Top-rated weekly lifestyle podcast, brand, and community where women of color come to commune. Hosted by media veteran and entrepreneur, Loni Swain. This is a safe space for sharing our honest, relatable, and inspiring stories of navigating personal and professional transitions. Each episode serves as a resource of support to help us process experiences and potentially challenge our perspective. We also discuss the parts of our journey that we often find uncomfortable to talk about – we’re digging into them here in hopes of helping to normalize and destigmatize vulnerability, but to also positively impact other women's outcomes. Creating community and conscious connection, one authentic conversation at a time. Some common themes are wellness, entrepreneurship, mental health, dating/relationships and self-development in candid, vulnerable chats with fascinating guests. Join me and my guests as we live and learn more about ourselves and life, together. Let’s start the conversation.
I’m joined by creative multi-hyphenate @j.st.jaimes to discuss her journey from corporate to full-time entrepreneur, how she transitioned from canvas to skin, how Covid impacted her career and industry, and how she has re-defined success.
Inspired by both avant-garde and minimalist painters, j.’s loves for the juxtaposition of clean beauty and the oddly peculiar is present in her work. As a self-taught artist, her journey into the world of makeup began as a painter. Making the transition from canvas to skin not only expanded her range of skill but portfolio as well. j.’s aesthetic has elevated her to collaborate with such leading brands as Nike, Atlantic Records, Converse, Verizon, Kohler, Dillard’s, Adidas, MSNBC, AT&T, Hurley and others. Her complete body of work includes television, theater, editorials, fashion/trade shows, bridal, and brand campaigns.

I'm joined by special guest Dr. Akilah Jefferson Shah, MD - Immunologist - Allergist to discuss the latest COVID-19 updates and what you need to know about the vaccine.
**One question that we discussed off-air: After the two rounds of vaccines do you have to get it every year like a flu shot or is that after that?
It's not clear yet. That’s only because the virus has only been around for less than a year and the studies have only been going for a few months so they don’t have enough data at this point to know if you’ll need more shots annually or what. But the current studies are going to continue even after the vaccines are FDA approved and they’re gonna continue to look at the people's blood work and immune system to see what’s happening to determine the answer to that question.

With the holidays in full swing, many will find ourselves with family members who we haven't seen most of the year - and sometimes by choice. As if boundary setting, in general, wasn't hard enough, try setting boundaries with family members! As an adult, many conversations with friends reveal dysfunctional family dynamics that lack boundaries altogether or very few in place. This realization then sparks the conversation: how does one go about implementing healthy boundaries when the life span of the relationship has been without them?
Some may be asking - What is a boundary?
Thomas Fischer, M.Div states “Personal boundaries define you as an individual, outlining your likes and dislikes, and setting the distances you allow others to approach. They include physical, mental, psychological and spiritual boundaries, involving beliefs, emotions, intuitions, and self-esteem.” SOURCE
In this episode of The Loni Swain Show Podcast, my guest Dr. Pia Holec will help us navigating determining our boundaries and how to approach implementation with family and loved ones.
Dr. Pia Holec is a psychotherapist at Resilience Psychological Services. Here she specializes in working with minority populations in the areas of sex therapy, relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, and trauma. Dr. Holec received her Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She completed her clinical internship at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York, New York. Here she received extensive training at the Addiction Institute of New York and the Center for The Intensive Treatment of Personality Disorders. Prior to this, Dr. Holec trained at Rush University Medical Center, Marital and Sex Therapy Department in Chicago, Illinois where she gained specialized training in working with couples and treating sexual dysfunctions. Dr. Holec has worked with individuals, couples, and families presenting with a variety of clinical concerns including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, PTSD, complex trauma, and addictions. Dr. Holec specializes in the successful treatment of Female Hyposexual Arousal Disorder, Dyspareunia, Vaginismus, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Premature Ejaculation, Erectile Dysfunction, unconsummated marriages, gender dysphoria, and LGBTQ+ concerns.

Rewinding to one of my favorite episodes. I recently re-listened to this episode and deeply needed to reminder and thought I'd share with you while we navigate the holiday season and interact with people who we may wish to connect with on a deeper level. This conversation can offer some perspective.
Jenny D. Brice is helping us to better understand attachment theory and how we can use it to deepen our connections. Deepening our connections can result in more joy, satisfaction and fulfillment in our relationships. Jenny says in fact that “There’s nothing more disheartening than spending time tending to your mind, body and spirit, only to return day after day to a relationship where you feel emotionally unsafe and abandoned, with no tools to communicate your needs effectively. If your relationships are not nourishing you, they’re depleting you.”
Jenny believes in the power of personal narratives to radically re-shape one’s life, relationships and experiences. Her mission is to elevate and encourage the practice of self-realization through awareness, acceptance, compassion, communication and appreciation; with the knowledge that people are genuinely doing the best they can with the mindsets and resources they have.
Jenny is a clinically trained Psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of Individuals, Couples and Families. She is Core Skills certified and trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Level I trained in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She is also a Level II Usui Reiki Practitioner, a thirteen-year Public Health Professional and passionate Wellness Enthusiast. Her aim is to support clients in vibrating higher in all aspects of their human experience, by helping them improve the quality of the tools within their reach. From the concrete and analytical to the experiential and spiritual, Jenny utilizes an integrative approach to cultivate healing.

- I learned SOOOOOOO much! Because I am not yet the recommended age to start receiving annual mammograms, I had no clue what the process was like, nor was I aware of the next steps if there were to be abnormal findings. I personally know several breast cancer survivors and 4 of them are under the suggested screening age of 40. So how do we protect and early detect before then? We discussed this and so much more! Like: how do breast implants impact your risks for breast cancer, if at all? We discussed breast cancer in men, and the many misconceptions about breast cancer. - - Plus we talked about Dr. Morell's journey to becoming one of very few women, let alone women of color, in the field of radiology. First solo episode in a while.
Addressing a listener question from a previous episode: "When does normal anxiety become an anxiety disorder?"
and then my two cents on minding our mental health and keeping the "should" to ourself.
I don't know about you, but I've had people tell me what I should and should not be stressed or anxious about. I've had people tell me that because things could be worse, my current circumstances didn't warrant discontent or my level of frustration. This episode is to remind you and them that we all have unique triggers and stressors and everyone needs to mind their own mental health and keep their "should" to themself. In honor of the last week of mental health, lets take the time to be more thoughtful and compassionate about how we respond to people in their time of need, even when we can't relate or understand.

Although most adults have had sex in their lifetime, in 2019 - sex still remains a taboo topic for many. In this episode of the podcast, Dr. Pia Holecand I shine a light on three highly common sex issues that aren't being discussed, how to identify them and how to begin to work through them. You are NOT alone. Join the conversation and help normalize the discussion to increase awareness and education about these issues that affect many of us and end the stigma. Three common issues are: 1. Lack of sexual desire (both men and women). Often times this is a result of a past trauma, unconsummated relationship (sometimes due to religious beliefs), or lack of self-exploration (i.e. masturbation) 2. Genito-Pelvic Pain/Disorder. This can involve either a constriction of the pelvis that makes intercourse nearly impossible for cis-gendered women, or pain (burning/ripping) with penetration. 3. Erectile Dysfunction/Premature ejaculation. Often times this is a result of psychological factors, not just biological concerns In this episode of the podcast, Dr. Pia Holec is going to address what these issues are, possible causes and ways to begin to resolve them. Dr. Pia Holec is a psychotherapist at Resilience Psychological Services in Chicago where she specializes in working with minority populations in the areas of sex therapy, relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, and trauma. The emotional attachment women have to their hair, especially women of color, dates back as far as biblical times and the Civil War. History has taught us over and over again that hair is not only a huge part of a woman's identity, but also a representation of her femininity - of course thats if you believe that men can dictate and define femininity. Well, so many of us women have believed what men have told, taught and impressed upon us and in this episode I'm talking about some of those things and how they made me question my decision to cute my own hair, how that cut took a toll on my self-confidence and how I restored it!

There once was a time when I was afraid to say NO. Afraid that it would make me less likable or even a bad person. Writing that now seems ridiculous, and maybe reading it does too. If so, I’m happy to hear that! But for some, it may resonate with you. Have you been spreading yourself thin, overcommitting and overcompensating for fear of being rejected for setting boundaries? Thats basically what fear of saying NO equates to. Its about being a people pleaser who fears that if you do what pleases you - or don’t do what doesn’t please you, you may - God forbid - upset someone else! insert shocked face emoji Imagine that? You doing what’s best for you, may upset someone else?!?! You NOT doing what someone else wants you to do may upset them? Can you dare to have someone else be displeased with you? In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I chatted with my dear friend and Professor of Clinical Radiology at LSU Health New Orleans, Dr. Brooke Morell. I learned SOOOOOOO much! Dr. Morell received her Bachelor of Science from Fordham University, NYC, and her Doctor of Medicine from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She completed a Fellowship, Breast Imaging at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. She completed her Residency, Diagnostic Radiology at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA as well as an Internship at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. Because I am not of the recommended age to start receiving annual mammograms, I had no clue what the process was like, nor was I aware of the next steps if there were to be an abnormal findings. Plus we talked about Dr. Morell's journey to becoming one of very few women, let alone women of color, in the field of radiology. She is indeed a woman creating waves and I am so proud to call her a friend of mine.

Hard things are hard, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth doing. Actually, most things that are worth doing, have a hefty price to pay. This may look like invest of time, energy and sometimes even blood sweat and tears. In these moments, we have to ask ourselves how bad to you really want it? Or maybe the more appropriate question is "how badly do you want to change your current reality?" Because if you keep quitting every time things get hard, you're never going to be able to change your reality. You will always be in the same space. Let's talk about it. Press play. Then slay the day...and the week..the month...all the hard things!

Who were you, before you were told who you should be? I’ve seen this quote a few times and its always made me pause and reflect. Last night I watched the Netflix original film Nappily Ever After starring Sanaa Lathan and this quote was basically the theme. So on this Self-Care Sunday I ask you, who were you, before you were told who you should be? Can you even remember? For some of us, its been so long since we have asked this question or given it any thought that we may not know where to begin. I’m discussing it further in the podcast and here are three tips from TinyBuddha:

How do you make time for you when other people rely on you for their basic needs? How do you not feel guilty stepping away and putting you first? How do you find time to remember and rediscover who YOU are, outside of the titles of parent or spouse? We are discussing how to find that balance in today’s Girl Talk edition of the podcast!

The logistics of starting over can often be so daunting that we would rather remain in a familiar misery, than risk an unknown happiness. We can get so bogged down in the details that we even convict ourselves that starting over is impossible, or that we are too old, too late, or have invested too much time, money or energy to walk away from something or someone. We also sometimes think that starting over is considered a setback. I'm here to tell you- don't believe the lies! Its never too late or impossible and starting over is often a setup for something greater than what you walked away from. Each day is an opportunity to rewrite our story. I'm sharing some tips as I myself am starting over for a new life beachside in Miami, Florida!

Raise your hand if you had plans to achieve X, Y and Z by a certain age? And before you could blink your eyes or scratch your head - that age had arrived and you had yet to accomplish X, Y OR Z. If you answered yes, you are officially a member of the club. As a member, you can probably admit to having also shared feelings of failure and disappointment when said goals weren't achieved by the age deadline. Thats what today's conversation is all about as I kick off season 2 of The Loni Swain Show Podcast. I'm joined by two of my girlfriends (Kandice & Amanda, who I've known since elementary school) and we're debunking those timelines, recognizing why they don't really mean s*** and why we are better off that things didn't happen when or how we once thought they should.

As if boundary setting in general wasn't hard enough, try setting boundaries with family members! As an adult, many conversations with friends reveal dysfunctional family dynamics that lack boundaries altogether or very few in place. There are people less qualified than you, out here living the life of your dreams and doing things you want to do, all because they dared to bet on themselves. I'm guilty. We play ourselves too small. Why do we undervalue ourselves and overvalue the opinions and validation of others who claim to be experts on things that we have had our own experiences with. We are often reluctant to recognize that our experiences are valid and valued and our voices matter. In life and relationships we say we want things, but shy away from putting ourselves out there to get them because we are afraid of failure or rejection. Lets talk about it.

Something I have struggled with all of my life and still struggle with is the constant quest for perfection. I impose this standard of perfection upon others, and most adamantly upon myself. Its exhausting and pointless, because ultimately its unobtainable.
I have a tendency of wanting to scrap an entire idea, place or person because they don't live up to the image in my head of what or who they should be. I fall in the box of things to be discarded sometimes too. In the effort to make constant improvements, I am constantly evaluating how myself, others and circumstances could be better and thus, perpetually dissatisfied.
In this podcast, I'm sharing a Japanese art that embraces the beauty in brokenness and imperfection that reminds me to focus on the beauty instead of the broken-in ourselves, others, and in our circumstances.

Self-worth: How many of us have it? Many people say they love themselves and value themselves, but their actions and inactions say the opposite. They speak negatively about themselves to themselves and sometimes aloud, they mistreat their bodies and usually the biggest giveaway is how they allow themselves to be mistreated by others. Culturally we place a lot of value on titles and partnership and if we aren't coupled or outfitted with the title, we don't feel we are worthy. In this episode lets explore who and what we are allowing to determine or damage our "self-worth" other than ourselves.
In episode 37, I shared how I learned to sit with the uncomfortable through my 60-day celibacy and sobriety detox. After that experience, I found it refreshing to discover so many women who have also chosen the path of abstinence in search of greater. Kenyatta Scott is one of them. She is a motivational speaker who works with faith based organizations , where her platform is celibacy as a form of self-care, and discovering one’s purpose.
In this episode we discuss what lead her to choose celibacy, how it has changed her life, what to expect and what tools someone would need to help them along this journey.

It is often said that the first year of marriage is the hardest. In this episode of the podcast, my guests will share keys to not only surviving the first year of marriage-but tips to having a life long union of love and support.

I'm starting a new tradition ya'll! Self-care Sundays! In case you don't know, Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health.
Today's focus is getting our self-talk in check! We are constantly talking to ourselves. That inner monologue is called self-talk. That self-talk has the power to not only affect our mood, but also our confidence and our self-esteem. Its so very important that we focus on creating POSITIVE self-talk that will uplift and encourage us. For me, that has been a challenge. I'm a Virgo and I'm over-analytical and always focusing on what can be better or improved. My default is to find fault, especially in myself. Its tiring, draining, and counter-productive. So I learned a new mantra and I'm challenging myself, and YOU, to employ it this week. It certainly can't hurt anything! It may actually change your life. The young lady who shared it with me said she found it did for her!
Another share is my daily devotional that I start each morning with, A Daily Dose of Sanity. Its 365 stories of inspiration and a daily affirmation mantra that you can carry with you throughout the day to focus on! I LOVE it and each year, the messages mean something different to me. The other book that I referenced in this podcast was The Four Agreements.
I'm also going to start recording voice notes of my daily affirmations and mantras so that I hear them in my own voice and listen to them as reminders throughout the day. I'm committing to this for this week. What are you committing to this week that will help you thrive?
Please subscribe, rate, review and share! Love ya long time!
Preview: On Wednesday's podcast I will be talking with Kenyon & Taccara Martin about Marriage 101: the keys to lasting love and surviving the first year of marriage and beyond!

Today is National HIV Testing Day, which was first observed on June 27, 1995. The 2018 theme is "Doing It My Way, Testing for HIV". The annual event, created to encourage everyone to get tested for HIV, began in 1995 and is organized by the National Association of People with AIDS. Over 1.2 million people over the age of 13 are currently living with an HIV/AIDS infection in U.S. with an additional 50,000 infections being added every year. People between the ages of 13 and 24 account for 25 percent of all new HIV infections and it is said that 1 in 7 of them don’t even know they’re positive. In today's episode, Joey Olsen (HIV Testing Manager at Crescent Care-New Orleans)walks us through the HIV testing process, why undetectable = untransmittable, and what questions you need to ask your healthcare provider.
Crescent Care offers free HIV testing at their 2601 Tulane Ave. location in New Orleans, LA. They offer FREE HIV testing on Wednesdays between 5p-7p and Friday from 1p-3p.
Other New Orleans sites that offer free testing are:

Most of us were taught that we had to go to school, attend college and immediately get a well-paying job in a stable field. In some households, there was even an emphasis on starting a family soon after, which included marriage and kids. Imagine that somewhere along the process of checking off all these boxes, you realize that you are unhappy. Even worse, you ma realize that midway through medical school or your marriage, you never even truly wanted any of these things. Societal and parental pressures are real. As children, our parents imprint upon us their views of what is and is not important in life. Its usually not until we are independent adults that we can even have the space to reflect on our choices and what matters most to us. Then the real work begins of unpacking what isn't ours to get down to who we are and who we truly want to become. This process can be not only really scary, but also really painful. There is a lot of guilt that can come with the fear of disappointing those that we love and love us in return, as well as the fear of straying off the beaten path and making our own way through the unknown.
Kimberly Doley knows this transition very well. After working as a New York trader, she followed in her father's footsteps by entering law school at NYU and found a job at a firm soon after graduation only to discover that she hated everything about the lifestyle that the career demanded of her. After years of burning the candle at both ends and spreading herself thin, she began having medical issues that made he no longer able to ignore the messages that her body was trying to tell her. Learn more about her journey and how she uses her life experience to help others let go of the life they "should" have to find one that is more fulfilling and purpose-filled.

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, (Sunday, May 13) I wanted to dedicate a special podcast to those who may be missing their mother's on this day. I have several close friends who have lost their mother's (recently and not recently) and I was at a loss for how to best support them not only through their grieving process, but also with the upcoming holiday. I'm sure this is a tough time for anyone that's missing Mom at this time, so I enlisted the expertise of licensed psychoanalytic therapist and grief counselor Kristen Machado.
Kristen received her Bachelors of Science in Psychology at Charleston Southern University just outside of Charleston, SC. She then went on she went on to attend graduate school at Wheaton College Graduate School in Wheaton, IL, about 30 miles west of Chicago. In June of 2016, Kristen moved to New Orleans to get a change of scenery and take part in a continuing education program with the New Orleans-Birmingham Psychoanalytic Center. While in New Orleans, she deepened her training of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy through classes, supervision, and taking part in psychoanalysis as a client herself.
Many of Kristen's clients have tried therapy in the past but had no luck in getting the experience they wanted or making the changes they needed. Her unique approach helps people understand why they feel the way they feel, why they do what they do, and how to make changes that lead to happier, more fulfilling lives. Her speciality is in working with clients feeling sadness and/or worry by using a specialized approach called Psychodynamic or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
In this episode, Kristen and I discuss grief VS depression, ways to identify it, how to manage it, how to prepare for Mother's Day will missing your loved one, and ways that family and friends can best support - including things to avoid saying or doing- as well as the differences between psychoanalytic therapy and traditional cognitive behavioral therapy.
We hope that this podcast reaches the ears and hearts of those who need it.

All month we've been talking about relationships; the relationships that we have with ourselves, our romantic partner and our friends. Today we are discussing our first relationship- the child/parent relationship.
Kati Hill is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. Her primary concentrations are Play Therapy, and Parent Coaching. She helps clients with a variety of presenting issues including, depression, anxiety, attention deficit/hyperactive behaviors, social difficulties, adjustment difficulties, behavior difficulties, anger, grief, and divorce. She utilizes Play Therapy with children because Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults. Play therapy builds on the natural way that children learn about themselves and the world around them and helps them to express their feelings more easily through toys instead of words.
Kati shares tips for building and strengthening the bond with your child or, if you're like me and don't yet have kids, you can identify positive ways to connect with the children in your life.

Do you hold on to things (people) for longer than you should? Free yourself and your space and be open to receiving what truly serves you!
On Candace Bushnell’s hit series “Sex in the City”, Carrie Bradshaw said “Some people are settling down, some people are settling, and some people refuse to settle for less than butterflies.” However, can you identify who’s who? Where do you stand? And at what point, or age, do you start considering switching teams?
Why do we do it to ourselves? We have all been guilty at some point or another. Taking on other people's problems as our own. Or going out of our way to try to "help" someone, knowing good and well that we can't fix what they started. But we try anyway. At the expense of our peace of mind, stress, and sometimes even financial strain.
Why you should stop comparing yourself to the people on your timeline and love who and where you are.
If you've been called difficult, embrace it. People perceive boundary setting as being difficult and I explain why.
Have you ever felt like you wanted to be free? Unsure of how to do that? I share my journey in this podcast!
