This summer most of the Gospel lessons are in the Gospel according to Saint Mark. These readings talk about Jesus’ teachings, His miracles, and His action-packed ministry. But each of the readings also has a “takeaway” from Jesus Himself! We’re focusing on these “red-letter” verses this summer.
This week there are actually two good candidates for a “red-letter" verse. In the first one, Jesus says “Everything is possible for someone who believes.” That’s a true statement, but maybe easy to explain and accept. The other one is harder to accept, because it goes against our nature - so that’s the one I’ve chosen to focus on. Here it is, from Mark chapter 29 - “This kind can come out only by prayer” – and especially the last three words, “Only by prayer.”

One of my favorite all-time quotes that doesn’t come from the Bible is this one, from a sweet and wonderful book called “The Little Prince”: “Here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Today we’ll hear three Bible readings that start with blindness of the eyes – but then help us to see Jesus with our hearts.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone, where you think you’re talking about one topic but the other person has an entirely different subject in mind? If you have, you know that the result can sometimes be hilarious, but other times downright frustrating. Our “red letter verse” for today comes out of exactly that kind of situation, a conversation between Jesus and His disciples that is about – well, what, exactly?

Just a couple of weeks ago we heard about a miracle Jesus did after He spent a long day teaching a crowd of 5000 people, when He fed them with five pita breads and a couple of fish. In this morning’s Gospel lesson we’ll hear about another miracle a lot like that one – this time, He feeds a crowd of 4000 people after He’s spent three days teaching them and working other miracles.

I’d bet that most pastors have had experiences like these: someone they haven’t seen for years runs into them coming out of a grocery store and starts confiding the pain of their deepest hurts and wounds. Or some random stranger turns to them in an elevator and asks them to pray for that stranger’s loved one who’s in trouble. In today’s Gospel lesson we’ll hear how Jesus responded in those encounters, with compassion and love and even power.

In Jesus’ day (as in ours), one of the lifestyle practices that set the Jews apart from everyone else in the world was their dietary laws - what God had said they could eat, and what God had forbidden them to eat. But in today’s Gospel lesson Jesus points out that even a person who strictly and carefully follows such a “holy” diet can still be a jerk - when they’re focused on themselves, and not on the people around them.

The ministry of Jesus was not all miracles, prayer, teaching His disciples, and long walks in the hill country of Galilee. Sometimes He was confronted by people who wanted to argue with Him, just so they could find something they could use against Him. But when their focus was on something trivial and unimportant, as it often was, Jesus redirected the confrontation to what really mattered. That’s the subject of today’s readings and sermon.

As the sun went down on the mountainside where Jesus did the miracle of the feeding of the 5000, Jesus sent the disciples on ahead to the next town while he stayed behind to pray; they were in a boat, and he was on the mountain. Soon the disciples found themselves in the dark, rowing against a stiff wind. Jesus surprised them by walking out to them on the water - and their reaction prompted an important lesson!

Not all of the Gospels (Matthew’s, Mark’s, Luke’s, and John’s) include every event in the life and ministry of Jesus (only Matthew’s and Luke’s tell the Christmas story, for instance). But all four Gospels include these three episodes in the ministry of Jesus - (1) His baptism at the beginning of His ministry; (2) the week that began with His entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and climaxed with His suffering, death, and resurrection; and (3) today’s Gospel lesson (this time, from Saint Mark’s Gospel), that tells about the miracle when Jesus fed more than 5000 people with a five loaves of bread and two fish.

Early in his earthly ministry, Jesus and his disciples stopped by for a visit in his hometown of Nazareth, and decided to go to the synagogue to worship. The worship leaders thought it would be good to invite Jesus to read one of the Scripture readings and make a few comments on it - but were they shocked at what he had to say! And was he ever surprised by their reaction! What would you do, if the same thing happened to you?

I don’t usually title my sermons, but today I made an exception - I’ve called this one “A Tale of Two Daughters.”
In the New Testament there are at least two outstanding, standard stories of restoration: Jesus’ reinstatement of Peter as one of the twelve disciples, and the parable of the Prodigal Son (I'll sketch them both briefly in the sermon). In today’s Gospel lesson (you can read it at Mark 5:21-43) we’ll witness two more outstanding stories of restoration - both centered around women!

On the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee is one of the nation of Israel’s National Parks, Kursi National Park. This is the area where Jesus may have performed the miracle in today’s Gospel lesson (Mark 5:1-20), when He commanded a legion of demons to leave a man they had been tormenting. The demons immediately infested a herd of pigs, who hurled themselves off a nearby cliff and were washed into the waters of Galilee.

On April 8 millions of people witnessed a total solar eclipse over the United States. An historical event, to be sure, but probably “life-changing” for only a few of those witnesses. But when Jesus rose from the dead, that was not only historical but “life-changing” for His disciples who saw Him in the flesh many times before He returned to heaven. And, their testimony has been life-changing for millions of others through the ages, who never had the opportunity to see Him in person. In this sermon, as in many, we’ll think about how.

When Jesus rose from the dead early on Easter Sunday, only Mary Magdalene saw him at the garden tomb. It wasn’t until the afternoon of that day that He showed Himself alive to two grieving disciples, and it wasn’t until the evening of that day that He showed Himself alive to the rest of the disciples - well, except for Thomas. It wasn’t until the next Sunday evening, when Jesus showed up to them again, that Thomas finally saw Him with his own eyes and believed the witness of the rest.

Today is Easter Sunday! On this day Christians say “The Lord is risen! He is risen indeed!”
When Jesus rose from the dead, His glorious body still bore the scars from the nails that pierced his hands and feet and nailed him to the cross. In the Forgiving Challenge earlier this year, we were reminded of the acronym “S.C.A.R.S.” that stands for Sin, Confession, Absolution, Restoration, and Sanctification. Good Friday (the day when Jesus was crucified) is the day of Absolution, when Jesus washed away all our sins with His death on the cross. Easter Sunday is the day of Restoration, because the empty tomb is not only the sign that God restored His Son to life after His death, but that He accepted the sacrifice of Jesus as more than enough payment for all our sins, restores us to life in His love, and will restore our bodies to bring us into heaven.

Today is Thursday in Holy Week. We also know it as Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday. “Maundy” comes from the same ancient word as “commandment.” It reminds us that on the night before His death on the cross, when Jesus ate the Passover meal with His disciples and transformed it into what we know as The Lord’s Supper, He commanded them to love one another and to celebrate this meal often through the ages, until He comes again in glory to take His people to heaven.

We started the “Serving Challenge” with Saint Paul’s words in his letter to the Philippians, “have the same mind as Christ.” Now that we’ve talked about attitude, availability, action, and ability, there’s one last aspect of our serving we need to consider: ambition. So think about what you wanted to grow up to be when you were a kid. Was that just wishful thinking, and your life didn’t exactly turn out that way? Or was it an ambition, and you worked hard and with focus to make that childhood dream come true? When and how a person decides to serve another person, or a cause, depends on several things. Whether that person is agreeable to serving the other person, or cause, for instance - that’s Attitude. Whether he or she has enough time on their schedule, or money in their bank account - that’s Availability. What she or he ultimately decides to do - that’s Action.
This week in the Serving Challenge we’ll think about Ability, and that asks us to consider quite a lot. What are you physically able to do? The letter R in the “Forgiving Challenge” acronymn (“SCARS” = Sin, Confession, Absolution, Restoration, Sanctification) is for Restoration. Restoration is an extremely important concept in the pattern of forgiving, but it often gets left out (even among Christians!) becaue we get obsessed with prescribing new behaviors for the forgiven person. This morning we’ll see just how important Restoration is - and thank God that He includes that concept when He forgives us!

Today we come to the center point of the “Forgiving Challenge” acronymn (“SCARS” = Sin, Confession, Absolution, Restoration, Sanctification) - A is for Absolution, which is another word for Forgiveness. When Jesus died on the cross He won for us full and complete forgiveness for all our sins. The word “Absolution” means all those sins have been completely washed away, and we’re able to start fresh with a clean slate. In fact, Martin Luther would say that even though we keep on piling up sins every day, because of the wonderful and super-abundant grace of God we can begin every single day with a clean slate! How great is that!

Have you ever been called “a chip off the old block”? When my parents and grandparents would say that, it meant that the person they were talking about resembled that person’s dad or mom in some way - not just in their appearance, but often in their mannerisms, their character, their behavior, and more. In today’s Scripture readings we’re invited to think about what this might mean - if you truly believe that God is “Our Father” (as Jesus taught us to pray), what is there in your life, actions, and character that might prompt someone to say that you are a “chip off the old block” - that is, our Father in heaven?

Here at Christ the King Lutheran Church, we’ve said we value Acceptance, Caring, Family, and Joy. We even have a diagram on our big bulletin board to remind us of these values. But in the two readings from God’s word that we’ll hear in this worship service, there are serious reminders that sometimes acceptance, even from God’s family, is hard to come by for people who may not have a sense of belonging elsewhere because others see them as strange or even damaged.

What frightens you the most? Not just what you imagine might happen sometime in the future, but what has you frightened right now? All right, if not now, then the last time you were frightened, what caused it? More importantly, where did you go for shelter? Where did you turn for relief? Martin Luther said that “a god means that from which we are to expect all good and to which we are to take refuge in all distress.” Who or what is that god when you are frightened? Today’s Gospel says that there is only one answer to that question - Jesus, the Son of God.

This morning’s Gospel lesson is about one day in the ministry of Jesus that begins with personal grief, people’s needs overwhelming his compassion, physical exhaustion, the hunger of the crowd and the timidity of the disciples - and one great miracle to bring the day to a close. Some days or weeks are like that for everyone in ministry; and when we look for that one great miracle to bring the day / week to a close, we find that miracle in Jesus Himself.

You’re probably aware that there are some preachers who always seem to be focused on social issues, and strenuously urge Christians to get involved on the front lines. Then there are other preachers who always seem to be determined to dig out other people’s sins so those people can repent. In today’s Scripture readings, we hear of at least one Christian who doesn’t need to be reminded of his sins - he just needs someone to remind him that Jesus loves even him. Have you ever noticed how quickly people form opinions on just about anything or anyone? And how sometimes, once they’ve formed that opinion, they’re willing to do battle with anyone who disagrees with them? On January 21, 1530, Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in Germany, invited the Imperial Diet (legislature) to meet in Augsburg, Germany, in order to discuss and decide “various important questions.” Dr. Martin Luther and others wrote a document that a large number of German rulers and other leaders presented at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530.
This “Augsburg Confession” was written in both German and Latin and contained 28 articles that set forward what the Lutherans believed, taught and confessed. For Lutherans then and ever since, the most critical article is number 4, which reads
“[Our churches also] teach that people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ’s sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. This faith God imputes for righteousness in His sight. Romans 3 and 4.”
June 25, 2023, the day I preached this sermon, was the 493rd anniversary of the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession.

In a recent Sunday comic strip, one character was seeing advertisements everywhere encouraging everyone to “be yourself.” His response to this was “The problem in the world is not that people aren’t being themselves! It’s that they are being themselves!” So what’s the alternative? Saint Paul’s advice is that we should be imitators of Christ - especially by being humble, as He was.

In the Jewish calendar, fifty days after the Passover was the festival of Pentecost (from the Greek “fifty”) - celebrating the first harvest of fields and gardens planted in the spring of the year. In the Christian calendar, Pentecost is the celebration of the Holy Spirit coming to Jesus’ disciples and filling them with courage, insight, the power to do miracles, and the entusiasm to go into the whole world and preach the Gospel to people everywhere. Today’s readings are about that first Pentecost, and our focus is on what that means for us in these days.

How would you describe “faith”? Does it seem to you like a feeling, an experience, a “warm place in your heart”? Does it seem more solid than that, like something you can touch, see, or describe? If you’re like me, the only first-hand experience you have with sheep are from visits to a petting zoo or the county fair, and you’ve probably never even met a real-life shepherd. And even if a person knows next to nothing about the details of Jesus’ life, or much of the Bible, for a lot of folks when Jesus said He is the Good Shepherd, those words somehow connect with something deep in our hearts and imaginations. Today in the church year we remember that Jesus and His disciples gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. During that meal Jesus gave them a new commandment - that they should love one another - and instituted a new covenant with them, sealed with the sacrifice of His own body and blood that are in the bread and wine that we eat and drink in the Lord’s Supper.

This is the service for the first Sunday in the season of Lent. In today’s Old Testament lesson we’ll hear how the devil tempted Adam and Eve, way back in the Garden of Eden; they sinnned, and that sin and the death that followed has been passed down to everyone throughout history. In today’s New Testament lesson we’ll hear how the devil tempted Jesus, too. The difference is that Jesus did NOT sin, and because of that He gives us the gift of eternal life with Him.

In the church season of Advent this year we thought about how Jesus came to us as the Child in Bethlehem’s manger to bring us grace, hope, healing, and peace. In our sinful world, it’s mostly people who win elections or have a lot of money that seem to have all the power. However, in our sinful world it is the Son of God who left His throne in heaven, became a human being, suffered every indignity that we can imagine - even the horrible, shameful death of cruicifixion - who truly has all the power in the world, and He uses that power to promise to each one who believes in Him “Truly I say to you, you will be with me in Paradise.”

In the calendar of the Jewish year, September 25 this year is Rosh Hashanah, the so-called “Jewish New Year.” It is the beginning of a ten-day period of reflection leading to repentance and culminating in the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur. Christians don’t observe these Jewish holidays, but we do have some important things to learn from them - that’s our focus this morning.

"Downsizing" seems to be an "in thing" these days. From garage sales to Marie Kondo, getting rid of things you don't want or need anymore seems to be all the rage. But did you know that Marie Kondo says that her method is partly inspired by the Shinto religion, where cleaning and organizing things properly can be a spiritual practice? To hear Jesus teach in today's Gospel, "downsizing" might be a spiritual practice for Christians, too, although for completely different reasons than Marie Kondo's.

Today is Palm Sunday, the last Sunday in the season of Lent and the day when we remember that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey while crowds cheered and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David!" - because they thought he would be some kind of king for them. That wasn't Jesus' plan at all, as we see on Good Friday and again on Easter Sunday.
Throughout this Holy Week we're taking some final looks at the Forgiving Challenge acronym "S.C.A.R.S." and how that pattern can help us think about the Lord's Supper on Thursday, Jesus' suffering and death on Friday, and His rising from the dead on Easter Sunday. On this Palm Sunday, though, we'll take the time to think about how the "S.C.A.R.S" pattern can help us think about our memory verse for the season of Lent, Luke 6:37-38 - “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

Today we're beginning the final week of the season of Lent and our 40-day exploration of "The Forgiving Challenge." The focus this week is on "Sanctification."
"Sanctification" means "the process of becoming holy." Sometimes people think that it's all about behaviors, but it's as much about the attitude that drives the behaviors. As the fifth unit in The Forgiving Challenge, we've waited until now to talk about behaviors because the Bible says that holiness is not the prerequisite for forgiveness and restoration (like, "you have to do things right in order to get God to forgive you") but it's the end result of everything God has done for you (like, "now that God has forgiven your sins and restored you to your rightful place in His love, here's how you can live as His child and heir"). We'll think about immigrants and athletes, and why "saint" isn't a word just for Christians who have died.

Today we're beginning the fourth full week of the season of Lent and our 40-day exploration of "The Forgiving Challenge." The focus this week is on "Restoration."
In the New Testament, the iconic parable of Restoration is Jesus' parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). It's a story about everything we've been talking about so far in "The Forgiving Challenge": Sin, Confession, Absolution, and now Restoration. It's also about the determination of the loving and welcoming father to be as "prodigal" (="wasteful") in his love for his children as his younger son was in his rebellious lifestyle. But it's also about that father's same determination to be loving and caring to the other son who sits in judgment over both his brother and his father. Spoiler alert! The story has no ending! It just leaves us to wonder how everything will work out - or if it simply recycles itself in different forms again and again throughout history.

We'll think about people that cannot experience the love and mercy of God the Father because they're so tied up by sin and Satan; and we'll think about how Jesus sets us free from sin through forgiveness so that we can set others free, too.

Today we're beginning the second full week of the season of Lent and our 40-day exploration of "The Forgiving Challenge." The focus this week is on "Confession."
We use the word "confession" two ways in the church, but they both have to do with telling the truth that we've learned from God's revelation to us in His Word.
The first kind of "confession" has to do with truth that God tells us about HImself in the Holy Scriptures. That truth is condensed and summarized in "confessions of faith" like the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed, the catechisms, and other documents like those gathered together in the Book of Concord.
The second kind of "confession" has to do with truth that God tells us about us - that the sin that we focused on last week infects all of His creation, including every one of us, to such an extent that the only way to deal with it fully and completely was through Jesus' death on the cross.

Last Sunday morning I slipped on some very treacherous ice and went down just outside the door into the church. Thank God that I came away with only a bruise on my left hip! But I thought later that sometimes in life, when we're not sure of our footing, or when we're unsteady on our feet, we like to have something outside ourself to hang on to - a handrail, a cane, or maybe a shopping cart. Whatever it is that gives us a sense of stability and safety, and ultimately comfort.
About two years into His earthly three-year ministry, Jesus took His disciples Peter, James, and John to the top of a mountain where, the Bible says, He was "transfigured" before them. His entire person became blinding white, like the light of the sun; Moses and Elijah were seen talking with Him; and the voice of God the Father spoke from heaven and said "This is my beloved Son; listen to Him." In today's sermon we'll consider the possibility that God intended this event to be a sort of a spiritual handrail for those disciples, for Jesus Himself - and for us.

Some of us seem to go through life with a lot of confidence / determination / daring, as if nothing can stop us. Others of us seem to go through life with hesitation and uncertainty. A certain amount of realistic humility is not a bad thing; but sometimes that humility can be a smokescreen. In today's Gospel lesson we'll hear how Jesus overcame His disciples' realistic humility with His own mercy for them and for many others - and we'll also see other places in history where God has done that for His people.

We go through life trying to live up to expectations, whether for good or for bad. Sometimes, they're the expectations others have of us: when you live up to them, the others are satisfied; and when you don't, they're sad or disappointed or angry. Sometimes, they're the expectations we have of ourselves: when you live up to them, you feel a sense of pride or satisfaction; when you don't, you feel said, angry at yourself, or maybe guilt and shame.
God told the prophet Ezekiel that the "shepherds" of His people didn't live up to His expectations, so He Himself determined He would be their "shepherd" - and in Jesus, He was. The good news for us is that since Jesus did everything that God expected of us, that God is "well-pleased" with Him, and that He shares that pleasure with us who are His children, we can relax into His love and not be anxious about our own guilty feelings or unmet expectations.

In today's Gospel lesson, Jesus goes to the synagogue in Capernaum on a Sabbath, where He meets a man afflicted by a "demon" or "impure spirit." The Old Testament lesson is part of the history of Saul, the first king of Israel, who was also tormented by a "harmful spirit." The Bible tells us the reason for Saul's affliction, but we don't know about the man in Capernaum. What we do know is that God was using the people - and the spirits! - in both Saul's life and in this man's life to bring them and those around them to a greater knowledge of His love for all people.

In today's worship we'll hear two readings that seem to be at opposite ends of a spectrum. The first is the famous "Love chapter" (I Cornithians 13), that you often hear at weddings. The second contains that difficult saying of Jesus, "love your enemies." People have difficult and often unrealistic understandings of these two sayings, largely because we don't have a good understanding of what the Bible means with the word "love." But since John the Apostle wrote "God is love," maybe we ought to begin there and see where these readings take us.

In general, when people hear the Word of God they can have three different responses. Some people just blow it off, toss it aside, and say "it doesn't have anything to say to me." Other people might be bothered by it, and their responses range a scale from anger on the one end to fear and trembling on the other. And there are still other people who hear the Word of God and receive it with joy. In today's readings we'll hear about two groups of people who either trembled in fear or responded with anger, while others encouraged them to receive it with joy.

Remember what it took to get your first drivers' license? And what it takes nowadays to renew one - especially if you want one of those TSA-compliant licenses? Imagine if you could get a "Family License", one that would allow anyone in your immediate family to drive on that license, without each person having to go through all the hassle of getting their own! The "righteousness of Christ" is a little like that - Jesus has done all the work to get God's righteousness for us, and through His baptism and ours He shares it with us. So what do we do with that gift? In today's Gospel lesson John the Baptist tells three different groups of people (and in turn, all of us) how we can use that gift in God-pleasing ways.

Last week we heard that "joy" in the Bible is the result of what happens when Jesus shows up on the scene - whether it's John the Baptist's joy that, even while he was in prison, he knew that his job as "best man" for Jesus the Bridegroom was complete, or our joy that, even while we're still here on earth, Jesus is in the process of taking us home to heaven to join Him, the angels, and those we love who are already there.
This week we'll hear that "joy" in the Bible results not only when Jesus shows up on the scene, but even when someone just hears the news that Jesus has come. We're getting closer to the big day - Christmas! The day the angels sang to the shepherds "To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior - Christ the Lord!" It's supposed to be a "message of great joy to all people" - but there are still a lot of people who can't see the joy. The struggles, sins, and problems of their lives are overwhelming and complex, and they just can't seem to see a light at the end of the tunnel. But the birth of Jesus tells us that, even if they can't see it yet, the light has come to lead them out of the tunnel, the valley of the shadow of darkness, into the waiting and loving arms of Jesus.

Last week's readings from God's Word acknowledged that even in the best of families there are still moments of tension, or seasons where the family seems to be more dysfunctional than otherwise. But we also see that even in these moments and seasons the hand and will of our loving Heavenly Father is still guiding His children, and bringing about His long-term intention of love for us and for all people even if, in the short term, it's hard to see. As we continue our month-long focus on Family as one of the things we value here at Christ the King, our readings from God's Word today look more at that long-term picture, and show us that even on the worst of days we might still catch glimpses of His incredible love.
