Episode #42 - Amygdala Hijack 2023

Cultivating Wisdom, The MBL Program

We don’t know what we don’t know. Intelligence without wisdom is often quite destructive. Knowledge is not wisdom. The first step in cultivating wisdom is acknowledging the magnitude of what we do not know. The next step is to move out of our “thinking mind,” with its chronic judgments and interpretations, and step into the present moment by learning and practicing the habits needed to lower our walls.

It is there that we connect with a much deeper level of awareness and intelligence. This process has proven to create inspirational leadership, emotional intelligence, higher consciousness, and freedom from our ego-based fears. The resulting creativity, trust, and engagement enables career, personal, and corporate success. We are developing the openness of a child but this time with the wisdom of a master. A growing number of us are making the essential transition from believing to knowing.

Feature length episode where Phil Johnson and Arthur Geringas discuss navigating the anxious moments that happen when amygdala hijacks sieze our lives and how they affect our personal and business relationships.

Episode #39: Covid19 - The Learning Experience

We all want to have power and agency over our lives. Most people know what they would like to change. The reason they do not make those changes is because they feel that whatever they are doing now is protecting them. It is their way of coping even if they are miserable within the perceived safety it provides. They would rather stay in a familiar place even if that place has become increasingly unpleasant.

Individual change is hard and organizational change is even harder. Especially when it involves changes or disruption to the patterns that we have grown accustom. Reconnecting with our authentic selves while developing our emotional intelligence is the key. It raises our level of consciousness. It is important to understand that no one produce results that are beyond their current level of consciousness.

MBL Minute: The Beginner's Mind And I Am

Episode Notes

The Beginner's Mind

Sometimes our thinking mind and what we believe to know to be true prevents us from seeing things as they really are. A beginner’s mind is present, focused and lacking any judgment. It is to be curious about everything. Having a beginners mind helps us to learn and grow. It enables us to get past old, pre-conceived ideas of people and situations. It strengthens our belief in our self. It help us to be honest with our self and others.

I Am

I am not what I am going to do or what I have already done. I am a unique vibrational energy that is conscious, connected, timeless and eternal. IAM. I just am. Diminishing our ego enables our humanity to shine through. Our physical body is ruled by our largely unconscious egos. Ego is focused on labels, beliefs, accumulating possessions, roles and thoughts. It wants something to be different than it is and is focused on past or future, never on the reality of the present moment.

MBL Minute: Kawhi Leonard's Leadership And Higher Consciousness

Episode Notes

Kawhi Leonard’s Leadership

Kawhi Leonard is considered by many to be one of the greatest NBA players to ever play the game yet it is who he is as a person that is most impressive. He is not the “quiet assassin” some sports commentators have suggested. On the contrary, he is an authentic leader, able to see what others cannot because they have been blinded by their walls. The emotional labor he practices has enabled him to lower his walls by becoming less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome in both on and off the court situations.

Higher Consciousness

The person most present is most influential. We can develop greater presence by learning to become less resistant, judgmental and attached to outcome. We would be surprised to realize how little time we spend being actually present. A higher consciousness reduces the mindless and habitual fight, flight or freeze response to the anxiety that change and innovation creates. This enables us to stay more aware and focused on the reality of the present moment.

Episode #36: Signature Strengths

Money was invented to reflect the value of the relationships and exchanges we have with each other. There is no inherent value in a piece of paper or a shiny stone. Their only value is the collective fictional one we agree to give them.

The ability of individuals and organizations to create value and carry out transactions across borders is accelerating. Money has become more than a static unit of value. The way we buy, sell and pay for things is changing. The transactional friction inherent in banks, currency exchanges and other financial institutions will be eliminated in this emerging global economy.

The authenticity and emotional intelligence we and our company demonstrate in the service of others will determine the value of our relationships and exchanges. Whether reflected in paper, digital or programmable currencies this is our true source of wealth.

An update from the Master of Business Leadership Podcast

Hello again,

This is Arthur Geringas - Executive Producer for the MBL Podcast.

When we launched the The Master of Business Leadership Podcast in January of 2018 we weren’t really sure what to expect. What happened was a growth far beyond anything we could have imagined. We’ve ended up with listeners in almost 130 countries - around the world.. every corner of the globe has been reached and we've also had the pleasure of speaking to several dozen inspiring guests along the way. It's all part of this passion project we are sharing with you .. our listeners .. wherein we hope to be a part of your Authentic Leadership Journey. Along the way we developed MBL Minutes which are short infusions of narratives, reflections to previous podcasts and highlights of our game changer interviews. We even dabbled a little with the release of our first inspiring white board video “Change can really drive us bananas”. In this past year and a half we have had some amazing opportunities to connect on a personal basis with some really inspiring people, both on the podcast and with our listenership, and for that we are extremely grateful.

We need to take a short programming break to bring The MBL podcast into its next phase. Over the course of the next month will be developing even more content that we will be excited to share with you. Follow up stories with some of our game changers, video blogs, whiteboard and some round tables with multiple guests all discussing the subjects that you’ve tuned in for, emotional intelligence and authentic leadership. It won’t be all quiet - there will still be regular Q and A moments which look back at some conversations from previous podcasts.

We’re already counting down the days till our next feature length episode which will air on June 17th 2019 and are excited to have you come along for the ride. We want to give you all a heart felt thank you for being on this ride with us. If you haven’t yet, it would help us out if you take a moment to like share and subscribe to the podcast so that we can be in touch. We love hearing from you.. so please don’t stop sending the emails and messages on linked in. See you all very very soon. Until then... We’re gonna roll up our sleeves ... and Get to it.

MBL Minute: A New Earth And An Energy Physics Thesis

Episode Notes

A New Earth

In the 200,000 years of humanity’s relatively brief history we have created a cascade of effects that is permanently changing the planet by causing mass extinctions of plant and animal species, polluting the oceans and altered the atmosphere, among other lasting impacts. Our numbers have swelled to over 7 billion and we are using the earth’s resources at an ever increasing rate.

Energy Physics Thesis

Thesis: The unconscious habit we have of giving away our energy and the subsequent need to steal the energy of others underlies all drama, chaos and conflict everywhere.

The unconscious habit we have of giving away our energy is what creates our need to steal the energy of others. This simple reality is the root cause challenge that underlies all drama, chaos and conflict. It creates the need to surround ourselves with others that exhibit the same behavior. These groups need each other but they do not like each other; they do not trust each other and they would never truly lower their walls around each other.

MBL Minute: Better Clients And Power And Agency

Episode Notes

Better Clients

When you do the emotional labor of developing your authenticity and emotional intelligence you will attract better clients. Sometime you must be willing to do the emotional labor of telling your clients an uncomfortable truth that will help them get better results. If they are unable or unwilling to embrace the truth of then move on to those that will. What you do is not for everyone. It is for those clients that are ready for the better results you provide.

Power and Agency

We all have a primal need to feel safe. Most people know what they would like to change. The reason they do not make those changes is because they feel that whatever they are doing now is protecting them. It is their way of coping even if they are miserable in the perceived safety it provides. People would rather stay in a familiar place even if that place is unpleasant.

Episode #35: The Magic Of Star Wars And Emotional Intelligence

Why is our emotional type of intelligence the motivator for better results? The answer is that it is our emotions, not our intellectual intelligence that motivates us to take action. Emotions are what turn our thoughts into the actions that create our results. They drive the experiential process that creates new habits, behaviors and beliefs. It is for this reason the primary focus of our education and training needs to concentrate on the development of emotional intelligence.

The lack of emotional intelligence is the root cause of the drama, chaos and conflict we experience. The emotional labor that leads to the development of emotional intelligence needs to become part of the essential skills education and training schools and companies offer their students and employees. It is the crucial education needed to embrace the unimaginable opportunities and challenges that lies before us. With the accelerating rate of global change the growing demand for emotional intelligence is becoming apparent.

We need to train and educate our emotions. This new type of intelligence education reflects the future direction of organizational and cultural development. Virtually all of the top business schools profess to teach leadership, yet their efforts are widely viewed as falling short. Business as usual will not produce the emotional self-aware needed to tackle global challenges and opportunities before us. The emotional labor that leads to emotional intelligence has become part of the essential skills education and training companies need to make available to their employees.

MBL Minute: Investments In Human Capital And Books

Episode Notes

Investments in Human Capital

Our human biology and the societal institutions we have created are not equipped to handle the time in which we live. The rate of technological and social changes we now face would be incomprehensible to previous generations. We are at a tipping point in our history. These changes are happening so fast, and are so profound, that every aspect of our society is being transformed, from our bodies and families to our businesses, governments and economies.

Books

The following is a quote from The Art of Living, by Epictetus. He was aGreek Stoic philosopher, born 50AD and died at the age of 85 in 135AD.

“Don’t just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are training weights of the mind. They are very helpful but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.”

MBL Minute: Signs And Metaphors And Becoming Who You Are

Episode Notes

Signs and Metaphors

Everyone wants to get to Heaven but nobody wants to die. Similarly, everyone wants better results but nobody wants to do the emotional labor of changing their current habits and behaviors. Simply having the desire for better results is not enough. It takes dedicated daily practice that relies upon a proven teaching and coaching methodology.

Becoming Who You Are

Your constant position in life is that you are at a fork in the road. You can choose actions that are a reflection of your authentic self or you can choose to behave in a way that is untrue for you. You can begin recall your personal greatness by starting the process of chipping away everything that is not truly you. The fears you have picked up. The limiting beliefs you have accumulated. The false assumptions that separate you from your authentic self.

Episode #34: Deep Dive

The Master of Business Leadership program has been described as a very elegant teaching and coaching system that works. The MBL program’s unique methodology examines and helps us to understand the root cause problems underlying the challenges executives and their organizations are facing in today’s rapidly changing environment. It then provides a proven solution focusing on the development of authentic, emotionally intelligent individuals and leadership cultures. This powerful curriculum is capable of solving increasingly challenging problems while producing increasingly better results.

We need to shed the walls of resistance, judgment and attachment to outcome that have been built up over time which separates us from our authentic selves. The program begins with an examination of why change is so difficult. An emotional connection to our desired results is then created. This provides the motivation that is essential to the development of new habits and behaviors. MBL habit stacking and micro skills provide the tools and insights needed to obtain our desired results.

This leads into a discussion about why coaching matters. There is a fundamental difference between being a coach and being a manager. A manager provides direction to the team members whereas a coach serves is a guide enabling the individuals to move through the challenges they experience on the way of achieving their desired results.

Dedicated daily practice is necessary to turn thoughts into actions and results. The gradual process of becoming less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome is the key to mastery.

A company is a team of individuals that need coaching to achieve their objectives. Coaching that develops authenticity and emotional intelligence is able to reduce the drama, chaos and conflict that change and innovation invariably creates within individuals and organizations.

A coach is able to sort out the challenges that occur as a natural result of our biological and sociological resistance to change. For example, using the habits and micro skills of authentic listening and communications enables team members to lower their walls. This creates a safer, more engaged environment for individuals to take risks on the way to achieving better results.

Coaching focuses on continual improvement on the journey toward the Vision of the desired result while being mindfully present in each moment. This is how authentic emotionally intelligent leaders and organizational cultures are developed. Everyone needs a coach.

The gradual mastery of our authentic emotionally intelligent leadership inspires trust and higher levels of engagement. The MBL program is an experiential process focused on taking correct action and the results those actions produce. Organizational change begins with individual change. Over the past two decades the Master of Business Leadership process has provided a proven methodology to achieve both of these outcomes. An overview of the MBL program is provided below.

Our special guest today is Anthony Graffeo, PhD. Anthony has had a 40 year passion for helping science and engineering managers master the fundamentals of leadership. Anthony is currently teaching two graduate leadership courses at Northeastern University. https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonygraffeo)

MBL Minute: Workplace Benefits of EQ And Good Monday Mornings

Episode Notes

Workplace Benefits of Emotional Intelligence

A company is simply a group of individuals that have decided to come together to offer a product or service to the marketplace. It needs to attract and develop great people in order to build a successful business.

Good Monday Morning

The average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work during the course of their lifetime. That is about half of the time we are awake for 50 years. It is said that three quarters of Americans, that’s over 250 million people, report severe anxiety on Sunday because of their dread of Monday morning. Sunday nights are often ruined by the thoughts and feelings associated with Monday morning.

Episode #32: Body Language

A large part of our brain’s initial wiring as a child was the result of some very specialized brain cells brain researchers discovered in the mid 1990s called mirror neurons. These specialized brain cells were triggered from an early age by observing the energy and body language of those around us. This enabled us to sense what their emotions. Our ability to catch the feelings or moods of others has evolved in order for us to survive and thrive within our social groups.

We tend to take on the behaviors and body language of the people with whom we spend the most time. Our mirror neurons resonate with the energy of the person having the experience just as if we were the ones having that experience. These 'spidey senses' refer to our ability to sense imminent reward or danger.

If a leader’s actions and body language reflect their authenticity and emotional intelligence the organization will be much more willing to embrace innovation and change. If they do not the opposite will occur. Whether positive or negative, emotions can spread like an energy virus throughout an organization.

The body language and emotions of the individuals we choose to surround ourselves with can have a huge impact on our results. The process whereby the behavior of an individual or group of individuals gradually begins to spill over and affect the behavior of the group as a whole is called emotional contagion. In order to create an environment where innovation and change are encouraged we need to be developing our authenticity and emotional intelligence.

The Master of Business Leadership program provides the teaching, coaching and habits to achieve mastery which enables the artist in us to emerge.

MBL Minute: The Enemy Of Creativity And Crazy Today Obvious Tomorrow

Episode Notes

The Enemy of Creativity

The enemy of creativity is resistance. Are you a writer that doesn’t write; a painter that doesn’t paint; a teacher that doesn’t teach or a coach that doesn’t coach? Late at night, have you ever experienced a Vision of the person you were meant to be?

Crazy Today Obvious Tomorrow

Every revolutionary idea starts out as seemingly crazy at the time. It is not obvious or readily understood by the majority of people. Sometimes, the new fringe idea begins to resonate with a small group of believers that see what others are yet to acknowledge. What seems crazy today will become obvious tomorrow.

MBL Minute: The Great Battle And The Act Of Deciding

Episode Notes

The Great Battle

We all have a sense that there is a great battle coming but most of us are not yet ready to change our current course. There is a mistaken idea that when we get woken up all the pain and suffering will be away. The knowledge of what to do is not the solution, it is just the beginning. The anxiety and emotional labor that will be required to change our trajectory is the road to the solution.

The Act of Deciding

The word decision derives from the Latin to decide. It means to cut yourself off from any other possibility. This is the fundamental first step in creating change. You must decide. If you have not yet decided to change any efforts to improve your results will be unsuccessful.

MBL Minute: Patience And One Million Dollars

Episode Notes

Patience

Having patience while setting challenging goals is the key to better results. There is no guarantee we will achieve them but we are willing to endure the fear and discomfort of moving through the process. Connecting with a harmonious passion to achieve a desired result that resonates with us becomes our motivation.

One Million Dollars

The true cost of education for many college graduates is over one million dollars. This is often the cost by the time they have been able to pay back their student loans and the interest incurred in obtaining that education. You have to ask yourself if the return on your investment was worth the required cost and effort. Has your career advancement met your expectations? What should you be doing now to ensure your future employability?

Episode #32: The Artist's Journey

The artist’s journey answers the two fundamental questions of our existence. Who am I and why am I here. The artist’s journey begins once mastery of a skill or behavior has been achieved. During the process of becoming a master our level of awareness and competence reaches a point where our actions and responses become largely instinctual. We know what to do and we do what we know without a great deal of conscious thought.

Anyone can become an artist by tapping into their passion and purpose. We do this by learning to peel away the layers of resistance, judgment and attachment to outcome that separate us from our authentic selves. Once we have reconnected with our purpose the artist in us seeks to perfect the expression of that purpose and share it with others as their ultimate expression and gift of love and service.

The artist genius within us seeks to live on purpose. There is an ongoing gravitational pull or call to action going on within us to live as our authentic selves. In a sense, the hero’s journey is the process we go through to achieve mastery. This reflects the first half of our life’s journey. The artist’s journey is the second half and may appear boring by comparison because there are fewer twists and turns.

The artist’s emerging character and passion is really the authentic self coming to the surface. They come full circle and begin to know that person for the first time. The “overnight success” of moving from mastery to artistry never happens overnight. By enabling your artistic light to shine you inspire others to do the same. As you are liberated from your own fear, your authentic leadership automatically liberates others.

The Master of Business Leadership program provides the teaching, coaching and habits to achieve mastery which enables the artist in us to emerge.

Our special guest today is Doug Leitch. Doug is Managing Partner at Tandem Thinkers Inc. His authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership is inspiring regional, national and global clients. (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dougleitch)

MBL Minute: Amateur Or Professional And Emotions, Thoughts And Actions

Episode Notes

Amateur or Professional

Overcoming our resistance to change is far more important than any gift or talent we may possess. We need to manage our emotions in order to lead and inspire others to want to follow our example. Our ability to overcome resistance, self-sabotage, and self-doubt is way more important than talent. There are lots and lots of people that have talent but only a few of them are willing to turn that talent into positive actions and results.

Emotions, Thoughts and Actions

Emotions are the catalysts that turn thoughts into actions and results. Intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence are meant to work together. We need both but intellectual intelligence is largely dependent on genetics whereas emotional intelligence is developed through their actions. There is no limit to how emotionally intelligent we can become. Emotional intelligence has become a key consideration for personal and career success.

MBL Minute: C - Suite And Smart People Or Crazy People

Episode Notes

C-Suite

Success as a C-Suite executive is becoming more challenging without a high level of emotional intelligence. Most executives underestimate its value and importance. There has been a high selection pressure for IQ within corporations with relatively little variation at the executive level. Conversely there has been little or no awareness or selection pressure when it comes to emotional intelligence. As a result there is a much wider range of variation in authenticity and emotional intelligence among executives within organizations.

Smart People or Crazy People

Smart people often sound like crazy people to those that are being blinded by the way things are instead of the way they are going to be. You can follow the herd or you can lead it but you cannot do both. The greater fool is the individual with the courage and naiveté to believe they can succeed where others have failed. The greater fool is actually an economic term. For the rest of us to profit, we need a greater fool. Someone who will buy long and sell short. Most people spend their life trying not to be the greater fool. The greater fool is someone with the perfect blend of self-delusion and ego to think that he can succeed where others have failed.

Episode Notes

By curating the growth of those assets through the development of their authenticity and emotional intelligence they can more positevly serve their clients and customers which can then lead to a higher service fee for the organization to charge.

MBL Minute: Strategic Action And The Politics Of Fear And Anger

Episode Notes

Strategic Action

We need to recognize the difference between actions we are taking and the results we are creating. Our actions need to “move the needle” toward the Vision of our desired results. We need to shift the focus from how much we do to the impact of those actions. Most of us work too hard on activities that are urgent but not strategically important to our personal success or the success of the organization. By focusing more on activities that are less urgent but move us in the direction of our Vision we ultimately achieve better results that require less effort and we have more fun along the way.

The Politics of Fear and Anger

A government or a system of justice can pass laws and they can enforce those laws but they cannot legislate what is in an individual’s mind. Time will not change this reality. We need to be doing the emotional labor required to change our minds if we want to achieve better results that are sustainable.

MBL Minute: Knowing And Learning And Brain And Mind

Episode Notes

Knowing and Learning

It would be a mistake to believe that if you know something you have learned that thing. These are two separate and distinct processes. The act of knowing requires intellectual labor whereas the act of learning takes emotional labor. Learning comes from the actions we take based upon what we know.

Brain and Mind

We have the power inside our self, in every minute of every day, to use our mind to change our brain to change our mind for the better. Neurons that fire together wire together. We can build unshakeable inner strength by putting emotional intelligence into our backpack of skills and abilities.

We can hard wire the capabilities of emotional intelligence into our brain by practicing the emotional labor of taking actions that are non-resistive, non-judgmental and non-attached to outcome. This is more challenging that it may seem because brain neuroscience researchers have discovered our brain has a negativity bias.

MBL Minute: Someday And The Joy Of Discomfort

Episode Notes

Someday

In has been estimated only five percent of the population is living on purpose. The choices we make today, in the present moment, can determine the trajectory of our future success. We often make poor decisions today and later rationalize those choices by telling ourselves we will make better decisions tomorrow. We way we do anything is the way we do everything. Our actions create the habits that determine our behavior.

The Joy of Discomfort

When you identify the discomfort you have identified the place where authentic emotionally intelligent leadership is needed. The willingness to engage in activities that create discomfort is essential to the health of an organization. There is a growing need to develop the soft skills and habits necessary to become trusted advisors as the organization learns how to embrace innovation and change.

Episode #31: Worst Case Scenario

There is an old saying… It’s not what happens, it’s what happens next. The motivation to face worst case possibilities comes from an emotional connection to the Vision of a desired result that is stronger than our fear. These situations require our emotional labor. This is how we reconnect with our authentic selves while developing our emotional intelligence.

Becoming confident in our ability to handle potential worst case scenarios deduces stress and this enables us to lower our walls. Learning to stay focused during worst case conditions is the type of emotional intelligence that produces better results. In conflict situations, when our walls go up and we lose focus and we burn trust or in extreme situations people die.

Staying calm is the true test of our effectiveness at handling challenges. By lowing our walls, blood continues to flow to the neocortex part of the brain and we are able to explore potentially creative and innovative solutions to a problem. However, when we raise our walls the neocortex shuts down triggering an automatic fight, flight or freeze response.

The anxiety we feel when we step outside of our comfort zone comes from practicing failure in advance. Anxiety often stops us from moving forward toward our desired results. The development of our emotional intelligence is essential for us to be able to manage our amygdales’ fear response. It is the essential tool we need to explore potential worst case scenarios on the way to achieving our desired results.

Worst Case Global Scenarios

Climate Change; Clean Water; Population Growth; Human Rights; Economic Inequality; Education; Regional Conflicts

MBL Minute: Awakening And Change Your Frequency Change Your Results

Episode Notes

Awakening

“Now I feel like I have this translation layer between my unconscious urges and my actions.”

This comment made by Andrew Wright, a recent guest on the podcast and an MBL alumnus, was a very wise reflection. We don’t know what we don’t know but once we find out there is no turning back. Once begun, the journey to awakening is irreversible. For those who are ready to do the emotional labor required, this awakening will shift their actions and results. With each person who awakens it becomes easier for others to follow this path. Only by awakening can we appreciate that our greatest gift and power is our ability to choose.

Change Your Frequency, Change Your Results

Albert Einstein once stated that everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy, this is physics. We are each a mass of energy vibrating at a unique frequency. Our emotions also have a unique frequency associated with each one. The closer we get to the frequency of enlightenment the better our results. We must first make a committed decision to achieve that frequency before we can begin to experience the results and awareness the journey will create. This is what all great leaders share in common. They begin with the end in mind.

MBL Minute: Standard Of Performance And Good And Bad Habits

Episode Notes

A Standard of Performance

The way you do anything is the way you do everything. When you implement an effective standard of performance within an organization successful outcomes occur without having to focus on them (non-attachment to outcome). The results take care of themselves when you focus on and master the process. There needs to be an urgentness to adopt the new performance standard. Hiring, firing, promotion and employment decisions need to reflect the stand of performance you have established. An organization’s performance standard defines and determines how the culture and behavior will evolve. Each company is designed for the results they are getting.

Good or Bad Habits

All habits are meant to be addictive so they can be easily repeated. That is why we need to make sure the habits we are developing are good ones. The first time you tasted food as a baby your brain instantly created a chemical reaction and you received a massive and unexpected award. The reward was a dose of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Your eyes went wide with surprise and amazement. You began frantically moving your head and kicking with legs. Your brain said “Wow, this is great, I want more.” now.

MBL Minute: Genius Mastery And Ego Or Authentic Self

Episode Notes

Genius Mastery

This requires a conscious, deliberate and extended practice. If we are learning to master a complex skill such as flying a jet or participating in a triathlon we must first master a series of simpler micro skills, one on top of another. Each time one skill becomes automatic, through a process brain researchers call automaticity, the mind is freed up to focus on the next higher skill. Over time these skills become fused together in a way that transforms us and unleashes our genius mastery. In this stage of enlightenment we enter a state of unconscious flow with our internal and external environments

Alter Ego or Authentic Self

The choice to wear a mask and behave like someone else moves us further from our authentic selves. When we are young, we are told to be kind, open, loving and generous. When we stood up to the bullies for treating someone badly we got shoved in a locker. Our mindset began to change. Being open, kind and generous can sometimes come at a price. So we put on masks to protect ourselves as we try to fit in with others. The athletic mask. The material mask. The intellectual mask. The control mask. The joker mask. The know it all.

MBL Minute: Creating Leaders And Community

Episode Notes

Creating Leaders

Authentic, emotionally intelligent leaders are not born they are made. These are the types of individuals and organizations people are inspired to trust and follow. The Harvard Business Review has called emotional intelligence a revolutionary paradigm shifting idea. By reconnecting with our authentic selves while developing our emotional intelligence we inspire highly engaged followers. In contrast to the authentic, emotionally intelligent leader, the opposite occurs when individuals try to use positive-based power to control and manipulate others. They feed off of the drama, chaos and conflict this creates. Their actions are incapable of inspiring highly engaged trusted relationships.

Community

The greatest act of community service we can perform is living on purpose. When you are not living on purpose you end up working for someone else, following their Vision and not your own. You do not risk very much so you do not grow very much. You are driving through life with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. The growing community of authentic emotionally intelligent individuals and organizations can be readily recognized by their ongoing commitment to living on purpose.

**MBL Minute: Bridge To Action And Magical Results**

Episode Notes

The Bridge to Action

The bridge to action is emotion. If you think about where you are and where you want to be, that’s thinking. The bridge that turns thinking into action and results is emotion. The thinking or rational part of our brain is incapable of initiating action or generating results. How we show up emotionally is the key. The emotional labor of connecting with our authentic self combined with the development of our emotional intelligence is our only real superpower.

We are moving toward the best version of ourselves. This superpower is the only real tool we have to combat our built in resistance to innovation and change.

Magical Results

As we develop our authenticity and emotional intelligence magical results begin to appear with greater frequency. Our misunderstood fear stands in the way of experiencing our own personal magic. It blinds us from being able to see our authentic selves. Fear is not meant to be conquered. We need to learn how to coexist with our fear as we move through it toward our desired results. Raising our walls and fighting fear only strengthens it. Being less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome is the magical key to better results. Fear has always been the primal source of motivation for us to take action. We need to learn how to harness and use it to embrace the opportunities and challenges we face.

Episode #30: Soft Skills

The so called soft skills of authenticity and emotional intelligence are anything but soft. They are the key to becoming a trusted advisor to those you serve. These are soft skills that produce hard results. We need a coherent method for improving soft skills among talented people. Often when a company is struggling financially the first thing to go out the window is the very thing they should be focusing on for better results. The development of people with the courage to embrace innovation and change. If your organization wants to create more value and better profit margins these are the people we need to be relying upon.

Almost all company soft skills training is terrible at creating sustainably better results. The central skill of future jobs will be an individual’s willingness to do the emotional labor that change and innovation requires. Schools have not taught us this so we need to encourage people to close this developmental gap in their abilities. If we care enough about our future success we need to be unleashing the human potential within our organizations. Culture beats strategy and technology every time. We need to be creating cultures that truly care about those they serve.

Management and leadership require different skill sets designed to achieve different outcomes. Management’s primary function is to maintain and improve upon the status quo. The role of leadership is to move beyond the status quo in order for innovation and change to occur. You can manage tasks but you must be willing to develop the soft skills of authentic emotionally intelligent leadership if you want you and your organization to succeed.

The notorious RBG has been speaking truth to power from her seat on the US Supreme Court for over two decades. Her authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership has been evident throughout her life. She has been following her own path rather than conforming to the views of others. This has required ongoing emotional labor in order to make her own map and see the world through clear eyes.

Privacy and Enlightened Leadership

The tech entrepreneurs that have become billionaire visionaries are in many cases not like you and me. They are obsessed and laser focused. Sometimes they are as equally underdeveloped as they are overdeveloped. They often lack the enlightened leadership essential to manage and control their emergent power and influence.

**MBL Minute: The Key And Transforming Decisions To Habits**

Episode Notes

The Key

Authentic emotionally intelligent leaders say “I’m going this way. Would you like to come with me?” Leadership and management are fundamentally different. The former requires risk and inspired followers whereas the latter focuses on control. The lack of authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership is the root cause of the drama, chaos and conflict we see in individuals and organizations. It is the key that opens every lock.

Transforming Decisions Into Habits

All of our unconscious habits started out as conscious decisions to take action. It is through repetition that those conscious decisions are transformed into unconscious habits. The process by which this occurs is called automaticity. Our brain does this to increase our response speed and reduce the amount of energy needed to trigger those responses. We perform tasks without consciously thinking about them most of the time.

MBL Minute: Wisdom, Experience And Perspective

Episode Notes

Wisdom and Experience

We need to improve our ability to make choices based upon wisdom rather than experience. It is an awareness and understanding of the choices we are making and the effects of those choices. Wisdom requires us to move beyond our paradigm and become more fully present. Authentic emotionally intelligent individuals demonstrate enlightened wisdomthrough their actions.

Perspective

Seneca was one of the original stoic thinkers. He was born in Spain and lived much of his life in Rome as an advisor to several emperors. His timeless wisdom and advice has not grown stale in the nearly 2,000 years since it was written. Anger can cause us to lose our perspective. When we are angry we are no longer able to view things objectively. We are unable to see the bigger picture because our mind has shifted into “survival” mode. We cannot control our primal brain any more than we can control our digestion or heartbeat.

MBL Minute: The Practice Of Mastery And Lincoln's Emotional Labor

Episode Notes

The Practice of Mastery

Every master has developed a strong emotional connection to the Vision of their desired result. This is what creates the motivation to take action but it is the going practice of those actions that creates mastery. We all aspire to mastery but the path is always long and sometimes rocky. The master understands that the journey is the destination. The achievement of goals is important but the key to mastery is not in the results obtained but rather in the process of achieving those results.

Lincoln’s Emotional Labor

Abraham Lincoln often referred to givers as those with the courage to bringing forth the better angels of their nature. Authentic leadership and emotional intelligence are developed by doing the emotional labor of moving through our fears as opposed to being controlled by them. We all have challenging situations that leave us feeling tired or discouraged. The following is a partial list on the many challenges Abraham Lincoln faced that required his emotional labor. It is an example of how individuals and organizations can grow despite their challenges.

MBL Minute: Training And Seek First To Understand

Episode Notes

Training

“Training is like sweeping the floor. Just because we’ve done it once, doesn’t mean the floor is clean forever. Every day the dust comes back. Every day we must sweep.” Ryan Holiday The same can be said for ego and the walls it creates within us. Ego, left unchecked can destroy individuals and organizations. Our ego is both the source of motivation and the barrier to our success. The ongoing challenge we face is in learning how to succeed despite our ego.

Seek First To Understand

Asking a good question can be more effective than making a statement or offering a solution. The art of asking a good question can help focus awareness, thoughts and actions. The following questions may provide you with some new insights and motivation on your journey to achieving your desired results.

Episode #29: Town Halls

The town hall meeting is used by governments and companies as an informal way to address issues in their own community or organization. An executive report is given and then individuals and guests have an opportunity to ask questions, talk about the issues they find important and discuss potential solutions.

A town hall is a place for a conversation and meaningful discussion. Authentic emotionally intelligent leaders are able to look at the challenges and opportunities they face without resistance, judgement or attachment to outcome. They are able to inspire trust and higher levels of engagement by communicating with openness, truth and passion.

The following comments are from Master of Business Leadership alumnus Bill Wiersma. He is the Canadian Regional Account Manager at Flexera Software. Bill has been leading sales and engineering teams for over 25 years.

  • A town hall should not be used to publicly address performance issues in front of the whole organization. The team or individual already knows that they have not performed to the expected level and calling out this poor performance only serves to lessen the willingness to be open and engage in the discussion.

  • Even if the overall tone of the town hall is downbeat due to poor results and targets you must still celebrate the successes. This serves to bolster engagement. It is also a good time to acknowledge exceptional performance.

  • The success or failure of a town hall is determined well before the actual event. For example, if ideas for some issue or opportunity were requested in a previous town hall they should be reported on in subsequent town halls. If the ideas are seen as going into a "black hole" then further requests may well be ignored.

  • Consistency:

  • The overall agenda should be consistent from meeting to meeting.

  • The participants that speak should also be consistent. For example, if Sales or HR speaks; they should always have some time.
  • The frequency of the meeting should be constant. If they are quarterly; hold them every quarter. Do not skip because it could foster negative rumors and uncertainty.

  • The best town halls in my opinion were ones lead by a department head rather than the CEO or President. The CEO still has his or her "state of the union" but they do not monopolize the agenda. This gives others a chance to step up.

MBL Minute: Decisions And A Billion Dollar Idea

Episode Notes

Decisions

In order to harness the power of decision making we need to understand what it means to make a decision. A true decision means that we remove our self from any other possibility. Yes means yes and no means no. There is an additional element that must go hand in hand with a true decision and that is commitment.

A Billion Dollar Business Idea

It must have been frustrating for Henry Ford to discuss the emerging automotive industry with individuals who believed cars would never replace horses as the main form of transportation. Revolutionary change has always been met with fear and skepticism by the masses. We find it very difficult to embrace change and innovation.

MBL Minute: Enjoying Our Fear And Learning

Episode Notes

Enjoying Our Fear

Fear can take us to a lot of interesting places. Learning how not to be afraid of our fear can help us to wake up and simply enjoy living in the moment. It can enable us to slow down and have fun with those around us exactly where we are right now. We can lead and inspire others to move in a positive direction by simply being more present. Fear is like gravity, it is everywhere all the time. The development of our authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership comes from mastering the ability to move through our fear.

Learning

There are two basic types of learning. The first is the intellectual learning that occurs during the acquisition of knowledge. The second is the experiential learning that happens when we put that knowledge into action. The former requires our intellectual labor while the latter uses emotional labor.

MBL Minute: Game Changer Bernard Klopfer

Episode Notes

Companies are beginning to focus less on real estate and more on people. The executives who have chosen to develop their authenticity and emotional intelligence are creating game changing results. They are creating a global mesh of trusted advisor networks.

When we burn trust we incur a “trust tax”on future interactions. Conversely, as we earn trust by learning to lower our walls we earn a “trust dividend.” It is the development of our authenticity and emotional intelligence that enables us to lower our walls while inspiring others to do the same.

Our special guest on this podcast is Bernard Klopfer (https://www.linkedin.com/in/bernard-klopfer-054354/). Bernard is senior director of marketing and sales enablement at Jabil. MBL Minute: Consumers Are In Charge And Knowledge Vs Experience

Episode Notes

We are largely blind to a huge gap in our education and development. This gap is responsible for the drama, chaos and conflict we have all experienced. The work of closely this gap is being embraced by more and more individuals and organizations. The evidence is overwhelming that authenticity and emotional intelligence training removes the drama, chaos and conflict found within organizations. If you look around I am certain you can see lots of examples of the hidden and not so hidden costs created by the lack of authenticity and emotional intelligence.

Are we human beings seeking a spiritual experience or spiritual beings having a human experience? I believe we are spiritual beings, made up of energy and vibration, who live for a relatively short period of time in human form. When our physical form wears out we return to vibrational energy. It would be helpful if we learned to experience greater present moment awareness and deepen the connection with our spiritual intelligence. We can accomplish this by focusing on the stillness that is created within us as we become less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome. Our refusal to raise our walls and give away our energy to others is the key.

MBL Minute: Progress and I Robot

Episode Notes

Progress is rarely if ever easy. When we take two steps forward the status quo often pressures us to take one step back. The recognition and acceptance of emotional intelligence as an essential 21 Century skill is working its way through the following progression. Each revolutionary idea always starts out on the fringe of society. It is importance not obvious, proven or readily explained. Gradually that fringe idea begins to resonate with those in need. Initially it may appear risky but today more and more individuals and organizations are recognizing its importance.

Over the past 200 million years we have evolved to behave like organic robots most of the time. Automaticity is the mind’s process of gradually enslaving us to the actions we choose to practice each day. Our results are merely a reflection of the habits we have developed and strengthened over time. What we practice we become and what we become determines who we attract into our lives and who we attract determines our results and the quality of our life. This unconscious process has been fundamental to our survival. We are performing actions without actually thinking about them approximately 95% of the time.

Episode #28: Angels, Demons And Middle Management

Management’s primary function is to maintain and improve upon the existing status quo. In this process they are often pulled in the direction of the angels or demons within the organization.

Abraham Lincoln sometimes referred to certain people as those with the courage to bringing forth the better angels of their nature. In contrast to these individuals, demons habitually hide their true intent to control and manipulate others.

Demons lack the authenticity and emotional intelligence that is fundamental to inspirational leadership. They create unsafe, toxic work environments where attempts to innovate and change go unrewarded. They encourage drama, chaos and conflict. Demons have the greatest difficulty embracing innovation and change.

Angels have discovered that the key better results is learning to lower their walls by becoming less resistive, judgmental and attached to outcome. An organization can have the best strategic plan in the world but without a culture rooted in authenticity and emotional intelligence it will not succeed.

Today more and more companies are cultivating and promoting authenticity and emotional intelligence throughout their organizations. Their better angels are emerging to out care their competition. Generosity and compassion require courage and strength of purpose. This is the key to higher levels of engagement, productivity and growth.

Historically the market value of a company was often considered to be roughly twice its net asset value. Now the market value of a growing number of companies is, in some cases, forty or fifty times their net asset value. Why the change? It is because the market is beginning to understand and value the importance of the human capital within an organization.

The development of the organization’s authenticity and emotionally intelligence is their key advantage in the marketplace. It enables them to take action and in the process confront the fears, habits and perceptions that stand in the way of innovation and change. It creates higher levels of engagement ensuring better results both now and in the future.

We are seeing a fundamental shift in organizational behavior. A growing number of individuals and organizations are learning how to become more patient, connected and emotionally intelligent. There are significant challenges associated with these shifts in behavior but the need and the results outweigh the emotional labor required to achieve them. The development of our human potential will produce better results both now and in the future.

The path to developing our emotional intelligence begins by visualizing what we want. We must see what we want before we can start to bring it into reality. We are doing one of the wisest things we can possibly do by working from the inside out. Our current results are nothing more than the physical manifestation of our previous thoughts.

MBL Minute: Moving Through Generations And The Magic Key

Episode Notes

We are standing on the shoulders of all the generations that have come before us. It is not enough for us to simply read about and admire their challenges and accomplishments. We have our own work to do just as they had their work to accomplish. We can honor their efforts by working to develop our authenticity and emotional intelligence.

Experiencing the magic of living on purpose requires us to become comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. Pursuing our passion creates and inspires magical results for us and those with whom we interact. It is the greatest act of community service we can perform. When we change our inner world our outer world changes as well. It is important for us to both feel and understand the anxiety that change creates. Our fear is the indication that are actions are taking us out of our comfort zones. We must learn how to constructively experience and move through our fear and not be controlled by it. This is what is referred to as emotional labor.

MBL Minute: Ant Colonies And Wood vs Heat

Episode Notes

Companies need to focus less on growing their business and more on building organizations that can embrace change. Any discussion about business, leadership and profit should include ants. Ant colonies do not have bosses. Every ant knows their job and they are able to do it without the drama, chaos and conflict we see in most organizations.

Imagine that you are standing in front of a large fireplace with your arms full of wood. Using someone else’s actions to justify your lack of engagement is like saying to that fireplace “I’ll give you wood when you give me heat.” Disheartened by others’ failure to give, we often stubbornly refuse to give of ourselves, resulting in a frustrating stalemate. The answer isn’t to stop giving. It is to give more. Your level of engagement is always your choice, regardless of the circumstances.

MBL Minute: Loyalty Integrity And Reflections On Success

Episode Notes

Loyalty and integrity are key virtues. Their presence is reflected through the authenticity and emotional intelligence of our actions. Clearly we are all works-in-progress when it comes to these key virtues. ‘I trust you’ is the greatest compliment we can ever receive. Trust is a gift that is given to us by others. We need be able to demonstrate our trustworthiness in order to earn the trust of those we seek to serve. Loyalty and integrity provide evidence of our trustworthiness.

Success Q&A

  1. What do you want to achieve this year?
  2. This is where change begins. An ongoing sense of urgency is essential for actions that lead you to better results.

  3. Why are better habits necessary to achieve better results?

  4. Because our current habits are getting us our current results. They cannot get us better results. If we want better results we need better habits.

MBL Minute: Know Your Why And Truth

Episode Notes

The emotional connection you have with the Vision of your desired results is the key to actually achieving those results. It will keep you focused on the benefits and rewards while providing the grit to move through the inevitable challenges you will face along the way. The lifelong journey toward better results, growth and enlightenment will involve several separate and distinct Visions. Each of these “whys” will act as motivational stepping stones that will build upon the emotional labor required by the previous Visions that got you to this point on your journey.

Results do not tell the whole truth. They often focus our attention while ignoring the process of achieving the actual result. A “results of any cost” mentally invariably leads to the creation of toxic work environments and low levels of engagement. Organizations, at their core were never built for change. They were built around the ideology of control. We need to change the way organizations change so that it is ahead of the curve and not the product of crises.

MBL Minute: Our Greatest Gift And Strong Leadership Personalities

Episode Notes

One of our greatest gifts and powers is the ability to be objective when facing life’s many challenges. This allows us the opportunity to move through our fear rather than being controlled by it on the way to better results. Emotional intelligence enables us to feel our emotions while at the same time watching them unfold objectively without resistance, judgment or attachment to outcome. Most of us are unprepared to handle the terrifying emotions that come from moving outside of our comfort zone. The process of developing our emotional intelligence can help to prepare our self for the accelerating changes we face.

I was recently asked if the world is experiencing a shortage of good leaders with strong personalities. The following was my response. There has always been a severe shortage of authentic emotionally intelligent leaders. Each of these leaders have unique personalities that reflect their authenticity. As a result, you could never confuse one authentic leader with another.

Episode #27: Value Creation

Historically the market value of a company was often considered to be roughly twice its net asset value. Now the market value of a growing number of companies is, in some cases, forty or fifty times their net asset value. Why the change? It is because the market is beginning to understand and truly value the importance of the human capital within an organization.

There is a fundamental difference between knowing what to do and doing what we know. The former involves intellectual labor while the latter requires our emotional labor. Both types of work are important. The two processes working together are designed to create the greatest market value.

The education we received focused primarily on the intellectual labor of acquiring knowledge. This has left a huge gap in our development. The emotional intelligence that comes from doing emotional labor is essential to enable us to navigate through the challenges we face.

Increasingly, individuals are being passed over for promotion because of a lack of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is developed from doing the emotional labor of doing what we think we know, from using the knowledge we have acquired.

Up until recently the main focus has been on doing intellectual labor within corporations. There was little awareness or focus on the need for emotional intelligence. As a result we see a much broader gap in the level of emotional intelligence among executives within organizations.

The authentic and emotionally intelligent among us have the potential to create the greatest value. While those that focus primarily on doing intellectual labor will find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.

MBL Minute: The Secret Sauce And The Marshmallow Experiment

Episode Notes

The word grit has often been used to refer to the secret sauce behind most high level achievement. There has been no clear consensus about why only some people appear to have this ability. In my experience, it is the practice of doing emotional labor that develops an individual’s grittiness. It comes from a strong emotional connection to the Vision of a desired result. It is your emotions, not our thoughts that is the primary driver of our behaviour.

There are two fundamental choices we make that underlie all business and personal decisions. The first involves the avoidance of potential pain and the second is the more challenging choice of delaying gratification in order to achieve an even greater purpose and result. The marshmallow principle applies in almost every area of business and personal life. Namely, the willingness and self-control to resist the urge for immediate gratification in order to obtain even greater future results.

MBL Minute: Handling Leadership And Changing Our Results

Episode Notes

If you can handle being different, standing out from the crowd, your life should be quite interesting. When you let your light shine you give others permission to do the same. As you are liberated from your own fear your presence automatically liberates others. When you move outside of your comfort zone the wolves around you will try to stop you from leading others in a better direction. Wolves are cunning hunters that seek to feed off of fear by creating increasing amounts of drama, chaos, conflict and disengagement. Trying to manage these symptoms while ignoring the root cause of the problem has become a dated and obsolete approach. There is a better way.

Results always tell the truth. Our view of reality has been conditioned by our paradigm. By changing our habits we can change our level of awareness and results. Our subconscious mind in programmed with what is called a paradigm. Our paradigm determines our actions and how we use the vast majority of our energy each day. It is our habitual control system that requires no conscious thought. Any improvement in performance will only be temporary unless we change our paradigm. Most of our existing habits have been programmed in us as a result of the environments into which we were born. The conscious thoughts we think are in harmony with the unconscious habits of our paradigm. We form ideas, behavioral patterns and results that are aligned with our current paradigm.

MBL Minute: Competition For Talent And Barrel Of Apples

Episode Notes

Research has shown it typically takes an IQ of 110-120 to get an advanced college degree. Up until now most companies have focused on an individual’s ability to do intellectual labor. As a result there is little variation within an organization in intellectual ability at the executive level. Further, there has been little or no consideration given to an individual’s level of authenticity and emotional intelligence. So there is a much wider range of variation in authenticity and emotional intelligence among executives and other employees within an organization.

“One bad apple can spoil a barrel but one good egg does not make a dozen.”

It is much easier to remove toxic individuals from an organization although most people have the ability to change their behavior if they are motivated to do the work required. Unfortunately toxic individuals often use their position based power to create drama, chaos and conflict within their organizations. The results of this type of behavior and the culture it creates has become too costly to tolerate.

MBL Minute: Character Patterns And Leadership In Crisis

Episode Notes

Character is developed over time by the habits we practice and engrave into our unconscious mind. This is called automaticity. It is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. The deliberate creation of conflict, chaos and drama for the purpose of manipulating others reflects a character lacking in authenticity and emotional intelligence. An organization’s executives must lead the change process. Especially when it involves changes or disruption to the patterns that they have grown accustom.

Our institutions have proven incapable of providing the safety and inspirational leadership many of us seek. We have a mistaken perception of power as external, something that needed to be acquired and controlled. Authentic leadership requires a lifelong commitment to the practice of ongoing emotional labor. Transcending our ego is the key to ending the drama, chaos and conflict we see everywhere. The inherent dysfunction ego creates causes suffering to ourselves and others. We cannot fight against ego and win, just as we cannot fight against our own darkness.

MBL Minute: Health Insurance And Emotional Endorphins

Episode Notes

The work we love doing is not just a job, it is health insurance. As we reconnect with our authentic selves and develop our emotional intelligence a healthy connection the brain’s pleasure neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin is established. We experience the joy and rewarding effects of living on purpose. Our unconscious need to steal and control the energy of others comes from our unwillingness to do the emotional labor required to live of purpose. The habit of giving away our energy and stealing the energy of others is the root cause that underlies all drama, chaos and conflict.

Whether it is running in a race or performing some other type of physical challenge, our body has developed the ability to produce chemical endorphins that temporarily mask physical pain. This enables us to continue moving forward toward the achievement of our desired results. In a similar way we can develop our emotional endorphins, through the practice of doing emotional labor. This enables us to move through the stress and anxiety change produces toward our desired results. Taking action that regularly moves us out of our comfort zone helps to reduce the drama, chaos and conflict in our lives. It increases our awareness and focuses our attention on the task at hand while generating positive emotions.
