We all want to feel fulfilled, avoid mediocrity and make a difference. Unfortunately, the sound track in our head sounds more like: I can’t seem to do anything right, my boss won’t promote me and my wife doesn’t respect me. Or maybe, I want to stop, I know I should, but I can’t. I am so frustrated with myself. I guess I will always be this way.

You can have an ordinary life and live extraordinarily well. It starts with the little things. The thoughts in your head, the words you speak and the habits shaping your daily life can take ordinary to extraordinary. You should live extraordinarily well it starts with the small things.

It’s Christmas time again! Does that excite you or is it more of a low-key at least I get time off work feeling? We will revive the traditions, eat the food, and watch the movies. It can be enjoyable, but it isn’t always meaningful. You have experienced some great Christmas’ where all seemed right with the world but also some not-so-great moments. Still the calendar is moving and Christmas is coming. Maybe this is the year for Celebrating an old holiday in a new way.

At Christmas you hear the expression “good news of great joy for all people.” We could use that now. So much of what we are experiencing in life doesn’t feel joyful and good news usually comes with a catch. Singing songs and getting together hasn’t been enough to create lasting joy. Christmas past has been fine but how does this Christmas, Christmas Present change things?

Blind spots are never good. The inability to see what is behind you is why you backed your car into the pole. The fact your boss doesn’t see how his arrogance creates distance keeps him blind to the fact people don’t want to work with him. Not knowing their strengths and weaknesses is how people end up in the wrong role. But there is a more fatal blind spot…your own.

You live in a world of expectations. Parents have expectations for their kids, bosses have expectations for their team, and you, you have expectations for yourself. It creates a tension you can manage but never solve. There is who you are, who you want to be, and who other people expect you to be. How do you choose which expectations to strive for? What do you do when they feel overwhelmingly heavy.

Sadly, not every expectation is a healthy one. The expectation to live life at a faster and faster pace isn’t good for anyone but seems to be expected by everyone. Another powerful expectation is to quit engaging with people who have opinions differing from yours. Of course, the one expectation everyone assumes is true is to take care of yourself…you must look out for you because no one else will. What if these expectations are wrong? How much better could life be if you were rejecting expectations that are wrong for you?

Have you heard the expression, “life comes at you fast”? For some life is slow and predictable for most things are in constant motion. There are some wonderful surprises and tough experiences, but we don’t usually know when they are coming. You know when taxes are due, when your child graduates and your birthday…it’s the other stuff that sneaks up on you.

No matter the pace of your life, there is something going on in the background. Some are highly in tune with this quiet consistent movement, others have no clue. Your life is being positioned, moved, and pointed a certain direction. Going against it is frustrating, filled with unfortunate surprises, and depressing. Moving with it is fulfilling, filled with unexpected joys, and energizing. God is On The Move, orient your life to move with Him.

Prayer is basic and yet confusing. On one hand it is talking to God, simple. On the other hand, it is not unusual to feel intimidated, uncertain, or even wonder why pray in the first place. We are all at different places when it comes to talking to God. Some have only a few quick conversations in their entire history…some seem to have a conversation going on all day all the time.

You know who prays? Everyone. Sooner or later, one way or another we all pray. It could be in a moment of intense desperation and loneliness. It could be an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and joy snapping you into a prayer. Prayer is not reserved for only religious people or super saints. Everyone does it, why not learn how to do it in a way that makes your life richer and more meaningful.

Life is full of ups and downs. Just when you think life’s roller coaster is leveling off, you hear the rhythmic clank of the chain slowly jerking you upward. After the moment of exhilaration at the top comes the white-knuckle plummet to the bottom.

Life is a journey and together we will discover that Joseph went from the pit of slavery to the pinnacle of power. Much like Joseph, we are faced with the allure of temptation, how to trust God during dark days, to forgive others when they hurt us, and how to leave a legacy. You’ll come to see that in spite of life’s ups and downs, God uses all things to guide you and shape you into His perfect will.

Today anxiety, division, navigating difficult family situations, daily struggles, and heartbreak seem to be the norm. Add to these an unprecedented level of outrage and the result is a culture biting and devouring itself. It is sad and discouraging until it gets personal, then it becomes bitter and tragic.

Your problems are different than mine. It is why we stumble and struggle to understand each other. There is one who understands your problems and the problems of the people close to you. He identifies because your problems and their problems are the same problems He faced. Jesus isn’t far off, uninvolved, and disinterested. He is ready to help with real solutions. He sees us. He gets us.

He sees us. He gets us.

Have you ever said something like, “If only I knew then what I know now?” Most of us have. There is usually some regret packed in. It is a confession. We would have made different decisions or taken different actions if we had a chance to do it again. We learn from experience. Experience is a good teacher, but it isn’t the only teacher.

What if you didn’t have to say that again? What if you could look back on today, a month, a year, or a decade in the future and say I am glad I knew then. You can Future Proof the parts of your life that matter most. Future-proofing is anticipating the future and making decisions now to live the life God created you to live.

Christmas sounds like hope. It sounds like peace, love, and joy. What do hope, peace, love, and joy sound like…well it’s hard to explain, but you know it when you hear it. Just like you know what depression, division, hate, and misery sound like.

It is the sound of our problems being turned upside down by a solution we never saw coming. It is the familiar tones of confidence and well-being, the sound of a soul quiet and at rest. You need to hear the Sounds of Christmas.

We start putting our focus on Christmas this Sunday. Start living the life you have always wanted. We gather in person or online at 9:15 or 10:45.

God wants you to live a connected life. A life connected to Him, connected to others, and connected to your own soul. To make this happen, He sent you an advocate, a counselor, a friend. The Holy Spirit.

This week in the series, we're honing in on patience, kindness, and goodness. Considering these fruits of the Spirit, it's easy to see how they can impact the world around us.

Did you know someone is fighting for you to stay connected? The Holy Spirit, or back in the pre-cell phone days, the Holy Ghost fights for you. He works tirelessly to connect you to God, to connect you to others, and to connect you to your own soul. The Holy Spirit is FOR you.

God does not want you to live disconnected. Jesus died so you can be connected, and the Holy Spirit has come to connect you. When your life seems to have no energy, when you are feeling cut off from what you need and everything is just awkward, the Holy Spirit is your advocate. I want you to consider an important question today. Why live disconnected when you can be connected and accepted?

As we start a new series today called Ghost Stories, we are talking about learning to trust the one who fights for you. You have a life fiduciary. Prior generations called him the Holy Ghost, today the Holy Spirit or Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is not some mystical force. He is a person to know, He is God the Spirit. He has emotions, He has power, He has love and He is an advocate for You.
