You might have had problem getting Oasis tickets this weekend, but during August Watford didn't have any problems getting a win or two. However, that run of wins came to an end with a defeat at Bramell Lane against the Blades of Sheffield.

Mike, Jon and Jas convened after the Stoke game to discuss Watford’s third win from three, as Tom Cleverley and his Hornets continue their perfect start to the season.
The lads talk through the win, which seemed to be inspired by the half time introduction of Yaser Larouci, building on a hard fought but largely even first half showing.

Watford swept aside Milton Keynes as the first home game of the 2024/25 season ended in a 5-0 romp for Tom Cleverley’s Hornets.
Tom Ince celebrated his new contract with a hat-trick, while captain for the night Mattie Pollock marked the occasion with a thumping header. There were also a number of eye-catching debuts with Rocco Vata and goal scoring Kwadwo Baah turning in exciting showings.

As we head towards the start of another season (FTRE’s 15th!) we thought it was time to take stock, to assess and address where our beloved club currently finds itself.
We look back at what lead to us being where we appear to be - heading into a challenging season with concerns on and off the pitch. We look at the owners and some of the others at top table and, well, get a few things off our chest.
This isn’t a one and done. We’ll be keeping an eye on things as best we can and talking through developments as and when opportunities arise. If ever there has been a time to be a critical friend, it’s now.

The 1990s was a decade of tremedous change, both in football and in the real world. And the Watford Treasury have published their 3rd book all about being a Watford fan during the decade.
'The Ninties: The Second Coming' is out now and follows on from their book about the 1950s and 60s - 'The Golden Years and Visions of Blue' - and the story of the 1970s - 'Bonser Out" (all avaible from https://thewatfordtreasury.com/collections/hardback-books). Jon speaks to Colin Payne and Nick Catley, who both edited the book, and Ian Grant one of the key contributors. In the 90s, Ian created bsad.org, the original online Watford FC resources (and still an amazing read) and Colin edited Watford fanzine Yellow Experience.

This is another special retrospective episode of From the Rookery End.
In these podcasts we take an in depth look back at some of the most pivotal moment in Hornets history, having previously covered the 1997 thrashing of our friends up the M1, the breathless Play Off Semi Final victory at St Andrews in 1999 and of course, our tribute to THAT goal by friend of the podcast, Troy Deeney.
Well, they say you never forget your first time, so on this podcast we are going to make sure, by going back 40 years to the day (if you are listening on release day!) to look at Watford’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup Final.
Of course, the result didn’t exactly go to plan (we don’t think this is a spoiler!) but it was still a historic day, and one which is looked back upon fondly by generations of the Hornets faithful. In this podcast we try to encapsulate what it was like to be a Watford fan during that famous cup run, culminating in that sunny day at Wembley in May 1984.
This show ahs been brought to life by a wide range of contrinbutiors, without whom this simply wouldn’t have been possible, so a huge thanks to Olly and Geoff Wicken, Frances Lynn and Adam Cummigs - the voice of Vicarage Road’s Radio Hornet during the 70’s and 80’s.

Awards were dished out in the categories from the 1989 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party (kids ask your parents or head for Google). As Watford took on Sheffield Wednesday in The Vic, Jon, Mike and DCW flew over to Stockholm to take in Hammarby Women v Linköping Women and the big Stockholm derby Djurgarden v Hammerby. We know things aren't great for Watford fans but this wasn't avoidance tactics - it was a birthday celebration. And of course the boys were kept in the loop of what was going, or not, for the Hornets by the whole of the FTRE gang and you'll hear their thoughs on the game.
It was a long way to Stockholm, and we know there's a long way to go for Watford - both on and off the pitch - but isn't that the life of a football fan?

In 2010, Lionel Birnie wrote a book called Enjoy The Game. It tells the story of Watford during the Golden Era - when Graham Taylor and Elton John steered the club from the bottom of Division 4 to the top of Division 1 and a trip into Europe.
The new podcast is an audio series of the book. It's read by Colin Mace and he brings to life the story and all the interivews did in 2008-2009. He spoke to all the key players, the people behind the scenes and of course Graham Taylor himself.

Watford once again struggled to live up to their billing as a heavyweight Championship contender, coming unstuck against Swansea in a game that lasted a marathon 110 minutes.
Of that 110 minutes precious few of them were memorable from a Watford perspective, so it was a tired and dispirited Jon, Colin, Jason and Mike that gathered when the final whistle finally came, running the rule over the latest Vicarage Road false start.

A point at home... How strange! In a match that will not go down in Premier League history, with two poor sides, Watford fans left Vicarage Road with a very strange positive vibe... but we're not really sure why. After the final whistle, Jon, Mike and Jason met outside the Hornet Shop to discuss the game, the players who were fit and healthy enough to get on the pitch and, of course, they had to discuss the appointment of Watford's new Head Coach - Rob Edwards. After the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace and confirmation that Watford will be playing the 2022-2023 season back in the Championship, FTRE look back on how we find ourselves in this position. Whilst Watford took an FA Cup enforced weekend off, Jon, Mike and Jason gathered to discuss fans' views on an array of topics. After asking fans to Twitter, "We’ve asked this question before, but it seems like a good time to raise it again. You’re at a Fan’s Forum with Scott/Gino. You have the mic. What question are you asking? The caveat is that you have to be genuinely willing to ask it in a face to face situation." So we decided to take the best ones and discuss them. We aren't answering the questions, remember we aren't the club, we are just a few fans sharing our ideas and wondering how they would go down. The hot topics include: not sticking with a manager, finding a connection with the club, what are the clubs targets and should someone else take over the control of the club's football operations.
They've been very rare this season so a 2-1 win away at Southampton made for an extremely happy day - but it wasn't just because of the match. Jon and Mike went down to St Marys on the Junior Hornets bus with the legend, and still a force of nature well into her 80's, Ann Swanson. In losing 0-2 at home to Brighton, this Watford side became the first to lose six home games in a row in the top flight in Hornets history, and while the result may not have been too much of a surprise, the boys were shocked by the performance.
There is a robust discussion about the tactics employed by Roy Hodgson, who after three games in charge is yet to see his team score, as the team try to assess just what went wrong at Vicarage Road. Again.
The chaps also pay tribute to the magnificent Ann Swanson, who was honoured at half time with the official announcement that the family stand will from now on be named after her. A truly wonderful moment in the middle of an otherwise forgettable afternoon.

At the third time of asking, Watford got to play Burnley at Turf Moor, this season. It was an awayday to remember, well just because going away with a load of friends is always the best way to make football memories. Jon, Mike (with Flo and Arlo), DCW and Colin (with another Flo and Lilly) made the short trip to The Emirates to see Watford's disapponitingly lose 1-0. Watford banished the memories of a disappointing derby day in the best way possible with a perfect performance at promoted Norwich. It was therefore an understandably upbeat trio of Jason, Mike and Jon that gathered at the final whistle to discuss a dream showing at Carrow Road. The boys keep a lid on their emotions long enough to talk through the game, which was seen through in expert fashion with a team featuring a number of changes from the weekend. It was therefore little surprise that it was an upbeat Mike, Jason and Jon that gathered to talk about the Hornets comprehensive win over Birmingham City.
In what was a pretty efficient team performance there was specific praise for the majestic Francisco Sierralta and a rejuvenated Nathaniel Chalobah, with the latter turning in a stunning Man of the Match performance.

Xisco’s Hornets’ made it 8 wins in 9 with a thumping away win against Rotherham, so it was triumphant trio of Jon, Mike and Adam that gathered at the final whistle to talk through the devastating display.
Phillip Zinckernagel’s impressive form was one of many positives from a professional and ruthless display, with Watford finishing the evening in second place in the table.

Watford were second best against a solid Cardiff, who in a game of few chances earned a well deserved win to end Watford’s undefeated home record.
Mike and Jon were lucky enough to be at the Vic for the first game with fans since February and convened after the game to try and put into words what it was like. You'd think a week with no Watford match would be a nice calm week. Well, it has been for Mike and Jon, but not so much for Adam. Our testimonial week continues with an interview the man who was the first star player when the podcast began - Danny Graham. In the first season of FTRE, Watford were punching above their weight. Off the field the it was a turbulent time with low budgets and cost cutting where ever possible. On the pitch, Malky Mackay and the players lead by John Eustace did an amazing to survive in the Championship. And it was Danny Graham and his 27 goals that gave the team that edge it needed. Jon. Mike and Jason caught up with Danny to talk about his time before, during and after Watford. His flame shone bright but brief at Vicarage Road but it burnt ever so importantly.

EMERGENCY POD We weren't going to do a podcast this week. WATFORD 3-2 CARDIFF
In a dominant performance, that threaten to be a capitulation by the end, the Hornets got their first win in a wee while. Jon, Mike and Colin chat about how the performance shows how far the hornets have come and how exciting we can really be (and we don't dwell on the two Cardiff goals).
They also report from the clubs Reunion event with the 1999 playoff winning side getting together at Shendish Manor this last week.
EVERTON 2-2 WATFORD
One of those games where the result doesn't match the feeling. Jon and Jason head to the pub to watch the game, Mike and Colin sending int their thoughts as the game progressed. A great rollercoaster of a match, which we hope can start the revival as we head into Christmas.

Jon, Mike, Jason and Colin were given back stage access to Watford Palace Theatre, on Sunday 18th November, as Adam Leventhal launched the 7th book in the Tales from The Vicarage Series.
'Captains' documents 11 former Watford Captains from the late 60s through to the modern day. Live at the event saw Dennis Booth, one of GT's early captain in the late 70s, double promotion winner Robert Page, and leader of Aidy Boothroyd's play off winning team - Gavin Mahon.
SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 WATFORD

Another Tales from The Vicarage Live and FTRE were given special access to backstage so we could talk to the captains on show.
Now in it's 7th edition, this year's Tales From The Vicarage, out in November, focuses on the men who have worn the armband for Watford. And at this event we heard from Wilf Rostron, Les Taylor and Neil Cox.
Jon, Jason and Colin spoke to the three former Hornets, in the depth of the Watford Palace Thearte as well with host Adam Leventhal on what was another great evening.
WATFORD 2-1 SPURS
Yeah... we beat Spurs, for the first time in over 30 years. After a fantastic win, Jon, Jason and Colin discuss a comeback win for the Hornets which will be remembered by us and the rest of the League for a good while.
The boys also discuss the League Cup win away at Reading, and all the new boys that were on show, plus Colin talks about why Javi Gracia is really awesome!
As one of only 3 men to get Watford promoted to the Premier League, Aidy Boothroyd arrived at Vicarage Road in 2005, with little fanfare and a lot of questions. However, the following season was a whirlwind, which, as we all know, led to promotion in an emphatic win in the 2006 Championship Play Off final against Leeds at the Millennium Stadium.
His time at Watford ended, like so many managers, badly in 2008 and in this Catching Up with Jon talks with Aidy at St George’s Park, where he now leads the next generation of young England players, as the Coach of England Under 21. They discuss his time as the Manager of Watford and now, 10 years on, how he reflects and looks back on his impact, signings and life since leaving The Vic.

Back for the final podcast in preseason, Jon and Colin were at Vicarage Road to see the unveiling of the Graham Taylor Statue. You'll hear some moments of the ceremony, the reaction of Lionel Birnie, author of Graham's autobiography, and we hear your memories of meeting Graham.
In terms of football, preseason has come to an end, but Jon and Colin briefly discuss the game against Sampdoria.
With more stamina and energy than a Lucozade factory, Andy Hessenthaler played over 200 games for the Hornets on a pair 'good legs' and never played a game at less than 100%.

This brand new podcast series, where we, along with fellow watford fan Lionel Birnie, talk to the people who have played a part in Watford's History, whether it on or off the pitch. Jason, Jon and Jordi talk through the home win that takes us past 40 points and well and truly safe.
Jon was also at a special event, where the club have put a gravestone onto a previously unmarked grave of Jonny Goodall. Who was Johnny and what does he mean to our club? Jon talked to Geoff Wicken about the man they called Allgood.

WATFORD 0-0 CRYSTAL PALACE:
An enjoyable 0-0, which puts Watford on 38 points. Jon, Jas and Mike gather to converse about the game, the 4-4-2, the returning centre backs and if having two up front made a difference.
There's a report from Russia, DCW is over there ahead of the World Cup with work, and they discuss longer managers.
HUDDERSFIELD 1-0 WATFORD:
History is repeating, and not just because we've lost two weeks in a row. Jon and Colin talk through the defeat to the Terriers and then it's time for Mike to really share his worries and his plans for the summer.
They also talk to Andy from Prostrate Cancer about the battle against the disease and what Watford fans can do to support the charity.
WATFORD 1-2 BURNLEY:
Mike, Jas and Jon talk abuot the scrimmage with Burnley, which we lost! The boys make Mike talk through the positives first, before picking apart where the last 20 minutes went so wrong, so very quickly.
There's also discussions about the expansion of Vicarage Road and where we need to strengthen the squad over the summer.
WATFORD 2-2 BOURNEMOUTH
A late equaliser felt like a loss, but Jon, Jason, DCW and Mike gathered to talk about the game, where opportunities were missed and where we can be positive going into the last 6 games.
And with the clubs annual At Our Place fans event, the boys went along and reflect on what was said, plus speak to Anwar Uddin, Diversity and Campaigns manager at the Football Supporters Federation, about his work around the country and what we can do as Watford fans to keep growing the diversity in our club.

Watford 1-1 Spurs Watford were held by a ten man Spurs on Saturday, in a surprisingly enjoyable game. Jon, Mike and Colin talk through the performance, the squad choices, the worst Watford home game ever and we look ahead to 8 games in 32 days.
Watford 2-4 Manchester United
It seemed all over in the space of about 14 minutes, but Watford did make the match look vaguely interesting in the end. Jon, Mike and DCW talk through the match and the BIG 5 who have visited Vicarage Road already this season!
Newcastle United 0-3 Watford A back to back wins, back to back clean sheets and back to back Uniteds. In a shorter podcast, another will be out after the Manchester United game, Jon chats to Colin about a a comfortable Watford win, and not just because of the 3-0 score line.
Watford 2-0 West Ham The Hornets were back to winning ways against West Ham, however much they wanted to punch our lights out. A strong performances and first Premier League goal for Will Hughes, plus Ricky from Rio continues to shine.
Of course the Marco Silva rumours from the last few weeks are discussed, I mean we couldn't ignore it, however much we tried.

EVERTON 3-2 WATFORD How did we not win that game? Jon, Mike, DCW and Jordi talk through the game and well fell more than deflated. The Hornets were cruising at 2-0, but some how lost the game and missed a last minute penalty!!
WATFORD 0-1 STOKE Jon, Mike and Jason are joined by old friend Curtis from Denver, who's not been at Vicarage Road for a few years. We didn't get to see the Watford we've fallen in love with, and they boys do their best to talk through the game and get past how Stoke Stoke were.
CHELSEA 4-2 WATFORD With a result that didn't reflect the performance, the Hornets may have left Stanford Bridge frustrated, but, on the morning after, Jon calls Mike, Colin Mace and Olly Wicken to talk through the positives of the game. Did Deeney have the impact we all hoped, will Ricky from Rio recover from the results and what can we expect from the latest series of Hornet Heaven?

Former Watford Academy chief, and FTRE regular, Nick Cox was back at Vicarage Road for the U21 match - Watford v Sheff Utd. Nick was always fantastic to tell us what was going on about Elite Player Performance Programme and when Mike was at the game he grabbed a few minutes with Nick to see how Watford are looking in terms of Yooff from the outside.
