Hi again and welcome to my bi-weekly ramble. Today I’m talking about some of my recent travels, recapping my high school reunion, and starting to work with a personal trainer. Motivation is high right now because it has literally been 5 days. At the same time, the shorter days are starting to get to me–I’m taking extra care of my health and I encourage anyone listening to do the same!

I decided that if I want to transform my life, first I had to transform my health. Lucky for me known friend of the pod, Beverley Cheng, started her 30 day Body Mind Reset challenge a few days ago–it was the exact kick in the ass I needed to refocus on my health. I’m talking about my thoughts and expectations going into the challenge, rebranding minus the dramatic haircut, and turning ClassPass into a dating app.

This week we sat down with Ali’s friend Monica Mulhall to talk about supporting local fitness studios. Monica fell in love with movement through Shakti Barre, a uniquely encouraging barre and yoga class that inspires you to show up, feel seen and supported, and truly be yourself (04:24). Unfortunately the studio shut down due to the pandemic (BUT you can still find them on the SHAKTIBARRE app!), and when that happened Monica took the foundations of fitness she learned in class and used them to guide her running workouts (13:44). Since she’s the real-life Carrie Bradshaw, Monica also shared some fun dating stories with us (31:30). We couldn’t help but wonder, which is more challenging...Shakti Barre or getting him to pay for a drink at the bar? Follow Monica on Instagram @msmonicamulhall (https://bit.ly/3ru5JjR). This week we’re welcoming back two of our favorite Texans, Jillian Roberts and Meghan Hale, for another Unfit Update! Go back and listen to each of their episodes if you haven’t already–Jillian’s was published in July 2020 and Meghan’s in September 2020. We talk about what they’ve been up to in the last year and if they’ve experienced any mental shifts during that time (9:52). One of many reasons we love these ladies is the way they continue to choose happiness no matter what life throws at them (17:06). Jillian is currently working on the U by Kotex team at Kimberly-Clark and later we shift gears to talk about period stigma (42:33). Jill and Sam relive some embarrassing moments you don’t want to miss. Let’s just say…they were good for the plot. Remember, if it’s not a good time, it’s a good story. It’s crazy to think of this story happening in not only an alternate universe, but also an alternate 2020. Alex and Henry get it on in various locations, falling deeper and deeper in love. All the while they exchange romantic and salacious emails (ummmm hot!!). We give our predictions for how they may ultimately be caught in their romance. As a high school student, Syd fell into fitness as a social activity with her sister (16:31). At the start of 2018 she launched @sydprogress–and things have grown exponentially since then. What we love about Syd is her realistic approach to fitness. It’s okay and common to have aesthetic fitness goals, but it’s also okay to learn, grow, and change them over time. In her transformation posts, Syd often points out how much her mindset has changed from one picture to the next (33:42), and she works hard to integrate this mental shift in her coaching. Syd explains the meaning behind the butterfly symbol she has tattooed on her arm and printed on her merch (46:52), then we plan our post-pandemic trip to visit her in Vancouver. We sat down with Kim Vopni, a certified personal trainer and pelvic floor coach (11:21), to chat all about pelvic health. Kim debunks some misconceptions about what can happen to your pelvic floor as you get older, and she makes a strong argument for seeing a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic health at least once a year, like you would go to a routine dentist appointment (18:08). As you can probably guess based on this episode’s title, there is more to pelvic health than simply “doing kegels.” And the truth is, there’s a good chance you’re doing kegels incorrectly! We definitely were. Kim delivers some cues and a couple different visual examples to help us make sure we’re doing kegels the right way (34:50). This week we caught up with Brandon Schneider and Ian Stone, two of our friends whom we recorded with in 2020. Scroll back through our feed to listen to each of their episodes. After we recorded with Brandon in July, he started experiencing some stomach pain and gastrointestinal issues (13:20). He set out to make a few major dietary changes while building a team of doctors who could help him solve the problem, rather than just treat his symptoms (17:54). This proved to be no easy task. Since recording with Ian, he went back and listened to his episode, identifying some behaviors and mindsets he wants to change in the future (36:42). In 2020, we rebranded ‘exercise’ to be ‘movement,’ as of this episode, we are rebranding ‘goals’ as ‘intentions’ (1:03:26). This week we sat down with Chris Murch, a friend of ours pursuing music under the stage name Nigel Roxbury. Chris shares how he got into rap music and got over the fear of putting himself out there (17:10). This year was tough for all of us, and Chris explains how the pandemic and being quarantined pushed him mentally and creatively (28:17). You know you’re doing something you love if you can fall in love with the process instead of the results. Rap has been that process for Chris, and the work he’s put into his music has not only enriched his day-to-day life, but has also led to more fulfilling work opportunities (37:32). According to the Psychology of Wellbeing class Ali is taking (it’s a Yale class & you can enroll on Coursera: https://bit.ly/3qNfCZ8), studies show that having more time makes you happier than having more money (44:25). Trigger Warning: Eating disorders and eating disorder recovery (44:42 - 48:26). We are back with our most informative episode yet! This week we sat down with Caitie Corradino, a Registered Dietitian, yoga teacher, certified personal trainer and podcaster (5:28)! Through her company, Full Soul Nutrition, Caitie offers holistic nutrition coaching and eating disorder recovery counseling. Starting with the basics, Caitie explains the key differences between a dietitian and a nutritionist (6:36). After years of study, Full Soul Nutrition was born (12:45) with the goal of bringing elements of spirituality, mindfulness and movement into Caitie’s nutrition counseling (25:52). Sounds great, right?! We were shocked to hear that sometimes this idea to merge the two is met with resistance. After having survived an eating disorder herself, Caitie speaks to some of the misconceptions about them (39:29) and why trigger warnings in content are important (48:51). You’re definitely going to want to take out your pen and notebook for this one. Unfit Fam game: Take a shot (of water) every time you hear the word ‘movement.’ Let’s get hydrated!!! It’s almost Thanksgiving and you know what that means: food, family and football (go Bills!). This week we welcome Indoor Football League wide receiver JJ Brania-Hopp. JJ and Sam go all the way back to their middle school musical (10:17). JJ walks us through his journey going to school in Brooklyn, Maine, and ultimately playing football at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas (11:51). After years of hard work and literal sweat, he’s been signed to the Arizona Rattlers of the IFL (21:48), with dreams of going to the NFL (33:23). JJ shares his strategy to stay motivated and why he created a vision board years ago (36:18). Turns out he’s a big affirmations guy, and we would argue those affirmations are working. This week we talk to multi-hyphenate superstar Maria Scherer about the future of fitness (12:19). Maria is a performer and group fitness instructor who’s coached pilates, dance cardio, Orangetheory, and HIIT. Sam and Maria met in college through BODYMPUMP, a Les Mills strength training class (15:49). After booking a role in a production of Mamma Mia (22:20), the pandemic quickly shut down Broadway and Maria found herself home in Pennsylvania, searching for creative ways to satisfy her craving for group fitness (36:47). Now back in NYC she teaches classes at Prehab, a fitness company dedicated to creating routines for athletes to “prehab” so they don’t need rehab. We geek out over musical theater and dance, then explain how important it is for group fitness instructors to share their personality and create a welcoming environment for class participants (51:09). Digital workout classes are already ushering in a new age of virtual fitness (53:44), and Maria shares where she thinks the industry is headed. Zoom and Obé and Peloton, oh my! Tune in for some laughs, inspiration, and motivation to move! Follow Maria’s IG here (https://bit.ly/2JW4zMo) and click here to sign up for one of her classes (https://bit.ly/3pnMlUn).

We don’t...well we try, but inconsistently. Take a break with Unfit today to learn about LADY (11:10), a donation-based zine for the female identifying entrepreneur. LADY was created by Seattle-based designer and friend of the pod, Stephanie Pieper. She is the genius behind our gorgeous logo! We talk to Stephanie about her journey bringing a community of female entrepreneurs together (14:04), then jump into LADY Volume 2: Feminism in Food (31:28). Ali reads an excerpt from one of the essays included in the zine (36:09) and we discuss the way diet culture trains us to want to look a certain way, fostering complicated relationships with food for many women in the process. We want to challenge the Unfit Fam to think about the reason why they want to make changes to their body. More often than not, it’s our relationship with food that needs changing. We’re wrapping up our discussion of Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid with our good friend Dana–who started the book after us, but finished it before we did. We reflect on the story’s ending (13:58), continue to fangirl over Reid’s masterful writing (18:23), and talk about what we learned about the internal monologues of people of color (37:06). Ten out of ten would recommend.

We are so excited to share our conversation with 18-time NCAA Champion, three-time USA Olympian, four-time Olympic Silver Medalist, (and now friend of the pod) Kara Lynn Joyce (9:50). Kara takes us back to when she first got her start in the sport (17:23), her impressive collegiate swimming career, and what it was like to compete at the Olympics...THREE TIMES. Training to qualify for her third Olympics looked very different from the first two—she moved to Colorado to train with another swimmer who was on her way to global stardom, Missy Franklin (25:18). Their training and friendship is captured in the documentary, Touch the Wall. After two decades of competing at an elite level, Kara had to transition to normal life, and struggled figuring out what she wanted to do (33:48). She began working with young female swimmers and soon discovered the coaching she was able to provide them outside the pool was more transformative than her actual swimming instruction. That’s when she created the LEAD Sports Summit; an annual, all-inclusive event connecting female athletes with Olympic champions and experts in sport and mental health. In May 2020, Kara and her team launched a project two years in the making: the LEAD Sports Academy, a suite of online courses for building skills in confidence, leadership, mental health, nutrition and more (40:34). We chat about the importance of providing teenage athletes the resources to help them through their adolescence, and how the moments in between competitions and training often have the most impact (45:45). Check out the brand new LEAD Sports Company website (https://www.leadsportsco.com/) and stick around through the end of the episode for some piping hot Olympic tea. This week we’ve partnered with The Budl Shop, a Los Angeles based handmade jewelry company, to share their story (11:33). When the pandemic hit in March, Taylor and Marina lost their jobs at a boutique event agency. While experiencing mental health struggles, they quickly became accountability partners. Eventually, Marina saw an opportunity to do something that had been on her mind for a long time: create handmade jewelry (20:38). After sharing the idea with Taylor, The Budl Shop was born! We’re talking about how they created a business while living on opposite coasts, their debut collection (25:05), and zero waste packaging—you read that right (30:33). For Marina, making jewelry is a form of therapy. Mental health and mindfulness are at the core of The Budl Shop’s brand and story (38:28). A few months ago we told the Unfit Fam that we want to hear and share your stories. Meg and Jake messaged us about their experiences losing weight, so we brought them together for this week’s episode. After deciding they wanted to transform their bodies, each made lifestyle changes that resulted in their weight loss over time, like joining Weight Watchers to learn about nutrition (6:28), being more consistent at the gym, and drinking less alcohol (14:45). For both of them, losing weight was more about gaining mental clarity and having more energy to focus on their goals. Sam reveals her mixed feelings about progress photos (17:33) and why walking is vastly underrated (29:42). Meg and Jake share how they stay consistent and hold themselves accountable (35:28). Today we’re talking to our friend Ian Stone about a topic that is often lost on the nearly $100 billion dollar fitness industry: body dysmorphia. Mayo Clinic defines body dysmorphia (or body dysmorphic disorder) as “a mental health disorder in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance–a flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. But you may feel so embarrassed, ashamed and anxious that you may avoid many social situations.” Ian came to us wanting to discuss the male perspective on this. Body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder prevalent in all genders, and many people are good at keeping it under wraps. This week Ian shares his story, beginning with when he first started to think more about the way his body looks (4:50). We talk about tearing ourselves apart back in middle school (6:41), feeling guilty for not keeping up with the standards we set for ourselves (15:09), cheat days (28:04) and Ian’s current relationship with fitness and food (31:47). Why do we praise people for hustling, but never for taking a break when they need it? This thought came up a few days ago in a conversation Ali had with our friend and now yours, Meghan Hale. Megan is currently pursuing a degree in Health and Wellness and a certificate in Integrative Functional Nutrition. Before deciding to study nutrition, Meghan spent years trying to “fit a square peg into a round hole.” She came to realize that life is not about finding the one thing you’re meant to do. You can be happy just being you. We’re talking about why we don’t need to create a set of rules for ourselves to measure our productivity, fitness or nutrition (12:53), flipping the script on hustle culture to praise our friends for actually taking a break (21:51), and being our own biggest fans (24:19). We are all so proud of how different we are, so why do we look for a single solution to achieve optimal health? We discuss the series’ fourth episode, which is all about fasting (13:20), including what we think about it as a healing practice, if we would try intermittent fasting (21:23) and the most controversial part of the show, one woman’s 28 day water fast (26:16). Sam and Ali have very different styles of eating, and different opinions on fasting. They discuss intuitive eating (22:55) and Ali shares her number one health tip (32:22).

Jillian shares that journaling is her number one strategy for connecting with her emotions (25:05). Like many other healthy practices, prioritizing your well-being starts with finding the time daily or weekly to do something that makes you feel good (35:49). Like rewatching Hamilton at 1:00AM and falling in love all over again with Anthony Ramos...that would be enough.
Of course we plan on marrying rich. But before that happens, we plan on getting rich ourselves. In May 2019, Ciara created Fit for a Queen, a community built for women in pursuit of health and happiness (22:00). Today we’re talking about movement as medicine, meal prep, and defined triceps. Sam’s wannabe husband Matthew Hussey says it best: confidence is a muscle, not a light switch. The pow was fresh, the pickles came in barrels, and the Shred of Shame was born...almost.
Racism is a public health issue and more importantly, a human rights issue. You guys already know we’re not experts on anything we discuss, and we’re not Black. However, to opt out of the conversation is inherently racist. Black Lives Matter. Contrary to popular belief, macros are not the Pythagorean Theorem of nutrition. This week we’re diving into macronutrients, aka carbohydrates, protein and fats, and using a little bit of “jock math” to test out macro-tracking strategies. It’s looking to be a lot more involved than simply having MyFitnessPal on your phone.
Life often throws curveballs. For most of us currently, that curveball is the pandemic we are in the midst of. For sports anchor Jenna Harner, it was moving to a new city for a new job in the middle of said pandemic—which is, objectively speaking, A LOT to handle. This week, we’re talking to Jenna (13:32) about managing stress, establishing a routine, and attempting to date during all of this... Of course, we’d all prefer to be dating Jeff Skinner.
It’s safe to say living in uncertain times has us all feeling restless and a little helpless. One easy way to make a positive difference: donating blood! We didn’t exactly plan to launch a health podcast during a global health crisis—but when the creative juices get flowing, we stop at nothing. Join us for our inaugural episode! We’re talking about staying fit (or trying to) while in quarantine. Routine is key, but there’s also pizza which poses certain issues…
