After a military career that culminated in intelligence work at the DIA, but John Falco went from making beer at home to launching one of the most talked about breweries in South Florida. In the process, he's brought new energy to a quiet corner of Miami, making Lincoln's Beard Brewing one of the protagonists in the transformation of an area John's known since childhood.
In this interview, which was recorded at Lincoln's Beard, John talks about his time in military intelligence, the lessons he took from it and how they carried over (or didn't) to the brewing world. We also talk about some of the unique opportunities that come with brewing beers in South Florida, where tropical ingredients are not only readily available, but an integral part of the culture.

Riquet Caballero was born in Cuba, where he says he learned to reject anything that sounded even remotely socialist. He voted for Barack Obama twice before finding a home in the Libertarian Party. Now he's running as the party's candidate for Florida governor.

Even if you don’t personally own any, chances are good that you’ve heard of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin. What are they, how do they work, and where is this whole thing going? Near the end of 2017, I sat down with Gianni D’Alerta, the marketing director at Decentral, which — among other things — is the company behind the cryptocurrency wallet Jaxx. Since we did this interview, the prices of the various cryptocurrencies have failed and risen, prompting media coverage of a supposed crash and fueling speculation that maybe the Bitcoin bubble had burst. Regardless of your opinion on this stuff, I think you’ll find that this conversation with Gianni shows that the cryptocurrency phenomenon is about a lot more than speculation with play money. There’s a lot at play here, from politics to technology to a total revolution in the world’s relationship to its money — and that’s likely true even if none of the cryptocurrencies we discuss here survive in the long term. In this chat, Gianni and I go over some of the basics, but this interview will be less of a cryptocurrency 101 and more of a discussion of the broader implications of the technology. Full disclosure: I’m not an expert, and I even ask some dumb questions. Hopefully, this will serve a starting point for you in exploring this issue and familiarizing yourself with what cryptocurrencies and blockchain are all about.
That Catalonia is culturally distinct from Spain is nothing new. Neither is the idea of Catalonian secession. But the movement has reached a fever pitch, with Spanish economics and a wave of nationalism sweeping through the region to magnify what was already a tense relationship between Catalonia and the rest of Spain.
Humberto is a Cuban-born citizen of the United States who has been living a long time in Catalonia, where he has become involved in activism related to the independence movement. Although he’s been fairly public about it and isn’t secretive about his music, he’s asked that we not use his last name here, as he wants to minimize the possibility that his doing this interview would prompt Spanish authorities to come after him.
When he’s not out on the street at pro-independence demonstrations or running his tourism business, Humberto makes club music. He recently changed his stage name from Hussy Cowboy to Humbe to make pronunciation easier for Spanish audiences.

Major League Cuban explores the history of baseball in Cuba and the game’s significance to Cubans on the island and in exile. Nick Jiménez met with Joe at Little Havana Cigar Factory — in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood — to talk about his film over some stogies and, as you’ll soon hear, some unexpectedly romantic mood music.
