Listener FeedbackFrom CanPat:
So on last year’s episode where we sent in our New Year’s resolutions, I said I wanted to buy more Bitcoin. Andrew poo-pooed the idea of buying Bitcoin. This is the 12 month price index. Well I bought some this year but not nearly enough. How have your investments worked out?

  • Was Andrew right?

    • We didn’t know what would happen with interest rates, crypto when up when interest rates held
    • FTX had just collapsed and crypto was very unstable. We didn’t know what would happen to Sam Bankman Fried, or with SEC regulations
    • Do you invest in Crypto?

As expected, the Liberals will do everything they can to ban guns from legal gun owners while absolutely ignoring any meaningful action against habitual criminals.

Liberal gun control bill passes Senate, becomes law

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/liberal-gun-control-bill-passes-senate-becomes-law-1.6687992

  • Bill C-21 passed the Senate without changes on Thursday, becoming law on Friday.
  • The version that made it to the Senate was significantly expanded from what the federal government had initially tabled a year prior.
  • Bill C-21 passed by a vote of 60 to 24(opens in a new tab), and with applause in the upper chamber.
  • The legislation includes measures to:

    • Tighten gun laws to include “red flag” and “yellow flag” provisions related to a gun owner posing a risk to themselves or others;
    • Impose a “freeze” on the sale, purchase or transfer of handguns in Canada;
    • A prospective Criminal Code “technical definition” of what constitutes a prohibited assault-style firearm, meant to “cement in law” a permanent ban on future models once the bill comes into force; It would include a firearm that is not a handgun that discharges centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that was originally designed with a detachable magazine with a capacity of six cartridges or more.

However, the definition would cover only firearms designed and manufactured after the bill, known as C-21, comes into force. It would not affect the classification of existing firearms in the Canadian market, the government says.

  • A series of provisions meant to make it illegal to make or buy ghost guns and to combat firearms smuggling; and
  • Wording making clear the government’s intent to uphold Indigenous treaty rights.
  • The bill also includes a requirement for a parliamentary review of the technical definition five years after it comes into effect, while a series of other related measures are being advanced through regulations.
  • after six sitting months that included a dozen days of study at the Senate National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs Committee, where 66 witnesses were heard from(opens in a new tab), Bill C-21 passed the Senate without amendment.
  • Though, senators did submit several observations about the bill, including that the government should consider “additional policy measures,” to address outstanding concerns, such as implementing a Canada-wide database and data collection process regarding all gun-related injuries and death, and consulting further with sport shooters.

    • Witnesses emphasized that several potential harms associated with owning a firearm would not be fully

addressed by Bill C-21, including harms such as domestic violence and suicide. Consequently, the

committee recommends that the Government of Canada undertake careful analysis and consideration

of these potential harms, and develop comprehensive, tailored and integrated policy measures to be

implemented alongside Bill C-21.

  • The committee recommends that the Government of Canada, in consultation with suicide prevention

experts, consider whether information regarding mental health literacy, suicide and suicide prevention

– including firearms-specific information – should be included in Canadian Firearms Safety Courses.

  • The committee recommends that the Government of Canada immediately develop and implement a

Canada-wide database and data collection process regarding all gun-related injuries and deaths. This

database and data collection process should be developed in consultation with the medical community

most experienced in treating gunshot injuries and recording firearms-related deaths

  • The committee understands that Bill C-21 would create additional rules in relation to handguns.

Specifically, with some exceptions, new registration certificates for handguns would not be issued and

the transfer of handguns would be limited.

Witnesses made comments about the effects that Bill C-21 would have on the ability of handgun

owners to bequeath collectible handguns that have sentimental value to immediate family members.

For these owners, the results could include stress, anxiety and anger.

The committee encourages the Government of Canada to work with handgun owners to try to find

solutions that could address this issue while both preserving public safety and maintaining the spirit of

the legislation.

  • Witnesses expressed various views about the implementation of exceptions that would be granted to

handgun shooting sports that are Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. There is concern that members of

sport shooting organizations who fall outside of these defined terms will be unable to apply for an

exception to compete in their sport. The committee encourages the Government of Canada to consult

with all sports shooting stakeholders to ensure that regulations relating to Bill C-21 would guarantee

the continuity of handgun shooting sports that are Olympic and Paralympic disciplines in Canada, and

would ensure the existence of continued pathways for athletes of all skill levels to continue in these

Disciplines.

  • The committee is aware that Bill C-21 would include a new definition for the term “prohibited firearm”

in subsection 84(1) of the Criminal Code, with this proposed change designed to restrict certain new

semi-automatic centre-fire firearms. There would be no impact on firearm models created before the

proposed definition comes into force. Having heard Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions

and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic Leblanc’s comments about the re-establishment of the

Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee, the committee wishes to express its support for a

comprehensive ban on “assault-style firearms” that are not reasonable for use when hunting. From that

perspective, the committee recommends that the Government of Canada expeditiously proceed, by

order in council, to ban existing assault-style firearms.

  • Given the total absence of meaningful consultations, the government drafted a bill which will have no

meaningful impact on firearms crime in Canada.

Apart from certain measures, such as provisions related to ghost guns and the sharing of information

that may facilitate 3D firearms printing, no components of Bill C-21 tackle the growing problem of gun

crime in Canadian communities. Instead, the entire focus of the bill is on firearms owners who hold a

restricted firearms licence and who are engaged in varied shooting sports or collecting.

The government claims that, by banning the sale and purchase of legal handguns, it will reduce the

supply of such firearms in Canada and thereby reduce the possibility that these particular firearms

could be misused or stolen.

There is no evidence to support this assertion. Witnesses who appeared before our committee

repeatedly stated that nearly all handguns that are criminally used in Canada are smuggled firearms.

  • “By removing the ability to enter the sport, new shooters are struggling to acquire the equipment to participate. Bill C-21 is requiring athletes to prove they are training for the Olympics before they even start into the event. It makes no sense. Athletes rarely start off a new sport with the sole purpose of making the Olympics. Sport is intended to promote activity for life. Why are we putting such an additional pressure on the shooting sports only to produce Olympians? Participation in other shooting sports provides an avenue to enter into the International Shooting Sport Federation, the ISSF events. It covers a greater opportunity for competition than just Olympic events. There are more events within the ISSF World Championships that are contested at the world games. Bill C-21 removes the option to compete at an international competition just because the Olympic Games has now a limited subset of what the ISSF covers.”

News Federal government to announce details of dental insurance plan

https://www.cp24.com/news/federal-government-to-announce-details-of-dental-insurance-plan-1.6681990

  • The federal government hopes to avoid gumming up the works of its new dental-insurance plan by gradually phasing in enrolment over the course of the next year
  • Seniors over the age of 87 will be the first cohort to be able to apply to join a new federal dental-insurance plan.
  • It will be slowly expanded over the course of 2024 to include all qualifying seniors, children under the age of 18 and people with disabilities.
  • Holland announced the rollout of the program, which is currently budgeted to cost $13 billion over the next five years
  • The program is aimed at people with an annual household income under $90,000 who don’t have access to private insurance.
  • Coverage will include preventive, diagnostic, restorative and surgical services — including X-rays, fillings, root canal treatments and dentures, among others
  • Once eligibility is expanded to all qualifying Canadian residents in 2025, it will be the government’s largest social program.
  • The insurance plan is a key pillar in the Liberal’s supply-and-confidence deal with the New Democrats to secure the opposition party’s support on key votes.

‘I’m so broken’: Grieving family speaks out after B.C. cancer patient awaiting treatment chooses MAID

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/i-m-so-broken-grieving-family-speaks-out-after-b-c-cancer-patient-awaiting-treatment-chooses-maid-1.6675742

  • Kathleen Carmichael says B.C.’s health-care system let her family down. Her partner, Dan Quayle, opted for a medically assisted death It was a choice he made after waiting for chemotherapy and treatment that didn’t come fast enough.
  • The oncologist would come in and say, ‘We’re pretty backlogged right now so hang in there
  • But Quayle ran out of time. The 52-year-old grandfather – described as jolly, big-hearted and playful – died on Nov. 24.
  • Quayle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer months after first feeling ill.
  • While he waited for treatment, his health declined, which led him to choose MAID
  • The family’s pain emerges as numbers reported on radiation therapy reveal that only 75 per cent of patients in B.C. are receiving it within the recommended 28-day benchmark — lower than the 77 per cent in May when the province started sending patients to the U.S. for radiation due to long waits in B.C.
  • The province has hired 61 oncologists and 27 radiation therapists since April. The health minister says those waiting longer than the benchmarks for radiation are being prioritized. “Those numbers — the people waiting 28 days are going to fall — because there are fewer people now on the waitlist,” said Dix Tuesday.

Here’s how much more it’s expected to cost to feed a family of 4 in Canada next year

https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/here-s-how-much-more-it-s-expected-to-cost-to-feed-a-family-of-4-in-canada-next-year-1.6675985

  • In 2022, a report estimated the overall food price increases would be between five to seven per cent — the latest data from Statistics Canada pegs the food inflation rate at 5.9 per cent.
  • In the latest edition of the annual report, the authors believe the overall rate of inflation will be lower in 2024, falling to somewhere between 2.5 and 4.5 per cent.
  • According to Charlebois, things are “much calmer now,” which could result in more deals and potentially some price wars between the big grocers.
  • “Margins are going to be everything,” he said. “And because consumers don’t have any money now, grocers will be fighting for our business.”
  • Over the next year, Charlebois believes grocery stores will be offering more incentives to consumers like loyalty programs and deals to entice people.
  • One of the tactics used is selling items at a loss, which brings the customer through the grocer’s doors, but then the store would increase the prices for other items, hoping the consumer will buy those as well, he explained.

One way to save money on groceries… no more cantaloupes

Death toll rises to five in cantaloupe salmonella outbreak, as cases almost double

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/death-toll-rises-to-five-in-cantaloupe-salmonella-outbreak-as-cases-almost-double-1.6678564

  • Five people have died in a salmonella outbreak linked to Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes sold in six provinces.
  • The Public Health Agency of Canada says 129 people have been confirmed with salmonella linked to the outbreak, almost double the number at the last update on Dec. 1, when a single death had been recorded.
  • There are also 17 cases in Ontario, 15 in British Columbia, and two each in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • The agency says 45 per cent of those who became ill were aged 65 and older while more than a third were children five and younger. people became sick between mid-October and mid-November, and 44 have been hospitalized People who are infected with salmonella bacteria can spread salmonella to other people several days to several weeks after they have become infected

Widow takes Ontario police to court over declaration misconduct in her husband’s death was ‘not serious’

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/widow-takes-ontario-police-to-court-over-declaration-misconduct-in-her-husband-s-death-was-not-serious-1.6681891

  • A grieving widow is taking the Ontario Provincial Police to court as she challenges its decision to call the misconduct of an officer that contributed to her husband’s death “not of a serious nature” – a decision that denied her access to a public hearing in the case.
  • A CTV News investigation shows that the OPP has declared misconduct by its own officers not serious about 80 per cent of the time in the last five years, and sends identical paragraphs that don’t explain its reasoning in cases from neglect of duty to unlawful use of force.
  • Courtney D’Arthenay said she couldn’t believe she received a boilerplate letter informing her that the OPP would resolve her complaint without a hearing after an officer accidentally struck and killed her husband Tyler Dorzyk while speeding near Barrie in 2020.

B.C. doctor fired for refusing COVID-19 shot loses bid to get hospital privileges back

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/theresa-szezepaniak-bc-hospital-appeal-board-covid-vaccine-1.7046988

  • Dr. Theresa Szezepaniak was fired from Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops in 2021
  • The Hospital Appeal Board has found that Dr. Theresa Szezepaniak’s refusal of the shot in 2021 amounted to neglect of her obligations as a hospitalist at Royal Inland Hospital, and the decision to take action on her privileges was appropriate.
  • “The appellant [Szezepaniak] says that IH is required to respect her exercise of her Charter rights,” an appeal board panel wrote in a Nov. 20 decision.
  • “The implication is that in order to respect her decision IH must not take any steps that hold the appellant accountable for the consequences of that decision. Having the right to make a decision, and your right to do so acknowledged, or respected, is not the same as being held responsible for the consequences.”
  • in other words, the decision says, Interior Health didn’t challenge Szezekpaniak’s right to refuse the vaccine, but it did hold her accountable for the fact that choice left her unable to work under provincial law.

News A fitting humiliation for the Liberals, and for Canada

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/chris-selley-a-fitting-humiliation-for-the-liberals-and-for-canada

  • bozo Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen had accused Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre of not applauding Zelenskyy’s address in the House of Commons lustily enough
  • To capture video evidence of Poilievre’s alleged lack of enthusiasm, Gerretsen naturally had to cease clapping altogether, which was inevitably caught on camera by someone else. It was perhaps the ultimate example of the old adage that foreign policy in Canada is 100 per cent for domestic consumption
  • Government House Leader Karina Gould sought (and did not receive) unanimous consent to expunge the entire Hunka episode from the official history
  • “Get caught lionizing someone who fought for Hitler … and channel Stalin in response”
  • Many seemed baffled by Gould’s proposal to wipe the record clean, but it seems pretty obvious to me what the Liberals had in mind: They’re so hopelessly shipwrecked up their own backsides that they actually thought they might productively accuse the Conservatives of being pro-Nazi for not agreeing to expunge the record. Or at least, they thought that was worth a try, at the cost of Gould’s reputation

Poland’s education minister says he’s ‘taken steps’ to extradite Yaroslav Hunka

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/yaroslav-hunka-poland-minister-extradite-1.6978266

  • Poland’s education minister says he has “taken steps” to effect the extradition to Poland of Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian Canadian, after it emerged that the veteran served in the Nazi SS Galizien formation during the Second World War.
  • Robert Currie, a law professor at Dalhousie University and an expert in extradition law, told CBC News Canada does not have a formal extradition agreement with Poland. “That doesn’t prevent extradition. It just makes it a matter of more paperwork between the two governments,” he said.Currie said Canada and Poland can agree to extradition in Hunka’s case. Before that transfer could happen, he added, Poland would have to present evidence that Hunka committed a crime that Canada would recognize — he could not be extradited on the basis of his membership in the Nazi SS Galizien formation.”We do not have crimes of association other than organized crime type-offences which are very, very specialized,” he said.
  • Other challenges to extradition in Hunka’s case, Currie said, include his advanced age and the question of whether he is fit to stand trial. Hunka could also challenge any extradition in court, a process that could take years.
  • The Netherlands refused an extradition request from Poland in 2020, citing concerns that judges in that country were not sufficiently independent of the Polish government. “When you have the government interfering with the courts, that gives the appearance of the potential for a fair trial being endangered, and that is an argument that a person can make [to avoid extradition],” Currie said.

B.C. Conservative leader under fire for likening teaching of sexuality, gender to residential schools

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/john-rustad-sept-30-tweet-1.6984159

  • John Rustad, MLA for Nechako Lakes, acknowledged the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in a Sept. 30 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.”Today we remember what happens when the Canadian government thinks it’s better at raising children than parents,” read Rustad’s post on Saturday, which was also shared on his party’s official Facebook page.”I will always stand with parents.”
  • My tweet was not about the children and the impact that had on on the Indigenous people,” said Rustad, a former minister of Aboriginal affairs and reconciliation with the B.C. Liberals, the party now known as B.C. United. “What happened to Indigenous people is obviously a very stark reminder of what happens when government does decide to interfere with the raising of children. And it’s a very tragic.”But in no way was I trying to compare students today to what students went through, but rather that what parents went through, and parents having their rights taken away, is not right at any level.”

Who started calling residential school burial sites mass graves?

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/first-nations-graves

  • In the spring of 2021, a series of ground-penetrating radar surveys near the sites of former Indian Residential Schools uncovered anomalies that appeared to be consistent with children’s graves. In the nationwide protests that followed, more than 60 Canadian churches were vandalized or destroyed, and statues were pulled down in virtually every major city.
  • The surveys would help spawn a new holiday, Truth and Reconciliation Day, prompt an official visit by Pope Francis and result in Canadian flags being kept at half-mast for a record-breaking five consecutive months.
  • And then, just last month, an excavation at the Pine Creek Residential School in Manitoba determined that 14 “anomalies” suspected to be children’s graves were actually nothing. To date, of the hundreds of suspected graves identified starting in 2021, Pine Creek is the only one that has been followed up with an archeological dig.
  • The preliminary claims of First Nations performing the surveys did not state that these were “mass graves,” that they were deliberately concealed or that they were the result of homicide. At least in the beginning, the claims of “mass graves” or mass murder would stem mostly from foreign news outlets.
  • When the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan announced a survey showing 751 unmarked graves near the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School, Chief Cadmus Delorme was careful to say they were not a mass grave. Rather, these were plots within a larger Catholic cemetery whose headstones Delorme said had been removed by Catholic authorities. “This is not a mass grave site. These are unmarked graves,” he said.

Trudeau ‘trying to crush free speech’ with new podcast rules: Musk

  • “Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada,” the owner of X posted on his social-media site in a reply to journalist Glenn Greenwald. “Shameful.”
  • Greenwald, the co-founder of The Intercept, said in his post to X that Canada is now “armed with one of the world’s most repressive online censorship schemes.”
  • The two were responding to changes announced on Friday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunication Commission, which plans to “modernize Canada’s broadcasting framework and ensure online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content.”
  • The two were responding to changes announced on Friday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunication Commission, which plans to “modernize Canada’s broadcasting framework and ensure online streaming services make meaningful contributions to Canadian and Indigenous content.”
  • Among the changes are requiring certain streaming services to provide information about their activities and setting conditions for streaming services to operate in Canada, including providing details about their content and subscribership.
  • The second change is already in effect, the CRTC said on its website, while companies that need to provide information about their activities must do so by Nov. 28.

Trudeau cuts defence spending to fund socialist pet projects

https://nationalpost.com/opinion/trudeau-cuts-defence-spending-to-fund-socialist-pet-projects

  • In July, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with their NATO allies in Vilnius, Lithuania, where they pledged their “enduring commitment to invest at least two per cent of our gross domestic product (GDP) annually on defence,” noting that, “in many cases, expenditure beyond two per cent of GDP will be needed in order to remedy existing shortfalls and meet the requirements across all domains arising from a more contested security order.”
  • A few months before reaffirming his commitment to it at the summit, Trudeau reportedly told NATO members behind closed doors that Canada would never spend two per cent of GDP on defence. And indeed, late last week, we learned that his Liberal government is looking to cut $1 billion from the annual defence budget, which would further reduce the measly 1.3 per cent of GDP this country spent on defence last year.
  • Speaking in front of a parliamentary committee on Thursday, Defence Minister Bill Blair said that, “The fiscal environment in Canada right now requires that when we are spending Canadian taxpayers dollars … we do it carefully and thoughtfully.” And he’s absolutely right. But it seems a little rich from a government that can’t seem to go a week without announcing millions in funding for high-speed internet in some remote part of the country or to virtue-signal for the woke cause du jour, and wastes tens of billions on its fruitless quest to forcibly decarbonize the economy.
  • Having a military that’s capable of defending your country’s sovereignty may not seem to be “creating public value for Canadians,” as Blair suggested government expenditures should be, and may not be a vote-getter like dental or child care, two areas Treasury Board President Anita Anand insinuated the government needs to find savings in order to fund.

Advocates say Ontario minimum wage increase to $16.55 an hour still not a living wage

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/advocates-say-ontario-minimum-wage-increase-to-16-55-an-hour-still-not-a-living-wage

  • Ontario’s minimum wage rises today to $16.55 an hour.
  • The increase is tied to inflation, and is up 6.8 per cent from the previous rate of $15.50 an hour.
  • Labour advocates and opposition critics have said Ontario should introduce a $20 minimum wage
  • The Ontario Living Wage Network says a living wage in the Greater Toronto Area is around $23 an hour.

Governor-General Mary Simon apologizes for Waffen-SS veteran’s 1987 Order of Canada appointment

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-governor-general-mary-simon-apologizes-for-waffen-ss-veterans-1987/

  • Mr. Savaryn, a former chancellor of the University of Alberta, was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1987 by governor-general Jeanne Sauvé. Previous governor-generals also awarded him Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals in 2002 and 2012.
  • Governor-General Mary Simon has apologized for the appointment to the Order of Canada of Peter Savaryn, a veteran who served in the same Nazi-led Waffen-SS division as Yaroslav Hunka. The statement apologized for the distress his appointment to the Order of Canada may have caused. It said her office is also probing his Jubilee medals, which are awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to the country.
  • “It is with deep regret that we acknowledge that Mr. Peter Savaryn was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1987, and we express our sincere apology to Canadians for any distress or pain his appointment may have caused,” the office said in a statement, adding that it had elapsed on his death in 2017. “The Chancellery is committed to working with Canadians to ensure our honours system is reflective of Canadian values.”
  • Separately, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters Wednesday that senior public servants were looking into publishing the full report of the Deschênes Commission, which examined claims that Canada was playing host to war criminals.
  • “We have made sure that there are top public servants who are looking very carefully into the issue, including digging into the archives, and they’re going to make recommendations to the relevant ministers,” the Prime Minister said.
  • Savaryn was a leading Progressive Conservative in Alberta and prominent member of Edmonton’s Ukrainian community who championed multiculturalism and played a key role in establishing schools with Ukrainian-language instruction. He also set up the Edmonton branch of the Ukrainian scout group Plast, whose participants included Chrystia Freeland, now Deputy Prime Minister.
  • In a 2013 interview with the newspaper Ukrainian Weekly, Ms. Freeland recalled attending the youth group there. “Plast was a very important part of my life growing up,” she said. “I grew up in a Ukrainian community and was active in Plast.”

University of Alberta facing calls to return thousands more in donations connected to Waffen SS veterans

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-university-of-alberta-facing-calls-to-return-thousands-more-in/

  • The University of Alberta says it is reviewing other donations it has received after returning $30,000 from the family of Yaroslav Hunka
  • The university is facing calls to return hundreds of thousands of dollars in endowments in the names of Ukrainians linked to the Waffen SS. They include an endowment of about $430,000 in the name of Volodymyr Kubijovych, who played a key role in the SS unit’s establishment in 1943.
  • Per Anders Rudling, an expert in the Waffen SS Galicia division, who studied at the University of Alberta, said for the sake of “consistency” the university should return other donations from SS veterans to fund Ukrainian studies
  • He said it did not make sense just to return $30,000 from the family of Mr. Hunka, who was a teenager at the time he volunteered to fight with the Waffen SS division, while keeping money from more senior figures.
  • University of Alberta spokesman Michael Brown said last week it has decided to “close the endowment fund that existed in Mr. Hunka’s name and return the funds to the donor.” “We are currently reviewing other endowments, and our general naming policies and procedures, including those for endowments, to ensure alignment with our values,” he said in a statement.
  • the university should also return donations in the names of other former Waffen SS veterans, including $50,000 from the family of Levko Babij. His donation was designed to fund the study of 20th-century Ukrainian history, especially during the Second World War. Prof. Rudling said Mr. Babij was a former president of the Ukrainian veterans association.
  • The university also received a $15,000 donation from Roman Kolisnyk, who was an officer with the rank of untersturmführer in the Galicia Waffen SS division, and editor of the journal of the Ukrainian Waffen SS veterans. After the war he settled in Toronto. Established in 2011 by Mr. Kolisnyk, the fund is worth around $100,900 and supports translations and publications of Ukrainian literary works, memoirs and diaries.
  • The university’s Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, which their donations helped fund, refers in past newsletters to their service with the SS Galicia division.
  • Veterans of the SS regiment have also held positions at the University of Alberta. They include Peter Savaryn, who became its chancellor. In 1987
  • Mr. Savaryn is one of around 12 former members of the Nazi-led Waffen-SS Galicia division with endowments, awards and donations in their name at the university, according to Dr. Rudling.
  • The university’s Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies has received endowments and donations worth over $1-million from Ukrainians who served in the Waffen-SS Galicia division or who helped set it up, according to research by professor Per Anders Rudling of Lund university, Sweden, an expert on the division.

Historical context stuff

Mr. Savaryn’s obituary in the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian studies newsletter explained how as a 17-year-old he joined the division, after being summoned with his brother by his father “when Hitler’s drive to the East faltered in 1943 and the Soviet military began its relentless counter-offensive.” His father told him he was left with two options: “either ‘go to the woods’ to join the Ukrainian partisans fighting the Germans Poles and Soviets” or enlist in the Galicia division.

In the decades after the Second World War the division’s veterans debated whether creation of the formation had been a mistake, whether their idea of breaking from the Germans at the war’s end and becoming the core of a Ukrainian army had been a fantasy, and whether they had in fact been a German and not a Ukrainian army,

The Galicia division was set up by Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, from Ukrainian volunteers after the German defeat at the battle of Stalingrad, to try to stem the Soviet advance. Soldiers swore an oath to Hitler and the division’s newspaper was infused with antisemitic and National Socialist propaganda. An edition days before the soldiers’ surrender in 1945 claimed Jews were plundering Ukraine.

‘Disinvitation from École Polytechnique group sent Trudeau government into damage control mode

https://nationalpost.com/news/ecole-polytechnique-group-sent-trudeau-into-damage-control

  • Quebec-based anti-gun group declaring it would disinvite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from the annual commemoration of a 1989 mass shooting
  • sent several officials within the Public Safety Ministry into damage-control mode looking for ways to respond, documents released under access-to-information show. The emails reveal that government staffers reacted with concern to news coverage of a March 2021 letter sent to Trudeau
  • The letter and subsequent coverage expressed the group’s anger over Bill C-21, which the group described as “lamentable.”
  • In a March 18 French-language article published by Radio-Canada, PolySeSouvient accused Trudeau of “abandoning” and “betraying” victims of Canadian gun violence over the government’s announcement of a voluntary “buy back” program for certain firearms, instead of mandatory confiscation, which PolySeSouvient had demanded.
  • The letter to Trudeau from the group, translated from French, had said: “If you continue with this bill, we will never again welcome you alongside us when we mourn the death of our daughters, sisters and friends during the annual commemorations.”
  • Later that year, the Trudeau government adjusted its policy so that its initial voluntary buy back became the mandatory confiscation the group had been demanding. It is in the process of becoming law.
  • That letter and attached fact sheet — claimed that not going all-in on confiscating firearms from licensed owners was a reversal of previous election promises vowing to “initiate a buyback program for all assault weapons,” and blamed Canada’s “gun lobby” for fomenting trepidation over supposed failures in New Zealand’s firearm confiscations following the 2019 Christchurch shootings in New Zealand. It also refuted criticisms that the confiscation would adversely impact First Nations people, as they would be given a special amnesty of two years to replace their newly banned firearms.
  • “Under a volunteer buyback program, countless fully functional assault weapons would remain in circulation, which could be stolen or used by their owners for violent purposes,” read the letter’s attached note.

Ontario NDP removes Sarah Jama from caucus after Israel-Hamas comments

https://globalnews.ca/news/10042820/ontario-ndp-removes-sarah-jama/

  • Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles says she has removed rookie legislator Sarah Jama from caucus.
  • Stiles says the member for Hamilton Centre, who has been under fire for comments about the Israel-Hamas conflict, made what Stiles calls “a number of unilateral actions” that have undermined the party’s collective work and broken the trust of her colleagues.
  • Jama spoke this morning in the legislature against a motion to censure her for a statement she made on the conflict between Israel and Hamas. She said Premier Doug Ford’s government is targeting her to distract from its own scandals, and also said that governments and institutions in Canada are trying to use their voice and weight to silence people who support Palestinians.
  • The Progressive Conservative motion would effectively silence Jama in the legislature and calls on the Speaker not to recognize her in the House until she retracts her original statement and apologizes again.Jama’s original statement, on social media, decried “the generations long occupation of Palestine” without mentioning the attack by Hamas militants on Israeli civilians.

Poilievre gets international attention for apple-eating viral moment

China linked to propaganda campaign targeting Trudeau, Poilievre, says Global Affairs

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/china-spamouflage-mps-1.7005066

  • The Chinese government likely was behind a “spamouflage” disinformation campaign targeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and other MPs in August and September, says Global Affairs Canada.
  • A “spamouflage” campaign is one which uses a network of new or hijacked social media accounts to post propaganda messages across various platforms, such as Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Medium, Reddit, TikTok and LinkedIn.
  • The department’s Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), which was set up to monitor foreign state-sponsored disinformation efforts, said the campaign was “connected to the People’s Republic of China” and was meant to curb criticism of the communist regime.
  • According to a report released Monday morning, the propaganda campaign began in August and targeted dozens of MPs from across the political spectrum.
  • An email from GAC officials to the affected MPs said 47 of them from across Canada were targeted. The email advised MPs on how to protect themselves from foreign interference and assured them the campaign did not present a threat to their safety.

RE: Unacceptable Views

I just wanted to say that your podcast spreads disinformation and you all have mysogynist and unacceptable views. I do enjoy Pierre’s drunk ramblings though.
Also a friendly reminder…. Please!

Just. Get. Vaccinated.

I am on my 10th booster already.

Yours truly,

J. Trudeau

From: Kris
RE: 382
Hello Patriots!

You left me no choice but to write this. I have to say that I was pretty sad after the last episode (382) and the discussion about healthcare.

I respect everyone’s right to own opinions.

I acknowledge that you may be a patriot and have completely different views on the best way to express it.

By definition, patriotism is about a country, what’s best for it. A country as a whole. So about the best outcome for the majority, not some individuals or everyone.

What I heard in the discussion about healthcare was troubling to me because I heard a lot of socialist ideas. The excuse was that it would be too difficult to do some things while you agreed that those would be the right things to do. It is the role of the family to support directly those who need help. Government should offer bare minimum survival. Charity diluting limited resources is not in the best long-term interest of anyone.

Indeed, sometimes doing the right thing is tough. And some people may suffer as a result. But if the outcome is the best option for the country, for the majority, making it stronger at the end and offering the best prospects to succeed and prosper long-term, that’s the way to go.

You start each show with “Don’t be a communist”. Communism or socialism proved one thing over the years. A race to the lowest common denominator. Majority is equally poor and is treated badly while a very small group has a great life. You may still love your country and be willing to die for it, even in communism, but I don’t think it is the vision you have.

Happy to be proven wrong and make a custom t-shirt as a penalty

Kris

PS. Get a proper talking stick for everyone…

    • Varusteala Remote Military March (presumed last weekend in April), 50km Recon Division
    • 5km run in 30 minutes
  • Skills
    • Win an ORA Precision Rifle Match
    • Win an ORA Service Rifle Match
    • Win an ORA Service Pistol Match

Substitute – My goal is to still be alive to celebrate another new year, birthdays of everyone in the family along the way. The ticker is not doing very well, may need to go under the knife for bypass surgery or more stents if possible. Carpe diem my friends!

Howling Coyote – I’m looking at more rucking, more sandbag work, hitting 6 plates (total) for squats, getting another stripe on my blue belt, and just being more deliberate and mindful of quality time with family. Oh and I really want to figure how we can get a wood stove insert for our fireplace and get a good wood supply

Better Andrew – Secure a good foothold of a future for my kids, rid myself of the last of my degeneracy, continue to slowly rid myself of big tech, continue to get more fit, improve my fighting position by a significant amount, actually reload my damn ammo, shoot said ammo, brew more alcohol, do more hard things with my friends and maybe move homes.

Ian from NH – shoot to 500 yards, get my ham license, have my wife finally carry a firearm, turn my gardening up to level 11, buy NODs, keep on ruckin’ and be the Post-Apocalyptic warlord i was always memt to be.

Dariouskater – I dont really do new years resolutions but i have 2 goals this year. Accurately shoot out to 1000 yards with a 308 consistently.

And get in better physical shape.

MrH – Goals for 2023 would be to focus on what’s important. To be more efficient and productive in my working hours. When I’m not working I’d like to be decluttering our home, shooting and hunting, and gathering for dinners with friends and their familes nore often. Would like to end the year a little leaner at the same weight which requires real discipline across all areas of life. Taking my sleep more seriously will be key.

CanPat777 – Goals for 2023. I just moved so I have a lot of work to turn the house into a compound. Amateur radio license. Spend more time outdoors with the children. Improve my skill level with my firearms. Buy more Bitcoin.

From: Eric
RE: A few musings from the week, with included movie moments.

Good afternoon panel!

A couple of things from the past week.

Last weekend, I had a listener meetup with Liz and friends to try my hand at pheasant hunting Great to meet up with like minded individuals. Had a great day, but no luck with the hunt.

On my way to and from the hunting area, I thought that I would expand my listening library and take in some of the CCFR podcast episodes. After listening to 4 episodes, I believe that I now have a better understanding of Rod Giltaca. Or not. It seems to me that one of the favourite subjects to speak on is “Things I have done”. I am sure that the CCFR as an organization does good work on behalf of Canadian firearms owners, but to paraphrase Adhemar from the movie “A Knight’s Tale”, the podcast has been weighed, has been measured, and has been found wanting. Frankly, I expected a little more. Thoughts on that?

Secondly, another appropriate movie reference. My utter contempt and loathing for all things federal government related has been “turned up to 11”, after the shenanigans pulled with C21 this past week. Clearly the idiots in Ottawa do not know the difference between an “amendment” and a “complete rewrite”! (FYI, the movie was “This is Spinal Tap”, if you were not aware)

Looking forward to this week’s discussion!

Best Regards,

Eric

From: Gerry

RE: Amend This Episode

Hello, I appreciate the effort and content you put in the podcasts, but the Amend This episode will be my last.

Hearing a person refer to firearms as “weapons of mass destruction” and stating “you have the right to hunt even though you don’t need to” in this episode is counter productive and divisive to people who value freedom.

The ability to take care of yourself or your family whether it be fishing, hunting or growing food is an essential skill worth learning and may be useful given the situation we face.

Marksmanship and accuracy are worthwhile and respectable pursuits that should join the sport shooting and hunting communities. The aforementioned commentary is neither accurate or respectable.

Thank you for the past episodes and I wish you the best in future endeavours.

Gerry

-Only one firearm originated in Ontario. It was determined to have been stolen during a break-and-enter in 2021.

-260 charges against the six suspects

-One suspect, 27-year-old Syed Mohammed Ali Zaidi, is also facing additional charges in relation to a shooting that took place inside Bar Karma near Queen and Portland streets on Oct. 19, 2021.

-three AK-type rifles, one of which was loaded with 61 rounds of ammunition,” as well as 15 “AR-15 type carbine style rifles.”

-Toronto Mayor John Tory called it an “excellent piece of police work.”

But he said it is a reminder of the work that needs to be done to reduce the flows of guns that come into Canada via the U.S. border.

“I think we can’t rely on local police services to find the people trafficking these guns. That means they’re already here and the best place to cut this off is at the border, to stop the guns from coming across from the US, which is where they’re coming from,” he said. “Perhaps we could work with the Government of Canada to do more of this. It is a border matter. But it is a serious, serious problem and it is leading to death and trauma in communities.”

-Syed Mohammed Ali Zaidi, 27, of Toronto, has been charged with:

-the prime minister framed the amendment as a “list put forward” by the government for public consultation.

“We’re hearing a lot of feedback around concerns that hunters are saying about guns that they use more for hunting, hunting rifles and shotguns,”

he said. “That’s what we’re listening to feedback on now, to make sure we’re not capturing weapons that are primarily hunting weapons.”

“That’s what we’re listening to feedback on now—to make sure that we’re not capturing weapons that are primarily hunting weapons,” PM Trudeau tells media when asked whether he’d consider changes to Bill C-21 amendment amid concerns re: expanded prohibited firearms list.

Gun ban calls into question NDP support

https://nationalpost.com/news/liberal-gun-control-bill-raises-questions-about-ndp-support?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#Echobox=1670277118

-One prominent New Democrat came out against the policy on Monday, calling it a massive overreach that must be fixed.

-Meanwhile, the national conversation on gun control took an interesting turn over the weekend after Montreal Canadiens’ netminder and avid hunter Carey Price weighed in on the issue on social media.

-Price’s timing of his announcement so close to the anniversary are also being roundly criticized.

The team’s owner told Radio-Canada on Monday that the 35-year-old Price was not aware of the 1989 massacre.

“I am not a criminal or a threat to society,” he posted to Instagram, along with a photo of him wearing camouflage hunting gear and cradling a shotgun.

“What @justinpjtrudeau is trying to do is unjust. I support the @ccfr_ccdaf (Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights) to keep my hunting tools.”

-Separately, a spokesperson for Public Security Minister Marco Mendicino told La Presse that the firearm Price is carrying in his Instagram post would not be banned under Bill C-21.

“Our bill does not target firearms currently used for hunting and we fully respect the traditions of hunters and Indigenous Peoples,” Audrey Champoux said in a statement.

-political science Professor Kathy Brock said gun control offers a unique dilemma to the NDP, who rely heavily on both inner-city voters and those in rural parts of the country.

“This one is very difficult for the NDP to find a united consensus position on,” she told the National Post.

“They are putting the NDP in a very difficult position that could cause a bit of a schism and tension in the relationship between the NDP and Liberals, but also within the NDP party.”

-Veteran NDP MP Charlie Angus who represents Timmins-James Bay, a vast northern Ontario riding encompassing nearly 252,000 sq. km. and a diverse range of rural cities, villages and First Nations communities, is speaking out.

This is a good article on how the Liberal government promise to ban hand guns morphed into a massive overreach including hunting rifles and shotguns.

The 11th hour amendment thrown into Bill C-21 is hugely problematic and must be fixed

https://globalnews.ca/news/9325298/electric-vehicle-manufacturing-ingersoll-ontario/

-Trudeau “Every government in the world would love to invest millions of dollars to draw in places like this,” he said during a news conference at the plant in southwestern Ontario.

-The provincial and federal governments each invested $259 million toward GM’s $2-billion plan for the Ingersoll plant and to overhaul its Oshawa, Ont., plant to make it EV-ready.

-The federal government said the Ingersoll plant is expected to manufacture 50,000 electric vehicles by 2025.

-Premier Doug Ford called GM’s commitment to the plant “a massive vote of confidence” in Ontario but said there was more work to do given the uncertain economy.

“We’ve brought back the auto sector,” he said. “These vehicles are going to be produced with clean steel, clean energy and great people.”

Ford had scrapped EV rebates shortly after he was first elected in 2018 and his government ended the province’s cap-and-trade program, which funded the rebates, later that year.

-The federal government offers up to $5,000 off the cost of new electric cars with a base price under $55,000, or pickup trucks, SUVs and vans under $60,000.

-pushes vaccines and new versions of it

Listener Feedback Re: Book club feedback

From:Emily

Great podcast on Boris’ book. I have been procrastinating on purchasing gas cans because I wasn’t sure which brand to buy, and had the all-or-nothing mindset, as in, gotta buy ALL of them at once, which never seemed to fit in my monthly budgets.

After listening to your podcast, I went out and bought 2 x 20L Scepter ones, because having an extra 40 L on hand is better than having 0 L on hand! Here is a consideration for smaller people, especially smaller women – I had originally planned on getting 25 L cans, but when I got to the store and saw them in person, I realized that a full 25 L can would be awkward for me to lift and handle when filling my van. So I opted for the 20 L size, which is very manageable for me, even when filled with gas.

Next time I have room in my monthly budget, I will add another 1 or 2 cans, and by the end of summer I should have 100 L extra in my garage!

As always, I really enjoy listening to your banter on the podcast. Looking forward to more!

Emily

Listener Feedback From J

RE: National Range Day

I love this and would be interested in organizing one at my local gun range BUT I’m not allowed in the facility due to refusing to show a nazi Vax card.

Not sure if this is in every province but here in Manitoba it’s pure tyranny. My daughter enjoyed her three years of jr rifle club but shes no longer allowed to attend this valuable program.

I will look for a group to go out in the bush for this because that’s what we have to do these days. I’m feeling being prepared to defend ourselves is extremely sadly and necessary in these times.

Great job on the podcast guys. I look forward to every episode!

Feedback From Eric

RE: gun setup

Good afternoon,

I am wondering if one of the courses you would offer would be how to set up your firearm? I have done what I can do kind of on my own, and as a fairly inexperienced shooter, I’m wondering if I have my equipment set up properly? And by set up, I mean bore sighting, sighting in, scope placement on the rails, how to hang your sling, and things like that etc.

If you do not offer something like that, are there any decent resources that you would recommend me using? I understand there is a myriad of choices in books and on YouTube, but after listening to you for the last couple of years, I kind of trust your opinion on this sort of thing.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Hope you had a great holiday and I wish you the best for the new year!

Best regards,

Eric

This week, Colt joins the panel, after arriving late. Andrew, Benny, Gavin, and Pierre are holding comments on the new year new lock-downs across Canada. Instead, we have mass surveillance using mobile phone data from 2020, 2022 federal tax increases, Toronto’s unsurprising increase in firearms crimes, and 160 newly prohibited firearms have been surrounded so far.

RE: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hello Patriots!

For the last podcast before XMas, I want to wish all of you and your loved ones Merry Christmas! Thank you for keeping spirits high all year long and for all courses, events and products you bring to the community. I hope for more!

For the last episode in December (book club), I wonder if there is any hidden agenda behind picking this book now (I hope so). Very timely and may come extremely useful if things turn really bad.

Stay strong!

Kris

Andrew, Dave, Gavin, and Pierre are on the panel to discuss a covid and firearms. Some of the guys participated in an invitational shotgun match, spoiler Dave won. Ontario is changing the Vax Pass rules to require QR codes. Ontario and BC are racing to the most ridiculous Covid Christmas rules. Cabelas accidentally sold the spiciest 7.62 ammo. Ministerial mandate letters were released, and unsurprisingly the Public Safety Minister will be focusing his efforts on legal gun owners.

This week, the panel learns that Andrew and Pierre both went to space camp. The news is mostly about Covid. New Brunswick is now allowing essential businesses to discriminate based on medical history, while illegal asylum seekers are allowed to enter Canada, and despite 80% of the workforce being inoculated employers are having staffing shortages. Deer in Quebec catch Covid, and the Toronto Zoo is vaccinating their animals. It’s real clown world hours this week.
