Do you want to become self employed this year? Are you keen to find out what life is really like on the other side of having a job?
If you want to make the leap away from employment and earn your own living, this episode is for you.
Matthew Knight is a Strategy and Innovation Partner working for himself. Having left his job years ago to pursue this new path, Matthew has firsthand experience of the ups and downs that come with self employment.
In this episode, we discuss many of the areas that aren’t often told. Struggles with mental health, imposter syndrome, clients, companionship and more.
These are all such important topics, especially when you step into the uncertain path of self employment. I say this because going it alone brings a whole host of questions, choices and challenges. The so called ‘freedom’ that comes with working independently can very often lead to overwhelm, uncertainty and difficulty and we discuss our experiences of all these during this conversation.
Matthew was completely honest and authentic and I know this insight will be so useful to so many people in a similar situation.
Please enjoy my conversation with Matthew Knight.

Welcome again to Life Design Diaries, the business and lifestyle podcast where we bring you interesting conversations with interesting people.
On todays episode, I’m speaking with Tristan Thomas who is the Head of Marketing and Community at Monzo.
Monzo is the bank of the future. Since they started they’ve been busy building the best current account in the world an they now have more than one million customers using their debit cards. Unlike traditional banks, they have no high street premises, instead their service is provided by their app making it convenient and relevant to its customers.
To give you a slight insight into how popular this bank is becoming, recently they raised an additional £20m from a crowdfunding campaign… £18m of it came in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.
People who use Monzo, often turn into raving fans. Think about it, when was the last time you heard someone raving about a bank?
Tristan has pretty much been there from the start to drive this success and he’s only 26.
Please enjoy my conversation with Tristan Thomas.

“How can brands be built with customers” - Jamal Benmiloud
This week we’re thrilled to welcome a fantastic marketer and business owner, Jamal Benmiloud.
Jamal has had a glowing career. Having risen to become Head of Marketing at Redbull and VP Marketing at Monster Energy, he decided to stretch himself even further and start his own consultancy, EARN Studios.
Now Jamal works at Non Executive Director at Huel, a company we know well from episode #34 with Huel founder Julian Hearn.
This episode is one of our favourites by far! There is so much to learn from Jamal’s approach to business and life in general. In particular, we discuss:

I feel strange.
I'm not quite as busy as I could be, and it's giving me more time for chats and side projects, but I'm feeling like I am not really doing anything productive.
Why are we so tuned to feel like doing paid work is productive, but doing exploration, investment in yourself and future-facing work is less important?
If it was anyone else, i'd be telling them to embrace the quiet times, and make best use of it... but following your own advice is far harder than dishing it out.
That was the LinkedIn post I stumbled across which lead me to todays guest.
I didn’t write this post, and neither did she, but it was her answer to this post, addressing this situation of feeling unproductive when focussing on yourself that got me fascinated into how she thinks.
Rachel Tillman is a psychotherapist, she helps people and organisations, successfully navigate change as they work toward wholeness and more meaningful engagement. She uses creative, refreshing, and honest ways to do this and believes work should be life-giving.
Yes, on this podcast we’ve had on what you’d call ‘successful’ founders of companies in recent weeks to learn how they built the brands they are so proud of, but I’m so excited to share with you this episode with Rachel and provide a fascinating perspective on a whole host of topics that can no doubt help all of us listening in whatever pursuit you have.
Just a quick caveat, none of Rachel’s advice should be taken as medical advice. More, her thoughts on these wide ranging topics
Its a good one, please enjoy my conversation with Rachel Tillman.

These four magical books helped me personally make a mental pivot in my mind to break free of mental guilt, worrying and letting my own mind hold me back, paving the way for a happier, simpler life!
I’m very excited to share my conversation with Sarah herself, we have a chat about her lifestyle now in a sleepy coastal town in the Dominican Republic, her pilgrimage through each book, reactions to her no-fucks given approach and her new book, Calm The F**k Down.

If we feel bad when comparing ourselves to others, then we should simply stop comparing... Sound advice yes, but often a lot harder to do than the ‘simply’ suggests.

“Think like a big business and act like a small one”
What's the worst that can happen?
Well, when The Primal Pantry, a Paleo brand on a mission to start a real-food revolution, slipped from the heights of growing a £1.7m turnover business in only 3 years, to running out of cash and having to take a significant loan from an employee, this mantra of ‘what's the worst that can happen’ would surely have taken on a whole new meaning.
Welcome back to Life Design Diaries, I’m Lucy Menghini and on this episode I’m speaking with Suzie Walker, founder of the Primal Pantry.
It was amazing to get to know Suzie and hear her fascinating story including how she started, her path to growth and how she navigated this particularly tricky time all whilst balancing the rest of her life including being a great mum to her daughter.
If you’re looking to start or progress within the food industry, this episode provides some great advice for you. And if you’re not in the food game, you can take so much from Suzie’s thought process, approach to growth and decisions she’s made.
Suzie also reveals her 4 tips for maintaining a healthy diet later in the episode.

Hands up if you would like to be the owner of a brand that has grown so fast that in less than 3 years, that its gone from zero to turning over millions of pounds?
What about if you could take that brand into huge partnerships with some of the most sought after retailers in the UK? And what about if you could, say, have fans for your brand including Kylie Jenner, the whole love island cast and 342k of them on instagram.
Have you got your hand raised?
The Gypsy Shrine is the brand that has managed to do all of the above, like I said, in just three short years. The Gypsy Shrine is a creative cosmetic brand. They make face glitter, body jewels, glitter bums, glitter boobs, basically everything glitter and are adding to their products all the time as we discuss later.
I spoke with Jenna Meek, founder of the Gypsy Shrine and discussed the fascinating story how she and her, now growing team have managed to get into places the quite frankly, most startups would only dream about.
You’re of course listening to Life Design Diaries. I’m Ross Menghini and in typical fashion for this podcast, we’re not going to focus just on the sparkle, but dig deeper, into what its REALLY like to be the founder of such a business.
Jenna shared so much good stuff in this talk and I’m also honoured as this is Jenna’s first podcast interview, and so… you heard it here first, Jenna Meek of the Gypsy shrine .

When Oliver Bolton ordered 250,000 cans of his new drinks brand without any external market validation what so ever, he probably found himself in a little bit of a rut. Fast forward to today, he has not only made a success of that first business but evolved to create various drinks brands that you may have come across.
The particular brand I’m familiar with and enjoy is ‘What A Melon’ which is a brand of watermelon water.
In this conversation, Olly tells us how the idea for ‘What A Melon’ was born, his experience winning the Richard Brandson backed Virgin VOOM crowdfunded campaign which raising £77,000 and what life is now like as a drinks brand owner stocked in most food and drink retailers in the UK.
I spoke to Olly at their London HQ surrounded by as much melon merchandise as you could imagine. The walls were melon, the drinks were melon, the carpets were melon there was even a melon bike in the room.

“I’ve spent my life always wanting to have my own business”
Welcome to another episode of life design diaries where Lucy and I share simplified knowledge to help you live a fulfilling life on your own terms.
Now, if you’ve ever found yourself wanting a business but you just don’t have the idea yet then this interview is for you!
Andy Jefferies from Dock & Bay tells us his story of how he struggled to find his business idea, how he eventually found it, and the rapid journey that has now lead him on. This journey includes quitting his corporate career, going travelling and eventually arriving at Dragons Den, which for our American listeners is similar to shark tank.
Dock and Bay’s first product was the original quick-dry beach towels and with a polished pitch and beautiful brand, they not only secured Deborah Meaden as a new business partner but the grabbed the attention of the public watching and sold over 6000 units in 48 hours.
Another persons attention they captured was mine, and so thats why I’m particularly excited to share with you my conversation with Andy Jefferies.

On this episode of LIFE DESIGN DIARIES, we answer another one of your questions. If you would like to ASK us a question, please visit https://www.lifedesigndiaries.com/ask
Here is the question in full:
“Often It feels like women need to have it all, career, family, beauty, social life, domestic control, finances in check. Statistically, even when women are in high power jobs they still end up doing more of the ‘home’ tasks... it’s just feels HARD. Even though it’s probably more equal than it ever has been.
Lucy do you ever struggle with your identity as a ‘woman’ and which of these things you ‘should be’ doing? And do you think Ross has the same worries?
Ross - for you as a white man, do you have any advice to woman feeling under confident because of these pressures?”
We candidly discuss how women progress and stand on an equal playing field in 2018, and our thoughts on how women can grow a family and work at the same time.
We also talk about how clickbait, fake news and influential voices are incorrectly informing our opinions, and how important it is to be able to shut out the noise and make your own mind up.
We break down how we personally keep things level and balanced in our own relationship.

This episode is bought to you by TETTA one of Lucy’s very own companies. We’re extremely proud and excited to bring you this landmark episode by TETTA as it’s also an announcement of a big milestone for the company this week.
Having achieved a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, this week TETTA have now fulfilled all 500 backer orders consisting of 7000 hand stitched tassels!
TETTA is a clothing brand - tees, sweatshirts and earrings that all include tassels in some form. Having experienced cancer in the family last year, Lucy started TETTA alongside her cousin Georgia as a way to raise awareness and create a positive outcome to such a horrific and challenging situation.
Yes the clothes look great, but the real beauty in the brand is the impact they’re making to peoples lives. A portion of TETTAs tassels are hand made by people who’ve been touched in any way by cancer. These are people with cancer currently, have survived cancer or are wanting to support the cause regardless.
Making tassels in a therapeutic achievement and so far, TETTA has brought together over 50 people and growing who are all willing and proud to support the cause and raise awareness.
TETTA wants you to check your TETTAS! (which is your breasts in Italian) to spot any indication of cancer early on and help prevent it, and yes that means us guys too.
To celebrate this huge milestone, TETTA is having a 20% sale on all their products so head over to https://www.tetta.co.uk/ and take a look.

A big happy birthday to the Dalai Lama, a big source of inspiration for today’s podcast.
“The three factors that seem to have the greatest influence on increasing our happiness are our ability to reframe our situation more positively, our ability to experience gratitude, and our choice to be kind and generous.” - Dalai Lama
We take you through our thoughts after Lucy was recently praised for being selfish. Something she immediately thought of as a negative trait and took offence too. However, it inspired her to ponder on the topic and try to better understand the motivation of the comment.
We discuss the difference between happiness and joy, feeling guilty for doing what you love, biting the bullet, if you were in a life threatening car accident, and learning how to take the positives in everything life throws at you.
Lucy’s Joy Exercise
ie. learning something new, (for me it’s aromatherapy when I’m home)
ie. comparing yourself to others
ie. spending too much time on Instagram
ie. practicing meditation
ie. star grazing, waking up next to your loved on, a hug from a friend
ie. (it’s important to start with yourself) my tendency to assume
ie. practise lowering expectations and reliance on others

We discuss how significant or rather insignificant our human lives are. Yes this episode of LIFE DESIGN DIARIES gets pretty deep!
We also tackle the topic of PERMISSION because if we internalise just how short a time we have on this planet, then why is it we have things we want to do yet don’t do them?
Who are we waiting for to give us permission? How can we operate in a way that we take control and pursue the things we want without getting caught up and hindered by life’s many challenges?
We cover a lot in this episode including:

This episode is all about property and investing. We answer your question that has been submitted via our website:
“Please advise on how to get on the property ladder. Also how do you identify what’s a good investment?”
If you would like to ask us a question for a future episode, please head over to https://www.lifedesigndiaries.com/question
It’s important to remember that property is a type of investment and as with any investment, there are pros and cons.
We share our experience and learnings of building a property portfolio which of course starts with buying our first property. How we did I it and different ways in which you can get into property investing.
We talk about the importance of saving. Plus how you can educate yourself on money to improve your all round financial education.
As well as an overview, we also discuss the specifics of what to look for in a solid property investment. Where to buy and what fundamentals to look for.
We get asked a lot about how we’ve managed to build a large property portfolio at a young age and so are really keen to share this episode with you. We hope it gives you the basis of knowledge needed to get started.
This is an overview however, and if you would like more information or one to one support, please message us via email lifedesigndiaries@gmail.com and we’d be happy to help!

Stress
Our topic of the week is stress. How and when we’ve felt stressed in the past and what we do to overcome stress.
We talk about the different types of stress and what you can do to change your own perspective that can benefit you and leave you feeling more positive.
Lucy has some interesting techniques and exercises for managing her mentality which we also wanted to share.

This conversation delves far deeper than just Amazon tips.
When Irina Balyurko approached me to be on the show, I was particularly interested to hear how she realized that climbing the corporate ladder was taking her in the opposite direction of how she wanted to live. She took the decision to leave her prestigious role as a VP and go travelling with her husband and at the time, 18 month old son.
In this episode, we dig into into Irina’s story, how she evaluates risk, what it’s like travelling with a young son, and how to be stand out and be successful on Amazon.
The worlds largest online retailer Amazon is a huge opportunity for anyone wanting to explore commerce and selling products online.
Irina is now an e-commerce strategist who helps product-based brands launch and thrive on Amazon. Over her career, Irina has helped hundreds of brands generate millions of dollars in sales on Amazon, and achieve such results as, doubling sales in 3 months, and growing over 500% in sales in a year.
We also discuss some of the challenges faced when wanting to climb the corporate ladder as a mother but also wanting to balance seeing her son and family.

This episode is PACKED full of practical advise, tips and lessons we’ve learned to grow your business.
Firstly we talk through how to change your thinking and answer the IMPORTANT questions in order to develop your brand.
Having struggled for many days putting a website together for a new product we’re launching, we reminded ourselves that people buy your mission (your WHY), rather than your product features.
Focussing on features alone is lazy thinking until you have developed the deeper, more meaningful mission of the company. That’s what people are going to relate to.
In the second half of the episode, we cover the topic of sales. We’ve both grown so much since we learned the art of sales and want to share our thoughts on just how important it is in everyday life as well as business.
We cover some practical tips we use to get in front of people and build a strong relationship.
This episode covers loads of topics within the two broad categories of your mission and sales. More specifically:

In this episode we tackle goal setting: how to do it and how to simplify it. We also talk about the lessons learned reflecting on 12 months since starting a business and we give an overview on our current location, Chiang Mai.
When we woke on our first day in Chiang Mai, we sat out on our balcony, coffee in hand, and talked through goals we’d set in Bali and Vietnam, what we’ve achieved, what we hadn’t & why we hadn’t. Recalibrate and set more for the next 4 weeks in Thailand.
This activity that we force ourselves to do has become an important activity for many different reasons, all of which we explain to you in our 10th episode.
This month also marks 12 months of being self employed for Lucy. We talk through how it all came about, her main lessons and reflect on important moments. It’s a great listen if you have itchy feet or just starting out for yourself. You’re not alone in your thoughts.

We tackle a difficult topic in this episode: Hyper productivity and perfectionism. We answer ‘How do we maintain balance in life, work & relationships?'
With the current world hitting us from every angle with messages that we need to be better, richer, slimmer, more and live the ‘perfect’ life, we have some strong opinions on why this is wrong and how to manage it and take control.
We give a global perspective on the subject, having witnessed and studied how some of the far east behave and react.
We talk minimalism and the power it has to free the mind. After all, it’s important sometimes to ask yourself the question: What am I working so hard to keep up for? Is it the current pressures of society or is it your perception of those pressures?
We discuss the devastating news this week of DJ and producer Avicii. At only 28 years old it has come to light days ago that he sadly took his own life. Being the same age as him, this really hit home and made us evaluate some difficult questions on what happiness is and how you can never understand what someone else is thinking and so shouldn’t compare yourself to other people. It will only bring negativity.
Instead, the answer is surely to look internally. Focussing on yourself and doing the things YOU want to do.
We talk life coaches and mentors. How to find them and where we gather inspiration from.
Finally, we talk about how to do the things you want to do.

Imposter Syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychosomatic pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud".
Analysis paralysis or paralysis by analysis is the state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome.
Both of these are experienced by us (and most people) most days. We dig into the definition of these and discuss some of the methods and rationalisation techniques we have used to overcome them, leading to positive outcomes.
