One of the themes of our series has been that God is (and has been) building a church where everyone can serve. His word moved powerfully through Paul, and can do the same for us.

We are a broad church, at different stages in our faith and with many subtle differences in our views. But there are some key non-negotiable commitments, without which membership here makes no sense.

(1)    To be a Christian is to commit to Christ. The shortest creed is “Jesus is Lord”. He is Lord of all, or not Lord at all.

(2)    He reveals himself and his will for us in scripture and he calls us to commit our lives to His commands.

Many of us take our eschatology from Disney: both overstating and understating the significance of death at the same time. This is a clever lie because you accept the truth to some extent, but are deceived into thinking you can deal with it tomorrow.

This lie equates spirituality with Christianity and encourages an individualist view of faith. It also mischaracterizes church as a ceremonial place of rituals and rules, not an assembly of disciples. The value of the body is ignored (where we encourage and serve one another) and the authority of church leaders is viewed with suspicion (“I know better”, “Moving on” from traditional religious institutions, seeing them as boring, restrictive, etc.

Satan is spiritual! So when you’re isolated from the body, he becomes your spiritual companion and your pastor.

Satan wants to disrupt our relationship with God getting us to believe that we can’t pray about certain things because they are too insignificant or too selfish etc. He also wants to undermine our trust in God’s word and either be ignorant of what God says to us, or disbelieve it for some reason. Even Jesus himself uses scripture to combat Satan’s lies. God is so big that nothing is too small for Him.

Satan speaks out of both corners of his mouth. In this lie he wants us to settle for the idea that good people go to heaven… and we must be good right? When we accept this lie, we compare ourselves favorably to others (“at least I’m not that person”). If the previous lie understates the severity of our sin, this understates the holiness of God. Again, there is a grain of truth in it, you can be good enough, but in Christ, not works.

Satan wants us to believe that it’s down to us to earn our own way to God and that our sin might be too great for grace. He loves us to compare ourselves to other believers unfavorably, become discouraged, give up and say “I don’t belong in church, I’m not good enough”. Like many lies, it works because it’s kind of true, but it is not the whole truth. Satan accuses, but God clothes us in righteousness.

God calls us to be agents of His justice in the world, and to live out the Gospel in a way that reflects God's heart for justice. This includes concern and advocacy for the poor and marginalized, seeking righteousness for ourselves and for society, and calling out evil so that we might call the world to repentance. Rev. Alex begins our new series this week, I WILL: The Promises of God.
God makes numerous promises in the bible, often to people in uncertain times. Unlike human promises, they are 100% guaranteed because of who God is. Our understanding is that ultimately, they all point to Jesus so a key verse for this series is 2 Corinthians 1: 20: "For all the promises of God find their yes in Him."

The first promise is to defeat the enemy. We see that even in her sin, Eve is promised an offspring to do this and that although Satan will be defeated, the victory will wound the savior. It's a promise "another" will fulfill.

Our new sermon series, Lord, Teach Us to Pray, focusing on The Lord's Prayer, starts this weekend.

Pagan culture often involved overly complex and lengthy prayers to get a 'god's' attention. Jesus says that God is already your Father and that holy though He is, He is already listening too.

We are made in the image of God with faculties like His of logical thought. But we are also deceiveable and now fallen.

Common sense is about learining to think Christianly.

Do our "logical" thoughts lead to more freedom and holiness, or less?

This sermon is not about big signs or miracles or fleeces before the Lord. We have the cross already for that. We often worry about decisions and can be tempted just to rely on ourselves. At its heart the question is whether we really trust God to come through with the answer we want. The Spirit compels or prevents or inspires in His time and in His way.

All discernment comes back to scripture: the plain revealed and written word of God against which all decisions and senses of calling must be measured.

Scripture is both something for us to use to know what to do and something for God to use to work on us when we’re being stupid.

Colossians 4: 5-18
Psalm 78: 3-4
Matthew 5: 13

Christians are called to authenticity at home in private and to pray that we, in turn, are able to reach out. A radically different church growing up will find it easier to reach out.

Psalm 103: 13-17
Mark 13: 32-37

When the whole body is clothed with Christ there is a dynamic change in our behavior. Being focused on things above (up) clothes over our differences and makes us welcoming to all. The sexual ethic debate is a delicate one but ironically Paul says the fruit of biblical sexual ethics and the exclusion of immoral behavior is the inclusion of more types of people.

Many of us want in some way to do the right thing. We seek godliness in many places and through many techniques. But if godliness comes from God, then we need to cut these other things out of our diet. They don't help us.

Jesus growth in the Lord was unique in one sense but in another completely normal.

In the next gospel passage he even expresses surprise that they would not know where he would be.

Are we making repentant children and passing the faith on to the next generation?

Do we pray that our children would exceed us in their faith and do we take this command seriously for the whole generation below us not just our own immediate families?

Are we reproducing our faith?

Evil always overplays its hand and will eventually be revealed for what it is. God is defamed by his enemies and they look to be of incalculable power, yet, like the kings of the histories in Daniel Pt. I, they too must find out that God reigns.

Even Daniel admits to being confused by his vision, but this one is explained. He learns that as empires rise and fall a time of great persecution is coming when a king will decisively set himself up against Gods people… and lose! Therefore Daniel trusts God enough to go about his daily business.

In the second part of our series on the book of Daniel, we receive a series of visions.

Like the histories, they testify to a conflict of kingdoms and the sovereignty of God over even the most powerful of human enemies, even future ones. In sermon one, it gets weird quickly! We therefore need to understand the genre to understand the point.

Even those in poverty give. But not out of command, rather out of love. Just as Jesus became poor for us to be rich, we can respond with our riches for the poor. This is a practical necessity for evangelism—paying the electric bill enables others to hear the good news and also gain abundant life. In reality we responded to God's abundant creation with nothing better than abundant sin. But God is yet more abundant, even giving his own life in exchange for ours.

The language of redemption and ransom are both monetary images. Mark & Paul say such a high price should manifest in humility, service and glorifying God in our bodies.

The Sept. 8/9 sermon opens the new series Abundance: The Overflow of God’s Blessings. Genesis contrasts nothingness with abundance. Man, made in God’s image, is given stewardship over it all.

A classic stewardship talk recommends carefully managing God’s resources. But if we are made in God’s image…. and God is abundant, a small careful percentage-based response is not all that godly, rather abundance is!

Readings from this sermon: Genesis 1: 1-3 Psalm 115: 14-16 Matthew 6: 25-27
