Virtue seem to thee an irksome thing, consider that vice is more irksome. And this very thing He was intimating, in that He said not first, “Take my yoke upon you,” but before that, “Come, ye that labor and are heavy laden;” implying that sin too hath labor, and a burden that is heavy and hard to bear.[1]

Living a truly Christian life is impossible without the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our helper, our comforter, and our guide. Without Him, we are left to our own fallen created energies. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to fulfill God's commandments and do the works that we are called to. He gives us the strength and wisdom we need to overcome the challenges we face and to live a life that is pleasing to God. Therefore, it is essential that we seek the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives and allow Him to lead us in all that we do.

Also, from among yourselves, men will rise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves." Christ is Born! Glorify Him!
We cannot fully understand the incarnation of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. What we do know is that God became Man and fully revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ.

We were blessed to have Archimandrite Sergius (Bowyer), the Abbot of St. Tikhon's Monastery and author of Acquiring the Mind of Christ: Embracing the Vision of the Orthodox Church, with us for our Nativity Retreat. Fr. Sergius brought the miracle-working icon of St. Anna with him to St. Innocent. Fr. Sergius gave this homily on blessing God in the midst of our trials, drama, and tribulations, like the Three Holy Youths in Danial 2.

If we love God we will pray.

One of the great paradoxes of our time is that while we generally live in prosperity we also struggle to have gratitude for the gifts God has given to us. Gratitude is something we need to actively cultivate in everyday spiritual lives.

The young child Mary was brought into the temple so that she could become the Temple where God would enthrone Himself. By the Holy Spirit, we Christians are temples of the living God. Let's take the time to make space in our hearts for the living God.

As the legal expert tries to justify himself, Jesus tells the famous story of the good Samaritan. Jesus is the ultimate good Samaritan and we are meant to imitate Him in our Christian walk.

Christians have always struggled with the tension between rigorously following the law or, on the other hand, completely disregarding the law. St. Paul lets us know there is nothing in the law that we can do that will justify us before God. At the same time, we are called to do works of mercy. Take time and read the first chapters of Revelation and see what our Lord praises and rebukes.

This lecture was presented on October 22, 2022, at Saint Innocent Orthodox Church in Macon, Georgia.
The Apostle Paul famously tells us that he would "boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." What would it look like for us to come to terms with our infirmities and put our trust in Christ?
Quotes by Saint Tikhon
"Devote all your energy to preaching the word of God and the truth of Christ, especially today, when unbelief and atheism are audaciously attacking the Church of Christ. May the God of peace and love be with all of you!"
"The spread of Christ's faith ought to be near and precious to the heart of every Orthodox Christian"
A quote from St. Innocent
“Knowing how pleasant it is for the true Christian to hear of the propagation of Christianity among nations previously unenlightened by the Holy Gospel, I have determined to set forth what I know concerning the propagation and establishment of Christian truth in one of the most remote parts of our country, where, by the will of God, I have been led to spend many years.”
John 3:16 is a familiar passage to most Christians in our society. What does it mean that God "so loved the world"?
Jesus has a unique challenge for each of us as we follow Him. Do you want to be perfect?
What are some of the things that get in the way of us following our Lord's command to forgive?
We often find ourselves lacking faith, yet faith is an essential component of our life in Christ. How do we grow in faith? Our faith will always be proportional to our pursuit of intimacy with God.
When Jesus called Peter out on the waters, Peter began to sink and called out to the Lord to save him. When we are sinking into the chaos of life, what do we call out for to save us?
Christianity is a faith built on the Apostle's encounters with Christ. We too are called to follow in their footsteps.
We are called to become as children who look to their Heavenly Father for all things. It is only in the Father that we will find rest.
The saints of North America heeded their general calling to follow Christ and used their God-given gifts to spread the Gospel in North America.
The saints were those who by their presence brought the Gospel of Christ in words, and deeds.
The Christian life is a patient life that waits on the Lord, just as the apostles waited for the descent of the Holy Spirit.
On the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman, we learn what it means to worship in Spirit and Truth. This passage is often interpreted to mean that our worship should be sincere or come from our individual feelings. More important than our individual emotions is that we live our lives in Christ daily and that we increase the grace of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Rather than being mere assembled individuals, the people of God are called to be united in mind and heart as they approach the throne of God as one.
Jesus went to the destitute paralytic and healed him. As the body of Christ, we too are called to seek out the destitute and be present with them.
As the Body of Christ, we are all called to support and nurture one another in the faith.
The Church always encourages us to humbly tell the truth about ourselves and ask for God's help. This is especially helpful during times of doubt. Suppression and/or denial are pathological.
Our culture tells us that doing what makes us happy is a good thing...but it is toxic for Christians to live this way. We are not called to pursue happiness, We are called to do what Glorifies God.
It is often thought that Christians are people who simply suppress themselves but self-denial is really about bringing our unhealthy passions to the Cross so that we can be transformed by God.
Fr. Stephen Freeman gave our annual Lenten Retreat this year.
Session 1: Saturday, March 19, 2022
The language of the services, as well as the traditional words in Orthodox prayerbooks, is often expressed in terms that can provoke a sense of shame - descriptions of our unworthiness, or of our fear before the presence of God. How do we read these words in a healthy manner and use them in the way they are intended? This can be an especially important topic for those who were raised in a tradition other than Orthodoxy.
Fr. Stephen Freeman preaches on the St. Gregory Palamas, his significant theological contributions, and what it means for each one of us.
We continue to live in the exile of Adam and Eve. The Church gives us the tools of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer to help us experience this exile so that we can long for our true homeland, the Heavenly Kingdom.
St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. Chrysostom. May God bless us to raise up such saints in our day and age.
Today we celebrate the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia who became witnesses to the true faith through their trials and tribulations.
If we want to grow closer with God, we will always have to face our impurities and repent.
"The goal of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit." 19th Century, St. Seraphim of Sarov
Like the Fathers and Old Testament Prophets, we live with faith in anticipation of Christ. For them it was the first coming, for us it is His glorious second coming.
We are invited to the banquet for our benefit, not because the Master needs us there. Don't become so preoccupied with worldly affairs that you miss your invitation to communion with the Living God.
Galatians 5:22-6:2
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
In order to be bearers of the grace of God, we have to empty ourselves so that we can be filled.
