No Guilt Mom

Feeling overwhelmed as a mom? Tired of doing everything for your kids and wish… just wish… someone would step in to help you out?

Welcome to the No Guilt Mom parenting podcast hosted by author, teacher & parenting coach JoAnn Crohn, M.Ed and co-host parenting coach & educator, Brie Tucker.

Every Tuesday, we give you practical advice for moms and positive parenting tips - all without the shame and guilt. We make it fun.

We’re from a generation where our moms were supposed to be able to do it all. They went to work and yet were still expected to take care of the house and kids.

Our moms put everything extra they had into us kids and we realize there is a better way.

The way to give your kids your best is to give yourself the very best - without the mom guilt. How to master positive parenting without doing absolutely everything.

That means focusing on what you like to do. If you don’t like playing LEGO’s on the floor with your kids, you don’t have, too.

In my parents’ generation, moms gave up everything for their kids and I don’t want to do that.

Kids who learn how to be self-sufficient are happier kids and have happier moms.

Welcome to the No Guilt Mom podcast!

If you've ever felt overwhelmed and close to a breaking point, you're not alone!

In this episode, we're diving into the concept of the mental load, something that's been all over social media lately. Moms often take on the role of being our children's counselor in relationships and emotions, absorbing their feelings and challenges. Combine that with managing the family's overall mood, predicting potential stressors, and trying to create harmony within the household….it’s overwhelming, to say the least. We're shedding light on six hidden tasks that might be adding to your mental load and pushing you to the edge. We'll chat about the idea of a "body budget" from Mona Delahooke's book, Brain Body Parenting, and how it relates to sensory input and overwhelm.

Join us as we explore the challenges, misconceptions, and strategies to lighten that mental load and find some balance!

In this episode of the No Guilt Mom podcast, you’ll learn:

  • How to identify and acknowledge the unnoticed tasks that add to your mental load.
  • Common false assumptions and myths about mental load that can hinder your ability to effectively manage it.
  • Practical strategies to actively reduce and balance your mental load, enhancing overall well-being.
  • Recognizing signs of progress and implementing self-care practices to prevent burnout and maintain mental health.

  • The importance of meeting basic needs like safety and connection before delving into behavior challenges.

Hearing the word pushover immediately riles us up. No one wants to be called a pushover as a parent. But all too often we hear that word being thrown around at parents who choose not to use punishments in their approach to discipline. Here’s the thing: punishments are not effective. If you’ve never heard this before, you’re probably thinking, these women sound crazy. But what if there was a way to implement consistent consequences that are rational and realistic for your children, teaching them life skills instead of just punishing them? By the end of this episode, you’ll have a strong argument against anyone who calls you a pushover for not punishing your kids!

Let’s dive in!

As moms, we can get so wrapped up in everything going on around us that we kind of forget how to have fun and how to do something just fun for us! We always think about our kids and if they are having fun or even our partner, and if they are getting to have fun. Moms quickly go to the back burner. And even on the off chance you do try to do something fun for yourself, you always have those kids following you around saying how bored they are.

Sound familiar?

This episode is for everyone who doesn’t know how to find fun anymore. If that sounds like you, it’s time to ditch the naysayers and learn how to have a good time!!

Venus shares her story of how she went from a stay-at-home mom to being thrust into the workforce with no experience living in a 2 bedroom house, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, to then successfully supporting herself and her family. We know that there's a lot that we're up against as parents. We know that game technology, and a lot of the apps on phones and on-screen devices are created in a certain manner to get you to be addicted and to want to do it over and over again. But regardless, we have to be able to extract from it in some way, shape, or form.

In this episode of the No Guilt Mom podcast, you’ll learn:

  • Your child’s tantrum when you take away technology might not be caused by an addiction to their iPad, phone, etc.
  • Why you shouldn’t take on everybody else's judgment because you're trying to enforce your family’s boundaries
  • How to have a discussion with your kids and agree on the limits together.

Life can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. We often have what we believe to be a certain path for our lives and what we want for our families, but sometimes life throws us an unexpected curveball. We can feel overwhelmed, uncertain, and scared. We can feel lost in what our lives were meant to be and what our purpose is. Sometimes we just want to throw our arms up in the arm in complete frustration. But instead of doing that, what if you take this opportunity to get your bearings and find what you’re truly meant to do? And in the meantime, show your kids that we all can do scary things, and even the unexpected isn’t such a bad thing.

In this podcast episode, we’re joined byDave Hollis. Dave is an author, podcast host, and entrepreneur and helps small business owners as an integrator/consultant. He a busy dad to four kids ages 15, 14, 10, and 5, has been a foster parent many times over, and he just released a new children's book calledHere's to Your Dreams!: A Teatime with Noah Book.

We get candid about life and parenting and how sometimes, we’re so sure of what our life is meant to be; only to realize that we have a completely different journey awaiting us. And how when we share those experiences with our kids, how we can not only survive, but thrive throughout those unknowns- it can help build those skills in them to believe that we can do scary things.

In this podcast episode, we tackle the thing many of us do, but aren’t even aware of. Allowing our fear and anxiety to take the wheel when we’re parenting. It would be easy to call this helicopter parenting, but it is so much more. This “parenting through fear” is driven by our anxiety and fear that something bad will happen if we leave our kids to their own devices or if they make a wrong choice.

But there are things we can do to nip this parenting bad habit in the bud. We share 3 easy ways to stop parenting through fear and start positive parenting with confidence!

We all have those moments in parenting where it seems like your child is just trying to push your buttons. It feels like it’s you against them. But what if we told you that’s not it at all, and that by changing the way you react in those pivotal moments, you could have a much calmer experience with those button-pushing, big-emotion moments?

In this podcast we are chatting with Mr. Chazz, the Founder of Mr. Chazz's Leadership, Parenting and Teaching Podcast, parent coach, speaker, teacher, and content creator. He helps adults understand and guide children, Breaking Generational Cycles, all while using Conscious Discipline techniques.

As mothers, we often feel guilty for having opposing feelings about motherhood. We tell ourselves that we should be grateful for everything that we do have which only negates our feeling when we aren't “loving” being a mom at the moment. But guess what, you can be both happy and sad about being a moms. That’s okay.

In this podcast we talk with Kelly Smith, a globally celebrated yoga and meditation teacher, founder of Yoga For You, and host of the podcasts, Mindful In Minutes and Meditation Mama. Kelly believes that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to yoga and meditation and encourages her students to find their own personal practice, listen to their bodies, and find inner joy by accessing their most authentic selves and owning their power.

We talk about how sometimes we are just “touched out” and how important it is to be kinder to yourself, and allow yourself to feel happy and sad about being a mom.

We all know that lack of sleep affects how you learn and develop. And we know that most teens don't get enough sleep. They stay up late at night and then have to get up and start their school day before many of us parents even start our work day. But what if we told you there’s a reason for that, a biological one, and that chances are good that your teen's current school start time conflicts with the current research on teen brain development?

In this podcast episode we are talking with Lisa Lewis. She’s a parenting journalist and author of book, The Sleep-Deprived Teen. Lisa focuses on the intersection of parenting, public health and education, and helped spark California's landmark healthy-school-start-times law.

We talk about how sleep deprivation heightens impulsive & risky behaviors (especially in teens), why the current school start schedule is the way it is in the U.S., and what parents can do to help their teen get enough sleep.

Has this happened to you? You walk into the living room and see your kid’s shoes thrown on the couch. You calmly ask your kid to take their shoes off the couch and put them away. You come back later, and there is your kid, and there are the shoes. Still on the couch. So you ask again, and your kids tells you that they will do it in a minute. Then you come in the room again, and nothing has happened. Neither the shoes nor your kid has moved. You absolutely lose it! You yell at your kid, they yell back at you or start crying, and then you end up putting the shoes away yourself.

It’s estimated that about 32% of American teens have anxiety. Are we surprised? Our kids have a lot on their plates: getting good grades, social media, and everything involved with that, navigating and maintaining friendships. And it gets even more difficult when you add anxiety to the mix. And as moms, we often feel like it’s our job to take it all on, support, and even fix it all for our kids. Guess what? You’re not supposed to be your child’s therapist! You can’t fix it all.

In this episode, we are talking with Regine Galanti. She’s the founder of Long Island Behavioral Psychology, a private practice in NY, and Author of Anxiety Relief for Teens her newest book, When Harley Has Anxiety. She specializes in helping kids, teens, and parents manage anxiety through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and specifically giving them tools to help them face their fears.

We share all the fears we have as parents about our kids' anxiety, how our own beliefs can affect how we view anxiety in our kids and what we can actually do to help our kids if we feel they’re struggling with anxiety.

When our kids are feeling upset, many of us have been told that we need to teach our kids how to self-regulate on their own. But if we take a long hard look into neurodevelopment and how that affects our body and behaviors, and our kids' bodies and behaviors, you can see that kids can’t always regulate themselves. But how do we help them learn to self-regulate then?

In this episode, we speak with Dr. Mona Delahook, a Child Psychologist and author of Beyond Behaviors as well as her newest book, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids. She’s a mom to 3 grown kids ranging from 26-34, and is trying to shift the lens and change the paradigm of how our world views challenging behaviors!

We talk about how others can experience certain situations in a different way than others, how we can help our kids by using co-regulation, and what can we do as parents to nurture and build our kids’ ability to self-regulate.

Let's face it, caregivers have been the biggest unsung heroes of our time. Working mothers have had to juggle career responsibilities with providing for their families, often at the expense of their own well-being and mental health.

It's high time that companies take notice of this silent sacrifice made by women as caregivers and start making real change in the way society values care work.

In this podcast episode we are joined by Blessing Adesiyan, the Founder of Mother Honestly, a complete ecosystem reshaping the future of women and families at home and in the workplace. Prior to founding Mother Honestly, she spent 15+ years in Fortune 100 companies such as Microsoft, HP, Cargill, PepsiCo, DuPont, and BASF where she built operational excellence framework across the United States, Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia.

We discuss why the corporate world doesn’t understand how to effectively support employee caregivers, especially working moms, how women are the biggest gatekeepers when it comes to caring for children and protecting men's time, and what we can start doing now to make real change in the way society values care work.

Raising teens can be a daunting task for any parent, but it doesn't have to be. With the right guidance and tools, you can raise your teen with positive mental health and follow your “Parent Compass”.

We recently sat down with Cindy Muchnick, M.A., and Jenn Curtis, M.S.W., authors of the book, The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen's Wellness and Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World. They help tweens and teens navigate middle and high school culminating in the college admissions process.

We talked about what teens are currently going through both in high school and as they prepare to transition into that next phase of life (outside their parental home), and now we're going to provide you with tips on how to find and use your “parent compass” to foster positive mental well-being and emotional resilience in your teen.

No matter where you live, or your religious or political views, the odds are good that most parents share one common goal...

we don’t want our kids to be A-holes.

Join us in this podcast episode as we sit down with science journalist, columnist for The New York Times, and author of the book How To Raise Kids Who Aren’t Assholes, Melinda Wenner Moyer. Melinda is a mom to two boys, living in New York’s Hudson Valley. She digs into the science on raising kind, compassionate, worldly kids and translate it for a lay audience.

We have a lively conversation about why it may not be a good thing to parent the exact same way as your friends or family do, why it’s good to make mistakes as a parent, how contingent love can raise an a-hole, and what you can do to raise your kids to be kind and compassionate.

Heads up: This is a parents-only podcast episode. The kids probably don’t want to listen to this one.

In this podcast episode, we’re getting down and dirty and being very frank in our conversation with our guest Amy Lang, MA, who’s been a sexual health educator for over 25 years.

We talk about the discomfort so many of us feel when talking to our kids not only about sex, but sexuality, masturbation, and everything else in between.

Amy gives us some amazing tips on how to start those uncomfortable (but necessary) conversations with your kids about sex, what you can start doing to now to protect your child online, and why it’s important to make a mind-shift from negative prevention to intellectual preparation.

As women, sometimes we feel like we can’t say “no” to others in fear of being resented. But that’s not true! It's hard to say no, it's hard to set those healthy boundaries, but they're definitely necessary for our own well-being.

In this podcast episode, we push back against that uncomfortable feeling when we have to say “no” to a request (typically from our family or friends) and give you a super easy framework to follow (it’s only 3 steps) to be confident in your boundaries and to let you know that you’re allowed to say “No”, and NOT feel guilty about it!

Anxiety seems to be everywhere these days. No one can ignore the impact the pandemic had on our collective mental health, especially those of our children. Before the pandemic, approximately 5.8 million kids between the ages of 13-17 had a diagnosis of anxiety. These days the mental health community estimates it closer to almost half of all teens in the U.S. are experiencing anxiety. But we have some hope for all of us parents. Not all anxiety is bad. As a matter of fact, healthy anxiety can help build resilience. And once you know the difference between healthy and unhealthy anxiety, you can better support your kids and their well-being.

In this episode, we are joined by Lisa Damour, Ph.D. is a Psychologist, Author, and Co-host "Ask Lisa" podcast. Lisa specializes in untangling family life and is the mom to two teenagers. Dr. Damour talks with us about what healthy anxiety looks like in our kids and what unhealthy anxiety looks like, as well as what we can do to support our kids as they navigate these feelings of anxiety in their everyday life.

Being a mom has many demands on a daily basis when it comes to our families, but there are also many demands when it comes to moms and working. A survey done in 2021 shows that more than half of all students report they’re struggling to complete schoolwork and almost half find it hard to focus in class. Why is that? It’s very possible that the standards for teaching in the U.S. are a bit behind the times. Kids have different educational needs, and yet, for the most part, our educational system hasn’t changed much over the past 200 years! One thing is for sure- one size doesn’t fit all for education!

In this episode, we are talking with Jerry Kolber, co-creator and narrator of the hit children's podcast WHO SMARTED?, Emmy-nominated co-creator and showrunner of Nat Geo's biggest hit series BRAIN GAMES, and Netflix's BRAINCHILD with Pharrell Williams.

We talk about how kids can’t all be taught with the same strategies (read this chapter and then retain it for your next test). Kids have different needs, both emotional and educational and that’s why we need to change the game in education.

Do you shy away from asking for things that you want because you’re afraid that it will be viewed as selfish? Many of us feel guilty and don’t ask for things that we really want (such as time away from the kids or even spending money on something that is just for us) because we are afraid that we are being so selfish.

In this episode we will be discussing what causes that stress and guilt when we want something that can be defined as “selfish”, ask if being selfish is actually a bad thing, and walk you through how to go after and really ask for what you want.

Has this happened to you? You walk into the living room and see your kid’s shoes thrown on the couch. You calmly ask your kid to take their shoes off the couch and put them away. You come back later, and there is your kid, and there are the shoes. Still on the couch. So you ask again, and your kid tells you that they will do it in a minute. Then you come into the room again, and nothing has happened. Neither the shoes nor your kid has moved. You absolutely lose it! You yell at your kid, they yell back at you or start crying, and then you end up putting the shoes away yourself.

If this sounds familiar to you, then you will love this episode. It was made just for you! We will share practical ways you can keep your cool as well as strategies you can use in the moment and after it, using our simple 5 step process: P.E.A.C.E.

In this episode, we speak with Kim Hopkins, LICSW who’s a Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Trainer and Director of Outreach for Lives in the Balance. There she works with parents, educators, and providers to share the research that shows kids with concerning behaviors aren’t lacking motivation, they’re lacking skills, especially those related to flexibility, adaptability, emotion regulation, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving.

We talk about how we often mislabel our kids' motivations for bad behavior as something done for attention, when often, it’s a matter of our kids simply missing skills. Kim share some great examples of times when kids had meltdowns and/or extreme behaviors that were damaging their relationships at home and school, and simply using 3 steps in collaborative problem solving the situations were resolved quickly and the relationship between child, parents, and teachers remained intact.

We share all the fears we have as parents about our kids anxiety, how our own beliefs can affect how we view anxiety in our kids and what we can actually do to help our kids if we feel they’re struggling with anxiety.

As moms, we often put our needs last. So many of us believe it’s our job to take care of everyone in our family all the time and if there’s anything left over, then we can maybe do something small for ourselves. But that’s just a great way to burn ourselves out. If we could just make a shift in our thought process on where we fall in the family needs hierarchy and then start speaking up for what we need, we could accomplish so much more!

In this episode, we’re discussing how to advocate for yourself with Heather Hansen. She’s a self-advocacy expert, on-air legal analyst, author, and award-winning trial attorney. Her specialty is self-advocacy and how to use those tools in everyday situations.

We talk about the importance of putting yourself on that list of priorities and how to ditch the guilt so we can truly be happy getting what we need in life.

Over time things evolve. And that applies to everything in life. Lots of times, the questions and challenges we faced as kids, aren’t the same ones our own kids face. Not the least of which applies to those big questions around sexuality. And how do you answer their questions or have a conversation with your kids about them, when chances are good, that you never had this conversation as a kid yourself? That’s exactly why we called in our friend and sexual education expert Brittany McBride.

In this episode, we welcome back Brittany McBride, MPH, the Associate Director of Sex Education at Advocates for Youth. So many of us are told that if we were a “good” mom that we would be able to do everything perfectly and be fulfilled solely in our identity as a mom, but guess what- that’s a lie!

Why is it that we get so wrapped up in checking things off our to-do list that we miss out on the things that truly fill our soul and help us be the best versions of ourselves?

In this episode, we’re joined by Ryan Haddon, Life & Spiritual Coach, Meditation Teacher, and Hypnotherapist. She helps women create more happy, healthy, and more balanced lives. She’s the daughter of an international supermodel and actress and had a wonderfully unique life growing up in Toronto, New York, and Paris. She now lives in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and is a mother to 4 kids ages 7, 9, 20, and 22.

We chat about our own struggles trying to let go of that image of who we “had” to be and what we found was our true, authentic self. And the whole bumpy journey that was in between.

Many of us have good memories of our parents and growing up, but then...there are the not-so good things. Maybe it’s the “My house my rules!” statement that you heard from your parents over and over again, or maybe it’s how your parents never had any consistency with their rules growing up. No matter what experience we had, one thing is for certain- our parents influence how we parent. For good and for bad.

In this episode, we're joined by Besty Stover as we laugh so hard that we cry as we ask that question…Do I parent like my mom did? Betsy Stover is the host of the podcast “Why Mommy Drinks”. She’s a comedian and a mom that helps other parents feel less alone, by showing them that all of us are a hot mess and reminding them that they are doing a great job.

So listen along, laugh with us and see what realizations you have, like, do you echo-locate in your parenting too?

When it comes to parenting, so many of us want to raise “good kids”. Kids who will be kind to others, who can problem-solve, kids who truly understand and act out of compassion, and who understand inclusivity, justice, and equality. But there is often a space between raising “good kids” and raising pro-justice kids. That’s where the concept of Social Justice Parenting comes in.

In this episode, we are talking with Dr. Traci Baxley, a professor, consultant, parenting coach, speaker, mother to five bi-racial children, creator of the Social Justice Parenting program and author of Social Justice Parenting: How to Raise Compassionate, Anti-Racist, Justice-Minded Kids in an Unjust World. She’s been an educator for over 30 years with degrees in child development, elementary education, and curriculum and instruction.

Dr. Baxley shares with us a very vulnerable conversation where we talk about how to address race with our kids, how to engage in Social Justice parenting, and what the ROCKS of Social Justice parenting are.

Who doesn’t know the current statistic that 50% of all marriages end in divorce? Even if you haven’t experienced divorce yourself, odds are very high that you have someone close to you who is or has been through a divorce. But few people talk openly about the emotional toll they go through while contemplating divorce.

In this episode, we welcome Erin Royer, the founder of Your Village an online resource for parents and host of the Parenting Beyond Discipline podcast. She gives parents tools to support their children to reach their individual potentials. Erin recently released her first book, "The Connected Parents Guide to Toddlerhood - Fixes for 7 Common struggles"!

We talk openly and honestly about the guilt that so many go through when trying to decide if it’s time to divorce, what the research says on the effects of parents staying in an unhappy relationship, and what parents can do to support their kids (and their own) mental health during and after divorce.

If you want your kids to learn about math, reading, writing, you name it- there’s a curriculum for it. But it’s not so easy when you are trying to teach your kids about their social-emotional skills. Those skills are things like how to deal with conflict, how to join a group of kids, naming and processing your own emotions, and being thoughtful & empathetic in our actions towards others. All things that every parent wants their kids to know and master!

In this episode we’re talking with Marcelle Waldman, El Ed. the mom of 2, early childhood educator, creator and owner of FeelLinks feeling plush dolls and journal set. Her passion is educating parents and caretakers on the importance of building emotional intelligence in our children (and ourselves).

We cover everything our kids (and us as parents) need to know about empathy, emotional intelligence, and coping skills so we can avoid those major emotional meltdowns and be resilient in life.

It never fails. Every year your kid will forget their lunch or their homework. You are running through the house in the morning yelling (so everyone can hear you) that it’s time to go, as your youngest whines from his room that he can’t find his shoes, and your daughter says that her library book is missing and she absolutely can’t go to school without her library book on library day.

Sigh! The frustration builds and you decide that the only way to avoid this mess is to remind & nag your kids or do just do it all yourself. And you are so very wrong mama!

In this episode, we share with you our 4 ways to make sure your kids remember everything they need for school this year (without you reminding them or doing it for them!).

We need you to know one cold, hard truth. Regardless of everything else happening in your life, your kids are NOT justified in treating you poorly. And the same goes for you.

As kids, many of us were taught a generation ago to simply listen to and follow adults.

Because I said so! No questions asked.

Have you ever stopped and wondered where so many of us got the idea that we need to make our kids feel worse in order to get better behavior from them? Hmmm.

So in this episode, we give you 7 simple ways to get RESPECT in your home! Yes! 7 simple ways- it's really that easy!

In this episode, we talk with Einat Nathan, a parenting expert, counselor, and author from Israel. Her first book Haimsheli, was a bestseller across all categories in Israel, making her a national celebrity. The book resonated because mothers read it, cried and smiled, and discovered a way to look at their children as independent people, not solely as an extension of who they are or as a calling card. Einat helps parents with a fresh approach to parenting and is the parent to 5 teenagers. Her book My Everything, was recently translated into English.

We discuss the difference in parenting expectations in the US versus Israel, how the way our parents raised us affected our thoughts on parenting and what pressures we face as parents in this digital age.

When we over-parent and rescue all the time, we're depriving our kids from living. Life is truly an active verb. And when we focus on making things easier in the short term, we deprive our kids of the skills they need for the long haul.

In this episode we speak with Julie Lythcott-Haims who is the New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult, Real American, and her newest book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult. Julie believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way.

She shares with us how parents can sometimes get focused on the short term gains and lose sight of those long haul parenting goals. And in the end, it’s our kids who pay the price. We some of our best “Oh crap! I’m an adult now” moments and how we found strength in them, just as our kids will!

Why do so many of us moms feel guilty asking for help? You know, like it’s a burden to ask someone for help or something that we need (love, support, so on)?

Defining yourself as someone who can “do-it-all” only sets you up for failure and guilt. Why? Because if you can’t “do-it-all-by-yourself” then somehow you are “less than”. And we’re here to tell you that is so not true!

In this episode, we share 4 ways to work past that guilt and learn to ask for what you actually want- guilt free! Because like we always say- the best mom is a happy mom!

What if we told you that we can live better, happier, and simpler lives by making a few adjustments to how we think about self-care? Would you try it?

In this episode, we are talking with Dr.Christine Koh. She’s a music and brain scientist turned multimedia creative! She spent a decade in academia, during which time she was awarded prestigious fellowships from the National Institutes of Health to fund her Ph.D. research at Queen’s University and joint-appointment postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. Christine was about to become a professor when she decided to hang up her academic spurs in favor of more flexible and independent ventures.

We discuss what so many of us view “protective self-care” as and what it really needs to be to actually benefit us in the long run. Christine also shares with us her breakdown of Self-Care into two distinct parts: Protective Care and Restorative Care. And how they relate to boundaries, toxic relationships, taking a “pause”, and really overall -how we care for ourselves.

So many moms worry about whether or not we are giving enough attention to our kids, especially when they outnumber you! We feel guilty for spending what may seem like a lot of time with one child and not enough with the other.

But is that really happening?

Are we really giving some of our kids (often the younger ones) the raw end of the deal?

In this episode we talk with Lynn Berger, a writer and journalist in the Netherlands, covering care, and author. As the care correspondent for online journalism platform De Correspondent, she writes about the various forms care can take, what it does for us, and what we need in order to take good care. Lynn took her thoughts and experiences of being a second child, combined them with her own thoughts as she prepared to, and had her second child, and rounded it all out with what the research says on the subject and put it together in her book, Second Thoughts: On Having and Being a Second Child.

JoAnn, Brie, and Lynn talk about their own experiences both as children with siblings and with their own children and the guilt that we face trying to give each child what feels like is never enough time.

In this unique episode, Brie takes on the role of host and interviews JoAnn Crohn, author of the upcoming book Me & My Friendships. This is JoAnn’s second book and it was a very special one to her. The book Me & My Friendships was written specifically for kids ages 6-10 years old and is as easy and fun read! As parents, we can get so caught up in school/grades, sports, and so on, that we forget to teach our kids the basics. The life skills they need before launching into the world!

In this episode, we talk with Amy Carney, author of Parent on Purpose and 100 Questions for Mom Journal. She creates content and products to help parents raise their children with more joy and purpose. She has 19-year-old triplet sons (launched to 3 different colleges/states), an 18-year-old daughter is a senior (Yep- had 4 kids in 18 months), and adopted their youngest out of the foster care system in 2016. In addition to that, she’s fostering another 9-year-old son now to adopt this summer!

Amy tells us all about her "A-ha" moment when it became very apparent that their family needed to stop, rewind, and focus on life skills more with their kids and how that involved a cross-country trek in an RV! We discuss what life skills are the most important for kids to learn before they leave the house (and cursive is not on that list), as well as what are some tips on how parents can be more intentional every day in their parenting.

Why in the world do we have such low standards sometimes? Many of us wouldn’t give someone the time of day if they were to say to us “I like to keep the bar low, so that way when I do anything- you get impressed”. Um- no thank you! Next, please!

And yet, we hear moms say that they feel spoiled when their partner gives their kids a bath (for the first time ever...and their youngest is 3!), or they were able to sleep in one day out of the year. Seriously? When did that count as being “spoiled”?

In this episode, we push against that thought process that as moms, we should be happy settling for cold chicken nuggets as a meal and someone offering (but not actually doing) the dishes one day a year.  We dig deep into expectations, why we sometimes settle for less than we know we deserve, and 4 things we can do about that today!

Not only will it bring you happiness, but it will also bring you fulfillment. And we have 3 easy tips on how to start that journey back to finding your identity outside of being “mom”!

Ever wondered what sensory processing is and how it might be affecting your kid?

If your kid has ever complained about itchy tags, had a meltdown when in a loud environment, or gagged over certain foods or smells, they may have Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) — a condition that disrupts the way the brain takes in, organizes, and uses the messages received through the 5 senses.

In this episode we talk with Dayna Abraham, the founder of the Calm the Chaos® Framework, best-selling author of The Superkids Activity Guide to Conquering Every Day and founder of the popular blog, Lemon Lime Adventures. She helps parents and education professionals unlock the unique superpowers in children so they can live a more peaceful life filled with clarity, connection, and empowerment by providing them with a proven plan designed to Calm the Chaos® of everyday life.

Dayna talks with us about what sensory processing really is, how it works, and what we can do if we have a concern that our kid may be dealing with SPD.

Why do we have this overwhelming GUILT when things are going well for us as moms?

I mean seriously? Have you ever found yourself relaxing on the couch for 5 minutes and then wonder what you must have forgotten to do? Being a mom is not an easy job. We all can agree on that most days.

I’m not saying that it isn’t a great job, but when you are knee-deep in a tantruming kid, a broken faucet in the kitchen spewing water all over you, all while your oldest is yelling that if you don’t leave right now she will be late to volleyball practice-

Let’s just say it’s hard to focus on the good times.

In this episode, we are chatting with Rachel Nielson, host of the “3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms” Podcast and creator of the Flecks of Gold Journal. She helps moms love motherhood as much as they love their children. As moms, we often prioritize everything before ourselves. It’s just what we do. We are givers. But we also know about the importance of taking some “me time”. And how do many of us do it? By waking up earlier or going to bed later, and thus- sacrificing our sleep. What if there was a better way?

Enjoy our re-broadcast of our second highest downloaded episode!

Our mom guilt and parenting overwhelm doesn’t come strictly from how much we have to do.

Rather, it comes from what we think we should do.  We “should” on ourselves.

We can lessen the guilt by changing our mindset.  So, let’s lay it all out on the table for our first episode with SIX mindset changes to make for a happier mom life.

I want you to tell yourself these things EVERY day.

Let’s be honest. We all need friends in life. And not just friends, but good, solid, healthy friendships. But do our kids really know how to do that? Do they really understand how to build a better friendship?

We do our best to teach our kids everything they need to succeed in life. But many of us just kind of gloss over the skills of making and cultivating friendships. We may nudge our kids to go talk to other kids on the playground or ask more questions about that one classmate who when our kid talks about them, they seem to light up. But honestly, how many of us taught our kids at a basic level how to introduce themselves to others, how to find a common interest with others, and how to keep that connection going?

Today we speak with Audrey Monke, a Camp Owner/Director at Gold Arrow Camp, host of Sunshine Parenting podcast/website - Author of Happy Campers: 9 Summer Camp Secrets for Raising Kids Who Become Thriving Adults. She specializes in raising happy, self-reliant, kind, responsible kids using secrets from summer camp! And Audrey shares with us the secrets of coaching our kids to build better friendships.

They’re driving you crazy. The yelling. The screaming. And you are thinking to yourself- this can’t be normal. This can’t be okay. How am I supposed to deal with the fighting?

Before you grab that glass of wine or hide in the closet to stress eat, we have something to share with you. In many cases, it’s okay to let not only let them argue, but conflict can be healthy.

Today we speak with KJ Dell’Antonia. She’s the author of the books “How to Be a Happier Parent: Raising a Family, Having a Life, and Loving (Almost) Every Minute” and the novel “The Chicken Sisters”, as well as the former editor and lead writer of the Motherlode blog at the NYT and the co-host of the #AmWriting Podcast. KJ helps people recognize that our happiness is more about how we ourselves behave and react, not about our circumstances.

We've all done it. It's been a long day.  And you LOSE it and yell at your kids with such fury that your voice cracks. What is there to do now? We’re here to tell you it’s okay. We all yell sometimes. But it’s what we do after yelling at your kids that makes the difference.

In today’s podcast, we discuss what can make us lose our cool and what we can do to repair things once we’ve yelled and immediately regretted it.
