Love is, clearly, a central theme to all of scripture. But what is it? In 1 Cor. 13, Paul lays out a beautiful picture of what we have received in Christ and what is to categorize our treatment of others.
Today we embark on a journey though the Fruit of the Spirit. As we read through Paul's words in Galations 5, none of us would sign up for a life characterized by the works of the flesh. Yet, this is exactly where so many of us find ourselves. We'll take our time looking at each fruit of the spirit and seeing how we can lean more into what the Spirit of God is offering us.
A lot is happening in our current time that causes people to ask, "is this the end of the world?" I have no idea. But I know that Peter tells us what to do when the end of all things is near. It's probably not what you expect.
After going through his book this summer, author Dan White Jr joined our small group to answer questions and take a deeper look into what it means to choose Love Over Fear. Whether you read the book or not, this conversation is sure to be an encouragement to you.
The part of our lives that people see can be dressed up and made to look the way we think it's supposed to look. But when Jesus talks about the wise and foolish man, he says the differences that lie beneath the surface make all the difference.
Jesus' words in Matthew 7:21-23 are a sobering warning. Even miraculous works done in Jesus' name will gain us access to the Kingdom of God. What then is Jesus looking for?
These final four teachings of Jesus are sobering. We can deceive ourselves into believing we are his true disciples without it being true. We must take intentional action to be living into our new lives in Christ.
We've been taught this principle since kindergarten, but how good are we at living it out?
Certainly you have prayed for something and not received that something before. Then you've come across verses, like Matthew 7:7-11, which seem to indicate that when we ask for anything in the Lord's name we will receive it. How do we reconcile the apparent conflict between our lived experience and the promise of Jesus himself?

In 2015, I remember telling Leah, my wife, that I was no a political atheist. I was determined to removed myself from politics all together. That didn't last long. But a few months after the 2016 election I picked up Jesus Untangled: Crucifying Our Politics to Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb by Keith Giles. This helped me to put politics in its proper place. I need not abandon it totally, but I need not put more hope, time, and energy into than is helpful.

We've taken a look at praying through scripture, praying other people's words, and now we look at praying without words. If prayer is a means to help us connect with the Spirit of God, we cannot just pray by speaking words. That's not how relationships work. We need to give room for the Spirit to reply.
I'm not sure when it happened, but there seems to be this prevailing thought that our prayers must be unique and spontaneous or else they don't count. Those types of prayers are great, but if that's the only way we pray we put undue pressure on ourselves and make ourselves and our emotions the center of our prayers.
