We apologize that the sermon audio starts a few minutes into the sermon.

To give context for where this begins, Pastor Garrison had introduced Jesus temptation in Mark 1:12-13. In verse 12, the phrase "drove him out into the wilderness" hearkens readers back to Israel's 40 years of testing and trial in the wilderness in the Old Testament. Pastor Garrison had just read aloud from 1 Corinthians 10:1-11, where Paul explains that Israel's story was written as an example for us.

The parallel texts he references on Jesus' temptation are Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13.

OUTLINE: Jesus was tempted and faithful for us.
1) Jesus' temptation & Israel (audio begins a few minutes into this point)
2) Jesus' temptation & Adam
3) Jesus' temptation & us

Matthew 7:1-6 - Judging people rightly requires us to be repentant and to be careful.

“Righteous men are men of unfailing love. Just as righteous means “those right with God” (and therefore committed to righteousness of life) so “men of unfailing love” means those on whom the steadfast love of God has been poured out (and therefore seek to reflect that love in their lives).” ~ J. God deserves and demands our whole hearted devotion as our Creator, Redeemer, and King. Our love and devotion to him is far too weak and shallow, but he gives forgiveness, transformation, and compels us to change through the work of his Son and the power of his Spirit. As we’re changes by his grace, we’re empowered then to order our homes in such a way as to train our families to be devoted to the Lord and his Word.

View Details

God uses the role of parents to provide both discipline and discipleship to their children, in order that their children may grow in Christ-likeness, obtaining the promise of salvation.

View Details

God created marriage between a wife and husband to reveal something to us of the union that we as the church share with Jesus Christ. As a husband and wife share all that they are and all that they have with one another, Jesus does the same with his bride—the church. Wives and husbands also illustrate the Gospel in the way that they fulfill their perspective roles called for here in Ephesians 5:22-33

View Details

God creates the family, therefore he is the one that gets to define it and determine how it functions. He also is the one who determines the reason the family exists in the first place. In Genesis 1 and 2, we see that God gives the gift of the family unit because man is humanity in the image of God. Part of what it means to image God is that we’re made for relationships. Another part of what it means to image God is that we’re given the vocation of ruling over God’s creation on his behalf. Ultimately, God sends our Savior through the means of humanity obeying this creation mandate, and when he comes, he ultimately fulfills it by making God’s kingdom manifest on the earth.

Jesus teaches us to pray to our Father and Shepherd that we would not be overcome by and succumb to temptation. Instead, we’re called to run to the Father as our Deliverer, as he is the only one who can deliver us and has delivered us in the person and work of Jesus. Now, as those in Christ, we’re called to depend on God daily for strength to overcome sin in our lives.

View Details

Jesus teaches us to pray to our heavenly Father for the forgiveness of our debts. In the Gospel, we can rest assured that our forgiveness is certain, and that God will also empower us to forgive others their debts against us.

View Details

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus calls us to be dependent upon God as our Father and Provider for our daily needs.

View Details

To authentically pray “your will be done,” we must deny ourselves and our own wills, submit to the authority and will of God, and place our faith in his character, power, and plan.

View Details

One of the callings we have as citizens of the Kingdom of heaven is to pray and embody the petition found in the Lord’s Prayer—“your kingdom come.” The first word of the petition reveals to us that God is our great King in his power, authority, and presence. What we desire when praying this petition is for his Kingship to be made visible and submitted to. We can pray in this way as we pray for ourselves, our church, our great commission, and our Lord’s return.

View Details

What should be our greatest desire and joy is expressed in this petition that Jesus teaches us. And that petition is that God’s name would be treated with honor and reverence and joy.

View Details

Before we need to know how to pray, we need to know our God and Father we’re praying to. By his grace, he sent his Son to share all that he is with us, including his Sonship. Therefore, we are adopted into God’s family and get to approach him in prayer as his children.

After persecution in Jerusalem, the Gospel spreads out into the surrounding regions and bears fruit. As this is taking place, the Holy Spirit calls Phillip to depend on him, and to teach the Bible and declare the Gospel to an Ethiopian Eunuch.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

In the fifth commandment, we see one of the ways that families that follow Christ are supposed to be different. We’re called to honor our parents and to require the same of our children. Like all the Ten Commandments, this is one we’ve all broken and torn asunder. But not Jesus. Jesus honored his parents and perfectly honored the Father. And by his grace, he shares with us the promised blessing attached to this commandment. (Due to technical difficulties, the audio this week isn't perfect. We're working hard to get this right!)

In fourth commandment, we see God's command to set aside one day every week to rest and spend time with God. In the third commandment, God commands his people to refrain from lifting up his name in a way that dishonors him or belittles his infinite worth. In this sermon, we look at a few ways that we are guilty of this, but how Christ—who alone is guiltless—was counted guilty so that we can be counted as guiltless in him.

In the second commandment, God commands us not to form idols for worship. If you see idols as carvings made by hands, this may seem irrelevant to you. But we also see that idols are comforts made by hearts—something we’re all guilty of. To be redeemed and to kill the idols we’ve created, we need Jesus, the true image of God to replace our worthless objects of worship.

View Details

In our redemption, God lays an exclusive claim over our lives. As our Creator and Redeemer, he then commands that we worship him and him alone. While this may make you feel like you're being fitted for a strait jacket, we see that in his exclusive confinement there is exquisite contentment.

The first sermon in our Ten Commandments Series, this introduction lays the foundational argument for why these commandments are still relevant and beautiful for us us today, and how they relate to Jesus.
