Solving the Truck Parking Crisis: Dynamic Software for a Fragmented Industry
The North American trucking industry faces a persistent and frustrating challenge: a horrendous shortage of safe truck parking. It is a true "catch-22"—while everyone relies on the goods trucks deliver, few want a truck yard in their own backyard.

In this episode of the Trucking Risk and Insurance Podcast, we sit down with Joe Caivano (COO) and Venu Kolli (CEO), the co-founders of Best Truck Parking and SpotOS. They share their journey from building a truck lot from scratch in New Jersey to developing dynamic software specifically designed to solve the parking crisis.

We discuss how their technology helps lot owners monetize unused land, navigates the "regulatory nightmare" of zoning and DOT requirements, and provides a much-needed marketplace for drivers searching for a safe place to park.

Nate Veeh from Geotab joins us to pull back the curtain on a massive industry headache: the truck parking crisis. We aren't just talking about a lack of space; we are looking at the hard data from over 6,000,000 connected vehicles managed by Geotab globally.

In this episode, Nate explains how Geotab’s "Altitude" platform provides mobility insights to transportation planners and authorities to better understand their networks. We dive into the findings of a recent year-long study that reveals the nation's biggest parking "hot spots"—including why Indiana ranks #1 among all 50 states for ramp parking events.

We also discuss the "Driver’s Dilemma": the collision between strict Hours of Service (HOS) regulations and a critical lack of infrastructure that forces drivers to choose between an illegal ramp park or a safety violation. If you want to see how big data is being used to tackle these infrastructure gaps and improve fleet safety, you need to hear this conversation.

In this episode, we sit down with personal injury attorney Aaron to discuss the staggering financial risks facing motor carriers today. From the rise of "nuclear verdicts" to the legal traps that can leave small fleets personally liable, we break down why the industry is currently under-insured and over-exposed.

We dive deep into the legal and insurance mechanisms that every owner-operator and fleet manager needs to understand to survive in today's litigious environment.

The "Reptile Theory" Explained: How plaintiff attorneys leverage jury emotions and anger against corporations to spark massive, "nuclear" awards.

The Chemistry of Savings
In this episode of the Trucking Risk and Insurance Podcast, we sit down with Brian Livingston, a chemical engineer and veteran of Caterpillar's diesel engine division. Brian breaks down a unique catalytic technology that is helping trucking companies save 3% to 5% in fuel costs while significantly reducing their environmental footprint.

Brian explains the "cracking" process—how a simple-looking copper tube filled with rare earth catalysts can break down long-chain hydrocarbons into shorter, more efficient burning chains. The result? More energy pushing the piston and less soot clogging your engine.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
The Science of "Cracking": How catalytic reactions break down diesel fuel molecules for a more efficient burn.

Massive Maintenance Gains: Why reducing soot by up to 50% leads to fewer DPF regenerations and longer engine life.

The 12-Month Payback: How the 100% ROI on this technology makes it an easy "yes" for any CFO or fleet manager.

Sustainability That Pays: Why you don't have to wait for electric or hydrogen trucks to start reducing your carbon footprint today.

Simple Retrofitting: How this device can be installed in under an hour without any engine recalibration.

Whether you are looking to survive rising fuel prices or meet new sustainability goals, Brian’s "common sense" approach to chemical engineering offers a practical solution for the modern fleet.

Is your safety department stuck in the past? 🚛 🛡️

In this episode of the Trucking Risk and Insurance Podcast, we kick off 2026 by diving deep into the evolution of in-cab camera technology. We are joined by John Weldon, President of SureCam, to discuss how video telematics is moving beyond simple "big brother" monitoring to become a tool for driver retention, real-time coaching, and massive risk reduction.

John breaks down why traditional telematics is only one leg of a "three-legged stool" and explains how SureCam's AI-powered "nudging" technology helps drivers correct unsafe behaviors in real-time—before an alert ever reaches the manager's desk.

In this episode, we cover: ✅ Context vs. Data: Why you need more than just a speeding alert to understand a crash. ✅ The Power of 360°: Using mirror, backup, and cargo mounts to eliminate blind spots. ✅ Reducing Alert Fatigue: How to filter the "noise" so safety managers can focus on what actually matters. ✅ Culture over Coaching: Implementing a "Driver Bill of Rights" and using gamification to reward your top performers. ✅ Privacy by Design: Using geofencing and face-blurring to respect driver boundaries.

If you’re looking to manage your safety department like an expert without the 30-year learning curve, this is a must-watch!

John and I are talking about the potential difficulties for essential truck drivers crossing the USA/Canada border.

Starting in January 2022, the border agents are going to ask and demand to see your COVID Vaccine proof or Vaccine Passport.
You need to use the ArriveCan to enter Canada, yes even truck drivers need to use the ArriveCan and the proof of vaccine for the COVID virus.

Stay tuned, as this is what is happening at the time of posting this video. John and I will keep you up-to-date.

John and I discuss the recent article in TruckNews regarding CRA and Driver Inc or Driver incorporated.
Does Driver Inc really create an uneven playing field? Is Driver Inc against the law? Does this include our beloved Owner-Operators? What will happen if the Owner-Operators are included in the mix? How can Owner-Operators get their own CVOR and trucking Insurance?

Here is the article in TruckNews: https://www.trucknews.com/transportation/feds-know-of-40-driver-inc-fleets-penalties-coming/1003155856/?fbclid=IwAR3a3BZUhHVm6Nj5SQsISXJTuPwebB8vkeWduX1KPgkFl6HlW4XElLq6QlM

Congratulations to Fleet Complete for being approved by Transport Canada for their ELD. Yes, Fleet Complete and Bigroad have now been APPROVED ELD Devices and suppliers by Transport Canada (TC).
This is a huge accomplishment. Being one of the few suppliers having an ELD (Electronic Logging Devices) approved by Transport Canada is a giant step forward. I know that lots of work went into getting each ELD device approved.

Trucking Insurance is a hard market. Getting trucking insurance when you have an ALERT or a Conditional Rating is tough. Add in Joint and Several Legal Liability and now we get Nucular Verdicts. One Billion dollar settlement. $1 billion. 100 million dollars ($100,000 000) with a 900 million dollar ($900,000,000) punitive damage award.

For over three decades KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc. and Chris Harris, Safety Dawg have been delivering in-house Driver Safety Meetings for their companies, corporate customers and their drivers during the American Thanksgiving. This year that will be tough to do with all the COVID-19 safety guidelines and protocols the government has put in place.

Together, KRTS and Safety Dawg have come up with both a timely and affordable solution for companies and their drivers. Through Research and Development, they have determined that companies and insurers alike, both support and embrace the idea that ongoing and regular Driver Safety Meetings and education are important to the insurability of trucking companies for meeting compliance.
These Driver Safety Meetings will be held virtually twice over the American Thanksgiving weekend on November 27th and 28th allowing companies and drivers the flexibility to choose a date that works best for them. The meetings will both run from 10 am - 12 noon EST.

Topics will include: Winter Driving and Speed and Space Management which is always timely before winter and appreciated by the drivers. These topics are led by Chris Harris of Safety Dawg. KRTS and Safety Dawg are thrilled to announce Kerri Wirachowsky, the Director of Roadside Inspection Program for the CVSA will educate the drivers on ‘How to Have an Exceptional Experience at the Weigh Scales’ followed by Pre and Post Trip Inspection expectations across North America.

Chris Harris states “Different times require a different way to deliver. Truck driver training is an essential component of your fleet’s safety program. The need for great, documented training has not gone away. In fact, I believe that the need is even greater today because drivers have much more on their minds, distracting them from driving.”

Registration has been made very simple for drivers and companies and has been made very affordable.
1 Driver $49.99 10-19 Drivers $499.00 20 and above $899.00

There will be a Certificate of Completion for those who attend.
Matt Richardson added, “During these unprecedented times we have to find new ways to ensure Professional Drivers are able to continue receiving ongoing education that helps keep the drivers, our roads, and the general public safe. These virtual safety meetings provide an opportunity for companies to invest in their drivers while also helping to improve fleet safety and meet insurance requirements at the same time.”

Information for PULSE: https://www.isbglobalservices.com/services/cargo-loss-prevention-and-supply-chain-security/commercial-transportation-companies/

• Cargo theft is very prevalent in Canada & US
• Eight major cargo theft areas in NA include – LA, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Memphis, NJ, Chicago & Toronto (GTA)
• Four of the major US areas have dedicated Cargo Theft Task Forces
• Only two police services in Canada – PRP & YRP have dedicated cargo theft units.
• Ironically, 2 years ago Canada (621) had more cargo thefts that the US (591)
• The large percentage of those cargo thefts occurred in Peel Region (Brampton & Mississauga) – 341 incidents.
• The second highest area in NA was California.
• CA has a population of 40 million and Peel Region has a population of 1.3 – big problem.

Why is it such a big problem?
• The GTA has one of the most unique landscapes for Organized Crime which include multiple groups all actively included in cargo theft: Traditional Organized Crime (TOC), Easter European OC, Asian O.C. & South Asian O.C.
• Cargo theft is “seed money” to help fund other more profitable criminal activities such as drug importation.
• In the GTA (Peel) high concentration of trucking companies, major series highways and the largest international airport.
• Lack of public perception at how big the problem really is, the ripple effect and the group’s involvement.
• Public perception is cargo theft is a “victimless crime” an insurance issue.
• Police have budget issues, resource issues, investigative priorities, need to focus on violent crime vs property crime.

Where does it take place?
• Culprits target industrial trucking yards that are often in isolated
• Often, they use a stolen tractor to hook up to a trailer
• Majority of trailers aren’t equipped with GPS
• If equipped with a GPS there is a small window of opportunity to recover the load
• Usually taken to a dedicated warehouse, unloaded and stolen tractor and empty trailer abandoned and later found by the police.

What do they steal?
• There is a market for any stolen commodity on the black market – willful blindness.
• Food/drink items (no serial numbers), consumer supplies and building products are easy to fence and supply and demand.
How do you fix the problem?
• Easiest method is to GPS every trailer – becomes a cost factor.
• Insurance incentives for trucking companies to embrace GPS tracking on all trailers.
• Need a real-time incident management service to escalate to police and provide police with real-time tools to recover the stolen trailer.
• The GTA needs a Joint Forces Cargo Task Force made up of major police services designed to target cargo theft.

• PULSE is a comprehensive suite of cargo loss prevention and supply chain security products and services designed to help reduce risk exposure and
mitigate cargo crime losses. Services are available by a la carte selection to suit an organization’s needs and requirements.

PULSE Benefits:
• Single source provider
• North American coverage
• Real-time law enforcement escalation globally
• Live tracking URL link technology to assist police with load recoveries
• National law enforcement database with 37,000 police agencies in North America
• GPS kits with monitoring and escalation packages for all modes of transportation
• World-class partners Show

The Mental Health Commission of Canada has recently developed three crisis response training programs for essential workers https://go.mentalhealthcommission.ca/e/597791/rtcl-nfrstrctr-esf-sfe-en-aspx/vdzyd/477357613?h=2p1KY6TZ0cEdUnkAdNhk6zMXJ7HI7HQjPG73UdAv3RY. We know that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, essential workers may experience depression and heightened anxiety due to the stress on their own health, the health of their family and friends, and the future of their livelihoods. These programs are specifically designed to help provide individuals with the tools and knowledge to better understand their own mental health and the mental health of others. There are three different courses available: Crisis Response training - Caring for Yourself https://go.mentalhealthcommission.ca/e/597791/isis-response-virtual-training/vdzyg/477357613?h=2p1KY6TZ0cEdUnkAdNhk6zMXJ7HI7HQjPG73UdAv3RY - Participants will be introduced to the Mental Health Continuum and the Big 4 Coping Strategies, to help learn how to better understand their own mental wellness, notice if they might be moving into unwell areas, use practical actions to help with stress, and know when to reach out to get professional help. Crisis Response training - Caring for your Team https://go.mentalhealthcommission.ca/e/597791/isis-response-virtual-training/vdzyg/477357613?h=2p1KY6TZ0cEdUnkAdNhk6zMXJ7HI7HQjPG73UdAv3RY - Participants will be introduced to the Mental Health Continuum, the Big 4 Coping Strategies, and Ad Hoc Incident Review to help learn how to better understand their own and their team’s mental wellness, notice if they might be moving into unwell areas, use practical actions to help with stress, and know when to reach out to get professional help. The first two hours of this course is the exact same as ‘Caring for Yourself’. It simply adds on an extra 90 minutes of material. So one would not need to take both courses. Crisis Response Training - Caring for Others https://go.mentalhealthcommission.ca/e/597791/virtual-training-caring-others/vdzyj/477357613?h=2p1KY6TZ0cEdUnkAdNhk6zMXJ7HI7HQjPG73UdAv3RY - will focus on how to create a safe space to have conversations about mental health and/or substance use problems.
