This week, as we finish chapter four, we see Paul thanking and encouraging the Philippians again for their gift and sacrificial giving. But, he also gives some insight into learning the secret to contentment/peace. Do we really believe God is all powerful and His plan is the best plan? God’s providence means He doesn’t just know what’s coming—He goes before us and sovereignly works circumstances together to accomplish His purposes. God is never reacting, scrambling, or caught off guard. He is ruling and overruling in the details of life. Our life is not random. For the man who trusts in Jesus, it is a series of divine appointments directed by a sovereign God. Our resources are not dependent on us, but on the providence, power, and promises of God. That’s what sustained Paul through every trial and hardship — and they are enough for us too. People assume contentment is being able to be free from the brokenness of this world. True contentment is being at peace in the midst of any problem or difficult circumstance and that peace can only come in Jesus! Our culture is discontent with what we own, what we look like, who we are married to, our parents, our children, with life in general. How can we, like Paul, learn the secret to being content, regardless of circumstances?
This week, God instructs the Philippians (and us) to FOCUS on Christ-like virtues and allow that focus to become such a discipline in our lives, that it is a daily habit/mindset. We are a product of our thinking. God says in Proverbs 23:7 as a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.” The ESV says, he is like one who is inwardly calculating. What that means is that a person's true nature is defined by what they secretly think, which eventually shows in their actions. In fact, in our culture today, we don’t think, we focus more on feelings and pragmatism. Instead of asking the questions – “is it true or is it right?”, we lean towards “how does it make them feel…does it work…does it offend anybody?” What God is saying through Paul in this little section is focus your mind on Heavenly, eternal things, not the earthly, temporary ones.
This week, we press into chapter 4 and the path to the peace and contentment that comes from Jesus. Where do most people look for peace and contentment? Especially when my wife has a chronic or terminal illness, bills aren’t getting paid, friends betray me or let me down, children disown me, grandkids are struggling with life, but you aren’t allowed to speak to it. Our world is filled with anxiety, stress, and discontentment. Unfortunately, the church has failed to be light in THAT darkness and instead of Biblical Truth, we’ve allowed self-esteem therapy, psychological self-help therapy, and victim-creating therapy to have the loudest voices. We’ve steered people to the wrong answers which produces more controlling, more anxiety, and people who reject the TRUTH for secular wisdom. The world will search anywhere for peace, except for in Jesus and God’s Word. God reminds the Philippians and us through Paul that true peace and contentment is only in Jesus. In fact, in these 7 verses, 6 of them contain either a direct quote of “in the Lord” or allude to that truth. Where are we seeking our peace today? Do we believe like the world (and secular wisdom) that every person has a right to whatever they want to do that makes them feel good? Or, do we believe that true peace and contentment can only be found in Jesus and a right relationship with our Heavenly Father?
This week, Paul drives down deeper into what it means to pursue the one thing, encouraging the Philippians to do that, while revealing some pitfalls to watch out for. The key idea is that we continue to “PRESS ON” toward the goal of being like Christ until we reach full maturity, which doesn’t happen until we are with Him in glory! He also warns us that not everyone who says they are pursuing the same thing will continue along that path. If Jesus IS our “One Thing,” then we have to, like Paul, weigh out what’s really important and live it out daily and say no to lesser things/lusts of the flesh.
This week, Paul gives us insight to a Christian’s Secret to Life, the ONE THING! Many people try to figure out what the one thing is and live out this philosophy. They make their spouse, their kids, or their family their “one thing.” They spend most of their time, energy, and resources focusing on providing, supporting, encouraging those people. Other make their one thing their job, their company, their corporate dream. Others, make it some materialistic dream or idealistic lifestyle, their own created utopia. The problem is we really don’t have the power to make life what we want it to be. We are not the source of our lives, the ruler of our lives, and we don’t ultimately determine the goal of our lives. Yahweh is the creator of all things and the source of our life. Before his encounter with Jesus, Paul found his identity in the law and his religious ambition. He was a Jewish Pharisee who thought the one thing was carrying out the law and persecuting anyone who disagreed about that being the one thing. But, after Jesus intervened, Paul came to know that the one thing in life is Jesus.
This week, Paul gives us two great models of what we’ve been studying over the past few weeks - Timothy and Epaphroditus. They lived lives worthy of the Gospel of Christ (Phil 1:27); they lived in unity with Paul and the church (Phil 2:1-2); they humbly considered others more highly than themselves (Phil. 2:3-4); they had the mindset of Christ, being willing to suffer in order to bring life to others (Phil 2:5-11); and they did all of this without grumbling or complaining (Phil 2:14-15). When we look at the example of Jesus or even Paul (His supernaturally gifted Apostle), we can feel intimidated or skeptical about living out that kind of life. So, Paul gives us two examples of people just like us who are living proof that it can be done by ordinary people. Timothy and Epaphroditus show us that we can not only live out that kind of life but have tremendous impact for the Kingdom. They both grew up in cultures engrossed in idol worship and false religion, yet they surrendered their lives to serve the one true God and His Gospel. Just like them, we too can live counter culturally in a world full of instant gratification, self-centeredness, and other idols when we live a life that is unselfish, humble, “counting others more significant,” and for the sake of the Gospel.
This week, we dive into chapter 2, verses 12-18 and learn what it means to reflect Christ light in a dark world. After reminding the Philippians of Jesus example, Paul instructs them that they are not just to try and imitate Jesus, but incarnate Jesus into their world. He reminds them that grumbling and fighting hinders their witness and they need to “hold fast” to the Gospel to be the lights they were intended to be and have the joy they were intended to experience. Our world is very dark and our country is not in a good place spiritually. What we’ve seen happening over the past 50-60 years is God’s judgment. 1)Sexual revolution-60,70’s, 2)Homosexual revolution-80s,90s, 3)Transgender insanity - we now have laws that protect all kinds of unrighteousness. We call right wrong and wrong right. When you have leaders who have promoted godless and unbiblical values in state leadership, congressional leadership, even our highest level, the presidency, it is a sign of God’s judgment right out of Romans 1:18-32. It started when we began to turn away from His Truth as a nation and we received the wrath of Divine abandonment. But take heart, Jesus’ rule is not determined or diminished by any earthly authority or source. His Kingdom cannot be hindered by any leader, court, or tyrant. For now, His Kingdom is visible in the church. However, God says, there will be some (His Kingdom Citizens) who are different who will distinguish themselves from the darkness around them. Our world is dark, but we are called to be LIGHT! We are the people of Mal 3 and we live in a Rom 1 world! So, how do we …live out a “life worthy of the Gospel?” Reflect His light in the darkness? Follow HIS model of Gospel obedience? Join us to find out!
This week, in verses 5-11, Paul reminds the Philippians of the ultimate and only perfect example of humility, loving others, and someone who counts others “more significant” by pointing them to JESUS! If Jesus, the King of the universe, can willingly lay aside his rights, privileges, and freedom for us, who are we to make selfish demands on others! Remember, Biblical unity is not externally driven, but internally fueled by the holy Spirit and is supernatural. We are not naturally humble or unselfish. Unity is a result of humility and love!
This week, we continue looking at this section that really runs from Ch. 1:27- Ch. 2:11 and deals with unity, harmony, and living out a life that reflects Christ’s values. Specifically, we see the “why” of living out a life worthy of our calling and “marks” of a life worthy of our calling. Paul is really driving down deep with the Philippians into the idea of unity within the church. There have always been unity issues in the church. In fact, in Romans, Ephesians, Colossian, and 2 Corinthians, Paul stressed pursuing unity and unity is not externally driven, but internally fueled by the holy Spirit. When we focus on Christ, he pulls us together. Division in the church is rampant today for many reasons, but God wants us to be unified in our hearts and mindset for the Gospel! Verses 1-4 is actually one long sentence that reminds the Philippians of their blessings and calls them to unity from love and humility as they serve our great King!
In 2002, Pat Tillman, safety for the Arizona Cardinals, left the NFL in 2002 (and almost 4 million dollars) to enlist in the army after 9/11 and ultimately gave his life for freedom. Many people followed Tillman’s example and signed up to be military warriors, law enforcement, firefighters, and other dangerous career fields because their life was not as important as their cause. The cause was great than their safety or their lives. This week, we go into Ch. 2 vs. 19-26 and read that Paul’s commitment to the Gospel was greater that his desire to live. His safety or his life wasn’t as important as the Gospel. What about you and me? Is Jesus and the Gospel important to us? How important? Joy in our lives flows out of Gospel purpose! Living for Christ’s Kingdom! As we look at today’s text, we’ll see that God calls us to serve Him… 1)With a Savior Exalting Purpose – everything for His glory (vs. 19-21) and 2) As a Selfless, Encouraging Partner –serving and strengthening others (vs.22-26) .
This week, we move into a new section and will be looking at part 1 of Serving with Joy. Our Spiritual maturity can often be measured in how easily we lose our joy in Christ. The joy that is produced by the Holy Spirit. I’m not sure another human has suffered for the cause of Christ like Paul, except Jesus and the whole purpose of this letter is to remind the Philippians to not let Satan steal their joy. The joy comes not from our circumstances, but in being included in the Kingdom of God, serving our King, and His great cause – the Gospel.
Last episode, we looked at verse 1 and 2 and the theme of unity and God calling us to unity in our view of ourselves, our view of the church and our view of God and Jesus. The foundation for all of these is humility. Paul records Jesus’ model of humility in chapter 2 for us to take note of.In this episode, we see Paul affirm the Philippians for their partnership with Him in spreading the Gospel. He mentions this idea several times in today’s text, as well as, his love for them and his call for them to love each other. We see in the text that our partnership in the Gospel is based on a God's mission - the Gospel, Fueled by His Love, and Fortified by His Word.
Philippians is a letter written to thank the church at Philippi for sending financial aid to help Paul during his 1st imprisonment in Rome. It’s theme is often referred to as Joy, but it is a specific joy related to Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus is mentioned over 50 times in this “joy” letter and joy is mention 16 times in this 4 chapter book. Paul also addressed the sufficiency of Jesus because Gnosticism was starting to spread. Gnosticism – the belief that the material world is evil and Jesus was only a messenger/angel that brought “secret” knowledge to help us escape our body, which has trapped our souls. They believed that Jesus wasn’t human, He just appeared human. Paul wrote Ephesians, Colossians, and Philippians to address Jesus as truly God and truly man and His sufficiency to save us. In this letter, Paul emphasizes the sufficiency of Christ and the joy that produces in us. In addition to dealing with the Gnostics, and the Philippian’s concern about Paul’s welfare, he also deals with a problem they have that plagues lots of churches today – disunity. Paul deals with this in every chapter. So, as we look at our small portion of text today, it really is straightforward, but there is a lot of meaning in it, especially as it relates to unity and harmony.
This week, we see the burial of the Son of God and two unlikely disciples, boldly step out to be part of Jesus’ burial. Why do all four Gospel writers write about His burial They all write about it because His burial, according to Paul in 1 Cor. is of 1st importance. God ordained and orchestrated every detail. God orchestrates events in our life either supernaturally or providentially. The supernatural intervention is referred to as a miracle and usually interrupts natural law and processes. Thru Divine providence, God insured thru His burial that He was dead. He insured where He was buried and how He was buried fulfilled Holy Scripture. Finally, He providentially gave two secret disciples a chance to be BOLD in their faith. Previously, they were hesitant to publicly give testimony about their loyalty to Him, but they went above and beyond by taking down His body from the cross and honored Him with a proper burial.
This week, we see the crucifixion and death of Jesus at Golgotha, the “Place of the Skull.” Mark doesn’t focus on the physical pain or even the physicality of the crucifixion. Instead, he gives more detail about the mockery, scorn, and rejection by the religious leaders. After being mocked and offered a sedative to keep him calm, Jesus was nailed to the cross between two criminals under the charge “The King of the Jews.” As onlookers, the religious leaders, and even the criminals ridiculed Him to come down and prove His divinity, darkness covered the land for three hours. In that moment of divine agony, Jesus cried out to His Father, expressing the weight of separation as He bore humanity’s sin. With a loud cry, He gave up His spirit, and the temple curtain was torn from top to bottom—signifying direct access to God through His sacrifice. The very messengers of God’s hope completely rejected the HOPE sent to bring redemption and forgiveness. However, a Roman centurion, witnessing how He died, declared, “Truly this man was the Son of God,” while some devoted women who had followed Him for a while looked on from a distance, remaining faithful even in His death.
This week, we see the Gentile (Roman) trial which also has three phases. Jesus will go before Pilate, Herod, and then Pilate again. Pilate over and over again says that Jesus is an innocent man, a man not guilty of anything deserving death. Herod even proclaims Jesus’ innocence. In spite of their witness that Jesus is innocent, Pilate chooses to please the crowd and religious leaders over ruling on the TRUTH of the matter. Why, because in God’s unfolding plan, Jesus had to go to the CROSS! If not, we would have all been doomed to eternal punishment!! God is the ultimate influence of the death of Jesus…not Judas…not Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate, Herod…Yahweh!
This week, we see darkness at every turn. We see the betrayal by Judas. Jesus is then arrested and tried by the people responsible for instructing and leading God’s people. We see the “Shepherds of Israel,” the Sanhedrin and High Priest hold an illegal trial and commit many illegal acts as they carry out their plan to have Jesus killed. They hated His message of grace and they were extremely jealous of His popularity. Finally, we see one of His closest disciples deny Him three times, just as Jesus prophesied.
This week, we see a final attempt by Satan to try and keep Jesus from going to the cross by tempting Him to not take up the cup of God’s wrath. We see the weight of the world’s sin and the wrath of God start to weigh heavy on Jesus. How does He respond? He goes to His Father for comfort and strength. When we are hurting because God has called us to a path that is painful and costly, how do we respond? We can learn a lot from Jesus as He models trusting in the Father, even when we don’t like what He’s called us to do.
Last session, we saw a contrast in a devoted follower who was a true worshipper of Jesus and a “wolf” in sheep’s clothing. We saw the passion of Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, for Jesus demonstrated in her actions and also saw the selfish and idolatrous deception of Judas, who followed Jesus geographically, but not spiritually. He saw all of Jesus’ miracles, heard all His teachings, and even taught and healed people, but was ultimately a fraud. Our actions ultimately reveal our hearts and our true loyalties. This week, we continue looking at Jesus and His disciples celebrating the Passover. This is the last Passover, not just for Jesus, but for all true followers of God. Jesus institutes His “Passover” to be remember by our celebrating and remembering his suffering and death on our behalf. We also see Him remind us that pride and self-sufficiency is a universal problem without a cure, apart from Jesus.
This week, we see a contrast in a follower who is a true worshipper of Jesus and a “wolf” in sheep’s clothing. We see the passion of this follower for Jesus demonstrated in her actions and also see the traitorous deception of a fraudulent follower of Jesus in his actions. Our actions ultimately reveal our hearts and our true loyalties. In less than 24 hours, Jesus will be beaten and crucified, but before that happens, he has some important instructions about his departure. This is the beginning of the end of His time on earth.
Last session, we looked at chapter 13:1-27 and the beginning of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus’ final prophecy before the cross. It was late on Wednesday of Passion Week and Jesus left the Temple for the last time. When the disciples marveled at how awesome the temple was, Jesus stunned them: “Not one stone here will be left on another” (Mark 13:2). This prophecy came true in A.D. 70 when the Romans destroyed the Temple. Later, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, “When will these things happen, and what will be the sign?” Jesus’ answered them by teaching them about the fall of Jerusalem and His ultimate return. He shared that between His 1st and 2nd coming, time on earth will be filled with wars, death, and danger. He prepares them by telling them what is going to happen in the immediate future and right before His 2nd coming…proving His Divine nature by predicting the future events. The purpose of this discourse is not date-setting but Kingdom discipleship: a call for believers to remain watchful, discerning, and faithful until Christ comes again. This session, we look at Jesus sharing some instructions, an important warning, and a couple of illustrations to help the disciples understand and apply what He has been teaching them about His return and their mindset about the future. “Prophecy is in every book in the Bible.” Dwight Pentecost It’s in there to change our mindset and our life!
Today, we dive into chapter 13 and the Olivet Discourse, Jesus’ final prophecy before the cross. It is one of the most difficult passages in the New Testament, filled with Old Testament allusions, imagery, and layers of fulfillment pointing to the end of the age. After entering Jerusalem, cleansing the Temple, and confronting the religious leaders, Jesus left the Temple for the last time. When the disciples marveled at how awesome the temple was, Jesus stunned them: “Not one stone here will be left on another” (Mark 13:2). This prophecy came true in A.D. 70 when the Romans destroyed the Temple. Later, on the Mount of Olives—where God’s glory once departed (Ezek. 11) and where the Messiah will return (Zech. 14)—Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, “When will these things happen, and what will be the sign?” Jesus’ answered them by teaching them about the fall of Jerusalem and His ultimate return. The disciples are not ready for what he is about to share. They think he is about to establish His rule and reign on earth. He does reign, but the timing of His earthly Kingdom reign isn’t now. Between the 1st coming and 2nd coming, time on earth will be filled with wars, death, and danger. He prepares them by telling them what is going to happen in the future…proving His Divine nature. The purpose of this discourse is not date-setting but Kingdom discipleship: a call for believers to remain watchful, discerning, and faithful until Christ comes again.
This week, we continue to look at Jesus’ warning to the crowd and His disciples about the religious “Posers.” Jesus warns us against them, their pride, their pretense, and their perversion of the faith. He points out a lonely widow who had been abused by the system as an example of how bad things had become. She gave her last little bit of money to secure her blessings and salvation from God. Sounds a lot like the religious hucksters of today!
This week, Jesus gave the crowd and His disciples a final warning about the religious “Posers.” He has already exposed their character and faulty theology. Now, he condemns them and their hypocrisy and states that their judgment is coming. These posers pretended to represent Yahweh, but actually represent Satan. Satan is a liar, father of lies, and can appear as an angel of light. The Jewish people saw the Sanhedrin, the Sadducees, the Pharisees, the Levites, and the scribes as God’s representatives, when in reality, they represented the evil one. You can’t represent Yahweh and teach lies, take advantage of widows, and disregard Yahweh’s commands, and His Messiah. They presented themselves as “holy men” who served as Yahweh’s shepherds, but in reality, they served themselves for the sake of power, money, and their own glory. They were supposed to feed and care for Yahweh’s sheep. They were supposed to be gatekeepers of the Scriptures and guard Yahweh’s people. Instead, they led them to murder Yahweh’s Messiah…Yahweh’s Son. Religious Posers and false teachers are not benign. They cover up what they really are by pretending to be something that aren’t. Left unchallenged, they can do great damage to the body. Jude 1:3-5 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Posers are enemies of Yahweh. They distort His Word, Hate the Euangellion of Jesus, and ultimately hate the sheep.
This week, it was Jesus’ turn to ask the questions, and he poses a question to the religious leaders (with the crowd listening) and then exposits an Old Testament passage that Jewish teaching had always affirmed was about the Messiah. Every Jew knew that Messiah was David’s son, but they did not see or comprehend that He was David’s God!! They believed that Messiah would be a human ruler with great power from Yahweh. He would have a great impact on the world by leading Israel to conquer all their enemies and fulfill Yahweh’s promises to Abraham and David. They saw Messiah as a savior of Israel as a nation, not for individuals.
This week, we come to a text that is simple and straightforward. There is not a lot of interpretation with this passage, but a lot of application and accountability with it. This will probably cause many of us to be uncomfortable or uneasy and what we should do is reflect on the heart of God and how we all miss the mark and really need Jesus! The Sanhedrin debriefed (see Acts 4:23, Psalm 2:2 – fulfilled prophecy) after the first two attempts and come up with a question that they all agree on and hopefully will move this rogue Rabbi (Jesus) to respond with a statement that puts himself above Moses and The Law. They wanted to turn the people against Him before they arrested Him. There were 613 laws (613 letters in the Ten Commandments) in the Torah and they wanted Him to answer which one is the most important in hopes he would slip up.
This week, we see the wave of attacks continue. All these groups, Chief Priests, Pharisees, Herodians, Scribes try to trap Jesus with questions that reveal how they have departed from God’s Word in some way. The Sadducees, a group in charge of the Temple and supposedly the spiritual leaders of Israel now try to trap Jesus with the second question. They try to discredit Him with a question about the resurrection. His response gives us some insights into the Sadducees’ faulty view of Heaven, Scripture, and even Yahweh and His power. Also, His answers give us insight on applying God’s Word to our lives and the way we live as His Kingdom priests.
This week, the religious leaders desperately want to get rid of Jesus. So, they come up with a plan that has a series of traps with questions about 1) how much do they defer to Roman authorities, 2)the resurrection, and 3)which commandment is the greatest? They hated and feared Jesus and after the last two interactions, they wanted Him off the scene. They were looking for a way to turn the people against Him or have Rome arrest Him and kill Him. Remember, it was Passover week, and this was the time for messiahs to rise up. The questions were meant to trap Jesus, but He gives us insight into how we are to live out what we believe practically relating to the government, our view of Heaven, and living out the greatest commandment. In Israel, the priests (Levi) represented God’s rule/law and the Kings (Judah) represented government rule/law. King Uzziah tried to cross the line and was struck with leprosy. There is only one priest/king – Jesus! Politicians/gov’ts don’t define or dictate God’s law.God’s Law reigns supreme over every other authority.
This week, Jesus goes further into exposing the unbelief of the religious posers and their coming judgment with a parable about a landowner who leases out a vineyard to tenants who were greedy and violent. It is another revelation from Jesus about the coming judgment on Israel’s religious leaders, religious system, their temple, and their nation. You can harden your heart for so long that you go past the point of God’s patience and mercy…it’s TOO LATE! When Jesus came on the scene, He came to a spiritually dead nation. God’s Spirit had left the temple and their temple was dead…their leaders were dead…their nation was dead. So much so, that when Jesus appeared, they questioned His authority. Don't wait to trust Him. Trust Him NOW!
This week, the religious leaders question Jesus as to whose authority He was operating under as He cleared out the temple and taught the things that He taught. Jesus responded to their questions with a question of His own and His question to them exposed their lack of faith in Him as Messiah, and their lack of belief in the One True Living God, Yahweh. They were paralyzed by his questions because it forced them to reveal their true unbelief in God’s Word.
This week, Jesus uses a Fig tree to symbolize the departure of Israel from True Faith in God. He cursed the Fig tree and within 24 hours it was dead. He also took the disciples into the temple, where He overturned tables and chairs, shut down the marketplace of Annas, and took the leaders back to a couple of Old Testament passages that had an ominous warning about what was about to happen to them and their religious system. He also instructed the disciples about their source of power going forward and the secret to effective prayer.
This week, Jesus fulfills Scripture prophecy by riding a donkey down from the Mount of Olives to the Temple. He is heading into passion week and the last week of His life. The reaction of the crowd was celebratory and exalting, but not for the right reasons. Instead of recognizing Jesus as God’s Messiah and sacrificial lamb, they were trying to claim Him as their National Messiah and deliverer from Rome. Matthew and Mark dedicate 40 percent of their Gospel to the passion week. Luke devotes 25 percent and John over 50 percent to the week where Jesus is rejected, betrayed, scourged, crucified, buried, and resurrected. This is the main point of Jesus’ ministry. It is the week of Passover- the celebration of Israel being delivered from Egyptian bondage. It is during this week, that would-be messiahs would often appear in Jerusalem sparking riots and unrest. Rome would often beef up security. The Old Testament sacrificial system was a foreshadowing of Jesus coming to this moment. Jesus dies at Passover.
This week, Jesus continues his instruction by leading them into a situation that illustrates exactly what He was trying to teach them. They came to serve, not to be served. As they are traveling, they encounter a couple of blind beggars, providentially sitting by the exact road where they were walking. Jesus not only heals their blindness, He heals their hearts and they follow Him and the disciples on “the way.”
This week, Jesus instructs His disciples for the third time about his suffering and crucifixion…and, for the third time, they don’t understand or they simply don’t want to believe what He is telling them. Luke says, they “didn’t understand or grasp what He was saying.” Why? Their minds were not on the CROSS, but on a CROWN!! Matthew and Mark records that their response revealed some deep-seated pride issues that still needed to be rooted out.
This week, we are looking at a passage that deals with two types of people that approach Jesus- young children (people with no visible value) and a wealthy, influential, up and coming ruler. In all 3 Gospels, the story of the rich young ruler is preceded by Mothers bringing their children to be blessed by Jesus. What a contrast…young children (infants) who are totally dependent and have nothing to offer God versus a wealthy, influential, and religious man who thinks he can DO something to earn God’s blessing. Jesus uses these interactions as a teaching time for his disciples on the heart condition required to receive the Kingdom of God!
This week, we are looking at a passage that deals with a painful and unpleasant subject-DIVORCE. Most of us grew up during a time when people aspired to be married, be a good husband or a good wife, raise good children of faith and continue to obey God’s command to be fruitful and multiply. Now, God’s standard is ridiculed and hardly anybody expects to be married forever. Now, even children are divorcing parents! God intended for marriage to be a lifelong monogamous relationship, but many today (even in the church) feel that is unrealistic! If we get a divorce unbiblically, there’ll be no significant consequences, we’ll just remarry and do it all again!“I have to do what’s best for me”…God doesn’t want me to be unhappy the rest of my life”…We create our own reality and version of His truth…We try to be God! What does God think about divorce? He hates it! Malachi 2:16. God intended marriage for one man and one woman for life. Satan always goes for family and attacks the family by destroying marriages. But the homes were deteriorating 400 years before Jesus. Mal 2:14 “Yahweh is a witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless…your wife by covenant.” 2 schools of thought – Rabbi Hillel (liberal-broad) – divorce your wife for anything, citing Deut 24, “indecency.” Rabbi Shammai (conservative-narrow)- only adultery. Do we want to follow God’s way to do marriage or man’s way.
This week, Jesus again instructs the disciples on His death and resurrection, but again, they just don’t get it…they don’t understand. He is has to deal with their worldly ambition, self-exalting exclusivity, and some worldly influences that threaten to destroy His new leadership. He reminds them with a strong graphic message that they are to be humble servants, a “salting” influence for good in the world, and even when they stumble, God will use suffering and discipline to purify them. Is there really a difference between them and the disciples of the Pharisees? Is there a difference between us and the world around us? God’s people are to be known as humble servants of the Most High! John 13:12-17 The night before he was crucified, the one picture He wanted to leave with His disciples is one of service and humility. If we really want to be His Kingdom disciples, we WILL serve others with a humble heart.
This week, Jesus, Peter, James, and John come down off the mountain into chaos. The scribes are mocking the disciples who stayed behind because they could not cast out a demon in a demon possessed young man. The young man’s father brought his son to Jesus to be healed and the disciples could not cast out the demon. You can imagine the frustration, fear, and confusion taking places….especially with the scribes looking for a reason to discredit Jesus and His disciples. However, God was not surprised by any of it! His plan was unfolding and Jesus was about to educate the disciples that 1) you cannot live on your past accomplishments and 2) you must ALWAYS depend on Yahweh to fight your battles!!!
This week, Jesus fulfilled that Word and was transfigured before the three leaders, Peter, James, and John. He gave them a preview of His Glory that they would never forget! It was a gift to them to bolster them and anchor them through the storms they would encounter as the leaders Jesus that Jesus would entrust with His Euangellion!! He allowed them to see Him, Moses, and Elijah in their glorified state to get them through what was about to come. Every time God appears, it is to strengthen the faith of His servants.

This week, we see Jesus take His disciples to Caeserea Philippi where Peter makes his declaration that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah)! This is the first time in our journey through Mark, that his disciples referred to Him as the Messiah and from this point on, Jesus instructs them on his suffering, death, and resurrection. This passage really deals with the most important question any of us can answer, Who do we say Jesus is? Also, this is the first time we see the word church (ekklesia). The door is shut on Israel as the messengers of the Euangellion. This is a pivotal point in Jesus ministry.
This week, we see Jesus return with the Disciples back to the area near Capernaum and encounter the Religious leaders again. They are still upset over their last interaction and demand a “sign from Heaven” from Him. It is a great teaching opportunity for Jesus with the Disciples to help them understand the difference between being “Blind”-permanent and being “Blinded”-temporary. Also, to help them understand that spiritual growth takes time!
This week, we see Jesus finish His training trip into the Gentile world with the last recorded miracle of this particular journey. Remember, the theme of this training trip that began in Tyre- the grace and mercy of God’s Euangellion is for all the nations of the world. It’s not just for the Jews, but for the Gentiles also. This theme would have been very difficult for the disciples to swallow because they were raised to detest the idol worshipping Gentiles!! But, Jesus is showing them that He is the King/Savior/Messiah for all the nations of the world!

We saw God use Paul, as a prisoner, to lead over 276 people to have hope, in a hopeless situation. Over a 2 and ½ month period, God changed the minds of the people on the ship from disregarding Paul to respecting and honoring him. They all escaped safely despite an awful situation- 276 people jumped into the water, in a hurricane, from a shipwreck, and ALL made it safely to shore. God’s Word was fulfilled. God used and uses predictive prophecy to establish Divine Authority. God says it’ll happen, then it happens, and proves that God is who He claims to be and His Word can be trusted!!
In this week's study, we will look at Ch. 26 vs 19-32 and will see how God refocuses Paul’s passion from personal ambition to Kingdom service. He illustrates in Paul that an authentic response to the Gospel produces a changed life and a life that doesn’t make sense to those outside of the Kingdom. After Paul is brought before the Sanhedrin and taken back to the barracks, again protected by the Romans, Jesus appears to Paul and tells him to not worry, be strong, he will testify about Him in Rome. The next day, A plot to kill Paul is exposed and the Romans escort Paul under heavy guard to Caeserea to stand trial before Felix, the Governor. Again, we also see a God who cares by orchestrating all the details to protect His servant and continue to fulfill HIs plan to use Paul for His glory!!

After a Christmas break, we jump back into Acts and see Paul's ministry in Ephesus starting to wind down. He says his goodbyes, grabs some young disciples, and heads to Troas to meet with believers there and also perform his last miracle.
