Thanksgiving and Black Fridays are not the only things happenings in the month of November. As college applications are due and seniors can eat their turkey knowing they did their best, I sit down with my cousin Jennifer and my brother Evellard as they speak about their first semesters in college. Jennifer, studying integrated neuroscience at Binghamton while Evellard studies psychology at Queens College, these two STEM students tell me about their college expectations and realities.
This very funny episode is brought to you all by my uncle Domingo. He makes the best mango margaritas and while doing so, he schools me in the art of drinking like a Dominican. Conducted totally in both Spanish and English, this episode gives you a sneak peak into my crazy Dominican family!
Domingo’s Mamajuana Recipe: Besides collecting the appropriate branches, you will need: Honey/Miel Red wine/Vino Cinnamon/ Canela Raisins/ Pasas (optional)
Cure it for at least 2 months!
Domingo’s hungover cure called: Aguajil After a night of drinking, you can wake up and make yourself the following:
Garlic/ajo Cilantro
Boil and drink to relief symptoms. This is not just for headaches but the body ache that also comes from drinking.
Consult your doctor before drinking the aguajil.
And always: drink responsibly!

The holidays are just around the corner and so is the shopping season. On this episode I sit down with psychology student and friend Tiffany Camacho to speak about the psychology behind consumerism. We speak on marketing strategies advertizers use to lore us into shopping for what we dont need, the pressures of fitting in and creating a person around the items we buy, the values we place on items and emotional shopping. We also explore a few tips and tricks to think about and employ when you go shopping: "Do I really need this?"

Continuing with scary stories from Latin America, this week, we didn't find a legend but an actual scary encounter. Join my friend Eva and I as we discuss this true ghost story from Honduras.

The story essentially is about:
La Casa Matusita has gained the reputation for being the most haunted building in Latin America.
This casa is an innocent enough looking yellow structure in Lima, Peru’s center. However many locals claim it is haunted. It sits at the intersection of Garcilaso de la Vega and Espana.
There are several tales as to why some believe this building contains tortured ghosts.
During a formal dinner party the guests were all given a hallucinogenic, which caused them all to go mad-- they then massacred each other.

Last week’s story, La Silampa:

The story is told in Spanish. You may follow along by clicking on this link: http://miedourbano.com/?page_id=35
The story essentially is about:
La Silampa: On winter (rainy for us) nights, the cold fog comes from the mountains is when the Silampa appears. It’s like a white sheet that flies over the field; it could be confused with fog. It catches any incautious who walks late in the night and wraps it up and sucks him/her and leave just the bones.

On this episode of Mixing It Up with Maggi, I sit at home with my mom to talk about Spanish language soaps and their evolutions in the last few years. The female protagonists and their overall stories have become more complex and dynamic. We start by mentioning some of my mother's favorites and transition into the ones I watched as a young child. We finish off with Netflix's additions of Spaniard series: El Tiempo Entre Costura and Las Chicas Del Cable. I teach my mom how to analyze media and look at the possible reasons for the change in these stories and its connect to our ever changing society.

On this episode get inspired to shake things up as we take a little road trip to get some mimosas!
A few weeks ago I headed down to Dallas, TX to meet with the one and only Destiny. She uprooted her life in New York for new adventures down south. We catch up with her a year after the big move and speak about this process and how she adjusted to her new life.
Here are some tips to keep in mind if you are thinking about moving:
Save, Save, Save and yes, Save (to life off of for 3-6 months)
Research and possibly visit the state/city where you would like to move
Apply to jobs before moving and be honest about your circumstances while writing your cover letter (give employers a move and start date)
Be willing to take a pay cut (you might need to take a part time while you start to settle down in your new place)
5.Get a license. Not all cities are as public-transportation driven like NYC. Learn the basics of driving and obtain your license. If possible, start looking at cars even before moving. This way, you will be able to start moving around and exploring your new city right away
Once you're there:
1.Explore your new place: Groupon activities, restaurants, and other locations to start building your hang out spots
2.Get active: Join a gym or class where you can meet new people and learn a new skill
3.Date/meet up: Change your Tinder location and don't be afraid to start meeting new people. You can research events (meetups, concerts or city events) where you can meet like-minded individuals. Be safe but have fun!

On this episode, I sit down with the artist: rapper/filmmaker Dre Manning. We work together as media educators and often find ourselves talking about everything from current events to more personal matters all while developing curriculums for young filmmakers in East Harlem.
Dre, a father of two, speaks on his experience as a young Black father: the stereotypes he is trying to counteract and the narrative he is imparting to his young sons. Listen to his story about what/whom shaped him as man and as a father.

On this episode, I connect with Destiny, my former "work-wife" and a good friend. Though she left New York City for Dallas, Texas she hasn't lost her city style and attitude. Destiny and I met two years ago while working in a public access television station. We worked in the education department serving youth interested in media, journalism, and production. During my time there, Destiny gave me the 411 in the world of community media, social organizing and activism. I'm so very thankful to her for sharing this other side of media making; media-making with a purpose. Destiny's guidance has shaped not only how I look at the media, but how I converse with others and how I write my stories. She's also my social media guru, always teaching new ways of interacting in this ever-changing world of social media. It's no wonder she was the perfect person to speak about social media activism.
We discuss what is social media activism, how impactful it is and what are some steps to take to become more socially conscious when interacting online.

On this episode of Mixing it up with Maggi, I spend some quality time with my high school bff. Chrystal is an artist and as a trained professional, she speaks about both her passion and frustration: her love-hate relationship with being an artist for hire.
Chrystal, turned her passion for drawing Disney characters into a career in Animation. With a degree from SCAD in animation, she works for a prestigious art company but she doesn't forget her humble beginnings, her passion for art and her love for animation. She talks about her struggles and how art, her passion, her bread & butter, has also become her therapy.
Listen to her story from her humble beginnings to her college years and now as a working professional.
