This week we got to speak with Dr. Jennifer Solomon. Dr. Solomon is an award-winning, board-certified physiatrist, specializing in spine and sports medicine. Most recently, she served as an Attending Physiatrist for 18 years at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC.
Dr. Solomon’s philosophy as a non-operative specialist is to properly diagnose the injury—identifying the root cause of a patient’s pain—and pursue a proactive treatment plan. Whether utilizing non-operative procedures, physical therapy, or a specified strength and conditioning plan with preventative care, Dr. Solomon works with the patient every step of the way so they can return to a pain-free, injury-free, active lifestyle.
Dr. Solomon has served as a team physician for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) on the WTA Tour and has worked numerous sporting events, including the NYC Marathon. She has been recognized annually by Castle Connolly as one of New York’s Top Doctors since 2013. Dr. Solomon is a born and raised New Yorker and currently resides in NYC with her two daughters, Samantha and Alexis. She is an athlete at heart, having grown up as a Junior Tennis Star and collegiate tennis athlete. Dr. Solomon still plays tennis for fun, is an avid cyclist, and has a passion for all things fitness and exercise.
In this podcast episode we got to talk about: - Functional and mechanical assessment - Research in clinical practice - Pros and cons of PRP injections vs other interventions - Building effective relationships between Physiatry and Physical Therapy
Jennifer Solomon and her group at the Regenerative SportsCare Institute are blazing a trail for the future of MSK Medicine. It was great speaking with her and learning about the innovations coming from that area of MSK care. We hope you learn from this episode and enjoy the episode as much as we did.

On this special episode of the TelePT Connections Podcast we have 3 esteemed members of the APTA Government Affairs team - Justin Elliott, David Scala, and Kate Gilliard.
Each of them is extremely knowledgeable about the legal, policy and political issues most PTs don't have to the time for and don't want to dig into. Yet, these are the issues that govern our everyday practice and without their representation, PT would have no footing in the healthcare delivery and payment system. I'm very grateful for all the work they do on our behalf and we need to keep doing our part to support the cause of our profession.
On this episode we discuss the major issues in the 2022 Proposed Medicare Fee Schedule:
As mentioned in the podcast, please go to Patient Action Center (https://www.apta.org/advocacy/take-action/patient-action-center) and pass this on to your colleagues, patients, family, and friends. Our issues affect all of them and we need all the support we can get.
This was an extremely informative episode of the TelePT Connections Podcast. Every PT, PTA and anyone who cares about the future of our profession needs to listen to this podcast and take actions that will ensure the successful future of our profession.
Also, these folks were mentioned on the podcast. Please visit them, thank them for their support, and ask them how we can help them help us:

Welcome to this episode of the TelePT Connections Podcast. We went into this episode expecting it to be about the origins of telehealth and telemedicine because our guest was using video visits more than 5 years ago. So we touched on that with Dr Bragg, but you never know where a podcast episode might go. We prepare. We have our set of basic questions. Sometimes though, you have a guest who just leads with their personality and charisma and everything else is secondary. Dr Winifred Bragg is one such guest. She takes a very traditional approach to one-on-one care with her patients and makes every effort to connect with them on a personal level, all for the objective of helping them heal and feel better. She's smart, empathetic and so personable. She's a special doctor. Here's a little background on Dr Bragg...
Winifred Bragg, MD is a nationally recognized speaker, board-certified physician and the CEO of the Spine and Orthopedic Pain Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Bragg has appeared in numerous TV and print media programs. She’s been published in Redbook, Woman’s World and Self Magazine and her online articles have had tens of thousands of views.
During this episode we got to speak about:
Dr. Bragg’s first book “KnockOutPain®: Secrets to Maintain a Healthy Back,” was an Amazon Best-Seller. Check it out (link below).
As always, please leave your comments on LinkedIn and YouTube, subscribe to the podcast and share it with friends and colleagues.
We had a great conversation with Dr Bragg. I hope you learn a lot from this one and enjoy the episode as much as we did.

Our guest this week is David Fried. David is the CEO of Evolv, a medical device manufacturer which uses VR, motion capture technologies, and gaming to treat neuromotor and age-related diseases and conditions. He studied architecture in his native Canada and later in Spain where he practiced for several years before setting up an interactive digital media firm in Bilbao in 2004.
David later joined Virtualware in 2012 to help develop novel VR and AR hardware solutions. He then became Director of Virtualware’s UK office where he got deeply involved with their new product called VirtualRehab (now called EvolvRehab®), a pioneering virtual therapy application designed to improve rehabilitation through gaming.
In 2017, Virtualware founded Evolv with the aim of further developing virtual rehabilitation technologies and expanding the use of its CE certified EvolvRehab® platform for telerehabilitation and prevention. Since then, David has helped expand the use of EvolvRehab® into 20 countries where it has been used by thousands of people of all ages and levels of disability. He recently led Evolv’s entry into the Microsoft Social Entrepreneurship Program.
In this podcast episode we got to talk about: - The value of repetition and high rep volume following a stroke - Therapy games, gamification, and VR - PT/OT practitioner contribution to software development and design - Payment and reimbursement for rehab assistance tools like AR/VR - The future of healthcare
David Fried and Evolv are onto something big and their product design is so user friendly because they endlessly gather feedback from practitioners and patients. This approach leads to continuous design improvements, increased engagement, and improved outcomes - and their research confirms it.

A cortical homunculus is a distorted representation of the human body, based on a neurological "map" of the areas and proportions of the human brain dedicated to processing motor or sensory functions, for different parts of the body. A cortical homunculus, or "cortex man", illustrates the concept of a representation of the body lying within the brain. Nerve fibres—conducting somatosensory information from all over the body—terminate in various areas of the parietal lobe in the cerebral cortex, forming a representational map of the body.
Every MD, PT, and OT learns about the homunculus in school but very few understand it, apply it, and clearly explain the relevance of the homunculus as well as our good friend and first repeat guest, Dr. David Sofer.
On this week’s episode, Dave gives us a review of the homunculus and how it applies to pain and pain management. Also during this episode, he drops multiple knowledge bombs:
Dave is a wealth of knowledge and he's also very entertaining. That's why we had him back on the podcast.
Dr. David Sofer, DPT is a physical therapist, educator, entrepreneur, patient rights advocate and life-long learner. Clinical practice is his passion, and he loves sharing that with his patients in the office, students at SUNY Downstate PT program and with followers of his arthritis management website www.ArthritisHelp.info.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Thank you for listening to the PT Connections Podcast.

Our special guests this week are 2 women who are changing the game in musculoskeletal care. Stephanie Wakeman is a PT and Megan Doyle is an OT. Together they founded Navigate Pain, a concierge service designed to move pain care “upstream” and empower individuals and companies with the strategies needed to treat pain from a comprehensive, self-management focus.
Stephanie Wakeman, PT DPT cert-APHPT. Stephanie has 25 years of experience working in all areas of physical therapy, most notably in outpatient orthopedics in both private practice and large hospital systems. She started her telehealth career with Physera/Omada and currently is involved in two separate start up digital health companies, OneStep(https://onestep.co/) and Navigate Pain (https://navigateyourpain.com/). She is an active member of Academy of Prevention and Health Promotion Therapies earning a certification in prevention and health promotion (https://www.aphpt.org/). She is also a volunteer in the PTHealth (https://www.pthealthstudy.org/) study which is collaboration to develop a system which detects, interprets, and minimizes the impact of acute distress/illness using existing wearable technology. Stephanie is active in advocacy for the profession of Physical Therapy and currently is a Delegate for American Physical Therapy Association and a member of Health promotion and wellness council.
Email: Stephanie.wakeman@aphpt.org Linkedin: Stephanie Wakeman Twitter: @stephanieDeShan
Megan Doyle, MS, OTR/L, FPS, Cert-APHPT Megan graduated from Marquette University with a BS in Exercise Science and a Psychology Minor in 2010, then obtained a MS in Occupational Therapy from Indiana University in 2012. In her initial years as an occupational therapist, she worked in a multitude of settings focused on adult populations, but always felt drawn to mental and behavioral health, wellness, and pain management. This led to Megan obtaining certification as a Therapeutic Pain Specialist through ISPI/EIM in 2017, which she followed by achieving Fellowship in Pain Sciences in 2020. In addition, she has certification as an Applied Prevention Health Promotion Therapist. Megan provides routine consultation to both individuals and groups regarding treatment for both acute and persistent pain from a holistic, person-centered perspective as well as presenting annually at both local and national conferences as well as teaching courses on pain and wellness topics to both healthcare and within the community. She became a co-founder of Navigate Pain, LLC in 2021 to move pain care “upstream” and empower individuals and companies with the strategies they need to treat pain from a comprehensive, self-management focus.
Links: LinkedIn: Megan Doyle Instagram: meganosgooddoyle81112 E-mail: meganosgooddoyle81112@gmail.com
Navigate Pain is changing the game by intervening with individuals who are at-risk for long-term musculoskeletal conditions by getting to them before their cases become chronic, avoiding multiple complications before they have a chance to manifest.
We had a great conversation about this process and how they plan to interrupt the current system of that's overly dependent on the treating practitioner. Patients should be in control of their own health and Navigate Pain provides them with the tools to do that. We hope you enjoy this episode. Please leave your comments.

This week, we are joined by Jan Ground, PT. Jan led innovation and virtual care at Kaiser Permanente Colorado, where she worked for 18 years. Currently, she is the Colorado Liaison to the Southwest Telehealth Resource Center and the Colorado Ambassador to Telehealth and Medicine Today, an online peer-reviewed journal. Very active with leadership roles in the American Telemedicine Association, Jan leads a group looking to prove, with the use of data, that telehealth is worth paying for, even after COVID-19. And telehealth is not just video visits!
Ms. Ground's greatest expertise is in leading change, a significant need in implementing virtual care, and in working with leaders to clearly define a measurable problem before implementing a new approach to care. Her greatest passion now is working with healthcare leaders to lower the cost of the American healthcare system without lowering clinical outcomes OR improving clinical outcomes without increasing the cost.
Jan led Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s first Innovation Team, and she is an expert at asking provocative questions that lead to viable solutions and 360 degree buy-in. You'll hear Jan work her magic in this episode and I'm sure this discussion will make you think about how you approach innovation and change in your life.

This week, Daniel Seidler and Adrian Miranda are joined by David Dansereau. David has practically written the book on how to successfully navigate an unconventional career in Physical Therapy. He's been in corporate health research, private practice, remote and mobile consulting, digital therapeutic product development, sports performance, and more.
Most notably, in 2006, at age 39, David had a stroke. That life altering experience has guided his life and career since. At the time, he utilized existing telehealth tools to access worldwide experts throughout his self-guided recovery. The experience has fueled his passion for digital-first healthcare technology adoption and using sensors and biofeedback to help give patients more control over their own health and recovery.
David's story is epic and inspirational and his credits are extensive. He also is the most prepared guest we've had so far. We get into several of our wheelhouse topics and more:

On this special episode of the TelePT Connections Podcast, Adrian and Dan do a state of the union for TelePT - the past, present, and future.
The world has changed dramatically in the past year and telehealth has been at the heart of that change. The stage has been set for a new frontier in digital health and healthcare delivery in general. How will that affect physical therapy practice? What can PTs and other providers do to position themselves to be most impactful with their patients and their communities going forward?

Welcome to this episode of the TelePT Connections Podcast. Our guest this week is Katie Ford, direct from Tulsa, Oklahoma. You can find Katie at cultivatestrength.com
Katie is a strength coach with over six years of experience and she’s also wrapping up her second year in the University of Oklahoma's Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. She’s been working as a coach entirely online for the past two years and has been tweaking her current practice to prepare to offer cash-based telehealth PT services next year.
In addition, Katie is opening a business incubator in Tulsa next month for other clinicians and coaches in her area that are interested in entrepreneurship and need a safe space to work on their side gig.
When I asked Katie if there’s anything she didn’t want us to get into on the podcast, she told me “No. I’m very much an open book and pathologically friendly.” I’m from NY so that’s a little foreign to me, but it definitely makes for an entertaining podcast. Katie is smart and creative and she’s innovating in our space before she’s even a licensed PT. She also has great energy, so this was a lot of fun. Enjoy the episode.

This week on the TelePT Connections Podcast, our esteemed guest is Professor Marc Campo. Dr Campo has been teaching at the Mercy College Doctorate of Physical Therapy program since 2002.
His teaching focus is on rehabilitation research methods. Marc’s courses teach Mercy students to become educated consumers of the research literature and develop the skills needed to become entry-level clinical researchers.
Marc has done extensive research on the physical effects of patient handling and manual therapy on Physical Therapists – so he’s looking out for all of us. He was even awarded the 2012 Bernice Owen Award for Research in Safe Patient Handling. I never thought much about applications of technology to patient handling, but Dr Campo sure has, and you’ll hear some of his brilliant ideas on this podcast.
We also get into:
Marc is one of the smartest PTs we know and he’s a great communicator. This podcast does not disappoint. Be prepared to have your mind blown.
Daniel Seidler has been a Physical Therapist since graduating from Columbia University in 1996. Telehealth PT has been his passion and his mission since 2018. His practice, TelaPT offers white-labeled Telehealth PT services to PT practices, third-party payers and value-based organizations caring for specific patient populations.
Adrian Miranda is a Physical Therapist who loves storytelling. From an early age he saw the power of television and film. While he was in PT school he knew he wanted to combine video and health, but he wanted to take it a step further... Adrian's goal is to use television, film, and VR to create a connection that educates people about their bodies and also motivates them to take action. Digital health is becoming better at analyzing us, but taking the extra step to take action and change behavior is a challenge, likely because it is boring. Adrian is on a mission to provide healthcare entertainment!
Jerry Durham is a Physical Therapist by training who has a singular passion for leveraging the entire practice team towards improved patient outcomes while boosting the practice bottom line.
A Physical Therapist with over 25 years of experience and 20+ years of business ownership, including practice ownership, consulting and business coaching, Jerry has spent significant time on the front line, answering calls and learning why patients think and act the way they do when interacting with the front desk.
On this week’s episode, Adrian and Dan are joined by a very special guest, their good friend, Dr. David Sofer, DPT. Dave is a physical therapist, educator, entrepreneur, patient rights advocate and life-long learner. Clinical practice is his passion, and he loves sharing that with his patients in the office, students at SUNY Downstate PT program and with followers of his arthritis management website www.ArthritisHelp.info.
Dave shares a bunch of stories about his PT career as a practice owner, as an influential leader in the NYPTA, and about his unique experience as the son of a PT legend, Dr. Roslyn Sofer.
Dave’s a good buddy of both of ours and he’s got a lot to say about the PT profession today and where it will be in the future. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Thank you for listening to the PT Connections Podcast.
