Our Final conversation for the season is one that needs to be had. Real and raw conversations seem to be the theme of the season, and something that we feel society needs more of. As Brett Pechey opens up, it’s obvious the heartache and despair in his voice about his personal experience with mental health and suicide. We acknowledge how hard this is for Brett to share and for some to hear.
But the hard conversations are always worth having.
They help create awareness, break the cycle and remind us that help and support surrounds us.
We thank you for listening to season 6 and hope you enjoyed the conversations as much as we did. We will be taking a break as we knuckle down in other parts of our careers but will be back before you know it. 2023 has seen the largest flood on record in Northern Australia.
The scale of this flood is honestly mind blowing and for so many, it’s not only ripped through their land, it’s ripped through their homes, sheds, equipment and livestock.

Wayne’s eye for cattle and passion for the success of a sale has certainly earned the respect of vendors and buyers.
Throughout this interview Wayne and Caitlyn break down what it takes to do what he does, the pressure, the skill and the ability. For every lot he’s selling, he’s reading the crowd, he’s watching the bull, articulating the facts and figures on him, and he’s recognising what each interested bidder may be looking to gain out of this purchase. Josie Angus lives by the motto: bite off more than you can chew, and chew like hell. It’s clear that this unstoppable mentality drives Josie and her family to achieve what many said would fail. Once sat upon a Saddle Bronc cracking out of the chutes from all over Australia, to flying the Australian Flag at the National Finals Rodeo in America, where he came Third. Adam Newman was born with a condition called Optic Atrophy which causes his eye sight to deteriorate over time. Adam is incredibly humble and quite reserved. You’ll get to the part where Adam says he doesn’t look at it like a disability because he was born with it and doesn’t know any different. It certainly doesn’t define who he is or his ability by any means.

As the son of a NQ shopkeeper, Noel Daley was never gifted a cent. After a taste of working on the property his brother managed near Cloncurry in North-West Queensland, he headed bush to make his fortune.
Noel spent years on stations in the North-West working his way up from ringer to Manager. Holidays were non-existent and on rare days off, he dabbled in the burgeoning campdrafting scene. He managed to snag himself a wife and start a family before scraping together the deposit to buy his very own place.

90 Years of age, Vic Gough was witness to an era like no other.In 1945 Vic talks about the time he and his Father, Bill transported their horses to a Campdraft via train as there was no other method of transport at this time. Loading from Bowen and travelling to Proserpine to compete, later discovering when it was time to go home, they were no longer allowed to transport the horses back to Bowen via the train. Kylie's Grandfather, Monty Atkinson was one of the founders of the Droughtmaster breed and MAGS (Monty Atkinson Genetics Sale).Raised on the Valley of Lagoon Station, situated on the headwaters of the Burdekin, Kylie is 1 of 4 Daughters who all play a significant role in carrying on the MAGS genetics to this day.Working for Kerry Packer, Kylie pins this as one of the greatest character building experiences in her life.Now working along side her partner Mat, and watching her two children develop their love for horses and cattle, Kylie recognises the current challenges in adapting to market changes, and looks to the future challenges her children may face as they reach adulthood and step into the industry.
"If you read the horse right and have a mutual trust for each other, these are the starting points to bring out the best, and you can usually work on from there." - Charlie ProwCharlie Prow is a well known name around the racing industry.Breathing in the dust of Outback Queensland from his first breath, Charlie was born and raised in Outback Queensland and setting his sights on the saddle from a young age and continued a career over the next 60 years as an amateur jockey, professional jockey, horse trainer, horse breeder and master to apprentice jockeys.Throughout his career, Charlie has had 725 Wins, 1397 places, 4,961 starts. These Statistics are only recorded from the year 2000. Charlie was inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame of 2019.Miss Petty was a former Border Region galloper who was bought in partnership by Dick Banks and Fred Gilthrow, and given to Charlie Prow to train. Miss Petty went onto write her name into bush folklore by winning 22 races straight for Charlie and inducted into Queensland Racing Hall of Fame 2018.Charlie is undoubtably a wealth of knowledge and has earned his respect within the Racing Industry over the last 60 odd years.

Born in 1931, Alick Smith (Wadhi) is 1 of 16 children raised on the traditional land Barada at Bluff Central Queensland.At just 9 years of age, Alick went to work as a stockman on a cattle station in an era where children worked as hard as the men. Always being on or around horses and handling cattle, this is where Alick grew a love and passion for Campdrafting and Rodeo.Throughout this episode you'll hear Alick's voice from a far in the background. This episode isn't as polished as the others, but it's certainly pure.Passing away at the age on 89, Alick is remembered as a legend. Picked to ride at the Calgary Stampede and being a head stockman at an early age. We get a glimpse of it all.

The town of Birdsville in Outback Queensland recorded a population of 140 in 2016. Come September every year the town welcomes anywhere from 6000 - 8000 people to the Birdsville Races. Gary Brook joins us as the Vice President and paints a picture of the history and what it takes to put on a race meet and event to this scale in outback Queensland. Although the event is held in Birdsville, people are travelling from all over Australia economically impacting businesses and communities along the way. An impact that results in better roads, facilities and opportunities.No matter your background or "status", going to Birdsville Races and rolling out a swag puts everyone on a level playing field. Gary and Kay talk about how this sets a tone for the event and how it becomes clear that stress levels are dropped for the simple reason there is nowhere else they need to be.
Raised on "Inga Downs" north of Dingo, Queensland Australia, Will Comiskey is a well travelled Cowboy. At 28 years of age, Will sets off to compete in the Mongol Derby. Not once, but TWICE!"I rode for a thousand kilometres and didn't see a fence." Will paints a picture of what it was like to ride across the Mongolian land from checkpoint to checkpoint. He shares some of the challenges he faced and saw other contestant overcome. Crossing the finish line in First position hand in hand with another two contestants speaks true testimony to Will's personality. Will then went on and placed equal fourth the second time around and awarded most successful Derby rider in History.
Moving to Taroom in 1955 with 26 horses to a bare 22,000 acre block, Grace and her husband set roots down. Grace is the Patron of Pony Club Queensland, a title that she earned throughout 51 years of being a proud member and carrying out important roles along the way. John takes us back to the foundation of "Stratton Stock Horses." After losing an international Rodeo Scholarship at the age of 16 to an injury, Scott soon found himself on the path to become "SK Horsemanship"."Quite often it's only the guy holding the trophy on the day that gets full recognition. I've never seen a horse win the Melbourne Cup yet and someone go "I want to know who broke him in". But I tell you what if it pulls back on the truck and kicks some farrier, someone will go "who broke him in?" After returning from the USA titled "Champion Bronc Rider" and soon to be a father at the age of 28, Scott purchased land here in Australia breaking in 180 horses that year. Breaking and pre training horses for the rodeo industry, campdrafting, polo, race horses and everything in between.
