The NAAFI Break podcast highlights the transition from the military into second career success. The measure of success is subjective and different for everyone, although it is common to define it in many cases as achieving fulfilment by finding a new purpose. Within the Veterans Community there are many examples of ‘giving back’ and when someone leaves the Military and is successful a strong desire to ‘send the elevator down for the next person’ . Mark ‘Benny’ Hill is one of those people, driven to help, to continue to serve others and he has succeeded in negotiating his own transition, to be able to be in a position to continue serving with a purpose.

Another insightful and honest conversation with Mark that I am grateful to have had.

The NAAFI Break Podcast has covered many aspects of the transition from the military to a second career, always leaning on the 'truth' and lived experience of those who have served or connected to our Veteran Community. That is why when a guest opens up and expresses their emotions, it is a privelidge to bring their story to the wider consciousness. I have often asked guests if they joined to get away from the life they had or to seek a new adventure and it throws up many reasons for joining. This weeks guest is Angus Peacock, Coach, Leader and Royal Navy Veteran who has made the journey from 'The dark side' of Croydon life via the Royal Navy, China and now lives in San Diego. His career in the Royal Navy saw him commission, but it is his post military career that throws up the most interesting insights.
The effect of military service can have long lasting impact, not solely through PTSD,injury or medical discharge, but in the perception of self and behaviours that can be both positive and sometimes self destructive. Recognising your strengths and weaknesses is crucial in moving forward effectively.
Not every Veteran, was involved in 'Operations' or fired a weapon in conflict, many served during the queiter times in our military history, but still gave up part of their life to serve their country, always prepared to do what was necessary. It has been uncovered that many left the military because the Operations finished and the thing they most wanted in thier military career was not going to be available. Those that we not in conflict are just as worthy of the title Veteran and deserve recognition.
In over 120 episodes not often does the word 'shame' feature in the lived experience of our Veteran Community, but Angus Peacock explains why 'not doing enough' compared to those who served in conflict throws up some interesting points and his personal validation of his militar career and his part in the development of others was a long time coming after he left the Royal Navy.
Honest, open and insightful, this conversation was everything I hoped the NAAFI Break would be when it started in 2021.

Leaving the Military is different for everyone, with many distancing themselves initially before feeling the pullback to reconnect or give back to the Veteran Community. One thing that seemed part of our DNA while serving is being physically fit, albeit for some because there was a mandatory fitness test to pass every year. So why do so many people struggle to maintain their daily activity when they leave? I can't profess t have the silver bullet, my own post-service activity has been a rollercoaster of extremes (it's up right now!) My guest this week is Carl Simpson, an RAF Regiment Veteran who has become a Personal Trainer, using his unique lived experience to carve out a niche, appealing to other male Veterans.

Carl shared his own lived experience, how he has built his online PT business, and shared some insights and advice for those who have fallen out of love with 'Fizz' and beat themselves up about not being able to do what they used to do.

A thought-provoking and insightful conversation for anyone who has left the military but isn't leading their healthiest of lives today!

This week my Guest is Ria Jackson, Blogger, Advocate and founder of The V Word, who I would describe as a ‘Doer’. Using her own lived experience to trigger her drive, to create a safe space for Female Veterans to share their different stories.
Bringing the different perspectives into the open, is vital for society to learn how to support the needs of our Female Service Personnel both in Service and in transition.

Another great guest with unique insights and experiences to share to our community with the hope it helps those coming up behind.

This week my guest is Dorthe Jacobsen, a Dane who has contributed to a series of publications available to the Danish Military to help them understand the impact of their service, deployments etc on their family.
It looks through the lens of the children of different ages and highlights how behaviours and experiences can create an aftershock.
The implications of the serving soldiers behaviour can be destructive and the books help to prepare both parties for what could happen and ensure good communication within the family.
The parallels to the transition are evident. Dorthe has personal experience of this and it was insightful to hear the work that has been done in Denmark Perhaps there is a need to have something similiar in the UK?

I’m joined by Peter Lewis, an Army Veteran and Chief People Officer at SuperNova Capital. A Long way from the 16 year old, big fish - little pond, into the Army and a rude  awakening with a dodgy suitcase on arrival at Recruit Training.

It is always invigorating to hear the stories of second career success, but even more so when that person not only transitions well, but then ‘gives back’ to help the ne t generation of Service Leavers.
Roger Green is a man with an infectious energy and enthusiasm to share his experiences and help others, a trait which can be traced back to his early military training days, as the older cadet.

The detail and planning Roger went to when planning his transition is a great example of using your military training and skills to great effect.

Roger and I are working on further support for the Veteran Community in my day job with JobOppO.

His energy and desire to give back are what I describe as ‘A Good Apple’

The highest ranking guest to have joined me on the NAAFI Break, not that it is of huge significance, but  I have been curious to see a different perspective and approach to the transition process. What is more comforting and enlightening,  is that it is clear that rank has no bearing on post-service success and the challenges are consistent across all ranks.
Simon offers some excellent observations about translating your military experiences into confidence for your next career choice.

RAF Veteran Alistair McFarland joins me as my guest on the NAAFI Break podcast, discussing the change in mindset and priorities experienced when joining and leaving his military career.
Alistair was able to articulate the changes in his priorities and family considerations as well as the crucial communication between him and his wife when trying to find his next role after leaving the RAF.

A fantastic honest, reflection of the military transition, not around the technical skills transfer to civilian employment, but the most important thing family!

When I saw the 'NAAFI Break Veterans Hub' on LinkedIn,  I could not resist exploring and making contact with founder Sebastian Edwards-Beech, a Household Cavalry Veteran, who moved into a successful Private Security career on leaving the Army.

The NAAFI Break Veterans HUB in Wilmslow, was set up in the local areas to support  and engage with  Veterans. As we all remember the NAAFI Break was a time for providing,  brews, banter, support, help and advice.
This episode provides a personal lived experience, leading to a 'giving back' purpose, that is now driving him forward, Sebastian shares the emotional and personal impact of his military career and beyond.

I am back to kick off 2023 with another story of second career success after the military.
Alistair Scott, is well established in the Commercial world, having entered the Facilities Management sector after leaving an Army career behind, A REME Veteran, he transferred his skills and experience into the new environment with great success. He now runs his own company and has continued to serve, by giving back once he had settled into civvy street, via his charitable role with ‘Care after Combat’.
His lived experience and adaptation  to the new workplace rules is a great example of increased self awareness and growth.

Sean Foley, is the EQCommando. A former Royal Marine, he has crafted a career, launched off the back of a moment of stark realisation on a ridge in Kuwait.
His journey hasn’t been linear, more of a squiggly one, but he walks his own talk. He is comfortable in his own skin.

There are moments of honesty and the guts of   what’s behind his outlook, that will resonate with others, but importantly it’s his lived experience and honesty as he reflects that is of most value to Veterans and Service Leavers.

Founder of The Spearhead Foundation former Rifleman Craig and I first met on a rugby pitch 10 years ago. I had no idea of the personal journey he was on from his medical discharge from the Army following injuries sustained in Afghanistan.

The experience of that day and his journey since are great insight into the mindset and attitude he has. In his word he feels normal when surrounded by chaos. Success after service is relative and varied, but talking to Craig and charting his achievements to date are, in my mind an indicator of success.

Personal growth and self awareness are a regular theme in the guests we speak to, this episode emphasized this further.

For the first time I have invited a previous guest back to the NAAFI Break podcast. A year ago I came across a Veteran who was stirred to action by the Afghan Refugee crisis and he decided to do more than make an online donation to help. So began EMS4Afghans and a year of serving again. With the momentum building, global events created an extension to the original cause and Bridge to Unity was formed to support the Ukrainian situation.

Nature or nurture? When it comes to resilience and adaptability, some people develop the traits early in life. If we all had an easy life there would be no need to be resilient?

Rach Wiliamson, is an RAF Veteran, who before joining had to shift her energies into a different pathway after her Olympic dream disappeared, joining the RAF to 'see what would happen'.

Another setback, another layer of resilience and change required,  with retraining to a new trade due to a training injury early in her RAF career. we discuss the journey through career change, overcoming adversity and always bouncing back.

The journey so far, is impressive to say the least:
RAF Representative Rugby, Invictus Games Gold Medallist, Invictus Team UK Captain, Help for Heroes Ambassador, Recover Support Officer Royal British Legion, Role Model.
Of all my guests, this is a fantastic insight into setting goals, moving forward and finding a new purpose.

Tom gives his memory of being a forces kid, moving, settling and being independent away from home, before his future career was abruptly ended.

A chance meeting, taking the rise out of each other within 60 seconds, it’s almost a sport, but in reality it’s the mutual respect between Veterans. So when I first met Paul Breen at the inaugural Berkeley Marathon UK, it was a typical Army to RAF conversation.

Here is an Army Veteran, Kings Royal Hussars, who has faced the challenges around transition which initially took him on a downward spiral. His marriage suffered and his own health and well-being too. However his Army career gave him the resilience to make changes and say to himself ‘ I got through that, I can get through this’

Resilience
Adapatability
Willingness to get the job done
Can do attitude

A great insight into the reality for many Veterans when they leave behind a whole being existence and start a new career.

When I started NAAFI Break, it was always to speak to the 'Above Average Joe's' (my definition)  who go about their business, achieve success and help others in the Military to Veteran transition. I am always drawn to the stories of those who have decided to 'Give Back' and what the difference is between those who move forward and upwards, versus those who struggle and become angry about their Military career,  due to a lack of progress or promotion. The attitudes and mindset shift is fascinating to me.

What is it that drives us to make changes and lead to a successful transition?

Roxanne articulates really well the challenges of recognising her own value in the next phase of her career.

I often get asked about my day job and what the connection is to NAAFI a break. Well it’s hard to separate in some ways, as the goal of the NAAFI Break was to shine a light on positive lived experience of the military to Veteran transition and at JobOppO we are always trying to bring the lived experience of Veterans in the ‘Changing Gear’ to our OppOs. We talk to those who have successfully managed themselves and others in the 'Changing Gear' and explore the issues that arise and how to negotiate them.

So this episode was one I recorded for JobOppo, but I felt it was too good not to share to the wider audience via NAAFI Break.
In this episode I speak to Kris Milne, Australian Army Veteran  and champion of Veteran causes, throughout his post military career and about changing the perception of 'being just a Corporal' by the individual themselves and Employers.

A great conversation, thought provoking, honest and insightful.

This weeks guest is former RAF PTI and founder of STAR Development UK Stuart Waddington, who was my interviewer for the 1yr episode of NAAFI Break, so I was delighted to have him back to discuss the journey and his business experiences.

Bio

Founder of Star Development UK, and host of the “#Leadership – What’s on your Mind?” Podcast, Stuart Waddington delivers leadership and transformational development programmes and one-to-one coaching to high performing teams, individuals, senior managers, CEO’s and other top performers.

With a strong background in sports that saw him earn a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science, Stuart’s interest in high performance and the links between body and mind extend beyond the playing field into the business world and other key areas of life. He continues his mindset coaching and mentoring work with sports teams and elite athletes; but offers his guidance and experience to all seeking to excel. A natural people person, Stuart uses his experience to identify and overcome issues that are preventing people and teams achieving their full potential in any discipline.

Stuart left the RAF in 2018 having served 12 years delivering leadership training and physical training to basic trainees, instructors, senior officers and specialist teams across all three of the Armed Forces. He founded Star Development UK to apply his military experience to civilian situations.

To build on his experience outside of his “military bubble”, he embarked on a successful collaboration with the University of Cumbria, teaching life skills to students on the cusp of entering the working world. He also engaged with owners of growing businesses who found themselves seeking guidance with the unfamiliar demands of team leadership. He also worked as an associate delivering development training programmes to management teams within multiple government departments.

This week I speak to RAF Veteran Al Edmonds a former RAF PTI and now OU Lecturer.
For the first time on the NAAFI Break podcast I had the chance to speak to someone from the LBGT Community about the challenge of being a gay man in the RAF during the 70s-90s. A different time and a different culture within the RAF, but a very honest reflection, from someone who served their country.

The Military transition is different for everyone, my aim has always been to uncover the ways different people have negotiated this period in their lives sunder many different circumstances.

Please comment and share to anyone who wants to understand more about the Military to Veteran transition.

The Military Wives Choirs is a registered charity and network of 75 choirs in British military bases across the UK and overseas, bringing women in the military community closer together through singing. With over 2,200 members, the MWC network is tri-service and any woman with a military connection can join including those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters, empowering women from across the military community. The organisation is also a subsidiary charity of SSAFA.

The first choir held their first rehearsal in April 2010 in Catterick Garrison. It was the idea of two Scots Guards wives who decided, whilst their husbands were deployed in Afghanistan in 2009, to put up posters at the Garrison to actively encourage and look for women interested in singing together, to help support and give the wives a focus whilst their husbands deployed. They engaged a well-known local music teacher and set about putting together a choir made up of wives, girlfriends and servicewomen and so the first choir was formed. A letter was written to choirmaster Gareth Malone looking for help and support with the choir; at that time he was receiving acclaim for his BBC television programme The Choir and felt that this was an idea that could be replicated.

This week we talk to Guy Batchelor, Army Veteran, 22 years in the Royal Engineers and now founder of Minerva Elite Performance Ltd offering Masters in Business Adminstration.

Guy, talks with great honesty and reflection on his Army career and the impact on him that carries forward to today. He had a plan, which he was not afraid to change when the realisation came about his new purpose and crucially had the advice and support of his wife, to nudge him to make the move to setting up Minerva Elite Performance.

A great example of being comfortable with ambiguity, thinking for yourself and finding a balance to work, family and life.

A Open Water swimming Triple Crown holder! Find out what that is, as I didn't know either. It is a great insight into his personal mindset too.

On George Vlachonikolis’ 25th birthday, he was holding an SA80 assault rifle. Inside his webbing pouches were 150 rounds of ammunition, two HE grenades, two smoke grenades, a small survival kit, 20 Marlboro Lights, and a medikit that included two sticks of morphine and two tourniquets. Strapped to the left-hand side of his Osprey body armour, within easy reach, was his bayonet. George was in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

On George’s 37th birthday, he was wearing a striped cotton twill shirt and well-ironed beige chinos. A thin fabric lanyard carried his ID badge proudly. In front of him was a class of secondary school students, who were settling down and getting ready for their next lesson. George was in a school in the UK.

From Camouflage to Classroom is about everything George learned with the British Army in Afghanistan and has brought to his classroom teaching today. By reflecting on the most intense and thought-provoking experiences of his life, George aims to explore the role of the classroom teacher from an original perspective: one based on military principles and practice.

This book takes a direct, human and very honest look at the challenges faced by classroom teachers today and offers some military-inspired solutions. A share of the royalties from this book will go to support Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the charity for bereaved British Forces children. www.scottyslittlesoldiers.co.uk

About the Author

George Vlachonikolis is a teacher at a school in Oxford. At 23, he joined the British Army and served in two operational tours of Afghanistan. After a six-and-a-half-year military career, George shifted gears into a new challenge: becoming a schoolteacher. Now, as an experienced veteran of both combat and classroom, he is keen to explore the overlaps between the two fields.

George currently teaches economics at A-level and IB, and is the PGCE lead for economics at a well-known university. He lives in Oxford with his wife and two daughters.

This week on the NAAFI Break we focus on the transition 'into' as well as 'out of' the military.

I first came across the post below from Andy Challen and immediately identified what I have felt for some time, the need for good mentors and role models for our children. That person who will light the flame of ambition or nurture and support to show that 'anyone can' reach their potential. That kind of person, the mentor, crops up time and time again in the transition particularly with Veterans helping Veterans. I will ask you at the end of this episode to recognize who your 'mentor' has been since deciding to leave the military?

There are two jobs that everyone wants to be in the RAF, PTI or Pilot! #ifyouknowyouknow

Original post from Andy Challen MA CMgr FInstLM MSyl

Innovation Champion at Inzpire Ltd

For those not getting the A level (edit - or GCSE) results expected or needed today:

I wanted to be an RAF pilot and decided to study A-level Geography and Modular Technology (electronics, pneumatics, structures). But I failed O Level Maths due to disrupted teenage years in a single-parent family where I believe my mother suffered mental health issues.

My retake O Level maths class clashed with some of my A-level classes. I was the only person in the town studying Modular Technology (the first year it had been run so I was the test case). Each subject was taught in a different school so I cycled around the town of Stevenage trying to get to the classes on time.

I skipped some of the technology classes to go to maths classes as I needed the maths to be an RAF pilot.

My Headteacher found out and told me he would give me a bad reference if I did not attend and pass the Modular Technology class. So I quit subjects I really enjoyed after a year and did a 4-year apprenticeship at BAE Dynamics. I worked 4 days a week with 50 or so great colleagues in my intake year and we went to college one day a week and 3 evenings a week most terms. I went into lodgings at 17.

I got the academic qualifications needed. I lived on the breadline and caught rabbits in the local woods to supplement my diet, but had no debt. I spent 4 years in the high tech industry. I planned for 5 years but at the end of the apprenticeship, most of us were not offered jobs. The Cold War was ending and the defence industry was crashing.

I drove a 7.5 tonne truck (as you could in those days on a normal licence) and worked long hours delivering fresh and frozen meat and veg to pubs, hotels and hospitals. I waited for my RAF application to be processed and to attend selection. I promised the family firm I would stay on for Christmas, their busiest period.

I joined the RAF and served 24 years, became a Qualified Flying Instructor and Electronic Warfare Instructor on the Tornado and reached the rank of Wing Commander. I went to Staff College and struggled through a Masters. I have O levels, and a Masters. No A levels. No degree.

The flight plan is not always direct routing. Stay loose, chill your jets, find your own path.

NAAFI Reak podcast shines a light on the transition process from the Military to a successful second career. We take on every angle and influence on the transition, without brushing over the uncomfortable issues. My guests have all been, brutally honest, raw in their recall of diff times and candid in their views. There is an authentic lived experience that has been shared and it has served to raise awareness, prick the conscience and start debate among people who can influence change.

In my opinion, whilst not compulsory, I believe it is really important that as Veterans we give back to the Veteran Community, Veterans helping Veterans!

The NAAFI Break podcast started as my way of giving at the start of lockdown, following a long held belief that the transition process and the impact on the person and their family was not acknowledged or supported properly. The NAAFI BREAK PODCAST has been a catalyst for some great connections and conversations so far. I have been fortunate to find some inspiring guests, who have shared their personal experiences of the transition. It has become apparent that their are many angles that we can look at the transition from, even from the outside, through the eyes of those who support the transition process too, without having worn a military uniform themselves, but who are skilled in the understanding of transition. It doesn't just apply to the military, everyone experiences some form of transition process in their career at some point.
In the coming episodes I will be bring these views and experiences to the table alongside the personal journeys of those who have left the service career behind.

Today it's a timely Olympic connection with a 'bonus' episode featuring Cara Button, Senior Manager for 'Game Plan' part of the Candian Olympic Committee and delivering resources with Elite Athlete support. Cara supports athletes with goal setting, career development, education and the all important transition planning. Life beyond sports career, to develop mentally stronger athletes, who apply what they have learned to the betterment of themselves and their communities.
The parallels to the military transition are incredibly close. The transition the process has to be understood and learned -it is more than finding a new job!

Please share to anyone with a Armed Forces connection or to anyone interested in understanding more about the skills and experience that Service leavers have to offer.

The NAAFI Break podcast shines a light on the transition from the Military to a successful second career. It is not just about the job hunt, the transition is about finding purpose and fulfilment as well as security.

This episode(in conjunction with the bonus episode featuring Cara Button) highlights the life with Elite sport and in this instance the simultaneous existence within a Military career.
Tom De La Hunty is a member of the RAF Physical Education ‘Wall of Fame’. He epitomises the striving for excellence and achievement, his story balances the needs of being an Olympic athlete, an RAF PTI and later a Physical Education Officer.

He highlights the opportunity he was given in the RAF, but crucially acknowledges the role of his wife in support of his goals. Here is another angle and consideration for those looking at their own transition journey.

The NAAFI BREAK PODCAST has reached 1500 downloads since it started. It has been a catalyst for some great connections and conversations so far. Why?

Transition actually means more than leaving the service - for some it alludes to a period of mourning, stepping away from a ingrained vocabulary and relationships. At it’s best, this served as an all embracing culture that made service personnel secure , valued and gave them a purpose.
The transition the process has to be understood and learned -it is more than finding a new job!

There are recurring themes, at times our guests are scarily frank and there have been sensitive discussions with veterans, who have experienced the darker side of ‘transitioning’.
There are those who have experienced overwhelming hurt and disappointment dealing with remnants of culturalisation, that will hit a chord with many.

We explore and discover how Veterans achieve personal growth, find a new purpose . This is often translated into support to other veterans, which we celebrate. Success in transition is not judged merely by the size of the salary, it is about fulfillment and purpose.

The subject matter visits both ends of the spectrum - those who the military support and nurture, who go on to achieve some semblance of normality and can look back on their time with a smile, but also those who have have had to negotiate, (eventually successful) the barriers which are on the path.

It is not uncommon to find that, you are no longer a big shot and no one understands or cares what you did or what you were in the Service, it can be sobering, for some a source of anger and frustration - this can be a call to action for those considering leaving, to prepare and soften the blow!

Today we smash the myth around Inter Service rivalry and talk to former RAF PTI Grant Richards and Army Parachute Regiment Jason Thompson, who have forged a successful business in partnership after leaving their Service career behind.

Please share to anyone with a Armed Forces connection or to anyone interested in understanding more about the skills and experience that Service leavers have to offer.

In this episode we meet Gerry Howson,  who has spent a career either in  uniform or working with those in uniform. He has met and dealt with historical attitudes and prejudices, but has created his own footprints and forged a successful career beyond his time in the RAF.
I have known Gerry since 1985 as a fellow recruit and I was unaware back then, of some of the challenges he faced and overcame.  Having moved to the UK from Montserrat in the 1960’s, his example to others will be seen as one of personal growth, resilience and retaining dignity during intense pressure.

I am joined by past Staff, Graham Hughes, Robert Quantock, John Weedon, Gareth Davies, Matt Wilkinson to discuss what’s changed and what hasn’t in the past 50 years of PTI trade training.

Welcome to the NAAFI break podcast, where we shine a light on the transition process from the military. We speak to Veteranfamily about their experiences and the challenges they faced on leaving the Service and finding a new purpose.

We have looked at the transition through several lenses, this week we change again, to look at the end of the Service career that is thrust open the individual by injury. Lee Spencer is by my definition an Above Average Joe, who growing up wanted to be a brave person. His journey is both raw, emotional and inspiring, with total honesty as he speaks.

Following a traumatic accident which saw him lose his leg, he is now an ambassador for BLESMA and his sole purpose is to keep the injured service personnel in the public consciousness, with incredible feats of human endurance and speaking to others about his experiences.

Please share to anyone with a Service connection or who is interspersed in understanding more about what our Services families have to offer.

There is a bonus episode linked to this in which Veteranfamily read the Rudyard Kipling poem“Tommy” discussed by Lee during his interview.

In this episode meet Alan Knell, following 9 years in the Royal Navy, Alan in his own words, didn't have a clear direction for the next chapter of his career, so took what was on offer initially. However, a desire to give back to the Armed Forces saw him volunteer to be a Co-ordinator for the Poppy Appeal in his area. That was the catalyst for a new and fulfilling path, that today, finds him working for the Firefighters Charity.
