Oscar Scafidi is a teacher, travel writer and political risk consultant with a focus on Lusophone Africa. In 2016, he completed the first ever source-to-sea navigation of Angola's River Kwanza with his friend Alfy Weston.

In the final stage of the journey, Oscar and Alfy were detained by security forces, initially accused of spying on a hydroelectric installation, and then suspected of diamond smuggling. Oscar spoke to WHEN IT HITS THE FAN about the experience. Oscar's latest project is to write the first English-language guidebook to Tunisia to be published in nearly a decade. Lucy Shepherd is 29-year-old British explorer who has embarked on expeditions into some of the most formidable environments on Earth. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a council member of the Scientific Exploration Society, Lucy recently set off on her most ambitious expedition yet: crossing the entire Kanuku Mountains in Guyana, from east to west.

His journey so far has racked up 194 countries, travelling predominantly using public transport and crossing oceans by hitching rides on container ships. In this episode of When it hits the fan, we talk to ocean explorer Tim Taylor about a near-sinking of his research vessel while crossing the Gulf Stream between Havana, Cuba, and Key West, Florida.
Tim recently received the Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest civilian award from the US Navy, for his work on the Lost 52 Project which aims to locate the wrecks of WWII vessels - and the bodies of the sailors who lost their lives when they were sunk.

In this episode of When It Hits The Fan we chat to Kate Leeming. Kate is a record-breaking long-distance cyclist from Melbourne, Australia. In 2010, she became the first person to cycle an unbroken line from Africa's most westerly point to its most easterly point.
The expedition, known as Breaking the Cycle, took in 22,000km of the continent's toughest terrain - as well as an ambush from Ninja rebels in Congo-Brazzaville.

Ash first came to the public's attention when he trekked across Mongolia, solo and unsupported, in 2014. Two years later, he set his sights on Madagascar, becoming the first person to hike across the country via its eight highest peaks. And in 2020 he completed Mission Yangtze - following the 6,500km length of Asia's longest river.
