Welcome back after a long break! We've missed you all and we are so excited to bring you all the content we've been working on while we were missing from your podcast feed. Introducing our new Respectful Parenting: IRL Series! We hope you can see yourself and your children in these raw and honest interviews.

On today's episode, mom of two and village member, Arna Meyer, joins us to talk about how we can adjust our expectations for ourselves and our kids on a daily basis. There’s this idea in respectful parenting that if you do this “the right way” that your kids will stop the misbehaviors, tantrums and outbursts. But we know that just isn’t the case. So how can we allow our kids to have the space to express and at the same time teach them pro social ways to be in community with others? How can we get through these days with our kids without feeling like we’re failing? We chat about simple things you can do everyday to see these changes in your day to day life. Love this podcast? We talk a lot at Seed and Sew about emotional intelligence, emotional processing and helping our tiny humans build their toolboxes. But what does that actually look like? What are the steps and how do we help facilitate these skills in our kiddos? In today's episode of Voices of Your Village, my CEP co-creator, Lauren Stauble, joined me to break down our method step by step. We dove into each phase of emotional processing, avoiding common pitfalls and how fostering these skills not only gives our kiddos an emotional toolbox for life, but also greatly impacts the parenting experience.

On This episode of Voices of Your Village I chat with pediatric occupational therapist and woman behind Thriving Littles, Katie Crosby, about the important topic of co-regulation and self-regulation. What is the difference between the two? And what is an appropriate timeline for moving from co-reg in infancy to self-reg as kiddo's get older? We dive into what we as parents and caregivers need to bring to the table in order to help guide our kiddos through their big emotions, and what we need to do in order for our tiny humans to build the skillset they need to self-regulate.

Welcome back to the podcast! On today's episode I sit down to chat about other ways to respond to behavior instead of spanking. There's tons of research out there that talks about why spanking isn't productive and how it can actually breed patterns of abuse for children who were spanked to then repeat patterns of abuse in adulthood. So in this episode I'm diving in to what to do instead and how to support our kiddos in the moment in changing behavior and seeing different patterns without using physical force as an adult.

Welcome back everyone! On this episode of the podcast we're chatting about why kids lie. What's the driver behind it, and how can we respond in a way that's emotionally supportive and truly gets at the root. For many of us lying can bring up triggers from our own childhood, social programing, and maybe what we learned about lying or experiences we had around lying. We'll chat about how this might come up and how to tend to those parts of yourself so that you can show up for the tiny human in front of you.

Welcome back villagers! This week on the podcast we are talking about the importance of timing, when to talk about the behavior. So often we have this inclination to step in and talk about it right then because we have these underlying fears that if we don't, we are sending the message that the behavior is okay, or that we are encouraging it. But the reality is that waiting to talk about it can have huge benefits in the short term and the long term for both you and your kiddo. Tune in to this episode to learn more about when we should be talking about these behaviors with our kids!

Hey there village! I'm here with a solo episode for you today, we talk so much here at Seed about how the goal is not perfection. And while you might be on board, how often at the end of the day do you find yourself laying on the blame for things that happened throughout the day? We can't let our kids know that it's okay to make mistakes without giving that gift to ourselves.

Welcome back to the podcast! In today's episode I got to chat with Dr. Becky Kennedy, who you might know as Dr. Becky at home over on Instagram. After last week's episode on fostering a secure attachment, we had a lot of questions about what it looks like to walk away from a child who is still upset. How can we support our kiddos without necessarily being next to them? This was a great conversation and I can't wait to hear your takeaways.

Welcome back village! This week I got to sit down with another brilliant OT to talk what neurodiversity means, what the sensory systems are and what it could look like if every single one of us knew how our sensory systems worked. How could life be different if we knew what was helpful for us for regulation, what pulled from our withdrawals so that we we're able to self-regulate and then co-regulate with kids and learn about their nervous system.

I love Rachel's take on neurodiversity and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

Welcome back to another episode, in this rebroadcast of an old favorite, I sat down with Bryce of the instagram handle, Mombraintherapist, her practice specializes in helping moms on this journey. We chat about the social norms and the cultural context around self care and the martyrdom that often comes with motherhood. Hey there, villagers! Welcome to episode 140 of Voices of Your Village! Today I got to interview Dr. Neal Lester, a professor of English at Arizona State University who studies African American Literature and Culture. I wanted to dive into conversation with Dr. Lester about cultural appropriation vs appreciation. This was a topic I personally had a lot of questions about and you villagers submitted a lot of questions about as well. In addition to addressing this topic as we move toward Thanksgiving and Halloween, I also find it to be important for us to dive into in our day to day life. Dr. Lester brought up so many crucial ways for us to consider and be mindful of cultural appropriation in our everyday life. This is an ongoing process. It isn’t something where you are going to have one conversation with a kid and it is going to be done and over with.

I learned a lot from this conversation and I am really jazzed to bring it to your ears today. Let’s dive in!

Hello everyone! Welcome to another episode of Voices of Your Village! Today on episode 136 I am joined by Rosalia Rivera to talk about consent parenting. What does it look like to parent from a place of consent? To teach our tiny humans from infancy what consent looks like, what it feels like, and how to advocate for it. This is a topic that is very dear to my heart and I am so jazzed that I got to hangout with Rosalia and chat about it with her. I have been following her on instagram and learning from her constantly.

Hey, everyone! Welcome to episode 131 of Voices of Your Village! Today we are diving into fertility and hormones and vaginas, oh my! During our conversation I learned so much from Lisa Hendrickson-Jack, author of The Fifth Vital Sign: Master Your Cycles & Optimize Your Fertility. Her book is so fascinating and definitely not what I grew up learning about my body. For me it has played such a huge role in my fertility journey. When I recorded this episode, it was during the time period where I was in the middle of my second miscarriage. So you’ll hear a little bit about my miscarriage journey. If you are not comfortable hearing about that you can hit pause on this episode and come back to it another time. Without further ado, let’s dive into my chat with Lisa Hendrickson-Jack.

On this episode of Voices of Your Village, I chat with pediatric occupational therapist and woman behind Thriving Littles, Katie Crosby, about the important topic of co-regulation and self-regulation. What are they? What is the difference between co-reg and self-reg? When is co-reg appropriate versus self-reg and vice versa? What is the timeline for moving from co-reg in infancy to self-reg as kiddos get older? We dive into what co-regulating and self-regulating look like, what we as parents and caregivers need to bring to the table in order to help guide our kiddos through their big emotions, and what we need to do in order for our tiny humans to build the skill-set they need to self-regulate.

Hey, everyone! Welcome to episode 129 of Voices of Your Village! A mama posted into our Facebook group asking about the Enneagram and there was this fun thread going on, when another mom, Danielle Frankel, popped into the thread to say she worked with the Enneagram. So, I asked her to come on and join me for a podcast episode because the Enneagram test is something I am so new to, but fascinated by. I think of it as one of those personality tests, but it is the most accurate thing I have found. We use it for Seed, everyone who joins my team takes the test so I have a better idea of how to best show up in relationship with them.

In this episode we are diving in to how the Enneagram can show up in your partnership, your relationships, and in parenthood. I am so jazzed to share this one with you guys! Let’s dive in!

Welcome back to Voices of Your Village, today on episode 126 we get to hangout with Dr Nicole LePera, who you may know as The Holistic Psychologist. Dr Nicole joined me to dive deep into the world of reparenting your adult self. Reparenting is a process that we go through in adulthood to relearn how to identify and meet our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Most of us struggle to realize we even have needs in any or all of these areas, so unfortunately a lot of us carry patterns into adulthood that do not serve us. In this glorious episode, we answered some lovely questions posed by you villagers and chatted about the importance of doing this work. Without further ado, let’s get listening!

On this episode of Voices of Your Village, I talk about fostering emotional development in infants and toddlers. So often when we talk about emotion coaching with kiddos we’re talking about kiddos who have verbal language, kiddos who are far enough along with their cognitive development that their receptive language is advanced enough for them to understand everything that we say to them, and perhaps they are able to verbally express their desires. However, we’ve been getting so many questions lately about what this means when we’re talking about infants and young toddlers. Can we even do this work now? Check out this week’s episode to find out!

On another episode in our Q&A series, I chat with stay-at-home-mama to an almost two-year-old, Nicole, about anxiety surrounding her tiny human’s crying. We discuss the pressure society puts on mamas to be the answer to her kiddos’ cries, and how mamas should “just know” what their child needs at all times (spoiler: they don’t, and they shouldn’t). Does letting our kiddo cry cause irreparable damage? Our conversation went down many different avenues, including how being a perfect parent does not exist, and how this journey is about intention, not perfection. So many parents will find Nicole’s perspective so relatable. Let’s dive in.

We continue our special Q&A series with Sarah, mama and early educator, who asked me all of her questions about implementing emotion processing strategies in the toddler classroom. Caring for more than one kiddo at a time presents some unique challenges, so not only do these questions apply to the classroom, but to parents of more than one kiddo, too. How do we use the CEP method when it’s difficult to give a child the one-on-one time that is needed to do so? What about letting a kiddo feel a hard emotion when it could disturb naptime? How should we respond to a tiny human seeking attention through negative behavior? Get a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes for teachers and just how much intention goes into what they do for our tiny humans.

Have you ever wondered how you are supposed to teach your tiny humans how to process their hard emotions if you’re not even sure how to process your own? Maybe you didn’t receive this skill-set growing up and wonder how, then, you can teach your kiddos. On this episode of Voices of Your Village, we kick off our Q&A series, where members of our village get to ask me all of their most dire parenting questions. I’m so jazzed to start off chatting with April, who has been a part of our Seed village for a couple of years now. She wonders things like: How long should I let my kiddo feel a hard emotion? When is it okay to implement a coping mechanism? When should I engage my daughter in a coping strategy? What if she’s feeling a hard emotion because I lost my cool and yelled? How do I handle other adults in my child’s life who may not have this toolbox like I do yet? If any of these questions resonate with you, you don’t want to miss this!

On this episode of Voices of Your Village, I chat with pediatric occupational therapist and woman behind Thriving Littles, Katie Crosby, about the important topic of co-regulation and self-regulation.

Have you ever really thought about what causes disappointment you experience in life? If you break it down, disappointment is usually a result of your expectations not being met in a situation. How does being self aware of our expectations aid in emotion processing for ourselves? How can this self awareness help us help our kiddos with emotion processing? Raise your hand if you entered parenthood with feelings, expectations, and experiences from your own childhood that affect who you are as a parent. Yep, all hands in the air. The thing is, in order to be the parents we want to be, we have to look at what we are bringing to the table. At the end of the day it can absolutely feel like your kiddo is deliberately not picking up their toys when they know better. We are inclined to punish the child for not obeying the rule. How can we reframe this and see the message the child is sending? Parenting coach, Irene McKenna is guiding us through her experience both as a parent and supporting other parents on this journey. This episode is loaded with goodies!! Happy listening.

On this episode of Voices of Your Village, we’re diving into how to foster a relationship of trust with our tiny humans. Most of us think of the big moments when we think about trust, like them coming to us with a big secret, or them turning to us when they need someone to confide in. But to become that person for them, we must first build that trust, and it happens in the small moments. What are these important trust-building moments? How does being honest and setting and holding boundaries build trust with our kiddos? Why is it important for us to trust them, too? Tune in to this episode to find out.

Did you know that I am obsessed with moms? Maybe it's because I was born on Mother's Day, but moms have just always had a special place in my heart. This year I asked partners to answer three questions. They each sent me their video responses and we put together a podcast of the complete answers from everyone as well as a video of a snapshot into folks answers. The video can be found at https://seedandsew.org/mothersday/

The questions I asked about their partners as mamas were:

1) Looking into the future, what is one lesson you hope your kiddos take from her?

2) Describe her in three words.

3) What do you admire most about her as a mom?

Hey mamas, you're killing it and we love you.

In this special episode of Voices of Your Village, I got to interview the most incredible woman I know: my mama. We chatted about her experiences in motherhood. What was it like raising five kiddos? How did her childhood influence her parenting style? Did she always know she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom? What was most challenging and most rewarding? What would she tell her younger mama self? Tune in today to get a little bit of a glimpse into my upbringing and why I feel like I hit the jackpot with my mama and my entire family.

In today’s episode of Voices of Your Village, we dive into how to foster a relationship where you are someone your child can be vulnerable with. We go into what to say to your kiddo instead of something like, “It made me sad when you hit me,” while also still being able to set and hold boundaries and keep them accountable for their actions. We also get into how managing our own anxiety and practicing self care aids us in being better able to address our tiny human’s behavior with emotion coaching, rather than unloading our feelings on them. Tune in today to hear all about why it’s so important our kiddos don’t feel responsible for our feelings, and how to make sure they don’t.

In today’s episode of Voices of Your Village, our sleep consultant Rachel gives us the low down on newborn sleep. Newborn sleep can be tricky because it is so vastly different than sleep in older babies. How often should they nap? Where should they nap? Can they safely sleep on their stomachs? What about in an adult bed? Is there anything that be done to get more nighttime sleep? What about nursing to sleep or holding the baby? Are these bad habits? Rachel and I dove into all of these questions and more. We talked about the intersection between newborn sleep and newborn feeding and how to optimize both. And we talked about the importance of balance, grace, and tapping in your village to maintain your mental health during the more challenging times. Tune in today to have your newborn sleep questions answers!

We talk a lot at Seed and Sew about emotional intelligence, emotional processing, and helping our tiny humans build their toolboxes. But what does that actually look like? What are the steps and how do we help facilitate these skills in our kiddos? In today’s episode of Voices of Your Village, my CEP co-creator, Lauren Stauble, joined me to break down our method step by step. We dove into each phase of emotional processing, avoiding common pitfalls (like problem solving too soon), and how fostering these skills not only gives our kiddos an emotional toolbox for life, but also greatly impacts the parenting experience. Tune in today if you know you want to help your kiddo effectively process their emotions but you’re not sure exactly how or where to start!

Pacifiers! Oy vey, the questions, the shame, the guilt, the fear, this one comes as a heavy one that my pal Amanda joined me to lighten up a bit. Amanda, a Speech Language Pathologist and owner of Simply Spoken Therapy, taught me how pacifiers affect oral motor development, which ones are better for oral motor at different ages and stages, and when it may be beneficial to transition away from them. I touched for a second on the emotional development role pacifiers can play, and when to build your kiddos toolbox beyond pacifiers. This is a judgment-free zone. We are here to have a conversation. If you find yourself feeling shame or guilt as you tune in, pause, work on navigating and processing that, and then open your heart to learning more. It’s never too early or too late to make a change.

Our kids are growing up in a different world than we did; a more accepting world, and one with conversation we need to be prepared to have. Gender fluidity and identity is something many of us did not grow up talking about, but thankfully, that has changed, and we need the language to evolve, too.  Trystan Reese, a trans father of three, and social justice activist joined me on the show to dive into how to talk to kids about gender. What age is it appropriate to address gender? How do we do it? Trystan acknowledged that perfection isn’t the goal here, but rather mindful, intentional parenting, and knowing we always get a second chance. Trystan has a beautiful way of discussing this topic.  I learned so much from him and am excited to share this guidance with you. Head on over to Instagram to follow Trystan and his husband Biff’s journey through parenthood @biffandi.

She’s baacccckkk!!! One of my favorite people to nerd out with over child development, OT Lori Goodrich, from episode 4 is back on the podcast today! I’d never given much thought to how solid foods played a role in the sensory system before Lori entered my world. Sure, it’s about taste and texture, but it’s also about oral motor development and how food affects the system. I learned so much from Lori from the best cup to use, to the ideal chairs for kiddos to sit in while eating, and how different foods play a role in oral motor development. Sometimes food challenges can be learned behavior and boundary-pushing, but sometimes there is something beneath the surface, a sensory challenge presenting during meal time. I’m so excited to share this episode with you and for you to dive into all things solid food with us!

Awesome! Your kiddos know what they are feeling, but now what? What do they do with those feelings? How do we support them through their feelings while building their ability to do so solo one day? Enter coping strategies. Wait? Aren’t they called coping mechanisms, Alyssa? Aha, yes, there are coping mechanisms that help you feel calm again that are short-term fixes, but coping strategies are long-term, healthy choices. In this episode of Village Chatter, I guide you through how to build coping strategies, move from mechanisms into strategies, and why I think this is the most important and often most missed phase of emotion processing. You also get a sneak peek into the CEP Method!

Chiropractic care for kids?! Let me guess, you’re over there like oh heck no! I hear you, I was there too. I was scared, not really knowing what it looked like to adjust kiddos. Would you crack them? How do you even get them to lie on the table? What is the point? Isn’t it dangerous? I dove into all of these questions and more with Stacey on today’s episode. What I learned? Chiropractic care can help with ear infections, sensory processing, breastfeeding, gross motor development, and so much more. Dr. Stacey Dersham rocked my world with information about chiro care for kids and I know she will rock yours, too.

Homebirth?! What if something goes wrong?! Why would you even want to do that?! As a sexual assault survivor homebirth has always stood out to me as an option where I could know the people who would potentially be touching my body in a vulnerable emotional state. Tracy, or as the grammers may know her @knowingtracy share her path to homebirth-- her reality, her fears, her perspective as a black woman giving birth in America. Homebirth came with judgement, fear, and unsolicited advice from folks in her village, and Tracy described how she was able to navigate all that jazz to make a choice that felt right for her and her family. Cheers to this amazing woman for showing up and getting real, raw, and vulnerable with us today.

Peeing when you sneeze, cough, jump, or during any sudden movements? Yeah, it’s very common, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I hung out with Jamie Jones from PROnatal fitness in New York City to talk about the Pelvic Floor, Diastasis Recti, and how your breath can be a game changer. She went into the anatomy, what’s going on down there, and what you can do to build a strong, healthy pelvic floor before, during, and after pregnancy. Once postpartum, always postpartum, am I right, ladies?!

Let’s talk about sex, baby. Really though, let’s because this is a key component to SO MANY THINGS. Think, self love, body positivity, body awareness, reducing rape & sexual assault, reporting rape & sexual assault, reducing unwanted pregnancy, increasing female sexual pleasure (orgasms aren’t just for the dudes, y’all). When it comes to wrestling, rough and tumble play, and physical play in general, I had a lot of hesitations. I’ve seen it go awry and y’all know I’m all about teaching consent from infancy. Can we really teach kids to respect one another’s bodies when they’re throwing each other around? Will they notice the verbal AND non-verbal signs of someone who is not consenting? I had these and so many more questions for our gross motor guy, Ross Thompson. We dove into all things big body play and, let me tell ya, I learned so much from him. Ross, the co-host of the podcast Teaching with the Body in Mind, taught me all about the benefits of this play and how we actually teach consensual touch through it! I’m jazzed for you to tune into this one. I can’t wait for your feedback!

When was the last time you dove into conversation with a five year old? They are wise beings, and this one is no different.  Mabel Chew opened up about her experience with sleep consulting, on the receiving end that is. She shared what it was like to have new expectations set for a sleep routine, and how she adapted.  Mabel also went into feelings related to being five-- transitions to new schools or classrooms, expression through art. She is a spirited young gal who gave us her time and energy! Happy listening!

This was the most requested topic yet! Angela Garcia and I dove into gun play in early childhood.  To be honest, we entered this discussion with different perspectives on whether or not we should let kids play with toy/fake guns, and what the role of the adult is to teach children about the real implications that guns have on society. We had a raw, respectful conversation that changed my opinion on the matter. We discussed when gunplay changes from developmentally appropriate play to a coping mechanism or means to express emotions. Angela and I went into white privilege and how it factors into our approach to tiny humans and weapon play. This is a good one that you will not want to miss!  Head over to @seed.and.sew on Instagram to participate in the conversation and provide your feedback on this episode! So, mama of two, with a graduate degree in early childhood education, Jenna Chew, sat down with me to dive into this often uncomfortable topic.  We shared our experiences as well as what is developmentally appropriate. Our kids are growing up in a different world than we did. A more accepting world, and one with conversation we need to be prepared to have. Gender fluidity and identity is something many of us did not grow up talking about, but thankfully that has changed, and we need the language to evolve, too. One cannot know what it’s like to walk in another’s shoes.  We can have sympathy and empathy, but each path is unique. I want to raise children who are comfortable and confident advocating for themselves and others, who fight for equality across race, gender, socioeconomics, mental and physical ability, etc. In order to dive into how to address race in early childhood I brought in racial socialization expert, Dr Stevenson.  He and I dove into what our role is in talking about racial differences and realities, and how we can bring that conversation to the tiny humans. Dr Stevenson is brilliant, and has done research in the field for 30 years. This episode is so vital for moving forward together to support everyone on this journey. Holy moly, this woman is bringing SO much to the table. In this episode I get to dive into the world of occupational therapy, I know, I didn't really know what that was either, with Lori Goodrich. She has such a brilliant mind and does a fantastic job explaining the sensory system. I get to ask her my biggest questions on what is happening in those tiny human brains. I took all of your questions and fired them at her, too. She is one of those people I feel like I could talk with for hours because she just has so much knowledge to offer. This is an episode you will not want to miss! Check out www.seedandsew.org/podcast to connect with Lori and peep her recommendations. Happy listening! Music: https://www.bensound.com/

Wanna know the topic I get the most questions about what it comes to these little brains?! So many of you share your anecdotes looking for my advice and it really comes back to one answer: boundaries. Boundary setting is sooooo hard because we have to be consistent, even when we are tired, hungry, and solo parenting. The thing is, if we hold boundaries firm and consistently early on, then it makes a world of a difference not too far down the road. Tune in to hear what this really looks like day to day and how to enforce those boundaries, while providing strong emotional development support along the way. You've got this. It doesn't have to be this hard. I even have a free guide to boundaries for you. Head to seedandsew.org/podcast for all the goods. Music: https://www.bensound.com/

This taboo subject has long been practiced in secret. It comes with fear, judgement, and a lot of unknown. Well, this mama is here to break the silence. I get to talk with Kelsey McGrath about her experience with co-sleeping. She bought all the things, the crib, the gadgets; she was prepared to sleep in separate spaces, even separate beds, until parenthood came along and the reality looked a lot different. Kelsey finds herself co-sleeping with her 11 month old with no end in sight. Want to hear the nitty gritty? Tune in as we dive into honest conversation, getting vulnerable about everything from fears to intimacy. Wanna connect with Kelsey? Head over to www.seedandsew.org/podcast to find out how.
