Several members of the Frolic Podcast Network have gathered for group mayhem and silliness for your collective amusement! I had the idea to do a group gathering of mayhem and merriment, so in this episode, we have me, Sarah Wendell from Smart Bitches Trashy Books, Kelly from Boobies & Noobies, and Kelsey and Zoë from Tea & Strumpets.

We get very silly and invite you to join us. We forget to introduce ourselves. We tell jokes. We debate which Music Man version is superior. I teach people about ranch dressing on pizza. It’s a thing! We talk about what we’re doing to keep our happiness levels up, too – books, dancing, and studying botany. As you do.

Illness has always been a part of human history, and mermaid legends have long played a part in offering protection from disease or foretold plagues and catastrophes. Professor Sarah Peverley returns to share stories of how mermaid cures have helped people through past epidemics. In the 19th century, people drew the Japanese Amabie mermaids as protection against disease, and that practice has been resurrected on social media during #coronavirus. From legends about the healing properties of mermaid bones to mermaids who prescribe mugwort for tuberculosis, mermaids continue to offer hope in uncertain times.

It’s the 30th anniversary of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. With several adaptations in the works, it’s a great time to talk about the history of The Little Mermaid. Sacha Coward is mermaid folklorist and freelance museum professional who has worked at local, national, and international museums and galleries..and also designs escape rooms! Host Laura von Holt asked Sacha to tell her everything he knows about The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen, queer history, mermaids around the world and what mermaids mean today. They also managed to touch on RuPaul’s Drag Race and the Twilight movies. Warning: There’s a teensy bit of strong language.

There’s a new Aquaman movie in theaters, starring Jason Momoa! While other people might call it a superhero film, we think it has “mermaid relevance” written all over it! But who is Aquaman, and what’s his deal? Laura von Holt asked Aquaman expert Rob Kelly of the Fire and Water Podcast Network to explain Aquaman in mermaid terms, and wow did he deliver! Rob Kelly explained the history of Aquaman, the aquatic mythology of Aquaman and Atlantis, Aquaman’s history in comics and film, and what we might see in the Warner Bros film. After listening to this deep dive into the lore of Aquaman, you will never think of him as just “the guy who talks to fish.”

We’re back with more mermaid authors and mermaid history! Laura von Holt interviewed the lovely and talented Imogen Hermes Gowar, the author of a new book titled The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock is a gorgeous historical novel, set in 1780s London, about a merchant named Jonah Hancock who finds that, while on a trading voyage to the Far East, the captain of his ship has sold his vessel, and instead of bringing back cargo, he has brought him a mermaid artifact. To make back his fortune, Jonah must display this brown, wizened mermaid for all of London, which leads him into the circle of one of London’s most celebrated courtesans, Angelica Neal. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but there are plenty of mermaids, both dead and living in this book, and it’s wonderful. This story is inspired by a mermaid specimen at the British Museum, where Imogen Hermes Gowar used to work, and if you listened to our interview with mermaid historian Sarah Peverley (Season 2, Episode 2), you will remember our conversation about these types of popular mermaid artifacts that were collected and displayed in Britain.

The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock is shortlisted for the Women’s Prize in Fiction. If you like Harlots on Hulu, Freeform’s Siren and Jane Austen, then you will love this book. At the end of the interview, host Laura von Holt comes up with a slogan that we all need tatted on our bodies: If you can believe in mermaids, you can believe in yourself!

Topics discussed:

  • Harlots on Hulu
  • courtesans and sex workers in 18th century London
  • 18th century life in London
  • mermaid history
  • “feejee mermaids”
  • mermaid exhibits in The British Museum
  • Ningyo, Japanese water sprites
  • The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar
  • Mermaid Podcast’s interview with Sarah Peverley
  • The Covent Garden Ladies by Hallie Rubenhold
  • The Gloaming by Kirsty Logan
  • Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill
  • The Pisces by Melissa Broder
  • Blackfish, the documentary
  • believing in mermaids
  • coastal stories of mermaids

There is a new mermaid movie out TODAY! And we interviewed the cast!

“The Little Mermaid,” starring Poppy Drayton ("Downtown Abbey"), and William Moseley (E!’s “The Royals”) will be exclusively releasing the film at AMC Theatres throughout the USA beginning August 17, 2018 including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston & Miami.

The story begins by retelling the classic Hans Christian Andersen story, but instead of meeting a tragic end as seafoam, the Little Mermaid is bound to an evil wizard who has trapped her soul in exchange for the chance to win the love of the prince. (BTW, none of this is spoiler-y, this all happens in the first minute of the movie.) The movie’s plot centers around a young reporter named Cam (played by William Moseley) who travels with his niece down to Mississippi to investigate a “miracle mermaid elixir” advertised by a traveling circus. There they encounter a beautiful and enchanting creature whom they believe to be the real little mermaid (played by Poppy Drayton). Host Laura von Holt was lucky to interview the two leads, Poppy Drayton and William Moseley, joined by writer/director Blake Harris.

A note on the audio: Little bit of trouble on Skype connection, so a couple of times Poppy’s voice drops out. Let’s just pretend it’s because she’s a mermaid and she had to shout from underwater.

Topics covered:

  • What it means to have the heart of a mermaid
  • worldbuilding and creating a unique mermaid mythology
  • training to film mermaid scenes
  • retelling of fairytales
  • healing power of mermaids
  • mermaid’s magic powers
  • transformative power of love
  • challenges of filming mermaid scenes
  • and the million dollar question: Do you believe in mermaids?

Find information about the film and where it’s playing at: http://thelittlemermaid.tv/

We are back with Season 2! You asked for more mermaid stories and mermaid legends, so that is what we are bringing to you! Mermaid historians, mermaid legends, mermaid books and mermaid authors! Of course, we will also be introducing you to real mermaids from time to time, but we’ll be focusing most on mermaid stories.

In this episode, we come full circle and also go back to the beginning. You may remember that in the first two episodes of Season 1, host Laura von Holt told you all about her time at mermaid camp at the world famous Weeki Wachee Springs! If you haven’t listened to those episodes yet, you should!

While Laura was at mermaid camp last year, she became very enamored of Vicki Smith, a legendary siren who still performs at Weeki Wachee at age 78. When she returned to mermaid camp in 2018, she was lucky enough to be paired with Vicki, as well as her mermaid friend, Alison (who you met in S1 E1).

In 2017, Vicki celebrated her 60th anniversary of swimming at Weeki Wachee. Vicki performed as a Weeki Wachee mermaid from 1957-1961, beginning just days after her high school graduation. Now, she is part of the elite group of “Legendary Sirens” women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who perform monthly at Weeki Wachee Springs.

Vicki invited Laura and Alison back to her home to watch the sunset and drink wine on her deck overlooking the crystal clear Weeki Wachee River. Vicki showed them her personal scrapbook and took them through her many memories of performing at Weeki Wachee in the 1950s and 60s. For over 70 years, Weeki Wachee mermaids have trained each other in underwater ballet using underwater air hoses so they can perform dozens of feet underwater. It’s a unique tradition handed down from woman to woman, and a trained eye can see the differences from each teacher & when they began their instruction.

Vicki allowed Laura to record her while we looked through the scrapbook, drank wine, and listened to the radio. She talked about about the changes she’s seen in the park, the show, and what it’s like to perform at age 17 and age 78. It’s a long interview, kind of like an oral history, but well worth your time.

Some of the mermaids that Vicki swam with are still with us, and some are now gone. But if you settle in with this episode, you’ll feel like you are right there, suspended in time, swimming right along with the Legendary Sirens of Weeki Wachee.

This is a very special episode, where host Laura von Holt interviews Hasan Hai, president of the Newfoundland & Labrador Beard and Mustache Club- and he’s also a MerB'y - that’s a group of Canadian mermen who are raising money for charity with a “dudeoir” merman calendar. We know, it’s a lot to take in, and it’s all amazing. Over the past few weeks, videos and articles about the MerB'ys have gone viral, and we have been positively squealing at our computer each time we saw these burly mermen who look like they are having the most fun ever. Luckily, Hassan just happened to be in NYC, and so we invited him over so we could wear our mermaid tails and talk mermen, philanthropy, masculinity, body positivity living your best life and doing good, whether it’s with a mermaid tail, a moustache, or whatever quite literally floats your boat. Plus, Hasan answered some listener questions! This interview was super fun, and we have a video version of it on YouTube and at mermaid podcast.com, so you’ll definitely want to go there so you can see it, and buy the MerBy 2018 calendar. Of course.

I talk with Mermaid River and Mermaid Amira, from Wands and Wishes Mermaids. They travel around the US, visiting aquariums to help entertain the public and raise awareness about the wonderful creatures in our ocean and fresh water ecosystems. We caught up with them during a break at the Newport Aquarium to learn about swimming with dinosaur fish, how zebra sharks are the golden retrievers of the ocean, and what they want people to learn about their underwater homes. Aquarium life seems pretty sweet, especially when your BFFs are also in your mer-pod. And, because you asked, we got some mermaid beauty tips for maximum under-the-sea style!

Meet Ali Weinstein, the director of a new documentary titled “Mermaids.” A feature documentary about the powerful allure of a universal myth, Mermaids immerses audiences in a world where fantasies come to life. Following the stories of five extraordinary tail-donning women who are part of a growing “mermaiding” subculture, audiences voyage between mermaid theme parks, conventions, tail-making studios, and deep into the ocean where transforming into the empowered icon of the mermaid is possible.

We chat about the inspiration behind the film, the filmmaking journey, the global mermaid community, how mermaiding helps people heal and transcend difficult pasts, and why mermaids are trending. Mermaids featured in the film include: Cookie and Ralph of The Harlem Mermaid, The Weeki Wachee Mermaids, Laurie and Rachel of Mermaid and Mom, Mermaid Julz, and the Dive Bar Mermaids

Who says mermaids and science can’t mix?! Anna Clapper, a.k.a. Aurelia, the Deep Blue Mermaid started her career as an experimental scientist, so we had to chat with her. We’ve never met a mermaid who was also in STEM! (Those are the fields of science technology, engineering and math, FYI.) Anna tells us all about how her grandfather inspired her to be a mermaid, and what it’s like to go from working in a lab to working in the water. We talk about the overlap between science and mermaiding, and how she started her business as the only professional mermaid in Columbia, South Carolina. Since Anna is also a Red Cross Lifeguard Training Provider, she shares a lot of important tips for staying safe in the water, both as a mermaid and a human.
