There are some very upsetting men’s mental health statistics that should encourage us all to advocate for much needed change & much greater dialogue to improve men's mental health.
Globally, on average 1 man is dying, every minute, of every day from suicide (movember.com).
What we need to remember when we often read or hear a health statistic - is that every number is representative of someone’s dad, son, grandson, uncle, best mate, husband, soul mate, brother that has lost their life to suicide.
It is time, we all take more time in our life to listen & seek help from people we trust & when needed seek support from highly experienced & registered psychologist to help us all take better care & prioritise our mental health!

I cannot imagine how frightening and shocking it must feel to be diagnosed with cancer. Not only are you needing to process your diagnosis but, then you are told by your specialist that the cancer treatment options available have the potential to often harm healthy tissue while treating a cancerous tumour.
What I learnt recently from spending time with Crystal at Blue Dot Army is that there is a new type of radiation treatment available that can treat many types of tumours in the prostate, spine, brain, lungs, pancreas, head and neck which is so accurate & precise in the delivering of radiation that it can target & kill cancerous cells in real time while minimalizing radiation exposure to healthy tissues and organs that leads to less painful side effects & is extremely effective in treating cancer.
Giving HOPE to people when they need it the most.
Today on MediTalk we are speak with Peter Podias the Clinical Operations Director & a highly experienced Radiation Therapist at 5D clinic in Perth to learn all about CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery.

Andy’s story touched Crystal and the Blue Dot Army were called into action.
Andy while caring for a severely disabled loved one, found himself being confronted with a diagnosis of Prostate Cancer. And somehow he had to figure out how he could get from Cairns to Perth during COVID – 19 state border restrictions for greatly needed Cyberknife robotic radiotherapy for a 4+3 Glesson Score 7 tumor.

Did you know this week is 'World Continence Week'?
It's time for us all to ask ourselves the following questions:
Do you have to rush to use the toilet?
Are you frequently nervous at the thought that you might lose control of your bladder or bowel?
Do you wake up twice or more during the night to go to the toilet?
Do you sometimes leak when you lift something heavy, sneeze, cough or laugh?
Do you sometimes leak when you exercise or play sport?
Do you strain to empty your bowel?
Incontinence is defined as any accidental or involuntary loss of urine, bowel motion, or wind.
Incontinence can affect children and adults of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds.
Incontinence is an extremely common condition, yet sadly many people suffer in silence being too embarrassed to seek help. According, to the Continence Foundation of Australia, over 5 million Australians have bladder or bowel control problems for a variety of reasons.
To help us better understand continence I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Mary King - a Nurse Practitioner of 40 years who has specialised in this area of medicine. Mary diagnoses and manages continence - urology in people aged 18 - 100+ years at Sir Charles Gairdener Hospital, in Perth.
I hope you have found this podcast episode of value and if you feel it can help others please share.

Radiation therapy for breast cancer can entail a number of visits, over a number of weeks.
But what if I was to say, for suitable cases one targeted dose of radiotherapy can now be delivered directly into the breast, at the time a person is undergoing breast cancer surgery.

If you would have told me in January this year that by March people all around the world would be affected by a virus from a bat. Whereby, hundreds of thousands of lives would be lost and people’s livelihoods taken away from them and life as we know it would be significantly changed - I just wouldn’t have believed you!
Some days it just feels so surreal that in such a short period of time human beings all around the world are experiencing so much change to our day to day lives, all at the same time.
Well today on Meditalk I speak with Dr Astrid Arellano an Infectious Disease Specialist at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco, who will help us make sense of it all and provide us with some much needed practical advice & share her knowledge on what we now call COVID-19.
In the interview Dr Arellano explains some of the terminology we are hearing in the media such as; 'flattening of the curve', what exactly does that mean and how does it affect us?
Since COVID-19 we now see people at the shops wearing masks and gloves - should we all be doing this?
And when you go to the shops can you become infected by COVID-19 buy handling of fruit, vegetables and items from the shelf & from the shopping trolley?
Can we contract COVID-19 from our online deliveries?
Can we contract COVID-19 from other animals like the family dog?
Can you suffer from COVID-19 twice?
Should we be having the flu shot this year?
What is the treatment for COVID-19?
How long before a vaccine?
Why are some people suffering mild symptoms of COVID-19 and other people are fighting for their life in ICU?
When will this virus end?
If you want to attain some quality and practical information on COVID-19 please take the time to listen to Dr Arellano answer these questions and many more.
A big thank you to St John of God Hospital in Subiaco and Dr Arellano for all your support in co-ordinating this special episode of Meditalk.

In December 2017 in Australia, the Cervical Screening Test replaced what we commonly call the Pap Test.
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers women can die from and a routine cervical screening test can save a woman’s life.
Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV; this is the biggest risk factor for cervical cancer. So it is really important we screen for HPV in healthy women through a cervical screening test.
Today on Meditalk I speak with Dr Stuart Salfinger who is a Gynaecologic Oncologist to talk about Cervical Screening.
Dr Stuart Salfinger informs us on what changes were made to the national cervical screening program, how the changes in the program effect women, how a cervical screening test differs from a pap test and what exactly is involved.
Education and effective screening programs are key to preventing diseases such as; cervical cancer.

In this MeditalkPodcast episode I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Rebecca Ray a Clinical Psychologist, Speaker & Author about vicarious trauma and the art of self-kindness.
Kindness is defined as having qualities of friendliness, generosity and consideration. And having a genuine concern and care for others.
In fact, science has shown that by devoting resources to others, rather than for oneself can enhance one's well-being.
Rebecca's most recent book the Art of Self-Kindness is one of the most beautiful books I have read for a very long time as it talks to the heart of the importance of how giving to yourself needs to be made a priority for a healthy mind and soul.
I also asked Dr Rebecca Ray to talk about vicarious trauma as with Australians recently suffering in the last year from such devastating droughts & bushfires learning about this form of trauma may help people to emotionally heal from witnessing and living through very challenging times in our life.
I hope you learn and enjoy as much as did from this conversation with Dr Rebecca Ray - a very wise, kind and talented soul - thank you!

According to Diabetes Australia, 280 Australians develop diabetes every day which equates to one person every 5 minutes.
In 2017-2018 approximately 1 million Australian adults had type 2 diabetes. Being overweight does in fact increase your risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes.
Based on a number of significiant trials that have been published over the years Endocrinologists who medically take care of many diabetic patients as well as, GPs are now considering and discussing with people who are struggling with their weight and suffering type 2 diabetes a referral to seek the specialist advice of a bariatric surgeon to see if weightloss surgery is a possible treatment option for helping people lose significant amounts of weight which in turn greatly assists in people being able to manage their type 2 diabetes.
So today, I speak with Dr Jon Armstrong a Bariatric, General and Endocrine Surgeon about treating type 2 diabetes with weight-loss surgery. Dr Armstrong sheds light on this topic to help to inform people when they are perhaps considering weight-loss surgery as an option to better manage their diabetes.

Have you ever been asked to be in a clinical trial? Have you ever wondered what is involved in a clinical trial?
Clinical trials help to determine whether new and existing medicines and medical practices are safe and effective in treating particular diseases and conditions. And even though medicines are tested thoroughly in laboratories human clinical trials assist doctors to further better understand if the new medicines being offered are any better than older ones as well as, they can help to determine correct dosages of medicine to optimise treatment regimes.
Today on Meditalk I speak with Professor Steve Webb an Intensivist and Director of Clinical Trials at St John of God Hospital Subiaco so we all can learn more about what is involved in clinical trials and why they are so important to advancing medical care and treatment.

Essentially lung surgery is when a part of the lung is either repaired or removed. Some people who have been diagnosed with lung cancer may be offered lung surgery as treatment.
So, today I speak with Dr Chris Merry a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Fiona Stanley Hospital and at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco to learn more about Lung Surgery.
Dr Merry explains what is generally involved when having lung surgery and how this surgery has given much hope to people suffering from a number of lung diseases including; lung cancer. After speaking with Dr Merry I was in absolute awe in how truly incredible our lungs are at adapting to having parts of the lung removed and still being able to breathe and function.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Australia. According to the Cancer Council, it is responsible for almost one in five people dying of cancer in Australia.
Very sadly there is often a stigma associated with lung cancer that it is a cancer only associated with smoker’s and that they bring it upon themselves. Well one of the key lessons learnt from this interview is that many people that are diagnosed with lung cancer have never touched a cigarette in their life. So in order to attain a better understanding on Lung Cancer I speak with Dr Tim Clay who is a Medical Oncologist specialising in lung and breast cancer at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco.
Dr Clay provides us with a great overview of lung cancer but, he also gives an excellent update on current research and treatment of this disease.

According to Quit Australia if you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, or have a cigarette in the first half hour after waking up, you are considered a person who has an addition to nicotine.
Is this you or a loved one?
Many quit campaigns over the years have educated us of how smoking can cause significant harm to our health. But quitting smoking is easier said than done!
Vaping has come into the picture and more recently there has been media reports of vaping causing death to young vapers in the US. So should vapers be concerned?
So what should we believe?
Is all smoking, cigarettes or vaping as equally bad for our health? And how exactly can you quit a highly addicted substance such as; nicotine?
So I felt it would be of value to speak to an expert in this area – Associate Professor Mendelsohn who is the chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association (ATHRA) and he also has his own specialist practice in Double Bay where he helps and supports people to quit smoking.

October in Australia is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed by the age of 85.
Over the years, thanks to Australia's national breast cancer screening program, public health campaigns and more effective treatments being offered there has been significant improvements in early diagnosis and breast cancer survival rates.
However, despite these positive factors every day we still have 42 Australian women being diagnosed and 7 women will lose their life to breast cancer.
So why do women get breast cancer? What are the risk factors and warning signs women should be aware of to seek out medical advice? Are there ways we can reduce our risk of breast cancer? Should we still be proactively checking our breasts for lumps? Why are seeing young and older women being diagnosed with breast cancer? How young should women be breast aware? What are the most effective ways of treating breast cancer? What is the latest in breast cancer research?
Today on Meditalk we speak with Professor Christobel Saunders who is recognised as one of Australia's most prominent research orientated cancer surgeons consulting at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco.
In 2017, Professor Saunders won the Premier's Science Award for Scientist of the Year which recognised her outstanding achievements in breast cancer research which continue to greatly help the lives of people affected by cancer.
In this interview Professor Saunders answers many questions about breast cancer to assist us to become better informed and breast cancer aware.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) can be life threatening.
A AAA is when the part of the aorta that resides within the abdomen becomes bigger and bursts. Unfortuately, a AAA can develop slowly and not present with any symptoms. Occassionally people may feel a pulse near their belly button, or a pain in their back or stomach.
Thankfully a thorough medical check up with a doctor can at times incidentally diagnose a AAA through investigations being conducted such as; vascular ultrasound imaging.
Dr Peter Bray(Vascular Surgeon) today on MeditalkPodcast helps us better understand what is a AAA and how can a AAA be diagnosed and treated.
If you are concerned about your health please make the time and speak with a medical pratitioner.

Quite often what first comes to mind when thinking about breast surgery is breast implants or women seeking breast surgery for cosmetic reasons. However, with 1 in 8 women in Australia are being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and in 2018 breast cancer still remained the most common cancer women suffer from worldwide. Many women around the world everyday are undergoing breast surgery due to being diagnosed with breast cancer. For many women battling breast cancer they are also faced with making decisions about breast reconstruction and breast implants when a plastic surgeon may require to remove a breast to treat or prevent breast cancer. As well as, how best to restore the shape of the breast after needing to have a mastectomy. Breast surgery is major surgery and it is vital women have credible information to read and listen too to help their process of making an informed decision.
Dr Mark Lee is a highly respected specialist plastic surgeon at St John of God Hospital, Subiaco who specialises in asethetic surgery of the face, breast and body. Dr Mark Lee helped to answer many questions about breast reconstruction and the vary types of reconstructive surgical procedures now available. As well as, he shed some light on breast implants and in particularly he assisted to explain the most recent concerns about textured breast implants and their associated risk to a rare type of cancer of the immune system (BIA-ALCL).

Many people worldwide are living with chronic pain!
It is estimated globally that 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain which just seems uncomprehensible. Making pain a global public health concern.
According to Pain Australia, ''one in five Australians are living with chronic pain and the prevalence increases to one in three people over the age of 65''.
Suffering from chronic pain can take its toll on people mentally, physically and socially as it can lead to living a life of isolation as they are often unable to participate in activities that enhance one's quality of life.
Diagnosing and managing chronic pain can be complex, takes time and everyone's experience of pain is individual. For this reason when speaking on chronic pain it was important to provide quality information on pain and pain management by speaking to a medical specialist in pain management - Dr Paul Graziotti who is a Pain Medicine Physician & Anaesthetist.
In this interview with Dr Paul Graziotti provided an excellent overview of what is pain, the different types of pain, how is pain diagnosed and the varying treatment options available to help manage chronic pain. Dr Graziotti was asked in the interview about the use of opiods, medical marijuana, surgery, injections, physiotherapy and the many other treatment options that may be offered to people and used to treat chronic pain.
A big thank you to Dr Graziotti for giving his time and sharing his years of expertise and knowledge on Pain with us all in this interview!

Did you know the largest blood vessel in our body is the Aorta. The aorta's job is to transport oxygenated blood from our heart to the rest of the body. And within our Aorta are some very special valves called Aortic valves that help to send our blood in the right direction. Valves are the much needed traffic controllers of blood directing it to where it needs to go. Unfortuately, we often take these parts of our body for granted until sadly they are not functioning properly and as we age so too are our heart valves!
Our heart valves work quietly pumping blood in the right direction around our heart and body without any fuss. But without their hard work and dedication to task we just cannot survive.
Unfortuately though in an aging population our heart valves can become calcified and over time suffer wear and tear. Also, people can be born with heart valves which do not function optimally.
Aortic stenosis is one of the most common and most serious valve disease that people can suffer. So I spoke with cardiologist Dr Eric Yamen about this condition and what is new in terms of treatment for this debilitating heart condition.
A big thank you to Dr Eric Yamen for giving his time to chat to MediTalkPodcast and sharing his knowledge on Aortic Stenosis and letting us know about a new procedure called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) which is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that repairs the valve and for suitable patients this procedure can be life changing.

According to the Cancer Council of Australia, ''1 in 2 Australian men and women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 and currently cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia.''
Cancer sadly is such a common medical disease there wouldn't be many people in the world that haven't been touched by cancer either themselves, a loved one or friend they know have had a battle with cancer.
When people talk and hear about cancer very unconsciously in our minds we have preconceived ideas about cancer and chemotherapy which may or may not be true. These misunderstandings around both cancer and chemotherapy can in fact be very unkind for the sufferer who is facing the fight of their life.
So I thought it would be a good idea to discuss with Dr Andrew Dean an Oncologist at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco and clarify some of the common cancer myths and misconceptions. And by doing so, with greater understanding of the facts about cancer versus fiction we can be more compassionate and hopeful for people who are fighting cancer battles to become the strength and belief in their life when they need it the most!

One in five Australians experience uncomfortable symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome is commonly referred too as IBS. IBS affects our large bowel which is actually the part of the digestive tract that stores our faeces. Because it is such a common condition I thought it was important to start talking about it and interview a consultant that specialises in diagnosing and treating IBS.
Dr Levitt is a General and Colorectal Surgeon at St John of God Hospital (SJOGH) in Subiaco, Dr Levitt has a particular interest in the management of 'functional' bowel disorders including; constipation, incontinence and irritable bowel syndrome. Dr Levitt is extremely well published and his more recent book is appropriately titled the 'Happy Bowel'.
So how do you turn an irritable bowel to a happy one? What exactly is irritable bowel syndrome? Why do some people get IBS and others don't? How is IBS diagnosed? Treatment options for IBS? What is the difference or is there a difference between IBS and IBD? Does Colon Cleansing work? Should we be eating more fibre, drinking more water is that the answer to an unhappy bowel? Should we be eating more foods that take care of our microbiome?
Dr Levitt answered these questions and more providing some practical tips throughout the discussion giving us all a better understanding on IBS.
An important take away from the interview was that IBS is a functional disorder of the colon and the good news is that this condition does not cause long term affects to our health. However, IBS can be very painful and for sufferers it can really impact someones quality of life. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is treatable and manageable with good medical advice and support. You don't have to suffer and be in pain every day. It is just about having the courage to seek help and talk openly about our bowels and bowel movements and if you are troubled with the symptoms of IBS it is always a good idea to talk to a medical pracitioner you feel comforable to chat too who knows alot about this particular area of medicine.
As a society we often don't feel comfortable to talk about our bowels but, with IBS being so commonly experienced maybe its time to talk more openly about our bowel movements and even think about them differently. Dr Levitt made it clear that we all assume our bowels should work miraculously like clock work everyday but, that is just not the case. We are all individuals and all of our bowels function differently and they can be dysfunctional in how they work.
If you are interested in learning more about IBS then take a listen to this interview. MeditalkPodcast is available to listen too on iTunes, Apple Podcasts App, SoundCloud, Spotify and your favourite podcasts apps.

Recently I spent time doing some voluntary work with young children and I noticed a toodler having difficulty with speaking and being understood which was causing him quite alot of frustration. After asking his teacher why he was struggling so much with his speech she mentioned that he had top teeth that were protruding and said this was quite commonly observed in children who at an older age were still sucking their thumb and using pacificers.
This then got me thinking and speaking with friends, family and educators of young children about the topic of thumb-sucking and the use of pacificers. I noted a real mix of opinion of people who thought it was completely harmless to give a child a pacifier and what people thought of the habit of thumb-sucking.
So in researching this health topic what was surprising to me is that babies can often be seen on ultrasound sucking their thumb in utero. And if fact the sucking reflex is one of the most important reflexes a newborn baby develops as it enables their ability to eat. However, how long should a child be thumb sucking for and how long should they be given pacifiers as a way to self-soothe is the question? And should we be worried if these habits go on for too long and could they cause major orthodontic work as they get older?
So, I thought I would speak to an Orthodontist who treats and manages children's teeth Dr Sanjana from Class 1 Orthodontics and ask her some questions about baby and child teeth development as well as, find out the truth about thumb-sucking and the use of pacficiers and how they affect children's teeth.
A big thankyou to Dr Sanjana for giving of her time and knowledge.
Dr Sanjana Baksi completed her Bachelor of Dental Science (Hons) at UWA and subsequently worked as a dentist in Perth in private and in indigenous oral health. Shen then undertook and completed her orthodontic specialist training at The University of Adelaide. Contraception today is more safe, well tolerated, reliable and cost effective than ever before which is wonderful. Contraception gives us all the ability to choose if and when we may like to try for a baby in our life.
Unfortuately, we hear sometimes negative stories from friends or the media about varying contraception methods that have put us off exploring our options more fully.
Sometimes with more choice, comes more confusion so MediTalkPodcast was able to spend time with Sexual Health Quarters (SHQ) Medical Director Dr Richelle Douglas to ask the questions we need answered to help us make the best decision for us about contraception.
Dr Douglas provides us all an overview of what is new in contraception and answers our common questions and concerns. Some of the excellent questions Dr Douglas answers in the interview are:
What contraception should I consider if I am worried about the affect of hormones? What contraception offers the best cover? Do IUD's hurt? What is the truth about IUDs, implants and depo injections? How long do the varying birth control options provide cover for nowadays? Where can you have your implanon inserted? Is there long term side effects to taking contraception? Can I still get pregnant after being on contraception for years? What if I have issues with acne, what is the best contraception to go on to help my skin and for good birth control? Does skipping having my period okay when taking on contraception okay?
Please take some time out of our day to get the facts on what's new in contraception and listen to a doctor who specialises in sexual health help answer some of our questions on contraception.
If you have additional questions or would like to reach out to SHQ all there details are noted below. Also your local medical practitioner (GP) is a great resource as well for contraception information and guidance.

When you eat are you satisfying hunger or an emotion?
When you are feeling lonely, sad, frustrated and stressed out do you feel this overwhelming need to eat!
You are not alone!
In the western world where there seems to be an abundance of food full of fat and sugar nothing seems to feed our emotions better and as fast as eating a packet of biscuits or tub of icecream...
Problem is for a lot of us the satisfaction you feel after eating this food is short lived and you then begin to feel embarassed and shamed.
This particular eating cycle can perpetuate throughout our life to become a habit that you wished you could break.
Today we speak with Dr Katherine Iscoe (Dr Kat) who has experienced her own eating struggles in the past but, is specialised in helping people overcome them.
Dr Kat shares her knowledge to help people better understand who they are and what is driving certain behaviours and it is through attaining this knowledge comes empowerment and positive change!

Eating Disorders Are A Real Concern!
According to the National Eating Disorder Association up to 70 million people (men&women)suffer from an eating disorder and the prevalence globally is increasing.
Eating disorders are not just a case of a person eating more or less food. People suffering an eating disorder are in fact suffering from a mental illness.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness and the suicide rates of anorexia are 32 times higher than that of the general population.
When someone suffers from an eating disorders it affects relationship dynamics within families, friends and communities.
Meditalk speaks with Dr Vash Singh who is a Psychiatrist at Hollywood Private Hospital who specialises in eating disorders. It is so important as a society we all gain a better understanding of eating disorders to greater empathise and be able to support people suffering from this very serious health condition.

Anyone, at anytime in their life can suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This is why it is just so important we talk and learn more about PTSD.
Dr Mathew Samuel is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Hollywood Hospital who specialises in this area and shares his knowledge with us all about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Post traumatic Stress Disorder is commonly referred to as PTSD and it is an anxiety disorder.
Some people develop PTSD after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event and it can make a person feel highly anxious, fearful and disturbed by upsetting thoughts and memories of a traumatic event.
Everyday people serve in the military, drive cars, work as a police officer, fight fires, take care of people in hospital, attend to accidents and customers at a petrol station, in a delicatessen or bank or get caught in a natural diaster or crisis. A news story that we may watch on TV or hear about involving people may also end up suffering from PTSD.
Did you know, the most common cause of PTSD are car accidents.
Situations in our life happen and many of which are out of our control and how we respond and what we witness does affect us in ways at the time we do not understand until some times after the event.
This is why it is so important to understand more PTSD as in life ourselves, a loved one we live with or a friend may suffer from PTSD and knowing more about it can really help us seek help sooner and greater empathise with one another.
The good news is that with support and treatment many people can make a full recovery.

Iron is involved in all cellular functions in the body so when our body is deficient in iron it can significantly affect our health and our quality of life.
Iron deficiency is a major global health concern as it affects men, women and children of all ages. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates it affects up to 25% of the world's population which equates to 2 billion people.
Iron deficiency is the most common type of Anaemia. Iron Deficiency can make us feel fatigued, breathless, can cause us to have difficulty in exercising, increase our susceptibility to infection and affect our ability to concentrate and is also related to restless leg syndrome.
According to Dr Jayasuriya low iron levels have also been associated to depression, post natal depression and iron deficiency is also considered the commonest nutritional disorder.
In addition, women on restricted diets particularly need to be aware on their iron levels as well as people who donate blood regularly.
Interestingly, iron deficiency in adults and children has also been associated to learning and behavioural difficulties such as; ADHD.
Dr Jayasuriya a General Practitioner(GP) from Next Practice in Cloverdale was the first GP to co-ordinate an iron clinic in a primary care setting in Australia. Dr Jayasuriya is considered both nationally and internationally as a expert in iron deficiency and so we were very thankful for him sharing his knowledge with us all on this important health topic.
He mentioned after the interview that 80% of the women he sees in clinic have been diagnosed with iron deficiency and stressed that iron deficiency is very much a women's health issue. So please women take the time to listen to this podcast interview and learn more about your iron and chat with your doctor if you are concerned.
Essentially, the fact that iron has such an important role in our body and that iron deficiency can affect men, women and children and how having low iron affects how we feel, move and think it is paramount we all learn more about iron by listening to this interview and taking on board some great iron health tips from Dr Jayasuriya and being aware of our iron levels is a great take away message from this podcast episode.

What do you know about ovarian cancer?
Do you know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer?
Do you think a pap smear detects ovarian cancer?
Simple questions but, how many women would not know the correct answers to these questions? I was one of those women and I am sure I am not alone!
Having a greater awareness of this type of gynaecological cancer can really help women around the world feel more comfortable to reach out and speak with their doctor.
In Australian February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and later in the year on May 8th we not only acknowledge 'Mothers Day' but we also mark this day in our calendar as 'World Ovarian Cancer Day'.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, "ovarian cancer is the 18th most common cancer worldwide. There were nearly 300,000 new cases of ovarian cancer in 2018''.
Sadly, in Australia approximately 1600 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer each year. And every day in Australia, four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and three will die from the disease.
Ovarian cancer generally describes a malignant tumour that starts in one or both ovaries. The signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer can be quite common signs and symptoms of other health conditions such as; excessive fatigue, persistant bloating and stomach pain.
For this reason, it is paramount as women we become more aware of ovarian cancer to empower ourselves with knowledge and feel okay to start a discussion with our doctor about ovarian cancer if we are concerned.
Increasing our knowledge and awareness of ovarian cancer at this stage is the best way currently we have to reduce our risk of suffering from this disease.
To learn more about ovarian cancer I was honored to speak with a courageous woman called Kristin who is living with ovarian cancer which is currently in remission and Kristin continues to fight the statistics. Through her individual ovarian cancer journey we all can take away some key messages to increase our knowledge of this type of gynaecological cancer.
In the interview we discuss the common signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, ways ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the BRCA gene link to ovarian cancer, treatment and current research being conducted in ovarian cancer.
If you have a mum, sister, best-girlfriend, aunt or nan share Kristin's journey with them so together as women around the world we become more health empowered through increasing our awareness of ovarian cancer.
A big thank you to Kristin Young for kindly sharing her story with us all and to Ovarian Cancer Australia for all the wonderful support they co-ordinate and provide to Australian women.

At some point in our life unfortuately ourselves or a loved one may need to attend a medical appointment or spend time in hospital.
Thanks to the internet and doctor google we can type in a medical condition and can read, listen and watch a lot of medical information which may or may not always be relevant to our own personal situation.
Medical advancement nowadays in terms of surgery particularly is incredible however, how many questions are we asking before saying 'yes' to medical procedures and how confident do we feel when signing medical consent forms?
Please consider the following questions:
What do we really understand about informed medical consent? Are we reading fully our consent forms before signing? Do you leave medical appointments pondering and worrying about un-answered medical questions? Are we asking enough questions when making medical decisions that can affect our health in the long term? What questions could we be asking of medical professionals that can really help us with our medical decision-making?
Decisions we make about our medical care often have long term implications to our health and our quality of life. The information we discuss in this podcast episode may really help us as healthcare consumers feel more empowered to have our individual needs better met.
I speak with Dr Matthew Anstey who is an Intensivist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Western Australia, who also is the current chair of the Choosing Wisely Australia advisory group. Dr Anstey summarises for us five key questions that can help us when making medical decisions.
Choosing Wisely 5 Key Questions: 1. Do I really need this test or procedure? 2. What are the risks? 3. Are there simpler, safer options? 4. What happens if I don't do anything? 4. What are the costs?

Dr Anstey mentions in the interview we don't necessarily need to ask all 5 questions but, perhaps 1 or 2 of the questions may help to facilitate good discussion between yourself and your doctor.
We also speak with Pip Brennan the Executive Director of the Health Consumers Council of WA about informed consent. Pip highlighted when making decisions about medical procedures consider asking the proceduralist how many of a particular procedure have they conducted? And the outcomes patients' have had from these procedures?
For more information on informed consent from Health Consumers' Council visit:
www.hconc.org.au
Both Dr Anstey and Pip provide some insightful information to assist us to make the right decisions for our health, quality of life and our back pocket as sometimes these medical decisions not only can be quite costly both financially but also to our health in the long term.
Have you ever wondered how much do our thoughts, our emotions affect how we feel?
Does what we think affect our physical health?
As explained by Sue Langley (keynote speaker, global consultant and positive leadership expert) Langley Group CEO provides an example in the interview that many of us can relate too; when you are feeling tired after a long day at work, feeling stressed, exhaused lacking self awareness you may be more inclined to be attracted to eating unhealthy foods, drink alcohol and smoke which in the long term can negatively impact our physical health. On the other hand, if you have a high EQ and experience the same tiring day at work with strong self awareness you may be better able to perceive, regulate and manage your emotions more effectively. Operating from a higher self awareness despite how you are physicaily feeling you will still after a long day at work choose to eat healthy foods despite what you are craving.
There is alot of talk about the importance of emotional intelligence (EQ) in assisting to achieve success in business and in leadership positions. But does our emotional intelligence (EQ) affect our health?
I spoke with Sue Langley who is a Master Trainer of MSCEIT (an emotional intelligence ability based assessment) to help us answer this key question - Does our EQ affect our Health? Sue defines, "emotional intelligence as simply the intelligent way of using our emotions''.
Sue also speaks about the latest clinical research in EQ that links EQ to our gut microbiome? So fascinating!
Find out more about emotional intelligence (EQ) and its affect on our health by listening to MediTalkPodcast on iTunes, Soundcloud and your podcasts app . As well as find out what exactly is EQ? How do you assess it? Why is our EQ important? And can our EQ affect our overall health and wellbeing?

You have the Zone, Atkins, Keto, Raw Food, Vegan, High Protein, No Carb, No Sugar, Gluten Free Diet.. And now recently I have been reading about the benefits of Intermittent Fasting...
All this talk about the varying diets can at times get very confusing to know what is fact or fiction and what we should and should not be eating.
Coming into the festive season can be a time of over indulgence when it comes to food and alcohol intake. And come the New Year we often feel guilty of what and how much we have been eating and how this has affected our weight.
So thankfully Sarah Flanagan a leading Australian Dietitian who has worked overseas and in Australia in both the public and private sector provides some good practical advice on Diets and Dieting as well as, how we can survive festive feasting!
A big thank you to Sarah Flanagan - Dietitian www.advancesurgical.com.au

It's time to talk about a health issue that affects many brothers, sisters, mums, dads, grandparents, friends, children - families. By talking about Post Natal Depression (PND) and learning how common it is experienced in the community by men and women for a variety of reasons, the more we can encourage each other to reach out to seek professional support when we need it the most.
Knowledge is not only empowering but, it can also lead to greater empathy for people who are going through a difficult time.
I was inspired to do this podcast interview on PND after a conversation with a lovely lady in a cafe who I didn't know and we were talking about MediTalk and she expressed how she suffered PND and what a difficult time it was for her and how she felt more people should talk about it and said to me ''you need to do a podcast and inform more people about PND". So when I make a promise to someone, I follow through. My hope is that this podcast does get us all talking more freely and openly about PND as well as, show more compassion for others going through such a difficult time particularly for new parents who need understanding, love and support and not judgement.
