coaching practice. As the conversation evolves, we explore a new value that she’ll be adding to her list - Valuing Your Values. This naturally brings forward the crucial importance of continuing to question your values as you change and grow, so that you can stay in alignment with both your own work/life and the work/life of those around you.

Of course, the metaphors abounded.

We compared this to using the tools of an old-time navigator (compass, sextant, map, the stars) to maintain and adjust your course during life’s long journey. We also considered the optometrist, changing and adjusting lenses for you until your vision “snaps into place” and suddenly what was once opaque and obtuse becomes joyfully obvious.

It was a rather fun conversation, as you can tell. :)

To remind you of who Claire is, she is a Leadership & High-Performance Coach, coaching Executive and C-Suite leaders and their teams to achieve peak performance.

With a track record as an Executive Director & 25 years of experience coaching C-Suite leaders and their teams, she is also is author of the Amazon best-seller Super Neuro You, published in April 2021.

Lori is just as sharp and insightful as I remembered from our first chat, and we had another excellent talk in today's episode. We focused a great deal on the lessons and skills we've all learned through the pandemic, and how important it is to use our newfound insights to shine a light on all the reasons why certain ways of working are still massively important. The connection and creativity of in-person work, the camaraderie that comes from sharing space together, and making sure that we don't "throw the baby out with the bathwater" as we negotiate the different strengths and weaknesses of remote and in-person work. I almost let Lori go after that conversation...but then I thought of another question I wanted to hear her take on. And she sure didn't disappoint! Lori and I went on to discuss the power of "structured communication", and how our systems for working together as teams (meetings, standups, agendas, tasking out, recording results, reviews, etc.) allow for everyone to bring their best work to the table, and keep your business "running on rails". In case you don't remember Lori from her last episode, she's an expert in professional empowerment; she motivates teams to maximize their capacity for excellence. She inspires by supporting clients in the discovery of their true potential. Lori enjoys meeting new people and is fascinated by their uniqueness. She’s open-minded and passionate about helping individuals to identify and enhance their strengths.

Lynne Jacob is back! She was gracious enough to take some time to chat with me from Aculpulco - which is a great place to spend a January if you ask me. :)

In fact, that was at the heart of our discussion today! We talked about how she's been running her thriving coaching business for decades now, mainly without an office of any kind (except for a brief period, which didn't last). Long before the age of Zoom calls and video conferencing, Lynne was developing the systems and techniques to run and grow her business from anywhere she wanted.

She was ahead of the curve then, and she still is now.

Lynne shares some of her experiences and lessons from operating her business from around the globe. She's also an excellent storyteller, which you'll catch some of in this all-too-brief conversation.

Aside from our two Conversations, here's a little bit more about Lynne:

Now now, before I let your mind wander on the meaning of this episode title, let me say that this is 100% based on juggling. ;)If you’ve ever tried to learn how to juggle, you’ve probably found yourself tossing things into the air and lunging around trying to catch them. If you were to hire a juggling coach, they’d probably tell you very early on that the key to learning how to juggle is to focus on the throw, and not the catch. So, what are you trying to accomplish right now that has you lunging and lurching around? And might it be a matter of focusing your efforts are the wrong part of the process?

In this recurring series, Kevin explores some of the brightest ideas and insightful lessons that his guests have shared with him on the podcast, and why they’ve continued to inspire him ever since. This is really just a different way of saying something that I think every coach knows. Coaches are experts at asking the right questions and guiding their clients to the right answers. Any teacher worth their salt also knows this in their bones. There’s nothing quite like that moment of discovery to really cement a new revelation in someone’s mind.It can be challenging to remain patient in waiting for that moment to come, but it is key if your coaching is going to truly deliver on its promise.

This is a fantastic flip of a quote I’ve seen quite a bit in recent years. You always see this as, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” It’s meant to guide you toward taking action on what matters most to you.Oddly enough, I think the opposite question has perhaps an even greater influence in that direction…what would you do if you knew that you WOULD fail? What is worth doing regardless of the outcome?

He is a published author on the subject of The Digital Transformation of Communication, with works including “The Human Communication Playbook” and “The Mobile Youth: Voices of the Connected Generation”

In this episode, Graham talks about how he's always been a storyteller, and how that passion has led him to help so many others find their own storyteller within. We also discuss the critical importance of vulnerability in today's world, and why it's less important to "know your why" than it is to simply begin.

A balance that many people wrestle with professionally is how to present themselves as an authority in their field while also maintaining the vulnerability that allows them to show up authentically as themselves in all of their work. I think part of this might stem from an old mis-defining of what the very concepts of authority and vulnerability mean.

In this recurring series, Kevin explores some of the brightest ideas and insightful lessons that his guests have shared with him on the podcast, and why they’ve continued to inspire him ever since. I’ve often found a great deal of inspiration from the process of stand-up comedy. Most of us only think of or see the big shows, the spotlight performances. What we DON’T see is all the work that goes on before that. All the rewrites and the bombs and the jokes that don’t connect.

I think there’s a lot for a coach, and really any entrepreneur, to learn from what I like to think of sometimes as the “science of standup”.

One of a coach’s most important jobs is a simple one - ask questions. Those questions can be simple or complex (usually simple), but they often must be insistent. Questions like this can feel challenging to the ones being asked. There’s a feeling of being “judged” at times. This is where the skills of an excellent coach can truly shine. How do you apply just the right pressure with your questions without tipping someone over into feeling judged?

One thing that uniquely positions a coach to be of great service to their clients is an unexpected combination of characteristics that make them what I sometimes call The Familiar Stranger.

Though close relationships - friends and family - may know you incredibly well, it is often difficult to open up in the ways you need most to someone so near and dear to you.

What a coach can provide is the empathy and connection of a loved one with the distance and safety of someone you barely know…not to mention the lack of “baggage” that might come with the history of a longstanding relationship. :)

Most coaches I’ve met have two things very much in common: they discovered in themselves a desire to serve others, and they realized that they had something very specific and unique to contribute.

But there’s something else very similar to this that is often true, especially with the best coaches - they’ve found an area of great need, and have chosen to dedicate themselves to it.

When seeking growth, it’s easy to think purely of addition - what needs to be added, what needs to get bigger, what needs to be more.

But it’s just as often what you remove or refrain from - words left unsaid, roads left untaken - that lead you to your next level.

Always a sucker for a good analogy, I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how good coaching serves two seemingly-paradoxical purposes.

As coaches, entrepreneurs, and leaders know all too well, it’s frightfully easy to spread yourself too thin and hurl yourself towards increasingly impossible standards.

But peak performance is a matter of focus and choice. It’s important to decide which bars need to be kept high, and which ones can be just as useful and powerful at a lower height.

In attempting to provide the guidance that someone needs most, you have to learn at least a little something about what’s currently driving them.

This is actually inspired by a movie called Boiler Room. In it, there’s a speech delivered by - of all people - Ben Affleck that manages to be both a little hilarious and surprisingly insightful (this is with the benefits of hindsight, of course).

He begins by telling his audience of “recruits” all they can expect to gain and all he’s accomplished and acquired himself in the process of doing the job they’re all about to begin. Then, he pivots with this line:

“Now you know what’s possible, let me tell you what’s required.”

This is a little something I first encountered courtesy of The Tim Ferriss Show, which remains an almost must-listen on most episodes, despite their length.

Often, when we frame the value or worth of a task or a job or a responsibility, we set it within the context of how difficult it will be.

And while hard work has never been something I’ve shied away from (I imagine many of you are the same), I’ve come to understand that it’s always worth asking, “What would this look like if it were easy?”

List-making has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember…well, sometime after I first learned to write. ;)

In my professional life, I often end my day or my week by creating a list that represents all the vital tasks and priorities ahead of me. Not only does it help keep me organized, but it also lets me “lay things down” in a healthy way - you know what they say, “All work and no play…”

But a coach I interviewed for the podcast recently tipped me to an ingenious addition to this process…

Rich helps entrepreneurial-minded business owners that are not experiencing the growth, income, or time freedom they expected to discover and develop the 3 fundamentals that will enable them to build the business they originally envisioned.

This is where Rich's experience and expertise are of most benefit and impact.

Jamie Martin is a Life and Leadership Coach who partners with people who have been going so long they have lost themselves. Working with Jamie, her clients own their power while doing the uncomfortable things they have dreamed of doing.

Jamie spent 17 years in technology - with most of it in a state of denial, overwhelm, and exhaustion. She knew it wasn't what she wanted in life, but was in denial of what she wanted to do. A balance that many people wrestle with professionally is how to present themselves as an authority in their field while also maintaining the vulnerability that allows them to show up authentically as themselves in all of their work.

I think part of this might stem from an old mis-defining of what the very concepts of authority and vulnerability mean.

While coaches often bring a great deal of unique insight and uncommon information to their clients, the truth is that most of what you need is already right there with you.

Coaches know this all too well, which is why their most powerful gifts are found in shining a light and helping you focus that light in the right direction.

I think of two words to describe this: Intention, and articulation.

In business and in life, many people define competition through the lens of a zero-sum game - winners, losers, a limited and finite ‘pie’.

They tend to see competitive analysis the same way, as they seek to gain insight and advantage through comparison.

Our team has been reading a book recently called Don’t Make Me Think. Its focus is on “usability” in web and mobile design, but the concepts at play are almost universal.

Coaches know quite a bit about the power of common sense, don’t they? ;)

Here’s one of my favorite bits of the book so far: “If you can make something significantly clearer by making it slightly inconsistent, choose in favor of clarity.”

Clovette believes success happens when she finds a better way and shares it with others.

Clovette's coaching journey goes all the way back to her childhood. Since then, the beautiful blend of drive, hustle, and dedication to serving others has grown her into an incredible coach. Her approach is both holistic and specific, and she's got a dynamic approach to coaching that I think you'll love.

It feels lately like many lines in life that once seemed clear have become blurred in some way. Personal life and professional life, WFH vs. The Office vs. Hybrid Work.

Coaches are keenly aware of this, often in specific ways. Think about the distinctions that are drawn between “coaching” and “consulting” and “therapy” and “mentorship”. But I think that the word “blurred” might not be the right way to describe this.

Try “blended” on for size…let me explain.

Milly is a successful career coach and consultant that has helped many people figure out where they are in their careers and where they should go next. However, the road to being a Career Coach was by no means smooth or easy. It was difficult, to say the least, and was filled with doubts, worries, and stress. But she overcame the odds and faced her challenges on the road to success.

As a coach, Milly exists to help people make the changes they want to see in themselves so that they can ultimately pivot their lives with confidence, power, and poise. Todd is a Christian, husband, dad, athlete, coach, and 30-year veteran of the United States Navy. He’s held positions in corporate HR, been CEO of a start-up, and now co-owns a CrossFit gym and his own coaching business. Todd is an avid reader and loves spending time with his wife, Amy.

He has a real passion for making people and organizations better. His best days are helping others have their best day.

Todd knows that success comes from building and maintaining quality relationships. People want to work with, and do business with, people they like and trust. He believes everyone is a person first and a business partner or employee somewhere down the line – if we treat people like people, we can more easily come to good agreements.

I absolutely loved having Todd back on the show! We began by discussing the ins and outs of leadership development as technically-skilled people get promoted into larger and more significant leadership roles, and how coaching can really "fill the gaps" in acquiring the skills you need to lead well.

From there, we follow the conversation in some wonderful directions - it truly was hard to stop, we were having such a great chat!

This is an extra-special Part Two episode...because Bernadette and I had never met before!

Micheal, the previous host of this podcast and current host of The Remarkable Coach, had the pleasure of interviewing Bernadette last time, almost a year and a half ago. In that time, quite a bit has changed and evolved in her coaching business, and we get to talk about all of it today...in 15 all-too-brief minutes.

We cover Bernadette's "full-circle" business pivot back into the corporate world and some of the expired myths of leadership being shed by more leaders who understand that the old "command and control" or "dump and dictate" models are just not going to work anymore...if they ever really did.

Bernadette is a renowned business and success coach, speaker, author, and CEO of Ball of Fire Coaching who uses her decades of corporate savviness combined with her entrepreneurial spirit to help corporate professionals create riches in their careers and their lives.

Something that I’ve come to believe truly underscores the importance of coaching nowadays is how it fills a gap in our education.

This episode is the first of what I hope to be many special episodes of the Conversations with Coaches Podcast - a Part Two!

Paul Glover was one of my favorite conversations from a few months back, and when I sent out invitations to come back on for a Part Two, he was on my calendar before I could blink.

In this continuing conversation, Paul and I explore "the value of failure in achieving success." We go a little long in this episode, but only because the subject is so rich. This is an important conversation for all of us to have, I believe - as leaders and as human beings. Embracing what failure has to offer us is perhaps the key to our future, and sharing those stories is how we grow together.

A brief bio: Paul is a C-Suite performance coach with 20 years of experience as a federal court trial lawyer. He’s a passionate storyteller who believes in the power of narrative to influence and educate in the business world, personal life, and even courtrooms.

As a leadership coach, he works with individuals and organizations to increase leadership effectiveness. Dr. Johnston is recognized as an up-and-coming training and developing professional and a student of leadership.

Jamaal's approach to coaching and leadership is very well-represented by this excerpt from his LinkedIn profile:

"People have ideas of what leadership looks like. But real leadership rarely matches the images we have in our minds. Leadership is more than just standing on the bow of a rowboat crossing the Delaware River. Leadership is more than giving a speech on horseback while wearing blue face paint. Leadership is more than telling a crowd you have a dream from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Big moments spent leading on big stages are built by countless smaller moments leading in the trenches. Real leadership is about standards of thinking and the synthesis of multiple perspectives."

He's a passionate storyteller who believes in the power of narrative to influence and educate in the business world, personal life, and even courtrooms. He is also a member of the Forbes Coaches Council and the Author of “WorkQuake".

In today's slightly super-sized episode, Paul and I touch on many of the most foundational concepts of coaching. If I had to pick the two that are at the heart of our conversation, I'd choose Curiosity and Compassion.

It takes a real commitment to curiosity in order to discover the future you want for yourself, and an active compassion to make a meaningful difference.

I'm just scratching the surface here - Paul and I had a fantastic conversation that managed to cover so much fertile ground in so (relatively) little time.

Gregg is an award-winning, best-selling author, speaker, and executive coach who is on a mission to drive leadership and organizational upgrades via respect and Respectful Leadership.

Gregg is a great many things, but my favorite might be "passionate". He has a strong and unshakable belief in the importance and power of respect in every area of leadership and development. And I couldn't agree with him more!

We were only able to touch on a few of the steps during his long journey through coaching - his early experiences in professional theater in NYC that helped lead him to doing some ahead-of-its-time work with the NYPD on learning and training programs, his time as an international journalist, and the founding of The Center For Respectful Leadership.

Founded in 2019, The Center for Respectful Leadership is a non-profit, educational organization committed to supporting leadership and organizational transformation through active research, public dialogues, learning & development programs, and executive coaching - all focusing on the positive power and measurable impact of respect and Respectful Leadership.

Gregg is the real deal, and if we'd had the time I would've gone back and forth with him all day...although I did steal some extra time after we recorded to talk about our memories of the '86 Mets, one of my all-time favorites. :)

James has practiced diversity management as an enterprise performance tool for over 35 years. In addition to his current role as an executive coach to C-Suite executives, Dr. Rodgers serves as Director of the Executive Academy of ITSMF (Information Technology Senior Management Forum).

His mission is simple: to, “build leaders of color for a changing world.”

Pound-for-pound, this might be the most value-packed episode we've done yet! Dr. Rodgers has a warm and easy demeanor that invites you in immediately, then he hits you with perfectly-distilled pearls of wisdom that will take you less than a minute to understand...and a lifetime to fully learn. :)

We start with how he first realized he was a coach (mainly because that's what everyone called him naturally), and move on to his work through the ITSMF. We also touch on why it's so important for him to be "the right coach at the right time" for his clients, and how in his coaching he doesn't answer your questions so much as he "questions your answers".

As we were signing off, I expressed how I didn't want to be greedy with his time...because I easily could've kept him on the line and talked for hours. His response was perfect, and I'll think of it every time I end a great conversation:

"Let's be greedy again sometime."

Be a little greedy today and do yourself the favor of getting to know Dr. Rodgers. You won't be sorry.

Michael is the founder and CEO of TEAMS.COACH, LLC and a highly sought-after executive and business leadership coach. He helps business leaders clarify and execute at high levels through his proprietary T.E.A.M.S. Methodology to develop measurable business growth and company-wide collaboration.

In today's episode, we talk about his early lessons in leadership and organizational principles and the ways in which realizing how broadly applicable those values are led to him taking his next steps on the road to building his own coaching and leadership development business.

We also touch on the immense importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace, the pitfalls of a certain kind of "humility" (hint: think Imposter Syndrome), and why being approachable is one of his core values as a coach.

Speaking of approachable, Michael was kind enough to offer up his phone number (763-245-4984) for quick questions about coaching, or even for hopping on a Zoom call with him! Just don't abuse it - no spam texts or weird memes.

Gail Rudolph has spent years as an executive, maneuvering the power dynamics that happen in all interpersonal and business interactions. As the USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of Power Up Power Down, she's the go-to expert on harnessing interpersonal power and creating win/win outcomes.

In this episode, Gail and I dive into some of the key distinctions between coaching and consulting and the ways that "motivation" can be so much different than "inspiration" - especially when it comes to taking action.

We also talk about her Generational Awareness Program (GAP) and how, using the DISC assessment as a foundation, she explores the different ways that certain traits and characteristics manifest across the generations.

We even get into some of her work with famous author and thinker Robert Cialdini, and how "persuasion" isn't about selling someone something they don't want, but discovering and providing what they DO want.

Benj is a 10x founder and the chief architect of System & Soul—a business framework to help leaders everywhere gain clarity, control, and breakthrough. His goal is to transform 25,000 companies by 2030 - because small businesses are the life-blood of our communities.

In this episode, we talk about how Benj first discovered the tremendous satisfaction he experienced by being in the position of "guide", the very important difference between Consulting and Coaching, and how he's helping senior leaders become "torch-bearers" who pass this light and heat around to every member of their team.

We also touch on how important it is for leaders to not only refrain from obscuring truths about their business but also to actively work to unearth those truths and share them with everyone on the team. It's only then that the real work can begin.

Benj is definitely an experienced "podcasteur", which is a word I just made up for someone who's adept at both guesting on and hosting a podcast. He shares my passion for thinking less in terms of an interview and more in terms of a conversation - because that's where the real value is discovered.

Mic is the founder of Eleven Coaching. Their team of over 2 dozen coaches leaves people and organizations better than they found them, and that is what they are most proud of.

This episode is easily among the most entertaining and insightful conversations I’ve had for the pod. Rather than focus on himself and his coaching business, right from the jump Mic wanted to talk about coaching philosophies and practices – keeping the spotlight on the work and the people that benefit from it.
