We had three Mayo Football Podcast shows last week and in this review episode Rob Murphy and John Gunnigan review extracts from these pods, focusing on Jason Doherty's inter-county retirement and the start of the club Championships.
Following Jason Doherty's announcement that his days as an inter-county player were over, he sat down for an in-depth interview with Mike Finnerty. We hear a few clips from that pod, focusing on how he decided on the timing for his departure, why the Mayo team he was part of never managed to win the All-Ireland, what it was like to battle back from two cruciate injuries and how he reckons Mayo are fixed as they head into 2024.
The focus then shifts to the club action and we hear snippets from our Championship preview show, which featured Aghamore manager Paddy Finnegan, Balla's Ger Flanagan and Lee Keegan of Westport. This includes Lee's rather forthright opinion on whether or not Fergal Boland should still be involved with Mayo.

Billy Joe muses about the style of play needed in the modern game and he points to evidence of how Mayo attempted to set up in this way in 2023. He also reminisces about what it was like to play alongside the generational talent that was Ciaran McDonald.
Rob's hour-long interview with Kevin McStay was, though, our main podcast highlight this week. The lads review what the Mayo manager had to say on that pod about what kind of year it had been for his team, what the thinking was behind the Conor Loftus experiment and how the defensive structure that was deployed fared out this year and how the aim for greater consistency will be addressed as the team faces into 2024.

As we move on from the 2023 inter-county season for the Mayo men's team, we've switched our focus on the Mayo Football Podcast to other issues.

An exhibition football match is being played in Claremorris this Saturday at 3pm as part of the 'Together For Ger' initiative.
The game will see friends, former team-mates and club-mates of Ger Brady from Claremorris tog out as a Mayo selection takes on a Claremorris selection.
Mike is joined by former Mayo footballer Ger Brady from Ballina and former Claremorris footballer Pauric Ring to chat about Saturday's game and to reflect on why so many people want to come along this weekend to show the 'real' Ger Brady their support.
Ger (44) was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last August.

The club football Championships within the county reached their conclusion last weekend. While most of the focus, understandably, goes to Westport following their breakthrough first ever Moclair Cup success, it was a big weekend too for the footballers of Ballyhaunis, Islandeady and Achill, who captured the Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B titles respectively.
In this episode of the Mayo Football Podcast, host Rob Murphy is joined by Colm Boyle and Stephen Drake to review what was a jam-packed weekend of club action. The lads start with the Senior final, identifying how Westport won it, the lessons they learned from previous outings, their tactics on the day and their impressive defensive strength. The chat then turns to what went wrong for Ballina and why this eagerly anticipated final never really sparked.
Turning to the Intermediate decider, the lads discuss the winning performance provided by Ballyhaunis on Saturday, which enabled them to see off Kilmeena's challenge and ensure their return to the Senior ranks. Islandeady's winning performance against Cill Chomáin in the Junior A final, built on a well developed attacking plan, gets a mention, as does Achill's victory over Moygownagh in the Junior B decider.

It's not just possession of the Moclair Cup that's up for grabs this weekend, as battle is set to be joined for the right to hold the Sweeney and McDonnell Cups as well. The destination of the latter two trophies is what we concentrate on in this episode of the Mayo Football Podcast, as we preview this weekend's Intermediate and Junior title deciders.
Rob Murphy hosts the show and he's joined by podcast regular Edwin McGreal and by Anthony Jordan of Moy Davitts. The lads set the scene for the weekend before focusing in depth on both title deciders. Having come up against both Ballyhaunis and Kilmeena in this year's Intermediate Championship with Moy Davitts, Anthony has some interesting insights into both finalists. The discussion considers the merits of the two contenders for the title and there's a split verdict when it comes to predicting the winners.
The chat then turns to the Junior final between Cill Chomáin and Islandeady. The lads agree that these two clubs are worthy finalists and they note that, like last year's JFC champions Kilmeena, both could well prosper playing at a higher level. Only one of them will get the chance to do so, however, and the lads provide their predictions on which of them they think this will be.

As Ballina Stephenites and Westport count down to this Sunday’s novel Mayo Senior football final, we set the scene in the first of this week’s podcasts. As the dust settles on last weekend’s Mayo Intermediate and Junior club football championship semi-finals, Mike and Ed sit down to look back at the main storylines from the big games.

Mayo's return to the top tier of the National League this spring has proved very successful, with Sunday's win over Kildare confirming their place in the Division One final. It'll be the county's second appearance in the decider in four years and, like 2019, their League final opponents on Sunday at Croke Park will be Kerry, the form team so far this year.

A number of players have worn the Mayo jersey with great distinction over the past decade. The New Year has already seen football action at both inter-county and club levels, with Mayo edged out by Galway in the FBD League in the novel surroundings of the Air Dome at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, while Kilmeena and Knockmore experienced contrasting fortunes in their respective Connacht football finals.

With a long and distinguished playing career at inter-county level - capped by two All-Stars and the Footballer of the Year award in 2017 - Andy Moran was one of Mayo's top performers in an era when the county challenged seriously for national honours year after year. Over the last number of weeks on the Mayo News football podcast, we've kept our focus firmly on the here and now, following the Senior, Intermediate and Junior football Championships as they've played out round by round. With the spoils now settled at county level for the year, however, we have time to widen the lens out and consider longer-term trends that impact on how GAA clubs within the county are faring. Clubs prosper and struggle over time for a variety of different reasons but one of the main factors that has come to the fore this year is the challenge presented by rural depopulation. In this episode of the podcast, we examine this issue in detail. Joining host Rob Murphy and Edwin McGreal of the Mayo News on the show are Kiltane GAA club member Ciaran O'Hara and Professor John Bradley, economist and former research professor at the ESRI who has written extensively on this topic. Defending champions Knockmore and challengers Belmullet face off against each other on Sunday in this year's Mayo Senior Football Championship Final, with Knockmore aiming for their tenth county title while Belmullet are looking to get their hands on the Moclair Cup for the very first time.
In this episode of the Mayo News Football Podcast host Rob Murphy is joined by two distinguished former players of Knockmore and Belmullet respectively, Kevin O'Neill and Billy Joe Padden. Kevin and Billy Joe were, of course, also Mayo teammates and lined out together in the 2006 All-Ireland final.
The lads look back on the journey their respective clubs have been on in recent decades, touching as they do on county finals two and three decades ago involving North Mayo teams. We get their recollections of matches involving Knockmore and Belmullet that they were involved in and hear why both clubs are so strong and passionate about football.
The talk then turns towards Sunday's Moclair Cup decider, with a particular focus on the managers - including those involved in this final - who have come to the fore in the county in recent years. They then look at the match itself and how they think it might go.

Paddy Prendergast, who played at full-back on Mayo's All-Ireland winning teams of 1950 and 1951 died on Saturday at the age of 95. With his passing, the final link to the group of players who took part in the last two All-Ireland finals won by the county has now been severed. In this special episode of the Mayo News football podcast, we pay tribute to the late Paddy Prendergast. Rob Murphy hosts the show and he's joined by Edwin McGreal of the Mayo News who has written extensively about the legendary full-back from Ballintubber and who knows the family history well. he 2021 inter-county football season is set to explode into action this weekend with the start of the Allianz Leagues and, for the first time in a quarter of a century, Mayo won't be involved in the action in Division One. Instead James Horan's men will be operating in Division Two North of the League and in Round 1 they face a tricky assignment against Down this coming Saturday at MacHale Park.

For the past two weeks we've been running 'The Final Countdown' series on the Mayo News football podcast and now, less than 24 hours out from throw-in in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park, the series reaches its conclusion with this final episode. In the lead-in to this Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final between Mayo and Tipperary we've been running 'The Road to Croker' series on the Mayo News football podcast. The playing conditions were tough on a heavy pitch at Pairc Sean MacDiarmada in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday. To coincide with World Mental Health Week, Mindspace Mayo have been working hard to increase people’s awareness about positive mental health. As part of this effort, they've drafted in Mayo footballer Tom Parsons to launch a new pocket-sized information card they produced in association with Mayo GAA. The card — which is full of helpful tips and advice to improve people’s mental health and wellbeing — will be distributed to GAA club members in the county over the coming weeks.

Over the weekend, the Mayo club football season reached its crescendo, with compelling finals played out in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Championships. The Mayo News football podcast was there, as it's been all summer, to catch the action, get the post-match reaction and analyse how the games were won and lost.
In this first episode of two club final editions of the podcast we concentrate on the Intermediate and Junior deciders, which were played out at MacHale Park on Saturday night. It's been another hectic weekend of club championship action, at the conclusion of which we're down to the finalists at Senior, Intermediate and Junior levels. In this latest edition of the Mayo News football podcast, we've got an array of voices talking about all of the weekend's action and more besides. The Ballina native enjoyed a varied sporting career, mainly in rugby where he was capped ten times for Ireland and played for both Connacht and English side Harlequins but also in gaelic football. The gradual reopening of the country in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic moved a step forward on Monday, with an easing of a number of restrictions that were in place since March. As the country starts to get moving again the GAA is also in the midst of planning its return to play, with the focus initially on club action followed later in the autumn by a resumption of inter-county activity.

This week sees the culmination of the Top 100 Club Footballers series in the Mayo News. Over the past few weeks the top 20 Junior footballers and the top 30 Intermediate players have been unveiled, along with the first tranche of Senior players to make the cut. With the May Day Bank Holiday now behind us, we should all be gearing up for the start of another summer of Championship action. The Covid-19 pandemic remains a central feature in all of our lives right now, pushing so many other things - sport included - to the margins.
