This episode has been recorded with Farming Connect Specialist Officers, Lynfa Davies and Geraint Jones. They explore what invasive non‑native species are and why they matter, particularly in woodland and farm environments. We explain how these plants, animals, and pathogens—often introduced through human activity—can spread rapidly, outcompete native species, and disrupt entire ecosystems. From tree diseases like ash dieback to damaging pests such as the yellow-legged Asian hornet, we discuss the real impacts: loss of biodiversity, threats to local wildlife, economic costs, and long-term damage to landscapes. Put simply, these are species that don't belong—and when they take hold, the environment pays the price.

Gwesteion digroeso: Effaith gynyddol rhywogaethau anfrodorol goresgynnol Mae'r bennod hon wedi'i recordio gyda Lynfa Davies a Geraint Jones, Swyddogion Arbenigol Cyswllt Ffermio. Maent yn archwilio beth yw rhywogaethau anfrodorol goresgynnol a pham eu bod yn bwysig, yn enwedig mewn amgylcheddau fferm a choetir. Rydym yn egluro sut y gall y planhigion, yr anifeiliaid a'r pathogenau hyn—a gyflwynir yn aml trwy weithgaredd dynol—ledaenu'n gyflym, trechu rhywogaethau brodorol, ac amharu ar ecosystemau cyfan. O glefydau coed fel clefyd coed ynn i blâu niweidiol fel y gacynen felyngoes, rydym yn trafod yr effeithiau go iawn: colli bioamrywiaeth, bygythiadau i fywyd gwyllt lleol, costau economaidd, a difrod hirdymor i dirweddau. Yn syml, dyma rywogaethau nad ydynt yn perthyn i'r amglychedd—a phan fyddant yn cydio, mae'r amgylchedd yn talu'r pris.

In this episode of Ear to the Ground, host Ifan Jones Evans visits Wallog, a coastal sheep farm perched on the rugged Cardigan coastline near Clarach, Ceredigion. Wallog has long faced the challenge of ensuring a reliable drinking-water supply for its flock of outdoor-lambing ewes, relying on an ageing system of seasonal springs, wells and reservoir tanks in one of Wales' lowest rainfall areas.

With pumps working hard to move water uphill through difficult terrain—and an old pipe network vulnerable to leaks—the farm has historically struggled with high electricity use, water loss and inefficiency.

But change is underway.

Guest David Evershed shares how he is embracing LoRaWAN technology to monitor water flow across the farm in real time, detect leaks early and ultimately automate water pumping. The vision? A smart, energy-efficient system powered by newly installed photovoltaic (PV) panels—reducing waste, cutting costs and securing the farm's water future.

Join us for an insightful conversation exploring how digital innovation and renewable energy are transforming traditional farming challenges at Wallog.

Ffermio'n ddoethach, nid yn galetach: Llwyddiant Wallog i Arbed Dŵr

Yn y bennod hon o Glust i'r Ddaear, mae'r cyflwynydd Ifan Jones Evans yn ymweld â Wallog, fferm ddefaid arfordirol sydd wedi'i lleoli ar arfordir garw Aberteifi, ger Clarach, Ceredigion. Mae Wallog wedi wynebu'r her o sicrhau cyflenwad dŵr yfed dibynadwy ar gyfer ei ddiadell o famogiaid sy'n wyna yn yr awyr agored ers tro byd. A hynny, gan ddibynnu ar system sy'n heneiddio o ffynhonnau tymhorol a thanciau cronfeydd dŵr yn un o'r ardaloedd sydd â'r lefelau isaf o law yng Nghymru.

Gyda phympiau'n gweithio'n galed i symud dŵr i fyny drwy dir anodd a hen rwydwaith pibellau sy'n agored i ollyngiadau, mae'r fferm wedi cael trafferth yn hanesyddol gyda defnydd uchel o drydan, colli dŵr ac aneffeithlonrwydd.

Ond mae newid ar y gweill.

Mae'r gwestai David Evershed yn rhannu sut mae'n croesawu technoleg LoRaWAN i fonitro llif dŵr ar draws y fferm mewn amser real, canfod gollyngiadau'n gynnar ac yn y pen draw awtomeiddio'r pwmp dŵr. Y weledigaeth? System glyfar, effeithlon o ran ynni, wedi'i phweru gan baneli ffotofoltaidd (PV) sydd newydd eu gosod gan leihau gwastraff, lleihau costau a sicrhau dyfodol cyflenwad dŵr y fferm.

Ymunwch â ni am sgwrs ddeallus sy'n edrych ar sut mae arloesedd digidol ac ynni adnewyddadwy yn trawsnewid heriau ffermio traddodiadol yn Wallog.

Farmers know their land better than anyone — but keeping track of the wildlife that visits their farms can be a challenge. Traditional bird surveys require time and specialist knowledge, so a new project is turning to innovative, AI‑powered technology to help. In this episode, we explore how Chirrup acoustic monitors are being used across fourteen farms in Wales to automatically capture and identify birdsong during the dawn chorus. These small, battery‑powered devices record daily over a 2–3 week period, generating invaluable insights into the birdlife found on a wide range of farm types, from upland sheep farms to productive lowland dairy units. Farming Connect Biodiversity Officer Lynfa Davies visits Rhys Davies of Moor Farm in Holywell to discover which species are thriving on his North Wales dairy farm. They're joined by ornithologist Keith Offord, who helps unpack the project's encouraging findings and what they reveal about biodiversity on working farms. Tune in to learn how technology, farming, and conservation are coming together to better understand and support Wales's bird populations. In this short episode we will again be visiting Lower House farm, Llandrindod. This time we hear from Dr Rhys Jones, Lecturer from the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University. Rhys is originally from North Wales, and was raised on an upland beef and sheep farm. He still takes a keen interest in the family farm as well as wider Agriculture issues. His research interests lie within the field of veterinary parasitology, and he's particularly interested in developing sustainable parasite control techniques for livestock producers.    Rhys discusses how Rob Lyons has been part of a wider project that includes 16 farms that are looking at Liver Fluke. With liver fluke populations rapidly becoming resistant to certain drug treatments, alternative control strategies which focus on infection avoidance through grazing and land management must be utilised on farms. However, for these measures to be effective, it is imperative that we can accurately identify liver fluke infection risk areas within farms and fields.

Mae ei ddiddordebau ymchwil ym maes parasitoleg filfeddygol, ac mae ganddo ddiddordeb arbennig mewn datblygu technegau rheoli parasitiaid cynaliadwy ar gyfer cynhyrchwyr da byw. Mae Rhys yn trafod sut mae Rob Lyons wedi bod yn rhan o brosiect ehangach sy’n cynnwys 16 fferm sy’n edrych ar Lyngyr yr Iau. Wrth i boblogaethau llyngyr yr iau ddatblygu ymwrthedd yn gyflym i rai triniaethau cyffuriau, mae'n rhaid defnyddio strategaethau rheoli amgen sy'n canolbwyntio ar osgoi haint trwy bori a rheoli tir ar ffermydd. Fodd bynnag, er mwyn i’r mesurau hyn fod yn effeithiol, mae’n hollbwysig ein bod yn gallu nodi’n gywir yr ardaloedd lle mae risg o haint llyngyr yr iau ar ffermydd a chaeau.

This episode focusses on the new environmental expectations of farmers in Wales particularly around the management of nutrients. From the 1st January 2020, new rules will be introduced to control when nitrogen and organic fertilisers are spread on the land, how much storage capacity is required for slurry as well as the need to prepare detailed plans and records.

In anticipation of these new rules, Farming Connect organised an event (in partnership with the AHDB) at Gelli Aur College Farm. One of the main speakers was a Dutch Nuffield Farming Scholar, Rick de Vor. Aled caught up with him during the day to learn more about how he’s adapted to farm within some very strict regulations over nutrient management and how he’s seen some benefits to his business.
