An electronic composition created using Pure Data, Audacity and numerous VSTs, etc. I have not stuck exactly to the instructions here. I do not fly often but, if I do, I prefer silence at take-off. Oblique Strategies is not something I have ever heard of and was interested to see what it is. Having had a fairly superficial look, I am not sure if I have missed very much. I came across an alphabetical list of quotes and selected a couple of contiguous ones more or less at random: 'Imagine the music as a moving chain or caterpillar' and 'Imagine the music as a set of disconnected events'. In common with others, it seems, I encountered various problems with this website. This is linked to my track from last week, in both of which I intend to create changing rhythmic patterns. I made a couple of tracks similar to this one but was not entirely satisfied with some of the uneven & glitchy sounds, which were not exactly what I was aiming for. Prompted by the mention of Youtube, I looked at a few of my videos of a few years ago, concentrating on soundscapes & musique concrète. For most captions were unavailable but, quite strangely & randomly, one came up with the following word sequence: 'hai hai ya Aku nggak Tahu hai', which turned out to be in Malay &, not counting the repetitions of 'hai', means: 'Hi, I don't know' (according to Google Translate). Strangely again, when I revisited the video the captions had disappeared. Anyway, I recorded this word sequence a few times & after applying numerous repetitions & effects, this track was the result.

Since contributors use a wide variety of methods & equipment, which can be fairly incomprehensible to those using totally different ones, I thought I would keep to something simple that can be performed with any sound editor. Step 1: open a track then duplicate it. Step 2 : add fx of choice to one or both Step 3: swap stereo channels of one Step 4: play both simultaneously & export as one track The track I use here is an unaltered live electronic sequence created in Pure Data together with a heavily modified duplicate.

A remix of a 1934 performance by Walter Gieseking of the Air from Bach's Partita No. 6, available to download at: https://archive.org/details/J.S.BachPartitaNo.6InEMinorBwv830 I chopped it up into numerous fragments of varying length with many consisting of just two or three notes. It was re-assembled on a largely random basis but with longer clips at the beginning & shorter ones toward the end. Finally, I made various adjustments to the sound quality, dynamics etc. & this is the result.

A literal interpretation. Sounds created in Pure Data & edited with Audacity. Disquiet Junto Project 0463: Making the Gradient The Assignment: Make a piece of music inspired by the concept of a gradient.
Step 1: Think about how a gradient functions, as one thing transitions into another.
Step 2: Make a short piece of music that aims to explore the idea of a gradient in sound.
Seven More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:
Step 1: Include “disquiet0463” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.
Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0463” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.
Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.
Step 4: Post your tracks in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:
https://llllllll.co/t/disquiet-junto-project-0463-making-the-gradient/
Step 5: Annotate your tracks with a brief explanation of your approach and process.
Step 6: If posting on social media, please consider using the hashtag #disquietjunto so fellow participants are more likely to locate your communication.
Step 7: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.
Additional Details:
Deadline: This project’s deadline is the end of the day Monday, November 16, 2020, at 11:59pm (that is, just before midnight) wherever you are. It was posted on Thursday, November 12, 2020.
Length: The length is up to you. Transitions can take time.
Title/Tag: When posting your tracks, please include “disquiet0463” in the title of the tracks, and where applicable (on SoundCloud, for example) as a tag.
Upload: When participating in this project, be sure to include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. This description is an essential element of the communicative process inherent in the Disquiet Junto. Photos, video, and lists of equipment are always appreciated.
Download: It is always best to set your track as downloadable and allowing for attributed remixing (i.e., a Creative Commons license permitting non-commercial sharing with attribution, allowing for derivatives).
For context, when posting the track online, please be sure to include this following information:

Electronic composition. A progression from the inhospitable regions to the Goldilocks Zone. Two passages of dissonant polyphonic drones & noise alternate twice before morphing into a section of relative clarity & harmony. All sounds were created in Pure Data as real-time recordings of multi-layered sequences. Subsequently, Audacity was used to select the desired segments & to adjust the dynamics.
